00:00Kira, you and I will be working much more closely from now on.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most iconic and memorable moments from the Star
00:12Wars media franchise that included Darth Maul.
00:15And what do you seek now, Sith?
00:19Fortune and power.
00:23Number 10. Resurrection. Star Wars The Clone Wars.
00:26The character of Darth Maul proved too popular with Star Wars fans for his story to end on Naboo.
00:30This Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious may have been bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi during their duel,
00:35but it wouldn't be long before Maul's evil would live again under mysterious and occult circumstances.
00:39It's Maul's brother, Savage Opress, who first discovers his mentally shattered sibling on Lotho Minor.
00:50Maul has fashioned spider legs for himself, but he's tormented by fear and madness.
00:54The chains, the chains are the easy part. It's what goes on here.
01:00The Nightsister, Mother Talzin, resurrects Maul and outfits him with new, cybernetic droid legs.
01:06And it's here where the old Maul's thirst for revenge begins anew.
01:09Number 9. Palpatine's Plan. Star Wars The Clone Wars.
01:11It's fascinating to bear witness to Darth Maul's insight into the grand scheme of things,
01:15even as the Jedi are caught unaware by events such as Order 66.
01:19We were both tools for greater powers.
01:22His debut in The Phantom Menace may not have done much with regard to his character motivations,
01:27but Maul was given much more detail during the Clone Wars animated series.
01:30An example of this occurs in the seventh season episode titled The Phantom Apprentice,
01:34where Maul reveals to Ahsoka the scope of Chancellor Palpatine's plan.
01:38And Darth Sidious is behind it?
01:40He is behind everything.
01:43In the shadows.
01:44Always, but soon.
01:46Very soon.
01:48He will reveal himself.
01:51This scene outlines how Maul is in tune with both the future and the past.
01:54He knows that the Jedi's time is over,
01:56and that Palpatine's grand scheme is about to change the galaxy for good.
01:59There is no justice, no law, no order,
02:02except for the one that will replace it.
02:06Number 8. The Duel at Sundari. Star Wars The Clone Wars.
02:08Darth Maul has been involved with a number of outstanding lightsaber duels
02:11over the course of his Star Wars legacy,
02:13but perhaps one of his most underrated occurs during this episode of The Clone Wars,
02:17titled Shades of Reason.
02:18For Mandalore!
02:23Maul duels the leader of the Death Watch, pre-Vizsla, during the Siege of Mandalore,
02:27and it's an intense struggle to be sure.
02:29Maul proving once again how he sees the bigger picture intentionally appeals to Vizsla's sense of honor and combat.
02:34Maul does this knowing that when he succeeds,
02:36he'll be able to take control as Death Watch leader.
02:44The resulting schism not only works in Maul's favor,
02:47but it also pushes the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kreeze into assisting the Republic against Maul.
02:52Only the strongest shall rule on.
03:00Number 7. Establishing the Shadow Collective. Star Wars The Clone Wars.
03:04Darth Maul is spiritually adrift after his Nightsister resurrection.
03:07Now motivated solely by revenge, the Sith needs to establish himself as a threat,
03:11not only to his former master Sidious, but also Obi-Wan, the Jedi, and the Republic.
03:15Our brothers are in favor of an alliance to liberate Mandalore.
03:19This duchess of yours will soon discover the true burden of peace.
03:25Maul and his brothers, savage oppressed, decide to build a criminal empire,
03:28the Shadow Collective, via intimidation and murder.
03:30It would seem the decision to join us is now yours.
03:35After careful consideration, we will join you.
03:39This collective eventually folds in such powerful groups as the Hutts and the Pyke Syndicate into their ranks,
03:44a move that eventually sets the stage for Maul's Siege of Mandalore.
03:47Maul may no longer have a master,
03:48but this determination definitely proves that this son of Dathomir is in charge of his own destiny.
03:54Submit or suffer.
03:56Number 6. Maul and Savage Opress vs. Darth Sidious. Star Wars The Clone Wars.
04:00The writing seemed to be on the wall during this fifth season duel between Darth Maul,
04:03his brother, Savage Opress, and Maul's former master, Darth Sidious.
04:06This latter Sith Lord is just too powerful, even against two formidable opponents,
04:10with Palpatine basically laughing off the attacks by both Maul and Opress.
04:19The siblings do their best against Sidious' lightsaber skills,
04:23force lightning, and unlimited power, but the outcome seems to be inevitable.
04:30Sidious' kills Opress believes Maul alive,
04:33alone with the knowledge that he's failed once again,
04:35and that he will never return to the side of his master.
04:37Have mercy.
04:40Please.
04:41Please.
04:42There is no mercy.
04:46Number 5. The Hallway Scene.
04:48Star Wars The Clone Wars.
04:49I'm not here to team up with you.
04:51I need a diversion,
04:52and you're it.
04:54Star Wars fans can be really hard to please at times,
04:57but if there's one scene that everyone can agree was awesome,
04:59it's the hallway scene from 2016's Rogue One.
05:01Darth Vader came across like a killing machine during this sequence,
05:04demonstrating his skill and power in much the same fashion as Darth Maul
05:07during his own hallway scene from The Clone Wars.
05:14This sequence from the episode titled Shattered
05:16proved that Maul could handle himself without any weapons at all,
05:19as he utilizes the force and his environment
05:21to tear through troops like a hot knife through butter.
05:28Number 4. A New Lightsaber.
05:30Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace.
05:33It's impossible to describe, if you weren't there,
05:35the thrill that many Star Wars fans received
05:37back when Darth Maul debuted his double-sided lightsaber
05:39in The Phantom Menace.
05:40We'll handle this.
05:41Today's fandom receives an embarrassment of riches
05:44when it comes to varied lightsaber technology,
05:46but this was 1999.
05:47Lightsabers were still on a very basic level
05:49when it came to their appearances on screen,
05:51so this ignition from Maul was revelatory for moviegoers
05:54checking out Maul's arrival on Naboo.
06:01We just wish they hadn't spoiled this reveal
06:03in the promotional trailers that led up to the film's initial release.
06:11Number 3. Final Duel with Obi-Wan.
06:13Star Wars Rebels.
06:14Whoever said that all lightsaber duels needed to be lengthy,
06:16drawn-out affairs has apparently never witnessed
06:18this amazing scene from Star Wars Rebels.
06:20You have nothing.
06:25And what do you have?
06:28This definitive death of Darth Maul serves as a nice companion piece
06:31to the Sith's initial rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi
06:34that took place on The Clone Wars, episode titled Revenge.
06:36That duel may have ended up as a stalemate,
06:38but this final conflict on Tatooine
06:40finds Maul being cut down once again
06:42at the end of Kenobi's lightsaber.
06:49That brief, final communication between the pair
06:51also showcases yet again Maul's vision of the future.
06:54He feels Anakin Skywalker's presence in the Force
06:57as the Chosen One
06:57and dies secure in the knowledge
06:59that these feelings are correct.
07:00He will avenge us.
07:08Number 2. The Siege of Mandalore.
07:10Star Wars The Clone Wars.
07:12It's proven to be a consistently difficult task
07:14for Star Wars creators to develop new content
07:16where the story runs parallel to established canonical lore.
07:18That said, the Siege of Mandalore arc from The Clone Wars
07:20probably did the best job at pleasing all fans
07:23who wanted to see exactly what else was going on
07:25before and after Order 66.
07:27Kenobi's arrogance.
07:30You'll find I have many qualities for you to dislike.
07:33The arc deals with many of the events
07:35already covered here on this list,
07:36but the battle between Ahsoka and Darth Maul
07:38was a huge highlight.
07:39We could have destroyed Asidius.
07:42We could have destroyed Asidius.
07:42Only for you to take his place.
07:45Not only was this fight well animated,
07:47but they actually got the original physical Darth Maul actor,
07:49Ray Park, to motion capture his movements.
07:51While things don't end well for Maul,
07:53his aggressive combat style proved that he was not
07:55to be underestimated.
07:56I'll give you one last chance.
07:58Join me.
08:00Or die.
08:09Before we continue,
08:10check out this single from Sound Mojo's Aria,
08:13Songs from Iran,
08:14reimagining Persian melodies as modern rock,
08:17metal, and pop songs.
08:18Check out the full track and album below.
08:38It speaks volumes that a selection
08:40from John Williams' score
08:42to The Phantom Menace
08:43was released as a CD single back in 1999.
08:53Star Wars was officially back,
08:55and the music to this epic duel
08:56between Qui-Gon Jinn,
08:58Obi-Wan Kenobi,
08:59and Darth Maul suitably underscored
09:00the scene's importance.
09:08The scene where Maul and Jinn
09:10are briefly separated
09:11by elevator force fields
09:12speaks largely to their character,
09:14juxtaposing Maul's anxious
09:15and aggressive pacing
09:16against Jinn's still meditation.
09:18Sadly, it's Kenobi
09:19who bears witness
09:19to the death of his master
09:20at the end of Maul's lightsaber,
09:22although the young Padawan
09:23eventually comes out
09:23on the other side
09:24as the victor of this duel.
