00:00Dingo, a heavy attack on the level of the world!
00:31Welcome back to another episode of Other Voices, and this is a very special one. Where are we going, Hugh?
00:36Well, we're going home to my home, Wales, from the west coast of Ireland to the west coast of Cymru.
00:41Cymru, Amber.
00:42D'ar jawn, Mekie.
00:43D'ar jawn, Ani Mac. Very good. Yeah, it was there, and it was wonderful, a really special weekend.
00:50Yeah, we have such an amazing array of performances for you. All these brilliant artists who descended on Cardigan for
00:56the weekend.
00:57But let's start with Carlo's Finest. This is Ye Vagabonds.
01:12Bells ringing in the buttered yard
01:15Evicted this morn, thought you might have heard
01:19At five in the morning they caught their way
01:23We were singing in the kitchen when the bailiffs charged
01:27We were the only those wild things played
01:30Airfoot dancing in the concrete coast
01:34Swimming in a river of smoke and serotonin
01:37Our forgotten city of glitter and blowers
01:40I watched the water rise
01:50And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:05There was a time we kept each other floating
02:08All tied together, falling up and down
02:11Thought for a time we could all back to float
02:14But the old river rose and swallowed our town
02:17There was a time we didn't get an answer
02:21I said all the things I was bad at the start
02:24You cut me loose and drifted away
02:27Tried and failed, wandered apart
02:30I watched the water rise
02:40And I held my cover maybe for too long
03:03But I couldn't find a video
03:03And like, I'm idea of a video
03:03Live today's day
03:12Today's day
03:14Lrip
03:14Now
03:20I wash the water
03:24Rise and I have my cover
03:29I wash the water
03:38Rise and I have my cover
03:42Maybe for too long
03:58What a year it's been for Panic Shack
04:02But take us back to the beginning, Sarah
04:04How and when did you form?
04:06So we formed in 2018
04:09When we tried just to do something
04:12Because the girls had to learn the guitars and everything
04:15And then we had our first gig in 2019
04:17The end of 2019
04:19Tell us about the early gigs then, Emily
04:22Like the first Panic Shack ones
04:23What do you remember about them?
04:26Not knowing what I was doing at all
04:27I remember being like
04:29I can't hear anything
04:30I'm like my amp's not even on or something
04:32Or like I start playing
04:33And my picks and all the strings
04:34And I'm like everything's out of tune
04:36But it was like a baptism of fire
04:38Because none of us could really play
04:39It was crazy
04:40We were just figuring it out on the go
04:42But weirdly everyone seemed to like it
04:45It seemed
04:46People were like
04:47The chaos
04:47Filling out the room straight away
04:49And you're like
04:49Why are there all these people here?
04:52We had like four songs
04:54Of our own
04:55Three covers
04:56Yeah
04:56So it was just a bit slapdash
04:59Just trying it out
05:00I think one thing about us is like
05:02We done wait for perfection
05:03We just kind of like
05:04Let's get up
05:05And let's do it
05:06Make a fool of ourselves
05:07Yeah
05:07Do that a lot
05:08Yeah
05:08Tell me a little bit about the topics on the record
05:12Because there's some proper feminist topics on the album
05:17Body shaming, yes
05:18That's the topic of the song Gok Wan, isn't it?
05:21Gok Wan, yeah
05:22Of course
05:22Like we grew up in the noughties
05:24Where every show was about your weight, your looks
05:29Yeah, we just had so much pent up feelings about that
05:33And we thought let's get it out there
05:34And Gok Wan, I think, did it well
05:37Yeah
05:38I scoff for two hours a day
05:40Not enough to keep the red
05:41Bring your shame away
05:42If someone gets flat
05:43And my ass is perky
05:45Maybe I could get everybody to like me
05:47Be just for dinner
05:48Starving yourself
05:49Training as you're done
05:50Back on the shelf
05:51Filled with stripes and skipping meals
05:54Never takes as good as skinny feels
05:56I look good
05:57This is all I do
06:00If I use your
06:02Me try from you
06:05I look good
06:06This is all I do
06:09My body is yours
06:10It's like a few
06:14I scoff for five hours a day
06:18Fat or pregnant
06:20Thin or dying
06:21What would the tabloid say?
06:23And I throw up everything I need
06:27Cause nothing tastes as good as skinny feels
06:32I scoff for 12 hours a day
06:34I'm a weapon to have people on a belly day
06:36And all I tell
06:38I'm having a cat or breathe
06:39The red box is your fluffy magazine
06:41Put these brains when you look at the bones I'm mine
06:43And then there's a real smile
06:45I'm nothing to refine
06:46Nothing's really mad
06:47Because nothing's all I feel
06:48Something never takes as good as skinny feels
06:50I look good
06:52I look good
06:52This is all I do
06:54I look good
07:00This is all I do
07:03My body is yours
07:05And it's like a few
07:06I look good
07:10This is all I do
07:22I look good
07:26I look good
07:27I look good
07:45I look good
08:08This is all I do
08:17Absurd
08:17This pop
08:18Is quite theatrical
08:19And a lot of fun to watch on stage
08:22Now tonight
08:22It's fun
08:23But it's also very special
08:25Something a bit more subdued
08:27From the Cardiff-based band
08:29Who've toured all around Europe
08:31Here they are at Other Voices
08:33It's Melon Melon
08:34Here a depression
08:36Began at five
08:41On the 6th of May
08:44It was a Sunday
08:51Can't remember the year
08:53I don't tend to think of things annually
08:56And there you were
08:58Before my eyes
09:01Tipped away the trickle of flowers
09:04Not sure of the kind
09:06Flory
09:07Don't you laugh
09:07And tickle my interest
09:09You see
09:09One day my dear mother
09:23She'd have cried
09:25She said
09:26I'm worried about your digital addiction
09:29Do you realise
09:30This isn't real life
09:32This is just another fantasy
09:35On my job
09:36In the throne
09:37Ice on the coffin
09:39But it's falling to keep
09:42Ice back on the ultimate times
09:44Let's complete the best
09:45Of only a meal
09:46Theotic movie
09:47I am with notes
10:06Of only a meal
10:11The soul
10:12Is missing
10:13around my brain
10:14Oh, oh, please don't leave me, it keeps racing around my world, you're the most beautiful
10:32woman I've ever seen, well I suppose I could step outside, I could climb up and find dirty
10:43But I'm not sure of the point I've never been, see which benefits it gets him indeed
10:48Yes, I'm in love with you, but child's eyes, from the mountain I've broken to the people
10:56This is the real life, this is not so fun to see
11:25Thank you very much
11:38This next artist is seen as one of the most exciting emerging out of Ireland of late
11:44She's from the Shannos tradition of singing and blends the electronica with the ethereal to devastating effect
11:52This is Roche
12:26It's Leandro
12:29The Eirgond, My cook with a drought
12:39The Eirgond
12:39The Eirgond
12:39Insurance
12:39The Eirgond
12:50Eirgond
12:52Some
12:52Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
12:58I will make this hell
13:02And all your whole
13:07Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
13:13I will build another me
24:00I need the more, I need the more.
24:21Abdu Kakike, welcome to Wales, how are you?
24:24Great, it feels good to be in beautiful Wales.
24:26Your music's brilliant, we're so excited to see you
24:29in the church.
24:30Tell me how long you've been making music,
24:33because it took you a while to realise
24:35that you could make music.
24:37Yeah, five years now actually pursuing it,
24:41but since 12 I wanted to be a rapper, artist,
24:44and I guess it just took finishing school
24:47to realise I want to pursue this full time.
24:49And one of my friends, Monjola, used to put on rap events
24:53when I was like 18, and he had local Irish rappers playing.
24:56And I think that was actually a big point for me,
24:59seeing local lads performing, and then me kind of being like,
25:04I'm kind of better than them.
25:05And it's actually tangible to do it, you know?
25:07Are they still rapping?
25:08No.
25:11Because for a long time, and it was the same in the UK as well,
25:14like, you know, rap music was from America,
25:16so everybody was just rapping in an American accent.
25:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:19Thinking that's what you had to do.
25:21It does make sense, because you're like,
25:22this is a very, like, geographic-specific genre,
25:25and you're like, my favourite artists sound like this,
25:27and I want to be, like, my favourite artist.
25:29And then you're like, I'll be Outkast, I'll be Andro 2000.
25:32And then for me, I realised recent years,
25:34like, what I liked most about those people,
25:36it was the fact that they were being themselves.
25:38And I feel like that's what everyone should be trying to be,
25:41you know, the best version of themselves,
25:43and to be the most themselves.
26:11Right.
26:12As you have one another,
26:13south of Mexico,
26:14I can hold a Glenelbers.
26:17On my side,
26:21la,
26:22the
26:25one
26:26the
26:28around
26:35I'm a freaking dumb gully.
26:37I'll be running around like bombers are doing dumb stuff.
26:40They said that you've got a temper like where the sun is.
26:44Why do you say this to me?
26:45Why do you say this to me?
26:47I don't make a feeling sin, darling it up.
26:50You finish mine.
26:51I said it is a gamma morrow.
26:53I know that your head is away from the door.
26:56Don't feel it.
26:57You're feeling nothing at all.
26:59You're feeling nothing at all.
27:01Easy because I already kicked this bucket once.
27:04I played it cool, but I'm the chance to run.
27:07I'm getting sober, I'm sitting around the truck.
27:10Stick to my stomach, you know what I'm doing.
27:13Easy because I already kicked this bucket once.
27:16I played it cool, but I'm the chance to run.
27:19I'm getting sober, I'm sitting around the truck.
27:22Stick to my stomach, you know what I'm doing.
27:31You can break all of my bones
27:35I still take all of your calls
27:38Since you came up on a smile
27:40I believe you came up
27:43I'm a in business like a son
27:46You took death and you thought I'd get
27:50You were not there to do
27:53I'm a in business like a son
27:53You were not there to do
27:57Easy to learn and keep this one to run
27:59I'm ready to go and I need to touch my mind
28:02I'm getting stronger to take the run to trust
28:05Since you came up on a smile
28:08You needed a better chance for your life
28:11I'm ready to go and I need to touch my mind
28:14I'm getting stronger to take the run to trust
28:18Since you came up on a smile
28:37One of the exciting things when Other Voices comes to town
28:41is that there's music everywhere,
28:43not just on the main stage in St Mary's Church here in Cardigan,
28:47but in the venues and the nooks and crannies all over this very special place.
28:53It's called The Music Trail and it's full of some incredible talent.
29:04I'm Gethin from the band Workhouse.
29:06I play bass and keys.
29:08And yeah, we're here in Lleisia Arryll in Aberteifi
29:10and we're so excited for this weekend.
29:13It's going to be great.
29:18We just played at Muldan.
29:20I think we were the first act on, which was really cool.
29:23And then we're on to a cellar next,
29:25which will be a stark contrast, I think,
29:27like one from a bigger stage to a smaller venue,
29:30but we're really excited for that.
29:38Riding only hits
29:41Played softly from their fingertips
29:44Bringing punk back
29:47Some angels dress in black
29:50Singing in a sky
29:53I just did a wee gig in The Angel.
29:55Is it called The Angel?
29:56Angel Hotel.
29:58That was an acoustic show
29:59and I've done a couple of wee band shows throughout the town
30:03throughout the weekend.
30:07It's always been like a bucket list or a goal
30:10to come to other voices.
30:13It's brilliant to see a local artist
30:15get recognition through this festival
30:17and it's so amazing
30:18to be able to be part of it now.
30:29Thank you very much.
30:31I've been George Christian.
30:32Bye.
30:34Now this one's called Foot to the Floor.
30:36Gather those hips.
30:42I just played a set with a band I'm part of
30:44called Afro Cluster
30:46and we had a wicket time.
30:51One of my favourite things about other voices
30:54and being here in Cardigan
30:55is a band plays here and plays another gig
30:58and you'd quite possibly catch them
31:00if you've missed half the set.
31:06This is my third of other voices.
31:09Feels like it's getting better every year.
31:18You never know what type of venue you're going to get.
31:20The good thing about other voices,
31:21all the venues are pretty good.
31:22And it's cool that they're really kind of vamping.
31:25Like what's this, like a pizza place or something?
31:28Not tonight it wasn't.
31:44It's like a really wide range of different types of acts.
31:49There's a lot of festivals at the minute
31:51they find out they're very curated
31:52to be one kind of a thing.
31:55Whereas their voice is a little bit more grass rootsy.
31:59I'm yet to go explore it
32:01so that's kind of what I want to go do now.
32:05I'm looking forward to seeing who's playing,
32:07learning something new,
32:08stealing some ideas.
32:18It's just great to see the Welsh and Irish artists
32:21having this sort of exchange,
32:23just the energy that you get from Celts in general.
32:26It's such a nice feel here.
32:28I feel like everyone's here for the music.
32:29People care, they want to listen to you,
32:31they want to know about who you are,
32:33no matter the genre of music.
32:36It's really cool.
32:49I last saw our next band supporting Fontaine's DC
32:53in the arena in Cardiff.
32:55Tonight's gig is a little bit more intimate,
32:57but they've just released their third album
32:59called Cosplay.
33:01Here's Sorry.
33:02And the pink and the cloud
33:05The second jump start
33:07From what would I go
33:09Do you want?
33:11I don't know if your o'er
33:12I think they're seated in the dark
33:15Who you're a little person
33:16And I can say, no, no, I ain't got no words
33:20I think you've shoved me up
33:22And I just fall for a naked angel in my
33:26Cross my heart and pray, I'll let you find it one day
33:30Tell me what did you say, I said I love you
33:33Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:37Echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:41Echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:44Echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
33:49We can end it here, or we can go back to the store
33:53We can do your mind when I can do my thought
33:56I think when you see me now, I think I'll f*** it all
34:00When it felt so good when we were just in the dark
34:04We can talk all day, or we can just f***
34:08We can lie all day, just the two of us
34:11If you want me to be, if you want me to be
34:15I can take it all away
34:17I love you, Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:22Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:26Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:30Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:34Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, I love you
34:38I come, I come, I come, I love you
34:42I come, I come, I come, I love you
34:45I come, I come, I come, I come, I come
35:20We can take it all away, if you want it, if you do
35:24We can take it all away, if we want it, if we do
35:28But she decide, we'll decide, if we do
35:32If you want it, if we do, if you want it, if we do
35:35We can take it all away, if you want it
35:38I can take it all away, if we want it
35:42I bet she decide, we'll decide, if we do
35:47If you want it, if we do
35:52This one will trust, this one will trust
36:04I love you
36:05Echo, Echo, Echo, Echo, I love you
36:09Echo, Echo, Echo, Echo, I love you
36:13Echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo, echo.
36:29Our next performer is making his other voices debut tonight.
36:34Please go wild for Masterpiece.
36:45Mandarole in 60
36:48Stoning in a Honda
36:52Spoilin' fake Armani
36:56Library brothers
36:59Outside in a bit
37:03Looking for a stick to cross
37:07I remember it
37:10How they used to work
37:14At our hearts
37:16Don't find how far we go
37:20Just to begin
37:24No slow, we never know
37:28We're lost in the beginning
37:31Just to begin
37:39Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
37:42Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
37:44I'm sleeping in
37:47Made it through the weekend
37:51Markets full of drugs
37:54Time will be this leaving
37:58I'm gonna close
38:01Yeah, yeah
38:03Who said we wouldn't be anything more than this
38:06Since everyone starts to lock in the morning
38:09Who said we wouldn't be anything more than this
38:14I know you wouldn't see me tonight
38:16We're lost in the beginning
38:18I'm gonna go
38:22Oh-oh-oh-oh
38:23You're lost in the beginning
38:25Yeah, yeah
38:27We're lost in the beginning
38:28We never know
38:29Oh-oh-oh-oh
38:31I'm gonna go
38:31We love you, yeah
38:33Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
38:46Does it begin?
38:50My father is on the train
38:51Nick Larkin's all the same
38:53Us and them all are the same
38:57All the arms move on our way
38:59White boys are tilling great
39:01Us and them all are the same
39:03Just so bad
39:06How far would it cost to be?
39:11Yeah
39:12No son, we never know
39:17Life's the beginning
39:20Yeah
39:39Ye vagabond, Brian and Dermot, how are you both?
39:42Very good
39:42Welcome back to Wales
39:44You've played it quite a bit over the years
39:46Yeah, we have, yeah
39:46It was one of the first places outside of Ireland
39:49It was the first place outside of Ireland that we played actually
39:52There was a band
39:54Cowboys Ross Botanag
39:56Oh yeah, great brother
39:56Three brothers, yeah
39:58And basically one of them organised the gigs and drove us around
40:01One of them did sound and one of them opened for us
40:03So, and we just drove around in their van
40:05And everywhere we played was exclusively Welsh speaking
40:08Like there was like not a word of English spoken except directly to us
40:12And then it was brilliant
40:13We loved that actually
40:14We loved it
40:15Yeah, it was deadly
40:16So that was Celtic Brothers looking after Celtic Brothers
40:18Yeah
40:19That's what it felt like to us
40:20That's great
40:21And you've got a new album
40:23It's been a while
40:24Yeah, it took us a while to get not busy after Nine Waves
40:28We had to decide to stop playing gigs for a while
40:31Because, I don't know, I think we probably hit it too hard for a wee while
40:35Then we were like, right, okay, let's take a full year really
40:39Yeah, it's been an interesting time
40:41We basically spent a year writing kind of like a job, you know
40:44At one point we had about 40 something songs that we then kind of whittled down
40:48And whittled down and whittled down
40:49And then some of them transformed into each other
40:52Yeah, it was lovely
40:53It was an amazing process
40:55I wonder with all your travelling and all the gigging that you've done
40:58Has there been any surprising moments for you as Ye Vagabonds
41:02When you've played these songs in front of an audience?
41:05There have been
41:06I know, the standout one
41:08The biggest one for us
41:09Well, there's one of the songs, Mayfly, which is on a new album
41:13It feels like the smallest song on the album in a way
41:16As in it's very paired down, you know
41:19So it's kind of like
41:20It's almost a cappella
41:21It starts off a cappella
41:22We actually, we sing it now like completely a cappella
41:25And so we opened for Dermot Kennedy at a
41:28There was a big line-up gig in Boston last year
41:30That was for 25,000 people in a big arena
41:33So we were kind of, we thought, let's just try out that song
41:37You know, we were trying out a couple of the new songs
41:39And we thought we would try it
41:41Didn't know how that would work
41:42Because it's such a small paired back
41:44You kind of think maybe you're going to do the biggest
41:47Fullest
41:47Fullest sounding
41:48Whatever
41:48Songs that you can do to try to fill the space
41:50But as soon as we started it, we both felt this
41:53You know, it felt huge
41:55Yeah, the room was quiet
41:56Just our two voices and the whole
41:57Yeah, the room just went really quiet
41:59And we were like, wow, this song has got more to it than we thought, you know
42:04Yeah, it was a bit of, that was an interesting moment
42:06Like you notice these things when
42:08When you take songs out and start playing them live anyway
42:11It's like they take on a new meaning
42:13They're not yours anymore as well
42:15Like they stop being about our lives, what we wrote them about
42:18And becomes about whatever people, however people relate to them
42:22You know, it doesn't really, in a way it doesn't really matter anymore
42:25What we wrote the songs about
42:27So yeah, when they grab people and then turn into something else
42:31It's a really amazing moment, but that was a big one
42:33Long after midnight
42:37Crossed in the lampline
42:42Pouring out a distillation
42:46Of hope and desperation
42:49She was grey-eyed
42:53I was tongue-tied
42:57And when she thought I wasn't looking
43:00She'd smile
43:02She'd smile like she had nothing left to hide
43:08Mary got away though
43:11Went off chasing rainbows
43:15Never made it till laid by
43:18Living like a mayfly
43:22Waking from a strange dream
43:25I wonder what it all means
43:29See her tumble in a free fall
43:32Was she really there at all?
43:39Straight from a hard night
43:42Straight from a hard night
43:42Into the daylight
43:47It wasn't for the first time
43:50It wasn't for the first time
43:51All she needed was a lifeline
43:54Just the right friend
43:57Steady on a tight bend
44:02Never let her
44:04Never let the sight down
44:04Could've made it back to dry ground
44:08In the end
44:11Mary got away though
44:15Went off chasing rainbows
44:17Never made it till laid by
44:21Never made it till laid by
44:23Living like a mayfly
44:25Waking from a strange dream
44:28Boy, that what it all means
44:32See her tumble in a free fall
44:35Was she really there?
45:04Needle in the haste
45:07Never found a way back
45:12Never found a way back
45:14Lonely dogs keep prowling
45:17Heavy winds go howling
45:21Through the price
45:23Mary got away though
45:27Went off chasing rainbows
45:30Never made it till laid by
45:33Living like a mayfly
45:36Waking from a strange dream
45:41Wonder what it all means
45:44See her tumble in a free fall
45:47Was she really there?
45:51Mary got away though
45:54Went off chasing rainbows
45:58Never made it till laid by
46:02Living like a mayfly
46:04Waking from a strange dream
46:09Waking from a strange dream
46:10Wonder what it all means
46:12See her tumble in a free fall
46:15Was she really there?
46:20In a free fall
46:25In a free fall
46:42In a free fall
46:44In a free fall
