00:04on sale this week in the 1968 A35 lovely condition runs really well I think the
00:14cars they don't make massive money after being a commercial there's very few of them around
00:19it's surely gonna run 12 grand and I'd like to think of it more that's it everyone loves
00:25commercials they've got a place in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home
00:29in the van or uncle coming home in the van it's just a lovely little thing to own oh this
00:36is a
00:36fair machine the Hummer blimey what a motor there's something about being in a Hummer and driving a
00:41Hummer it's all American when you're in a Hummer you can do anything you want and we can see over
00:47the hedges go anywhere you want up down dale across anything this is a nice little tractor there very
00:57very special being one owner from new Wow well it's looking good isn't it oh this will be happy
01:04memories driving it yeah great fun like a little Aladdin's cave he's a bit of an expert at reversing
01:14wow my goodness just mind your toes the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of
01:31an auction most people will go to a sale with something in mind but come away with something
01:35different the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know
01:40what's on the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's
01:44love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car because
01:51they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go
02:07we're just trying to get everything out obviously um after auction really for the usual routine just
02:12been busy we don't know anything else do we just go on don't you go on get stuck in just
02:17shove this
02:17forward are you pushing no not yet these next two weeks will just be hard out flat out all the
02:26time
02:26oh that's easier it's just a big clear out and then within sort of two weeks another load coming back
02:34in
02:37with all that going on I haven't actually seen Derek well yeah I actually did pop up for a couple
02:44of
02:44hours yesterday um and then went oh three years of birth I actually don't know where he is I don't
02:50know how was it in the office busy yeah keep it round I've seen a lot of people here today
02:59the person
02:59I have not seen is Derek yeah tend not to see him after auction to be honest tend to stay
03:08down at
03:08Thornton the Dale or he's usually out collecting something so Derek's not laying low he's been at
03:16Thornton the Dale prepping for a visit to an old friend in the East Midlands just if we see something
03:23and we like it it's a reasonable price we'll have it there's a point that many collectors reach when
03:30they simply run out of space too many bikes too many cars and they're just not getting used enough so
03:37it's time to have a bit of a move around Robin rests Leicestershire nest is overflowing so he's
03:43identified some items for auction starting with a BSA Bantam d14-4 it's too uncomfortable to go far on it
03:52and a rather smart Honda CD 175 Japanese bikes are far superior better brake the a lot better ride some
04:01of the old British bikes now when you get on them you have a job to stop the things Robin
04:11plans to
04:11deliver the bikes to Yorkshire at a later date but today he's saying his farewells before Derek tips up
04:17to collect three of his motors yeah a little Austin A35 van lovely condition runs really well I think the
04:27cars they don't make massive money but being a commercial there's very few of them around they are really
04:33saleable things on the Willis Jeep it's a lovely old thing that is had it in France we've done a
04:40couple of the
04:41D-Day anniversaries taking some American veterans round it's just a really really nice thing
04:47it's French built it's a 1952 odd kiss and it was in the French army and finally there's a hefty
04:551954 stepside Chevrolet pickup with 51,000 miles on the clock I bought it on the wind one day all
05:04I've ever used it for really is to go and fetch me firewood in it so you've got the original
05:09straight
05:09six engine in I believe the 3.8 not the fastest thing on the road it's quite noisy you get
05:14to about
05:1440 and you know you know you're doing 40 mile now let's have a rattle through prices the Honda I
05:23would
05:23hope it's going to do somewhere around about 2,000 pounds the SA I'd like to think it'd do between
05:2815
05:28and 1600 the little Austin van we're hoping that's going to be about 12,000 pounds then the Jeep that
05:36has got to be 17,000 and then finally the big Wilburra my feeling is somewhere around about 15,000
05:44pounds
05:53there's lots of cars there but I don't think I'll ever see so yeah it's a very nostalgic trip and
06:00you've come to see some lovely old cars motorbikes you know I've got his little wallet with him but
06:07yeah we'll have to see fantastic I love seeing them just you know can't get you take your blood can
06:15you
06:21iconic yeah it's huge there's something about being in a Hummer and driving a Hummer it's all
06:27American when you do see one over this side of the water it's like wow that's that's cool and more
06:34isn't my book anyway and it's the fact that sitting in the driver's seat you actually can't reach the
06:39other side that's that's quite funny but yeah yeah no they are cool the Hummer's origins lie with the
06:50American military when the Pentagon made a one billion dollar order for a high mobility multi-purpose
06:56wheel vehicle Humvee for short the beast of a vehicle had a suitably well muscled fan the one and only
07:03Arnold
07:04Schwarzenegger who was so impressed by the Humvee that he persuaded the manufacturers to make a consumer version the
07:11Hummer was born these gas guzzling beer moths ruled the roads for almost two decades until a combination of
07:19General Motors financial problems and high fuel prices saw the Hummer range axed but it wasn't the end because
07:27the Hummer is back with 80,000 pre-orders for its relaunch as a gargantuan electric vehicle the big beast
07:34still costs a
07:35small fortune though I think it's too nice to take off road I mean I assume that'd be good wouldn't
07:46they I mean they're big and tall and wide and that this one's done 28 or 29,000 mile I
07:53think so now I
07:54wouldn't take it off road no way it's too good they have to be a pavement princess for me I
07:58think yeah
07:59everything's just twice the size it is over here in it really ah it's just you know everybody says
08:06stuff's like a magic carpet that's a magic happen it really really is there you go yeah it's just huge
08:15isn't it it's taking up the space of about three cars in here anyhow isn't it no I don't think
08:19it is
08:20very practical I think it'll use more fuel to get anywhere than anything else would I mean you can get
08:26lots of people in it can't you and you can travel in comfort but yeah I suppose when you drive
08:30around
08:31if you want to get looked at all the time then you buy one of these don't you in the
08:43showroom no space is
08:44wasted awkward small lots are carefully placed in small spots but in the yard another gigantic vehicle
08:55has rocked up the veteran of the Vietnam War weighs in at 10 tons and is 25 feet long I
09:03genuinely think
09:04it's fab this m-series US Army truck was built by Kaiser Jeep in 1959 and it impressed Dave a
09:15fantastic bit
09:16of kit I think these are brilliant they just may make everything strong and durable and it lasts forever
09:22I love over-engineered stuff why just about make it so it'll just about do the job why not make
09:28it so
09:29it'll do the job easily and forever you know and that's what these guys do quirky little things I think
09:36are brilliant absolutely brilliant yeah I love it to bits I wish I could justify buying one but I don't
09:43really need one I just really like them though even down to the axles all interchange so if you've got
09:49a
09:49problem with that one it will fit that one and this particular truck has even got a multi-fuel engine
09:54which does exactly really what it says on the tin just brilliant idea in it really that engine will
09:59run on just about everything apart from jam sandwiches really apparently there was three
10:04companies that built the engine I think the only one that's really sought after is they do a turbocharged
10:10version which they called the whistler apparently because I mean they're a big ebby num thing anyway
10:14aren't they add the fact to the that they were whistling and apparently you could hear them coming
10:18miles away so so the enemy were waiting for you before you got there they're the ones that people
10:24are sort of really are looking for the owners perhaps being a little bit optimistic personally I think
10:31it's six seven eight thousand pounds I mean that's a fantastic bit of kit for that sort of money in
10:36it
10:36really the vendor is hoping for north of ten there's only one open it's Bob open it and so he
10:44ain't going to do that
10:46it does give you the impression that it would just go on and on forever you know and it has
10:50done so far
10:51isn't it here it is now yeah what a brilliant bit of kit
11:14made it a lot quicker if it weren't the bloody traffic after more than four hours of frustration
11:20Derek's landed in Leicestershire oh that aches right let's go and see oh right then Rob yeah not bad
11:32all right good to see you that's a job keeping well yeah not too bad good how about business busy
11:38hi it's right a surrender it's amazing Derek and Rob rest they're old mates from the trade Rob runs a
11:44local MOT and service center and knows what makes Matthewson senior tick Derek your cakes on that
11:51pallet apparently oh oh good good good what do you reckon do it lovely gorgeous I'm just a bit of
11:58take
11:58over for a while so we're taking these three then yeah yeah the van the Jeep right on this
12:04whole beast lovely so she'll go on last first up Rob's dug out a bit of Matthewson's treasure
12:15I'll tell you what we saved some money by not having them printed they cost us six thousand
12:19pound an auction that but that's uh we don't have to do it now because it's all on the computer
12:23in it
12:23but see that good old days I can remember a load of these cars you know no I can't remember
12:31people's
12:31names let alone much much else excuse me but I can remember the cars reminiscing over it's back to
12:39business the Chevy pickup just not doing it anymore but it is an exceptional vehicle the motor's worth 15
12:48grand because it's so good but it's gonna struggle to make it I think the little Austin really might
12:55surprise you it's surely gonna run 12 grand and I'd like to think a bit more but that sounds sweet
13:03that old bus don't you what a genuine old mower that is gonna have Jeep up top little van underneath
13:09truck on the back no trouble that one I'm not sure sure that I it's somewhere between 15 and 20
13:20in it
13:21I think it ought to be auctioneer's discretion and then I'll go for 17
13:29they are bloody awkward things aren't they yeah they are especially when you're a bit fat
13:35here we are I'll watch you on with that Austin
13:41steady on mate hang on that's it yeah hang on a minute yeah yeah we'll have her on then Rob
13:52a bit more lovely that boy well done thank you
13:58right okay thanks ever so much okay look after yourself I'll see you soon
14:01nice there yeah right I'm gonna love and leave you
14:25they look robust let's put it like that I mean yeah they're all right but they are it's it's unusual
14:30it's different especially in Pickering
14:33we don't see many of them flying about
14:39oh this is a fair machine the Hummer blimey what a motor it speaks for itself there look
14:44look at it really expensive brand new I can imagine I dread to think what the cost new
14:48yeah she's the H2 she's a 2006 model a 6 litre obviously petrol automatic 4b4 yes
14:56this is a you less compliant believe it or not twenty eight thousand miles showing
15:00one owner since the import into the UK there we go look what a machine where
15:04are we then I see 16 16,000 then away in one at 16,000 one hundred and two three
15:10four sixteen four hundred five here with me at sixteen five
15:13tell me when you want to jump in five hundred and six sixteen six and seven then that looks a
15:19lot of car for that
15:19it's sixteen thousand seven hundred and eight he says nine back at you
15:25it's 16,000 nine hundred seventeen thousand he says at 17 it's provisional but
15:29we'll make a phone call I think it's worth more at 17,000 and we all done for the
15:34first provisional for the second third and last time
15:37right it's 17,000 provisional all right nice to speak to you all right thanks a lot take care bye
15:45thank you he was pleased he he wanted to sell it so I think he's yeah he's happy oh we'll
15:50have fun with
15:51this one then but yeah all right thank you bye bye he had a brand new hummer at 50,000
15:58pounds some
15:58years ago he just loves them more comfortable than his bentley so there you go
16:08Derek's Leicestershire collection has attracted attention across the whole
16:11Matthewson family you can't help but smile can you Dave's casting an admiring
16:17glance at the little Austin van everyone loves commercials they've got a place in
16:22our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home in the van or uncle coming
16:25home in the van you remember as kids because as a kid we all just jumped in
16:28the back of the van didn't you didn't have any seat belts you can genuinely
16:33remember an adventure with a commercial they're absolutely great and the nice
16:39thing about this one it's got a rear seat conversion as well so you can take the
16:43kids out yeah they have a tendency obviously to rock that front wheel throws
16:47all the muck in there and you don't knock it out next thing you know all this
16:51area around here is as rotten as a pair so the quick way of repairing is you take
16:57the headlamp out you take the indicator off you take that plinth off and they
17:01fill that all over so there's no seam they fill it all over and then put the
17:06indicator on the front with this little van obviously it still retains its seal
17:12down there and the indicators on a nice plinth so to buy that van what is it
17:17going to cost someone you can buy them cheaper but I think that van will hit 10,000
17:22I could make the decision as to whether to buy that van or not in less than a
17:26minute yeah if you need longer than a minute yeah maybe need to get out a bit
17:30more it's just a lovely little thing to own
17:39Charlie's a fan of the pickup it's not a show winning one but it's so honest you
17:44could polish it so that it's nice oily rag it and just quick service open away
17:50you go got a chip in it there but that to me is originality if you stood 10 foot
17:55away you probably won't see that it's just patina because if it was rusty
17:59there'd be a hole there wouldn't there and in 10 years time when that's got twice as
18:03big then I'd probably paint it but for now I think I'd leave it as it is and Dave's
18:10second pick is the Willis Jeep real so we just leave it at that I think they're absolutely
18:19brilliant obviously they were designed for a purpose and the purpose wasn't a particularly
18:22nice one was it you know who wants to go to war we're very lucky we do a few every
18:26year
18:26they're smart and up and running you need 15,000 if they're quite exceptional and they've got a load of
18:33bits on I mean some come with the guns and all the other fittings and things then they can push
18:37on as much as 20 yeah not particularly quick on the road though 40 45 mile an hour but that's
18:42quick enough when you've got no door this particular Jeep it's got about the bare minimum it's got the
18:46rope on the front everyone tends to have the rope on the front but we haven't got a pickaxe but
18:50you
18:50don't often see the case for the gun obviously the spare wheel is always on the can's always on
18:56and the shovel and the axe are just about always on and you can get everything for them that's dead
19:03straight in there I love all the little things like that I mean you know that's obviously got
19:08a light guide on anyway so you know you don't get shot out by a Messerschmitt on your way home
19:11tonight yeah if you want to see what's happening what's gone wrong there you just turn your head
19:16lamp round I mean real cool we have a clear out and then we have a refill as promised Rob
19:31and his wife
19:31Sarah have brought in the bikes to add to the vehicles Derek collected I didn't use them very
19:37often we'll have a bit of a change yeah as long as you don't change your wife I'll have a
19:49bit more
19:49space so a lot more space I'll be able to get something else to put in the space there'll be
19:53something coming along the bike market its peaks and troughs a little bit I think we've just had a
20:03bit of a trough seems to be a bit more interest hmm Paul spotted Rob and Sarah's bikes right yeah
20:11little Honda little 175 look lovely little little lightweight ideal for you guys sick of these heavy
20:19British iron and thinking of something a little more user-friendly could little runabout bike really
20:26hmm so I write rate them good little bike or if you're on a British version you got BSA little
20:33BSA little bantams and such like brilliant little machines again nice user-friendly lightweight lightweight
20:40easy aren't they don't take up loads of room in the garage put them at the back of the garage
20:44still fit your car in make a lot of sense value wise how are they standing up these days thousand
20:50pound
20:511200 maybe maybe a little bit more Honda I would expect the Honda mid to late teens bit more usable
21:00different generation dare I say older generation younger generation bit more in demand supply and demand isn't it
21:27I know you get a lot of tourists in Pickering and Peltendale but you're not happy in your work
21:32do you think I'd make a profit doing this not if you can't go any further than that
21:36it's a bit of a short trip isn't it well we've had it that long we just shot a space
21:42so we're gonna have to put it outside
21:44I hope somebody puts a bid in for it
21:46Peek-a-boo
21:47you have to see if your customers are all right or to get the money out of them
21:51do you think I'll get a Yorkshire man to ride in this
21:53well I'm not going to do it
21:54and pay
21:55oh no
21:55I presume that's a foot brake for you
21:58well this must be your handbrake
22:00that looks to be in a slightly dangerous position
22:03yeah
22:04you've got your ding-a-ling there as well
22:08oh dear
22:09I think my ding-a-ling's gone rusty
22:11I suppose it would do up wouldn't it but in fact it could be a winter's project
22:16oh
22:17why
22:18need some new tyres though because these are flat
22:30this yeah they're both run
22:31yeah
22:31I've seen them both running
22:32yeah
22:32okay
22:33no problem lads
22:34all right
22:34speak to you later
22:35thank you mate
22:35we seem to have got some pigeons moving to the barn so yeah it was a bit sticky
22:41but anyway we like we like to be somewhat like tidy don't we so I thought we'll just give it
22:45all a quick slush off
22:47today we are going only down towards Moulton
22:50to an undisclosed location really
22:53and we are collecting an old case tractor
22:56that hasn't moved for some time
22:59and I believe it was purchased by grandad their grandad not my grandad their grandad when it was new
23:06so it's around about 1948
23:11rings a bell don't hold me to that
23:13so I'm going down there to meet mum and daughter
23:16they're only local to us
23:18so I know exactly where I'm going
23:27my family on my mother's side
23:30have actually farmed round here for
23:34generations
23:35well the tractor belonged to my grandfather
23:37when he died it would then be passed on to mum
23:42a short hop from Thornton-le-dale
23:44Sophie Hamilton and her mum Marion are preparing for Paul's arrival
23:49okay are you ready there?
23:51I am
23:52yeah
23:53wow
23:59right
24:00there we go
24:01yes
24:02well it's looking good isn't it?
24:05it does look good
24:05she was a bit dusty wasn't she?
24:07just a little bit
24:08well it's hardly surprising
24:09I mean
24:10how long has it been sat here?
24:13well 30 years
24:1530 years?
24:17this case tractor arrived on the family farm in 1946
24:22it's typical of the machines that helped transform British agriculture
24:26after the second world war
24:28it also comes in a very fetching shade of orange
24:31you would see a case, an orange tractor in the distance
24:34and you would know it was a case
24:36brilliant advertising
24:37but also
24:39it was
24:40health and safety
24:41because you could
24:43it was so bright
24:44that
24:45if there were people about
24:47in its way
24:48they would instantly get out of the way
24:49which is brilliant
24:51it's almost like you know
24:52high-vis
24:53back in 1946
24:58my father had a thrashing business
25:00a contracting business
25:02just very locally around here
25:04you know
25:05the winter months were taken up
25:08most days
25:09going to different farms
25:11it would have been really exciting
25:13you know
25:14it would be like getting the absolute high-tech
25:16of today arriving
25:18thrashing
25:19and baling
25:20all day long
25:22when it wasn't being used for thrashing
25:24it was being used for ploughing
25:25um
25:26so
25:26total workhorse
25:28oh in fact
25:30the
25:30the chimney's here
25:31it goes on
25:32that bit
25:33over there
25:34oh
25:35this would be happy memories
25:36sitting on here
25:38yeah
25:39and
25:40driving it
25:41yeah
25:41great fun
25:42well I'm one of five
25:44so there's five girls in our family
25:46all my sisters live in the south of England now
25:49uh
25:49none of us are in farming
25:52none of the family
25:53uh
25:54you know
25:54uh
25:55sufficiently interested to
25:57uh
25:57you know to carry on with it
25:59um
26:00so
26:00you know
26:02I'm in my late 80s
26:03and
26:03you know
26:05there might be somebody out there
26:07who would
26:08just enjoy having it
26:10that's the important thing
26:19hmm
26:20in Pickering
26:21auction time sees activity ramped up
26:25Robin's vehicles are up for grabs
26:27oh it is absolutely original isn't it
26:29it's got a rear seat in it
26:34the 1968 A35
26:36do you want to do this one did you
26:38er
26:38I can do
26:40only because I've sold it before
26:41a very good friend of mine bought this some years ago
26:43fourteen thousand pound I think it was then
26:46lovely lovely lovely van
26:48super thing
26:49start me on it
26:50ten let's get away at ten
26:51ten two fifty
26:52ten five
26:53ten five
26:54seven fifty eleven
26:55eleven thousand pound
26:56absolute stunner
26:58I think it's worth more

30:27with it being a case
30:28with it being in your ownership all this time
30:31I think it wants guiding three to four
30:34and let's hope we're pleasantly surprised eh
30:37it does seem a bit of a shame
30:38it's stuck in the barn
30:39not ever really being used or seen
30:41no
30:42it needs to be
30:43somebody needs to be using it
30:45and getting a lot of enjoyment out of it
30:47yeah that's right
30:47yeah and I'm sure it's done plenty of work
30:49but of course
30:51it's clear to see innit
30:52it's been nurtured and looked after
30:54which is how it survived
30:56well we better get her out haven't we

32:10well done
32:1279 years
32:13yes it is a long time
32:16my lifetime almost
32:33you know when it first came I didn't really like it
32:36and now the more I look at it the more I like it
32:38I don't know what it is I don't know why
32:40but the family bought it new
32:41to run a thresh earth which basically is combined isn't it really
32:461946 this was well advanced wasn't it
32:49it was almost too much wasn't it
32:50a tractor with a PTO shaft and they still have them today
32:53and it's like you know from 60 something 80 year ago
32:57that was thought of and it's still working now so it was over engineered so so much
33:02put anything you want on the back of it
33:04it's either going to do like
33:06it's either going to do like
33:06I don't know
33:076,000 quid or 10,000 quid isn't it
33:09you know it could be anywhere
33:11so yeah I think
33:12I know it's a big bracket
33:14but it'd be somewhere in that bracket I would have thought
33:20oh this is a nice old tractor there
33:22I collected this year and it was purchased new back in 1946
33:28here in Rydale just down the road very very special as you'd want to find one
33:33there we go 18, 19, 2,000 pound bid then and away at 2,000
33:38lovely bit of history with the tractor there at 2,000 pound bid at 2,001
33:432,001 at 2,000 2,002 it's still provisional Moulton
33:46we'll make your phone call we'll see what we can do
33:48nice if it stayed in Moulton
33:50it would be good yeah staying local there you go look yeah
33:52at 22 then provisionally for the first second third and last time
33:562,002 Moulton
33:59hello is that Marion it's Jill here at Matthews Sims

34:04yeah no that's lovely all right all done that's great thank you very much
34:08thank you bye-bye
34:09yeah they were happy to accept that
34:12well it's not going too far away it's going probably about another 10 miles west so lovely
34:17that's a really nice story isn't it
34:23little Honda 175 I believe that one
34:25in other auction news Robbins motorbikes had a mixed reception
34:291,500 and that's very provisional at 1,000
34:32the Honda sold for 1,850 in a timed auction
34:37you all know what they're worth
34:381,000 pound to start me
34:401,000 pound 1,100
34:411,100 12
34:421,200 pound absolute bargain surely
34:46but the Bantam had no takers and went back to Leicestershire
34:49and I need more
34:51what are you going to do with that?
34:53oh lord
34:54that's a bit interesting a bit quick
34:55no
34:57engine will run on just about everything
34:58if you pee in the tank it'll run by the sound of it
35:01so
35:018,500
35:02what a bit of kit
35:039,000
35:04250
35:05got more on my sheet
35:06we need a bit more money
35:07the Kaiser truck also failed to attract a buyer
35:13and there's one other item that looks like it will never sell
35:16all we got here
35:17bloody rickshaw
35:18bloody thing's been around forever
35:20hasn't it?
35:20how long has this actually been here?
35:22about five years I think
35:23they're good sellers you know
35:26you know we get a lot of this stuff abandoned on us you know
35:29someone brought it down and thought
35:31I bet that one will make 500 quid
35:34and it's getting bit of 45 quid
35:36and it makes them realise that it ain't worth anything
35:39so leave it with them, they'll sort it out
35:41I ain't got the legs for pedals anymore
35:43so it's of no interest to me whatsoever
35:47in fact
35:48to be perfectly truthful
35:49look
35:50it's a death trap innit?
35:52you know what I want
35:53really rather than this sitting here
35:55I want this bit here clear
35:56that's what I want
35:57whoever owns it
35:58come and get it
35:59get it gone please
36:00Derek's wish was granted
36:02the rickshaw is no longer in Yorkshire
36:04the owner came back to collect it
36:19when you're in a Hummer you can do anything you want
36:22we can see over the hedges
36:24go anywhere you want
36:26up
36:26down dale
36:28across anything
36:30we're so lucky having this you know
36:32so lucky
36:34the resplendently blue Hummer hasn't travelled much further than its hefty wheelbase
36:38to find a new home
36:40it stayed in Yorkshire
36:42it's now owned by retired businessman John Paley
36:45and he's loving it
36:47oh
36:47it's just like riding on air
36:50it's just pure elegance
36:52it's just pure comfort
36:53it's just so silky
36:55it just takes everything in its stride
36:58you know
36:58you feel absolutely nothing with the big tyres
37:01and the air suspension
37:03the ride comfortability
37:05and everybody has said
37:06oh I can't believe it
37:07I can't believe it
37:10John loves showing off his new purchase
37:12it's the main machine
37:14look at tyres
37:15you know
37:16it just looks the part
37:17today it's his grandkids
37:21Connie, Will and Jacob
37:22it is yeah
37:22it's like new isn't it
37:23the handles come off
37:24that's brilliant isn't it
37:28even the odd fault is easily sorted
37:32that's it
37:33that's it it's back on
37:34that's bloody typical isn't it
37:36that's bloody typical isn't it
37:37and this is no short term fling
37:40it's a long term love affair
37:42that started when John hooked up with a friend
37:44who was a car dealer
37:45let me have a look at one of the numbers
37:47and as soon as I heard it
37:49as soon as I saw it
37:50just poised lovely
37:52I said right order me one
37:54and that was my first one
37:55in 2002
37:57it was a black one
37:58I had that two or three years
38:00and I got a pick up one called a soot
38:02which had the bull bar on the front
38:05and then I woke up one morning
38:07and I realised I had eight cars
38:10and I thought
38:11why do I need eight cars
38:13and we had them all sold within a week
38:15everybody thought I'd gone bankrupt
38:18because I sold all these cars
38:19which I hadn't
38:21but the Hummer bug never totally disappeared
38:23and a trip to Pickering revived it
38:26this Hummer was sat there
38:28and I just walked around it
38:29opened the doors
38:30looked
38:31I said it's mine
38:32I'm having it
38:34simple as that
38:35the bug was well and truly back
38:37after buying the blue Hummer
38:38he bought a black one to go with it
38:41it's cool isn't it
38:42yeah
38:42I mean it's not the first one
38:44but
38:44maybe not
38:45might not be the last one either
38:46but
38:47er
38:49definitely a head turner
38:50all the seats are like
38:51feel rock hard
38:52nice and
38:53comfy
38:53go to sleep
38:54if you're on a long car drive
38:56if you want
38:56they just go anywhere
38:57you can take them off road
38:58and go anywhere you want
39:00people get out of your way
39:01so you feel like
39:02the boss
39:05it's great to look at on the drive
39:07but it's out on the road where John and the Hummer are happiest
39:12the Hummer
39:12well
39:13there's nothing like it
39:14it is
39:15to me
39:16the vehicle
39:19well
39:19well I think
39:19I'm having a midlife crisis
39:24even though
39:24even though I'm near the 70s
39:28so she says if another one comes she is going
39:43I've always loved the look of the Willys Jeep
39:46and
39:47then me father he was in the army
39:49during the war
39:51and he said that he drove one
39:53and he said they were absolutely brilliant
39:55he said you could drive them anywhere
39:59the Hotchkiss Willys Jeep
40:01which has stood in a civilian garage for the last few years
40:04has been reunited with some fellow military travellers
40:08new owner Errol
40:10now has the chance to trundle through the fens that surround his home
40:13in Ramsey in Cambridgeshire
40:15with some nostalgic enthusiasts
40:18well you have to watch a road all the time
40:20especially around the fens
40:21because the roads are sinking
40:23and you'd soon be in the duke or wherever
40:26it's a job to explain
40:28it just puts a smile on your face
40:33buying the Jeep means Errol can now team up with a gang of local aficionados
40:37Mark, Chrissie and Lindsay
40:39who have a vast amount of experience when it comes to military vehicles
40:44I love the noise and the smell of it
40:46I really do
40:46as Errol is finding out
40:50they take some handling
40:52when you're driving one of these
40:53you're really in contact with the road
40:55yeah
40:55when you're driving the modern car
40:57you can steer it with one finger if you like
40:58you know
40:59don't take your mind off the road
41:01or other drivers for a single second
41:02you get Arnhem arse cheek
41:04one buttock goes to sleep
41:05if you've been driving it for too long
41:07and you keep shifting around in the seat
41:08trying to make it a little bit more comfortable
41:09it's just a shame that dad weren't alive
41:11to see that I've got one
41:13it's like my grandson
41:14he loves anything to do with the Second World War
41:18I'm going to take it to the junior school where he is for a day
41:22just so the kids can sit in it and everything
41:26it seems that perhaps accidentally Errol has bought a fine example
41:31although there were teething problems
41:33I was a bit disappointed when I got there because I couldn't get beyond the steering wheel
41:37what?
41:39why?
41:39how?
41:40I come back and I had a word with Mark
41:43I said I couldn't get beyond the steering wheel
41:45he said take the padding off the back of the seat
41:48that's why I've got no padding on the back of the seat
41:51how the hell did John Wayne get in a Jeep?
41:54he couldn't
41:54there's no way
41:55how did that happen?
41:59the driving might not be about comfort
42:01but it's an experience all the same
42:03oh people always stop and turn and look at it
42:08put their hand up and wave
42:10the wife's been in it
42:12yeah
42:12yeah
42:12yeah she wasn't very keen to start with
42:14oh no
42:15no seat belts
42:16no airbags
42:18but
42:19but when you're in it
42:19you have to smile
42:20you smile
42:21cause you ain't doing 100 miles an hour
42:23you know you're only doing 30, 40 miles an hour
42:27but there's also a serious side
42:29to running around the fens in convoy
42:31when you ride these back rows in these vehicles
42:34you instinctively know you're retreading the path that the Americans did prior to D-Day
42:39these rows were absolutely littered with these vehicles
42:42whenever I drive mine
42:44I mean I forever think of my uncle drove one in the desert
42:471942 in Benghazi
42:49yep
42:50and then got captured for the next umpteen years in prisoner of war camp
42:53you can't help but think about those things
42:56no
42:57yeah I agree
42:57these are linked to remembrance
42:59these vehicles are a symbol of freedom
43:01that was a hard fought freedom
43:05oh I love it to bits
43:06love it to bits
43:07yeah
43:08my grandson I took him out
43:10backed in his drive
43:11his mum come out
43:13and he said to his mum
43:14I hope grandad don't sell this
43:30he said to me
43:33he said to me
43:36he said to him
