00:00Which EU countries are the most and the least connected with nature?
00:08Croatia and Bulgaria are the only EU nations in the top 10 of the countries most connected
00:13with nature across the world. By contrast, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands are the
00:17EU countries that are the least nature-connected, putting them towards the end of the list.
00:22This is according to a research article that analyzed more than 56,000 people across 61
00:27countries, which looks at how attitudes towards nature are shaped by social, economic,
00:32geographical and cultural factors. People with higher levels of nature-connectedness
00:37enjoy improved well-being and are more likely to act in environmentally friendly ways.
00:42On the other hand, low levels of nature-connectedness have been identified as one of the three major
00:47underlying causes of biodiversity loss alongside inequality and the prioritization of individual
00:53material gains. Factors like the levels of urbanization, mean income and internet used
00:58are linked to a lack of connection with nature. Forests and other wooded land cover around 40%
01:04of the European land surface, while more than 26% of EU land is designated as a protected area.
01:10However, there is a decline in forest biodiversity across the continent,
01:14with forestry activities as a major driver. Last month, European lawmakers rejected a draft law
01:20to monitor and report on forest health, which would mandate EU countries to collect data
01:24on forestry conditions and enable preparedness against forest fires across the block.
