00:05It's been referred to as the guac, poho in a bikini trend and even Elon Musk has jumped on it.
00:09But this is not a harmless internet fad and experts warn that treating it lightly is minimising the real danger
00:15it poses to victims.
00:16Digitally undressing women and putting children into asexualised scenarios is sadly not a shocking new misuse of AI,
00:23nor is it an unforeseen consequence of innovation moving too quickly.
00:26Experts say it's a predictable form of image-based sexual abuse enabled by deliberate design choices
00:32and allowed to go on unchecked thanks to an unwillingness to treat harm against women and girls as urgent or
00:37enforceable.
00:38What's more, the language being used to describe this abuse, terms such as nudifying or fake images, minimise what victims
00:45actually experience.
00:46Dr. Agavan Salas says that AI exploitation is all about violation.
00:50There is an abundance of free porn on the internet.
00:52What they're seeking is a violation itself, the humiliation, the degradation, the removal of autonomy.
00:58In her work with survivors, she's documented the long-term impacts, hyper-vigilance, social withdrawal, deep mistrust
01:05and the constant fear that any notification could signal further abuse.
01:09While the images may be digitally altered, the harm is not abstract.
01:12And unlike previous deepfakes, you don't have to have any technical skills.
01:16You can quickly and easily digitally undress anyone and that is what's enabling mass harm.
01:21So why hasn't XII been stopped?
01:23Many of the legal tools needed to tackle this problem are already in place.
01:28McGlynn says that the failure lies squarely with enforcement.
01:31And until those laws are enforced, experts warn that the message is clear and dangerous.
01:35Women's safety remains negotiable and technological innovation will be allowed to again outpace accountability.
