00:05I've got a slight issue with the teabag situation.
00:09What's that?
00:09Well there isn't any.
00:10You drink a lot of tea because if you're into your ready salted crisps...
00:14Oh, I love a ready salted crisps.
00:15Yeah, but they make you very thirsty.
00:17Oh, do they?
00:17Oh, is that the reason why?
00:19Yeah.
00:19That's why all the teabags have mysteriously disappeared.
00:23I think I'm going to try a ready salted crisp diet.
00:26What do you reckon?
00:27If that's all I ate, little Humphrey here may well disappear.
00:32I think you ought to cut down on them, not specialise in them.
00:37And we're off.
00:39Trawling Britain's sheds.
00:41This is absolutely unbelievable.
00:44For the most intriguing?
00:46I have never ever seen one of these.
00:49The most exciting?
00:52Oh ho ho, now that is a naughty car.
00:55The most surprising?
00:57Classic cars.
00:58It is very you.
00:59I love it.
01:01We're going to buy them, fix them up, and sell them for a tidy profit.
01:09Nice little earner.
01:11Wahey!
01:12This is Shed and Buried.
01:13Classic cars.
01:18We're off to Bristol, in our faithful Landy, in search of a classic car.
01:25We're back on the road, Fuzzer.
01:27Okay.
01:28Which is fantastic for a nice little earner.
01:31And it's really great that you've got rid of the Land Rover and got something a bit quicker.
01:37Oh.
01:38No, no.
01:39Listen, I am going to try and get something a little bit different.
01:44What about a Range Rover Classic?
01:46Bit thirsty though.
01:48No.
01:49I don't want a Range Rover Classic.
01:51Right.
01:51Where are we going then?
01:52Come on.
01:53We're going to just outside of Bristol.
01:56We are going to see Robert.
01:59He has a penchant for post-war British saloon cars.
02:04I would expect things like Rovers, Austins, Morrises, all those kinds of things.
02:11Maybe a Vauxhall thrown in there.
02:12Who knows?
02:13Some trinketry, trinketry.
02:14What other people would call it, spare parts.
02:17Yes.
02:18Yeah.
02:18That's right.
02:19Which you will need for your British post-war cars.
02:24Boxes of goodness.
02:25Yeah.
02:25And you know, it's an ongoing hobby.
02:27Every journey is an adventure.
02:29Well, especially in something like this.
02:33Whether we come back with an Austin, a Morris, or a twisted arm and a Range Rover Classic,
02:39who knows?
02:40But, Bristol, here we come.
02:44Now, Rob, tell me, I've never seen one of those, so I can't wait to have a Romage.
02:50But are you into British cars then?
02:52Is that what it is?
02:53Yes.
02:54Yes.
02:54Why was that?
02:55When you were a kid?
02:56When I was a kid, yes.
02:58I've still got my father's MG over there.
03:00Have you?
03:01Yeah.
03:01And my MG Y-type there, that was my first car at university.
03:06Fantastic.
03:07Oh, so that's when you got the bug for them?
03:09Yes.
03:09Yeah?
03:09I used to drive up and down to Sheffield in the Y-type.
03:13Yeah.
03:13No problem at all.
03:14Did you?
03:14Never broke down.
03:15Hey, Rob, so look, we'll have a Romage.
03:17Yeah?
03:17I'll call you in on a few things.
03:19Okay.
03:19But, hopefully, at the end of it, we might have a little bit of a haggle.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Fantastic.
03:24Well, you'll have a look round, anyway.
03:26Thanks, mate.
03:26All right.
03:26And where are we?
03:27I think we'll start right here, actually.
03:28I'll make sure he behaves himself as well.
03:30All right, Rob.
03:30Thanks so much, mate.
03:32All right.
03:32See you later.
03:33I'll disappear.
03:34So, where better to start than this?
03:39Right.
03:40Now, here we have an Austin Atlantic.
03:42Right.
03:42Now, this is a classic case of a British manufacturer making something for a perceived market that
03:50they knew nothing about.
03:52It's not.
03:53It's not.
03:54Released in 1949, the Atlantic was aimed solidly at the US market, with almost half of its production
04:02run heading stateside.
04:04Fewer than 8,000 Atlantics were built, and hardly any survive.
04:10This is a British idea of an American car.
04:13So, they came up with this and put underneath it a 2.6-litre Austin Healey-type engine.
04:19Wow, that's good, isn't it?
04:20So, a straightforward engine.
04:20Yeah, that's great.
04:22But, it's absolutely puny compared to all the American cars.
04:26If you think of these in the early 1950s versus your massive, great big U6s and V8s kind of thing.
04:35Yeah.
04:35This was just like a wheezy old man going down the road and coughing away as it went along.
04:42But, I love it.
04:42Look, it's got that Cyclops middle.
04:44Who thought that would be a good idea?
04:46Well, it's like a pimple on the nose, isn't it?
04:48It is.
04:48It is.
04:49I must say, man, it does row my boat.
04:52Yeah.
04:53I think it's lovely.
04:54It is.
04:54It is.
04:55And you're unlikely to see another one very soon.
04:58Yeah.
04:59I can imagine.
05:00Yeah.
05:00Beautiful.
05:01Hey look, okay, so that is definitely a possibility.
05:03Let's have a good look round the front of this, what's this, a Riley?
05:06It's a Riley RM.
05:07Yeah, go on.
05:08Yeah.
05:09The Riley next door hails from the same period, but it's much more conventional looking
05:15and was solidly aimed at the British market.
05:21Look, mate.
05:21Look at the interior.
05:22I mean, that is quality.
05:24That is old England right there.
05:26It is.
05:27It is.
05:28And that's why we love it.
05:29Yeah.
05:29Hand-built and extremely expensive.
05:32Very difficult to restore, but this one looks like it has been restored.
05:36But look at these little details, like these wind deflectors, rear hinged front doors.
05:42What a beautiful interior.
05:43That's just divine.
05:44Mate, I just, I mean, I could live in there.
05:49Moving outside, there's something very different.
05:52A quintessentially 1970s saloon.
05:57What are you going down there for, eh?
05:59Oh, what a shame.
06:00Oh.
06:00What?
06:01It's immaculate.
06:02Oh, not on the top, yeah, but underneath.
06:05Oh, what a shame.
06:06Hang on a second.
06:07What?
06:08Come on then.
06:09Come out with it then.
06:10What are you thinking?
06:12It's a Marina.
06:16Released in 1971, the Morris Marina stayed in production for the rest of the decade.
06:21Though much reviled today, at the time, it was hugely popular, with more than a million
06:28cars built in a range of colours, from rambling rose to lime twist green.
06:35It's a moment in time.
06:37Yeah.
06:38That looks as though it's been frozen, if you see what I mean.
06:41Yes.
06:41Because from what I can see, the bodywork, and look at the interior, man.
06:46Yeah.
06:46It's mint.
06:47This is a classic that has emerged, in my view.
06:50Why do you not like them?
06:51Well, because, really, what we have here is a Morris Minor with a different body on it.
06:58Yes.
06:58But don't you think it's just so cool?
07:00We could just relive the 70s right there, man.
07:03I know what's happening here.
07:05Hey, look at this Rover 60.
07:06That's quite a rare one, isn't it?
07:08Okay, come on then.
07:09Shall we have a little look?
07:09Come on then.
07:10Okay, now.
07:10Let's move across.
07:11This is the four-cylinder version of the P4 Rover.
07:17Okay, right.
07:18Once it gets up to speed, this would bowl along quite nicely.
07:22I'm sure it would do.
07:22It's just that, I'm sorry, the Marina, because that is so awful, and so ugly, and the colour is heinous,
07:30I utterly love it.
07:32Right, okay, can we make a deal here?
07:35If we do end up having the Marina, you've got to wear some brightly coloured flares.
07:43Oh, I will.
07:44Yeah, I will.
07:44And a matching shirt.
07:45Okay, mate, you've got me.
07:47Alright.
07:49Before I take up Fuzzy's dare, there's plenty more to see.
07:54He's got a miniature caravan.
07:56I think this is early post-war optimism.
08:02A Reliant.
08:05What's that for?
08:07It's a scimitar.
08:08Oh, is it?
08:11And most surprising of all, hiding behind Rob's tyre mountain, a second Atlantic.
08:19You know what I said a bit earlier?
08:21Yeah.
08:21You're not likely to see another one of those in a hurry.
08:24This is unbelievable.
08:24But I have to tell you, mate, I quite like it in black.
08:28This is a lovely thing.
08:30I'd like to know why somebody would have two Austin Atlantic.
08:34Do you know what?
08:35Yeah.
08:35We're going to find out.
08:36Go on.
08:37Rob, come on in, baby.
08:39Yeah.
08:40Now listen.
08:41I've never seen an Austin Atlantic.
08:44I've now seen two.
08:46Fuzz wants to know why.
08:48Well, I've had several other ones as well.
08:52Oh, really?
08:52Yes.
08:52This particular one, when it was new, it went to South Africa.
08:56Oh, right.
08:57Okay.
08:57That's why it's remarkably rust-free and original.
09:00Believe it or not, that will clean up very well, because it's good paint.
09:05Does she run?
09:06She needs a new fuel pump.
09:08Okay.
09:09Okay.
09:09Yeah, she runs fine.
09:11According to some authorities, there are only 65 of them left.
09:16I think about 10 years ago, there was a sale down in Devon, and that chap had about six.
09:23Six of them?
09:23Yeah.
09:24So we had 10% of them.
09:26Really?
09:27I've got two.
09:27How cool is that?
09:29Yeah.
09:29That's amazing.
09:30These are brilliant, though.
09:31Love it.
09:31Hey, mate, thanks for that.
09:32Look, good.
09:33We just might have a quick look at this van, and then we'll come and have a vehicle.
09:35Yeah, you're welcome.
09:35All right.
09:36We'll see you in a bit.
09:37Okay.
09:37All right, mate.
09:39Rob's last British Bulldog is this bijou, tiny-engined Ford Thames van.
09:46This is the sort of van that people used to use on local deliveries in towns and cities
09:52around the UK.
09:53Surely.
09:53For many, many years.
09:55I love it.
09:55What a beautiful little thing.
09:56I love it.
09:57Okay, so look, what have we got here?
09:59I think that Black Atlantic, it looks a little more down at heel.
10:03Yeah.
10:03It needs a couple of things doing to it.
10:04I do like the Rover 60, the Rover P4.
10:08That's a big favourite of mine.
10:10And the Marina.
10:10And the Marina, okay.
10:12I think that's a nice little earner.
10:15It could well be.
10:16At the right price.
10:17Yeah.
10:17Well, that's the thing, isn't it?
10:18So you've got to find somebody who really wants to relive their miserable youth.
10:27I know, just the person.
10:28Do you?
10:29Guy.
10:30Yeah.
10:32Should we go and see Rob?
10:32Yeah, he sang out with you, didn't he?
10:34Yeah, exactly.
10:34Yeah.
10:41Let's just get a sighting lap first, as they say.
10:44Now, the Red Atlantic, tell me about that, price-wise.
10:47I did see one in an auction a couple of months ago.
10:51Yes.
10:51And I think that made about 拢12,000.
10:54But I would say about 拢9,000.
10:57Okay.
10:58All right.
10:58Okay.
10:59Look, moving on then, we have behind you what I think is the most beautiful Marina.
11:05That's the original lime flower colour.
11:07Yeah.
11:08With matching lime flower trim.
11:11How much would that be?
11:12拢6,000.
11:13拢6,000?
11:14Yeah.
11:15All right.
11:15And you won't find another one?
11:16No, no.
11:17No, I hope not.
11:17Now look, talking about another one, let's just talk Black Atlantic in there.
11:21Yeah.
11:21How much would that be?
11:23拢8,000.
11:24And that would be a bargain for one of those.
11:27All right.
11:28Yeah.
11:29Very good engine, clutch and so on is fine.
11:33She just needs the fuel sorted out.
11:35Yeah.
11:35What about 拢7,000?
11:37拢7,500.
11:39Be careful, Henry.
11:54We're down in Bristol with Rob and his terrific collection of British cars.
11:59We've bid 拢7,000 on a rare Austin Atlantic, but he wants 拢7,500.
12:07Would you split the difference at 拢7,250?
12:10Oh, go on then.
12:12All right.
12:13Oh dear.
12:13Okay.
12:14Well done Rob.
12:14I've been robbed.
12:15Yeah you have.
12:16It will go on the stolen list.
12:17It will.
12:17Yeah, you're right.
12:19All right.
12:21All right.
12:21Next day, back at the shed, we show Alan and Skid our swag.
12:28What do you reckon?
12:29I think this has piqued their interest.
12:33Ah ha ha.
12:34Ah ha ha.
12:35Isn't that absolutely marvellous?
12:37Oh, you'll like it then.
12:38Marvellous.
12:39There we are.
12:39They wouldn't have said that with a marina, would they?
12:42No, they wouldn't have.
12:43No, no, no.
12:44It's got a lot of chrome on it, hasn't it?
12:45It's got a lot of chrome.
12:46Well, it could have, yeah.
12:47And it does have that transatlantic styling.
12:50It does.
12:51As a British attempt at Americana, I think this is absolutely.
12:55Same here.
12:56Yeah.
12:57I just love the double logo.
13:02But also the interior is quite luxurious as well.
13:05Yeah.
13:05A bench seat in the front.
13:07Yeah.
13:07Yeah.
13:07Yeah.
13:08It's lovely.
13:09So look, that's the good bit.
13:11The bad bit.
13:12Bumpers.
13:13Yeah.
13:13No brakes.
13:14Yeah.
13:14Doesn't go.
13:15That's right.
13:16And it needs a complete filth clean.
13:19Can I also mention that the windscreen wipers are a bit wrong?
13:22And maybe a little bit of trim work as well?
13:25A little bit of spray glue?
13:26Yes.
13:26And then while we're doing that, we can think about our endeavour,
13:29what we're going to do with it.
13:30Perhaps we should go to an American diner.
13:32It's probably never seen America when it should have done.
13:35Yes.
13:36OK.
13:36Well, look, always on.
13:37Shall we just try and get it going?
13:39Yeah.
13:42First stage, pop the bonnet.
13:46OK.
13:46We're in.
13:48And start the list.
13:51First thing I know is the spark plug lead needs changing.
13:54And, of course, we need a battery in here and fuel supply.
14:01Alan works on the cabling.
14:04This is quite important because it feeds all the electrical pulses from the coil to the
14:07distributor.
14:07Yeah, sure.
14:10Give this a little bit of heat.
14:12And Fuzz uses a blow torch to loosen a carburetor piston.
14:16There we are.
14:18Look at that.
14:19That's freed off.
14:22Before installing a new battery and a temporary fuel tank.
14:29Then I make a well-timed return.
14:33OK.
14:33Give it a go then.
14:34Here we go.
14:34You ready Al?
14:35Yeah.
14:41Holy moly.
14:43This is wonderful news.
14:45In fact, I might do a little jig.
14:50Before we try it out, we need to top up the radiator.
14:55All right, slob it in, mate.
14:57OK.
14:57And then we'll cruise.
14:59As we've got no brakes, it's probably best to just cruise the fields.
15:02What do you think?
15:03Yeah.
15:03I think so.
15:04Yeah, for now.
15:05All right, mate.
15:06I cannot believe how amazing this is until this happens.
15:12The water's pouring out as quick as I'm pouring it in.
15:15What?
15:15Can't feel the tap.
15:16Oh, hold on.
15:17What?
15:18There's a core plug missing.
15:20Oh, no.
15:21Do you know what a core plug is?
15:23One more word from you, pal.
15:25OK, then let me explain if you don't know.
15:27No, I do know.
15:29A core plug.
15:29He's claiming he does know.
15:30Sorry.
15:31A core plug is there to pop out if the engine freezes.
15:35That's great.
15:36Yeah.
15:36That is correct.
15:38Well, yours is gone.
15:40I will acquire what is necessary.
15:42OK.
15:43What are we going to do with that, then?
15:45Put it back in the bottle.
15:46I'll keep it for when we get the core plug.
15:50Is he going up?
15:51Look.
15:52See, he's just walked off again.
15:53Yeah, tail between his legs.
15:54Yeah, that's it.
15:57So, another couple of things to order.
15:59But two days later, the postman's come and the shopping's in.
16:05Fuzz, look.
16:06You got all the bits.
16:07Have they arrived?
16:08I've just mugged Henry off his desk of all his bits.
16:13Without more ado, Fuzz jacks up the car.
16:18And while Guy preps for a new fuel pump, Fuzz gets straight to work on the brakes.
16:26A little bit of a wriggle and there's our drum off and there are our wheel cylinders.
16:34Now, it's these that we're going to replace.
16:38The brake cylinders should move the brake shoes in and out, but the old ones are seized.
16:45I doubt that these would have been saveable.
16:49So, they're in the bin.
16:53And talking of the bin, Skid's proving that some mothers do have them.
17:01Fuzz?
17:01Yeah?
17:02I've just broken the wing mirror.
17:04How have you done that?
17:05I was leaning over trying to get at the fuel pump mount that's pretty inaccessible and lent on it.
17:10Oh, no.
17:11So, which bit's it broken off from?
17:12The ball.
17:13Oh, I want to see.
17:15I've broken the shaft.
17:16Oh, dear.
17:17Don't tell Henry.
17:19So, another job for the list.
17:21But the new brake cylinders are a neat fit.
17:26Back on goes the drum and the wheel itself.
17:31Right.
17:32That's that horrible job finished.
17:34Now, just to bleed the brakes.
17:39Frank Spencer, meanwhile, has stripped off to tackle the popped core plugs.
17:45I've got to lift my skirt to get up here.
17:48Oh, now there's another wing mirror.
17:49I don't want to break that as well.
17:50Yeah, don't bust that one off.
17:53To get at the radiator, he needs to move the dynamo.
17:57It's such a struggle that he has to call in fuzz.
18:04There we go.
18:05There we are.
18:06This has taken me two hours.
18:08Yeah.
18:08I've had to strip down to a sleeve t-shirt because I couldn't get my hand in with a boiler
18:13suit on.
18:13Yeah.
18:14Well, I've just got it out.
18:15It took me two minutes.
18:16Yeah, but I've done all the hard work.
18:20Replacing the missing core plug shouldn't take quite so long.
18:24Skid cleans the hole and then summons fuzz.
18:28There's the core plug that we've been provided.
18:31Now, the idea with the core plug is to put it into the little hole, the little aperture there.
18:38Yeah.
18:38And then tap it with a hammer like that and that just spreads it out.
18:42Flattens it and makes it a bigger circumference.
18:44Yes, exactly that.
18:45And we put a little bit of this on to seal it.
18:47Yes, but not so much it holds it in.
18:49If it freezes, it'll come out again.
18:51Yes, and if the coolant freezes, it needs to go somewhere.
18:55It needs to expand.
18:56Yeah, I'm with you.
18:56And that's what these plugs are for.
18:57They're meant to push out in an emergency.
19:00Yeah.
19:00And clearly, this one's done its job.
19:02Yes.
19:02That's popped out and gone down the road.
19:07Fuzz commandeers a socket head to help fit the new core plug and then hands back to Skid.
19:15I've got to put the dynamo back on.
19:17Yep.
19:17Should be easy now.
19:18Oh, it's very easy getting stuff apart.
19:20It's the getting it back together.
19:22Best of luck, mate.
19:23Yeah, thank you, Fuzz.
19:26In the afternoon, while Jelly works on her suntan, Fuzz continues his overhaul of the brake system.
19:35Hydraulic brakes have been around since the 30s.
19:38Only trouble is, the fluid is easily contaminated with air bubbles, making your brakes spongy.
19:45OK, so are you in, Skid?
19:47I'm in.
19:48What I'd like you to do...
19:49Yes?
19:51...is on and off the foot brake, please.
19:54Up.
19:56Down.
19:59The hard bit is draining the old stuff without letting any air back in.
20:04Fuzz has an ingenious solution.
20:07What I've done is I've screwed a bolt into the end of this tube and then cut a little slit
20:12in the tube.
20:14When I've put the tube over the bleed nipple, what happens is when Skid presses the pedal down, it forces
20:20fluid out of the slit.
20:22But when he takes his foot off the pedal, the slit closes up and so no air flows back in
20:29the other way.
20:29I'm still pumping.
20:33It's a dirty job, but the colour of the fluid shows it's well past its prime.
20:39Not that everyone appreciates it.
20:41The pumping action has sent Jelly Bean to sleep.
20:46Up, up, down, down.
20:51After 20 minutes, Skid's leg has gone to sleep too, but the old liquids all drained out.
21:00i reckon that's us there all right so now we've got stop to go with the go okay mate
21:09so a good day on the mechanicals but still plenty to do we want to head for the diner
21:16next weekend but will it be as easy to sort the bumpers as it was the brakes
21:34me and alan have been away but fuzz and skid have been going great guns on the atlantic
21:43up down mechanically it's almost sorted but cosmetically there's a lot to be desired
21:53can i just draw your attention then we need the hubcaps put on the spats put on yeah also now
21:59the bumpers i mean what we could do is just try burnishing them with a wire wheel do something
22:06anyway get that loose chrome get some of the rust away from there if you re-chrome them you'd lose
22:11money because it won't add the value to the car that the chrome will cost well i've had some bumpers
22:16done recently as you know yeah and they were about 1600 quid wow yeah so i really think that would
22:22negate our profit well look what's a great shame is we can't do the bumpers today because of the
22:27weather i don't mind working out in this a little bit might be slightly uh inclement yes to get your
22:34waterproof so i'll enjoy this oh hang on oh that's a shame hello oh here we go gone again it
22:41looks like
22:42i was having the fun again yeah there's one other thing i want to do as well i want to
22:45sort out the
22:46windscreen wipers so we've got a second to-do list starting with the wipers i'm a bit fussy about my
22:55wipers
22:55now on the car of this age these should just be straight so what i'm going to do i'm going
23:01to take
23:01both wipers off and i'm going to straighten out these little kinks so that they're both pointing
23:07arrow straight as they really ought to be on a car of this age let's just uh get that off
23:16and then
23:17because it's raining i'm going to go inside into a shed in the dry and do the rest of the
23:23job there
23:29oh hold on wait a minute what's going on here i haven't seen this before i've got something to
23:35admit to you yeah the reason why i haven't been around uh swimming through the atlantic yeah oh i
23:43see yeah very good very good it's because i got a phone call and i had to go slightly up
23:48north
23:49to acquire this this motorcycle it's a little rally moped i've never ever seen one and i'll tell
23:56you what john lennon had one of these really i think these are very rare they must be because
24:01i've never seen one i've never seen one while fuzz heats up the wipers to bend them back into shape
24:08me and skid talk high level strategy what are we going to do are we going to do the usual
24:14test
24:14for a spa or are we just going to go i know you you're going to want to go cheap
24:17then it won't
24:18run and then we'll look for a spa you're going to have to pedal because me lungs
24:23fortunately our wipers are steel with no plastic in sight so within a few minutes the kinks are all
24:29straightened out oh have you done that oh yeah look look at that see nice and straight as opposed
24:37to kinky rock hard dead straight that's better it's going to make a massive difference to the top
24:45speed of the car that all right get on with okay do you put those over there and then give
24:49us a pedal
24:49all right so without more ado we co-op fuzz
25:00uh-oh that went really well it might be john lennon's favorite moped but we ain't got a ticket to
25:10ride
25:11but after fuzz plums in a new fuel pipe and skid blow torches clean the dirty spark plug we go
25:20again
25:25yes oh yes look at the whole engine move look at that
25:35as you accelerate the engine goes like that and it's on springs how cool is that but isn't it amazing
25:42mate that runs beautifully isn't it it's beautiful oh how glorious yeah i might just reach for the tea
25:47again back outside fuzz fits some new blades and then reinstalls the kink-free wipers
25:59oh yes there you go you see working windscreen wipers
26:08next on the to-do list prep the bumpers for future painting
26:14what are you going to do with that i'm going to do some of this lighter speckledy stuff all right
26:19and fuzz and i are having a polish off he is going aggressive on the really bad stuff that's there
26:25yeah
26:25i'm going to have a little look over this way and see well obviously get all the loose chrome off
26:29first
26:29okay and then have a just a little a little tease a little uh i have a more aggressive disc
26:35waiting in the wings yeah if fuzz struggles with that well well all i can say is before it starts
26:40running again let the fun begin skid starts gently with a soft mop but it doesn't make much of an
26:50impact hey skid if you're going to paint that you need a keyed surface don't you so you need it
26:59to be
27:00rougher than that so let's get vicious
27:04bruiser fuzz goes in hard with a wire brush is this is this wise well yeah it's all going to
27:13come
27:13off hasn't it yes and follows up with a polishing drill bit this is good for the uh hard to
27:22get at
27:22areas yeah before skid swaps the discs on his angle grinder and goes in even harder it's looking good
27:32so that was my side and now he's doing it i know he's doing all of it yeah
27:50where have they gone
27:54having sloped off for a quick cup of tea fuzz comes back with a bright idea
28:00uh skid yeah i'm just looking underneath here i reckon i can have this bumper off in five minutes
28:04and it's going to save us in the long run i reckon it will do because i'm worried about the
28:09body work
28:10of the car yeah exactly so also if we're going to paint it we need to get in behind yeah
28:14okay come on
28:15them i'll just get them off
28:18oh the bumper is held on by a handful of bolts oh that's perfect there you go
28:26within five minutes the whole thing is off in easy to manage pieces
28:33what's great now is we could take all this into the shed yeah who cares about the rain
28:41next day it's still showering but the good news is fuzz has got the rear bumpers off as well
28:47and alan's back from a brief excursion
28:52i must say while i've been away i've done a lot of work core plugs have gone in brakes yeah
28:56brakes
28:57have done sorted the fuel pump yeah and all you've done broke the mirror yeah and you've gone to
29:01cornwall for your holiday wow it's very nice oh it's lovely to have you back mate okay pedal up with
29:05the wing mirror up right you over here with the whole team in town we get really busy skid grinds
29:16off the rust and crud from the bumpers fuzz fits the new fuel pump there we go nice and secure
29:25excellent
29:28and alan does a repair shop on the mirror
29:33what i've done i've removed the three screws to take this clamp off the back
29:37this will reveal the little pivot inside this is what's broken off the car i can drill a hole in
29:41there and thread it screw that screw into there like that and screw that back into the car lock
29:46it up tight and it should work as long as skid doesn't lean on it and break it again we'll
29:50be in business
29:52the pivot's made from mazac a metal alloy that was popular in the 1940s
29:58it's brittle so it requires careful handling
30:01when you heat it up it runs very very fluid like water so you can make very intricate shapes
30:06with it by putting it into molds but one of its drawbacks is it's very brittle so it snaps easily
30:12once he's drilled a hole then alan uses a tapping tool to create a new screw thread
30:18look at that that's just perfect
30:22next stage is to drill a matching hole and tap a matching thread into the car's fixing point
30:29that's the thread cut in there so now this should hopefully screw on nicely
30:34alan reattaches the gloss and we have a fully functioning fully pivoting wing mirror
30:41there we go just perfect
30:48skid meanwhile has been doing sterling work on the bumpers let's have a look
30:54there's that one and that was quite rusty in the middle look i've gone through to the nickel
30:57but i quite like that this one's really nice look that's all right again mate this is just a
31:04transformation and this was the really scabby one yeah that was horrendous i love the patina on it
31:11there's more work to do but even in their raw state they look great
31:16anyone who's the next owner of this may well decide that they want to chrome it yeah but in the
31:22meantime we can preserve them with a little bit of lacquer and i think your linishing looks beautiful
31:30but if it's one step forward on the bumpers it's one step backwards on the steering
31:36al just mentioned that i needed to straighten up the the wheels at the front here so what i've found
31:44i've just had a look underneath and it looks like somebody has towed this car using this track rod
31:52they're absolutely bananered so we're going to have to take that off and straighten it out
31:59it's not crash damage anyway it's been the wrong way this has been towed out of somewhere oh right
32:03and but and we've bent the uh hold on i don't think have you towed this anyway i just i've
32:10got
32:10to go in here for a squirt say you know genuinely i don't think it is me i don't think
32:15it is me
32:18i'll keep stum about the towing but at least the track rod is easy to remove
32:26yeah somebody has really really put some effort into moving this car
32:31yeah when it had seized brakes these brakes yeah
32:33of course maybe frank spencer's got a twin
32:42but once it's been blown bent and banged into shape
32:48the track rod is as good as new
32:52that's turned out really well right it's cooling down now i'll go and give it a final quench
33:02the day finishes with skid spraying a coat of lacquer on the bumpers
33:07and fuzz checking that the new fuel pump is running sweetly
33:14cool i think we should call that a job well done yeah yeah definitely excellent right
33:23the plan is to take our atlantic to an all-american diner but bearing in mind we haven't even managed
33:31to get it up me drive will it survive its first road test
33:48we had a great day yesterday but there's still plenty to do before we take our atlantic for a date
33:55at the diner there we go just perfect starting with our linished and lacquered bumpers
34:05let's fit these and then we've got to put the spats on we've got to put the hubcaps on
34:10what else we've got to do all of the finishing items
34:16while me and alan do a bit of polishing
34:20i think we've got a good option here in the dry haven't we so yeah
34:25fuzz and skid refit the bumpers the wheel hubs
34:33and finally those spats
34:38until by the end of the day our atlantic's ready for a day out in nearby bampton
34:44we're first of all going to have a yee-haw milkshake yeah and then we're going to go and play
34:52a very
34:53very british but quintessentially oxfordshire a local uh delicacy which is the sport of aunt sally
35:02what that's that exactly so we're going to experience both cultures in this yeah excellent
35:08we are going to make bampton great again hey let's go fantastic
35:19and off she goes
35:22bampton's just a couple of miles away so it's perfect for our first shakedown run
35:34i think it's running quite nicely don't you i'm really really well i think it's as smooth as silt
35:42tell you what the majority of dials seem to be working yeah they do don't they yeah and there are
35:48a plethora of ash receptacles oh i know mate yeah everybody can smoke everywhere dad grandma grandad
35:56the kids all the kids everywhere everywhere you look
36:02the brakes are still bedding in and the gears are a little graunchy
36:06but for a 70 year old car it's amazing and in a lot better nick than the local roads
36:16do you feel like it oh pothole yes feel these bits wait for it there's another one
36:2520 minutes and four potholes later we arrive at culture hit number one milkshakes at the drive-in
36:37can i have please a strawberry milkshake please i'll have the same first okay two strawberry milkshakes
36:46sorry two chocolate oreos yeah yeah two chocolate oreos as well please wonderful that'll be 24 pounds
36:5424 pounds at the second window when the atlantic first appeared in 1949 the average weekly wage
37:02was six pounds and 14 shillings that's progress lovely little movie you've got there oh thank you
37:09very much it's it is actually for sale is it it is yeah are you interested i'm glad you could
37:14be i don't
37:15out of the budget or not though it's surprisingly reassuringly low price still nine thousand pounds
37:22to you i don't like that it's the insurance i'm worried about it's very cheap classic
37:29oh there we go strawberry with a top on it
37:33even if we haven't quite made a sale milkshakes at the diner is just what this car was supposed to
37:40be
37:40about there we are fantastic this is great there we are thanks mate okay hold on okay thank you very
37:47much thank you very much thank you very much thanks mate cheers fantastic
37:59hey so look man here we've got the austin atlantic in front of a quintessentially american sign
38:08here in oxfordshire that can't be bad can it no hey no i think it looks the part i think
38:15the neon lights
38:17work very well with this car anyway cheers cheers lads now look cheers we've experienced america
38:24yes now it's time to experience regional oxfordshire nice
38:32time for a hat change and a step change as we move back two centuries to a game that's been
38:39played
38:39since the english civil war so from one culture to the next we are now going to go to the
38:46plough in
38:47alviscut yeah right where we are going to experience uh britain at its finest and so we are going to
38:55go and
38:55play on sally from milkshakes to sticks tom the sound that he plays this he's in a team so you
39:13know how
39:14to do this yeah go on then you're having to go okay so look that is what that's a doll
39:20is that aunt sally
39:22is that the is that the thing that yeah that is the aunt sally all right okay it's called a
39:27doll
39:27it's called a doll yeah right all right and that goes on the pole up the end there
39:32then you've got to throw these blimey they're quite heavy oh they are yes
39:36do you throw underarm underarm what happens if you hit the stick and not the doll doesn't count
39:43so game on i think we should play front seats play back seats okay okay so you two are a
39:51team yeah
39:51and me and fuzz are a team and we're both throwing three each there you go right three for you
39:57here
39:57we go back seater yeah go on mate oh no oh dear not too far taking it too far before
40:03we go any
40:03further what happens if it bounces off that's okay don't think that counts okay go on then chuck two
40:11oh oh did that count no hang on hang on no i want to replay off the camera no no
40:18no i think that
40:19don't come over all var tom is our adjudicator tommy hit the stem he hit the iron the iron
40:26hit the iron all right so you've got nothing so far i was surprised at that same here remarkably good
40:33oh oh that's close that was close man that was really close yeah well i've ended up with zero
40:39at the end of the day here we go oh it's a left hooker yeah here we go it is
40:45difficult isn't it
40:47oh that was close another coat of varnish and that would have done it lovely technique
40:56oh split the difference i could see why people get into this
41:04as for our teammates first alan
41:09oh and then fuzz yes yes that was pretty damn good he's done it first hit
41:19that is what you call beginner's luck so i put the thing back on yeah yeah he might just do
41:26it again
41:26again our second attempts are predictably oh useless unpredictable that's it oh oh lucky
41:39that's good oh a bit of a curve on there
41:46and when sound man tommy steps up to the plate
42:00today has been a great success we've experienced a little bit of americana yeah yeah and now we've
42:06experienced the quintessential local british uh excitement of aunt sally that's great i did find
42:13that really good fun and did we enjoy the vehicle yes it ran perfectly yeah the car's gone faultlessly
42:19it's fantastic nice and smooth in the back isn't it it's wronged away i think they're wronged away yeah
42:23hey but i wonder how much chopper roy is going to value it at
42:27next day in the midst of a fittingly transatlantic storm we find out
42:38i reckon they're pretty rare chops they are there's more convertibles about than our top oh is there
42:44yeah a lot more is there oh there you go i told you it was rare yes it is a
42:49cool looking thing for its age thanks mate what about the car what do you reckon um allowing for
42:56a bit of crow nine and a half ish now do the chrome when you're up around 12 13. so
43:02we're about 600
43:03700 quid in on brake calipers and all that kind of caper aren't we yeah that's the other thing it's
43:08had all the servos done all four on the front the two on the rear straight on the road then
43:12really
43:12yeah no it is doing a new master cylinder the brakes are new well let's call worst case scenario
43:20nine and a half we're in for about eight it was seven and a quarter i think yeah seven 250
43:26i was
43:27told yeah plus we've done about six seven hundred quid let's call it eight grand yeah well fifteen
43:34hundred quid yeah easy scenario easy not bad baby not bad nice little earner it certainly is yeah
43:42yeah come on what do you reckon then
43:46so
