00:30Hello, everybody. The weekend that was is over. The Sunday that was is over in Euro 2024 is now in
00:39the history books. Thank you for starting this week with us. We're really happy you're here. And hello, Rachel.
00:45Hi, Colin.
00:46One eye on the Olympics now, eh?
00:48Well, for you, it's both, isn't it?
00:49Oh, yes. Listen, on this day in 2012, see, you think I'm going to go to London Olympics. Not at
00:55all.
00:55No.
00:56It was a release of Gangnam Style. You know, the novelty hit. It broke so many records, I only need
01:03to give you two. It was the first video to get a billion hits on YouTube.
01:07It was the first video to get two billion hits on YouTube.
01:10Wow.
01:11End of story.
01:12Novelty hits are Marmite. So I thought at the end of the show, we'll do our least favourite. But at
01:16the start of the show, what's your favourite novelty hit ever?
01:20Ever. That's a good one.
01:22Well, I'm going to go with Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Poké Dot Bikini. Because it's so cheerful. I remember
01:29going to Thailand more than ten years ago, so before 2012, and there was a brilliant little Thai band playing
01:35over dinner.
01:36And some jokers requested Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Poké Dot Bikini from this local Thai band, and it was
01:43the best thing they've ever heard.
01:43Honest, I'm not just saying this, that was number three in my least favourite.
01:47It was nearly all a pick for the end of the show, but that's the point.
01:50That's sort of nail on it.
01:52Well, listen, let's end the dictionary corner.
01:54Our very own Rennie and Renato, our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent.
01:59And what a delight to welcome back, how much fun was he last time on his debut?
02:04One of my favourites ever.
02:05The comedian is back with us, Chris McCausland.
02:08Hey.
02:10I mean, it's lovely to be back, Colin.
02:12I would say Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Poké Dot Bikini.
02:16I'm going to say Now That's What I Call Music 18.
02:19Yes.
02:20You can kind of place when everything came out based on the Now album, can't you, and where you were
02:25in life.
02:25But I don't know if we can mention, can we mention other TV shows on this TV show?
02:30You can't because our champion mentions them all the blooming time.
02:34Well, when I did Richard Osman's House of Games, we did an audio version of Answer Smash at the end
02:39of that,
02:40where they played a song and asked a question.
02:42And they played the song that Rachel mentioned, and the question was a specific Roald Dahl book.
02:47And there is no more fun answer to say than the Twitsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Poké Dot Bikini, to
02:54earn a point.
02:55I love it.
02:56Well, listen, it's the only game show that John Stitcher has never been on, or champion three wins.
03:02He's done it all.
03:03But actually, the big thing is the Online Quiz League, which you started during COVID, I believe.
03:09And to this day is huge.
03:11Tell us all about it.
03:11Yeah, well, it was never meant to be huge.
03:14At the time I was working in a law firm, and I just set this up for something for friends
03:17to do, like a quiz online.
03:20And first season we had 2018, which was way more than I expected, and then more people wanted to join.
03:25It kept growing and growing, and then eventually it got to the stage where I was basically doing two full
03:29-time jobs.
03:29So now I had to leave floor, and I just focused on the Online Quiz League.
03:33And it's 150 teams now in the UK, over 100 in America, loads of individual competitions.
03:39Yeah, it's going really well.
03:41Now, this is an interesting one.
03:43We've been talking music.
03:44So, Mario, let's see if anybody else can guess before we talk about it, all right?
03:49Well, in the programme, originally from North London, that second name, Panayatu.
03:53Does anybody know what musical connection Panayatu has?
03:58John, you need to know this.
03:59You're a quizzer.
04:00And I'm also a Greek separate as well.
04:03It's George Michael.
04:04Look at this.
04:05Two Greek separate descent on the programme, which is brilliant.
04:09It is George Michael's original surname, his real surname before his stage name.
04:14Mario, welcome to the show.
04:16Are you a big George Michael fan because of it?
04:18Hold on, are you his brother?
04:19Are you related?
04:20No, not related.
04:21Oh, that's no good.
04:22But, yeah, big George Michael fan, big fan of his music from Wham and from when he went solo.
04:26Well, listen, when we're playing the game and that clock's running, no careless whispers between you.
04:30Good luck to Mario and John.
04:34Right, off you go, Mr. Stitcher.
04:36Afternoon, Rachel.

07:17Going to have to. Mario? Leopard. Leopard, yes. And John?
07:22Aproned. I think an apron should be fine.
07:24Yeah, absolutely. Wearing an apron. Chris, how did you get on?
07:27I got no better than a five, Carl, so I'm going to keep that to myself.
07:31But Ceci's got a couple of sevens. Yeah.
07:33Yeah, there's a padroni, a mafia boss.
07:37That will be there for seven.
07:38And also operand, which is, when you're doing maths, it's the quantity on which the maths is to be done,
07:44the operation is to be done. I thought it was a pepper. Padroni.
07:47Oh. I thought you meant a pepper.
07:50Numbers for the first time today, John Stitcher.
07:53I'm going to try six more today, please. Six more.
07:55You've put him under pressure, Mario, already. He's gambling.

08:01One, five, eight, two, three, and seven.
08:06And the target to reach, 399.

08:45And Mario? 399. Mario chucked his pen down in 29 seconds.
08:49I heard the noise from here. Off you go, John.
08:527 plus 3 is 10. 7 plus 3, 10.
08:55Times 8 times 5 is 400. 400. And then take the wave, one away.
08:59Simple. 399. Nice one. And Mario? Same way.

09:21Did he retreat to a private place singing What Is Love?
09:24That's now 16.
09:41Welcome back. Did he retreat to a private place singing What Is Love?
09:46That's Hideaway. That's a little bit niche.
09:49Now, Chris McCausland, who knows his Now albums, will tell us that that's Hadaway.
09:53You remember that? Absolutely not, mate. I haven't got a clue what you're on the boat.
09:57LAUGHTER
09:57Do you remember, Susie?
09:58I remember the song, but I don't remember... What's the Hadaway?
10:02Hadaway, it was... That was the name of the singer.
10:04OK. I didn't know that.
10:05It was Hadaway. There you go. John, you'd have got that in the pub quiz, wouldn't you?
10:08Yeah, yeah. That's a popular song. Good. Excellent.
10:10I'm afraid, unless Timmy Mallet was involved, I'm not much good.
10:13LAUGHTER
10:15Right, Mario, let's get back to the letters.
10:17Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Mario.

11:19You are welcome.
11:23Time's up, Mario. Five.
11:24And for you, John? I think I've got a six.
11:27Really tricky, Mario. Right.
11:29And six for your first lead of the day, baguettes.
11:32Yeah, absolutely fine.
11:33Do those letters baguette anything beyond a six?
11:36We've got a seven. And before getting into comedy,
11:40I was a designer of these things. Website.
11:43Good work, Chris. More letters from John.
11:45A consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, John.
11:48N. And a consonant.
11:50C. And a consonant.

12:29The whole thing is for us to eat.
12:38The whole thing is we're going to be fine.
12:38We're going to have some knowledge as well.
12:38The whole thing is yours to do.
12:38We're going to have a vowel.
12:42But the end is it to be a vowel.
12:44That's it. John, eight. Mario.
12:47No, risky seven.
12:49What's the seven?
12:51Lornier. OK. And, John?
12:53Lonicera. Yeah, absolutely beautiful.
12:55It's a genus of plants. It includes a honeysuckle.
12:58Sounds beautiful, looks beautiful.
13:00I can't have lornier. I didn't even think lorny would be in.
13:04It is, believe it or not, but the lornier and lorniest are not specified.
13:08So I'm really sorry, I can't have that one.
13:10But lonicera is a beautiful one. It's beautiful, yeah.
13:12That's good, that's good. Chris, how do you get on?
13:15Can't beat that. I mean, I don't know if Bob Marley made it onto any Now albums,
13:19but we've got Whaler. Nice, Whaler. Good stuff.
13:22Mario, don't worry about a thing. Every little thing's going to be all right.
13:25Let's get your numbers. I will try six more, please.
13:28Six more, another six more. You want the points as well.

14:16Do you know what the price can be a weakness every cup of grounding ma will stand up?
14:17775, Mario?
14:19No, lost it.
14:20Don't worry. John?
14:21I think I've got it. Off you go.
14:238 plus 6 plus 1 is 15.
14:258 plus 6 plus 1, 15.
14:27Times 10 for 150.
14:29Yeah.
14:30Plus one of the fives, 155.
14:32155.
14:33By the other one, is that 775?
14:34It is indeed. Well done.
14:36Nice.
14:36APPLAUSE
14:39That's brilliant work, Mr Stitcher.
14:41Don't panic yet, Mario. You've made a good fist of it.
14:44He's just had a nice little purple patch.
14:46And it's our first chat of the week with Chris McCausland.
14:49Now everyone watching will know that Chris is a very busy man at the moment.
14:54And we love it.
14:55You made such a great impression here.
14:56It's great to see your star rising.
14:58But I didn't think you'd be talking to me about Christmas in July.
15:03Well, you didn't think I'd return a movie star either, Colin.
15:06So...
15:09We've only gone and made a film, haven't we?
15:12A family Christmas film, which is...
15:16It came from this head that you see sat in front of you here.
15:19And I pitched this idea to Sky at the back end of 2022.
15:25And you know what it's like in telly.
15:27You know, you kind of...
15:29People are like, oh, yeah, that's good.
15:30Let's do it.
15:31This will just get, you know, canned at any point.
15:33Yeah.
15:34And before you know it, we were making it earlier this year,
15:37and it is me and Lee Mack as perpetually feuding neighbours
15:43who don't get on.
15:44Oh!
15:45And we...
15:46One thing leads to another, and we end up blowing the power
15:49for the whole street on Christmas Eve.
15:50Yes.
15:51Which causes everyone to have to up sticks and leave.
15:53And through some kind of bizarre series of events,
15:57me and Lee have both ended up joint coordinators
16:00of the Neighbourhood Watch.
16:02Which really annoys him, because I can't watch.
16:05So...
16:05LAUGHTER
16:06But do you know what we did?
16:08It sounds really...
16:09It sounds really...
16:10I'm making it sound quite Hollywood.
16:13And it is, to an extent, from the world I come from.
16:16But the first three weeks, we spent filming in Romford.
16:20LAUGHTER
16:20We did the first two weeks, 7pm till 6am in the morning,
16:24in Romford.
16:26We had a whole street to ourselves to just, you know,
16:29cause chaos in.
16:32But then the last two weeks of filming, we were in the studios,
16:34and they built this set in Sky Studios,
16:38in one of the big sound stages.
16:39All these interiors that they built.
16:41It was amazing.
16:42Next to us, we had the new Bridget Jones film,
16:45getting filmed.
16:46And on the other side, we had the new Jurassic World.
16:48Yeah.
16:49I've never felt so elevated above me station,
16:52because I doubt that either of them two are going,
16:53you know, we were next to the new Chris McCawson and Lee Mack film.
16:57LAUGHTER
16:58Can't wait.
16:59Can't wait.
16:59What a story that is, Chris.
17:01Love it.
17:01Delightful.
17:03APPLAUSE
17:05Right, back to our game this Monday afternoon.
17:07Our champion, John, has 47.
17:09Our challenger, Mario, on 23.
17:11And, John, you're picking these letters.
17:12Consulate, please, Rachel.
17:13Thank you, John.

17:27And a vowel.
17:28E.
17:29And a consonant.
17:31S.
17:32And another consonant.
17:35C.
17:37And finish with another consonant, please.
17:40Finish with J.
17:41And here we go.
17:43Spin this out,
17:44we call it a vowel.
17:46Throw it up,
17:54We know what is this one.
17:55Next is great.
17:55We're not gonna divide this out,
17:55too, the vowel,
18:05it'sёнger me.
18:06That's kind of a vowel,
18:13That'll do's, John.
18:14Try and a seven.
18:15And for you, Mario?
18:16That's a six.
18:17Yeah, join the club, what have you got?
18:19Graces.
18:20Graces, and John?
18:21I'm not sure on this one.
18:21Jackers?
18:22I did look that one up, and you can only be a carjacker.
18:25Yeah, I thought it might be.
18:26Yeah, OK.
18:27Sorry about that.
18:28There you go.
18:28So, Mario, well done.
18:29Six points, I told you.
18:31Don't panic.
18:32Susie and Chris?
18:33I got the same as Mario.
18:35I got Graces.
18:36Yeah.
18:36Did you get any left?
18:37No, one of the six for you, saucer.
18:40Yeah?
18:40Yeah.
18:41All right, there you go.
18:41No suckers around here, as we get more letters from Mario.
18:45Consonant, please.
18:46Thank you, Mario.
18:47N.
18:49And another.
18:51S.
18:52And a vowel.
18:54A.
18:55And a vowel.
18:57E.
18:58And a consonant.
19:00H.
19:02And another consonant.
19:05G.
19:11And a vowel, please.
19:18And lastly, E.
19:20Oh, it's like the clock.
19:22And another consonant.
19:52Time's up.
19:53Mario?
19:53Six.
19:54Six from you.
19:55And John?
19:56I think I've got a seven.
19:57Think again.
19:58So, Mario, you never know, because six can count.
20:00What is it?
20:01Gnomes.
20:01And John?
20:02I've stuck the E in for genomes.
20:04Genomes.
20:04Genomes, absolutely fine.
20:06Yes.
20:06No risk with that one.
20:08That's all about chromosomes and organisms, et cetera.
20:11Very good.
20:12So many of us are sitting with a bit of paper at home and here in the studio with gnomes
20:17written
20:17on it.
20:17Then put the E in.
20:19All right.
20:19What can we add to the list?
20:20No better than the seven, have we?
20:22No.
20:23We have homages.
20:24Yes.
20:24Hommage.
20:26Mangoes, OES, for seven as well.
20:29But that was it.
20:30Nice.
20:30All right.
20:3054, 29.
20:32Third numbers round, John.
20:34We're going boring now.
20:35We're going for one larger than five.
20:36Now you've got a bit of a cushion.
20:37You want to protect it.
20:38One large, five little coming up.
20:41Let's see what we have.
20:42This time the small one's nine, two, two, nine, five.
20:49And the large one, 75.
20:51And the target, 686.
20:54686.
20:55Numbers up.
21:27686, John.
21:28Yes, 686.
21:29And Mario.
21:30686.
21:30Nice one.
21:31Bit more straightforward.
21:32John.
21:32Yeah.
21:3375 times nine is 675.
21:35675.
21:36Nine plus two is 11.
21:37So I don't.
21:37Lovely.
21:38Simple.
21:38I bet you it's the same way.
21:39Yeah, of course.
21:40Yeah, well done.
21:42Right.
21:43Three-time teaser is dud horse.
21:45Dud horse.
21:47Covered in secrecy about the holy cloth.
21:50Covered in secrecy about the holy cloth.
22:09The shroud of Turin.
22:11Shrouded was her second tea time teaser.
22:14Six rounds to go on Countdown today.
22:1625 points the gap.
22:18Mario, that's what you need to make up.
22:20It's been done before.
22:21Let's get some letters.
22:22Consonant, please, Rachel.
22:23Thank you, Mario.

23:01Good luck, everybody.
23:09Good luck, everybody.
23:31That's time.
23:32Mario?
23:33Lost it.
23:33Just a four, not a ring down.
23:35Strange letters.
23:35John?
23:36I'll stick with a five, then.
23:37OK, the four.
23:38Bone.
23:39And the five?
23:40Point.
23:40Point.
23:42Yeah, there's got to be something in there.
23:43Some chemical element or some medical terminology or, you know,
23:47some rock from the ages of dinosaurs.
23:51Come on, Susie.
23:52Interesting you should say that.
23:53Yes, there is.
23:54That's the only way we could get to a seven, wasn't it?
23:57Yeah.
23:58Niobite.
23:59N-I-O-B-I-T-E, which is a black mineral and is the chief ore of niobium.
24:06Of course it is.
24:07I love the way she says this is the only way we could get to a seven,
24:09like I had any involvement in this whatsoever.
24:13Those letters were just absolutely stank of a word like niobite.
24:19Right, there you go.
24:20Let's get back to John.
24:22May I have a consonant, please?
24:23Thank you, John.

24:50Lastly, R.
24:51OK, let's play.
24:52And another vowel.
24:53And conversion.
25:00All right.
25:06Now.
25:21And another vowel.
25:22I mean, expect a vowel.
25:23John? Just the five.
25:25And for you, Mario? Four.
25:27Oh, a couple of fours in the bind.
25:29What's the four?
25:30Triumph. And what's the five?
25:32Court. Court? There you go. Binder rights.
25:35Yeah, pretty horrible, these rounds, aren't they?
25:38Horrible letters. Yeah. What do you think, Chris?
25:41I think I might have got cat.
25:44There is a couple of sixes lurking there.
25:47Victor, the winner, and an atrium as well.
25:51Yeah, yeah. There you go.
25:52To the victor of the spoils. To the victor of the spoils.
25:56Looks like that victor's going to be John,
25:58but we're not done yet. Four rounds left.
26:00Time for Origins of Words.
26:03Susie, take us on that trip.
26:05Er, well, this is from Hazel Richards, who says,
26:09Why does British English have, I couldn't care less,
26:12but American English has, I could care less.
26:15Surely the British version is more grammatically accurate.
26:17And as you know, Cole, I always stick up for US English,
26:22which has given a really rough ride most of the time,
26:24and we blame everything on it.
26:27And I talked quite recently about one change
26:30that was beginning to happen with the word nonplussed,
26:32if you remember, because the Americans use it to mean,
26:34Oh, she was really nonplussed. She wasn't bothered.
26:37Whereas, actually, it means to be quite discombobulated in a way.
26:41So that's one example of how things are going in different directions.
26:44And Hazel is right. This is another.
26:45Because while here, we do tend to say, I couldn't care less.
26:50In other words, it's nothing to me.
26:53In the US, and it's now gone in Merriam-Webster's dictionary,
26:56which is one of the top US dictionaries,
26:59they say, I could care less, which seems very nonsensical.
27:03But numerous theories as to why they've begun to drop this,
27:06the negative bit. One is, it might be sarcastic.
27:10Another is, this is Merriam-Webster's words,
27:12a lack of education, or that it simply sounds better.
27:16It rolls off the tongue better. I could care less, et cetera.
27:18You look very unhappy about all of this.
27:21But I really liked the ending.
27:24I mean, they are essentially defending themselves,
27:26because, as we know, dictionaries now include language
27:29as it is being used, not as it should be used.
27:32So it is not... It doesn't prescribe.
27:35It just describes how people are using it.
27:37But at the end, you know, after they say,
27:40we understand how this is annoying, et cetera,
27:42however, this is the evolution of English, they say...
27:44And if you can't get past some people continuing to use
27:47could care less, and the fact that there's nothing
27:50you can do about it, you may console yourself with the notion
27:53that they at least are not saying, I could care fewer.
27:56LAUGHTER
28:00John, our champion, in 74, Mario, our challenger, in 39.

29:18Is that one-letter difference again, Mario, what's the six?
29:21Spleen.
29:22Yeah, and the seven?
29:22Spoiler.
29:23Yes.
29:24Happy with that. Can we add to it?
29:25We can.
29:26Got an eight.
29:27Let's go, Chris.
29:28We've got pioneers.
29:30Excellent stuff.
29:31Last letters then, champ, with your fourth one already sealed.
29:35Off we go.
29:36May I have a consonant, please?
29:38Thank you, John.

30:03tumor listeners.
30:04That episode.
30:32That is two or three years.
30:34That'll do us, John? A seven.
30:36And for Mario? It's the five.
30:38Yeah, what's the five? Daily.
30:40And what have you spotted?
30:41Well, can you tell us what now album Holiday was on?
30:43I'd say mid-80s, maybe 86 I would go for Holiday.
30:47What would you do, Chris?
30:48We've got a large team of writers and producers looking it up as we speak.
30:52Well, if you're going to say 86, then I think that's going to make it about now four, now five.
30:56What do you reckon, Susie?
30:57I was going to go early, I was going to go 84, but now I think 88.
31:01Wow, you're easily led.
31:02You should have stuck with what you said, it was 83.
31:04Oh! 83.
31:06Wow.
31:06This has turned into a music quiz, let's get on with it.
31:09Last numbers.
31:10Let's do it, Mario.
31:11I will go for two large and four small.
31:15Two large, four small to finish the day.
31:19Numbers-wise, this last selection is eight, six, three, one, and the big two, 50 and 75.
31:27And you need to reach 660.
31:30Six, six, zero, last numbers.
31:32That's it.
31:59One of the biggestaz散b Armed Forces methodology.
32:00No, no, no.
32:01It's not hard to get on with what you're Yakit.
32:01It's a lag.
32:01You're here.
32:02Mario. I've got it, but not written down.
32:05No worries. And John? I've got it written down.
32:07OK, off you go, Mario.
32:088 times 75, 600. 600.
32:11And then add the rest.
32:1350 plus 1. 6, 3 and 1. Well done, 660.
32:16John? Exactly what I had and how I'd have said it.
32:19Well done.
32:23Right, 98.49.
32:26So a chance for another century for a champion.
32:29For Mario, let's see if we can get you over half a century,
32:32which is no mean feat.
32:33Fingers on the buzzers.
32:34Let's reveal Monday afternoon's Countdown Conundrum.
33:06Right at the end, John.
33:07Probably not right. A care light?
33:09A care light? I'm guessing it's not.
33:12No. Here we go, Mario. Finger on that buzzer.
33:16Oh, well, at least you didn't embarrass yourself, Mario, by having a daft guess.
33:20Absolutely, absolutely.
33:24Anyone else got it in the studio? Have you got it now?
33:27Lethargic.
33:28Lethargic. Well, you were lethargic well after the 30 seconds.
33:32Let's have a look. Well done.
33:35Right, Mario, what a joy to have you.
33:37What a great way to start this Monday.
33:39Yeah. You happy enough?
33:40Quite let down with the letters a little bit today, but, yeah.
33:43A lot of sixes when he had sevens.
33:44Yeah.
33:46That's the way it goes, John. Another great performance.
33:48Well done, you.
33:48Well done.
33:49A 98 to add an average of over 100, as it stands at the moment.
33:54Halfway to being an octochamp.
33:56And if you are an octochamp this week, Chris McCausland will be here
33:59for every single show. Lovely to have you back, Chris.
34:01Yeah, good to be here, mate.
34:02Good. See you tomorrow, Seuss.
34:04See you then.
34:04And your least favourite novelty song ever, Rich?
34:08The song they put on to clear all the clubs when I was at uni, Crazy Frog.
34:12It's right there.
34:13Well, listen, thankfully, after more than four decades,
34:16the novelty hasn't worn off Countdown.
