Did Jason Kidd play a bigger role in the Luka trade than we thought? 🤔 Mark Cuban just “let the cat out of the bag,” and the MFFL community is BUZZING!
Transcript
00:00Okay, here's Chief with your sports hodgepodge.
00:02Cuban has let the cat out of the bag right after this.
00:07TJ Houshmanzato, could you just rate my guy here on a scale of 1 to 10?
00:10You don't think rude what you just did?
00:12Who's literally listening to this anyway?
00:13Is there anyone listening to you guys?
00:14Well, it is the home of the Cowboys.
00:15Well, no one, exactly, no one's listening.
00:17I did a radio show when I first got here, and they told me I was fat.
00:20The brisket sando, that is hard to beat.
00:23LeVar, you want to get in on this?
00:24I'm not in on that rude motherfucker.
00:26Oh, he almost cussed.
00:28And they called me the girthquakers.
00:29I'm stupid.
00:30I do like the girthquake.
00:31That's a nice nickname.
00:33Little shock jack stuff.
00:35Your viral sports clip of the day here when it comes to DFW sporting is former Mavs owner
00:42Mark Cuban taking to the Intersections podcast.
00:49Yeah, new podcast, apparently.
00:51Well, they're getting some plays today.
00:54They are blowing up.
00:56Mark Cuban sat down, probably talked about a lot of things.
00:58But this is the 60 seconds that has been clipped and sent into the stratosphere by Mavs fans.
01:05Listen to Mark Cuban talk about the Luka trade.
01:08Who wasn't involved?
01:10Who?
01:11And who was?
01:14Some people got in their feelings.
01:16Can you stop it real quick?
01:18I'm sorry.
01:18I do want to acknowledge, for whatever reason, the Intersections podcast has a weird mic situation.
01:24Yeah.
01:25Yeah.
01:25I checked it on multiple.
01:26Now, it somewhat gets better, but it's going to sound like he's a little bit underwater, and I apologize for
01:31that.
01:32That's why I said it's a new podcast.
01:34Yeah.
01:34You know, the producer, he's got it double-clicked one way or another.
01:37Trying to get it figured out.
01:38Here we go, Cubes.
01:40Some people got in their feelings.
01:43All I'll tell you is that it wasn't Michael Finley, and you can surmise who else was in the room.
01:50But I think there was animosity between our former general manager and some people on Luka's team, his agent, and
02:01some of the people that worked around them.
02:03I don't think they got along.
02:05I think there were issues that, you know, Jake Kidd had coached with Anthony Davis and was close to him,
02:12and Nico was close to AD, right, since he was like 13 years old.
02:18And so I think, you know, you talk about confirmation bias, there was some of that as well.
02:27But, you know, that doesn't justify it for, you know, our coach and our general manager to stand up and
02:35trade our best player.
02:36There it is.
02:38Comes out of the gates hot.
02:39Finley, okay, Michael Finley, who dispelled the beer-taking rumors a couple weeks ago with the KNC Masterpiece,
02:47apparently his hands are clean of this, which bodes well for him moving forward as a maybe full-time member
02:54of that front office.
02:55He's in a GM-type role.
02:57But then he goes as far as to say, we know about Nico, of course, but Jason Kidd, directly involved,
03:03even though he wanted to play Coy.
03:05I found out at the 11th hour.
03:07Yeah.
03:07Cheeks.
03:08I love Mark Cuban being open about this.
03:12You know, at the very beginning of the Nico storyline, he was trying to protect the organization and telling fans
03:17to be quiet and stop chanting, fire Nico.
03:20And, you know, he was trying to keep everything kumbaya.
03:22And then when Nico gets fired, I felt like Mark was trying to get his foothold back in the organization.
03:27But then we heard from Brian's sources that maybe he was sitting at the little kids' table.
03:31That's the analogy that Brian used.
03:33Well, now they've threatened to what?
03:34Cut his ownership to just single percentage points?
03:37Yeah.
03:37So now he's basically saying, okay, if that's how you want to play with me after you screwed everything up
03:42and you're freezing me out, hold my beer and watch this.
03:46You know?
03:47How about, you know, Jason Kidd, you don't want to have my back inside the organization?
03:51Well, those are tire tracks on your back, buddy.
03:54You just got thrown under the bus from the guy who hired you.
03:56Yeah.
03:57And there's a lot of fans that are like, do we believe, Mark?
03:59I do.
04:00I don't really think that he'd have a reason to lie about this.
04:03I get why he kept quiet about it.
04:05Now there's no reason to try and save face for anybody.
04:08It's like, hey, you guys don't want me around?
04:10You're basically threatening to take away ownership stake for me?
04:13And they had that option.
04:15You know, they agreed to that.
04:16He was naive in the contract that he signed to sell the team with the wink-wink and the handshake
04:21deal of remaining governor.
04:23But, you know, it's not contractually enforceable.
04:25I mean, I even saw that coming.
04:27You called it immediately when it happened.
04:30And I think for a lot of us, this is not a surprise.
04:32Now in real time when the trade went down, I was kind of getting suckered into the idea that this
04:38really was just Nico running roughshod.
04:41I thought the same thing.
04:42Jason Kidd's reaction at that press conference looked like he saw a ghost.
04:46Yes.
04:47He seemed like a guy that this totally came out of nowhere and he had no idea.
04:52So either he deserves an Academy Award or, yeah, we all got balls.
04:55I got ball sacked.
04:56Yes, for sure.
04:57Now over the last few months, I think we started to understand a little bit more like, no, Jason Kidd
05:02was definitely in on this.
05:03Now it is very much so out there.
05:05So I'm pretty sure there's at least a handful of Mazz fans that show up to the AAC and know
05:10that Jason Kidd was involved.
05:11But now every single one of them is going to know.
05:14Yes.
05:15You're going to get the chance, man.
05:16What is the backlash here for Kidd now moving forward?
05:21I think the fan base is going to call for him to be fired.
05:23Like handling Nico, is that going to be enough for these folks?
05:26No.
05:27Or no?
05:27No.
05:28Is Jason Kidd about to get the wrath of MFFLs?
05:32Oh, he's getting it brought.
05:33Because they have no other reason to go.
05:35They've got a lone losing streak.
05:36And I like J. Kidd.
05:37Anytime he's made the postseason, he's gotten to the conference finals or better.
05:41He's been really good as a coach.
05:43But I think there is such a connection to Luka.
05:46We've seen it.
05:47And we're already seeing MFFLs rallying the troops for fire kid chants at the AAC.
05:53This is going to happen.
05:54Okay, I'm not doubting that there are some MFFLs who are fired up and passionate about this and are going
06:00to be leading those chants.
06:01I don't know if they're going to get the mass appeal.
06:04I don't know if they're going to get the clown Nico shirts and everything else that came with that.
06:09I think a lot of the fan base wants to move on.
06:12And I think firing Nico gave them that movement where now they're looking towards the future.
06:19And I think the fact that Jason Kidd won a championship and has had success as a head coach.
06:25You had your fall guy in Nico.
06:27It's true.
06:27It's true.
06:28But he's one of the great all-time players in the organization as well.
06:32For me, I've come all the way around on the other way.
06:36That I was a huge believer in Jason Kidd.
06:38I believed for a while that his hands were clean here.
06:40But now that I know they're not clean, I feel like he should go.
06:45And I don't think he is such a great coach that you wouldn't be able to find one as good.
06:50You think Cuban's playing a game of trying to prop Finley up to maybe get the general manager's job?
06:58Yeah, that could make sense.
07:00A little Game of Thrones going on.
07:01And he's propping Finley up like, listen, fan base.
07:05My guy, he had nothing to do with it.
07:07I'll help you get this job.
07:09You bring me back in to the fold.
07:10If that opportunity presents itself, I can see that.
07:13I think they, from talking to people in the organization that I know, there's blood on all their hands.
07:20There's some coaches that weren't buying into it.
07:25But there were front office people.
07:28And I heard Finley was involved in it.
07:32So, I think Mark might be playing a game right now where he's trying to make...
07:38Trying to control the narrative.
07:38Well, he's got...
07:39They've got co-GM guys.
07:42And they're going to have to make a decision on that here at the end of the season.
07:46Do they want to go outside or do they want to bring...
07:48So, maybe he's propping up Finley as kind of a...
07:52Well, hey, listen.
07:53No.
07:53This guy, he toed the line.
07:56He didn't want anything to do with Luka.
07:58Finley, to me, is a guy that absolutely will always have a job.
08:04Because he'll never be...
08:06He'll never be getting the way.
08:07He'll never have an opinion one way or another.
08:10Yeah, I don't know that he's necessarily a guy that you want as the general manager of the Mavericks.
08:14He will survive all kinds of regime change.
08:18Because he's never willing to get dirty.
08:20You know?
08:21He's never willing to be that guy.
08:23So, I think Cuban's trying to pump him up and take stuff away from Jason Kidd here.
08:30To be honest with you.
08:32Yeah, because I think the dirty secret is that Kidd just wants to be in the front office.
08:37Well, I've heard that Kidd's a really good evaluator.
08:41You know, there was talk about him being, like, director of basketball ops.
08:45I don't...
08:46The guys say he doesn't want to be a general manager.
08:49He'd like...
08:49Maybe he does want to be the general manager.
08:52Well, I think the basketball ops position would be something that he would be more interested in.
08:56So, could this be Cuban trying to C-block that?
08:59Trying to undercut him here?
09:00Well, that's what I'm saying.
09:00He's trying to make sure that Finley's positioned well.
09:03Well, but if Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family are smart, they don't listen to Cuban.
09:10I could see that, but I could also just see Cuban being emotional and saying, screw you guys.
09:16I'll tell the dirty secrets if you don't want to include me.
09:19Listen, there's people...
09:20Show respect for what I've done for this organization.
09:22I would say that he didn't have the stomach or the funds to fund a Luka deal.
09:29Yeah.
09:29And so that's why...
09:31That's why he sold it.
09:31Yeah, and he blamed it on his family, basically.
09:35Mm-hmm.
09:36He blamed it on his family for, well, listen, I don't want my kids to be fighting over this,
09:39and, you know...
09:41Yeah.
09:41And good for you.
09:42But, listen, you can't sell something for billions of dollars and come back and have
09:47buyer's remorse and, you know, be that guy.
09:50Just go away.
09:52Just go away.
09:53Go run for political office or go try and do things in pharmaceuticals that you do.
09:59Doing some pretty good work over there.
10:00Yeah.
10:01Don't be the guy that's like, you know, like, well, I'm all bitter now.
10:05I can't believe I sold my...
10:06No, you sold your team because you didn't have the stomach to pay Luka.
10:11That's it.
10:12You didn't have it.
10:13And you got tired of losing money.
10:16That's the...
10:17That's...
10:17It was really good when Mark Cuban bought the team and he'd get fined $500,000 and laugh
10:23about it.
10:23I think he made the same mistake Nico did, though, in not shopping the deal.
10:27Yeah, that's essentially what he said.
10:29He said, I don't regret selling.
10:30I regret who I sold it to.
10:31So I think you're absolutely right.
10:33I think if he could go back, he would handle the sale way differently.
10:36He would probably go ahead and it wouldn't just be the Adelson family.
10:40He'd probably shop it, to your point.
10:42But for a guy who's so smart and well thought out in a lot of places, and that's why he's
10:47on Shark Tank, it's crazy how emotional he gets.
10:50Way too emotional.
10:51Oh, yeah.
10:51And that's been that way forever.
10:53He's probably emotional right now.
10:54Yeah.
10:55And I'm sure J. Kidd's a little bit emotional getting this blasted out there like that.
11:00We'll be interesting.
11:01We'll be interested to see how it all shakes out.
11:02Like I said, when this all went down the pike, Cuban got relegated to the little kid's table
11:08for Thanksgiving.
11:10Now he's kicking and screaming.
11:11Now he's kicking and screaming.
11:12Can he go like that?
11:13That's not going to go well.
11:14Well, the Mavs fall 124-94 last night to the T-Wolves.
11:18Who's our Tanqueray player of the night?
11:19Is it Middleton going 4-10 with 5 turnovers?
11:23Could it be Cooper Flagg on 5-19?
11:27Ooh, that sounds worthy.
11:29With a minus 35 in the plus minus?
11:32Or is it Klay Thompson off the bench giving you a good 1-for-8 in 2 turnovers?
11:37Handful of guys.
11:38Handful of guys last night that are worthy.
11:40I bet for Cooper Flagg for the Tanqueray tanker player of the game.
11:43Okay.
11:44You feel good about that, Cooper Flagg?
11:45I mean, there's a lot of worthy candidates.
11:49I'll vote for Klay Thompson.
11:51Yeah, I'm on for Cooper.
11:53It's definitely not Daniel Gafford who decided to show up.
11:56Again?
11:57This guy.
11:58I know.
11:59I thought they shut him down because of the injuries.
12:01He refuses, man.
12:03He's shooting like 85% from the field over the last month.
12:06He's got to go get his.
12:08Now, if you notice, Anthony Edwards did not start the game last night.
12:12Instead, Mike Conley Jr. had to start for the T-Wolves.
12:16Anthony Edwards, why did you not start versus the Mavs last night?
12:20I was taking the s**t home.
12:22Yeah.
12:22But, yeah, like I said, Mike held it down for me.
12:25Yes, he did.
12:26And we appreciate you, Mike Conley.
12:28Go T-Wolves.
12:28Sometimes it happens, man.
12:30I mean, he says things with a smile on his face.
12:33And, like, he's got this young LeBron type of energy.
12:37But just, like, the actual words are just so abrasive.
12:41I mean, to be fair, like, they were wearing all white last night.
12:46That's not the dangerous game you want to be playing there in front of a bunch of people.
12:50With cameras.
12:51Yeah.
12:51If they were in the dark blues, maybe he gives it a go.
12:54Yeah.
12:54But you got to bow out when you know.
12:56The self-awareness, I appreciate it there.
12:58Little Anthony Edwards.
12:59And it's the Mavs, you know.
13:01Exactly.
13:01So, of course, everything's going to be all right.
13:03It's going to be fine as long as I show up at some point in this game.
