00:31Hello everybody, welcome to Countdown this Thursday afternoon. Series 90 well and truly underway and still just one OctoChamp. That
00:40might change today. We might get our second. But first of all, hello Rachel. Hello Colin. Here's a subject for
00:45you. You put up with me talking about Kenny Rogers. So here's a little treat. It's World Plant Milk Day.
00:50Hooray!
00:51We're talking your hemp. We're talking your oat. We're talking your rice. This is pillow talk for you. We're talking
00:57your coconut. We're talking your almond. We're talking your soy. Soya, soy, soy.
01:03What's your favourites? Sell them to me.
01:06I mean, as a child in the 90s, he was intolerant to milk and the options that we had then.
01:11It was like rice milk. It was just empty and watery and just horrible. And now there's a whole range.
01:18You wouldn't even know that you're drinking something that's not cow's milk. So oat. A nice, thick, full fat, oaty
01:24one, if you ask me.
01:25I think we've milked this introduction for long enough. Let's get over to Dictionary Corner. Full of beans, as always.
01:32Our J of the D, Susie Dent.
01:33I'm with her all this week. What a delight. The comedian, Ria Lina.
01:40Well, what a story you've witnessed this week on Countdown. Could be her second Octo-Champ.
01:44Rob Barkas is up to 717 points and seven wins. I think it's fair to say yesterday, everything, you started
01:52to overthink everything.
01:54Maybe looking at the finishing line before you got there.
01:56I think I did overthink. Made some stupid mistakes. But luckily he got across.
02:02Well, listen, good luck to her. Could be at second Octo-Champ in the series. Could be happening.
02:05Anna Heath is looking to stop you in your tracks. How are you doing, Anna?
02:10Good, thank you.
02:11You got married at the top of Ben Nevis. Sounds horrific. Tell me about it.
02:15It was fantastic. Yeah, it was a long old hike up there. It's about four and a half hours to
02:21get to the top.
02:22And your husband had a broken toe?
02:23Yes, a few days before the wedding. He kicked a door and broke his little toe and couldn't even bear
02:30to wear a slipper.
02:31Let alone a walking boot. And up until the day before the wedding, it was really uncertain whether he would
02:37make it up to the top.
02:38But he cut a hole in his walking trainer so his toe could stick out and did the whole hike
02:45like that.
02:45So when somebody says, I love you so much, I climb a mountain barefooted just to marry you.
02:50He literally did.
02:51Pretty much.
02:52That's beautiful. I love it now. I love it.
02:54Anna, brilliant. Good luck today. And Rob, big day for you. Good luck.
02:57APPLAUSE

04:15What's the word? Toddles.
04:17Toddles. Let's
04:18toddle on over to Rob. Gladest?
04:22Gladest. Will he be happy
04:23at that? He certainly will.
04:24Well done. Yes.
04:28A happy man.

05:54Well done. Anna, let's get you on the board.
05:56Flouter. And Rob?
05:58Remount. Straight to Susie.
06:01Anna, I'm so sorry, Rob actually tried
06:02flouter yesterday and it's not in the
06:04dictionary, so that's very bad luck.
06:06What can we add in there?
06:08Well, we also got remount,
06:10seven, and then a
06:12quite like the six, foment.
06:14Yes. But it's a six. Stir up, unrest.
06:16Nice. Foment. Early doors, Anna.
06:18Do not worry about it. Let's get the numbers
06:20for the first time today, Rob.
06:23Can I have one large and five small, please?
06:25You can indeed. Thank you, Rob. One from the top
06:26and five little coming up.
06:28And for the first time today, they are
06:30three, four, one,

07:37Hot claret, hot claret.
07:39The girl had a portion of dessert.
07:41The girl had a portion of dessert.
08:11Dessert
08:13maybe stewed fruit, sponge.
08:16I know it has, but it can be all sorts of breadcrumbs.
08:18That kind of thing.
08:19Delicious.
08:19No idea why?
08:21No.
08:21I suspect it was...
08:23It's from French, so maybe it was given to a specific monarch.
08:27That often happens.
08:28Maybe it's not good enough, Susie.
08:29Sorry.
08:30Maybe it's not good enough.
08:30I'll work on it.
08:32Let's get some more letters.
08:34Anna.
08:35Could I have a consonant, please?
08:37Thank you, Anna.

09:47Six.
09:47A six.
09:48Anna?
09:49Value.
09:51Rob.
09:52Octave.
09:53Very nice. Well done.
09:55Nice indeed.
09:56Yeah.
09:56What have we got in the dictionary corner?
09:57A couple of other sixes.
09:59Cutlet.
10:00Yeah.
10:00Avocet.
10:01Avocet.
10:02Wading bird.
10:03A wading bird, yeah.
10:04OK, Anna, not bad so far.
10:06It's just the odd letter here and there.
10:08Rob, let's get nine more.
10:10Start with the consonant again, please.
10:11Thank you, Rob.
10:13D.
10:13And again.
10:15N.
10:16And another.
10:18G.
10:19And a vowel, please.
10:21A.
10:22And another.
10:23I.
10:24And a third.
10:26A.
10:27And a consonant, please.
10:30T.
10:31And again.
10:32D.
10:35And again, please.
10:37Lastly, Y.
10:39And half a minute.
10:40And a consonant.
10:42And another.
11:03Thanks for joining us.
11:04Bye.
11:04Everybody.
11:11I'll do's, Rob.
11:13Eight.
11:14Anna.
11:15Just six.
11:16Yeah, where's he pulled an eight from?
11:18I hope it's not one of those where we're kicking ourselves,
11:20but what's the six?
11:22Dating.
11:23Yeah, spot I was mine too.
11:25Come on.
11:25Toad-ing.
11:26Pardon?
11:27Toad-ing.
11:28Toad-ing.
11:29Erm, there is no O in here, Rob.
11:33Toad-ing would have been fine.
11:34But we don't have enough.
11:35I've got a D7-0.
11:36Aw, sorry.
11:38That's why we were so surprised when you said eight from those letters.
11:42Maybe there was.
11:43We'll find out.
11:44Let's head over to Susie and Ria.
11:46No, we were quite alarmed by that because we only had sixes.
11:49Yeah, sixes.
11:51We're dainty for six.
11:54Yeah.
11:54Adding.
11:55Adding.
11:56Yes, that was it.
11:57And that's it?
11:58Yep.
11:58But no O, so the six points go to Anna.
12:02And just like that, gets a little bit tighter as we get Anna's numbers.
12:06Could I have two large, please, Rachel?
12:09Two large.
12:10Four little.
12:11Don't be so nervous.
12:12Won't hurt a bit.
12:13The four little ones.
12:14Three, nine, one, six.
12:18And the large two.
12:1825 and 75.
12:20And the target to reach 351.
12:23Three, five, one.
12:24Numbers up.
12:24Three, five, one.
12:54Three, five, one.
12:56Anna?
12:56I think I've got three, five, three.
12:58Two away.
12:59Rob, what do you think?
13:01Three, 50.
13:02One away.
13:03What have you got?
13:0475 minus 25 is 50.
13:07Minus 25, 50.
13:08Six plus one is seven.
13:10Yep.
13:11No more reply.
13:12Three, 50.
13:13One away.
13:14That gets you seven points, but three, five, one.
13:17Shirley, back of the net time.
13:19Well, you could say 75 plus nine is 84.
13:2484 divided by six is 14.
13:26And then 14 times 25 is 350.
13:30And you can add the one.
13:31Three, five, one.
13:33APPLAUSE
13:34I feel like that was the mathematical equivalent of getting nutmegged in football.
13:39Do you know what I mean?
13:39I feel like there's a little bit of showboating going on there, I have to say.
13:43Fantastic.
13:43Well done.
13:44Well done if you got that at home as well.
13:4638.16 here in the studio as we have a chat with Rialina for the fourth time this week.
13:53You know, before people come on Countdown for the first time, they always say, this
13:56is what we can talk about.
13:57Throw all that out after a chat yesterday.
13:59Let's just chat.
14:00What's going on with the brooches?
14:03Because we should tell people this because they don't see it.
14:06So we're about, what, 10 meters away?
14:08And I'm only noticing it when we're walking up to the dressing room.
14:11It's a different animal every day.
14:12It has been a different animal every day.
14:14Right, so what's the, talk to me about these collections.
14:17Well, I'm always on the move in comedy and this was one chance where they said you sit
14:21behind a desk.
14:22It's sort of like a throwback to the pandemic.
14:24I don't even have to wear trousers for this job.
14:27I am.
14:28I'm at home right now.
14:30I will prove my workings to Susie.
14:33But I just, it just, I have, my mother loves jewelry and so as a nod to her, I never,
14:39I
14:39don't, I don't wear a lot of jewelry.
14:40As an autistic, I don't often wear jewelry on the daily because it's
14:44too much sensory overload.
14:45Yeah.
14:45But I do still like to look pretty.
14:47And so this was a wonderful opportunity to be able to just come out and show off some
14:50of the brooches.
14:51Take us through the animals.
14:52What are we on this week?
14:53Because you know this is a very animal friendly show.
14:55Oh, now you're testing me.
14:57Monday was a frog.
14:58Yeah.
14:59Tuesday was a zebra.
15:01Oh, beautiful.
15:03Yesterday was a, oh, an, well, an alligator or a crocodile.
15:06Yeah.
15:07Oh, I should know the difference.
15:08It was one of those.
15:09It was very sparkly.
15:10And today's an owl.
15:11Are brooches then a fascination at the moment, an obsession?
15:15No.
15:16Well, it just, it just goes with, it just goes with the bling as well.
15:19So I also like to match, so I, I like to find weird and wonderful things.
15:23So all of my tops are usually vintage finds that you can go scummaging for things.
15:29This ring I found at a, at a, what was it, not even a vintage shop, like a little knick
15:34-knack
15:34shop in New York.
15:35And it was just out on the street, just a whole tray of, of animal rings.
15:39So that's the owl to match the owl.
15:42And it's just finding things.
15:44It's, it's, we call it pre-loved now.
15:46I just love, you know, the idea, it has, it, you know, the things this ring must have
15:50seen before it got here.
15:51And then, you know, seeing Susie.
15:56Well, brilliant.
15:56I absolutely love it. Can't wait until tomorrow's brooched.
16:03All right, Rob, you've been there, you've got the badge already, but can you make it
16:07OctoChamp today?
16:08Your letters.
16:10Colton, please, Rachel.
16:11Thank you, Rob.
16:12H.
16:13And again, please.

16:24And a third.
16:25O.
16:26And a consonant, please.
16:28S.
16:29And again.
16:31D.
16:35And a final consonant, please.
16:37A final W.
16:39And here we go again.
16:40What?
16:57I.
17:11Rob, eight.
17:13Anna, eight.
17:15Rob, downiest.
17:18What are you, Anna?
17:19Same word.
17:20Bit bigger.
17:22Right, well done.
17:23Well done to you.
17:24Eight points.
17:25Each, I'm guessing, they've matched you at least.
17:29Mm-hm.
17:30They have.
17:31There was also hedonist for eight.
17:34Wonderful.
17:3546.24, your letters now, Anna.
17:38Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:39Thank you, Anna.

17:51Another L.
17:52A.
17:54Consonant, please.
17:56N.
17:59And another consonant.
18:01S.
18:02And a vowel.
18:04I.
18:07And a consonant, please.
18:09And lastly, N.
18:11And start the clock.
18:13The Heart of the Oh!
18:13The Heart of the Oh!
18:14The Heart of the Oh!
19:3952-24.
19:40Back to the numbers, Rob.
19:41Here we go.
19:42I have one large and five small, please.
19:45Thank you, Rob.
19:45I don't need to ask you anymore.
19:47One large, five little.
19:49You know what you like.
19:50And you like, hopefully.
19:52Three, one, seven, seven, eight, and 75.
19:57And the target, 475.
20:00475.
20:01Numbers up.
20:324-7-5 for you, Rob?
20:34Yes. Yeah? And for you, Anna?
20:37No, 4-7-1. Dismissed it, Rob.
20:38This is a big step towards OctoChamp.
20:417-1 is 6. 7-1 is 6.
20:4475 plus 3 is 78. Yep.
20:47Ties them together. Is 468.
20:51We'll have the other seven. Anna, the second seven. Well done. 4-7-5.
20:55APPLAUSE
20:57That's the moment. Six rounds to go.
20:59When we come back after the break and the Tea Time teaser is
21:02Donate Wok. Donate Wok, as in W-O-K.
21:06No cooking involved, but there might be the odd chop.
21:09No cooking involved, but there might be the odd chop.
21:31Taekwondo.
21:32Taekwondo.
21:33It makes me think of Jade Jones. Immediately the great Jade Jones.
21:37Right, 62-24. Rob on the verge of being confirmed as only her second OctoChamp of Series 90.
21:45Surely already guaranteed to return in the top eight next year.
21:49So it really is the cherry on top of the cake.
21:52Anna, let's get as many points on the board as we can.
21:54You never know. Let's get your letters.
21:56Could I have a consonant, please?
21:57Thank you, Anna.

22:39I.
23:03Anna?
23:03I don't think it's right, but I'm going to go for a nine.
23:06You've got to, right?
23:07Imagine if it is, though.
23:08Rob?
23:09Eight.
23:10That is salt in the wounds, by the way.
23:13What's the eight?
23:14Imposing.
23:16Imposing.
23:16So what have you gone for?
23:18Poemising.
23:19Oh!
23:22Poemising.
23:25Oh, no.
23:26I think you can poetise, but you can't poemise.
23:30I'm sorry, Anna.
23:32It was more audacious than outrageous.
23:35I know you can say that was a good shout, but eight points for Rob.
23:39Was there a maximum?
23:40Not for us.
23:41We just had another eight.
23:42Oh, very good.

24:04A.
24:07And a consonant, please.
24:09K.
24:10And another.
24:12W.
24:14And the final vowel, please.
24:16Final E.
24:18And good luck.
24:20We'll see you soon.
24:20Good luck.
24:55Walkers.
24:56Walkers.
24:57And for you, Anne?
24:58Same again.
25:00Excellent.
25:02Mathematically, not quite there yet, Rob.
25:05The coronation will be delayed just a little bit longer.
25:08Rhea, seven's best?
25:10Yeah, we got that seven as well, but we also got a lovely six, koalas.
25:14Koalas.
25:15Nice.
25:15Yes.
25:16Always like when that comes out.
25:17More animals.
25:18Koala brooks possible tomorrow?
25:19If you have me back, I'll find one.
25:23Susie, Origins Awards time today.
25:25Big day today, but we always pause at this stage.
25:27What have we got?
25:28Yes.
25:29We had a lovely email from George Holland who has said,
25:33at 88, I seem to have been watching Countdown since my first television a long time ago.
25:39If you can tell me about this word, Susie, I would be tickety-boo.
25:43Yeah.
25:44And it is one word, it's got a hyphen.
25:47And obviously, if everything is tickety-boo, it is all in order.
25:51It's got that lovely, it's a bit like dandiest, the word that we had the other day.
25:54It's just...
25:55It's a bit more Del Boy Trotter, though.
25:57He used to drop tickety-boo.
25:59Tickety-boo.
25:59Yeah.
26:00Yeah, so it's just all in all.
26:01It's got a very quintessentially British feel to it.
26:04But its story may have begun further afield, but still with a British element.
26:09And it was Lord Mountbatten who has been credited with popularising it
26:13during his time as Governor General of India.
26:16So that suggests that it originated in the armed forces, you know,
26:22military slang is just so productive with so many words that we have in our language,
26:26during Britain's colonial presence, shall we say, in India.
26:30So definitely a touch of empire about it.
26:33And the sound of tickety-boo is very close to a Hindi phrase
26:36that was tikai babu, meaning it's all right, sir.
26:41And a similar phrase was also apparently common amongst British soldiers
26:45in the mid-20th century, which was tikai, similarly from Hindi,
26:50and it means all is absolutely in order.
26:52It comes from a word meaning precise.
26:54So those two may well have come back to blighty
26:59and have then become tickety-boo,
27:02because what we do always is we anglicise things,
27:04we take foreign languages, we can't quite cope with their original state,
27:09and so we make them more familiar to us.
27:11And if it was brought back from India,
27:12then it might belong to the same stable as the big cheese,
27:17which actually may have nothing to do with cheese at all,
27:20and go back to an Urdu word this time,
27:23chiz, meaning thing.
27:25So the big cheese was probably simply the big thing.
27:29APPLAUSE
27:31We're about to use the countdown at the moment.
27:33Of course, there's Rob Barkas,
27:34who's on the cusp of becoming her second octal champ of this series.

28:56Trainer. Trainer. Anna, for eight.
29:00Notarise. Notarise. Absolutely brilliant, yeah. Well done.
29:04APPLAUSE
29:06And with that, Anna, you can still draw.
29:08Never give up, never give up.
29:10You're still not an octochamp, Barkas.
29:12Don't look at me like that, you're not there yet.
29:15Now, there is an R left over there.
29:17You can't just pop it in the end, no?
29:19It's a notary who notarises. There you go. Brilliant.
29:22So, anything to add? No, that was our best.
29:25You know, I haven't seen a Z at the end in a while, but it's refreshing.
29:29Yeah, very good. Well done, Anna.

30:55Absolutely brilliant.
30:56We have our second OctoChamp.
31:00And what a fantastic OctoChamp as well.
31:04Rob Barkas will be there.
31:05You need 20 points to be the number one seed.
31:09And that could be everything.
31:11That could be everything.
31:12So don't you rest.
31:14Don't puff out your cheeks and think it's over.
31:17Not on our watch, Barkas.
31:19Anna, final numbers.
31:20Can I have one large, please?
31:22You can.
31:22You're not going six more.
31:24You're making the route as smooth as possible for Rob.
31:27Let's see if we can both get another ten points.
31:29Final numbers today.
31:30Eight, three.
31:31Eight, ten.

32:184-7-0.
32:19You need these ten points. Big pressure. Off you go.

32:28Under the pressure. A good spot. Well done.
32:314-7-10.
32:33Well done. So, here we go.
32:35Last round for now for Rob Barkas.
32:37We know he's going to be back at the end of series 90.
32:40It would be absolutely bizarre if he wasn't.
32:42But will it be his first seed or second seed?
32:46Fingers on the buzzers.
32:47Let's reveal this important countdown conundrum.
33:19Rob's going to have a guess.
33:20Gruminous?
33:23I'm assuming it's not.
33:25Rest of the time for what it's worth.
33:27Anna?
33:28Have a guess.
33:31Ignoramus.
33:31I'm not even going to check that.
33:33I know it's not that.
33:35The last one second to Rachel Riley.
33:38Yes.
33:39Is it ginormous?
33:41Let's have a look.
33:42It is ginormous.
33:47You could be the underdog now.
33:49You're right.
33:49Now your second seed, the underdog.
33:52That's brilliant.
33:53Your nickname is now the underdog.
33:55So, you'll come in without that pressure of being favourite.
33:58Rob, our new octo champ.
34:00Sensational.
34:01Second in the series.
34:02How's it going?
34:05Anna, thank you so, so much for being here.
34:07It's a bad day to be in countdown.
34:11Love it.
34:11Thank you, Anna.
34:12Safe home.
34:14Believe it or not, we start again tomorrow with two challengers,
34:17so sleep well.
34:18Wait, I'm not one of them, am I?
34:19No.
34:20OK, thanks.
34:20Thankfully, for the two challengers, no,
34:23because I think you'd have won.
34:24And Susie, we'll see you tomorrow.
34:26Yeah, see you then.
34:26Great show today.
34:28Great octo champ.
34:29Do it all again tomorrow.
