00:00Dingo, a heavy attack on the level of the world!
00:31Welcome back to another episode of Other Voices, and this is a very special one. Where are we going, Hugh?
00:36Well, we're going home to my home, Wales, from the west coast of Ireland to the west coast of Cymru.
00:41Cymru, Amber.
00:42D'ar jawn, Mekie.
00:43D'ar jawn, Ani Mac. Very good. Yeah, it was there, and it was wonderful, a really special weekend.
00:50Yeah, we have such an amazing array of performances for you. All these brilliant artists who descended on Cardigan for
00:56the weekend.
00:57But let's start with Carlo's Finest. This is Ye Vagabonds.
01:12Bells ringing in the buttered yard
01:15Evicted this morn, thought you might have heard
01:19At five in the morning they caught their way
01:23We were singing in the kitchen when the bailiffs charged
01:27We were the only those wild things played
01:30Airfoot dancing in the concrete coast
01:34Swimming in a river of smoke and serotonin
01:37Our forgotten city of glitter and blowers
01:40I watched the water rise
01:50And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:05There was a time we kept each other floating
02:08All tied together, falling up and down
02:11Thought for a time we could all back to float
02:14But the old river rose and swallowed our town
02:17There was a time we didn't get an answer
02:21I said all the things I was bad at the start
02:24You cut me loose and drifted away
02:27Tried and failed, wandered apart
02:30I watched the water rise
02:40And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:53I thought we were pretty much
02:54It was very clever
02:54All I knew was that
02:55But I know my voice
02:56It wasn't you
02:57But I told you the same
02:57I knew the same thing
02:58It was a long time
02:58I knew it
02:58I knew it
02:58I knew it
02:59I knew the same thing
03:00I knew it
03:02I knew it
03:14It was a long time
03:20I wash the water
03:24Rise and I have my cover
03:33I wash the water
03:38Rise and I have my cover
03:42Maybe four to one
03:58What a year it's been for Panic Shack
04:02But take us back to the beginning, Sarah
04:04How and when did you form?
04:06So we formed in 2018
04:09When we tried just to do something
04:12Because the girls had to learn the guitars and everything
04:15And then we had our first gig in 2019
04:17The end of 2019
04:19Tell us about the early gigs then, Emily
04:22Like the first Panic Shack ones
04:23What do you remember about them?
04:26Not knowing what I was doing at all
04:27I remember being like
04:29I can't hear anything
04:30I'm like my amp's not even on or something
04:32Or like I start playing
04:33And my picks and all the strings
04:34And I'm like everything's out of tune
04:36But it was like a baptism of fire
04:38Because none of us could really play
04:39It was crazy
04:40We were just figuring it out on the go
04:42But weirdly everyone seemed to like it
04:45It seemed
04:46People were like
04:47The chaos
04:47Filling out the room straight away
04:49And you're like
04:49Why are there all these people here?
04:52We had like four songs
04:54Of our own
04:55Three covers
04:56Yeah
04:56So it was just a bit slapdash
04:59Just trying it out
05:00I think one thing about us is like
05:02We done wait for perfection
05:03We just kind of like
05:04Let's get up
05:05And let's do it
05:06Make a fool of ourselves
05:07Yeah
05:07Do that a lot
05:08Yeah
05:08Tell me a little bit about the topics on the record
05:12Because there's some proper feminist topics on the album
05:17Body shaming, yes
05:18That's the topic of the song Gok Wan, isn't it?
05:21Gok Wan, yeah
05:22Of course
05:22Like we grew up in the noughties
05:24Where every show was about your weight, your looks
05:29Yeah, we just had so much pent up feelings about that
05:33And we thought let's get it out there
05:34And Gok Wan, I think, did it well
05:37Yeah
05:38I stopped for two hours a day
05:40Not enough to keep the red
05:41Bring your shame away
05:42If my stomach gets flat
05:43And my ass is perky
05:45Maybe I could get everybody to like me
05:47Fingers for dinner
05:48Starving yourself
05:49Training as you've done
05:50Saps on the shelf
05:51Fills of stripes and skipping meals
05:54Never takes as good as skinny feels
05:56I look good
05:57This is all I do
06:00If I use yours
06:02Enjoy the view
06:05I look good
06:06This is all I do
06:09If I use yours
06:10Enjoy the view
06:14I squat for five hours a day
06:18Fat or pregnant
06:19Thin or dying
06:21What would the tabloids say?
06:23And I throw up everything I need
06:27Cause nothing tastes as good as skinny feels
06:32I squat for 12 hours a day
06:34I'm a weapon to have people on a belly chain
06:36And all I tell
06:38I'm having a cat or breathe
06:39The way to focus
06:39Is your fluffy
06:40Bag of feet
06:41Put these brains
06:42When you look at the bones I'm mine
06:44And that's it from your mind
06:45I'm nothing to refine
06:46Nothing really matters
06:47Because nothing's all I feel
06:48Something never has to go through the skinny feels
06:50I look good
06:52This is all I do
06:55My body's yours
06:56Inside the view
06:59I look good
07:01This is all I do
07:03My body's yours
07:05Inside the view
07:08Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived
07:12Wanna go down in history for being thin
07:18Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived
07:22Wanna go down in history for being thin
07:26Yeah
07:27Yeah
07:45I look good
07:47This is all I do
07:49My body's yours
07:51It's like a kill
08:09Now this next band are one of the most popular live bands in Wales.
08:13Their album is Mill on the Hill and normally they're absurd, this pop is quite theatrical
08:20and a lot of fun to watch on stage.
08:22Now tonight it's fun but it's also very special, something a bit more subdued from the Cardiff-based
08:29band who've toured all around Europe, here they are at Other Voices, it's Mellin Mellin.
08:34The adventure began at five, on the 6th of May, t'was a Sunday.
08:52Can't remember the year, I don't tend to think of things annually.
08:56And there you were, before my eyes, ticked a wing and trickled the flowers.
09:04Not sure of the kind, Flory, don't you laugh and tickled my interest, you see.
09:21One day my dear mother, she would cry, she said I'm worried about the digital addiction.
09:29Do you realise this isn't real life, this is just another fantasy?
09:34But my job, with the throne, eyes on the coffin but it's falling to peace.
09:42Eyes back on the ultimate times, let's complete the best of only in me.
10:11It's racist around my brain.
10:23It's racist around my brain.
10:30You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
10:35Well, I suppose I could stop outside.
10:38I could climb up through my beautiful window
10:43But I'm not sure of the point I'm getting busy
10:46Which benefits it gets him indeed
10:48Yes, I'm in love with your child's eyes
10:51From the mountain I'm looking to the people
10:56This is the real life
10:58This is not some fantasy
11:25Thank you very much
11:38This next artist is seen as one of the most exciting
11:41Emerging out of Ireland of late
11:44She's from the Shannos tradition of singing
11:47And blends the electronica with the ethereal to devastating effect

20:52Thank you very much.
20:55Is it 25 different albums, records that you've been involved with since 1988, you said, recently?
21:02Yes, more now, I think.
21:03And that's taken in the Furries by Catalog, Fat Coffee, Paube, Neon, Neon, and your solo records.
21:10The latest is Dim Probs.
21:12Is this your most political record to date, would you say?
21:17I think it's very personal.
21:19I think it's political elements, but from a very personal perspective.
21:24I mean, the world is in a terrible state.
21:26On top of that, I was in a bleak mood recording it, so the lyrics paint quite a dark picture.
21:33But for some reason, this year, I'm feeling much more optimistic.
21:39So it's a bit of a curio for me.
21:42I'm not sure what's going through my head.
21:45The record's sung in Welsh.
21:47How's the record gone down on your tours across America?
21:51Because you've played this quite a bit around North America.
21:53I mean, I find people are receptive, generally, to any language, you know.
22:00Yeah, it's the most immediate way of expression for me.
22:04And it's truly a reflection of what goes on in my head.
22:09And in a way, maybe singing in English is more performative.
22:14And how can the dinas

28:37One of the exciting things when Other Voices comes to town is that there's music everywhere, not just on the
28:44main stage in St Mary's Church here in Cardigan, but in the venues and the nooks and crannies all over
28:51this very special place. It's called The Music Trail and it's full of some incredible talent.
29:55So guiding.
29:55The Angel Hotel, it's called the Angel.
29:56Angel Hotel.
29:58It was a an acoustic show.
30:00And I've done a couple of wee band shows throughout the town.
30:03throughout the weekend it's always been I like a bucket list or a goal to come
30:10to other voices it's brilliant to see a local artist get recognition through
30:16this festival and so amazing to be able to be part of it now
30:29thank you very much I've enjoyed Christian bye now this one's called foot to the floor
30:41I just play the set with the band I'm part of called Afrocluster and we had a wicket
30:51time one of the you know my favorite things about other voices and being here
30:54in Cardigan there's a band plays here and plays another gig you know and quite
30:59possibly catch them if you miss the you know half the set
31:05this is my third other voices feels like it's getting better every year
31:18you never know what type of venue you're gonna get the good thing other voices
31:20all the venues are pretty good like and it's cool that they're really kind of
31:24bumping like what's this like a pizza place or something not tonight it wasn't
31:45like a really wide range of different types of acts there's a lot of festivals at the minute they
31:51kind of they're very curated to be one kind of a thing but their voices a little bit more grassrootsy
31:59I'm yet to go explore it so that's kind of what I want to go do now
32:05I'm looking forward to seeing who's playing learning something new stealing some ideas
32:17this is great to see the Welsh and Irish artists having this this sort of exchange just the energy
32:24that you get from kelps in general it's such a nice feel here I feel like everyone's here for
32:29the music people care they want to listen to you they want to know about who you are no matter
32:34the
32:35genre of music I last saw our next band supporting Fontaine's DC in the arena in Cardiff tonight's gig is
32:56a
32:56bit more intimate but they've just released their third album called Cosplay yes

36:33Please go Wild, for Masterpiece!

36:52Spoilers make our money
36:56Library brothers
36:58Outside in a big
37:03Looking for a stick to cross
37:07I remember it
37:10How they used to work
37:14At our hearts
37:16Don't find how far we go
37:20Just to begin
37:23No slow we never know
37:27We're lost to begin
37:31Just to begin
37:39Oh oh oh oh oh oh
37:42Oh oh oh oh oh
37:43Starts craving you
37:47Made through the weekend
37:51Market's full of drugs
37:54Time when each leave each leave
37:58I'm gonna close
38:01Yeah, yeah, who said we wouldn't be anything more than this
38:06Since everyone starts to lock in the morning, please
38:10Who said we wouldn't be anything more than this
38:14I know you wouldn't see me tonight, but you'll be free, yeah
38:18Oh my, I want to go
38:22It's the beginning, yeah
38:26Come on, we never know
38:30Let's begin, yeah
38:34Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
38:38Let's begin, yeah
38:41Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
38:45Let's begin, yeah
38:49I want to fuck my ribs on the tree
38:51Make love for the same
38:53I stand for love to say
38:57All the arms we've all made
38:59White boys, I tell you great
39:01I stand for love to say
39:03Yeah, no man, how far we've gone
39:09It's the beginning, yeah
39:12No son, we never know
39:16Life's the beginning, yeah
39:39Ye vagabond, Brian and Dermot, how are you both?
39:42Very good
39:42Welcome back to Wales
39:44You've played it quite a bit over the years
39:46Yeah, we have, yeah
39:46It was, yeah, one of the first places outside of Ireland
39:49It was the first place outside of Ireland that we played, actually
39:52There was a band
39:54Cowboys Ross Botanag
39:56Oh, yeah, great
39:56Three brothers, yeah
39:58And basically one of them organised the gigs and drove us around
40:01One of them did sound and one of them opened for us
40:03So, and we just drove around in their van
40:05And everywhere we played was exclusively Welsh speaking
40:08Like there was like not a word of English spoken except directly to us
40:12And then it was brilliant
40:13It was fun
40:14We loved that, actually
40:14We loved it
40:15Yeah, it was deadly
40:16So that was Celtic Brothers looking after Celtic Brothers
40:18Yeah
40:19That's what it felt like to us
40:20Yeah, yeah, yeah
40:21And you've got a new album
40:23It's been a while
40:24Yeah, it took us a while to get not busy after Nine Waves
40:28We had to decide to stop playing gigs for a while
40:31Because, I don't know, I think we probably hit it too hard for a wee while
40:35Then we were like, right, okay, let's take a full year really
40:39Yeah, it's been an interesting time
40:41We basically spent a year writing kind of like a job, you know
40:44At one point we had about 40-something songs
40:47That we then kind of whittled down and whittled down and whittled down
40:49And then some of them transformed into each other
40:52Yeah, it was lovely
40:53It was an amazing process
40:54I wonder with all your travelling and all the gigging that you've done
40:58Has there been any surprising moments for you as Ye Vagabonds
41:02When you've played these songs in front of an audience?
41:05There have been
41:06I know, the standout one
41:08The biggest one for us
41:09Well, there's one of the songs, Mayfly
41:11Which is on a new album
41:13It feels like the smallest song on the album in a way
41:16As in it's very paired down, you know
41:19So it's kind of like
41:20It's almost a cappella
41:21It starts off a cappella
41:22We actually, we sing it now like completely a cappella
41:25And so we opened for Dermot Kennedy
41:27At a, there was a big line-up gig in Boston last year
41:30That was for 25,000 people in a big arena
41:33So we were kind of, we thought
41:35Let's just try out that song
41:37You know, we were trying out a couple of the new songs
41:39And we thought we would try it
41:41Didn't know how that would work
41:42Because it's such a small paired back
41:44You kind of think maybe
41:45You're going to do the biggest
41:47Fullest
41:47Fullest
41:47Sounding
41:48Whatever
41:48Songs that you can do to try to fill the space
41:50But as soon as we started it
41:52We both felt this
41:53You know, it felt huge
41:55Yeah, the room was quiet
41:56Just our two voices and the whole
41:57Yeah, the room just went really quiet
41:59And we were like
42:00Wow, this song has
42:01Like, got more to it than we thought, you know
42:04Yeah, it was a bit of
42:05That was an interesting moment
42:06Like, you notice these things
42:08When you take songs out
42:10And start playing them live anyway
42:11It's like, they take on a new meaning
42:13They're not yours anymore as well
42:15Like, they stop being about our lives
42:17What we wrote them about
42:18And becomes about whatever people
42:20However people relate to them
42:22You know, it doesn't really
42:23In a way, it doesn't really matter anymore
42:25What we wrote the songs about
42:27So, yeah, when they grab people
42:29And then turn into something else
42:31It's a really amazing moment
42:32But that was a big one
42:34Long after midnight
42:37Crossed in the lampline
42:41Pouring out a distillation
42:46Of hope and desperation
42:49She was grey-eyed
42:51I was tongue-tied
42:55And when she thought I wasn't looking
43:00She'd smile like she had nothing left to hide
43:08Mary got away, though
43:11Went off chasing rainbows
43:15Never made it till they'd by
43:18Living like a maid fight
43:21Waking from a strange dream
43:25Wondering what it all means
43:28See her tumble in a free fall
43:32Was she really there at all?
43:39Straight from a hard night
43:42Into the daylight
43:48Wasn't for the first time
43:50All she needed was a lifeline
43:54Just the right friend
43:57Steady on a tight bend
44:02Never let the sight down
44:04Could've made it back
44:07Could've made it back to dry ground
44:08In the end
44:11Mary got away, though
44:14Went off chasing rainbows
44:18Never made it till they'd by
44:21Living like a maid fight
44:25Waking from a strange dream
44:28Boy, that what it all means
44:32See her tumble in a free fall

45:30Never made it to the labor
45:33Living like a maize boy
45:37Waking from a strange dream
45:41Wonder what it all means
45:44See her tumble in a free fall
