Have our eggs gotten smaller year on year? Are we no longer getting as much? And should we be putting all our eggs into one basket when it comes to our choice of chocolate?

Etholle Reynolds reports.

00:00As the Easter season rolls around, so does the same question.
00:04Are Easter eggs getting smaller?
00:06No, I think they're still pretty big.
00:09I think they have got smaller.
00:12I think they've definitely gotten smaller.
00:14Because they used to be quite big and you used to get a few packets of chocolate or whatever with
00:21it.
00:21So you used to get two packets of chocolate.
00:24They're the same size but so much more expensive so it's not even worth it to get them in the
00:29end.
00:29And now you get like really small boxes where you just get an egg, I think.
00:34I don't know, that's what it looks like.
00:35But they've definitely got much smaller and they used to come in massive boxes.
00:39Many feel they've seen a decrease in size but an increase in price.
00:44And this may have something to do with shrinkflation.
00:47Over the past year, one brand went from 231 grams to just 194.
00:54But increased in price from £6 to £7.
00:57And although many are worried about their Easter eggs getting smaller, it actually could be a part of a larger
01:03problem that starts right from the cocoa beans itself.
01:07Chocolate has become increasingly expensive due to things like extreme weather and poor harvests where the cocoa beans are.
01:14And this can impact even the most local chocolatiers.
01:18The last two years is when it's been its biggest challenge.
01:19For a long time before that it was actually quite stable really.
01:22The cocoa price was fairly stable.
01:25But in the last two years it's probably the most volatile that we've ever seen it.
01:29And it's caused a lot of issues with availability and pricing obviously of chocolate and then trying to sort of
01:36source the right to chocolate at the right price has been one of our biggest challenges.
01:40But yes, it feels at the moment we're starting to be in a better position.
01:44It's certainly coming down to a more manageable level and seems to be less volatile.
01:48But I think that's been the biggest issue over the last two years is the volatility of it.
01:52We've seen huge increases and huge drops in cocoa price in a matter of days.
01:58So as Easter eggs are getting smaller, this may be a part of a larger issue affecting the whole world.
