02:58Married for four years, the Sumners live in Jacksonville, Florida, where the 61-year-old retirees have recently settled into
03:06a more relaxed lifestyle.
03:08They came looking to enjoy each other's company and certainly had the hopes of having many more years together.
03:16Is it my lead?
03:18Mm-hmm.
03:18All right, here we go.
03:22Something good is going to come out of this hand.
03:23I just know it.
03:48Surprise!
03:51Tiffany, this is a surprise!
03:53Tiffany, this is a surprise!
03:53What are you doing in town?
03:55Uh, my boyfriend Mike and I came down to visit a friend, but plans fell through.
03:59And I remembered y'all lived down this way, so I thought I'd stop by and say hi.
04:02I am so glad you did.
04:04I am so glad you did.
04:04Come on in, dear.
04:05Carol, you'll never guess who it is.
04:08Tiffany Cole was a neighbor of Reggie and Carol's back when they lived in Charleston, South Carolina.
04:15Oh, it's so good to see you!
04:17Oh, it's so good to see you!
04:19The Sumners certainly thought of Tiffany and her family as neighbors and friends, and they told Tiffany, if you're ever
04:25in Jacksonville, come see us.
04:28Back in South Carolina, Tiffany was almost like a daughter to the Sumners.
04:33They share a lot of happy memories.
04:35I've forgotten about a lot of these old pictures.
04:38The things you find when you move.
04:42Is that Dad?
04:43Yep, that's him, all right.
04:45Oh, wow, he looks so young here.
04:48Back when he still had all that hair.
04:50Here we go.
04:56Fancy.
04:57Yes, it was part of our wedding set.
05:00Not many excuses to get it out down here in Florida.
05:03Everything is so casual.
05:05But since we have company...
05:09Hey, so how's the car working out?
05:11Oh, it's great.
05:12Changes everything, really.
05:14I don't know how Mike and I would have been able to make the drive without it.
05:17Reggie and Carol helped out Tiffany's family when her father was dreadfully ill.
05:22They were there for her.
05:24They would have given her money.
05:25They would have gave her a place to stay.
05:27Whatever she wanted, they would be there for.
05:30And I can't believe you gave me such a great deal on it.
05:33And I'm going to pay you the rest of what I owe you as soon as I get back and
05:36start working again.
05:36I promise.
05:37You take your time, sweetheart.
05:39We're in no rush.
05:41The offer on our house back in Charleston just went through.
05:44So we're doing fine.
05:47Yeah.
05:48Ho ho.
05:48If I'd have known we were going to do that well on that old house, I would have retired years
05:53ago.
05:56Tiff.
05:58Give me a drink, will you?
06:01Sure thing, hon.
06:04Be right back.
06:05And hey.
06:07No ice.
06:08I don't know why you can never remember that.
06:14Michael Jackson is definitely an odd character, but when he met the Sumners, they knew Tiffany.
06:19They trusted her and said this is her boyfriend.
06:21And so they welcomed him into their home too.
06:30You know we have an extra room.
06:32We'd be more than happy for you to stay with us.
06:34Are you sure?
06:35We wouldn't want to impose or anything.
06:37We insist.
06:38What good is a guest bedroom if you don't have any guests to fill it?
07:54The Sumners had received $90,000 for the sale of their home in Charleston.
08:02There was all their personal information, bank statements and things sitting in piles
08:07on desks.
08:11The next morning, Carol is looking forward to spending some quality time with Tiffany and
08:17her boyfriend.
08:20But it's clear the young couple has other plans.
08:26You're leaving already?
08:27You haven't even had your coffee yet.
08:30You sure I can't make you breakfast before you go?
08:33No.
08:33We got to hit the road.
08:35We want to beat the traffic.
08:36You know how it is.
08:37Well, let me go get Reggie up because I know he'll want to say goodbye.
08:40No, that's okay.
08:42Let him sleep.
08:43Besides, this isn't goodbye.
08:45See you later.
08:46I hope so.
08:48You have a room here anytime, so come back soon, okay?
08:52I will.
08:54I promise.
08:56Tiffany and Michael were sort of in a rush to get back home.
08:59They wanted to get on the road, so they said goodbye and parted ways quickly.
09:13Over the next few weeks, Reggie and Carol fall back into their familiar routine.
09:19The Sumner's life on a daily basis was just two people enjoying their marriage together.
09:25They were both very close to their families.
09:27They talked to family every day.
09:30Mm-hmm.
09:31Oh, yeah.
09:32You bet.
09:34Hopefully.
09:35Yeah.
09:39Oh, I better get going.
09:40Your mom's trying to burn the house down again.
09:43Love you, too.
09:44Oh, shoot.
09:45Bye.
09:45Bye.
09:48Thanks.
09:49I guess I got a little distracted.
09:51Uh-huh.
09:52Yeah.
09:55Are we out of paper towels?
09:56I could have sworn we just got some at the store.
09:59Uh, let me go check.
10:00Where would they be?
10:01In the garage?
10:02Yes.
10:03Check the shelf on the right.
10:04Good.
10:06Good.
10:22Coming.
10:35Can I help you?
10:36Yes, ma'am.
10:37We seem to be having some car trouble stalled out a few blocks down the road.
10:41I wonder if maybe we could come in and use your phone?
10:49Uh, sure.
10:49Of course.
10:50Come on in.
10:52Phone's over there.
10:53Reggie and Carol, they were just the type of people that if somebody walked up and said
10:57they needed something, they were going to try to help them.
11:02Michael!
11:06What are you doing here?
11:12Where's Tiffany?
11:30Surprise!
11:32When their former neighbor Tiffany Cole and her boyfriend Michael Jackson came to visit
11:36just two weeks ago.
11:38Carol, you'll never guess who it is.
11:41Reggie and Carol Sumner were thrilled.
11:43So good to see you.
11:46But now, suddenly Michael is back.
11:51What are you doing here?
11:52And it doesn't look like he and his friends claiming car trouble have dropped by to exchange pleasantries.
11:59You know these guys?
12:02Where's Tiffany?
12:06Now!
12:09Michael had just met Reggie and Carol Sumner.
12:13Two weeks later, he's recruiting his friends to go rob these innocent people.
12:25Michael.
12:27Michael.
12:28Step back, old man!
12:30Okay, okay.
12:32Everybody say calm for a second.
12:35You can only imagine how scared they must have been.
12:41Oh!
12:43Stop!
12:43Don't do this!
12:45Please, stop!
12:51I got him!
12:53Take everything you can find.
13:04It was just chaos and shock.
13:06They're just hoping that these people took whatever they wanted to take from their house and just left.
13:18Do you realize how easy this is?
13:23It's like taking candy from my baby.
13:31We good, mate?
13:36Let's move.
13:40They came for money or anything that could lead to money, but they came for more than that.
13:45They came for Reggie and Carol Sumner.
13:49It's just a horrifying thing to think of.
13:57You're grabbed, thrown in the trunk of your car, and you're left there.
14:13Tramped inside the trunk of their own car, Reggie and Carol have no way of knowing that their nightmare is
14:20about to get even more horrified.
14:28You're right.
14:45Sheriff's office.
14:46Hello.
14:47I need to file a missing persons report.
14:49Well, two, I guess.
14:52The caller's name is Rhonda Branson, a resident of South Carolina whose parents live in Jacksonville.
14:59She had a very good relationship with her mother.
15:02She called her almost every day, even sometimes more than once a day.
15:06So when she didn't hear from her mother, and she wasn't answering her calls, Rhonda was very worried, and she
15:13knew instinctively that something was wrong.
15:16Now, what did you think the name was again, ma'am?
15:19Sumner, Reggie and Carol Sumner.
15:22Alright, I'll send an officer by to check things out.
15:24I'm sure everything's fine, but we'll let you know either way.
15:27Talk to you soon.
15:47Mr. and Mrs. Sumner?
15:49Jacksonville Sheriff's Department.
15:51Anybody home?
15:58Mr. and Mrs. Sumner?
16:04Hello?
16:10Anybody home?
16:12Mr. and Mrs. Sumner?
16:39It was kind of messy.
16:41There's plates out.
16:43There's food out.
16:43It looks like somebody just picked up, and in a moment's notice left.
16:48The house looked like somebody had left quickly, and the Sumner's car was gone.
16:58So at that point, an investigation began, and all of Jacksonville became very aware of the Sumners and the search
17:05to try to find them.
17:12Officers send out details of the missing vehicle across the state, and it's not long before they get a hit.
17:20Detectives received word of a car that had been abandoned in the middle of nowhere.
17:27We got the information pretty quick.
17:30We were there, and I went to the scene and saw the car.
17:37It was a distance away from Jacksonville, probably 40 or 50 miles.
17:43We ran the tag number, and positively identified the vehicle as the one that belonged to the Sumners.
18:08No keys.
18:12The car is on top.
18:14The car is on top.
18:14They're not in the middle of nowhere.
18:14Maybe they had car trouble while they went to find help.
18:31Hey, Marv.
18:34Pop the trunk.
19:02Oh, my God.
19:04After Reggie and Carol Sumner went missing from their Jacksonville, Florida home
19:13Detectives have found the couple's car abandoned 38 miles outside the city
19:22Hey, Marv, pop the trunk
19:29You find anything?
19:37Nope. Nothing here
19:45Investigators don't yet realize that the car was only where the Sumner's terror started four days prior
20:01You've got these two people that are bound. They've got tape, you know
20:06Obstructing their ability to freely move and freely breathe one can imagine the discomfort and and the horror of being
20:14in that trunk
20:15Oh
20:26You know
20:39What do you learn from us?
20:46Don't move
20:56Don't move
20:57Leave her alone
20:59Bound and helpless Reggie Sumner is forced to watch his terrified wife suffer as her captors wrench off her jewelry
21:07Including her wedding ring
21:09It's just a horrifying thing to think of
21:11You're grabbed can't fight back
21:14They're probably just praying for the best
21:20But finally, Reggie breaks free
21:29Five hours after investigators discover the Sumner's abandoned car
21:34Jacksonville police receive a confusing call
21:40Sheriff's office
21:41How you doing?
21:42I'm out of town with my wife right now and just got a call from a neighbor of ours there
21:45in Jacksonville
21:46She says our garage is open and looks like our car is missing
21:51I understand sir. I can file a report for you
21:53Now can you tell me your name?
21:55Yes, this is Reggie Sumner
21:58You said your name is Reggie Sumner
22:00That's right
22:01We'll be back home in a few days and we'll clear all this up in person
22:04Mm-hmm
22:04Mark
22:05Mark
22:07It's Reggie Sumner
22:11Well, Mr. Sumner, we've been looking for you for a couple days now
22:14Is your wife there with you, sir?
22:16Of course, just a minute
22:18They realize this is not the voice of a man who's a little bit older
22:22That sounds like somebody in their 20s or 30s
22:27Hello, this is Carol
22:29Uh, yes, ma'am
22:30So you said your car's gone missing?
22:32Yes, sir
22:35And both you and your husband out of town right now, correct?
22:38That's correct
22:40Well, I'd like to check in with someone just to make sure everything else at your house is in order
22:44Uh, could I get the number or the address of the neighbor that called in about your missing car?
22:51Hello?
22:53Hello, ma'am?
22:55No, ma'am?
23:00The antenna goes up and you realize that this is not right
23:04There's something suspicious here
23:06Yes, can I get the name and phone records associated with the number that just called line 6784?
23:13As soon as you can, thanks
23:18Oh, my God.
23:55I'm about trying to play hero, let's have a talk.
24:05I know about the money, Reggie.
24:08The cash you got from selling your home back in Charleston,
24:11and you.
24:14You're going to tell me how to get my hands on it.
24:20You can have whatever you want.
24:22Anything.
24:23Really.
24:24I'll give it all to you.
24:26Just don't hurt us.
24:30It's a little late for that, isn't it?
24:35Now where's it at?
24:40This the one?
24:43Then that leaves all that cash?
24:51Yes.
24:52That's it.
24:53Now just leave us alone.
24:58How do I know you're not lying to me?
24:59I am not lying.
25:04I'm not lying to you.
25:07Just take the card.
25:09The pin number is 2253.
25:12I promise.
25:19Just don't hurt my wife.
25:21Oh.
25:25Oh.
25:27Oh.
25:29Oh.
25:29Oh.
25:29Oh.
25:30Oh.
25:31Oh.
25:39Oh.
25:40they try another tactic I've got no activity on any credit cards in the
25:47normal course of missing person investigation police will automatically
25:51look at credit card statements bank statements so they can see what steps
25:58they've taken as far as where if they've gone they were looking for anything that
26:03might be out of the ordinary and in this case it was something that was out of
26:07the ordinary well check this out these are the bank withdrawals from the
26:12beginning of the year all the way till June only two ATM transactions the whole
26:18time these are the withdrawals just within the last week 17 18 19 20 13 in
26:27Jacksonville and 7 in Charleston South Carolina so either the Summoners become
26:32big spinners or someone else is using their card
26:40at least one of those spots where the ATM card was used a photograph was taken of
26:46the person using the card and a young 20-something year old male was seen in
26:53that photograph it was very obvious that was not Reggie Summoner
27:08four days after Reggie and Carol Sumner were abducted from their home
27:13Jacksonville deputies make a startling discovery
27:16either the Summoners become big spinners or someone else is using their card
27:20here they are in the ATM on the surveillance camera seeing a young man withdrawing money using Reggie
27:27Carole Sumner's ATM card

31:43you must be tiffany cole
31:46when you find
31:47everything that this couple had
31:49in these people's possession and you have them on tape
31:54on an ATM surveillance camera withdrawing money,
31:58it's pretty obvious they have something to do
31:59with what's going on.
32:01But the question remains, where are Reggie and Carol?
32:16What's happening?
32:19Stop!
32:26You don't have to do this!
32:38Tiffany had known the Sumners, knew how generous they were,
32:43knew how loving they were.
32:45And she still was the one who led Michael and the others to them.
33:02So they take the three suspects and they interview them separately.
33:12Come on, Michael.
33:14You've got to let me know.
33:16Where are they?
33:19I don't know.
33:27Where are they, Michael?
33:32Where are they now?
33:42Michael Jackson, of course, trying to be slick, as he always was, doesn't admit to anything.
33:51Okay.
33:54I'm going to give you one more chance before we send you upstate.
34:07Even after more than an hour in the hot seat, Michael never confesses to the crime, but detectives do get
34:14one detail out of him.
34:16He was the one who was posing as Reggie Sumner in the phone call.
34:22Michael?
34:22Can you tell me your name?
34:24Yes.
34:25This is Reggie Sumner.
34:27But he denied any involvement in their disappearance.
34:33Get them out of here!
34:45Michael's friend Alan Wade refuses to talk to police, which means any hope of finding the Sumners rides on information
34:53from their third and final suspect, Tiffany Cole.
35:03Come on.
35:07Have a seat.
35:17Okay, Tiffany.
35:19Let's talk about what happened to the Summers.
35:27Go on.
35:28Tell me.
35:32I wasn't there when it happened.
35:35I was outside in the car.
35:37Michael was the one who went inside the house to rob them.
35:40Him and our friend Alan.
35:45And some guy named Bruce.
35:48Bruce?
35:49Bruce?
35:50Who's Bruce?
35:51Tiffany does give them the name of a fourth person.
35:55And probably the key to solving the mystery was Bruce Nixon.
36:04All right, Tiffany.
36:06I need you to think really hard.
36:10Because I need to know.
36:13Where are the Summers?
36:16Huh?
36:19Where are they?
36:21Huh?
36:26Where are they?
36:36Six days after Reggie and Carol Sumner were reported missing, Jacksonville detectives know they are running out of time to
36:45find the couple alive.
36:48We know the Summers are missing.
36:50We know the Summers are missing.
36:50We have these people connected.
36:51But now they've got to try to figure out what happened step by step.
36:55And Tiffany is the key to this crime.
36:57All right, Tiffany.
36:58I need you to think really hard.
37:02Because I need to know.
37:06Where are the Summers now?
37:10Where are they?
37:11I don't know.
37:12I have no idea where they are.
37:14I swear, I have no idea.
37:15I don't believe you.
37:17I swear, I have no idea where they are right now.
37:23I don't know.
37:24I don't know.
37:29Tiffany Cole doesn't admit to playing any part in the Sumners' disappearance.
37:34Tiffany does tell them that she does know the Sumners, that she did know that she was part of this
37:39robbery.
37:40But that's it.
37:42Investigators' final hope is that one of the accomplices, Bruce Nixon, will finally give them the answers they need.
37:55Bruce Nixon was a friend of Alan Wade's.
37:59Police find him living not far away.
38:01Just a guy in Baker County, McClenney, 30 minutes from Jacksonville.
38:06They had him interviewed, and he was willing to come and help find the Sumner's hand.
38:14We said, sure, we'll go with you.
38:17We're getting close.
38:19We're maneuvering around this brush and trees, and finally we come up on a little bit open area.
38:42This is where I have you.
38:46But what happened?
38:54Bruce.
38:58This is where we buried the Sumner's.
39:01Stop!
39:13We buried him alive.
39:22You could tell that fresh dirt had been removed, and there was just an area that had been covered back
39:28up.
39:29So we didn't really see the shock that you would normally say of a crime scene.
39:36But we were going through a lot by standing there.
39:42It's emotional for you.
39:44We are human beings, and we are not made of steel.
39:50Bruce tells detectives it all started when Michael and Tiffany learned the Sumners were sitting on a large pile of
39:57cash.
39:59It has to be here somewhere.
40:03Mortgage payments, tax returns, vehicle registrations.
40:13Bank statements.
40:15Nearly 100 grand off of that little house.
40:18That's all in one account.
40:38Bruce, we already know about the robbery.
40:41But we need you to tell us what happened after you left.
40:46And how'd you wind up in these woods?
40:48Tiffany said she wasn't there for that part, so we need you to fill in the holes.
40:51She was here.
40:53She was with us the whole time.
40:55We planned it and everything.
41:04Here.
41:05This spot looks good.
41:10How deep do you want it?
41:13They don't call it six feet under for nothing.
41:16They dug a hole that was six feet deep and four feet wide.
41:20It's not a small hole, and they left that hole there with the shovel so that it would be available
41:26when they were ready to put Reggie and Carol in their grave.
41:33On July 8, 2005, the foursome returned to the woods to carry out the final step in their heinous plan.
41:55There's so much dirt in there that they begin to have their airway obstructed because the dirt is pressing on
42:01them and they can't breathe.
42:06Tragically, they were alive until they were actually completely covered with the dirt.
42:13When police discovered the bodies and dug them out, they found the Saubners hugging each other.
42:21They were holding hands, and it was just heartbreaking for the detectives on the scene to see these two people,
42:30who were very much in love, die in such a horrifying way.
42:38With this mountain of evidence, it doesn't take a long time to convince a jury that these people are guilty.
42:46Bruce Nixon only got 50 years on his deal.
42:49The other three sentenced to death.
42:54There is not a punishment that is harsh enough for people like this.
42:57But they deserve to be put to death if anybody does.
43:02Surprise!
43:04The reason that Reggie and Carol Sumner were killed is 100% about greed.
43:13It's just one of those cases that's always been with me,
43:16imagining what these poor people went through,
43:18and then trying to figure out why anyone would be so cruel.
43:26I've never been able to answer that question.
43:41I've never been able to answer that question.
