00:00Yankees ace Garrett Cole is throwing the heat during his rehab.
00:04Can you break down what that tells you in terms of where he is in his rehab and his return?
00:12The question is, with Tommy John's, it's all about getting the ligament to heal and your muscles ready to throw.
00:18So they start a throwing program, typically after a Tommy John surgery, at about four months after.
00:25It's where they start with short toss, build up to long toss, and eventually the last thing is to throw
00:33off the mound.
00:34Typically, the return to play in a major league baseball player after Tommy John is anywhere from 12 to 18
00:42months after the surgery.
00:43So it sounds like he's hitting all his timelines.
00:47Tommy John surgery, is that common amongst non-pro athletes?
00:51And if they do have to get Tommy John, what's their recovery like?
00:55Compared to a Garrett Cole.
00:57The difference between a pro athlete and a collegiate or a high school athlete is that most times they're not
01:05throwing as hard.
01:06So you can get him back quicker, more like the 10-month mark, 11-month mark.
01:12As opposed to the pro athlete who's throwing in the high velocities, putting much more stress on the elbow.
01:18We tend to delay them into the year, 14-month, 16-month time mark.
01:23Because if you miss more than a year at that level, it's harder to get back.
