00:00Labels warning that a product contains chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive
00:05harm are required on many household items in California. The Prop 65 label is on many items,
00:12from furniture to energy drinks, both within the state of California and sometimes beyond state
00:17lines. It is intended to help people make informed decisions about protecting themselves from damaging
00:22chemicals. Is it safe to use these products? HuffPo says most likely yes. It's a warning,
00:28but it doesn't mean the product will harm you. But if you're someone especially susceptible to
00:32reproductive harm or birth defects or cancer, it's best to avoid them. Certain products with this
00:38label, like alcohol and cigarettes, do increase your cancer risk significantly. But things like
00:43weightlifting benches with the warning probably don't, says the HuffPo. When finding a safer option
00:49implies a larger expense, note that there are things you can do to limit your exposure to the
00:54potential harmful chemical. Let a product air out before you start using it and limit the contact
01:00with the item if you are high risk. The Prop 65 label isn't something most people need to worry about
01:06with their daily lives. But manage your exposure and arm yourself with information so you can make
01:12the best decision for you and your family.
