00:00The number of migrants getting citizenship in the EU is booming, which countries are handing out the most passports.
00:10Nearly 1.2 million people got citizenship in their EU country of residence in 2024.
00:16That's a 54% rise in just a decade.
00:20Syrians are the leading group, with over 100,000 passports issued.
00:25Moroccans come in second with 97,000, followed by Albanians with 48,000.
00:32The vast majority of those who get an EU country passport, 88%, came from outside the bloc.
00:39However, there's a significant 10% share of citizenships awarded to other EU nationals who moved to another member state.
00:48Romanians make up the biggest group in this category, with about 40,000 gaining citizenship in other EU countries.
00:55Looking at who grants the most citizenships, Germany leads by far, with nearly 300,000 in 2024, a quarter of
01:04the EU's total.
01:06Spain comes next with around 250,000, followed by Italy with 217,000.
01:14However, zooming in, Sweden has the highest naturalization rate, with 7.5 per 100 non-national residents.
01:22Then comes Italy with 4.1, followed by Spain and the Netherlands with 3.9.
