The Morning Shift pieced together their biggest franchise needs for the Atlanta Falcons and compared those to the decisions Matt Miller made with his most recent seven-round mock draft.
Transcript
00:00but we were talking earlier about Matt Miller's mock draft for the Falcons he has Christian
00:04Miller at 48 Deion Burks at 79 so defensive tackle wide receiver let me ask you about the
00:10positions do you think those are the positions that the Falcons should be targeting at this
00:14point I think that if I was putting together a draft board in the slots that they have been so
00:20it's D tackle at 48 wide receiver at 79 corner at 122 offensive tackle 215 tied in at 231 I
00:28think
00:28I'd be about exactly in that realm I think that would be names aside that would almost look like
00:34a perfect draft for me as it sits right now in terms of what I think we need to replenish
00:38on this team yeah cornerback tied in that did you did you look at anything of uh some of the
00:45later
00:46picks that Miller had in that mock draft with uh uh is it Dallin Bentley the tight end from Utah
00:52yep I didn't look at him I looked at Markel Bell the tackle from Miami he's just a giant giant
00:58man
00:58I mean he needs to I uh he needs to lose like maybe 15 20 pounds the thing is like
01:05he's not
01:06fat he's not but he's I once wonder if he he I watched a little bit of film on him
01:11uh and I'm
01:12not really overly an expert on offensive lineman film or any film at all for that matter um that's
01:17why I got you here but uh he he lumbers a little bit yeah he's he's uh and he's not
01:27overly he's not
01:29overly he's a little bit hesitant with his hands yeah so a lot of people when they look at 69
01:35they
01:36look at the reach right they look at him you're gonna watch him take his pass sets and I think
01:41his
01:42pass sets are fine like they're not great they're they're Caleb McGarry level pass sets it's it is
01:47what it is but so much of what you talk about is pass pro that actually the the the thing
01:55that I
01:56would struggle with is looking at him getting up to second level in the run game he's slow
02:01in the ability to get think about it you're six foot nine let's just say you're going to block
02:07Cade Nellis right how else all is Cade Nellis six two yeah that's fair so you're going to block
02:13Cade Nellis you're like you're almost having to like hunch your back just to get you know leverage
02:19on the guy right you're having to get down to like his eye level and try to get low pads
02:23and when
02:24you're doing that your feet are moving slower you're not chopping feet like that's that's the
02:28conversation around a dude that big for me you know what's funny is when you watch some of the
02:33offensive linemen you're like well the the kid from uh Arizona State his name I uh I uh
02:42go for it remember his name yeah anyway yeah in a chain in a chain we'll go with that
02:51he looks fast for a big guy like you watch him play and you watch the thing that that was
02:59that that was
03:00eye open to me the more I watched like and you saw more like all 22 and stuff is how
03:04quick some
03:05guys look for their size
03:09Markel Bell
03:11complete opposite like he actually like I watched him and go
03:15and it's it's so unfair man because you're judging these guys and they're much better athletes than me
03:20as I speak so I always feel like weird talking like this it's like telling like when your buddy's
03:25like a four handicap on the golf course and you're not and he's like hey can you tell I'm doing
03:29wrong
03:29you're like oh yeah you know you're doing this with your swing and like why are you asking me I
03:34why am I telling you but I can you can see it yeah and it's like he just looks really
03:39slow when he
03:40moves like that's I watched some of that second him getting to the second level in the run game
03:43you use the word lumber he that's a perfect word and it lumbers you're just like god is he gonna
03:47get
03:48there um and that's the problem he was really good at at Miami at times but like it just looks
03:55like
03:56sometimes it doesn't translate man yeah I agree and look you can have got to me six foot eight is
04:02almost that's it like Jordan Milata six eight the left tackle for the Eagles that played rugby
04:07like he's kind of that's the edge for me like I don't know that you're getting taller than that
04:12really having a lot of success who was my dude from the Ravens oh Alejandro Villanueva no no that was
04:19the Steelers no he played for both but I'm talking about like back in the day um me and Pollock
04:24used
04:25it when Pollock did I did the show Pollock he talked about having to go against him and um Michael
04:30Orr was there for a little bit wasn't Michael Orr this guy played in like the mid-2000s yeah and
04:35he
04:35was yeah he was so good he was he was Jonathan Ogden Jonathan Ogden yep that's exactly yeah and he
04:42is
04:42like a mountain now Villanueva was a big one too Jonathan Ogden at Fresno uh that I don't know but
04:48like I but Villanueva is a perfect example of a mountain of a man yeah whom it's it he moved
04:55well
04:55like he twinkle toes man um and and you look you watch Villanueva Villanueva excuse me and Jonathan
05:01Ogden move on film and you're like I can't can't believe that guy moves that quick I I hit heckin
05:07or
05:08whatever his name is from Arizona State it's Max in a chore in a chore he's 6'8 and he
05:13moves like a
05:156'5 guy yeah he's he moves well sounds silly saying but he moves well the this guy gets a
05:21lot of hate
05:21and a lot of it's warranted there's there's you know penalties and everything else but you know
05:26he's got really good feet like exceptional feet is Juwan Taylor Juwan Taylor does this little backpedal
05:33thing before he gets into his pass set and I don't know where he ended up but man he he's
05:38got
05:38really good feet and that's what I thought of when I saw the in a chore max maxi in a
05:44chore that's what
05:45I saw when I saw his feet still very raw but god he's got light feet man it's beautiful yeah
05:50yeah but
05:53um I can't I can't Juwan Taylor's it just you can't you can't be that's the you know what you
06:01know
06:01Juwan Taylor's equivalent is and I hope he's not listening because I know he still lives in the
06:04city is Juwan Taylor reminds me a lot of Robert Alford extremely talented very good technique at
06:11times but for whatever reason Robert Alford would get it not always but at times the ball would be in
06:20the air and he would just grab because he would he would not trust himself or for whatever reason
06:25the way it looked on him he felt like he wouldn't didn't trust himself and so he would it I
06:30don't want to
06:30use I don't want to put the word panic on him but it that's what it would watch if you
06:34were just
06:34watching film like he would just go grab when he didn't need to because he was so good at trailing
06:39and being in the right place at the right time I think that's what Juwan Taylor does that's like the
06:45like he he get you're right he's got quite he's extremely talented but then he just grabs he's just a
06:51whole or he's a false start and a holding call nightmare um and I think some of that false start
06:57stuff is because he's he's almost too quick with his fate before we were talking about Josh Kendall
07:03kind of reading through the lines of what Ian Cunningham was saying and like potentially
07:06Kyle Pitts could be traded true for draft picks yeah does that change your opinion at all on where
07:13you would draft position when the trade is you're right it definitely depends on when the trade is
07:19right uh I don't know the interesting part of that is if you're you're asking if I would draft a
07:26certain position sooner or later based on how many picks I got right is that kind of if Kyle's not
07:31there anymore you have to draft a replacement for him no I think I think you've got a replacement for
07:38him I think Austin Hooper is show showed last year that he could fill in I think that you want
07:46a
07:47tight end no matter what in this draft if you can get one at the right place the right thing
07:51like right
07:52um if you get this kid from this Bentley kid from Utah he's not a very good blocker he's got
07:58good
07:59size he's 6'4 255 but he's not a great inline blocker he's gonna have to improve on that um
08:05he
08:05doesn't hold up well in in the run game when he's blocking it to to what you would like that's
08:12why he
08:12would be picked I think this is like 231 is what they've got the mock that's yeah it's like sixth
08:17right
08:18what was our guy from from uh Wisconsin last year he took it that that kind of range uh the
08:23jack nelson he was jack nelson was the seventh that's yeah that's what you're that's what you're
08:28talking about in that realm so so um they they say they're not doing it that way though they're saying
08:36that hey it's best best athlete best best player available I tend to believe that you do that
08:44that that I don't tend to believe that teams are honest with you when they say that I don't
08:48believe it's just best player available no matter what I think it's here are our needs and here are
08:54the best players available and he is he is we have him as the let's just throw it out there
09:00let's just
09:00say let's just use it for the second round pick we have him as our 34th best player in the
09:06draft
09:07in a position of need and this is a 48th pick well and and the other way of talking about
09:13it as well
09:13is if they did move on from Kyle Pitts and you're essentially saying you know implying with the
09:18question you have to draft somebody to take over his production I don't think you do because I think
09:23his his position is so unique that we talked about we talked about the fit earlier what this team wants
09:28to be and how many times have we talked about Drake London playing the power slot position and how Kyle
09:33Pitts is and and you know Garrett brought it up earlier I think it was off air
09:36about how the production spiked for Kyle Pitts when Drake London's not there so now all of a sudden
09:41you're paying you know are you paying Drake London north of 30 million dollars on his extension and
09:46then asking Kyle Pitts and him to play what they're both really good at which is that power slot spot
09:51it
09:52all it all goes back to fit and finding somebody that plays the game you want him to at certain
09:56positions and that's why I'm I'm in favor if if you can find the right trade partner that can give
10:02you
10:02the third rounder I'm good well that's why I was confused when the franchise tag to begin with
10:07because you've got you've essentially got 31 million dollars this year in the same position
10:12because Drake's making 16 this year I believe um with the uh fifth year option yeah so you've got 31
10:20million dollars tied up in the same player and there's two of them so that's cool that there's two
10:24of them and some people would say we'll see that's great but you're not going to get both of them
10:29for
10:2931 million dollars 31 million dollars next year no um close you it's just not it's not it's not
10:36feasible if you had to bet money on it you think Kyle Pitts next season's making more or less than
10:42he's making this year like I mean 2027 season does he make it north of 16 million on an average
10:49annual
10:49basis that's the top five average I think he's making right or I think he'll I think he'll be making
10:54more because the cap's going to go up and then the market will be reset and I think the top
11:00I think
11:00he could get top five money because when everything is going well he will put up numbers like a top
11:09five guy the problem is you've got a five-year sample size and he's only done it twice injuries
11:15or not doesn't matter doesn't matter that's remember how much to love throwing to Darren Waller last year
11:19when he came out of nowhere and all of a sudden it was just Darren Waller scoring like two touchdowns
11:23in a
11:23game and you're like what personally I think Kyle Pitts is best suited for the layered passing game
11:30where he's on the run right and he's just kind of I I think he's perfect getting him on the
11:36run
11:36is that what they design two is the best at distributing that way
11:42we'd love to get your questions on this I know Mr. Yo already sent in some questions based off our
11:46Kyle Pitts conversation so we'll get to that with the morning mailbag I know I know I saw it like
11:51we all
11:51know Mr. Yo we all know but we'll answer that at 8 40 you can get your questions in at
