00:11Where are you?
00:18It's the water.
00:20It's always been the water for her.
00:24She's in.
00:26She's in.
00:31No, Nate.
00:36Please, please, no, please don't.
00:49You'll find her.
00:50I don't know when, but you'll find her.
01:08I don't know when, but you'll find her.
01:11I don't know when.
01:14Generally speaking, witches and demons appear only in storybooks, but in Salem, Massachusetts, they're part of history.
01:24Whether the product of fear or faith, or the pure embodiment of evil, it seems clear, in this town, witches
01:38and demons remain very real.
01:53Martha Brailsford moved to Salem in the late 80s.
01:57She was actually descended from Roger Conant, who settled Salem, and she was attracted to the area because she wanted
02:04to be close to the sea.
02:07She just felt it in her soul, and when she met her husband, who also had a love of the
02:15sea, it was a perfect match.
02:19Brian Brailsford is a ferry captain down in Boston.
02:22In the nine years he and Martha have been married, there have been many nights his work has kept him
02:28out until dawn.
02:30But tonight, it's Martha who is yet to come home.
02:35He just was wrecking his brain, trying to figure out where she might be.
02:57Yeah, hello. No, no, no. I don't think it's an emergency, but I'm looking for someone.
03:05And my wife, her name is Martha Brailsford. She's 37 years old.
03:12Okay.
03:14No one matching Martha's description has checked into the hospital.
03:18Yeah. Look, thanks for checking, all right? Yeah.
03:22So shortly after midnight, Brian's next call is to the person who's closest to his wife, her twin sister.
03:31Hello?
03:33What? Muriel.
03:34Brian, what's the matter?
03:35Martha's twin sister's name was Muriel. She was a librarian in Cambridge. They loved each other immensely. They were as
03:42close as twins are.
03:44Look, I know it's late, but I'm looking for Martha. Have you seen her today? Talked to her?
03:50Yeah, but it was this morning. She said she was going for a walk on Winter Island. Her usual.
03:54Martha was very predictable. You could set your watch by her.
03:58Oh, my God. Something's happened. She would never not call.
04:01Brian, I'm coming over.
04:02Look, Muriel, please, don't panic. Not yet.
04:06Martha's a tough cookie.
04:08I'm going to go look for her now.
04:10You said the usual route?
04:12Yeah, her usual walk through the park.
04:15Please call me as soon as you find her.
04:18I will.
04:23Now, 1 a.m., Brian starts retracing every step of his wife's usual walking route along the Recreational Marine Park.
04:33Martha!
04:44Who's there?
04:50Somebody there?
05:17Hey!
05:19Hey!
05:20Stop!
05:25Get over here!
05:30What the hell are you doing out here so late?
05:33Nothing, mister. We were just, you know...
05:37Man, what are you doing out here?
05:39I'm looking for my wife.
05:41After searching for several hours, there's no sign of Martha anywhere in the park.
05:46So Brian keeps walking.
05:48Brian was up all night searching the beaches, searching all the known routes that he knew she took every day.
05:56But he waited until about 8 in the morning before going to the police.
06:05The first reaction isn't that it's going to be foul play.
06:07The first reaction isn't that it's going to be foul play.
06:08The first reaction is, he's a grown adult.
06:09Maybe things weren't adding up to the family.
06:11Maybe things weren't adding up to the friends.
06:13But there were certainly logical answers as to why she may have not come home that night.
06:18But when Martha doesn't return home the next day, or the day after that, Brian insists on filing a missing
06:25persons report.
06:29Sergeant Conrad Prosniewski of the Salem PD agrees to take the case.
06:37Brian Bransford?
06:38Oh, yeah. Hey, Detective, thank you for working so quickly.
06:41This is Muriel, Martha's sister, and my neighbor, Maggie.
06:48Can I talk to you in private, Brian?
06:50With the husband of a missing woman, we have to make sure that he's telling us the truth.
06:55We had to find out what kind of relationship they had.
06:58Was there any money problems?
07:00Anything, any boyfriends, girlfriends, all nine yards?
07:02We had to check it all out and try to rule him out or rule him in as a suspect.
07:07Did your wife mention where she was going or who she might be going with specifically?
07:11No, nothing. I mean, she never said anything, not to me.
07:15Did she have any enemies? Anyone who would want to hurt her? Anything like that?
07:20No. Everyone loved her, okay?
07:22She practically knew everyone in Salem.
07:25Brian, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but was Martha maybe seeing someone else?
07:32No, she wasn't.
07:35Were you?
07:37It's standard procedure for police to first look at the husband or the boyfriend when a woman is missing,
07:42because statistically, they're the most likely culprit.
07:46Brian, come on.
07:49Pretend you're a cop. You hear this story.
07:51I mean, what would you think?
07:55Look, I know it's your job to ask, all right?
07:58And believe me, I know where you're going with this.
07:59But the answer is no.
08:01There's no problems in our marriage.
08:04Okay, then.
08:06Just for the record, where were you yesterday?
08:08I was working.
08:10I was piloting a boat up to Provincetown.
08:12There's a million ways to check it out, so go ahead.
08:22Excuse me, detective.
08:24I wanted to talk to you along.
08:27I talked to Martha yesterday.
08:28I know where she was going.
08:30She was going on an all-day sale.
08:34Did she say who?
08:36Um, Tom.
08:37One of her friends, a guy named Tom something.
08:40I don't even know if she went.
08:42She just mentioned it, and I didn't want to say anything, you know, around Brian.
08:48She goes off sailing with a guy.
08:51Doesn't come back.
08:56Well, here she is, prepared to board.
08:59Wow, nice.
09:01What is she, 32-footer?
09:0236.
09:03She's got a good straight waterline, long beam, cabin below deck, even has a queen bed.
09:08Nice.
09:10Yeah.
09:12Yeah, that's nice.
09:14One of the biggest possibilities is if Martha went off with this gentleman sailing,
09:18well, how friendly was she with him?
09:19Is there a possibility that there may be some involvement with him?
09:22Was it an affair?
09:23Those are the kind of things that were going through in my mind.
09:25Come on, your turn.
09:27Oh, you don't know your own strength.
09:31All right, let's shove off.
09:39If she went off sailing with a man, my next job is to find that man and ask him,
09:45what happened to Martha?
10:00Three days after Martha Brailsford went missing from her tight-knit community in Salem, Massachusetts,
10:07Sergeant Conrad Prosniewski follows up on a critical lead.
10:11Someone saw Martha on the day she disappeared, and she wasn't alone.
10:15She was going on an all-day sail.
10:19Did she say who was?
10:20My last witnesses were saying that she went off sailing with a friend,
10:24and somebody actually said the name Tom, but not the last name.
10:30Tom turns out to be Tom Maimone, a relative newcomer to the area,
10:34who generally keeps to himself.
10:36Tom Maimone had just moved to the Willows the previous December,
10:41so he was not that well-known in the neighborhood.
10:44She met this guy, Tom.
10:46She walks her dog with him every once in a while.
10:48So naturally, I'm going to go see Tom, and that's exactly what happened.
10:54Salem PD.
10:55I was looking for the slip for Tom Maimone's boat.
10:58Maimone, huh?
11:00Slip A9, outside dock, facing out.
11:04What do you want with Tom?
11:06Just a question or two.
11:08His name came up in something is all.
11:10Well, I hope it's nothing serious.
11:12Poor man has enough on his plate.
11:14What do you mean?
11:15Just lost his wife to cancer.
11:18Good guy, Tom.
11:21He's a scientist, you know.
11:22He even worked at NASA.
11:24Saw him this morning headed out to the boat.
11:26He might still be there.
11:28Yeah.
11:40Can I help you with something?
11:42Uh, Salem Police.
11:43If you're Tom Maimone, I'm looking for you.
11:45Uh, to me, uh, what can I help you with?
11:48Officer?
11:49Detective.
11:50Uh, I got a couple questions about Martha Brails.
11:53Martha?
11:54Yeah, I'm sure I, I know her.
11:57Well, what'd she do?
11:58She's missing.
12:00Missing?
12:01When was the last time that she saw her?
12:03Um, I don't know.
12:04We walked our dogs maybe last Tuesday, last week.
12:10Man, this is, uh, it's a little bit of a shock to me.
12:14She's been really good to me since my wife passed away.
12:18So, you haven't seen her then?
12:20In the past couple of days?
12:22She wasn't on your boat?
12:25On the boat?
12:27No.
12:29Like I said, I, I saw her walking the dog on the beach last week.
12:33This is where things aren't going the way that they're supposed to be going is, I'm there
12:37to find out what happened to Martha.
12:39I'm thinking that Tom's going to give me something concrete because the friends are saying that
12:43he went sailing with her.
12:44He says that he didn't go sailing with her.
12:46And I knew that something was wrong.
12:48Things just aren't starting to add up.
12:51Well, if you think of anything else, you let me know, okay?
12:56Absolutely.
12:57I will.
12:59Tom looked like the guy that absolutely could attract women.
13:08Now I'm starting to think even more that it could be something else that was going on
13:12between Tom and Martha that they don't want to divulge.
13:16He doesn't want to divulge.
13:34Hey, you're blocking my son.
13:40Who wants a beer?
13:41I'll have one.
13:42Why not?
13:42Good.
13:44Here you go.
13:46Here we go.
13:47Cheers.
13:52Beer just tastes better out in the water, doesn't it?
13:54I think almost anything's better in the water.
13:56I love it out here.
13:58It never gets old.
14:00What's better?
14:01Tell me.
14:02I'll drink to that.
14:06Detectives can't rule out the possibility that Martha might not want to be found, but her
14:11friends and family are determined to keep looking for her.
14:14We formed a search party, and my husband and some friends went out in our boat and searched
14:20the coastline, every inch of the coastline, every island, and we combed every inch of the
14:25willows in the woods and Winter Island.
14:28Any place, thinking that if she'd been thrown overboard or jumped overboard, she was such a
14:33strong swimmer, she would have been able to swim somewhere.
14:37Two more days pass, and still no sign of Martha Brailsford.
14:42By now, news of her disappearance has gripped the town of Salem.
14:47Martha was very popular in the community because she was lovely and friendly, and everyone felt,
14:53whether they knew her intimately or not, they felt a connection to her.
14:58The more that this got publicity, the more people wanted to join and help, which was great.
15:02And we did.
15:03We got help from boaters.
15:04We got help from people who lived along the coast.
15:07We got help from the Coast Guard, the state police.
15:09I mean, everyone was looking for Martha.
15:11Still, five days since Martha was last seen, investigators are no closer to finding her.
15:18Desperate for leads, they asked for help from an unconventional source.
15:23Our captain even went and talked to the official Salem witch to see if she could find out, do
15:28a little hocus pocus.
15:30You sit there.
15:32The police were planning to see if she could, with her psychic abilities, help them narrow the
15:40search.
15:42You have a picture for me, yes?
15:45Yeah.
15:49Salem has a unique history that I think has shaped the personality of the town.
15:54The witchcraft hysteria of 1692 totally transformed the community.
16:00And in the late 1950s, Laurie Cabot settled in Salem and paved the way for modern witches who
16:08still exist by the hundreds, if not thousands.
16:10That's her.
16:13Martha Brailsford.
16:15She's been missing about.
16:17It's okay.
16:18Let's just get started.
16:26I see it.
16:29I'm so cold.
16:33She's in the water.
16:35She's fighting.
16:38He did this.
16:40He did this.
17:02Is it Tom Maimoni?
17:07Who she went sailing with the day she disappeared?
17:11I think that she felt so sorry for him, and he seemed so bereft that her kind nature wouldn't
17:18allow her to just not be kind to him.
17:21She thought the best of everyone, and she thought that people were just as good as she
17:25was.
17:35You know, Martha, since my wife died, I haven't been with anybody here.
17:41You're the first woman I've been with.
17:45What do you mean, been with?
17:48You're the first woman I've touched and been close to and breathed in.
17:53Here we are, together.
17:55It's a good thing.
17:58Tom, I know you've suffered a huge loss, but there's been a misunderstanding.
18:02I'm married happily, and this, we aren't...
18:07Nothing's happening between us, Tom.
18:13It's okay, Martha.
18:15You don't have to play hard to get.
18:16I won't tell if you do.
18:18Stop.
18:32There's been a mistake.
18:33I'm sorry if you thought, but it's not.
18:37We need to go back in.
19:05Tom, is everything okay down here?
19:08Tom?
19:10Everything's fine, Martha.
19:16Everything's fine.
19:26Investigators in Salem, Massachusetts are revisiting Tom Mamone, the man who a witness claims
19:31went sailing with Martha Brailsford on the day she disappeared, which was five days ago.
19:36So far, Tom has denied the witness's account.
19:40When I asked him about Martha, he said to me, last time he saw her was a few days before
19:44that walking the dog, not that he went on a sailboat ride.
19:47He says that he didn't go sailing with her.
19:49He didn't believe anything he said.
19:51He didn't believe anything he said.
19:51I thought he was full of it.
19:53So did Conrad.
19:54He's going to know more than he's telling us.
20:01How can I help you?
20:02Good afternoon, ma'am.
20:03Salem police.
20:04I'm looking for Tom Mamone.
20:06Is he here by any chance?
20:07May I ask what this is about?
20:10I'm sorry, ma'am.
20:11Do you mind if I ask who you are?
20:13I'm Patricia Mamone, Tom's wife.
20:16We found out that Tom was married.
20:18I think his wife, Patty, was a little naive.
20:21She was living in a little bubble of perfect marriage.
20:26Is everything okay?
20:29Detective, how you doing?
20:32Tom.
20:33There you are.
20:35What's this about?
20:36It's okay, honey.
20:37They just want to talk to me about Mrs. Brailsford.
20:40Remember I told you?
20:40The lady that I would see walking on the beach.
20:42You know, the one that's in the papers.
20:44The missing lady.
20:45Just give us a minute, all right?
20:48Thanks, hon.
20:51It's now apparent that going sailing with Martha
20:53isn't the only thing Tom's been lying about.
20:58Tom, your wife, she looks pretty good
21:02for someone who's supposed to be dead.
21:04I know.
21:05I know how this looks.
21:07Tom, why didn't you tell me she was on your boat?
21:11Tom, don't look at the girl.
21:12Look at me.
21:15Okay, well, we did.
21:16We went for a sale.
21:17And I should have told you right away.
21:18I mean, I always try to be straight up with law enforcement.
21:22Believe me, detective.
21:22If you ask anybody, I'm always on law enforcement's side.
21:25But, I mean, how's it look?
21:27Me, a married guy, out on the water with Martha,
21:30a married woman.
21:31I mean, come on.
21:32You're married, right?
21:33You know what it's like?
21:34Well, first of all, the fact that he did admit to her getting on the boat
21:37was step one in the right direction.
21:41Finally, we're getting somewhere.
21:43So you went for a sale?
21:45And then what?
21:46I don't know.
21:47We were out on water an hour, two, two tops.
21:51And Martha wanted to go walk around Winter Island,
21:54so I just dropped her off there and I came back to the marina.
21:57You dropped her off on Winter Island?
21:58Yeah.
21:59That's your story?
22:01It's not a story, detective.
22:03It's the truth.
22:07Winter Island, it's a beautiful, scenic area
22:09that's only connected to land by a small, little roadway.
22:12And a lot of people come and go out of there all day long.
22:15The fact that he went around the corner
22:17and dropped her off on Winter Island,
22:18you know, that's absurd.
22:20She would have walked home.
22:21It's not far away.
22:22She wouldn't be missing if he just dropped her off.
22:25No, no, no.
22:26The police looked there.
22:28Her family and friends looked there.
22:30I guarantee you that probably every inch of that island was scoured.
22:34With each passing day,
22:36Martha's family and friends cling to the hope
22:38that there's some logical explanation for her disappearance.
22:41It was a waiting game.
22:43We were just waiting for news.
22:45And it was agonizing.
22:47It really was agonizing.
22:49The case continues to make front-page news
22:52and suddenly starts generating leads.
22:55Once the story got out of the media,
22:57we started getting phone calls from other women
22:59that had been on Momomoni's boat.
23:05Rosemary?
23:13Sorry for the cloak and dagger,
23:15but, you know, it's a small town.
23:17Didn't want anyone seeing me walking into a police station.
23:20Rosemary Farmer tells the detective
23:22she's taken two sailing trips with Tom Momoni.
23:26The first time was kind of fun.
23:30But the second time,
23:34it was a nightmare.
23:40She was a single woman,
23:42and it was a beautiful day.
23:44And he invited her for a sail.
23:46Beautiful boat,
23:48beautiful harbor,
23:50a couple of glasses of wine,
23:51then boom.
24:08Tom, stop.
24:11Rosemary, I want you.
24:12I don't want you.
24:14Stop!
24:15Stop!
24:17What do you think you came on board for?
24:23It was pure Jekyll and Hyde.
24:26One minute, he's this charming, caring guy.
24:30The next minute, he's attacking me.
24:32I thought he was going to kill me.
24:34If I thought that I could make it,
24:36I would have jumped overboard and swam to shore.
24:40But then he just turned the boat around.
24:44Just brought me back to shore.
24:48Like nothing had happened.
24:51He was back to being nice Tom.
24:56I thought I lost my mind.
24:58Did you ever file a report?
25:00Mention it to anyone?
25:01No.
25:02No, I just wanted to forget about it.
25:06You know, move on.
25:09But then I heard about Martha Brilsford.
25:14I just had to say something.
25:15I just hope that he brought her back.
25:17He just dropped her off somewhere.
25:22To investigators,
25:24it seems more and more likely
25:25that wherever Martha is,
25:27she didn't get there by choice.
25:30Still, Tom did let Rosemary go,
25:33so they can only hope he did the same for Martha.
25:36In the meantime,
25:37the question remains,
25:40where is she?
25:44Tom?
25:45Is everything okay down here?
25:48Tom?
25:51Tom, I said I'd like to get back now.
25:58We're not heading back.
26:00It's just how it is.
26:02Take me back.
26:03Let's go.
26:05Tom!
26:09God, stop!
26:11Turn this boat around now!
26:17I say when this boat goes in.
26:19Me, not you.
26:20Do you understand?
26:45You understand?
26:46Tom!
26:47Tom!
26:4746-year-old sailor Tom Mamona.
26:50Stop!
26:52We know that, in our minds,
26:54Tom took Martha out sailing
26:56and didn't come back with her.
27:03We had no idea at that point where she could be.
27:08All we had to go on was what he was telling us.
27:11So you dropped her off on winter island?
27:13It's the truth.
27:14He's lying.
27:14We know he's lying.
27:16We don't have enough to make an arrest.
27:20There's an old saying, you know,
27:21no body, no crime,
27:22and that fit very true to this situation.
27:25There was a big part of me
27:26that was painfully coming to the realization
27:29that there was a damn good chance
27:31we'd never find Martha.
27:32And boy, that was just a tough pill to swallow.
27:37Then, suddenly, everything changes
27:39when police are called to Marblehead Harbor,
27:42a ten-minute drive from Salem.
27:44There was a lobsterman from Marblehead
27:46by the name of Hooper Goodwin.
27:48This is Goodwin.
27:49Want to take us through what happened?
27:51We, my first mate and me,
27:53we were off Marblehead,
27:55and we were just collecting our traps for the day.
27:58Hooper Goodwin told us that
27:59as he was out pulling his trawls,
28:02and when he looked over
28:04what was attached to the rope,
28:05it wasn't the lobster trap.
28:07It was a leg.
28:10The search for Martha Brailsford
28:12has ended in tragedy.
28:13She just got hooked on the lobsterman's pot
28:17and got pulled up,
28:18and he got the scare of his life.
28:21We pulled the person aboard,
28:23and we came to shore as soon as we could,
28:24and I called you immediately.
28:29Sir, can I go?
28:30I mean, unless there's anything else,
28:32I'd like to call my wife.
28:33If we need anything else,
28:34we'll give you a call.
28:44We were sitting on our porch,
28:46and the Beverly and Salem Harbor Masters' boats
28:49began speeding toward Marblehead,
28:52and then we saw the helicopters,
28:54and we knew.
28:55We knew that that was it.
28:56We knew she was gone.
29:01There really wasn't much left to see of Martha,
29:04besides mostly skeletal remains.
29:11It wasn't until we brought her ashore
29:13and contacted her dentist
29:15that he was able to identify
29:18Martha through her teeth
29:19because she had perfect teeth.
29:21Though her body is unrecognizable,
29:23Martha's remains yield a critical clue.
29:27She had an anchor and a weight belt around her.
29:29This was the Holy Grail.
29:30This was everything, basically.
29:32Tom Maimoni claims his sailing trip with Martha
29:35ended when he dropped her off on Winter Island.
29:38But the anchor and weight belt prove he's a liar.
29:42And that was enough to get the warrant
29:44for Tom Maimoni's arrest for murder.
29:56Suspect is a white male, early 40s,
29:58considered armed and dangerous.
30:14Set him, please!
30:15Set him, please!
30:16Set him, please!
30:20Set him, please!
30:29Hire!
30:43Tom, we hear you up there.
30:46Just show yourself.
30:48When you do it, come out with your hands up.
30:53Tom, last chance!
30:57Please don't shoot me.
31:02Tom Maimoni is nowhere in the house.
31:04Police can only assume he knew they were coming.
31:08We figured he was listening to the Marine radio
31:10and heard them call out that they had the body.
31:14And I think I missed him by about 10 minutes.
31:17With hopes of catching him before he gets too far,
31:20Sergeant Prozunewski presses Tom's wife for information.
31:26Patricia, where's your husband?
31:31You're not going to get in any trouble.
31:33But we need to find him.
31:38Patricia, your husband.
31:40Where is he?
31:42I don't know.
31:45He left.
31:48He left me.
31:51He left everything.
31:52He's just gone.
31:54Do you know if he has any friends?
31:56Somebody you might call in a pinch?
31:57Anybody that would help him?
32:00I don't know.
32:02I don't know what's true anymore.
32:05I know it's hard to hear this,
32:07but Tom is wanted for murder,
32:08and he's missing.
32:10So if you know where he is,
32:12or where he might be going,
32:14now is the time to tell us.
32:18Oh, I can tell you a lot of things.
32:21He's just lying to me our entire marriage.
32:24He wasn't even working anymore.
32:25He was fired months ago.
32:29He lied about that.
32:31He lied about being in the Army.
32:33Told me he had all these degrees.
32:35PhD.
32:37Not true.
32:40He lied about how many times he'd been married.
32:44Clearly, he's been playing me for a fool from the beginning.
32:49Patty Maimone had no clue whatsoever
32:51that he was telling people he was widowed,
32:54that she didn't exist.
32:56Tom had, in fact, been married four times.
33:02His second wife did have cancer.
33:05She also survived.
33:06He had never lost a wife.
33:09All Patty wanted was a wonderful life with a wonderful husband.
33:12She was truly a nice, loving, caring person
33:15who just didn't know Tom.
33:18We need to find him.
33:20So if there's anything that you know...
33:25He didn't say anything.
33:26He just left.
33:29We knew.
33:30We knew what he had done.
33:32We felt like we were so close
33:34to bringing him to justice,
33:36and then he slipped through everyone's fingers.
33:43Two days after Martha's body was found,
33:46we got a call from the Maine State Police.
33:48A caretaker called the state police
33:51because a strange car was parked outside of the cabin next door
33:56that he knew didn't belong there.
33:59Police officer, show me your hands!
34:01Show me your hands!
34:08Listen!
34:08I called it in.
34:10He's over there in that black sedan.
34:13Stay here.
34:24Police officer, show me your hands!
34:27Slowly step out of the car, put your hands in the air.
34:31Do it now!
34:38I'll be right back now!
34:39After two days of searching for suspected killer Tom Maimone,
34:42police have been alerted to a strange car
34:45parked outside a remote cabin in Maine.
34:48Police officer, show me your hands!
34:54Sir!
34:55Slowly step out of the car, put your hands in the air.
34:59Do it now!
35:09Put your hands up now!
35:18Do it now!
35:23Tom's run from the law is finally over.
35:26He'd broken into the cabin just to get some rest
35:29and relief from the heat.
35:30Keep your hands up.
35:31And was just sleeping there.
35:33The Maine State Police arrested him for attempted burglary.
35:36Chance, why on your back?
35:37And when Maine State Police run his name through the system,
35:40they discover attempted burglary
35:42is the least of Tom Maimone's problems.
35:45And then they did a check
35:46and found out he was wanted for murder.
35:49Tom is extradited back to Massachusetts
35:52and formally charged with the murder of Martha Brailsford.
35:59In February of 1993,
36:01the murder trial of Tom Maimone began.
36:05On the stand, Maimone tells the jury
36:08that a rogue wave knocked Martha overboard
36:12and she drowned.
36:13Even though the weather reports were now in evidence
36:16about the conditions, the sea conditions,
36:19how calm it was, how nice it was.
36:21He's talking about what an excellent sailor he was
36:24and how he valiantly tried to save her.
36:27He brought her lifeless body up on the boat
36:30and tried to resuscitate her.
36:32Just another unbelievable young.
36:35Tom's M.O. was very effective.
36:42He seemed safe and accomplished.
36:45The poor widower who had gone through
36:47such an ordeal with his wife
36:49and suddenly he was isolating women on the boat
36:52in a confined space in a way that they had no escape.
36:56We're not going in yet.
36:57It's just how it is, Martha.
36:59Tom, please, take me back.
37:03Tom!
37:06You're on this boat!
37:08Stop!
37:09Turn this boat around now!
37:13I say when this boat goes in.
37:14Me, not you.
37:16Me!
37:16You hear me?
37:18Prosecutors theorized that when Martha rebuffed his advances,
37:22Maimone refused to back down.
37:24Stay away from me.
37:25No, no, I lost my head.
37:26I don't know what I was thinking.
37:27Come on, just let me apologize.
37:29I don't care!
37:30Please, I screwed up.
37:31I made a mistake.
37:32Stay away from me!
37:33Shh!
37:34Sorry.
37:35It's going to be just fine.
37:37It's okay.
37:38Look, Tom, if you take me back right now, I promise,
37:41I won't tell anybody anything.
37:43Martha would have been very upset that she had been duped,
37:47that this was all a big lie to get her out there
37:50to try to maybe take advantage of her.
37:52Okay.
37:54Let me just go to the bathroom.
37:56I think that she probably would have called him out on it.
38:01Okay.
38:03Okay.
38:07She lived in the same neighborhood as him.
38:10She would have probably told her husband, her friends,
38:14and it would have gotten back to his wife.
38:17And Tom Maimoni does not want his secrets revealed to anyone.
38:23I think Tom came to the realization
38:26that if Martha went back on shore,
38:28that his house of cards was about to fall down on him.
38:30And he made a conscious decision at that point
38:34to kill them.
38:56Mide, Mide, Mide, Mide, Mide.
39:07It is dead, Martha.
39:10It is dead, Martha.
39:42It is dead, Martha.
40:07when she was out
40:09he tied the weight belt to her
40:10tied the rope around her with the anchor
40:16his first priority at that point
40:18was to protect his own ego needs
40:21his own house of cards
40:22his marriage
40:23his life and standing
40:25so he weighted her down
40:28and threw her overboard
40:43prosecution maintained to the jury
40:45that most likely Martha died by
40:48drowning after having been thrown in the water
40:52and the irony is that a sailboat looks like the safest place in the world to be with somebody
40:56you might not want to be in a bar
40:58or in an alley
40:59but on a sailboat
41:01you think of the captain of the boat as being protective
41:05you would never dream that it could become a crime scene
41:09what really gave me a nightmare was thinking that the last thing she saw was his face
41:14I'm sure that she just couldn't believe that this was happening
41:18to go out on a beautiful day
41:19to go sailing
41:21and suddenly
41:22have this figure looming over you
41:25I'm sure
41:26she was stunned
41:32Tom Mamone was sentenced to life in prison
41:3536 years in my career
41:37with the Salem Police Department
41:38Tom Mamone is at the top
41:41of the sociopath list
41:43he lied about everything
41:47everything
41:54Tom Mamone took
41:55my sense of
41:58security
41:59and a lot of people's
42:02shook them to their core
42:04when they realized that
42:06these kinds of acts of violence
42:08that one always thinks happen
42:09to other people
42:10can really strike very close to home
42:13I hope on some level that he suffers
42:16I truly do
42:17because he's made a lot of people suffer
