NASA made history with the successful launch of its Artermis II moon mission on Wednesday. This is the first manned lunar mission in over 50 years, and a step in a plan to return a person to the lunar surface in 2028.

00:00This is Jeremy. We are going for all humanity.
00:03All right, Charlie, your Artemis 2 crew is go for launch.
00:08Four, three, two, one, booster ignition and lift off.
00:15NASA's Artemis 2 mission launches successfully from the Kennedy Space Center.
00:20It's a historic moment witnessed by hundreds of thousands of people along Florida's space coast.
00:33NASA astronauts, Commander Reed Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch,
00:38and Canadian Space Agency Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen are safe, they're secure, and they're in great spirits.
00:44This is the beginning of an extraordinary 10-day journey.
00:48The Orion spacecraft will take its crew of four on the first manned mission to the moon in over 50
00:54years.
00:55Though the astronauts won't touch down on the lunar surface, it's seen as a crucial first step towards that eventual
01:02goal.
01:03And it's an opportunity that most career astronauts never had.
01:07I'm a little jealous, I have to say.
01:09Get off this planet for a little bit, go to the moon, maybe when you get back things are better.
01:15This mission is to circumnavigate the moon before returning the astronauts to Earth.
01:20The journey has the potential to take its crew farther from Earth than any other human in history,
01:26surpassing records set by the Apollo missions.
01:30It's a critical moment for the U.S. as the world's leading space power.
01:35At a time when rivals like China and Russia are ramping up their own space programs,
01:40the U.S. is moving to reassert its dominance.
01:43To be very honest with you, I think competition is a factor in this as well.
01:48You know, it's a great way to, you know, mobilize the resources of a nation
01:55and concentrate on something extremely challenging.
01:57It's been half a century since humans last went to the moon.
02:01The Artemis program's goal is to put a person on the lunar surface again in 2028.
02:07But beyond that, the mission is also teeing up plans for a permanent base on the moon.
02:12From this one not-so-small step, the U.S. hopes that Artemis may be the next giant leap for
02:18mankind.
02:19Lee Sinchen and Leslie Liao for Taiwan Plus.
