00:31Hello everybody, the familiar sound of the Countdown theme tune this Thursday afternoon and hopefully we can make your afternoon
00:37just that little bit more enjoyable. Thank you for tuning in. Hi Rachel. Hi Cole. Today's World Listening Day, which
00:44is quite specific, it's about taking time to properly listen to the natural environment around us. It explores the relationship
00:51between human and the natural world. So when I ask you to sort of picture that, to really listen to
00:58the sounds around you, what can you do?
00:59What comes to you? Around here or just like the best sound? No, in your life. Yeah. I think the
01:04best sound may be Iguazu Falls, the sound of all that water coming down and just, you know, with a
01:11few birds and some butterflies flapping about.
01:13Well, we've got the same answer. You can tell we don't prepare this. Waterfalls. I love the sound of a
01:21waterfall. Small, big, the power of like Niagara Falls. It's just, it's majestic. And Birdsong. I'm a city boy who
01:27only started living outside of cities for the first time ever in the last like couple of years. And you
01:33don't, I never realised how deafening Birdsong is.
01:37Definitely. And you're saying it is a bad thing. No, love it. Absolutely love it. And I couldn't sleep without
01:41it. Absolutely brilliant. Good time to bring in Susie Dent and Chris McCausland.
01:47The sounds of the natural world around us. Susie, what's yours straight in?
01:53Well, you took Birdsong from me because I definitely have that one. But Cicadas for me, holiday always. That's just,
02:00you know, some people get really annoyed by it. But it's just the moment you hear it, you think heat,
02:05holiday, sun for me.
02:07That's a great joke. Chris? I think my favourite is just a bit of silence. Yeah.
02:13So on this first round, how about we don't play the tune for the clock and we all, we'll just
02:18have 30 seconds of peace and quiet while these guys do their business.
02:21No can do. Our champion is Fiona Wood. Two wins so far, really getting to know Fiona, who lives up
02:29in Kinross. We've learned everything about her holidays, how she built her house, all sorts of stuff.
02:34Tell me about the Scottish Community Drama Association, because you've been connected to him for a quarter of a century.
02:40Yeah, so I was involved with drama when I was at school. I did a bit of acting. The thing
02:46is, once you become an accountant, everybody wants you to be treasurer.
02:50So I got further involved by being treasurer for the association and it just happened to have done it for
02:56quite a long time. I finally managed to find somebody else to take over from me last year.
03:01Well, you're up against Janet Turville, who's a retired vicar, Church of England vicar, and you're from, well, everywhere.
03:10Because in your adult life, you've had 21 different homes.
03:14Yes.
03:15So how does that work? Because I'd assume as a vicar you put down your roots, you've got your parish,
03:19or were you moving from place to place?
03:21Well, I've only been, I was a vicar from 2012, or curate vicar from 2012, so most of the moves
03:29actually happened before then.
03:31Were they all just of your own choices? Do you have to change your name as well for a few
03:35of them?
03:37Witness protection or something?
03:39Oh, yeah, you're right, actually, retired vicar.
03:41People sat at home, I don't know her as Jane Turville.
03:46Well, listen, Fiona and whatever your real name is, best of luck.
03:52Off you go, Fiona.

05:11seem that she's moved through a lot of them regions.
05:14LAUGHTER

11:50So, pushing and shaping.
11:52And what else would you like to throw in there, Chris?
11:55I mean, this is one I can't even pretend I came up with on my own.
11:58Iguanas.
11:59How many?
12:00Iguanas.
12:00Also there for seven.
12:02We're just adding more sevens to the list.
12:04Anguish as well.

12:15You can indeed.

12:55And the target, 395.
12:55And the target, 395.
12:56And the target, 395.
12:57And the target, 395.
12:59And the target, 395.
13:02And the target, 395.
13:05Let's get through it. 395, Janet? 395.
13:08And Fiona? Yes, 395.
13:10Let's just get through this quickly. Janet?
13:12Four times 100, minus five.
13:14Not wasting the ink. No, Fiona?
13:16Yeah, same.
13:17John, let's applaud them.
13:21Look at that, nearly half-century each, cannot split them.
13:2449 points each, and we've only had six rounds of today's countdown.
13:28Great standard Chris McCausland.
13:30Let's talk, let's continue to talk about sounds.
13:34I find that really interesting.
13:35I was just thinking actually during that 30 seconds,
13:39because there was nothing else to do.
13:40I was thinking about what you said about waterfalls
13:43and that sort of thing when you can't see them,
13:45how it can sound like so many other things.
13:47I know you're a huge football fan.
13:49So is the roar of a crowd quite like a waterfall?
13:52That kind of just like white noise of a football crowd?
13:56It depends, really.
13:58It's, you know, often you'll know when you're watching the football
14:01on the telly, listening on the radio, or even if you're there.
14:04It's, sometimes you don't, if they're singing a chant,
14:07you know, you don't really hear what the words are, do you?
14:09You can hear, you know what it is by the kind of tune of the white noise.
14:13Yeah.
14:13You know what I mean? It becomes this overwhelming sound.
14:16But here's the thing as well, is that, like, if I go to the football,
14:22I'm obviously not watching what's going on.
14:23And some of the, you know, you go to Anfield, you can get like a headset
14:27and it'll, you know, you get, Steve Hunter does the in-house,
14:30very, very ultra-biased Liverpool commentary.
14:33And, erm, you get the earpiece and you can listen to Steve.
14:36But the noise around you gets so loud when anything exciting happens
14:40that you can only really hear the boring bits.
14:45So, you get to hear all the, you know, the throw-ins in your own half
14:48and the things like that.
14:49But as soon as they get down the other end and it all builds up around you,
14:52you lose it completely.
14:54So, erm, it's good to go to the football for the atmosphere,
14:57but not necessarily for, erm, enjoying the commentary on anything fun,
15:02you know.
15:02Wow.
15:02And I got myself into a little bit of trouble going back some years
15:05when I went down, you know, down to me local.
15:08Liverpool were playing Tottenham.
15:10And, erm, you have it on the big screen, you know, like having a pint.
15:13It's a social thing, isn't it, football?
15:15Yeah.
15:15But I thought, well, I'll take me little radio and I'll have a bit of Five Live
15:18in one ear and have a pint and I'll get the best of both worlds.
15:22But I realised I was ahead of everybody else.
15:24Yeah.
15:25And Liverpool scored and I got caught up in the moment and I jumped up
15:28to celebrate and realised that no-one else knew it had happened yet.
15:32And I tried to kind of backtrack and slammed myself into reverse
15:36and I knocked a load of drinks over.
15:38And everybody turned round to see what had happened
15:40and they all missed the goal going in behind them.
15:43So, I was instantly banned from taking my radio in for the football.
15:48But, erm, you know, the radio is definitely the way to enjoy the football.
15:54Brilliant. Thank you so much, Chris.
15:5849 points apiece. Can't wait to see what happens today.
16:02Fiona, our champion with the letters.
16:04A consonant, please.
16:05Thank you, Fiona.
16:07R.
16:08And another.
16:10T.
16:11And a vowel.
16:13I.
16:14And another one.
16:16A.
16:17And another.
16:18O.
16:20And a consonant.
16:22N.
16:23And another consonant.
16:24S.
16:26And a vowel, please.
16:28I.
16:30And a consonant, please.
16:32And lastly, F.
16:34Here we go again.
17:03R.
17:0530 seconds, as always. Fiona?
17:08Seven. Janet?
17:09Seven. Yeah, what a surprise.
17:11What a surprise you've got to see in Fiona.
17:13Rations.
17:14It felt lovely, didn't it, Janet?
17:16Rations. Rations.
17:17Just, we trust you, I mean, you're a tired vicar, but just show Fiona.
17:21Love it, yeah, rations.
17:23Isn't it lovely when it falls out like that?
17:26I kind of sat back once, I saw that.
17:28But what did you manage?
17:30I got a two, a two and a three, but if you put them together,
17:33it's in so far.
17:35Nice. Another seven.
17:37All one word.
17:38Yeah. All right.
17:39Well, so far, we cannot split you.
17:41Let's try again. Janet?
17:43Could I have a consonant, please?
17:44Thank you, Janet.
17:45V.
17:47And a vowel.
17:49O.
17:50Consonant.
17:52T.
17:53Vowel.
17:55E.
17:57Consonant.
17:59R.
18:02Vowel.
18:03I.
18:05I.
18:06Consonant.
18:07T.
18:09And another consonant, please.
18:12W.
18:14And a final...
18:15..vowel.
18:18Final E.
18:20All right, start the clock.
18:52All right, Janet.
18:54Six. Six from you. And Fiona.
18:56Six. Janet.
18:58Wetter.
18:59Wetter. And Fiona.
19:00Witter.
19:01Witter and wetter.
19:04And so many sixes.
19:07How frustrating.
19:08Can you relieve a bit of that stress?
19:10Anything better?
19:11Well, we've got a seven, and it means the same as wetter,
19:14but it's over-wet.
19:15Oh, no!
19:17Never heard of it.
19:18Never heard of it.
19:19It is pretty old, to be fair.
19:21It's the 16th century.
19:22But, yeah, it's just too wet, this weather.
19:24It's over-wet.
19:25Right, over-wet for seven.
19:27That's all we could muster there.
19:29Not a surprise that Fiona and Janet didn't get it.
19:31But what about this?
19:3462 points each.
19:35We are nine rounds in.
19:37They've matched each other every step of the way,
19:40and we're on our third numbers round.
19:42Fiona.
19:42I'll try four large and two small, please.
19:45Trying to make them break.
19:46Four large, two little.
19:48Get the big guns out.
19:50These small ones are five and seven,
19:52and we know what's coming.
19:5450, 75, 100, and 25.
19:58Will it be a tough target?
20:00779.
20:01779.
20:02Numbers up.
20:05779.
20:06299.
20:06779.
20:07779.
20:19Notizen.
20:1980.
20:23326.
20:2554.
20:337.79. Is this going to split you? Fiona?
20:367.80. One away. Janet?
20:397.80. Off you go, Fiona.
20:437 times 100 plus 75 plus 5.
20:49Yep, 780. One above.
20:51Janet, same way. And exactly the same way.
20:53Yeah. All right.
20:55So no big surprises there. We all managed that.
20:58But, my goodness me, how do you get that one?
21:01Well, I started by saying you might want to add on four.
21:04So if you say 100 divided by 25 is your four,
21:08and then you can say 7 times 75 is 525,
21:125 times 50 is 250,
21:16and you can add them all together, 7.79.
21:18Brilliant.
21:20Brilliant.
21:22Fantastic, Rachel. Couldn't split these two, though.
21:247 points apiece, 69 points all with six rounds to go,
21:28and your second T-Time teaser is arm train.
21:31Arm train.
21:32No oars in this vessel,
21:34but there's more than two rods.
21:36No oars in this vessel,
21:38but there's more than two rods.
21:55Hello again.
21:56No oars in this vessel, but there's more than two rods.
21:59Susie, that must be a trimaran connected, I'm assuming,
22:02to the catamaran, that type of...
22:04Yeah, so a catamaran has twin hulls,
22:06and the trimaran has three.
22:08Brilliant.
22:08Yeah, in parallel.
22:09Thank you very much, Captain Dent.
22:11Back to the game.
22:12At some stage,
22:14Fiona or Janet have to run ashore,
22:17but we cannot push them off their course at the moment.
22:2069 points each,
22:22six rounds to go.
22:23Janet Turville, our challenger,
22:25let's go again.
22:26Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
22:29Thank you, Janet.
22:30L.
22:30And a vowel?
22:32O.
22:34And a consonant?
22:35N.
22:36And a vowel?
22:38A.
22:39And a consonant?
22:41D.
22:44And a vowel?
22:47E.
22:48And a consonant?
22:50N.
22:53And another consonant?
22:55M.
22:57And a vowel, please.
22:59And lastly?
23:01O.
23:02And good luck, everybody.
23:02E.
23:04E.
23:38Fiona.
23:40Moaned.
23:40Well, only if the seven's in.
23:42Janet.
23:43Demon with the old spelling.
23:45Demon with the old spelling.
23:47That's still a six.
23:48That's a six.
23:49So, Janet.
23:50G-A-E.
23:51Oh, I'm so sorry.
23:52Six the best.
23:53Or can we go any higher there, Chris McCausland?
23:56We're all about smashing the smaller words together over here today.
23:59So, we've got moon land.
24:01Ah, moon land.
24:02Yes, surface of the moon.
24:04Very good.
24:04Very good.
24:06APPLAUSE
24:08Well, listen, you still shoot for the stars here, Janet.
24:11That's just a little moment.
24:13Still all to play for.
24:14And, Fiona, you're picking these letters.
24:15A consonant, please.
24:17Thank you, Fiona.
24:18H.
24:19And another.

24:28And a vowel, please.

24:32And another.
24:33U.
24:35And another.
24:37E.
24:38And a consonant.
24:41D.
24:43And a final consonant, please.
24:45And a final consonant, please.
24:47And let's play.
24:48What do you call a vowel?
24:52That's a second consonant, though?
24:55No.
25:11You're not.
25:11Even more.
25:12The second consonant, please.
25:13If you're playing, you'll hear it.
25:13Any answers.
25:13You're not.
25:14You're not.
25:15Need more.
25:15You're not.
25:15You're not.
25:16I'm not.
25:17I'm not.
25:18Fiona. Five. Janet. Five. Fiona. Fudge. Yes. Janet. Fumed. Fumed.
25:27But shoot you while you were fuming after that last round. Four rounds to go.
25:32Could be a crucial today. Kind of deserves it. But let's get our origins of words.
25:36Susie. Well, thanks to Michael Williams, who has asked where the word
25:43happenstance comes from. And it's not a word you hear all too often,
25:46but it means a coincidence. So it was just happenstance that I was there,
25:51for example. But happenstance is kind of like a marker of time
25:57because it's all to do with circumstance. And before I get to that particular
26:02word, I'm going to kick off with the word happy because, believe it or not,
26:06they are related. So happy comes from an old word that we don't really have
26:11any more. Hap, which meant fortune, chance, fate. So if something happened,
26:18then it happened by chance or as fate decreed it. And we don't use hap anymore
26:23on its own, but we have hapless, when you were really unfortunate, a little bit
26:27clumsy. You might bring along your own misfortune. And perhaps, which means by
26:32chance, literally. Is that how that one started? And to be happy at first was to be
26:37favoured by good fortune, to be favoured by fate. And it only really came to refer
26:42to the feelings of pleasure that we associate it with today, much later in the
26:4616th century, so some 400 years later. And so you have all of those happening
26:52and happy and perhaps all related. Happenstance, well, if you look back to that
26:57word hap, meaning fortune or chance, you'll have the answer because it is a blend
27:01of happen and circumstance. So if fate decrees, the circumstances will align.
27:07I might be in the right place at the right time. Happenstance. And it's a gorgeous
27:11word. I don't know if it will come back into fashion. So many of them have been
27:15lost. As I say, senite was a week, just as fortnight is 14 nights. Seven night
27:21was seven nights. So many of them have slipped away. But I would love happenstance
27:25to come back because it's got a really sort of happy, bouncy feel to it.
27:27Nice one. Maybe the comeback starts here. Thank you, Susie.
27:30APPLAUSE
27:33Well, not as much as a comeback. It's just maybe just a little wrinkle of fate
27:38could make Janet our champion. Four rounds to go. Fiona on 80 points. Janet on 74.
27:45And it's the challenger up the letters.
27:47Consonant, please, Rachel.
27:48Thank you, Janet. R.

28:11Consonant.
28:12T.
28:15And a final vowel, please.
28:18And a final, another A.
28:20Wow. Here we go. Countdown.
28:52All right, then, Janet.
28:54Seven. Seven for Janet. Fiona?
28:56Seven. Seven as well. Look at this. Janet?
28:59Markets. Markets. And I think we might have a couple of markets.
29:03Yeah, we do. Well done. Well done.
29:05What else did our word detectives find?
29:07We've got the word sea mark, which I think means a fellow called Mark who's got a boat.
29:13What's it mean?
29:14It's an object that's distinguishable at sea, so sailors can navigate around it.
29:19It could be a promontory or, you know, a buoy.
29:22You can tell I don't get some of these myself, can't you?
29:26A little bit of a boating theme today.
29:29That's our lot.
29:29We have, yeah.
29:30All right. 87, 81. We could have two centuries today.
29:34It's going to be there, thereabouts.
29:35And Fiona, you're picking the final letters.
29:38A continent, please.
29:39Thank you, Fiona.
29:41Sea.
29:42And another.
29:48And a vowel, please.

30:51Upscale.
30:52Upscale.
30:53Can you upscale? You certainly can.
30:56Yes, it is. There is a verb to increase the equality of...
31:00It's there in lots of different ways, but the thing is, it is there.
31:02Well done.
31:03Chris, anything to add in our last letters?
31:06We've got another seven, which you might come in, Andy,
31:08if you want to get to the moon land, which is a capsule.
31:11Capsule.
31:12An upscale, it's 94-81.
31:14We've moved just outside of that crucial countdown conundrum territory,
31:18which is bizarre to say when our challenger has 81 points.
31:21We could still be there.
31:23What are you going to do with these final numbers?
31:25Can I have two from the top, please?
31:27This is the gamble for the teapot.
31:29Too large.
31:30Too large, please.
31:31Too large.
31:31Four little.
31:32Right.
31:32We need a bit of a challenge here to get us to that crucial countdown
31:35conundrum.
31:35Let's see if we can do it.
31:36The little ones.
31:37Ten.
31:38Eight.
31:39Five.
31:40Ten.
31:40The big ones.
31:4125.
31:42And 100.
31:43And the all-important target, 329.
31:47329.
31:48Numbers up.
31:48No one.
31:49All right.

32:18three to nine Janet three to six Fiona three thirty three thirty is one away
32:25for seven points in the seal the deal a hundred plus ten one hundred and ten
32:31and eight minus five is three and multiply three hundred and thirty one
32:36away well done yeah three to nine then rich if you say 25 plus eight is 33 and
32:45then thirty three times one hundred is three thousand three hundred and then
