00:01This week on The Fish Guys.
00:04It's on!
00:05We're not doing this again, Chris.
00:07Did you catch him or did I catch him?
00:08It's my fish.
00:09We know the answer to that.
00:11Oh!
00:12Got him!
00:13Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:14Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:15You think you're the only one that can fish up here?
00:17This is getting out of control.
00:18I'm sorry.
00:19Couldn't hear you over the sound of Chris catching another fish.
00:22Uh-oh!
00:22Let's go!
00:23There you go.
00:24Oh, mangrove snapper, baby.
00:26All right.
00:27Fish on!
00:27One of my favorite eating fish.
00:29That is a delicious fish.
00:30Woo!
00:45Right here, right here, right here.
00:46Off the bow, off the bow.
00:47Oh, fish on.
00:49Oh, Chris is on.
00:50Imagine that.
00:51Let's go.
00:51Double up.
00:52Double up.
00:53Oh, look at him.
00:53Look, look, look, look.
00:54That's him.
00:54Oh, he's eating right now.
00:57I love it when a plan comes together.
01:02For Captains Lane and Chris, fishing isn't just a job, it's their passion.
01:08And there's no better place to live out that passion than right here in the Florida Keys.
01:13So with a day off and no family obligations, the guys trailer the Contender 26 Bay down to Marathon for
01:22a laid back day on the water.
01:25Let's do something different.
01:26Let's do something different, we said.
01:27We're going to do some snapper fishing, some creek fishing.
01:29It's a windy day, you know.
01:30It's a Bussman's holiday today.
01:31Did I say snappers?
01:32What?
01:32Whoa!
01:33What's up?
01:34Cousin Earl!
01:35What's going on, man?
01:36Cousin Earl!
01:36What are we doing?
01:37We just didn't even come to catch some snappers today.
01:40Heck yeah!
01:41All right.
01:41Where have you been?
01:43I've been around.
01:44There's a lot of room on a Contender Bay boat, buddy.
01:47I thought I heard some chup chup earlier.
01:48Check your belges!
01:49I thought that was just a yellow beak, you know.
01:51I didn't know what that noise was.
01:53It was a bird.
01:54Well, we got a bird on the boat now, Chris.
01:57That's right.
01:57Let's see if we can catch this man some snapper.
01:59You got the whole bird family coming in?
02:01Heck yeah!
02:01Quattro, Deuce, all of them.
02:03All of them?
02:03Whole squad.
02:04Well, let's see if we can't feed that whole bird family of yours.
02:07Let's do it.
02:07Let's get it done.
02:08Choo choo!
02:11So what we're doing in here today is we're going to be fishing really light leader,
02:15because these fish are leader shy.
02:18The water's a little smoky, which is good.
02:21Fishing a sixteenth of an ounce jig head.
02:23Lane says, ain't no use if it ain't chartreuse, I guess.
02:26That's it.
02:27Me, personally, I like the pink ones.
02:28How many knots do you think you tie on any given charter, Chris?
02:32Eh, six of them.
02:34He just couldn't help himself, bro.
02:36Just couldn't help himself.
02:40At least, at least that man.
02:44Sorry to ask.
02:45You gotta do the hands, man.
02:47Six, seven.
02:49That's in the middle of a tiny knot.
02:51So Earl, where are you originally from?
02:54Were you born?
02:55You were born or hatched?
02:56I was born.
02:57Yeah, I was born.
02:58Yep, yep.
02:59My family's in Virginia, man.
03:00How long you been down here in the Keys?
03:02What's your deal?
03:03I've been down in the Keys for, man, probably 15-ish years.
03:08I'm not good with the math, to be honest.
03:10But I grew up in Gloucester, Virginia.
03:12Small town on the water.
03:13Three-year varsity starter for the Gloucester High Dukes.
03:16We were two and 28.
03:19Not real good at football, so I had to learn how to fish.
03:21Okay.
03:22And I got a biology degree.
03:25You got a degree in biology?
03:26Pigeon!
03:27Pigeon!
03:28Hey!
03:29Enough about you.
03:30I haven't even tied my knot.
03:35Look at that, Chris.
03:37Dinner for one.
03:41Nice mangrove snapper.
03:42Now, as a marine biologist, what's the technical name for that snapper, Earl?
03:46That's a gray snapper.
03:47Gray snapper.
03:48We call them mangrove snappers, though, right?
03:50Yeah.
03:51That's a sandwich, man.
03:52That's a nice sandwich.
03:53That's a sandwich.
03:54All right.
03:54I'm going to get in the game, I think.
03:56Well, let me see if I can catch another one.
03:59The boys are slacking on me today.
04:02So we're nose hooking them here so they don't spin in the current.
04:06Oh, there's a bite.
04:06Got a lot of current running through this channel down here.
04:10Hey, Lane.
04:10So you hook it like that and he looks natural in the current.
04:12Got another fish, Lane.
04:13You hear anything, Earl?
04:14Look at that.
04:15There's another sandwich.
04:17Might be going home early today, boys.
04:19I'm standing behind Chris just so I can be in the shot, you know what I mean?
04:22Just so we're included in the episode.
04:25Just so I can get on TV, too.
04:26Like, hey, Mom.
04:27I was there.
04:28I swear I was there.
04:30I think Chris spits on his bait, just so you know.
04:32I talked to him, Lane.
04:34You got a whisper in their ear.
04:37You got to go out there and catch a big one.
04:40Do you say nice things to your bait or do you say mean things to your bait?
04:44Sweet little things to the bait.
04:46Okay.
04:46Because I'll be talking trash to my bait.
04:49Well, you got to talk nice to it.
04:50Ready to bite?
04:52This is getting out of control.
04:54It's on.
04:56We're not doing this again, Chris.
04:58Well, I can't help myself sometimes again.
05:00I'm putting a new bait on.
05:02A little mutton?
05:03A little mutton.
05:05A little mutton.
05:07Woo-wee.
05:10Man, I like this busman's holiday.
05:12I'd like to just catch a fish.
05:15This is getting old, Chris.
05:17Pretty, pretty.
05:20Here we go.
05:21Release.
05:22All right.
05:23Fish on.
05:26Ooh.
05:28About as much fun as it gets.
05:3010-pound tackle.
05:31Some little light gear.
05:33Catching beautiful mangroves in the channels.
05:37On a windy day in the Florida Keys.
05:39Doesn't get any better than this.
05:41God.
05:42A little gray snapper, also known as a mangrove.
05:45Hey, I got a fish for Mama Earl.
05:48Let's go.
05:51The Fish Guys is brought to you by
05:54Marathon in the Florida Keys.
05:57The Nature Conservancy.
05:59Partnering with anglers to keep fisheries abundant
06:02for generations to come.
06:05Jefferson's Bourbon.
06:06Crafted with precision and aged with innovation.
06:09Contender.
06:11Legendary sport fishing boats.
06:14Power pole shallow water anchor.
06:17Swift.
06:17Silent.
06:18Secure.
06:29Go up current of you here, Bubba.
06:31Oh, there's a bite right there.
06:35It's home.
06:38Is that you Earl?
06:39You got a fish?
06:40Oh wait, never mind.
06:41Chris got a fish.
06:41No, that's me again.
06:42I got another sandwich.
06:44Hey Earl, that's why we bring Chris with us.
06:46Guaranteed a fish.
06:48Chris seems to be catching them every time his bait
06:50drifts across the channel and gets right about even
06:53with the edge of the channel.
06:54So, without letting Chris know this,
06:56I'm going to copy what he's doing.
06:57Uh-oh.
06:58Let's go.
06:59There you go.
07:00We're so back.
07:01Nice work.
07:03Got right into Chris's honey hole.
07:05Yeah, you did.
07:05That's a nice one too.
07:06Oh, mangrove snapper, baby.
07:08Hey Earl, what's your favorite snapper recipe?
07:10Honestly?
07:11Yeah.
07:12Honesty's good.
07:12My favorite snapper recipe is filet them real nice
07:16and then we take them to Alfredo's in Key Largo
07:19and they make the best fish tacos with them.
07:22That's my favorite recipe.
07:23All right then.
07:24That works.
07:25I agree with you on that.
07:26They're so good, man.
07:27They are good there.
07:29Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
07:31Come on.
07:33Oh, hammered that one.
07:36Lane, I like these reels you got.
07:38These pins.
07:39I'm glad you're happy, Chris.
07:41Anything to catch fish for you.
07:43Oh, look at that one.
07:43You got me.
07:44Did you catch him or did I catch him?
07:46Me.
07:46It's my fish.
07:47We know the answer to that.
07:48Need help?
07:49I'm just trying to figure out if you caught him or I caught him.
07:52I'm going to go ahead and say I caught him, Chris.
07:54That was definitely mine.
07:55He can't even let me enjoy anything, Earl.
07:57This is why we don't have nice things.
07:59Brings me back to like when I was a kid.
08:01I love catching snappers.
08:02It doesn't matter if you're by docks or on the reef or in a creek.
08:06These things are just, they're always there.
08:08They're fun to catch.
08:08And they're really good eating.
08:10You want that one, Lane?
08:11Or Earl?
08:12Uh, you know, man.
08:14We'll let him live.
08:15Yeah.
08:16I was definitely going to say keep him.
08:21Fish on.
08:21I think I got a little yellowjack would be my guess here.
08:25Oh!
08:27Oh!
08:28Oh, my goodness.
08:29That's a big shark.
08:29Woo!
08:30That is a nice mangro snapper, though.
08:32I just saved your life, buddy.
08:33I would say you prolonged his life, maybe.
08:37That's a good point.
08:37I'd rather feed him to Quattro than to the bull sharks.
08:40So you're the third.
08:43Right.
08:43Who's the first?
08:45Well, my dad is Deuce.
08:46Deuce, okay.
08:47Yeah, Earl Bird, Deuce.
08:49And then Mama Bird is Quattro.
08:51Quattro.
08:52Yeah, she's Earl Bird the fourth.
08:53Does she have a beard, too?
08:55No.
08:56No?
08:56And I don't recommend you saying that around her.
08:58Mama Bird, tighten you up, Lane.
09:00I don't feel like getting tuned up by Mama Bird.
09:03She's going to give you the business, Bubba.
09:07Oh, nice mangrove.
09:08Woo-hoo!
09:09Mama Bird eating good in the hood.
09:11That's right.
09:12Does Deuce like to eat fish, too?
09:13Oh, Deuce loves to eat fish.
09:16Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
09:19Got him!
09:21Whoa, whoa, whoa.
09:22Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
09:24You think you're the only one that can fish up here?
09:27Uh-oh.
09:27Look at that one.
09:29Woo!
09:30Yeah, how many of you caught over there, man?
09:31That's at least six or seven.
09:34You know, give or take.
09:35Six, seven.
09:36Six, seven.
09:37Something like that.
09:42The Florida Keys are known for exceptional fishing and diving.
09:46But above the water's surface, over 285 species of birds call these shores home.
09:53When one of these birds becomes sick or injured, the Marathon Wild Bird Center steps in to rescue, rehabilitate, and
10:01release them back into the wild.
10:03To learn more about this non-profit organization, the guys meet up with founder and director, Kelly Grinter.
10:11So how many birds do we have in the Marathon Wild Bird Center?
10:13We have 35 non-releasable birds plus Rita the bald eagle.
10:17And now you've got an earl bird.
10:18So you've got 37 today.
10:20We've got an earl bird the third.
10:21You think we could see some more of my long-lost relatives?
10:24Let's go take a leg.
10:25My cousins around here?
10:26Yeah.
10:28Quinn's up for a walk.
10:30Unfortunately, not all patients can be released to the skies.
10:34A variety of birds, from plovers to pelicans, continue to be cared for.
10:40Including Quinn, who is completely blind after being hit by a car.
10:45And Rita the bald eagle, who had part of a wing amputated due to infection.
10:51So Ms. Kelly, if we were to find a bird that was in danger, what's the protocol?
10:55Who do we call?
10:56That's a great question.
10:57First of all, there are three wild bird centers in the Florida Keys.
11:00We have Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West.
11:02So depending on where you are, you would call one of those.
11:04Okay.
11:04We want you to give us as much information as possible about where you are.
11:07And if you can't stay with the bird, find a piece of trash or anything and tie it somewhere
11:12where you can tell the rescuer what to look for.
11:15With the help of her feathered friends, Kelly goes beyond rescue efforts, leading educational
11:21programs and supporting research focused on human-wildlife conflict and reducing the hazards that put these birds at risk.
11:30All of this is made possible through the support of independent donors.
11:34Thank you so much for having us.
11:36You're welcome.
11:36I had a phenomenal time.
11:37Yes.
11:38Thank you for everything you're doing for the birds, for the community, everything.
11:41This is incredible.
11:42And thanks for having us.
11:43Thank you for visiting.
11:43Yeah.
11:44That was fun.
11:44All right, let's go put Quinn away.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Put the birds away, huh?
11:47Put the birds away.
11:48Thank you so much, Kelly.
11:49This is where the birds go?
11:50This is where the birds go.
11:52Nice.
11:52See ya.
11:52Nice.
11:52Nice.
11:53Thank you so much, Kelly.
11:54It's been a pleasure.
11:55Hey, sometimes lunch around here.
11:56Oh, I'm sorry.
11:58Perfect.
11:59Have a great afternoon.
12:00Thank you so much, Kelly.
12:01See you, Lane.
12:01Later.
12:02Bye, Quinn.
12:13The guys are inshore of Marathon, Florida, where Captain Chris has put them on a fire snapper bite for an
12:20enjoyable busman's holiday.
12:23There he is.
12:24You guys ever feel like everybody else is fishing on the better part of the boat?
12:26Coming right at the boat.
12:27No.
12:28Me neither.
12:29I'm sorry.
12:30Couldn't hear you over the sound of Chris catching another fish.
12:32It's getting ridiculous, isn't it?
12:34It's a yellowjack, Chris.
12:36All right, I'm gonna come up front.
12:39Hey, Earl, I'll go ahead and get the net.
12:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:42You do that, man.
12:43About time you contributed.
12:45That's a nice yellowjack right there, Lane.
12:51Oh, that's a beauty, Chris.
12:53That's a dandy.
12:54Woo, woo.
12:55I feel like this bite switched to the other side of the boat and y'all didn't want to tell
12:58me.
12:58One of my favorite eating fish, Chris.
13:00That is a delicious fish.
13:01Look at them colors on that fish, Lane.
13:03Beautiful.
13:04Oh, yeah, it's on the other side of the boat.
13:05That's a problem.
13:06Boy, I was catching fish on that side first.
13:09The way he's fighting.
13:10He's not happy.
13:11Oh, you got a yellowjack.
13:13These things fight, man.
13:15They're so much fun to catch.
13:17You got to dress like the fish you want to catch.
13:19You know what I mean?
13:20Yes, correct.
13:20We're here.
13:22Little yellow shirt, little yellowjack.
13:27Oh, that's a nice one.
13:28Chris.
13:29Oh.
13:30Should I get a net?
13:33See, that's why I can't catch fish, because I'm always netting Chris' fish.
13:36Oh, it's gonna get short.
13:37Is it?
13:38Uh, yeah.
13:42Never mind, I got him.
13:44Right in the net.
13:45How about the net shot, Bubba?
13:47You didn't even have to get it wetten, eh?
13:49There's a hole in one, Chris.
13:50Hey, did you see that shark?
13:52No, I was too busy getting in the net.
13:53He might have got his tail.
13:55Oh, he did.
13:56He got a little scrape right there.
13:57Look at that.
13:58Pulled him away just in time.
13:59Let's go in the coolant.
14:02Oh, fish out.
14:05Oh, woo!
14:07What you got there, Lane?
14:09Earl, I got a saltwater fish.
14:10I think I got one of them nice yellow jacks.
14:12Got a whole bunch of buddies with him.
14:13Feel like I'm cheating off your homework, Lane.
14:16Ooh, nobody's cheating.
14:18Woo!
14:18I got one.
14:19You got one?
14:20Yes, sir.
14:22Good work.
14:23If you could chum them up, I think I could catch them, you know?
14:25That's good teamwork, Earl.
14:27That's what makes the dream work, baby.
14:30No giants today, just steady fun.
14:35Light tackle laughing in the midday sun.
14:41Pen reel singing cooler nearly packed.
14:45Yeah, the Florida Keys always action packed.
14:50It's a snapper day down in the Florida Keys.
14:55Come as you are, drift along with the breeze.
15:00Three man limited memories made.
15:03Crew locked in, what a great day.
15:07Mangroves dancing in that contender way.
15:09Fish guy's back tomorrow.
15:11You're getting close.
15:12You're the limit, ain't you, Bubba?
15:13I think so.
15:14Speaking of limits, what's the limit on the grays, Chris?
15:16It's five per person, ten inches long in state waters.
15:19Let's see if I can work on my limit while we're at it.
15:22We're really not keeping anything below 11 or even 12 today
15:25because we're catching nicer fish.
15:26Just because it's a minimum of ten inches
15:27doesn't mean you got to keep them, you know?
15:29I got one, too, mate.
15:30Oh, there you go.
15:31Add to my five.
15:32Add to your five.
15:33All right, Earl.
15:35So, Chris, I can keep five mangrove snappers.
15:38Yes.
15:39But I can keep ten snappers total.
15:41Yes, there's an aggregate limit.
15:43It depends on what type of snappers you have.
15:45Like, we have lane snappers down here.
15:47We got yellowtails, mutton snappers.
15:50You're allowed a ten snapper aggregate limit,
15:53but certain species are only allowed five per person.
15:57Okay, so...
15:57So if you catch five mangroves, you can have five yellowtails.
16:00If I only catch yellowtails, I can keep ten of those.
16:03You can keep ten of those because they are ten.
16:05So it's important to know your bag limit.
16:06One hundred percent.
16:08So five of these guys.
16:10That's a lot of sandwiches.
16:13The Fish Guys is brought to you by...
16:17Marathon in the Florida Keys.

16:40Nick Mayer Art, committed to conservation.
16:49Hold on.
16:51Oh.
16:52There's a bit.
16:53Uh-oh.
16:54Chris got a fish on.
16:56I do.
16:57That feels different.
17:01That one's real heavy, Lane.
17:04You better.
17:04He's getting eaten.
17:05I can't tell.
17:06Do we need a net?
17:07I think he just got eaten.
17:08I think there's one more down.
17:10Yeah, I think.
17:14Gone.
17:15The tax man.
17:16You know what that means, right?
17:18Time to go.
17:18You get a tax man like that.
17:20I think it's time to go.
17:21Oh, fish on.
17:23Y'all can go home.
17:24Leave me here.
17:25Leave me here.
17:25Hopefully the tax man don't get that one like he got mine.
17:28It's a snapper.
17:28Oh, there's a good one.
17:29Hey, lucky number 15, baby.
17:31That is it.
17:31Yeah.
17:32The limit.
17:32That's the one.
17:33Now we can go home.
17:34You know what they call that, right?
17:36They call that a ringer fish.
17:37A ringer fish?
17:38Yeah.
17:38Ding, ding, ding.
17:39It's time to roll home.
17:41Well, we got our limit of 15 snappers and got some nice yellow jacks in there, too.
17:46We got plenty of fish for the bird fish fry.
17:49Yeah.
17:49Well, let's go.
17:50Let's go put this boat on the trailer.
17:51Yeah, let's roll.
17:52Get back up the Key Largo and call it a successful day, my brother.
17:59A great day fishing ends in the kitchen, and that's where professional chef Kat Pfeiffer
18:05joins the guys to share some of her favorite seafood creations.
18:10Today's recipe is a twist on tradition with blackened fish sliders.
18:15I've got a few pieces of fish here.
18:17What am I going to be doing with this?
18:18So you're going to take a little of your olive oil, drizzle, and then you're going to season
18:22with your blackened seasoning there.
18:23Okay.
18:24So that blackened seasoning is going to taste real nice with that sweet Hawaiian roll.
18:28A little drizzle, drizzle.
18:29Doing a good job, Earl.
18:30Hey, thank you.
18:31What we're going to do next is you're going to put your fish onto the skillet here.
18:36I mean, would you normally add a little oil first, or no?
18:39You don't need to?
18:39With this, he oiled them really well, and then we have a nice non-stick pan.
18:44If you don't have a non-stick pan, definitely add the oil.
18:47Okay.
18:48I got a good angle here where I can see the side, so I can kind of see that about
18:52a third
18:52of it is starting to turn white.
18:53I'm going to give it a little bit more before I give it a flip.
18:56I like it.
18:57I like it.
18:58You like it about a little more than a third white before you flip it?
19:01I do.
19:02Yeah.
19:02I do.
19:03I don't want to go half because I, you know.
19:04Overcook it.
19:05We're getting there.
19:06Lane, you're going to go ahead and toast your buns there, please, sir.
19:10Did you pre-butter those things, man?
19:12I did.
19:13I did.
19:13Because it's kind of a quick turnaround.
19:15Okay.
19:15I like it.
19:16Sometimes you want to prepare ahead of time.
19:18Awesome.
19:18Now we're going to go half and half.
19:19There we go.
19:20The color that adds.
19:22A little crispness.
19:24It's not about the flavor profile, Earl.
19:25About the flavor.
19:27Okie dokie, guys.
19:27So now we're going to build our fish sandwiches.
19:29So you'll just put out the spread that you think that you guys would like or your friends
19:33and family would like.
19:34Sure.
19:34And then you kind of build it as is.
19:38I'll tell you what.
19:39This is like an absolute classic.
19:41The lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, that blackening coming through on the fish.
19:46It's almost like a hamburger slider.
19:49Big upgrade to the fish.
19:50Any white fish.
19:51I mean, you could do this with chicken, anything.
19:53It doesn't matter.
19:54Right?
19:55Blackening.
19:56Build it nice and simple.
19:58Tartar sauce makes it, obviously, with the fish, with a little mayonnaise.
20:01Whatever you like.
20:01That's the beauty of this.
20:02Exactly.
20:03Dress it how you like.
20:04Well, if you'd like to get a hold of Chef Kat Pfeiffer down in the Florida Keys, go to
20:09our website, thefishguystv.com.
