00:07The Achaemenid Persians originated from the Fars region of Southern Persia,
00:11which is now part of modern Iran.
00:15Before they rose as a great power,
00:18This region was once controlled by the Elamites and then by the media.
00:23These last two nations had ethnic ties with Persia.
00:27because they both come from the Indo-European language group.
00:30However, the media nation had already built a more organized political system.
00:36The Achaemenid dynasty itself claimed that their lineage came from a figure named Achaemenus,
00:43which later became the origin of the name of the dynasty.
00:46When the Persians built their empire,
00:49the city of Susa, which had previously been the center of Elamite power,
00:53It was also used as one of the important capital cities of the kingdom.
00:57The rise of Persia began when Cyrus the Great ascended the throne in 559 BC.
01:04He led a rebellion against the Medes between 553 and 550 BC.
01:12and managed to defeat them.
01:14After that, Cyrus expanded his power by conquering the great kingdoms in the near east.
01:21Defeated the Libyan kingdom around 546 BC
01:26and then conquered Babylon in 539 BC.
01:31His successor, Cambyses II,
01:34continued the expansion and finally conquered Egypt in 525 BC.
