00:01Good morning.
00:02Just another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:05Erin, we gotta go, babe.
00:06Go fix some old sad houses.
00:09Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:15Good morning, Katie.
00:16Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:19There's so much opportunity, so many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is gonna go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the fat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31No way.
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:39Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:42Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that
00:46you're gonna see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel,
00:56Mississippi.
01:06Good morning.
01:08Good morning.
01:09So Joe and Brian are moving to Mississippi from California,
01:13and they have been best friends since they were 11 years old.
01:16Joe.
01:17Pleasure.
01:17Brian.
01:18Ben.
01:19Good to meet y'all.
01:20They're like brothers.
01:21Brian and I, we met each other back in the sixth grade.
01:25We grew up in a small town called Temple City.
01:27Had a population of about 18,000 people, which is about the same population as Laurel.
01:33Temple City has changed now.
01:34It's over 40,000 people.
01:36There's no friendliness.
01:38Nobody's just smiling and saying good morning.
01:40Every single person we've passed since we've been here in Laurel,
01:43they're still smiling and saying good morning.
01:46Laurel is just less expensive, and you can buy a beautiful home for a fraction of what it would cost
01:51in California.
01:52The way I understand it is it's going to be you, Brian, and your mom.
01:56My mom.
01:57Yeah.
01:57My mom has been a fan of the show ever since its inception.
02:01Being able to move to Laurel allows me to have extra money to retire mom
02:07and to hire the professional help that I'm going to need.
02:10But if the house doesn't work for Joe...
02:13It doesn't work for anybody.
02:14Then it can't work.
02:14Yeah.
02:14I got to have the accessibility.
02:16I got to have the access for the wheelchair and everything.
02:18He reached out to us to say, before I think about buying this house,
02:22could you please go look at it and see if you think it's a viable house for me?
02:26Y'all have not seen this house.
02:28No.
02:29No.
02:29Only online and in pictures.
02:32Looking at it online for a couple of years, actually.
02:35Wow.
02:36And now it's come down to $350.
02:38Makes it now in my price range.
02:41Any house I move into is going to need modifications.
02:44And so my all-in budget was about $5, $550.
02:47This is the McNeil house.
02:50Four bedrooms, four baths, 5,600 square feet.
02:54Currently at $350,000, like you said.
02:56He said that this house in his neighborhood would be a $2 to $2.5 million home.
03:03And here it's $350.
03:04It really is made for your situation where you want to have three adult people who want their own separate
03:11spaces.
03:11One wing for Joe.
03:13One wing for your mom.
03:15Downstairs for Brian.
03:16The basement.
03:17It could be a huge apartment, like a whole house down there.
03:20Since mom's older, I'm in a wheelchair.
03:22It's nice to have that comfort of Brian to be able to move in with us and be there.
03:26You're wanting to spend $200,000 on phase one, correct?
03:29Yes.
03:29If Ben and Aaron are able to show me that this house will work, and when I'm able to sell
03:34my house in California after I move here, I could do phase two and fix up the other parts of
03:41the house.
03:42Do you like the color it is now?
03:43Do you wish it were different?
03:44The white kind of goes.
03:45The brick, it's very classic.
03:47It's very Southern with the shutters.
03:48It's gorgeous.
03:49Well, I have a painting to show you, but it's basically the same.
03:53Oh, nice.
03:54Maybe this dark color around the door and the white door is a little strange.
03:57I would kind of invert that.
03:58We could paint the shutters a new color, just freshen up the landscape in a little bit.
04:02Out here, $10,000, literally just freshening everything up.
04:07The house does need some HVAC work and some electrical work, so another 20 grand before we ever go in
04:12the door.
04:13Yeah.
04:13Okay.
04:13Let's go see the inside.
04:15All right.
04:15It's juicy.
04:16Never done any job like this before.
04:18We've never had a project where our homeowner needed wheelchair access.
04:22When I was 15 years old, we're on my bicycle, he's on his.
04:26The quick release on the 10-speed on the front tire wasn't tight enough.
04:30I flipped right over the front end of the handlebars, landed on my head.
04:35I became paralyzed at that point at 15 years of age.
04:41That's when you know who your friends are.
04:43I don't know what would have become of me without Joe as my best friend.
04:49Brian took me in the wheelchair, and we walked everywhere together.
04:54We'd walk to the mall.
04:55We'd walk to our role-playing game with our buddies that we like to do.
04:59We're unbeatable together.
05:02What do you think?
05:04It's certainly a green.
05:05It's big.
05:06I like it.
05:06It's like a very grand entrance in a house.
05:08Yeah, it is.
05:09And the brick floors are amazing.
05:11Love it because I don't leave a trail behind me easier to clean up with a wheelchair.
05:15This wallpaper doesn't seem very you.
05:19I'm not a big wallpaper kind of person.
05:21So I'm thinking paint.
05:22Paint, definitely.
05:22Some fresh paint.
05:23Some new lighting.
05:24And then here is a beautiful office.
05:27Oh, Moses Joe.
05:29Office space like this would be great.
05:30I'm not sure if I'm going to online teach or look for local schools, something like that.
05:36For me, being in a wheelchair has probably been the best thing that's ever happened to me.
05:40It made me do things that I wouldn't have done otherwise, like going to college.
05:45I was just planning on going into the military.
05:47I became a teacher because of it.
05:50And I've been teaching in Temple City High School for my, this is my 24th year.
05:54And it's been the greatest thing I've ever done.
05:57He wants to keep teaching.
05:59I hope he finds the perfect place to do that here.
06:01Starting with flooring.
06:03Let's talk about that.
06:04Okay.
06:04So we were thinking, get rid of all the carpet.
06:05And then it would be a really high quality laminate flooring.
06:09I'm not a big fan of carpet anyways, because the wheelchair kind of sink in.
06:13It slows you down and everything.
06:14How do y'all feel about paneling?
06:16Because it's having a revival right now, but it's not for everybody.
06:18I like wood, but I don't like paneling.
06:22So for these rooms here, first two, 15 grand.
06:26So right now, we've got a dining room that's sharing this big area with the kitchen.
06:32But I want to know, like, who is loving to cook? Everybody?
06:35Mom is the big cook.
06:37Okay.
06:37Christmas lasagna, people fight over taking that home.
06:40We'll be hanging over at Joe's house.
06:42And Joe's mom, she feeds us.
06:44That's Mary Lou, she's awesome.
06:45After I broke my neck, my mom had to stop working.
06:49She became my caretaker.
06:51She's been my caretaker ever since I've been in a wheelchair.
06:54To be able to give back to my mom, I can give her the world and it's still not enough
06:59for what she's done for me.
07:02For the cabinets and everything, instead of knobs, I like pull handles.
07:07It's easier to get my hand inside and open that.
07:10I like it the same way.
07:11Right?
07:12Aren't they nice?
07:13From what you've told me in your design survey, I feel like your taste is a little bit modern, timeless.
07:17So here's what I'm thinking.
07:20You got all that space there.
07:21That's a dining room.
07:22And on the other side of this wall, that's a dining room too.
07:25That's wild.
07:25That's a lot of dining rooms.
07:27What we think would work best, take out all this cabinetry here that's separating that dining room from the kitchen.
07:33So this all becomes kitchen.
07:35Delete this wall on this side too.
07:37Nice.
07:37And we can build a peninsula here, a new cabinetry that wraps the room.
07:42You would have tons of storage here.
07:44A laminate flooring.
07:45And then that cased opening would shrink a little bit so that you could have double wall ovens on one
07:51side and a refrigerator built in on the other side.
07:54And then under the window would be your sink.
07:57It's nice.
07:58While you're doing dishes, you can look out.
08:00Yeah.
08:00All of this where right now there's a dumbwaiter and a built-in desk.
08:04We would take all of that out.
08:06So you could have your cooktop built in over here with counter space on both sides.
08:10Roll under access for the cooktop and the sink.
08:13That's great.
08:14This would be a $50,000 kitchen.
08:16Okay.
08:17Which is the same price.
08:19Yeah.
08:19We're not talking about doing anything that we don't normally do.
08:24Nothing custom that changes the price here.
08:26What is this thing?
08:27This?
08:28I don't know.
08:28I was just staring at that and thinking, what is that?
08:32Yeah, no.
08:33No way.
08:34It's a mixer.
08:36What?
08:37It reminds me of Star Trek.
08:39He pushes the button, the Yubitron targeting device.
08:42Everybody knows what that is.
08:43Definitely.
08:43100%.
08:44He uses that to attack Klingons or Romulans.
08:47Boom.
08:48Wow.
08:49That's fascinating.
08:50I raised one eyebrow.
08:52We're nerds.
08:54Boldly going where no one's gone before.
08:56Hey, we are boldly going where we've never gone before.
09:00For real.
09:00This is where it gets really, really custom.
09:02But I think it's what would make the house perfect.
09:03This house has-
09:04Nice stairs.
09:05Yeah.
09:05Two huge stairwells.
09:07Okay.
09:08This one is right beside the carport.
09:10Imagine if you come through the kitchen door here-
09:12Forget these stairs.
09:14They're dead to us.
09:15And you would have a big pantry here.
09:18There would be a wall and that would create a gap between that wall and this pantry.
09:24Inside that gap would be an elevator that would open into the dining room and take you down to the
09:28carport.
09:28That would be amazing.
09:30Right?
09:31Oh.
09:31How did you think of that?
09:32The fact that you found this house online-
09:35Is amazing because it really is perfect.
09:37Like there's no other house where you could do that.
09:39It has two staircases.
09:40Let's go to the dining room that you would actually use and you can see where that door would-
09:45Where it's gonna be.
09:45Magically appear.
09:46All right.
09:47Wow.
09:48Big room.
09:48It's a huge dining room.
09:50Yeah.
09:50And this would be the door to the elevator.
09:52Automatic.
09:53You drive in, you unload your groceries, come up, you're right there in the kitchen.
09:57So for these rooms, this space across here, including the lift, another 50 grand.
10:02Most of that goes to the lift.
10:03But it's worth it.
10:04It's what makes the house perfect.
10:05Yeah.
10:06Yeah.
10:06Do you wanna go see your wing of the estate?
10:09Yes.
10:09This way.
10:10Huge living room.
10:12Oh, I love this living room.
10:13Yeah.
10:14Awesome fireplace.
10:15Yep.
10:15Wow.
10:16The double-sided fireplace.
10:17Love fireplaces.
10:19Hey, we're back.
10:20Here's the matching staircase that we talked about.
10:24And then this is Joe's suite.
10:26This room is huge.
10:28Huge.
10:28And here, I think it's just, like, paint, lighting.
10:31The new flooring will, again, change how everything feels.
10:34Mm-hmm.
10:35The bathroom is complicated.
10:37Okay.
10:38Okay.
10:39You see how it's a little bit tricky to see the whole thing?
10:42It'd be a pain for me in the wheelchair to try and maneuver.
10:46There's a pair of sinks in, like, two separate rooms.
10:49It was his and her sinks.
10:50It's like a dressing room.
10:51His and her closets.
10:52But you kinda wanna keep his and her sinks.
10:55So.
10:55Might not be single forever, so.
10:57You never know.
10:58I like it.
10:59I like it.
11:00You're romantic.
11:01Yes.
11:02Yeah.
11:02We were thinking it would make sense to steal this little closet here and make that a vanity.
11:07Uh-huh.
11:08Standard vanity here.
11:09And then a roll-up vanity here.
11:12This wall could go away.
11:14Mm-hmm.
11:14And then this door and this wall would go away.
11:17So this would be open space.
11:19Yeah.
11:19And you could just have a toilet over here.
11:21We would do tile floors.
11:23That access to the closet right now would go away because you would enter from the bedroom
11:27side.
11:27And then it would be clear, open access to what would basically be a wet room.
11:32That end of the bathroom becomes all shower.
11:35You feel like this would work.
11:36It's nice.
11:37It's open.
11:38This room was the only one that I was sort of second guessing if it would work.
11:41The biggest changes are mainly doorways and being able to reach things.
11:47Otherwise, everything else is pretty good.
11:50It's going to be interesting to see how do we make functionality also beautiful.
11:54For this bathroom, this is major surgery.
11:58Tearing out walls, moving plumbing.
12:00The Joe Suite, 55 grand.
12:02Now that's the whole $200,000.
12:04Mm-hmm.
12:05How do you feel?
12:06It's a big investment.
12:11So, you like the house?
12:12You're doing this?
12:12It's a big investment.
12:14But to bring everything up and make it suitable for me, Mom, Brian, it is worth it.
12:21What do you think, Brian?
12:23I love the house.
12:24And the ideas that Erin's got.
12:25Yeah, they're going to put a lift in?
12:27Oh, yeah.
12:28Oh, yeah.
12:28This is awesome.
12:29This is rad.
12:30I'm doing it.
12:31Okay.
12:31This is it.
12:32Fantastic.
12:33And when you sell in California, then maybe you can move on to phase two.
12:37So, we're doing this.
12:38I'm going to buy this house.
12:39You'll be able to beam him up.
12:41Yeah.
12:42First ever elevator in a house.
12:45Oh, my gosh.
12:46What was that?
12:46There was a crazy spider on your neck.
12:48Holy smokes.
12:49It was black and bright green.
12:50Oh, gosh.
12:51Where did it go?
13:03There's going to be a lot of demo in this house.
13:06But I'm bringing the thunder.
13:16I came in like a wrecking ball.
13:18Miley Cyrus in that music video.
13:20That's right.
13:21I should have wore that outfit.
13:23It's effective.
13:32I just want to say that I think this countertop is pretty.
13:35It is very fun.
13:36And I like that towel.
13:38It's okay.
13:39It's not our house.
13:39It's going to be fun.
13:47Okay.
13:47Or you can just be tall and do it that way.
14:13All right, Dijon.
14:15Let's put some mustard on this thing.
14:18Yeah.
14:20I showed up this morning prepared for demo.
14:23The demo was done.
14:25So we started framing in the floor of the pantry and starting the structure for where the elevator shaft will
14:32be.
14:33Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
14:34Yeah.
14:35Yeah.
14:36Y'all did that so fast.
14:38Taking out a stairwell seems really complicated.
14:41Like it's important to holding up something besides people, but I guess it's not.
14:45Just attached to the walls.
14:47Stringers are nailed to the walls.
14:49And so it's like tearing down a wall.
14:50But like one step at a time.
14:52Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:54Literally one step.
14:54Gosh, Dijon.
14:55Just one step.
14:56And that dude, he's a father of two.
14:58You can tell.
14:59Yeah.
14:59The dad jokes just come forth.
15:00He can't stop them.
15:01Yeah, can't slow them down.
15:02This is going to feel as though the house was built this way.
15:05It's like it was made for him.
15:07The way it's so cleanly removed, it looks like it was a dollhouse where you could choose to
15:12just pop in a staircase or an elevator.
15:14Yes.
15:15You choose.
15:15No two-story house in town is like this.
15:18It's so rad.
15:19Once we get everything framed up around the elevator, there's still days of work before
15:23the elevator can actually be installed.
15:25And I don't even know how we do that.
15:27We're going to learn.
15:39Tony and I are prepping the zero-entry shower floor.
15:44And by we, I mean I'm handing him screws.
15:47It's an important job.
15:49Somebody's got to do it.
15:50Hey, hey.
15:50Look at this.
15:51Amazing zero-entry shower.
15:53So this will be bathroom floor, shower floor here.
15:57Yes.
15:57So it's just, he can just roll right in.
16:00No ledge or anything.
16:02Yeah.
16:02What's the radius in here?
16:04Are you talking about the diameter for ADA accessibility in a shower?
16:08Yeah, what is it?
16:09Five feet.
16:09Can you turn around in there?
16:11Oh, you got more than five feet down.
16:13I'm five foot five, so we're good.
16:15Before you see the pretty things, you have to first make it ADA compliant.
16:18And that's like making doorways wider, adding blocking for strength, for pulling up.
16:24So we're getting close.
16:25This is open between here and that wall.
16:27Yes.
16:28We'll have to move all of these pipes.
16:30Everything comes out.
16:31And when it's gone, you'll be able to see.
16:34He said that he wanted to have a standard vanity along with the ADA vanity in case he meets the
16:41one-day Mrs. Antonia.
16:42Got to keep hope alive, right?
16:43Always.
16:44Always.
16:44He's future proof in his house.
16:46When Joe brings his special lady friend to the house, she's going to be impressed by that bathroom.
16:51All these dreams are of you and I see you.
16:54And I'm running circles when you're not with me.
16:58And now all these days I've spent too long alone.
17:02I'm gonna hold you in my arms and never let go.
17:06This is like a totally different house.
17:09Hey, Mr. Gregg.
17:10Mr. Gregg, this is a first for us.
17:13A lot of firsts.
17:15First time to have an elevator in the house.
17:18Whoa, that's scary.
17:19Yeah.
17:20Stop.
17:21When you open that door, it feels like it's trying to pull me in there.
17:24Like there's a demon in there.
17:25A magnet trying to pull you into the elevator shaft.
17:29Down in there.
17:29He's scared of heights.
17:30Not only are we doing a kitchen for someone in a wheelchair, we're doing a kitchen with a lift.
17:36We're doing a kitchen without an island.
17:38That is one of the biggest kitchens we've ever done.
17:40And comfortable for Brian and his mom who will also share this kitchen.
17:45This is the wall where we want the stove top, a cooktop only.
17:50And roll under access for the cooktop and the sink.
17:54And then I would like to have a pullout underneath the microwave.
17:59Okay.
18:00Because he has said when you need to get something hot out of the microwave, he needs something to pull
18:04it onto.
18:05Yep.
18:05Can we do that?
18:06Oh, yeah. That'd be impressive.
18:07Under the microwave.
18:08And then a peninsula here.
18:10We would have chairs on the back side here in the dining room.
18:13I just wish that there was some way that Joe can also eat at the peninsula.
18:21Make him some pocket doors so we can swing and hide the doors and slide up under it.
18:25Yeah.
18:26It would just look like standard storage, normal cabinets.
18:31Right.
18:31But then it's a surprise.
18:32It has a space for him to roll up to eat with his mom, his friend Brian.
18:39Okay.
18:40Anyone who's here.
18:41Okay.
18:41Sounds good to me.
18:53We knew that David was starting floors today, and so Aaron and I took some initiative.
18:57We're removing the old carpet pad.
19:00Please get every bit of it.
19:02It is ruining all my shoes.
19:04It's like bubble gum.
19:06Scrape it hard.
19:08Get it out.
19:09And I'm sick of it.
19:10You want to sit?
19:12I can't get it out.
19:13It's in there forever.
19:14Hang on.
19:17Don't cut apples for the girls with that knife.
19:19Oh, I never do.
19:21Thanks.
19:23Good morning.
19:24Well, good morning.
19:25So we were trying to get you a little bit ahead here.
19:29Well, thank you.
19:29Have you seen this, Florin?
19:30This is very different.
19:32First off, it's crazy thick.
19:34It just sounds different.
19:37It is kind of a cross between the vinyl and the laminate, and this is supposed to be much better.
19:42Well, we chose this because in all of our research, it said this is an excellent choice for wheelchair use,
19:49that it locks together in a more permanent way and it won't slip apart.
19:52I like it.
19:53It's long and wide and will go down quick.
19:56And the bathroom tile is here.
19:57Yes, definitely want to talk about it.
19:59I'm going to keep scraping.
20:01Yes, please.
20:03Look at this.
20:03It's huge.
20:07This is like the most spacious bathroom.
20:11Huge.
20:12Huge.
20:12Wow.
20:12Wide open.
20:13I could live in here.
20:14It's so different than what it was.
20:16It was like divided up into a million little dressing rooms and vanities.
20:19I mean, style-wise, Joe likes things kind of neutral.
20:24Warm colors.
20:26The tile is pretty simple.
20:28Then this is our shower floor.
20:30We really had to pull it out of Joe.
20:35What do you love style-wise?
20:38And he really was kind of like, you know, I don't like any crazy bright color.
20:44That's really kind of all he gave me.
20:46But what this means is, like, I'm just keeping things very neutral.
20:49I got to lay this floor first.
20:51Then get this tile to hit exactly even with it.
20:55For the smoothest transition.
20:57We're learning.
20:57Like, every room has a different challenge that we haven't had to handle before.
21:01And I'm loving learning new things.
21:04You never stop learning.
21:05That's for real.
21:06Yeah.
21:07Mississippi.
21:10What good your scars without a little pain?
21:19Mississippi.
21:20Mississippi.
21:21Mississippi.
21:24Mr. Craig, you only brought me half a chair.
21:27I thought you was building the whole thing.
21:28Well, we only brought half a chair just to whish your appetite.
21:31Today in the Woodshop, we're going to have a real American hero, Mr. Greg Harkins.
21:38Who was the first president you made a rocking chair for?
21:40Jimmy Carter.
21:41How many presidents since then have you made a chair for?
21:44Five more.
21:45Five more? Wow.
21:47He's a famous rocking chair maker and one of the most interesting men I have ever had a conversation with.
21:54I made a chair for Pope John Paul.
21:58Samuel, you made a chair for the Pope?
22:00For the Pope.
22:02Gotcha. Okay.
22:03Every single chair that he builds is a masterpiece.
22:06And so I'm excited to have him in the shop today.
22:08Let me tell you about these people we're making this for.
22:11A gentleman, Mr. Joe Antonio.
22:13Joe had a bicycle accident and he's paralyzed.
22:16And his mom has always been his caretaker.
22:19They bought a great house.
22:20We thought it'd be great to give mom a rocking chair.
22:25And who better to build a rocking chair than Mr. Greg Harkins?
22:29I agree with that.
22:30I knew you would.
22:31Mm-hmm.
22:32What is this?
22:33Bodock.
22:33It's hard, right?
22:34It's densest wood in the state of Mississippi.
22:36What do you do the weaving out of?
22:38That's hickory bark.
22:39Oh, okay.
22:40Well, what all do we have left to do here?
22:42We're going to take and turn the front post.
22:44Okay.
22:44And then go about putting the rest of the chair together.
22:47I want to see how this turns on the lathe.
22:50Okey-doke.
22:52All right.
22:53Next one.
22:57Look at him.
22:57He's doing it backwards.
22:59How am I doing it backwards?
23:01Yeah, let me show you.
23:06We will be in my shop, but he will be in charge.
23:10Lay it down?
23:11Mm-hmm.
23:12Well, now, you could have told me that before I picked it up.
23:14I just want to see if you can pick it up.
23:16All this soft living, you know.
23:17Mm-hmm.
23:19Knock it up.
23:24So we still got to weave it, add the arms, and add the rockers.
23:29I think Joe's mama, and Joe, for that matter,
23:32is going to love having this at the house.
23:34Mm-hmm.
23:40Joe really didn't care about color.
23:42He said, whatever you think.
23:43But we don't have to be cream everywhere just because he likes neutral.
23:47So we've chosen some darker neutrals for around the fireplace
23:50and in the kitchen on the cabinetry.
23:52I really like the countertops we went with here.
23:55They have a lot of movement.
23:57Not the bathroom.
23:58No, the bathroom is a black mist.
24:01Leathered.
24:02Leathered finish.
24:04That one's my favorite.
24:05We put it in our kitchen in the farm.
24:07Oh, I really like these colors together.
24:09Let me see the tile with it.
24:11Yes.
24:13No, it's going to be like a chocolatey warp up the wall.
24:17I think it'll be really pretty.
24:19It is neutral.
24:21Masculine.
24:21You could say it.
24:22It's masculine.
24:23It's going to be two dudes living here with mom.
24:27I like having it down low.
24:29It's just a built-in dinner table.
24:30Mm-hmm.
24:31It's so cool.
24:32It's a big kitchen.
24:33It's like a commercial kitchen.
24:35It's so big.
24:36You could run it.
24:37Make whatever they want to make in here.
24:38Frozen pizza?
24:39Real pizza?
24:41Beef burger...
24:42Beef burger and yon?
24:43Beef burger and yon?
24:45Beef Wellington?
24:46Beef Wellington?
24:47There we go.
24:47That's the one I wanted.
24:48That's the one.
24:57Knock, knock.
25:00Fightin'.
25:00We have an elevator.
25:02Whoa.
25:04Dang.
25:06Dude!
25:07I didn't know you'd be, like, using the elevator at this point.
25:11This is the frame of the elevator.
25:13It works.
25:13You just went up and down on it.
25:15But it is way smoother than I was expecting.
25:18The older elevators, they had machines and everything was way up top.
25:22This one has an enclosed gearbox with a three-phase, three-horsepower motor.
25:27Like, it's all controlled from what pulls up there?
25:31Well, the controls are in this closet.
25:33When you install the cab, it's all going to be connected to that controller.
25:38And then it'll have an electronic lock right here.
25:41Lock only allows the door to open if the elevator's at that floor level.
25:45Okay.
25:46Wow.
25:46That's awesome.
25:47Fascinating.
25:48Is there anything that we can help you with?
25:50Not really.
25:51Okay.
25:52I mean, we've already done our part, Aaron.
25:53How do we do on the shaft?
25:55So, as far as the shaft goes, this is a very good built shaft, really.
25:59Good.
26:00You hear that?
26:00I probably had to use three or four shims in this whole rail system.
26:03Wow.
26:04And usually, you have to use a whole stack of shims.
26:07Okay.
26:07We have the best team.
26:12The whole point in Joe's moving here is that he needs a house that can be customized to work
26:19for him that he can afford to customize.
26:21And so, we're customizing every square inch that we possibly can for him.
26:25What's up, y'all?
26:26Hello, Ben.
26:27Hey, hey.
26:28How's it working?
26:29All right.
26:30Doing good.
26:30We just fixing to put the rod in.
26:32If you think about it, everything that Joe has access to is probably four feet high.
26:38And so, if you've got a closet that's seven, eight feet up, he can't reach those clothes.
26:43This is Joe's primary bedroom, his primary closet.
26:46He comes in.
26:47He needs a shirt from up here.
26:49He just pulls her down.
26:51It'll be easier when there's clothes hanging on it.
26:53Oh, yeah.
26:55Send it back up.
26:56And now, his closet just tripled in size.
27:00It's awesome.
27:01It's very cool.
27:09How do y'all know Joe?
27:10Kind of became friends around the, I think it was the fifth grade.
27:13Well, that's cool.
27:14So, y'all have known him forever.
27:16Yeah, I got to find some new friends.
27:17This is, talking to Joe's buddies, two buddies he grew up with, Rick and Ed.
27:24After the accident, I got to spend a lot more time with him.
27:27Yeah.
27:28Because gaming was one of the things that he could do.
27:30So, gaming is something that Joe did before the accident, and he was still able to do it after.
27:36Yeah.
27:37I love that.
27:37I want to build a game table that is also a beautiful dinner table.
27:42What we'll do is we'll take the top off.
27:44It'll be four pieces.
27:46You've got this whole world of gaming inside, and two chunky, modern-style pedestals.
27:53Those lifts are going to live inside that.
27:55The inside of the table will raise up so that it's flush with the top.
27:59Lower it, cover it up, ready for dinner.
28:02Joe's kind of a geek at heart, so the fact that it's got some technology in his table, I think,
28:08is going to make him happy.
28:09So, what all games do y'all play?
28:11Lately, it's been Dungeons & Dragons.
28:14That's cool.
28:14So, this is some form of Dungeons & Dragons, right?
28:18Yeah.
28:19All right.
28:19What is this thing?
28:21It's like a lion, unicorn, tyron?
28:24There's a druid, a cleric, a thief, assassin.
28:28As luck would have it, my wizard just arrived.
28:31This is Ronnie.
28:32Look at that beard.
28:33Very wizardy.
28:34Very wizardy.
28:35Ronnie is actually an expert in robotics.
28:37Oh, nice.
28:37I think I would be a troll in this world, right?
28:40Because I'm big.
28:41Because I'm ogre.
28:41Ogre.
28:42Ogre!
28:43God!
28:44Yes!
28:45All right.
28:46The wizard and I got it.
28:47We'll see y'all later.
28:49Ronnie and I, wizard, ogre.
28:52You know, big and strong.
28:54And that's stinky.
29:00We're going to use white oak.
29:01It needs to be durable.
29:02It needs to be heavy because they said that Joe's furniture is all very sturdy, heavy furniture.
29:08And which makes sense because if he was to bump it with his wheelchair or something,
29:11then you're not worrying about breaking a leg on it or anything like that.
29:18Oh, yeah, baby!
29:22What you doing?
29:35Is it ready?
29:37We're almost there.
29:39First ever automatic door.
29:41It's my first ever automatic door.
29:42In a house for sure.
29:43Was it a nightmare or was it okay?
29:45It was a little bit of a nightmare.
29:47Okay.
29:48The instructions are in a foreign language.
29:49But, you know, a great electrician.
29:54Speaks all languages.
29:55So we don't know yet if it's openable?
29:58Not positive yet.
29:59Okay.
30:00Y'all will be the first trial run.
30:02Hey, if it doesn't work, I'm sorry.
30:04Here we go.
30:09So cool.
30:11And then do you click this to close it?
30:13No, ma'am.
30:14Okay.
30:14That actually times that on its own so you don't have to press anything else.
30:18So cool.
30:19I love it.
30:27Joe's family is a unique one where his best friend is more like a brother and his mom
30:33has been a caretaker, but now he wants to give her a vacation.
30:37What I hope is that you don't even think about the function of the house, that you see how
30:42comfortable and beautiful it is, that it's not any different than any other beautiful
30:45home.
30:46But then there are quiet customizations throughout the house that make Joe's life easier and better.
30:52I hope it's going to feel like taking a deep breath finally for his mom, especially, and
30:57for Joe, just that we tried to think of everything.
31:02All right.
31:03Welcome to the Antonio house.
31:06Wow.
31:10Oh, man.
31:11Nice.
31:12That is really nice.
31:13No.
31:13I'm not very different.
31:14No, it's so cleaned up.
31:15Yeah.
31:15It is very cleaned up.
31:17I like the rocking chair, yeah.
31:19So the rocking chair is for your mom.
31:21Yes.
31:21Oh, wow.
31:22This was built by a very famous chairmaker, the famous Greg Harkin.
31:28It's beautiful.
31:29It is.
31:29It's gorgeous.
31:30Mom's going to love it.
31:31You had talked about how this house was for you, but it was more so for your mom,
31:36for her to have a place to relax.
31:39And to do it here in Mississippi with a front porch, you've got to have a rocking chair.
31:43There you go.
31:45So that's her chair.
31:47That's her chair.
31:48Yeah.
31:49Yeah.
31:51Okay, now I can't wait for you to see the inside.
31:53It's amazing.
31:54Yeah.
31:55Let's start at the elevator.
31:56Normally, we would say, let's go through the front door, but-
31:58Let's do it.
31:58I can't wait to see that.
31:59All right.
31:59Yeah.
32:00So you'll be able to just pull down here.
32:02Yep.
32:03Yeah.
32:06Come on in.
32:07There you go.
32:08Okay.
32:09I love that Brian's going to be living down here in the super 70s.
32:12Got to love the 70s.
32:13Is this going to be phase two?
32:15Oh, yeah.
32:15You call us when you need us?
32:17Definitely.
32:17You know what that is?
32:19That's your elevator button.
32:21Oh, okay.
32:22Wow.
32:22Oh, my God.
32:23And then the door works.
32:24You have an elevator in your house, Joe.
32:25Look at that thing.
32:26Not an elevator.
32:27A Joe-evator.
32:28Joe-evator.
32:30Y'all hop in.
32:31Pretty self-explanatory.
32:33Two, one.
32:35Lift off.
32:36Yeah.
32:36All right.
32:37But it won't do anything until this door closes.
32:39That's right.
32:39And the upstairs won't open until the elevator's there.
32:42See you up there.
32:43See you up there.
32:44All right.
32:44Can you push the red button?
32:45That's awesome.
32:47That's very smooth.
32:49It's not jerky or anything like that.
32:52You ready?
32:54All righty.
32:56Oh, my.
32:57Oh, my God.
32:59Wow.
32:59Oh, my God, Joe.
33:01Oh, my God.
33:05Wow.
33:07Wow.
33:07It is huge.
33:08Yeah.
33:09It is a huge space.
33:11Wow.
33:15There's nothing in my way.
33:17Yeah.
33:17No big island.
33:18Like an island.
33:19Yeah.
33:19Yeah.
33:27What do you think, Joe?
33:31It's good, ain't it?
33:39You like the color scheme and all this?
33:41I love the colors.
33:43Just went with mossy greens and woodsy browns that felt like the house is just surrounded by it.
33:48Yeah.
33:49Yeah.
33:49And I wanted it to feel part of the landscape.
33:51I love it.
33:52I love the stonework cooktop.
33:55Love it.
33:56It's great.
33:56I can get under it.
33:57Mm-hmm.
33:58Yeah.
33:59Hope you're ready to cook.
34:00Yeah.
34:01And then sink.
34:03Mm-hmm.
34:03Wow.
34:04Mom always likes the double basin, so.
34:06Yeah.
34:07Yeah.
34:07Check out under the microwave that custom drawer.
34:11Oh, wow.
34:12Yeah.
34:12And this is just a cutting board I put in there.
34:15If you want a different size, I can make that.
34:17But our thought was this one comes out.
34:19It's easier.
34:20Yeah.
34:21Yeah.
34:21To take it out if you have a spill.
34:23This is great because when you microwave something, it comes out, it's hot.
34:26But you can pull it out onto there.
34:28Mm-hmm.
34:29I'm not burning my lap.
34:30Yeah.
34:31We try to think about everything that you had requested and talked about plus some.
34:38Like this.
34:39This is an extra.
34:41A little bonus.
34:42What do we got here?
34:43Oh, wow.
34:43This is great.
34:45But if everybody's having dinner at the Peninsula, then you can too.
34:49Wow.
34:49Yeah.
34:50I fit right under it.
34:51It's great for working space, eating with everybody.
34:55Yeah.
34:55And you don't even know that it's there.
34:57You're in a wheelchair.
34:58Nobody knows.
34:59Well, I want anyone who comes in the house to forget that it has any wheelchair accessibility
35:03because it should just be seamless.
35:05Yeah.
35:06It just flows.
35:07Quietly accessible.
35:08Yeah.
35:09Yeah.
35:09That's really good.
35:10Yeah.
35:11That's exactly what it is.
35:12Originally, there was a wall here.
35:13Mm-hmm.
35:14Uh-huh.
35:14Okay.
35:14So you couldn't see into your dining room.
35:16Yeah.
35:17Let's try out this table.
35:18See how it works.
35:19Oh, I love it.
35:19Oh, love that.
35:21Look at that.
35:21It's nice.
35:23The armrests of the chair don't hit anything.
35:25Mm-hmm.
35:26This one's custom built for you.
35:28And it's a little different than a dinner table.
35:30Yeah.
35:30Okay.
35:31So back on up.
35:32All right.
35:33Let's say that it's game night.
35:35Your buddies are coming over.
35:38Oh.
35:39Oh, wow.
35:39Oh, shut up.
35:41Look at that.
35:42Grab that remote.
35:44Oh.
35:46How does this do?
35:47Oh, I love it.
35:49Whoa.
35:50Isn't that cool?
35:52Feel like a super villain now.
35:54Yeah, exactly.
35:56That's amazing.
35:57It's great.
35:57It's got the felt on it for rolling the dice.
36:00And then it gets time for supper.
36:02You can just lower the table, put the top back on it.
36:06You're welcome.
36:07Thank you so much.
36:07This is amazing.
36:09Okay.
36:09You want to see the den?
36:10The living room?
36:11Go see the foyer?
36:12Yeah.
36:12There's so much more to see.
36:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:13Let's go.
36:14We will follow you.
36:15Wow.
36:16Oh, my gosh.
36:16This was just paint and lighting.
36:18Yeah.
36:18It doesn't look like the same at all.
36:20Looks like a totally different room.
36:21The double-sided fireplace will be so awesome in the water.
36:23I love the fireplace.
36:25Yeah.
36:25Let's go look at it from the other side.
36:26Go see your study.
36:27Yeah.
36:28Okay.
36:28Yeah.
36:28All righty.
36:29Oh, my goodness.
36:32Wow.
36:32Wow.
36:33Can you work remotely from here?
36:35Oh, my gosh.
36:37Oh, I love this.
36:38Oh, wow.
36:40Wow.
36:40Working in here and looking out.
36:42Oh, and I love the shelves.
36:44Look at that.
36:44It was so much brick before.
36:46It's better this way.
36:48Yeah.
36:48Yeah.
36:48Wow.
36:49Since you work remotely and you're online, you always want that background to look good.
36:54Yeah.
36:56Look at that window.
36:58All that light is going to pour in here.
37:00And then the flooring throughout the house.
37:02Yeah.
37:02So the only floor that we kept in the house up here is this brick in the foyer.
37:08Yeah.
37:08And this flooring, it's a new material.
37:12Glued down and it's locked together.
37:14And so we were worried about with other flooring types is that they might try to...
37:18I've had that happen.
37:19As I turn, it would always slide.
37:23We chose it specifically because of wheelchair use.
37:25Yeah.
37:25So that they wouldn't separate.
37:27Let's go see the bedroom.
37:28Yeah.
37:28All right.
37:31But what are we going to do?
37:32There's no doorknob.
37:33Oh, that's so interesting, Ben.
37:35How do I get in?
37:35Almost as if...
37:36There's a handle, but...
37:37We thought of something for that.
37:41Whoa.
37:42Yeah.
37:44Wow.
37:45That's cool.
37:47Wow.
37:48Wow.
37:49Oh, my God.
37:50So strikingly different.
37:51Oh, my God, Joe.
37:53Wow.
37:56We wanted it to be cozy, but all about space and movability.
38:01So you have plenty of room.
38:03It feels huge.
38:05Yes.
38:05It's a huge bedroom.
38:06Yeah.
38:07Easy enough to get in and out of the bed because I have room on the side to get up
38:11next to it.
38:12So a lot of space.
38:14Show them how cool the closet is.
38:16Let's talk about your closet.
38:17No, that would be, Joe.
38:18All right.
38:18It is a big closet, okay?
38:21But it's custom.
38:23Oh, wow.
38:25All right.
38:25We wanted you to have accessibility here.
38:29We were only going to do this one, but we liked it so much, we decided to add another
38:33one here.
38:34That is so slick.
38:35I've never seen those before.
38:36Oh, that's great.
38:37Love it.
38:38So cool.
38:39Got to go see the bathroom.
38:40Yes.
38:41Aaron has been excited about you sitting in the bathroom for weeks.
38:45Oh, man.
38:47Wow.
38:49Holy cow.
38:53You could park a car in here and still take a shower.
38:56Yep.
38:57Isn't that cool?
38:58This is so much more space than last time.
39:01We were all crammed in here up against the wall.
39:03Oh, dear God.
39:04It was so strange and cut up.
39:09Able to get in the shower.
39:13Love it.
39:14We moved that.
39:15Handle.
39:16So that you can turn it on without getting sprayed.
39:18Yeah.
39:19When you're coming in, you can turn it on.
39:21Yeah, you can turn it on ahead of time and everything.
39:24Warm up.
39:26So your mirror is adjustable?
39:28Uh-huh.
39:28Oh, that's perfect.
39:29Oh, that's fantastic.
39:31All the mirrors that I've used, I'm just looking, you know, at it straight across.
39:36But to be able to get the full shot sometimes, you want to make sure that you look good all
39:40the way.
39:41That's right.
39:41Make sure the white tennis shoes look really good with the navy shirt.
39:45They stay white.
39:45I've got to make it match.
39:47This is a kitchen sink faucet with a sprayer.
39:52Oh, that's great.
39:53I'm able to lean forward a little bit, use the sprayer if I was just doing a quick wash.
39:58And I like the high part of the faucet because then I can get under and wash everything.
40:03It's easier.
40:03And the floors are completely waterproofed like a wet room.
40:07There's an extra waterproofed layer under the towel because when you're in a chair, we
40:13learned that it pulls water with you.
40:15Yeah.
40:15So the whole room is ready for like any amount of water.
40:22Okay.
40:22Do you like the house?
40:23Did we get it right?
40:25You guys are amazing.
40:26Wizards.
40:26You got it absolutely right.
40:28Just incredible.
40:29We're wizards.
40:30Wizards.
40:31Wizards.
40:31And we can come back and retrofit the retro area downstairs eventually.
40:36But phase one was?
40:38Five hundred and fifty grand.
40:40It's purchase and renovation all in.
40:43I doubt you could get this much house in Temple City or L.A.
40:47Couldn't even look at a house for that much.
40:49No, no.
40:50I hope it's comfortable for everybody.
40:52That's enough.
40:52It is amazing.
40:53It is.
40:54Mom's really going to love the kitchen in there.
40:56It's great.
40:57It's what she's wanted to get back to a little bit of a quieter, peaceful time.
41:03And I'm...
41:08Yeah.
41:09Yeah.
41:10Really happy to be able to get that for her.
41:13Yeah.
41:14And everything.
41:15I mean, I know the house is set up a lot for me.
41:19But the whole ride, the whole journey is all about Mom.
41:23The house is set up for you so that she can have an easier life.
41:28Exactly.
41:28I know she's going to love it.
41:30And her front porch.
41:31And the rocker.
41:33Even though I can't do it myself.
41:36Well, when y'all are there together, it's rock and roll.
41:38There you go.
41:40Yeah.
41:48Well, what do you think?
41:50I'm overwhelmed.
41:51It's beautiful.
41:52For all of us, the opportunity to get to one day, take care of your parents, is something
42:00that we don't think about.
42:01But as you age, you hope you get there.
42:04For Joe, he's there.
42:06He's accomplishing that.
42:07And that is going to be life-changing for everybody.
42:11Well, good.
42:12I couldn't be happier.
42:15The least I could do for everything you've been doing for me all my life.
42:19You don't owe me anything.
42:22You've been the best son.
42:23So I'm thrilled.
42:26Well, I love you.
42:32I never in a million years thought this perfect, maintained house would give us endless problems.
42:44You're ruining the house!
42:46I don't want to freak you out.
42:48Okay.
42:49We also found termite damage in the kitchen.
42:55It puckered.
42:56At this point, it would be surprising to find anything else.
43:00Are you ready?
43:02Mind blown.
