00:01this time on car sos welcome to the 21st century the ultimate 90s roadster is well past its sell
00:09by date have we got a problem with just a little sensor that's stopping this running or has
00:15something more catastrophic happened tim has a bath fuzz works on his gymnastics this is literally
00:22a balancing act and the stage is quite literally set i know this is not what you were expecting
00:27at all it's lovely to meet you to make another deserving owner's automotive dream come true
00:33in three two one
01:00we're in barnesley south yorkshire right i want to make a statement about what we're picking up
01:05today for us yeah because in my mind this this vehicle contains a piece of technology which
01:12makes this one the single most important vehicle we've ever picked up well we've never said what
01:18it is because today we're picking up a mercedes slk yes at first glance it might look just like
01:26another late 90s midlife crisis mobile but tim's right the slk was a genuine game changer thanks
01:33to an ingenious piece of technology its folding metal roof because while most of the european
01:40competition were still fitting fiddly damp and smelly canvas roofs that had barely changed in
01:46almost a century mercedes walked in and rewrote the rulebook stuffing so much tech into their folding
01:53metal roof you half expected it to achieve orbit at the press of a button and in under 30 seconds
02:00this practical hard top runaround could transform into a mullet flapping roadster with enough room in
02:07the boot for the weekly shop and some essential hairspray and the slk wasn't just a pretty face
02:13under the bonnet sat a 2.3 litre supercharged engine with 190 horsepower and 0 to 60 in under
02:21seven seconds just over a quarter of a century on from their release the exterior of this modern
02:27classic may have aged like fine wine but remember under the skin it's still powered by technology
02:33from an era when flip phones dvd players and these two were at their peak so come on who are
02:39we meeting
02:40today so i'm meeting matt today matt is the husband of lily whose car it is yeah okay cool joanne's
02:44going to be there as well who's matt's mom okay cool so lily's mother-in-law
02:58is this where lily lives is lily in she's not does she have neighbors that know her yes do they
03:04know car sos so where can we go to hide into the garage can we see the car absolutely lots
03:09of
03:10questions isn't it come on everyone in shut the door shut the door come on come on shut the door
03:17oh go on then come on you can come as well come on there it is the single most important
03:24car we
03:25have ever taken on since the beginning of all time since the beginning of all things car sos
03:29what's funny about that nothing it's not it's true what do you mean i'm talking about the roof
03:33yeah i know you're talking about the roof talking about the roof i can't see it uh it's down at
03:38the
03:39it's hidden false at the moment it's hidden so so is there a reason for that it's broken it's broken
03:44can i can ask right this car looks like it's been here for a while it does does it does
03:48it run does
03:49it drive no right okay so it doesn't run doesn't drive it's better okay that's it can you and i
03:54right us three go out there chat about lily yeah we'll leave you here with a calm come on let's
04:00go
04:00come on come on so what we got we've got gouges dents rust a dodgy roof and a non-running
04:10engine
04:12i better go and have a look underneath it just to see if there's anything good about it
04:19here we go plastic sills now those are great because they don't rot trouble is though all the
04:26bits that rot are hidden underneath and i'm just having a little look around here i can see well
04:33all the suspension components are starting to go this car is the best part of a quarter of a century
04:40old and with that comes the slippage of time and rot rot aplenty
04:51tell me about lily what's she like she's funny she's a social she's gonna make friends in any room
04:56she makes them she likes up her room she's one of them people that you know they love her
05:01they love her and she's magnetic yeah the little mercedes slk beauty in there
05:08how come there is one of those in the family it's a mum's car it's a dad's car a dad
05:13would
05:13take it everywhere a mom she's mentioned to me before about going out with mum in it roof down
05:17go out for meals look they just to see it sat where it is it's just such a shame there's
05:25so many
05:26memories in it it's been in the family for that long
05:32there's a good reason why manufacturers hadn't come up with convertible hardtops it's because
05:39they're complicated why doesn't it work is it just one little motor is it just a ram is it a
05:46small
05:46thing or is it something far more sinister the interior it does need a good a thorough cleanup
06:00so here's our supercharged engine 2.3 litres so have we got a problem with just a little sensor
06:07that's stopping this running or has something more catastrophic happened within there that we do not
06:16know so why is it off the road what happened to it to put it in that position so 2017
06:23Lily's got
06:26diagnosed with bowel cancer and then pass forward to 2018 she got terminal diagnosis and got given
06:33two weeks to live ultimately it was out of the blue just a shock and she passed away on Mother's
06:40Day
06:43how did that affect Lily significantly I'd only known Faye at that point for probably a year and
06:52I could see the relationship just fantastic so Lily loses her mom she's mega mega close to her mom
06:58yeah and then from cancer and then within three months of that Lily's in the hospital being told she's got
07:08cancer okay sorry all right you're doing great she said come on well you can do it oh if I
07:21die she said
07:28that yeah luckily the early with the early stage we caught it it's cancer but it's treatable you
07:35couldn't write it it's just it's just literally they've literally just got over one thing and then
07:40something else has been thrown at him how old is Lily she's 35 35 that's enough bad luck for anyone
07:47and I'm sure anyone watching this will go that's more than enough please tell me that I'd love to
07:51tell you that but you know that so her dad Bruce he got bowel cancer please don't start talking about
07:59this guy in the past tense as well yeah yeah he sadly passed away so she watched her mother pass
08:08away
08:08she got diagnosed with cancer herself and then she watched her dad pass away as well she she did
08:17I'd like to think we're done now I think we've had enough for one lifetime well let's make damn sure
08:21let's inject some good news let's do something good and hopefully that'll be the start of a spiral
08:26of good things yeah I just want her to to be able to make the memories and have memories with
08:31it that
08:32she's had in the past it's one of the last things they've got she's got of her mum and dad
08:36if not the
08:37only thing so where does she think it's going today she thinks it's going to my best friend's
08:41Liam's and he's he tinkers he's good with his hands and he's good with cars he's good with anything
08:45so the the story is he's going to take it and diagnose it and then myself and him are going
08:49to go
08:50and periodically do some work on it right so here's the deal I'm going to leave but it's
08:55getting done it's happening it will just be the best thing that's happened to her in seven eight
09:01years yes this little SLK is a treasured reminder of Lily's mum and dad so the boys can't afford to
09:13let her down go on put your back into it okay that'll do it but with rust eating away at
09:22the
09:22bodywork a lifeless engine and a fiendishly complicated roof packed with turn-of-the-century
09:28tech they're staring down a monumental challenge so I'm going to do you a deal here right okay listen
09:35what I'll deal with the rest of it I've got the engine I've got mechanical issues underneath it and
09:41rust of course as well so I'll deal with all of that you deal with the roof I've over loads
09:48of
09:48convertibles yeah this is the first iteration of the most complicated one of all I have no
09:52experience fixing these things not yet I think it's very important that you get your head around
09:57this because this is one of the most major advances in car design ever the boys have got their hands
10:09on the ultimate turn-of-the-century grown-ups toy a Mercedes SLK I can't believe that we're doing one
10:18of these cars surely they're new no no we're just really old yes on top it might not look it
10:25but this
10:26little beauty is almost a quarter of a century old right come on however underneath it's aged about
10:33as well as these two wow oh and let's have a quick look at the front of here at the
10:39moving components
10:40oh the suspension the springs the calipers everything is absolutely not just surface rust it's actually
10:45deep ground in horrible rock yes it might not look too bad at first glance but there's a couple of
10:53real whoppers standing between the boys and Lily's beloved car being back on the road first up the
11:00engine issue the SLK's power plant was cutting edge at the turn of the century but so were downloadable
11:06ringtones and look how well they've aged so is this the return of the millennium bug or a good old
11:11-fashioned
11:12nuts and bolts problem under the bonnet then there's the folding roof Tim's so adamant about its importance
11:19to the world of automotive engineering that fuzz is leaving him to it so will it just need a software
11:26update or is something more sinister at play finally the suspension currently the SLK springs and shocks
11:34are groaning louder than fuzz's knees after a long day in the workshop so it's going to need some brand
11:41new kit on all four corners and if they do manage to complete all of that it's going to need
11:46a full
11:47respray and original deep black paint to cap it off but before the team can get to work on that
11:53rotten bodywork fuzz needs to work out why the engine's currently refusing to boot up we know
11:59it's an on-runner but why I think we need to get some electronic assistance on this and since he
12:07thinks
12:07bluetooth is something that requires a trip to the dentist he's called in some tech support welcome to
12:14the 21st century and here to help us we have John who has brought in some specialist equipment so
12:20that we can try and diagnose whether we have an electrical fault that's preventing the engine from
12:27working so where are we at with it right now well first hunch will be this unit here okay so
12:33what's
12:34that in there there's five relays inside of here so the relays are like a remote switch so rather than
12:39having power going all the way through your switches in the dashboard you just get the major power going
12:45through those and they switch on and off when needed yeah okay cool so what can we do to check
12:51that out we can plug it back in and we can physically hold the relays over okay and see if
12:57we get any comms
12:58hey maybe we're going to get an almost instant winner out of this problem solved happy days after all
13:05these years you think he'd know better so John's going to bypass the modules automatic relays by
13:12manually flipping the switches one by one hopefully bringing the car systems back to life right what
13:18do we go I think this one will be the horn yeah yes okay this will be I think the
13:25fuel pump yeah
13:26well something struck up there we've got some comms of the engine ECU now but still nothing with the
13:32transmission and nothing with the ABS so John's going to replace the 40 module with a new one but will
13:39it do the job all right let's see uh let's see how we go give it a try I don't
13:48know all that much
13:50we're here we've got a runner problem solved happy days so while fast comes to terms with the fact a
14:00computer just did most of his job Jim's off having a smashing time as he demonstrates the history behind
14:11how Mercedes created their game-changing metal roof look at it using nothing more than an old scrapper
14:18he's found in the yard some power tools and more than likely the first aid kit right the late 1800s
14:26and early cars were basically just open carriages there was no roof there was no covering at all the
14:31horse had gone and they had an engine but there was a problem everyone got soaked so skip forward
14:40about another 10 years and they brought out this so to stop everyone getting wet they basically just
14:46slapped a massive pram top on top of the car and before you know it you had kind of the
14:51first convertible
14:53but the thing about this car is that it didn't offer any sort of safety protection at all so the
15:00next
15:00thing they did was this well something that looked a little bit like this called the louder let which
15:06was popular in the early to mid 20th century the idea was we're beginning to see metal creeping over the
15:11head of the passengers in this car but those in the back well if they were the VIPs they could
15:16enjoy
15:16either the sun with the hood down or have the hood up if it's raining but the problem with this
15:22thing
15:22was it actually it wasn't structurally sound they were kind of dangerous by the mid-1930s it was
15:30the French who took a crack at the folding hardtop problem and typically they did it rather stylishly
15:40the Peugeot Eclipse a work of art the world's first retractable hardtop roof very similar to what I've
15:49done to this one and I'll show you how it worked now their one was powered you could press a
15:53button
15:53this one's not quite the same I haven't had time but similar operation opening up the boot to create
15:59space to put the roof in like that there we are and then the roof folds back like this
16:13like that and then the whole lot fits neatly into the boot like that yeah exactly like that Tim now
16:25the
16:25thing is the technology was incredible but the problem was people didn't want to buy them they
16:30were overpriced they were complicated to use and they only sold a handful but what it had said to
16:35the world is there is a need for a retractable metal hardtop convertible so while Tim attempts to
16:42replicate decades of precision engineering with little more than guesswork and gaffer tape Fuzz has
16:49discovered John's high-tech solution might have revealed an old-fashioned problem that's more up his
16:54street I can hear a little bit of bagginess at the front there I'm wondering whether that is the
17:01timing chain the timing chain is a bit like the chain on a bike but instead of turning pedals into
17:07wheel movement it keeps the engines valves and pistons perfectly in sync as I turned the crank as you can
17:17see the tool is dropping down and if I keep going around that should start rising again as the piston
17:26goes up the bores and that sound that Fuzz heard could be that there's some slack developing in the
17:33chain and if that's left unchecked it could jump a tooth on the sprocket leading to a catastrophic engine
17:40failure so I'm now releasing the tension on the chain by undoing this and once I take it out the
17:47chain should be nice and slack now I've got to be very careful that I do not drop these bolts
17:56down
17:57inside because if I do then I have to remove all of the front of the engine and the sump
18:02one false move
18:04and it all goes horribly wrong right I'm going to use this chain link splitter now the idea is that
18:16this
18:17pin pushes the link pin out and through there we go one of the link pins out right there we
18:31go and what
18:33I'm going to do is I'm going to draw the new chain through using the old chain as I turn
18:38the crankshaft
18:40yes with a little glamorous assistance from Darrell the two chains could be joined together and then
18:46gently fed around the crankshaft now have you sure you got the tension on that yeah until Fuzz has both
18:54ends of the new one in his mitts okay so we are now winding it through
19:08thanks Darrell I can do it from now cheers mate so that's our chain together now so what I need
19:15to do
19:15is reassemble everything and then well then we've got to see if it runs and that should be one major
19:23step closer to Lily's car being back on the road now all it needs is a roof and let's hope
19:29he's not
19:30planning on fitting that one in 1996 Mercedes finally worked out the way of storing the equivalent of all
19:40that metal in the boot of the car and although other manufacturers had pulled that off before it
19:47was the boffins at Mercedes who turned it into the must-have automotive accessory what's a nut to crack
19:54and if you doubt me well the list of manufacturers that once Mercedes had done it decided to copy were
20:01Peugeot Lexus VW Mazda Ferrari McLaren Vauxhall Porsche Chevy Daihatsu and the list goes on that's how
20:10stonking it was that's the potted history behind it the trouble is that's brought him no closer to
20:16working out what's stopping Lily's from moving it's that down there if we just can get a signal to
20:23that that hydraulic pump there will send the fluids to operate the roof but before it says yes you can
20:30operate the roof there's like this long handshake going down of every little sensor every micro
20:35switch everything saying yes I'm good I'm good I'm good yes I'm good we'll operate the roof and until
20:41he identifies which one's the problem the roof is staying put I thought it was you right I need the
20:53roof to be working today okay this has got to go into the paint shop I'm done deep in the
20:58zone at the
20:58moment I know kind of know how this thing works I'm sorry it's not going to be working by the
21:02end
21:02of the day well because we cannot paint the roof now that's going to dictate how we're going to have
21:08to put this car back together Tim and Fuzz have taken on this 2001 Mercedes SLK 230 a little roadster
21:19with some big memories attached it's owned by 35-year-old Lily who inherited the car from her
21:28parents Faye and Bruce after they both tragically passed away from cancer and if that wasn't
21:35heartbreaking enough Lily's been diagnosed with the disease herself meaning she's been unable to
21:41maintain her beloved sports car which has spent more than a year locked away in the garage with a
21:47number of serious faults I just want her to be able to make the memories and have memories with
21:53it that she's had in the past since getting their hands on it the boys have been on a mission
21:59to
21:59make that dream a reality with some technical assistance fuzz has tracked down and fixed the
22:05electrical gremlin that was stopping the engine from firing up by fitting a replacement module and he's
22:13also stuck on a brand new timing chain to ensure things run smoothly well into the future elsewhere
22:19the tired seats and interior have gone off to the specialist trimmers for a deep clean repair and repaint
22:27the rotten wheel arches are being cut out and rebuilt but it's not all good news Tim's stumped by
22:34the high-tech roof and there's the matter of replacing the rusty suspension components
22:39so the paint job's on hold right now Lily believes her car's been sorted by a family friend but that
22:47excuse won't wash forever and to pile on the pressure Matt and Joanne have arrived to inspect progress or lack
22:55of
22:57here it is oh dear oh my god it actually looks worse than it did you're never going to get
23:02finished
23:03it's half a car we're really close aren't we to potential reveal day and this just looks like a wreck
23:12we have done work we've done it work on the electronic side of things uh but also on the engine
23:18but the one
23:18thing that's letting the side down at the moment is progress on the roof Tim has only one job and
23:26that
23:26is the roof this is progress yeah that is stagnation we're going to get the car done leave that to
23:35us
23:35can we talk about Lily yes so we need something big to give her the car back what do you
23:41guys do in
23:42terms of you know something which she wouldn't be sus of going to but we can bang gigs theatres that
23:50kind of thing would that be a good opportunity to catch absolutely yeah yeah she wouldn't have a clue
23:57so with just five days to go before they plan to hand Lily's car back to her Tim not only
24:04has to find
24:04a West End show willing to play host for the big reveal he's also got to figure out what's gone
24:10wrong
24:10with the roof and there's only one place left that can help crack that mystery you know what
24:17I've been thinking about this one job I've got to do of fixing the roof on Lily's SLK how do
24:22we do it
24:22where do we go how do we make that happen and then it suddenly dawned on me uh what about
24:28here
24:30let's hit it yes one job sure is taking the brat by the burst look at this place it's called
24:38the
24:38cathedral here at mercedes-benz museum but look at that what even is that yeah me and you in one
24:44now
24:45let's do it come on he's jumped on a plane direct to the birthplace of mercedes
24:52that thing would cost you 12 million squid if you wanted to buy that and home of their global
24:58headquarters located in the car cradle of germany oh wow stuttgart that is an absolute treat to see
25:07the year is 1886 and this thing believe it or not is actually the first car like ever and the
25:15top speed
25:15of this thing was 10 miles an hour and you might notice it's missing something yep a roof yes a
25:23bit like
25:23lilies then 1893 this is the ben's victoria people in the back they stay nice and dry wet in the
25:29front
25:29very similar to the multiplier let's hope fountain of slk wisdom tobias walberg tobias yes it's lovely
25:36to meet you has the answers tim so desperately needs i mean it is a wonderful piece of engineering
25:42when the company makes something like this and they think they've got it what sort of testing
25:46procedure is that the rooftop they tested it for 20 000 times they opened and closed it 20 what 20
25:53000 yes and not one car but 30 cars they tested well all there all that in a big line
25:58doing that
25:59exactly and when it was successful the test then the car went into production into the customer and
26:04is that because never until this date has a company managed to make it commercially viable so when you were
26:10going to release it to the world it had to work exactly this is the reason why was it popular
26:15if you
26:15walked into a dealer could you just go and buy one like that what was the deal of course you
26:18can but
26:18you have to wait for two years because the waiting list was so long two years two years exactly in
26:24the
26:25beginning is it fair to say then that this little teeny weeny car is a huge scalable significant yes this
26:32is more than fair to say because it was a milestone in the in the history of mercedes-benz uh
26:36small little
26:37car a great success but before we go to the roof yeah let me show you the boot of the
26:43car the boot the boot
26:44here come on why do you want to show me the boot of the car right so the boot works
26:51and the storage
26:52space yes you got it okay i've got it okay so let's close it and now we open the roof
26:56this is what i've
26:58been waiting for this is where we go from a hard top coupe into a full convertible the windows go
27:04down
27:05hang on stop stop i get why you showed me the boots did you notice that because the boot opened
27:12like a
27:12normal boot hinged here by my elbows but now the roof's going down somehow the engineers have
27:18worked that way for hinging what okay that's impressive it is oh it's a robot it's beautiful
27:29like mercedes-benz ballet mercedes-benz ballet god that is incredible to see and just to check
27:38it still works right can we talk about lily's car the problem that i've got on that roof i have
27:47done
27:47what i can and i've checked what i can but i cannot get it to even start working one small
27:52detail you may
27:54have to check again yeah um it's uh related to the abs anti-lock braking system is for the brakes
28:01right
28:01that's got nothing to do with the roof when the abs sends a signal to the ecu of the roof
28:08it needs a
28:10speed signal that the car is not running faster than five kilometers per hour it gets the speed from
28:16the abs that signal goes through to some ecu somewhere that goes yes we're below five kilometers
28:22per hour allow the roof to go up and down yeah but if that speed is not being sent to
28:27the abs it thinks
28:29whoa we might be doing 100 kilometers per hour do not allow the roof down exactly so the abs what
28:35control module or what i'm confident yes thank god i came to germany you're welcome when was the last
28:40time that you had a strange hug from an englishman sorry come here come here you don't know what this
28:49means to me man seriously yes tim may have made a new special friend and got to the root of
28:55the problem
28:55but now we're just three days before the reveal fathers run out of patience
29:02right nice bus here we're so far behind we need to get this car painted so i've been looking online
29:08and i've found a solution which uses this there's a way of manually raising the roof apparently yes when
29:18your other tool disappears off to germany and lets you down it's time to swap tim for alan alan key
29:26because to get the perfect finish on the paint job everything needs to be sprayed at the same time
29:32all i need to do is undo this here just to release hydraulic pressure
29:40is it going soon yeah okay
29:47ah yes look at that here we go hold on up it goes
29:57there we are well at least now we can get the car painted brilliant but we've still got a non
30:06-functioning
30:06roof but hey that was a useful little tool wasn't it yes unlike his partner in crime
30:15so with the roof now accessible the car can take another big leap forward
30:20by heading off to the sprayers for a fresh paint job leaving fuzz to tackle the final big job
30:27i'm absolutely delighted that we've got our new suspension components because
30:31i want this mercedes to look as good underneath as it's going to look on top so all of the
30:38original
30:38worn out and rust covered components are being replaced but before fuzz dives in it's time for a
30:44quick car sos crash course on how it all works straight from the walking haynes manual himself what we have
30:52on a car is two sorts of weight one is sprung weight now that includes the body shell the seats
31:00the people
31:01inside the car the engine the gearbox everything that is attached directly onto the body shelf all
31:09bouncing on this spring but then everything that is below the spring is not sprung the wheels the brakes
31:18the tires all of that it's unsprung and that unsprung weight is trouble because when the car hits a bump
31:27all
31:27that mass bounces around which can make the tire momentarily lose grip on the road definitely not what
31:34you want on your sporty little mercedes now there are components that help the unsprung weight stay in
31:41contact with the road so it doesn't bounce around uncontrollably now the main component there
31:48is the shock absorber without the shock absorber inside the car very quickly you might start going
31:57a bit green it will be like a boat on choppy water so now there's our shock absorber helping to
32:06control
32:06the unsprung weight at the bottom keeping it in contact via the tire and the wheel with the road above
32:14us our spring is holding the body and the engine all those components and others inside the car and
32:23giving us a nice smooth ride and without all of these components working in unison things could get
32:39pretty hairy and exciting on the road so now well may as well attach these onto the car car of
32:48built it
32:53the international fully mercedes-brained playboy returns come on then jet set right what you found
32:59out the abs so the abs does the job of sticking the brakes on to stop it sliding right stop
33:05it skidding
33:06but it has another job to sense speed yeah and if the car thinks because that's broken the abs control
33:11module is broken it will prevent the roof from going down okay fantastic right so it's the module you
33:17reckon it's the module i reckon it's the module where is it here come on then it's landed where here
33:22the
33:23modules here a replacement module is here right well nothing has arrived here i can tell you nothing
33:27has arrived here i've been working around here all day so we are still in the same position you had
33:33one job you've been all that way all that way and you've come back without it
33:39but there's a bigger problem on the horizon tim's lined up a very special west end show to surprise lily
33:45at but the tickets she's been sent are for tomorrow so while he crosses his fingers the missing module
33:52arrives in time the rear axle is ready to be raised back into position oh this is literally a balancing
34:01act
34:06right okay we are roughly in position so what we will do now is drop down these arms insert the
34:17rear springs
34:18and start actually doing the final fixing of this rear axle assembly and while tim's killing time waiting
34:27for the replacement module fast has decided to keep him busy with refitting the interior have a look at
34:33these so these have been massively refurbished for me the color the smell the texture of a car is all
34:41nostalgia and i really hope that when lily sits in it she's she's taken back to some good memories
34:53that's the first piece to go right
34:58we're just fitting the center console to the car here and i want to show you something the button
35:03to operate the roof and look what it is it's a mini hardtop i mean it just rubs salt into
35:08this wound even
35:09more yes with the team frantically reassembling every nut and bolt time is running out for tim's missing
35:16module to arrive yeah hi i've got a parcel that um was supposed to be delivered today by midday
35:23right let me put it this way i absolutely have to get my hands on that today
35:29honestly this is catastrophic for us
35:38it's at the hub the hub the hub okay could you go there no it's in the hub in their
35:44system somewhere
35:44and i can pay to get it re-delivered possibly to get it re-delivered possibly to a different
35:50location tomorrow where to the theater the theater so hold on that means that we are going to give lily
36:02her car back and there might be a chance that the hood is stuck down so while the team burn
36:08the midnight
36:09oil doing what they can to get lily's car ready for its west end debut come tomorrow it might be
36:15curtains
36:16for tim this is the first time in our history that this has ever been so close to the wire
36:26it's taken a whopping 700 hours of fault finding grinding repairing and renovating
36:34and still the roof's not fixed you had one job you had one job do you know what you had
36:43one job
36:44yes and he's not even managed that because reveal day is upon us and the missing abs module is still
36:51missing i've been waiting for this for weeks but in true west end fashion the show must go on
37:00so while the boys cross their fingers the courier arrives in time they're into rehearsal for the big
37:07reveal it's the delorean it is the stage at the adelphi here for back to the future lily is coming
37:13down here with matt yes there's a matinee today she's going to be sitting down there she's won a
37:17backstage tour or so she thinks brilliant right at the end no she's not getting the backstage tour
37:23she's being led up onto the stage where you and i come out here and car sos that is absolutely
37:30fantastic
37:32so completely unaware of what's about to happen lily's arrived at the theater ready for the show
37:39and outside great scott the missing flux capacitor has arrived tell me if you've got a parcel for us
37:47i've got a possible mr sure yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
37:53you're a legend thank you very much take it easy thank you man
37:58the question is will it actually do the job i hope you'll forgive me but i cannot bear to watch
38:04on this
38:05because i feel just my gaze at it will break it the show's reached its big finale so it's now
38:13or never
38:17please please move
38:22it's not gonna do it
38:30hallelujah yes yes mate if you think i'm giving you a high five now you've got something else
38:39we've got a car to get back to it with the car finally complete it's over to star of the

38:50well ladies and gentlemen we need to now have you at a good time
38:56i have a confession i am not really doc brown
39:01i'm not in america so there you go um but the reason i've come out of character is because we
39:06have
39:06a very important announcement because you see backstage right now are two people that think
39:12they have won a competition to have a backstage tour but they haven't they have no idea that i'm going
39:21to welcome them onto stage now they're called lily and matt where are they lily and matt
39:34so lily um you're probably thinking why why are we on stage now well i'm two people that will
39:41explain why this problem fails there they are hey how are you doing so we got a mic hello hello

40:59are you ready yeah can we have a three two one in three two one
41:15okay you might recognize these guys
41:22when lily last saw her treasured slk it had been consigned to the garage as a rusting non-runner
41:29with a roof that simply wouldn't budge from the boot but with a sprinkler car sos magic the boys have
41:37bought it back to the future outside the rotting wheel arches have been rebuilt the body resprayed
41:44and just in the nick of time the robot roof bought back online inside every inch of the interior has
41:52been cleaned repaired and repainted to factory fresh standard and under the bonnet the engine
41:58fault is a thing of the past so it's ready to hit the open road and create a whole new
42:04set of memories
42:07what's your first memory of this car lily my favorite memory is something so silly
42:12we went uh shopping a couple of weeks after mum got it yeah and um we i saw our reflection
42:20yeah in the
42:22like super market and i was like we look so cool and that's seared into your mind you can see
42:29that
42:29yeah so what does it feel like to sit in this car now you're in the driver's seat this is
42:33your car
42:34it's road ready okay that face says it all that's brilliant you don't need any words to go with that
42:41we've hung on to it for so long and i was just really worried when matt told me that liam
42:47was
42:47gonna fix it okay that by the end of it it would be like we can't do anything and i
42:52would have been
42:52really sad to see it go so this is everything really it's like i'm gonna start crying again
42:59it represents my family and the new family i've got as well now and how yeah it was broken but
43:09it
43:09can be fixed like me and my cancer this is about a new chapter now and i actually scrapped the
43:14chapter

43:21give you
43:21keys thank you that you've been car sos thank you absolutely deserve it
43:30i never thought that we would get this car driving again it literally looks like how it
43:35looked when mum brought it home yeah and in all of my wildest dreams that's exactly how i wanted to
43:41look
43:42what do you think she'd think if she saw it well she'd ask for it back immediately
43:50why don't we test it let's see if we can get to 88 miles an hour shall we
