00:28The End
00:29He's playing with you yet!
00:32He's in me.
00:33He's in me. He's in me.
00:35No, we're not going to die.
00:37We're not going to die.
00:58Let's go. Let's go.
00:59Run! Run!
01:22Is there evil?
01:26I've done a lot of looking into what evil means.
01:32And evil is the wickedness of man.
01:36When we allow our desires
01:39and our selfish lusts to take over
01:40what we want to do,
01:43that is basically
01:45the definition of evil.
02:01Logan is about 35 miles
02:03southeast of Columbus, Ohio.
02:08Once a thriving coal mining town
02:10in the foothills of Appalachia,
02:12its golden era lost its shine decades ago
02:15when the mines shut down
02:17and the economy collapsed.
02:20You have to want to go to Logan
02:22to be there anymore.
02:25But Todd Schultz and Annette Cooper
02:27were both born and bred here.
02:31And like a lot of teenagers,
02:33especially when they're in love,
02:35they're looking for a way out of their small town.
02:39Todd's the second oldest of four
02:41from a well-known and well-respected family in Logan.
02:45My brother Todd was 19.
02:47And he'd been out of high school over a year.
02:50He'd gone to work for a printing company in Logan.
02:52He was also a volunteer firefighter.
02:55Todd, stop it.
02:57Annette was going to Hawking College.
03:00She was doing very well there in the computer programming industry.
03:03And she was looking to further her education
03:06either at Ohio University in Lancaster
03:08or possibly going to Ohio State University.
03:11While Todd's family is very close,
03:14Annette's is equally fractured.
03:16The oldest of two daughters,
03:18she comes from a broken home on the outskirts of Logan.
03:28If I do well on this,
03:30and get all of my credits for transfer,
03:32we could find ourselves a little apartment near campus.
03:35What?
03:36You just don't love living with my parents and my brother?
03:39Well, it's a lot better than living with my stepdad.
03:42That's for sure.
03:45Todd and Annette were both living with his family
03:47on the west side of Logan.
03:49He was at the request of Todd, basically,
03:51because Todd knew of some allegations of sexual abuse
03:54by her stepfather, Dale Johnston.
03:57And Todd did not want to see his girlfriend
03:59in that type of an environment.
04:10I cannot wait to have some privacy.
04:12Get out of here.
04:14Live how we want to live.
04:31Todd, stop.
04:37Yeah, I heard something.
04:45Hello?
04:46Hey, who's out there?
04:53It's getting late.
04:54I've got to pick up Eric from soccer practice.
04:56Let's get out of here, all right?
04:59Todd that evening was supposed to take his younger brother
05:02to a soccer practice.
05:03And then later at 6.30, he had a meeting
05:05for the volunteer fire department.
05:10Todd?
05:13Todd did not come home.
05:18Totally out of character.
05:25Hi, Mom.
05:27Hi.
05:29Have you seen Todd today?
05:33My mom called every relative we could think of
05:36to ask around, see if anyone had seen them
05:38or had any clue of where they might have been.
05:41Okay.
05:43I'll keep going.
05:45Love you.
05:46Bye.
05:48No one has seen Todd or Annette since yesterday afternoon,
05:52including Annette's parents,
05:53who are now just as worried as Todd's family.
05:56My mom had a gut intuition that something bad had happened,
06:00something tragic had happened to them.
06:13I want to report a missing person.
06:18It's my son and his girlfriend.
06:27People don't often go missing in Logan, Ohio.
06:30People don't even lock their doors.
06:33So after 24 hours with no trace of Todd and Annette,
06:37local law enforcement isn't quite sure what to make of it.
06:40They reach out to Todd's parents for more information.
06:44Can you describe what your son was wearing when you last saw him?
06:49Blue jeans.
06:51And a t-shirt.
06:54Ma'am, would it be possible if the two perhaps, you know,
06:59ran off together, eloped?
07:02And left all their clothes?
07:05Their toothbrushes?
07:07Keys to the car?
07:10No, I don't think that's what happened.
07:16I'm telling you, something happened to them.
07:21Something bad.
07:23Todd has never run off in his life.
07:26He doesn't drink or do drugs.
07:29He's a wonderful, wonderful boy.
07:34Ma'am, um, do you know of anyone that might have wanted to hurt them?
07:47Why don't you go on over to Dale Johnston's place?
07:52Ask him if he knows anyone who would want to hurt Annette.
07:57I know my mom was not shy about mentioning why Annette was living with us.
08:03The rumors that Annette had been molested.
08:10Dale Johnston?
08:12That's right.
08:14Not too many people knew too much about Dale Johnston.
08:17He wasn't bred and born in Logan, Ohio.
08:20So he was sort of considered an outcast even when he was living there.
08:24Sir, I'm looking for Todd and Annette.
08:25They didn't come home last night and the Schultzes are worried.
08:28He's seen the kids, heard from them.
08:31Dale didn't seem as concerned about the missings as the rest of the Schultz family as well as the rest
08:36of the Johnston family.
08:38It was not the behavior of someone who wanted to cooperate in finding my brother and Annette.
08:43That was the behavior of somebody who was being very suspicious.
08:49Sir, I'm just trying to locate Todd and Annette.
08:51I know that she moved out.
08:54I haven't seen either one of them.
08:56I haven't heard anything from them either.
09:05Deputy, the next time you plan on coming to my property, you call.
09:19Todd and Annette don't show up that day or the next.
09:23By that point, everyone in town knows they're missing and they're all looking for them.
09:31In the woods, on the farms, and along the Hawking River that runs right through town.
09:36Todd and Annette!
09:39But there's no sign of them anywhere.
09:42Todd and Annette!
09:44Daily it was in the paper.
09:47I can remember people talking about it, wondering where they were at.
09:5510 more days go by.
09:59Then, on the banks of the Hawking River, as one mystery comes to a close, another, far more terrifying chapter
10:07is just beginning.
10:09God!
10:11Check!
10:23Station command, station command, radio check.
10:41Oh.
10:42Oh, God in heaven.
10:45Oh.
10:46Oh, God in heaven.
10:53Command, this is Jacobs.
10:55I'm on the river.
10:56I'm on the river, past the bridge.
10:58I think I found something.
11:01Roger that.
11:02Should we send somebody?
11:04Send everyone.
11:13Ten days after teenage sweethearts Todd Schultz and Annette Cooper go missing from a tiny town in southern Ohio.
11:19Todd!
11:21Annette!
11:22A rookie deputy makes a horrific discovery.
11:30Oh.
11:31Oh, God in heaven.
11:34He found the body, basically, from the legs up and from the neck down, with no arms.
11:43Just a torso.
11:46And then, just a short time later, they found a second torso, a little bit down the river, a little
11:52bit closer to the trestle bridge.
11:56Investigators can only assume the torsos belong to missing teens Todd and Annette.
12:03Now, the search is on for the rest of their bodies.
12:09Okay, listen up.
12:10Keep your eyes open for anything.
12:13And...
12:14Well, anybody.
12:17It's not long before another deputy makes another discovery, even more gruesome than the last.
12:24Just a few hundred feet from where the torsos were discovered.
12:52Station command.
12:53Station command.
12:54I think we've got something.
12:57Our understanding, what they found was six or seven shallow graves that someone had dug to bury the body parts
13:05in.
13:07And through further digging, they eventually found the heads.
13:12It's worse than a horror movie because it's real.
13:17After breaking the news to Todd and Annette's devastated families, investigators start the search for the person or persons responsible
13:25for the grisly killings.
13:28Who would do something like this?
13:31Why?
13:33I wish I could tell you why.
13:35I can only tell you how.
13:37The coroner determined that both Todd and Annette's cause of death was from a double gunshot wound to the head.
13:43The dismemberment came afterwards.
13:47All right. Bag this up. Take it out to the lab.
13:51Murder is rare in Logan, Ohio.
13:55Dismemberment?
13:56Unheard of.
13:58Nobody involved in this case had ever seen anything like this.
14:02It turned Logan on its ear.
14:05We didn't know who did this.
14:06We didn't know why.
14:07Could it have been just in Logan?
14:08Was it someone in the area who was passing through who just came across Todd and Annette?
14:16The local sheriff's department is overwhelmed by the magnitude of the case.
14:21Yes, ma'am. We're doing everything we can. I'll pass this along.
14:25People were saying that they're sleeping with baseball bats under their beds and they were sticking a knife on the
14:33inside of the door.
14:35Phones ring off the hook with panicked citizens offering their opinions on who was capable of committing such horror.
14:43He been bleeding?
14:46Where was he cut?
14:48Uh-huh.
14:52Okay. I will pass this on to a detective and someone will get back to you.
14:57When?
14:59Soon.
15:03Despite countless calls and hundreds of leads, nothing sticks.
15:08The longer it took with no results, I think the more rumors started and the more panicked the whole town
15:16became.
15:17To the point where I think people were afraid to let their children out and play for the mere fact
15:21that they may come up missing like Todd and Annette did.
15:25When the investigation lags on for months, the people of Logan pour on the pressure to make an arrest.
15:31The cops need a break.
15:33And soon, they get it.
15:36A big one.
15:39Almost three weeks after the killings, a local man comes forward.
15:43Thanks for coming in, Steve.
15:44He tells police he thought he saw Todd and Annette in downtown Logan on the day they went missing.
15:51Please have a seat.
15:53He swears they weren't alone.
15:55He's just not sure who they were with.
15:58Now, months after the murders, investigators will try anything to jog his memory.
16:04Even hypnosis.
16:05They took that individual and actually had him hypnotized to try to get a clearer picture of what he actually
16:11saw that night.
16:12Sometimes under hypnosis, they can give a more definitive answer.
16:18Steven, I'm afraid I have to warn you that you may experience very intense visions or memories.
16:27Lean into them.
16:28Do not try to make them go away.
16:40Steven, I want you to close your eyes and relax.
16:46Let go of everything but the sound of my voice.
16:51I'm going to count backwards from ten.
16:55When I reach one, you will have entered a state of deep relaxation.
17:02Ten.
17:04Nine.
17:06Eight.
17:08One.
17:12Steven, I want you to think about what it is that you saw.
17:16I want you to speak out loud about what you saw.
17:21What you saw in Logan.
17:25There was a man.
17:29Tall.
17:32Angry.
17:34There's a young man.
17:36The girl is upset.
17:39She doesn't want to go.
17:41She doesn't want to get in the truck.
17:43But he's forcing her in.
17:46He can't.
17:47He can't help her.
17:49Steven.
17:50I want you to look at the angry man.
17:55I want you to tell me what you see.
18:01I'm trying to see.
18:03Steven.
18:04Tell me what you see.
18:08Steven.
18:09Steven.
18:12I know who it is.
18:28Months after Todd Schultz and Annette Cooper's dismembered bodies were found in a series of shallow graves.
18:36Investigators get a big break.
18:39Under hypnosis, a witness says he saw the young lovers on the afternoon they disappeared.
18:44And they weren't alone.
18:46Steven.
18:47Tell me what you see.
18:50I know who he is.
18:55This witness actually saw what he thought to be Todd and Annette forced into a car.
19:02Forced into a car by someone he believes looked like Dale Johnston, Annette's stepfather.
19:08So that gave the cops their eyewitness to the abduction of Todd and Annette.
19:16With the backdrop of rumors that he'd sexually abused Annette, cops decide it's time to bring Dale in for questioning.
19:33Why don't you tell me why I'm here?
19:37We just want the truth, Dale.
19:40Dale, the truth?
19:42About you and Annette?
19:43I never touched her.
19:48Annette's previous boyfriends would say that Dale Johnston was very protective of Annette and that he was also sort of
19:56jealous of any relationship she might have with other boys.
20:02Are you jealous, Dale?
20:04Jealous of her and Todd?
20:07Jealous?
20:09No.
20:11Did you have a fight?
20:13Is that what happened?
20:15Did you just get out of hand?
20:18Dale, did Todd get out of line?
20:20No.
20:20Is that what happened, Dale?
20:22Did you shoot those two kids and cut them up, Dale?
20:26The investigation was already focused on Dale, so everybody, you know, the whole town believed Dale had killed these two
20:34kids.
20:35He was a meat cutter at a local grocery, which also pushed the local law enforcement into thinking that if
20:41somebody was dismembered that Dale would have been very capable of doing that.
20:47I told you once, I'll tell you again, I was setting out hay bales on a farm.
20:59I did not kill them.
21:02After several hours of relentless interrogation, Dale Johnston sticks to his story.
21:07He had nothing to do with the murders of Todd and Annette.
21:12All right.
21:13That's all for tonight, Dale.
21:15Oh, uh, there's one more thing.
21:18We have a warrant to search your house.
21:23I got nothing to hide.
21:29But detectives suspect Dale has plenty to hide, and they're hoping a search of his property will prove it.
21:38To know that the two victims were shot, you would look for bullets, you would look for weapons.
21:46And since Todd and Annette were also dismembered, they look for knives, too.
21:59Sir.
22:06That looks like a .22.
22:08Bag it and send it to ballistics, but keep looking.
22:11Almost everybody in town has a .22.
22:13Yes, sir.
22:22Sir.
22:26Does everyone in town have one of these?
22:34Bag that, too.
22:35And get the boots.
22:36Yes, sir.
22:39A machete and a rifle.
22:42Dale Johnston's claim of innocence is getting shakier by the minute.
22:45And soon, it totally collapses when the existence of naked photos of Annette Cooper comes to light.
22:54Basically, the photos of Annette were with no clothes on, and they were posed pictures, some of her wearing a
23:00gun belt, some of her holding a rifle.
23:03The photos were allegedly taken by Dale Johnston.
23:06Some say he handed them over to police himself.
23:10He thought he was being helpful.
23:12You know, he thought it helped them identify the body parts.
23:15Instead, it helps investigators build their case against Dale Johnston.
23:27Investigators are zeroing in on Dale Johnston as the main suspect in the murders of his stepdaughter, Annette Cooper, and
23:34her boyfriend, Todd Schultz.
23:36And when questionable photos of Annette surface, allegedly taken by Dale Johnston himself,
23:43they're all but convinced he's the killer.
23:49Police arrest Dale and charge him with two counts of aggravated murder, almost one year to the day after the
23:56teenagers were found slaughtered.
23:58I think we were informed of Dale's arrest the day they were going out to the farm to arrest him.
24:06It was a relief.
24:08Finally, we're going to get some justice.
24:10Finally, things are going to happen.
24:12I had the story in my mind.
24:14I knew the motive.
24:16I knew the means.
24:17I knew how he did it.
24:20The puzzle pieces all fit for me.
24:22I believe without a shadow of a doubt he was guilty.
24:30Four months after his arrest, Dale Johnston goes to trial.
24:36The state alleged that Dale Johnston kidnapped Todd and Annette in downtown Logan, forced them into his vehicle.
24:45Todd! No!
24:47And Dale shot the kids in the trailer, took them outside and butchered them, then loaded the body parts into
24:55feed sacks and somehow got those body parts into the river.
25:04The defense argues that all of the evidence taken from Dale's property is circumstantial.
25:11None of the evidence that they had recovered from Dale Johnston's house was of any evidentiary value.
25:17Some of it was circumstantial.
25:21They had taken a gun and a knife, but none of the weapons that were recovered from the search warrants
25:29matched any of the evidence that was recovered from the bodies.
25:32Nothing that they took from the residents or the vehicles linked Dale Johnston to the murders.
25:41Even Dale himself takes the stand to profess his innocence.
25:46The verdict came back as guilty as charged, and Dale Johnston was sentenced to death row.
25:56When the guilty verdict came down, he didn't show any emotion.
26:00I remember that his attorneys, their jaws dropped like, what?
26:04You know, they were astounded, as was I.
26:07But Dale was pretty stoic through it.
26:21I believe Dale served seven years of his sentence.
26:25Then, in a shocking decision, the Court of Appeals grants him a new trial.
26:30His conviction is thrown out.
26:37Without new evidence or the resources to try him again, the state decides to drop the case.
26:44Instead of facing execution, Dale Johnston is now a free man, and the town of Logan is outraged.
26:52The wounds that were healing, the scar never got a chance to be created.
26:57It was ripped open again.
27:00Investigators are back to square one in this eight-year-old case, and with no other suspects to pursue,
27:06they're forced to turn their attention to newer, more pressing cases.
27:10We figured justice would never be done, so I put it in God's hands.
27:15We figured that, ultimately, God is going to be the judge.
27:18The murders of Todd Schultz and Annette Cooper remain unsolved for 25 years.
27:26But in the fall of 2007, a cold case squad decides to take another look at the murders that have
27:33haunted Logan for so long.
27:35They tried to relocate all of the evidence, and they wanted to start from scratch and to start redoing everything
27:41to make sure that all of the questions were answered properly.
27:44Old witnesses are re-interviewed, new witnesses come forward, and one woman in particular, a Logan native named Judy Linscott,
27:53turns the case on its head during a routine visit to her parole officer.
28:05Who's going on, Judy?
28:07Great.
28:10Judy got into trouble with the law with minor thefts or disorderly conducts, and she was placed on probation through
28:17the local courts.
28:38Judy's parole officer was part of the original investigation into Todd and Annette's murders, and though it's been years since
28:44he was actively involved in the case,
28:46the grisly killings are never far from his thoughts.
28:51He took it upon himself to talk to as many people as he could to see if anything new was
28:56coming up and went to home site again.
28:58But when he asks Judy Linscott if she remembers anything about the murders, he's stunned by her response.
29:05I might know a thing or two.
29:10Go on.
29:13Back when the murders happened, Judy was married to Kenny Linscott, a petty criminal who was known around town for
29:19dealing drugs out of his house.
29:22According to Judy, on the afternoon Todd and Annette went missing, people were in and out of the Linscott house,
29:28partying all day long.
29:29And you remember who?
29:31The usual text bill.
29:34Some guy named Chester.
29:36You know who's Chester?
29:38Who knows? Assuming he was some guy he did drugs with.
29:43Judy tells her parole officer that at one point, Kenny and the stranger she only remembers as Chester left the
29:50house.
29:50They were gone for hours, and her husband, Kenny, came home alone.
29:55But when he came home, he had a big ol' cut on his arm, and he was covered in blood.
30:03Cut clear to the bone, I tell ya.
30:06I asked him what happened, and he said, shut it.
30:12So I did.
30:16Why didn't you tell anyone?
30:19I did.
30:23Back in 1982, Judy found Kenny's cut suspicious enough that she called the cops to report it.
30:29So he showed up, and he'd been bleeding?
30:33Okay, I will pass this on to a detective.
30:42They never explored it because they concentrated too much on Dale Johnston.
30:49I mean, they even had Kenny Linscott calling before the bodies were found, asking if they had found anything,
30:55which I would have thought would have been rather odd, considering that, at that point, they hadn't found the bodies
31:00yet.
31:01Can I go now?
31:03Uh, yeah.
31:05Yeah, Judy, you can go.
31:10I'm Judy.
31:22Now, 25 years after the murders, investigators decide to talk to Kenny Linscott himself, to see what he remembers.
31:32Kenny.
31:34Kenny.
31:34Kenny Linscott.
31:36Yeah.
31:37I'm a special investigator with the prosecutor's office.
31:41Uh, you got a minute?
31:42I guess. What's up?
31:44Look, uh, Kenny, I know it's a long time back, and...
31:48but I have to ask you about Annette and Todd, them kids that was killed back in 82 in the
31:53woods.
31:55I know who they are.
31:57Yeah. Let's, uh, let's talk about a phone call you made.
32:05You see, it says you called the cops asking if they had found any bodies yet.
32:12Right?
32:14What of it?
32:16Well, that was, uh, five days before they were found.
32:21We didn't even know they were dead yet, Kenny.
32:24So I guess I'm wondering, why did you call the cops asking if they'd found anybody?
32:30I got nothing left to say to you.
32:34But the detective isn't done with Kenny yet.
32:37He wants to know more about the mysterious man he partied with that day, known to his ex-wife Judy
32:42as Chester.
32:43Does the name Chester mean anything to you?
32:48With further digging, they discovered that Chester is Chester McKnight,
32:52a lifelong criminal who was known to stop through Logan from time to time.
32:58He was more further south down towards Athens, Ohio.
33:01But he had stayed in Logan once in a while in a place called the Animal House,
33:05which is like a flop house for a bunch of drug addicts.
33:09It doesn't take long to track down Chester.
33:13Chester was in prison for his third time.
33:16His third conviction was for a child predator sting.
33:23I had never heard of the name Chester McKnight prior to this.
33:27Didn't know him, didn't know who he was, didn't know anything about him.
33:31But investigators are about to discover a lot about Chester McKnight
33:36and get answers to questions that have tormented the town of Logan, Ohio for a quarter of a century.
33:42But then when I lay in bed and everything, you know, I think about it.
33:48I think about it.
33:5325 years after the murder and mutilation of teenagers Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz,
33:59a new team of investigators has zeroed in on two new suspects, Kenny Linscott, a native of Logan, Ohio,
34:06and Chester McKnight, a drifter who was known to be in Logan on the day of the killings.
34:13It became known that Chester was part of a burglary ring where he and Kenny Linscott were partners.
34:20Now in prison for an unrelated crime, investigators pay him a visit
34:24and ask him what he remembers about that sunny afternoon in October of 1982.
34:30What was going on there?
34:32We was partying, drinking, drugging.
34:34Okay.
34:35Just 24 years old at the time, Chester says he and 21-year-old Kenny Linscott had been partying for
34:41the entire day.
34:43It kind of drives me talking now.
34:45Oh, Todd, LSD, you are a little bit PCP.
34:53And so it came to a certain point where you guys decided to leave together.
34:56Mm-hmm.
34:56And what was the reason for leaving? Why were you guys leaving together?
34:59Just to get out.
35:00Okay.
35:01Going stir crazy.
35:02Yeah.
35:06We never did get an exact or detailed report on what transpired that evening.
35:13I believe maybe Todd and Nett were walking, maybe seeing Chester and Kenny.
35:17Woo!
35:20Look who it is!
35:23Nett.
35:25And Todd.
35:28Hey, Kenny.
35:30What are you two doing out here?
35:32We're just going out for a walk.
35:35We're heading home.
35:36Nah, nah.
35:38Party's just getting started.
35:41Annette, right?
35:45Chester goes on to tell detectives that he immediately set his sights on Annette Cooper.
35:51Did you have it in your mind to force her into some kind of sexual act?
35:57Yes.
35:58Okay.
36:11You want to get high?
36:14No.
36:16No, we've got to get going.
36:19We've got to go.
36:20All right?
36:22You got to go?
36:25Huh?
36:25Yeah.
36:26You can go wherever you want.
36:28She's staying here.
36:30Todd Schultz did everything he could to protect his girlfriend.
36:34But in the end, it wasn't enough.
36:38What are you going to do?
36:44All right.
36:46Annette.
36:47Just run.
36:48Go.
36:48Annette, just go.
37:04Annette, just go!
37:05Oh!
37:14Head out to that clearing.
37:42Get up, get up, get up.
37:44Run, run!
38:12In the final moments of the chase, with the two crazed young thugs closing in, Todd finds
38:19himself staring down the barrel of a .22 caliber gun.

39:46back with a knife and a machete and they began dismembering the bodies the motive
39:54for the dismemberment nothing more than a drug-fueled attempt to get rid of the
39:59evidence these were not done by anyone who butchered or knew what they were
40:07doing they were hacked Chester McKnight pled guilty and pled to a life sentence in the Ohio
40:24prison systems and that's where he'll spend the rest of his natural life
40:30as for Kenny Linscott he was charged with first-degree murder but he never confessed
40:42Kenny you have a right to remain silent anything you say can and will be used against you in a
40:51court of law you have a right to an attorney and if you can't afford one well they'll get one
40:58for you
40:58Kenny Kenny's lawyer got what I call the deal of the millennium he got a first-degree murder charge
41:04reduced to misdemeanor abuse of a corpse and that's what Kenny pleaded guilty to he'd already spent
41:13six months in jail waiting for this trial to happen so he'd already served his time he got to go
41:19home
41:21Kenny Linscott passed away in this past year Kenny had had some surgery on his legs and one morning he
41:28he began to bleed and they were unable to revive him and he died he reaped what he sowed
41:42they were innocent victims they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and that I think a sexual
41:47pervert took advantage of what situation he had and everything got out of hand and it escalated to the point
41:54where both Todd and Annette lost their lives
41:57it's a big waste it's a big waste of life he robbed two young adults of their lives he robbed
