00:00Hi, I'm Tyler West, and this is race champion Alfie Watts.
00:03Welcome to Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:07This is your travel buddy for the show that's got us all reaching for the Factor 50.
00:10Ginger, like, I'm dying here.
00:13And witnessing a medical miracle.
00:14We just want to scratch this itch we've had for the last five years.
00:18And charming the locals with the best compliments.
00:21Your English is very good.
00:22I'm Australian.
00:23Ah, are you?
00:27We are here to explore all things race across the world.
00:31Now you can expect travel tales, travel fails, and all the big questions.
00:34Who's going to get to the checkpoint last?
00:36Who's going to make it to the end?
00:38Who's got the passports again?
00:40Plus, and this is very exciting, this bit, at the end of each show,
00:42I'll be playing you an exclusive clip that you will not see or hear anywhere else.
00:47Okay, come on.
00:48Exactly, it's very exciting.
00:49It'll be a short teaser for what's to come in episode two of Race Across the World.
00:53So today is a very, very good day.
00:55To get you into the race mood, sign your name into the book
00:58and shimmy into that modesty cocoon
01:00and help yourself to a lovely dry sandwich
01:03because you have made it to Race Across the World, the detour.
01:10Right, if you're still in Palermo and haven't quite made it to Foscado yet,
01:13then turn back because there are spoilers ahead there happening right now.
01:17Go and watch the first leg of Race Across the World Series 6 on BBC iPlayer
01:20and we'll be waiting right here for you.
01:22Now that's sorted, let's meet the globetrotters who managed to book direct transport to the detour studio.
01:29This week and every week I will be joined by a resident travel expert.
01:32He's the winner of Series 4 and frankly, a child prodigy.
01:36He's the Mozart of getting on a bus.
01:38He definitely wrote that himself.
01:40It's my younger, smarter little brother.
01:42Alfie Watts in the studio.
01:44Thank you, Tyler.
01:45Mozart?
01:46Listen.
01:46Mozart.
01:47Listen, it's true.
01:49It's not true.
01:50It's definitely not true.
01:51I don't think you can be the Mozart of getting on a bus.
01:52Yeah.
01:53But it's going in my LinkedIn either way.
01:55Fine.
01:55I've got something to say, mate.
01:56You've done the show.
01:57Yeah, we have.
01:58We have.
01:59I know what you're going to say next.
02:00You didn't quite win it.
02:02No.
02:02You were very close.
02:04Yeah, everything looks bigger on TV.
02:05It was just literally a few centimetres in it.
02:07I just have a question.
02:08When you opened that book, how many names were on that page?
02:10There was just two more names on that page.
02:12But we were there.
02:13We were metres away.
02:14It was because of the boat.
02:15It was because of the boat.
02:16It was because of the boat.
02:17Anyway, what I can say is at the end of each episode of The Detour,
02:21I will bring you my optimal route for this week's leg of the race.
02:24Now, it will be the one that gets you there quickly,
02:26but crucially also allows for some eye-catching, unmissable detours.
02:29Clues in the name.
02:30Nice.
02:30And we'll be joined by some unreal guests along the way.
02:33So, who has managed to sign the book this week?
02:36It's actor, singer, celebrity racer,
02:38and I heard she's got a phenomenal fiancé.
02:40It's Molly Rainford.
02:42Come on.
02:43Oh, that was true.
02:44Yeah, yeah, exactly.
02:45An all-round legend, actor, and celebrity racer.
02:48Collar bikinis in the studio.
02:50In a strong leather jacket as well.
02:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:53Very strong leather jacket.
02:54Might regret it.
02:54Might regret it.
02:55Who knows?
02:56So, listen, what a start to the series
02:57and what an end to the episode.
02:59First up, well done to this leg's winners,
03:01siblings Katie and Harrison.
03:04Yes!
03:05Yes!
03:07Yes!
03:08We did it!
03:09Yes, you.
03:09We did it.
03:10Quick, get it down.
03:11Every minute counts.
03:13Very nice.
03:15I don't think I've ever seen someone who's won
03:17write in the book so fast
03:19and then say, write quicker as well.
03:21Like, every single second matters.
03:22Molly, what was it about Katie and Harrison's strategy
03:25that put them in that first place?
03:27Was it saving the one euro 80 on the mayo?
03:30It might have been.
03:30Do you know what?
03:31I feel like with those two, especially Harrison,
03:34he was all for, you know, saving the pennies.
03:37But actually, I thought they had quite an expensive leg,
03:40but they did go with very quick solutions,
03:43which I found, like, the taxi straight off the bat.
03:46They were good with, like, thinking quickly on their feet,
03:48I think.
03:48Yeah.
03:49I mean, it was mad.
03:50The ones that won it, yeah, he was on it from the get-go.
03:52He was, like, even when, before they said go,
03:55I remember, like, me being, me and Mel,
03:57just, like, loafing around and being, like,
03:59oh, it's great size, but forgetting that we're actually
04:01in the race.
04:02He was on it from the get-go.
04:04And he was, like, you've got to walk faster.
04:05And that's when I realised, yeah, yeah, you know what.
04:07They hadn't even started at that point.
04:08They hadn't even started.
04:09There's no prizes for getting to the start line first.
04:11I was, like, I predicted it from the beginning.
04:14I was, like, that guy's winning.
04:15Yeah.
04:16So, I reckon it's probably them, yeah.
04:18Yeah, OK.
04:19Well, look, I mean, Mark, as well,
04:20he's a man that I can relate to
04:21because he's dedicated to his snacks, right?
04:23My man loves eating.
04:25There was one point where he's eating a whole melon
04:27with a teaspoon, and there's, like,
04:28a flash mob going on in front of him.
04:30And he's, like, yeah, don't worry about me.
04:31You're right.
04:32I've got my melon.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Now, Molly Collar, what was, would you say,
04:36some of the most desperate snacks that you've turned to
04:38when you're all out of cash?
04:40Oh, yeah.
04:40Yeah, I remember one day, you know,
04:42in the beginning, we didn't count our money.
04:45So, we probably...
04:46It's not a good start, mate.
04:47Yeah, bro, bro, you know, for God, like,
04:48count your budget, mate.
04:49Yeah, it took us three hours to find where the place was.
04:53Yeah.
04:53You know, and it was, sun was setting,
04:54everyone was gone.
04:55And then we was, like, I'm kind of hungry.
04:57So, at first, we all had steak and rice,
04:59you know what I mean?
04:59Yeah, and then we realised,
05:01we're running out of money here,
05:02so I turned to, one day, 24 hours,
05:04I had a packet of Oreos.
05:05Yeah.
05:06And you had nothing to dip it in, as well.
05:07Nothing.
05:07Because you're beautiful.
05:08You've even got one or the other when you're raised, as well.
05:10Do you never have the milk and biscuits?
05:11You have one or the other.
05:12It is literally that.
05:14Moles, what did you eat?
05:15Well, what didn't we eat, Ty?
05:17To be fair.
05:19I'm not involved.
05:20No, do you know what?
05:21One time we made the error of we walked to a border to save money.
05:27It's a sentence and a half, isn't it?
05:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:29You don't do that walking down the street.
05:30No, this was one of the lowest points of my life.
05:32It was a 10 kilometre walk in the end.
05:34We didn't know that at the time.
05:36Yeah, exactly.
05:37Every cloud.
05:39And to reward ourselves, we bought ourselves a Coca-Cola.
05:43But that actually would have probably been the same amount as the taxi.
05:48I think we finished the show on, like, what, 14 quid miles?
05:50No, I think we had maybe $100.
05:54No way.
05:55Seriously.
05:55No way did we have $100.
05:56All right.
05:57See, my maths was never winning.
05:59We had one peso.
06:01What did you do?
06:03No, to me.
06:03Was you giving it away?
06:04I have no idea how we finished that race.
06:07I was on top of the Andes, like,
06:08Mary, how did we get here?
06:11You finished second, didn't you?
06:13No, no, no.
06:13Yeah.
06:15How bad was everyone else?
06:17No, we've still got a few, like, Belize dollars somewhere.
06:21Like, just as a souvenir.
06:22Just can't redeem them.
06:24Yeah.
06:24But at the moment, it does feel pretty close between them all, Colin.
06:28I mean, it was pretty interesting detours
06:30that were taken throughout this first episode, right?
06:32Joe and Kush made a beeline for work in Sorrento.
06:35Andrew and Molly went kayaking in Maratuya.
06:38Are you surprised it's this close at the minute?
06:40I feel like they've done their homework, innit?
06:43Like, you know, good on them, you know?
06:45Because, you know, I don't really like homework.
06:48But, you know, yeah, I actually am surprised.
06:52Because usually, at first, you'd see one group
06:54that's clearly on it more than another.
06:56But this year, it's going to be close.
06:59Now, I think it's a good moment in the podcast
07:01to get to know our teams a little bit better, right?
07:02And the first pair that we met in this episode
07:04were Scouse lads Joe and Kush.
07:06I think Scousers are the perfect people to travel.
07:09We're not shy to, like, say hello to someone on the street.
07:12They always say,
07:13Oh, babe, see, you're right there, love.
07:16They have a proper little, like,
07:18this little charm about Scouse or anything.
07:20Molly, do you think the, um,
07:22do you think the gift of the gab is going to help them on this course?
07:24I do.
07:25I mean, I love a Scouse accent, but...
07:28Nice.
07:29I do think...
07:30Yeah, sorry about that.
07:30Yeah, cheers.
07:31Anyway, um...
07:33Do you know what an awful way to get dumped, by the way?
07:36Thank you very much.
07:38This early on into the series, great.
07:40Anyway, um, yeah, I know, I do love a Scouse accent,
07:44but I do think that is probably even harder to translate.
07:47No, but I do think they've got, like, the young lad charm.
07:51I feel like, you know, hitchhiking will definitely be way easier for them, too.
07:55100%.
07:56I'm getting that vibe.
07:56Do you think?
07:57Yeah.
07:57I've been there as, like, two 20-year-olds going on this show,
08:01and it feels harder.
08:02Oh.
08:03Because I feel like, I don't know, there's kind of more of, like,
08:06I don't know, like, a more kind of lovey vibe with older people.
08:10True.
08:11Maybe more trust.
08:12Maybe kind of, like, two young lads standing on the side of the street,
08:14like, oh, what do they want, kind of thing.
08:16So I think it can work against them just as much as it can work for them.
08:19They're probably, like, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed right now,
08:21but it's going to get beatin' up.
08:25I know what you mean, lad.
08:27That's it.
08:28That was an attempt.
08:29That was a good attempt.
08:31Babe, babe.
08:32No, I mean, they are the youngest pairs,
08:35some of the youngest contestants we've ever had racing before, right?
08:37Yeah.
08:37Did you ever think about travelling to these sort of places at that age?
08:40Have you more Magaluf?
08:44Less Mongolia, more Magaluf.
08:46Yeah, yeah.
08:46I just didn't think I have the capability to get that far.
08:50Do you know what I mean?
08:50That felt like such a different place,
08:52like a different world altogether,
08:53so I don't think I've really ever thought I'd get that far.
08:57So, Colin, when you were, like, 20,
08:58do you think that you would have ever been able to do race across the world?
09:01Absolutely no chance.
09:03At what point would you have found?
09:0420-year-old Colin, I mean, 30, 30,
09:06I would resign when I'd done the race.
09:0732-year-old Colin, I'd barely manage it.
09:10Let alone for the extra 10 years.
09:12Yeah, yeah.
09:12Do you know what I mean?
09:13I was supposed to get, you know, wiser and whatever.
09:15You know what I mean?
09:15That's all paper.
09:17But, yeah, 20-year-old Colin would have blown the budget and be like,
09:22Mary, come on, that's for a living.
09:24What was everyone saying when we were 20?
09:26YOLO.
09:27YOLO.
09:27Oh, God.
09:28What are the YOLO days?
09:29If I lose the money, it don't matter.
09:30YOLO.
09:31It don't matter.
09:32Yeah, yeah, exactly.
09:34No, but it's all well and good when you start the race,
09:36because you think, oh, you know, I'm in a race, like,
09:39but we've got ages.
09:40We've got, you know, so many countries to get through.
09:42And then they say go, and then competition mode gets it.
09:46One of the funniest things as well that we completely dust over
09:48and none of us ever talk about is at the start line,
09:50everybody just runs in different directions.
09:52There's no need, guys.
09:54No rhyme or reason.
09:55You run and then you go, right, let's sit down here and look at the map.
09:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:59These guys are not running to Mongolia.
10:01It's fine.
10:02It's embarrassing as well, though, when you watch it back and you're like,
10:05look at this guy.
10:06Yeah, like, why are you running?
10:06Where are you running to, bro?
10:08You've got five, eight weeks, bro.
10:10You're going to run there now, yeah?
10:12Maybe it's like if I get my heart rate up, I'll make better decisions.
10:15I don't know.
10:16We also saw siblings Harrison and Katie who made it to Foscado first,
10:20which is really exciting to be first.
10:22I mean, we didn't come first in a leg miles till, like,
10:25what was it?
10:26The second to last one, the penultimate one.
10:27We definitely came first a couple times.
10:30Oh, the foot race don't count.
10:31The foot race absolutely counts.
10:33The foot race was, like, 30 seconds.
10:33Look, the boys, the boys.
10:35Listen to this panel of unexperienced first places.
10:39Do you all I can...
10:40Wow.
10:41Wow.
10:43Look.
10:43Wow.
10:44That might run sometimes.
10:46That's why I'm sat over here.
10:47So she has changes people, do you know what I mean?
10:49Not yet.
10:51See, that's...
10:52Wow, Alfie.
10:52Colin, we heard that Harrison is the planner and Katie's more laid back, right?
10:56Can you relate to this dynamic at all?
10:58Oh, you know what?
11:00So, no.
11:01Okay.
11:01Brilliant.
11:02No, I mean, we've got better.
11:03We've got more savvy.
11:04Yeah.
11:04But they're a bit savvy at the beginning.
11:06Maybe they'll get exhausted.
11:08They will get exhausted.
11:09That for eight weeks.
11:10It's mentally exhausted, isn't it?
11:11It really is.
11:12So I think there needs to be a degree of, like, particularly in maybe, like, you can't
11:16say it for an elimination leg, but if that, you know, in leg two or four where the stakes
11:20are lower, just take it chill because I think it's easier to chase.
11:24Yeah.
11:24I think it's easier to chase.
11:25It's easier to chase because you know when you're an underdog, you're like, oh, I'm a
11:27loser anyway.
11:28Yeah.
11:29I might as well just, you know, lose fast.
11:31Are you a loser?
11:32I 100% agree, though, because especially in our penultimate leg, we were first and I felt
11:39way more pressure being first in that position than I did, like, ever being third place,
11:45last.
11:45You're getting chased out.
11:46But, yeah, you can't get better than first, so there's a lot of pressure.
11:51And you're constantly looking over your shoulder.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Like, always.
11:54Yeah.
11:54It's constantly like, oh, like, we're ahead.
11:56And you have to remember, you have to enjoy the race.
11:58Look at the places that they're going through.
12:00It's unbelievable.
12:01Every time I watch a series, I just get jealous of where they went.
12:03You know what I mean?
12:04And I'm like, oh, I would have loved to have done that route.
12:07I only wanted to do the show for another three weeks.
12:08Honestly.
12:09Once we finished, once you cried our eyes out at the books and, oh, no, we've come
12:12second, we're like, can we do it again?
12:13Yeah.
12:14Can we do it more?
12:14Can we go back?
12:15Is there anywhere else you want to send us?
12:17We also saw Joe and Kush with their competitive side, right?
12:20What did we make of the situation when they were at the ferrier?
12:23See, you're making sound effects already, Alfie.
12:25I've got an unpopular opinion about this.
12:26Oh, go on.
12:27I'd have helped them.
12:28What, Andrew and Molly?
12:29Yeah.
12:29Would you?
12:30You would have helped them?
12:31Leg one, guys.
12:32Doesn't matter.
12:32Good, calm, and get on your side.
12:34Whoa.
12:34Hang on.
12:35Break it down.
12:36Break it down.
12:36You're on your own here, Alf.
12:38What was it, like 10 euros?
12:40They said, swap a tenner for a tenner.
12:42What I'd have done in that situation, by the way, the pound is stronger than the euro,
12:46so I'd have said, give me 20 quid for 20 euros and make yourself five quid.
12:50Done.
12:50Okay.
12:51So you would have ripped them off?
12:53But helped them.
12:54Okay.
12:54Good karma's going to come your way, yeah.
12:56Interested.
12:56You know what?
12:57No.
12:59Because...
13:00You're not having it.
13:00Because in the beginning, sorry, I don't know you.
13:03Yeah.
13:05It's the fairest point.
13:06No, I kind of agreed with how they acted.
13:09I'm very competitive, though, so that's probably why.
13:11I would have maybe.
13:12But, no, I feel like there's a lot at stake, remember, in this race.
13:17You know, there's a big prize and, like, you're so early on.
13:23Every penny counts at that point.
13:24So, you know, especially, like we said, you get stung at the end with something that you got paid for
13:28and you think, oh, no, I've given them 20 quid.
13:31So I feel like they were right.
13:33You know, it's a competition at the end of the day.
13:35Right, now let's take a look at the father-daughter duo, Andrew and Molly.
13:38So Andrew has explained that one of his special skills, and I quote,
13:42is being in a place a second time, I can remember where everything is.
13:47I don't think that's going to work on Race Across the World.
13:50It's not a handy thing to...
13:51He has watched the show before.
13:52Yeah, I know, do you know what I mean?
13:53It's like, right, so let me go there once and I'll remember it when I come back here.
13:55Like, you're not coming back here.
13:56It's so funny because I can relate to him.
13:58I definitely have that skill, but it's void on the race.
14:02Me, when I'm on an all-inclusive holiday,
14:05I know the way to the bar.
14:06I know the way back to the Sun Lounge.
14:08That's where dinner gets served.
14:09Yeah.
14:10That's where the bar is.
14:11Yeah, I got it now.
14:13It's funny, it's funny.
14:15So I'm sure a lot of fathers and daughter duos
14:18would be able to relate to, like, their dynamics and their relationship.
14:21Like, Andrew...
14:22Like, Molly's just Andrew's little girl.
14:24Yeah.
14:25But do you think that that might change throughout the rest of the race?
14:29Or do you reckon it will strengthen it?
14:30I think it might change because,
14:32especially with the little mishap with the map situation...
14:35Yeah, of course.
14:36We'll go on to that.
14:36I feel like he might start trusting her as kind of her own adult
14:41and kind of seeing that she's quite good at making decisions too
14:43and kind of maybe taking a little bit of a back seat when she was there.
14:47It's a big part of the show, isn't it?
14:48Yeah.
14:49Because that relationship can really develop over a period of eight weeks.
14:52You know, Andrew might think that it's like this whole cotton wool kind of situation
14:55and then in eight weeks' time, while she's guiding him through Mongolia,
14:59it's like, wow.
15:00Yeah.
15:01Like, I didn't know my daughter could do this.
15:02And like you said, like, it, you know,
15:04it does take a lot out of you to make all those decisions all the time.
15:08So if he kept going that way, he'd probably burn out.
15:10Yeah.
15:10So it's probably good if he gives her a bit of the load.
15:13Yeah, he needs to give over some responsibility.
15:14Yeah.
15:14Because travelling with a parent must be tough.
15:16Yeah.
15:16Oh, yeah.
15:17Like, I wouldn't want to do that.
15:18I wouldn't want to do that.
15:19Especially, like, adult child and parent.
15:21Yeah.
15:22And your dad's a teacher.
15:23Yeah.
15:24It's the smartest in the room.
15:25It's like double parent.
15:26Yeah, exactly.
15:27Oh, yeah, yeah.
15:28Exactly.
15:30I mean, but they did have the misunderstanding over the map stand.
15:33So let alone when you're then looking at a map stand
15:35and you're not really sure the general navigation of it all,
15:38it's a big stress.
15:39And that was throughout this whole first episode.
15:41You're going to know what the terrain is, though.
15:42Exactly.
15:43No, all right.
15:45On the map.
15:46On the map, he's going to be like,
15:47oh, that's a mountaineer, really.
15:50And she's going to be like,
15:51but dad, does that help us in the race?
15:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:54That line there means it's steeper.
15:55He's going to be like,
15:56do you know this is yourself as well?
15:57Then he goes, oh, I've been here before.
15:59I remember where everything is.
16:00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:01That's it.
16:02But I mean, was there ever a time when you was on the race collar
16:04that, you know, not being able to read a map left you in a sticky situation?
16:08Or like wrong directions?
16:10Oh, that was all the same.
16:12Also, I lost a map.
16:14Joined the club.
16:15Yeah, you did as well.
16:16So you've got something in common.
16:17Yeah, we lost it on day two.
16:18So Mary would draw, like, I don't know what she's doing.
16:21Let's talk about this.
16:22Because we did the same thing.
16:23It doesn't help.
16:24It doesn't help.
16:25Having a map on a piece of paper that you drew isn't a map.
16:28No.
16:28It's a drawing of what you think somewhere looks like.
16:31And it was sneaky as well.
16:32So they would put the checkpoint in a town that's not on the map.
16:36So I was like, come on, guys.
16:37This ain't helping us out, is it?
16:39It's not about you have to read between the lines.
16:41I was like, come on, mate.
16:42Yeah.
16:42I'm not trying to discover myself.
16:43I'm trying to get to the checkpoint.
16:45Yeah.
16:45You know?
16:45Yeah.
16:46Now, our penultimate pairing are cousins Pooja and Roshni.
16:50Now, Pooja prayed to win, whereas Roshni was, like,
16:53praying for her ankles not to break.
16:55I think she thinks she's on Gladiators.
16:57Yeah.
16:57It's not that kind of show.
16:59But Molly, I mean, they're both extremely accomplished.
17:01Yeah, they're smart.
17:02They're driven individuals.
17:03Like, they're on it.
17:04Yeah.
17:05What did you make of their journey throughout the first leg?
17:07They seem like they're getting their feet.
17:10Feel like they're in a good place, finding their feet.
17:12And they've been fed well.
17:13Yeah.
17:14So win-win.
17:14They're steady, aren't they?
17:15They are.
17:15They feel like a very, sort of, steady, safe bet.
17:19Team, yeah.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Yeah, they're taking their time a little bit, but...
17:23A little bit?
17:24No, we don't know.
17:25We're in a race.
17:26Speed teaming over here.
17:27We're in a race.
17:28But they said, right, they both said that they wanted to use the race as a way to reconnect
17:33because they didn't get to spend much time together.
17:35I mean, on the race, you 100% get to spend the most amount of time together.
17:39Yeah, a bit too much, though, isn't it?
17:40Uninterrupted.
17:41Yeah, absolutely.
17:42It's one part I was worried about, really.
17:43Yeah.
17:45That wasn't what you were saying, was it?
17:46No.
17:47Don't need any more time together.
17:49I'm all right.
17:50I mean, this feels like a relatable situation for a lot of people, right, Collar?
17:53Yeah.
17:53To be able to spend more time.
17:55Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:56I think that's the beauty of it, but then it's also, it panics you because you're like,
17:59right, okay, this is 24 hours a day together.
18:01Who's on buses all time?
18:02And then after a while, Mary just stops sitting next to me.
18:08That's giant.
18:09When you watch the show as such a fan at home, it just goes, oh, yeah, they've travelled from
18:13here to here and it's just like a 15-hour bus only that happens in three seconds.
18:16Yeah, we did that 15 hours.
18:17A lot happened on that bus.
18:19Yeah, yeah.
18:19Let me tell you, it really did.
18:21Right, Margot and Mark.
18:23Now, an unbelievable bond between this brother and sister-in-law.
18:27Obviously, they've got a really touching story, but we do have to address the modesty cocoon,
18:32okay?
18:33So, it's just, when this happened, what is happening?
18:36Moles, you had to burn yours, didn't you?
18:37Did I?
18:38After the $5 sex motel that we stayed in.
18:40Oh, yeah.
18:41Guys, to give context, it was...
18:43I think context is really important.
18:45Oh, yeah, let me give context on that.
18:47So, it was like a mattress covered in plastic.
18:49There was like a sticky tissue dispenser above the bed.
18:52That was, yeah.
18:52There was a lot going on and we were like, we are not sleeping in this place,
18:55but we had to sleep in the sleeping bag.
18:57Oh, no, I slept on top of the duvet in the sleeping bag.
19:03Now, we do hear a little bit of these guys' story of how they both looked after Mark's wife
19:09during her terminal illness.
19:11It was so heartwarming and it makes it all that much more sweeter to watch,
19:14like, their relationship grow and their interactions and things like that.
19:17What did we make of their progress in the first leg, Molly?
19:21Um, I feel like these two are slow burners, but I think what I love about their story
19:28is that, obviously, when things get tough, they know how to step up together
19:34and I feel like that's, well, I'm hoping that's what we see.
19:37Would either of you ever do it with an in-law?
19:39Be careful, Molls.
19:44No, I'm joking.
19:45You could never do it with Deb.
19:46Sorry, my mum would drive you and say that, it couldn't happen.
19:49No, I have gone away with my sister-in-law, my brother's partner,
19:54but I feel like she'd blow the budget.
19:56It ruins Christmas as well, doesn't it?
19:58Yeah, it does.
19:59Remember when we lost race across the world?
20:00Yeah, great.
20:01Eat your food.
20:02You'll be awful.
20:03Also, the turkey's dry.
20:10That's heavy.
20:11That's absolutely heavy.
20:13Well, I think it's time to talk about the root,
20:15which was revealed in this first episode,
20:17and it is an epic one.
20:20The finish line.
20:23Hatgal.
20:24On the northern edge of Mongolia.
20:30To get there, teams will traverse more than 12,000 kilometres
20:34via seven checkpoints.
20:37At each stop, their next destination is revealed.
20:41That is crazy so much!
20:43It looks beautiful, it looks unreal,
20:45but first, Alfie, give us the knowledge.
20:47Yeah, I mean, this is one of the most ambitious routes
20:50we've ever seen on Race Across the World.
20:52This will be an incredible journey
20:54from the temperate and familiar Mediterranean in Sicily
20:57to the sparsely populated and far colder Mongolian plateau.
21:00The team's been racing through many different cultures,
21:03climates and landscapes.
21:05How many languages do you think?
21:06Probably like four.
21:07Ten.
21:08Yeah, no chance.
21:09This is like the easy bit.
21:11Yeah.
21:12It took us like six weeks to learn Spanish.
21:14Quanta cuesta, that's all I can say.
21:16Yeah, yeah.
21:16How much?
21:16Yeah.
21:18Local transport is going to get worse.
21:19These buses and these ferries
21:21that they're happy to take in Palermo.
21:22I mean, in Palermo, you've got everything.
21:24You know, you've got a plethora of options
21:25to get off the island.
21:26You've got taxis, you've got trams,
21:28you've got trains.
21:29Mongolia, there's one railway network.
21:31Wow.
21:32So the level of transport is only going to get worse.
21:35So I hope they're ready.
21:37Now, Alfie, we've already seen the benefits
21:39of the helpful stranger in this episode, right?
21:42We love the moment that the young lad was there
21:43and he was phoning round all the hotels in Abu Rebello
21:47to try and get a room for Mark and Margo.
21:49What a guy, yeah?
21:50And Mark didn't seem too bothered about it as well.
21:52They didn't seem to care.
21:53He didn't say...
21:54Very appreciative.
21:54He's poor for fours and his grazis are poor.
21:57Alfie, the language barriers are quite intimidating, right?
22:00Yeah.
22:00So there's kind of a few things that you can do
22:02to kind of mitigate that.
22:04Obviously, the first thing is that
22:05if you aren't on Race Across the World,
22:07then you'll probably have your phone
22:08and Google Translate.
22:09It's probably the easiest way to do that
22:10if you find a helpful local.
22:11But things like hotel concierges,
22:14they kind of know the ins and outs of the local area,
22:17will very often speak English
22:18because they're used to tourism.
22:19So kind of just going into a hotel
22:20and asking the reception desk if they've got any tips
22:22or if they can help you out,
22:23that's probably your safest bet in terms of where to go.
22:26Tourist information centres,
22:27always another safe bet as well,
22:29particularly in cities with lots of tourists.
22:31So in this episode,
22:32we've already seen the pairs travel
22:33into some incredible locations and landmarks,
22:35but even the most stunning of spots have their critics.
22:38So I'm going to read out some genuine one-star reviews
22:41from famous landmarks,
22:42and you basically just have to guess what they're on about.
22:45Does that sound all right?
22:45Yeah.
22:46Okay, right, here we go.
22:47Up first.
22:48It's Stones.
22:49Nothing special.
22:51Overrated.
22:52Oh!
22:53Is it in China?
22:54No.
22:55Okay.
22:56All right.
22:57Don't mug me up there.
22:58Let me give you another clue.
22:58Let me give you another clue.
22:59Right, so it doesn't light up,
23:00looks better in pics.
23:02You go with it, it's just like a building.
23:03Oh, you're on the right lines.
23:05Oh, you actually are on the right lines there.
23:07What?
23:08It's a building.
23:09A building.
23:10Yeah.
23:10Brilliant.
23:11I ain't got a scoop.
23:12Just Stones that don't light up.
23:13Is it Stonehenge?
23:14That's what I thought.
23:15I thought it was Stonehenge.
23:16Stonehenge doesn't light up.
23:17Yeah, so you're going to lock in Stonehenge, yeah?
23:19How big was the queue?
23:20It is.
23:22So you can judge it on.
23:23Yeah, yeah.
23:23Well, look, apparently if you were looking for a light-up disco,
23:26you might be disappointed,
23:27but with over 10 million visitors a year,
23:29it suggests it's still worth a visit.
23:31It's the Coliseum.
23:32Oh.
23:32You two are never going to get that.
23:34Sorry, these were the worst things you were asking.
23:35Oh, come on.
23:36I said, is it a building?
23:37You said the Coliseum?
23:38Yes.
23:38Coliseum is not a building, is it?
23:39No.
23:40It's just Stones, apparently.
23:41Yeah, it is, though.
23:43It is.
23:44It is just Stones.
23:44All right, here's the next one, second clue, right?
23:47Right.
23:47It splashes and splashes.
23:49It spurtles and flows.
23:51It's a one-star review.
23:53Oh.
23:54Oh.
23:54Is it?
23:55It does sound like something from Lord of the Rings.
23:56Is it a waterfall?
23:57Is it a waterfall?
24:00It's as romantic as my oldest pair of smelly socks.
24:04Let down.
24:05Lovely.
24:05Is it in Rome?
24:07I don't know what it's called, but it's a fountain.
24:09You don't know what it is?
24:10Oh.
24:11OK, right, I'm going to lock that in.
24:12We're going to go fountain.
24:13It's the fountain that you're not allowed to sit on anymore.
24:15Yeah, she's bang on there.
24:17Is that bang on?
24:18But you don't know the name of it.
24:19Yeah, you're quizzing me.
24:19I can give you a hard voice.
24:20And I know you don't know either.
24:21I've even got the answers, and I'm going,
24:23you're not allowed to sit on it, swear.
24:24It just begins with a T.
24:25There you go.
24:26Are you cheating?
24:27I'm not cheating.
24:28Molly, when have you ever been to the Trevi Fountain?
24:30I haven't.
24:31Way to give the answer away.
24:33People were playing at home, and you've just given it away.
24:35That is a review of the Trevi Fountain.
24:37I mean, him saying let down as well,
24:38on the end of that one-star review,
24:39he definitely tried to propose to someone there, and it didn't go well.
24:42100%.
24:42I was way off, though.
24:43You was nowhere near.
24:44I was nagger force.
24:46Yeah, that's where I went first, to be fair.
24:48This is not the one.
24:49Right, OK, here's the final one, all right?
24:50Review number three.
24:52Seemed like an old crabby guy rushed his way through it.
24:55One-star.
24:55Is this a place?
24:57Yeah, it's a place.
24:58Where's a crabby guy?
24:59Crabby?
25:01No, I didn't write the review.
25:03What is a crabby guy?
25:04I don't know what.
25:05That's a bit vague for me.
25:07OK, all right.
25:08No, this one will probably help you out.
25:10It's a neck saw should have nap mats to lay on for viewing.
25:15Is it a painting that's on the ceiling?
25:17Is it French?
25:17The painting on the ceiling.
25:19That's what we're locking in on it.
25:19Is it French?
25:20I can't remember what it's called, man.
25:22OK, right, you're locking that in?
25:23Yeah.
25:24The painting on the ceiling?
25:25Yeah, the painting on the ceiling.
25:26Nice.
25:26Yeah, it is the most fancy ceiling since Janan discovered Artex, all right?
25:30It's the Sistine Chapel.
25:31Sistine Chapel, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:33You know what's funny about that?
25:35When I was younger, I thought it was the Sistine Chapel.
25:38Yeah.
25:38The Sistine Chapel.
25:39Yeah, yeah, so I said it to somebody that was Italian and they lost it.
25:42They got me.
25:44In Italy?
25:44Yeah.
25:45Anyway, the moral of the game, trust your own eyes, not just a review.
25:49Now, let's return to this week's episode.
25:51There were some major decisions made in that first leg.
25:54Employment was found, hotel rooms were booked, and money was spent.
25:57Buongiorno, can we get two tickets to Napoli, please?
26:02One hundred and eighty-five.
26:05So, sixty-two fifty each.
26:07Just figured it out, and that's about four percent of our budget, I think, gone.
26:10It's a bit of a tough one to swallow.
26:12And how long is the boat?
26:14Twenty five months.
26:15Thank you so much.
26:16Grazie.
26:16Grazie.
26:17I think 12 hours moving is really good progress.
26:20Now, another big decision, siblings Katie and Harrison,
26:24they've chosen to jump straight into work already.
26:26I mean, they're the fancy CAF outfits on as well, Alfie.
26:30Like, talk us through the choices that you made when you needed to work.
26:33Oh, they looked great, didn't they?
26:35They looked like proper kind of Italian.
26:36Yeah, that's that.
26:37I would have liked to have been the worst.
26:38Waiters, yeah.
26:38Well, interestingly, Owen was kind of always in charge of the jobs on our race,
26:43which is why we ended up in a nightclub in Vietnam.
26:46Brilliant.
26:46Which was really good fun.
26:48That's it.
26:48Not a bad place to be.
26:49No, but I don't think he was very happy with me when I insisted that we booked a 3am bus.
26:54So we went straight from the job onto a bus because I was like,
26:58well, if we're going to do the night's working,
26:59well, then we're going to make the ground afterwards.
27:01And that's just that.
27:03Like a true winner.
27:07But I think working now is genius because, as we've spoken about,
27:11the currency now is at its highest.
27:13So working now, you're going to get paid more,
27:15which means you can pocket more for later.
27:16When you're working kind of in the later countries and the money's less,
27:19it's not going to go as far.
27:21So working now is really important.
27:22Yeah.
27:23Now, let's talk a little bit about home comforts, right?
27:25Paul Harrison, all he wanted was a custard cream, right?
27:28It's just a simple request.
27:29All he wanted on the race was a custard cream and he would have been happy.
27:32Kola, I heard that steak and pancakes are important for you on your holiday.
27:37What does that mean?
27:38Because basically, I have a ritual, like, because I'm very superstitious.
27:42So I believe that, you know, karma and bad luck, you know,
27:45and if I don't do certain things when I enter a country,
27:49then something bad will happen to me.
27:51Do you know what I mean?
27:51I couldn't afford steak and pancakes on the race,
27:53so a lot of bad things happen to me.
27:56You know what I mean?
27:57Alfie, what was the home comfort that you missed so much on the race?
28:00Music, man.
28:02Like, kind of having that, I think we've just,
28:04we're so used to taking it for granted, like, get on the train,
28:06you can play any song you want.
28:07I had this little iPod that I had to download
28:10my uncle's iTunes library from, like, 2008 on to.
28:15Brilliant.
28:15Wow, that's so far away.
28:16What a classic choice.
28:18I was five.
28:19What the hell was going on?
28:21Well, I just had a grey hair pop out of his chin.
28:232008, oh, man, that ancient, that time capsule.
28:26That was a decent era of music, I feel.
28:28I literally, I left school.
28:30That's okay to school in 2008.
28:31Decent era of music, unless you're my uncle.
28:33Yeah, fair.
28:34In which case, what I had to listen to was just virtually unbearable.
28:38Fine.
28:38So I think that was the one thing that I missed massively,
28:40especially on those long journeys, man.
28:41Like, not having the music is a killer.
28:44It's now time for something very exciting.
28:47Every leg of the race has options.
28:49Some are fast, but come at a cost.
28:51Some are cheap, but involve a bit more improvising.
28:53And sometimes the smartest move isn't the obvious one,
28:56which is why Alfie, our resident travel expert,
28:58is here with his geography teacher, Blazer, on.
29:01I don't know why it doesn't add to this at all.
29:03I disagree.
29:04I think it's great.
29:04One size fits all, that one.
29:06All right.
29:06You're going to reveal the very best way to travel through our first leg,
29:10all right, with the most unmissable detours along the way.
29:13So Alfie, you're taking us from Palermo to Foscado.
29:17Your race starts now.
29:18So leg one is all about controlled temptation,
29:22and I would start in Naples.
29:23Now, yes, it's a bit punchy on prices we've seen,
29:26especially for day one,
29:27with ferries from Palermo coming in at around £40 per person,
29:30but you land in a transport gold mine.
29:33Now, I'm a huge football buff,
29:35and football is a way of life in this city,
29:36as we saw from the episode.
29:38But if history is your thing,
29:40then Castle Nuovo, finished in 1282,
29:42is your must-visit spot in the pizza capital.
29:45Now, here's my big tactical detour for the leg, Matera.
29:49You get a train to Salerno,
29:50then a four-hour bus across for roughly £14,
29:52and you'll arrive in one of the oldest
29:54continuously inhabited cities in the world.
29:57These sassy districts are carved straight into the rocks,
30:00with these homes and churches dating back thousands of years.
30:03It's probably why they called it a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
30:05but I don't know.
30:07But then it's all eyes on the checkpoint.
30:09Take a one-and-a-half-hour train to Bari,
30:11then take the overnight ferry to Patras.
30:14It's roughly €70 to €90,
30:15but you're saving a night's accommodation
30:17and covering some serious distance while you sleep.
30:20As we've spoken about, that's race gold.
30:22From there, it's a bit of Greek island hopping to Kefalonia.
30:25I believe you two would propose to each other
30:26somewhere along the route when it comes to beaches,
30:28but, you know, get your name in that book quickly, Harrison,
30:32and enjoy your checkpoint hotel.
30:34There we go.
30:34And we do enjoy a checkpoint hotel.
30:36Yeah, we do.
30:37That is life-saving when you're actually doing the race.
30:39All right, well, there you have it.
30:40Thank you very much, Alfie.
30:41Much easier, really, to work when you're not rushed,
30:46sweaty, and competing against eight other people.
30:47Slightly.
30:48That is fine.
30:49I am slightly space-constrained, though, in this place.
30:52It's a small blazer.
30:52It's a small blazer, guys.
30:54Right, now, before we go,
30:55this is something that I am very excited about.
30:57We have an exclusive sneak peek
30:58of next week's episode of Race Across the World.
31:00You're not going to see this anywhere else.
31:02Enjoy.
31:04Oh, sorry.
31:05Do you mind if I speak to you?
31:06Do you don't mind?
31:07We're trying to get to Istanbul tonight.
31:10We have no way of booking it,
31:11but we can pay for it in cash.
31:13Would you be able to give us a hand?
31:15Okay.
31:16Bus to Istanbul.
31:18If we don't get that bus,
31:20we then have to stay the night
31:22and get a bus tomorrow morning.
31:24Race-wise, this couldn't make or break us.
31:26It's processing payment.
31:28Wait for our internet.
31:29There's no Wi-Fi.
31:31I feel sick.
31:32It's refreshing.
31:33Please, internet.
31:34Please, please, please, please, please.
31:36Please?
31:37Should we refresh?
31:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:39Just go again, yeah.
31:40Okay, so I think it's gone through.
31:43We don't have a booking confirmation.
31:44The money has gone through,
31:46so I owe you this.
31:48It's a lot of money and a limited budget.
31:51We have paid her.
31:53She hasn't just paid into the night.
31:54So until we actually physically see the ticket,
31:57we're just going to be a bit worried.
32:00Four percent of their total budget handed over.
32:03My old heart is ticking a lot more
32:05than it should be at the moment.
32:06They wait to see if the gamble has paid off.
32:10He is going through it.
32:11He is going through it.
32:13You can hear it in a stress man.
32:15Yeah, that is a stress man.
32:16Week two, you're not stressed.
32:18That's got to happen.
32:19And you haven't seen the booking confirmation.
32:21That is...
32:21Oh, yeah, that's...
32:22That's scary, I feel.
32:24You could have just been handing over money for fun.
32:2690 quid is a lot of money as well.
32:28So that's a big chunk of money to gamble.
32:30Especially that early.
32:31It's hard to give away that money
32:33at the beginning, isn't it?
32:34Yeah, exactly.
32:35All right, he's taking a hit.
32:36We're going to have to see how it pans out.
