00:02Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal care.
00:09And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:14His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:17All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:19...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:23There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:26Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:29Not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it?
00:31I know.
00:32...now has two practices.
00:34I don't want to let him go.
00:36One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:42Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:45And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:48That's a Hollywood smile.
00:49...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:55I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57The teams are united...
01:00Oh!
01:01...and always determined to hit their target.
01:04Yay!
01:06Yes!
01:07As they help animals of all shapes...
01:10It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:12...sizes...
01:13Hello, gorgeous!
01:14...types...
01:15Catch!
01:16...and temperaments.
01:18No, don't be nasty.
01:19It's definitely not glamorous.
01:22Cut that mucus out.
01:23But it's varied.
01:24So we've actually found gold, literally found gold.
01:27It's rarely easy.
01:28You've won Mr. Wet t-shirt.
01:30But they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:33It's alive!
01:34Treating all creatures...
01:35It's moving!
01:36I can't believe it!
01:38...great...
01:40You're all right, little bird.
01:41...and small.
01:42How are we happening?
01:43Yay!
01:55Yorkshire's highways and byways take many forms.
02:00Winding country lanes between dry stone walls.
02:05Those that loyally follow the path of the river.
02:12Or rise suddenly to skies of heather.
02:17Eternal drovers' roads.
02:20Tracks dating back centuries.
02:23For descendants of the livestock that first travelled these routes.
02:28Crossings feel safe.
02:31As if this land is somehow theirs by ancient right.
02:36But for many pet owners, the dangers of the road are a constant fear.
02:43A fear that's just become reality for Michael,
02:46who's rushed to the practice in Kirby Moorside
02:48with his 14-month-old Springer Spaniel, Brutus.
02:52The car went right over him.
02:54I thought he was brown bread.
02:55But when we looked, he'd done a runner.
02:59And he was halfway down a grass field.
03:02Which was a bit of a relief.
03:04At least he wasn't dead.
03:08I don't want to lose him.
03:11He's got a cut on one leg.
03:13He is limping a bit.
03:14He was whimpering and yelping a lot coming down in the car.
03:19Although Brutus has survived the accident for now,
03:23Michael wants Peter to make sure there are no issues that aren't visible.
03:26He's late to come through.
03:30Oh, dear.
03:31He's looking a bit sorry for himself.
03:32Isn't he just?
03:33He's lucky to be alive, actually.
03:35I think we'll have him up, please.
03:39Good boy.
03:40You're all right.
03:41We had a lot of marming.
03:43That's good.
03:44Nice pink colour, aren't you?
03:46Check his chest.
03:48See if there's any bleeding into his chest.
03:50Just check your heart rate.
03:54How long ago is it since it happened?
03:57It came straight down?
03:57An hour.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Lungs are clear.
04:02It's very steady and his pulse is strong.
04:05He's got a gash on his front leg.
04:06Yeah.
04:07It's just how I feel down those ribs.
04:10I think he's been remarkably lucky.
04:13It's a miracle, isn't it?
04:13It is a miracle.
04:14Yeah, it is.
04:15The other thing, of course, is the bladder.
04:17Is his bladder intact and this sort of thing?
04:19Yeah.
04:20There's some swelling in his abdominal muscles there.
04:23And I think it looks, it feels to me as if the wheel has gone over this part rather than
04:28his chest.
04:29Right.
04:30I really did think he was a goner.
04:32Yeah, he's a fairly laid-back character, aren't you, beauties?
04:35Do you want me to leave him?
04:37Yeah.
04:37I'll give you a ring.
04:38Are you going to stay with Uncle Peter?
04:39And we'll get your soggy out.
04:42Are you going to come too?
04:44Good boy.
04:46Good boy.
04:48Peter knows he has to get to the bottom of things quickly.
04:51Good boy.
04:53He's a brave lad.
04:55And nurse Chloe has come straight over to help.
04:57Good boy.
04:59Well done, Brutus.
05:01What do you want to do first?
05:02Do you want to ultrasound scan him?
05:03I want to ultrasound him first.
05:04Yeah.
05:04What I'm going to do is scan his abdomen and make sure everything's as it should be in there.
05:11I'm not certain about his bladder, so that's something I need to check.
05:15Right, let's have a look.
05:18OK, Chloe?
05:19Yeah, absolutely fine.
05:21Heart rate's nice and steady now.
05:23Good.
05:25Nice definition of intestines there.
05:30They're very clear.
05:31If you get blood in there, then they wouldn't show as clearly as that.
05:36That liver's looking pretty healthy.
05:39Nice edge to it there.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Looking quite healthy.
05:44Just going to check his bladder now.
05:49There we are.
05:51There's his bladder.
05:55There's not a proper catheter in.
05:57And just check that he hasn't got blood in his bladder.
06:02It could signify that he's got kidney damage.
06:06It could mean that his bladder's traumatised and bled.
06:20It's very difficult.
06:21While Brutus ran into trouble on the road with a car,
06:25it was an off-road mountain bike accident
06:29that left Julian needing medical attention not too long ago.
06:33Look, that's my knee.
06:35Oh.
06:37And it seems he might not have learnt his lesson.
06:40Crashed into a tree yesterday.
06:43to the frustration of nurse Lucy I thought you were taking it easy well I was but I was going
06:49quite fast and it was nice and good crashing to a tree and I was going a bit too I
06:54was going a bit
06:55too fast it was a narrow track at the bottom with trees on either side that were encroaching on the
07:00path and I could squeeze that I did squeeze through but I wobbled a bit if you have to go
07:04back to your surgeon and tell him that you've done your legging again for the same thing he's
07:09not going to be very happy is it no he won't be very happy but it did say I was
07:13capable of doing
07:15pretty much most things we're not crashing into trays but there are there are only little trees
07:21so they're more like saplings and trees pressing to a bush I went a bit mad when I got home
07:26and
07:27to the tree when new life is expected on a farm there are often bumps in the road
07:40and the journey can be even more tense with rare breeds in Huddersfield Shona's had a call about a
07:49pregnant pedigree heifer I'm going to go see Jess with one of her white parker cows it's a first
07:56time carver quite an experienced farmer she knows what she's doing she's carved quite a few cows so
08:02just trying to get there as quickly as possible because things aren't progressing as they normally would
08:07it's called Tilly I've had since birth so she's just coming up three although Tilly isn't white she is a
08:17pedigree white park there are only 750 breeding females in the world so every carp is special and precious
08:38she's very slack and then she started pushing at about nine o'clock last night okay but it didn't
08:45progress any further okay and now since I've been down since sixes she hasn't pushed at all right okay
08:52come on Tilly good girl so I haven't touched her at all she was down on her side pushing about
09:09every
09:09five minutes and it's just not progressed from there
09:18good girl so there was just a little bit of like a band on the cervix when I went in
09:23but there is a
09:25little bit of room now there's a foot there there's a nose there their waters haven't broken there's been
09:35nothing like nothing like that good girlie you just have to feel without a glove because I can't feel
09:43what isn't going on there so I'm just trying to establish whether she's in labour and it's twisted
09:50or whether she's not actually gone into labour yet she's been pushing but not any really back arching
09:58tail up pushing because that's why I've left it but it's you know nine hours is too long to be
10:05pushing
10:06the cervix isn't open I'm trying to establish whether that I think there's a bit of a twist there is
10:10a bit
10:11of twist actually I think run is it alive it's not moved yet coming up right has the car caused
10:25Brutus
10:25serious injury these wounds can be absolutely lethal the position of it does worry me Julian
10:33doesn't know what's hit Rodney's lab it's in our place for an injury like that isn't it yes and a
10:39giant tortoise the hail from the land of the Sahara it's a bit different to Huddersfield gives Matt a
10:45big shock wow
10:54at the practice in Kirby moorside Peter and Chloe are examining young springer spaniel Brutus right
11:03who's been hit by a car oh yes that's exactly what we wanted indeed yeah you're in there which means
11:13his blood is intact overtly there's no evidence of blood there so that's a major concern we can rule
11:21out we can tick off so that's good all right I'm just gonna flick the light up we're just going
11:26to
11:26x-rays left for because this is the one to us particularly concerned about good boy that's the
11:43blood tissue damage here certainly everything is in place so I think Brutus has been a very lucky boy
11:51Brutus may have been lucky so far right shall we take him to but he's not out of the woods
11:56just yet
11:58these wounds such as these appear quite small they can be absolutely lethal sometimes that could
12:05potentially cause a very nasty septic arthritis so we're going to flush it out now and clean it up
12:13it looks pretty insignificant but the position of it does worry me I'll just put an odd stitch in there
12:22I'm gonna have to move pretty quickly Brutus is now we're coming around from his slumber good lad
12:30good lad just freshening the edges of the wound to get a nice a nice healing process great that looks
12:41better that's better indeed Brutus has got away incredibly lightly if he was a cat you'd say use
12:47support of his nine lives good right after a traumatic day and initially fearing the worst
12:56Michael's back with his wife Shirley look who's here look who's come for you hey his chest is and
13:06heart are absolutely fine and I know I've said it but how lucky has he been I thought I'd be
13:11digging a
13:11hole I really did yes yeah so what do you want some antibiotics and here's some good old painkillers
13:17thanks ever so much any problems give us a shout we will and uh all the best thank you bye
13:22-bye
13:26in you go come on a phenomenal relief really well they're good vets here I mean they're just spot on
13:32phenomenal result yeah and he might have learned a lesson as well
13:45near Huddersfield I'm feeling the walls of the vagina Shona's trying to establish if Jessie's
13:53pedigree heifer Tilly is in labor the main thing we need to decide is whether we're going to do a
13:58cesarean or not isn't it yeah and if Tilly's unborn calf is in danger she is quite swollen in there
14:05like she's quite fluidy yeah so and she's not due till next Saturday yeah and but she is she is
14:13slackened off and everything so it's weird that she was straining that's my only issue sweating
14:21temperature's all right it's very slightly up but she's a little bit stressed isn't she
14:24good girlie I can feel the end of the cervix and that's completely shut there's no twist yeah I'm
14:31just concerned that she's been migged out down there she was sitting most of yesterday yeah do
14:38you want to see her walking yeah yeah right so they come up here and show everybody how you can
14:43walk
14:43come on then we're going to walk oh you're stuffily aren't you so I definitely wouldn't do a cesarean
14:51at this point and she's definitely not actively carving at this point she's lifting her tail she's
14:57definitely not far off is she by the looks of her I'll tell you what I could do actually is
15:02rectally
15:02feel it and make sure it feels all right rectally because when I first put my hand in I said
15:06I can
15:06feel it's hair I was feeling it through the vaginal walls oh golly because the cervix isn't open I
15:16can't feel right into where the calf is I can't feel into the uterus so what I'm doing is going
15:21rectally and then I can feel the uterus below me and so I'm feeling if anything feels abnormal so
15:27there should be quite a bit of fluid around the calf which there is there's definitely a head there it
15:34doesn't feel massive so maybe there's two yeah her grandmother is in the end bay over there she had
15:40twins so Millie and Molly were her twins and then Millie had Tilly steady there have already been
15:50some new arrivals here recently this is Bonnie and this is Bonnie's baby Bonnie's baby with Jess
15:59doing her bit for the future of this historic breed there's only 750 breeding females in the world
16:06and supposedly the first British breed of cattle that is really cute James the first went hunting in
16:14Lancashire and he shot a white park with his bow and arrow and apparently he got fed it that night
16:21and he enjoyed it so much he knighted it sir Lloyd that's why we get the name sir Lloyd isn't
16:27it yeah
16:28they're so pretty can you come oh girl everything seems okay I know that Tilly's in very good hands
16:36with Jess so she will keep a very close eye on her she'll let me know if anything's going on
16:40I do
16:41think there's twins in there so that'll be exciting to see and hopefully they don't get too tangled up
16:45and just come out nicely one after the other but obviously I'm I'm here I'm on hand if Jess needs
16:50and help carving them across Yorkshire Julian's been on hand for his next client for many years today I'm
17:07heading to see an old friend of mine a farmer called Rodney who's got a problem with one of his
17:13young
17:13sheep you ready for your tea Rodney's sheep are his pride and joy they're all comical and they're all
17:22different characters and different you know they're all part of family real and it's one of the newest
17:29family members two-month-old Anna who's causing concern one of her eyes just ain't right she's got
17:38like a little mark or something and she were holding her head to one side so I thought we'd better
17:45be letting him have a look and see what he thinks Julian coming to look at you make you better
17:51hi Julian
17:53alright so how's this lamb then but poorly high do you think yeah so what did it look like to
17:59start
18:06with this is a cataract the white bit there that silvery bit is actually the lens yeah so the lens
18:12obviously should be totally see-through in this lamb it's gone all smoky so that'll probably be why
18:18its head was lopsided because he was trying to he wouldn't be able to see through it so it's very
18:24unusual in a sheep sometimes see them in calves and sometimes in alpacas I don't think I've ever
18:29seen her in a sheep before basically there's nothing that we can really do about it she'll
18:35cope sheep are good at bidding a flock because they they get security from the rest of the flock
18:41so you'll find that she'll probably always want to be near other sheep when she gets older while
18:48Julian knows Anna will be okay a vet on a busy farm like Rodney's so it's a bit of a
18:53way to
18:54journey then maybe I feel a bit like I never took to look at in his knee is familiar with
19:00the phrase
19:00while you're here so what's wrong with this one then he's got a rump on his knee so I thought
19:07you
19:07could have a look while we were here feels a bit odd doesn't it yeah could he have been knocked
19:20by
19:20somebody oh yeah because they're always waiting like you know it's just an odd place for an injury
19:25like that isn't it yes he bends it all right yeah I'm gonna do with that I wonder what do
19:37you think
19:37it's just a knock I don't know what that is at the animal hospital in Huddersfield in regarding which
19:54you know me Jake has arrived from the local zoo with Bernie to see Matt Bernie is a sulcata tortoise
20:01now
20:02these sulcata tortoises it can be massive we're concerned that Bernie has got some eggs that are
20:08being passed and retained eggs can be really problematic morning Jake all right this is Bernie
20:16hey come on through let's see what we can do has she had eggs before Jake yes yeah and it's
20:24never been a
20:24problem no no so what's the story so usually she's annoying keepers when we're cleaning her so I'm moving
20:31about the whole enclosure but she's sticking to one spot the whole day and not moving at all and how
20:37long has she been there doing this far a few weeks now right okay what I'll do is I'll borrow
20:43her get an
20:44x-rayed see what's going on there get a blood sample as well check calcium levels send them off all
20:48right yeah come on you so we're 12.3 kg I think hopefully let's see is the boom and x
21:03-ray machine
21:03going to be big enough and after tonight we might have finished in two parts nurse Becky is helping
21:08Matt oh no she'll be all right and while Bernie is not her first tortoise she feels a little in
21:15the dark I've done a couple with Matt and on this size though so it's a first for me she's
21:22beautiful
21:22the Egyptian sulkata tortoises so the hail from the land of the Sahara it's a bit different to
21:28Huddersfield all right there we go ready all right moment of truth
21:45wow it's a lot of eggs no wonder she's shuffling around like she needs to lay we've got one two
21:53three four five six seven eight nine ten eggs knocking around in there so Bernie is pregnant with
22:00ten eggs oh she's a big girl those eggs have clearly got a shell and they're ready to be laid
22:08and because
22:09she's not getting on with the job if they were to stay in there they can cause problems infections
22:14worst case scenario is they would have to surgically remove those eggs which would mean sawing into that
22:20shell which is by no means a simple undertaking coming up is the spaniel hit by a car on the
22:33road to
22:33recovery I was quite concerned that he might have abdominal damage that some of his body organs may
22:39have been squashed and Julian's going off-road we go up up up and then down down down and that's
22:46the best
22:47bit for a fearsome mountain bike challenge this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and carries
22:52risks personal injury death etc etc can i cross that bit out in west yorkshire at rodney's sheep farm
23:09I mean ain't limping around no after being called out to look at another lamb's cloudy eye so I don't
23:17think it's a joint infection or a joint swelling as such Julian's now examining a mysterious lump
23:24on Tywin the top's knee instinctively as vets if there's something that we don't know what it is
23:30what we like to do is stick a needle in and see what comes out of it it could be
23:36an abscess it has
23:39that feeling sort of slightly soft and squidgy I think we'll do that so this part of the leg is
23:46the same as our wrists so it could have been a bang from another sheep because it's on the outside
23:52but
23:52it could be full of pus which is why I'm going to stick a needle in it won't hurt this
23:57this goes in
23:58and then hopefully something comes out oh look it's like treacle having just said it's probably
24:08not connected with a joint it might be connected with a joint because that does look fluidy like
24:15it could be a joint fluid but it's it's quite gloopy I think this is bursitis so this is a
24:22bit like
24:24a condition that people get called housemaid knee come on I'll take it out now so look I'm gonna
24:30take it out and put your foot down so that should have relieved the pressure quite a lot looks like
24:39normal now yeah can let him go now if you want actually we don't need to do anything else so
24:45a
24:45bursa is like a mini cushion underneath the tendon and it makes it run smoothly and if that gets
24:51banged or knocked it swells up and it becomes like that swollen sometimes quite painful and that now it's
24:59drained should go a long way to come yeah coming back I've not seen a housemaid knee in a sheep
25:05or so
25:06good good right all right we're done a few weeks later now then you want some tea it's feeding time
25:15for Anna whose eye problem Julian diagnosed as a cataract Anna's doing very well she's still
25:22sticking with her mama with all the sheep to show her how to go on and so they can adapt
25:26it's like
25:27what else person that loves the sight of the lie or something like that it's life we've just got to
25:32get
25:32you on weeks and Tywin's knee is looking good so today with the help of his son Matthew Rodney needs
25:40to get Tywin's feet in good shape to help ensure a productive lambing season if they don't have the
25:51feet right when it comes to topping time they they can't do the job properly basically because they
25:57can't put all the weight on the back feet so it's critical well then it's all right we'll soon
26:03I don't secret is really not taking too much off because if you go too far you can easily easily
26:09cut them he's having his beauty treatment I know it ain't nice being upside down that's it yep he's happy
26:17I think all right all right Tom good boy they hate me in a turnover crate because they know if
26:28they're
26:28going in there they're having something done with them so they're quick to get back home a bit of food
26:32and they'll follow you anyway and with the job done come on then Rodney can enjoy his favorite
26:40afternoon pastime I like to watch him at front of the house I can see what's happening and how they're
26:46growing and what they're doing it helps you relax and all and you can see potentially and if you're
26:54feeding them right towards the needle at the animal hospital in Huddersfield giant tortoise Bernie seems
27:09to be running short on patience she's missing at me I think she's a little bit irritated but I would
27:14be if I was pregnant sir Becky and Matt have just discovered 10 eggs stuck inside her just gotta be
27:23careful I don't want to have to sedate to get a blood sample but if she'll let me just hold
27:27her
27:27head push those two legs in that might keep her head out very strong that's it all right you push
27:32those two legs in I'm trying Matt don't worry if you can't that is fine I'll just give her a
27:38tickle
27:39lovely come on missus try that there we go oh perfect get some blood straight shot right well done
27:47that's just going to check on her red blood cells white blood cells calcium levels because at the end of
27:52the day she has passed eggs before and for her to not be passing them is slightly unusual so I
27:57want
27:57to make sure there's no underlying condition that could be causing this and really it should hopefully
28:01give us some answers as to why we're having trouble this time some hormone injections will just help get
28:08those eggs moving and will give us some supplemental calcium as well to help there you go there's that
28:13calcium in there jobs a good one last but not least hormone injection just gonna put that right into
28:19this muscle here well then many right ball back in the box all being well those injections should
28:27help her to pass those eggs and hopefully within the next day or so she'll pass them right Jay so
28:35yes she's got eggs she's got 10 to be specific if not then we'll just have to cross that bridge
28:42when we
28:42come to it because at the end of the day things don't get passed then you've got no choice but
28:46so we're going
28:47surgically and trying to move them which is no mean free to the tortoise
28:59in Kirby moorside Shirley has brought her young springer spaniel brutus back to the practice with Peter
29:08hoping he'll prove that little miracles can happen the next patient is a chap or saw and he'd just been
29:14run over by a car and the owner saw the wheel actually go over his body and I was quite
29:20concerned
29:20that he might have abdominal damage that some of his body organs may have been squashed and even though
29:28it was quite bright then the effect of that may be apparent afterwards Mrs McCann so I'm just checking up
29:37on
29:37him today to see how he's going on morning morning Brutus how are you hey you look okay to me
29:47have you been all right what are you to tell me is he eating okay yes his abdominal muscles were
29:54quite tense

30:03sniff around while I'm examining you hey let's have a look you've been a very good boy haven't you yeah

30:31he's gone I'm so pleased that he's recovered to such an extent I would say he's back to normal so
30:42I hope when Brutus is out in traffic again he does consider what needs to be done in other words
30:48look right left and right again before proceeding and then Brutus will live happily ever after
30:58with Brutus with Brutus back out enjoying exercise well away from busy roads Shirley's husband Michael still can't believe their
31:08luck
31:09Brutus go go it was devastating to see him run over I was only maybe 10 meters away I mean
31:16just unbelievable
31:19I mean he thinks everything is his friend but he's obviously learning now he's what 18 months old
31:24so he's learned a lesson Brutus he's my shadow now whatever I'm doing
31:34oh Brutus how much do we love you boy
31:44the Yorkshire Dales is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful break but undeterred by his recent biking accidents
31:53Julian's come for a not so relaxing weekend I've just arrived at the campsite in Swaledale
32:00I'm very excited because tomorrow I'll be doing mountain bike racing in one of the most beautiful
32:06parts of Yorkshire the closer I've got to the campsite the more and more excited I've been getting a trip
32:13away
32:13like this the exam really starts when I press my pop-up roof button and the roof goes up and
32:18that's when
32:18I know that I'm really in full camping mode so that is where we're all going to be tomorrow we
32:26go up up up
32:27and then down down down and that's the best bit and then we're happy
32:34burgers it is today for tea
32:38oh yum look at that
32:41mmm I just know how much fun that's going to be tomorrow when I'm whizzing down at high speed and
32:46doing jumps
32:47I'm just totally excited about it
32:55it's gonna be a long day in the saddle and I need to get my beauty sleep I think tonight
33:00so I'm gonna turn in early
33:10the Ard Rock Festival remember no mics allowed in the registration tent is the UK's biggest mountain bike event with
33:18thousands of riders competing across the intimidating slopes of Swaledale
33:23this is the registration process and this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and carries risks personal injury death
33:30etc etc so
33:32I've signed that so can I cross that bit out because
33:36Although he likes to seem relaxed Julian's more aware of the risks than ever after his serious knee injury
33:44I'm
33:45Slightly nervous mountain biking at this level is always quite dangerous. There's there's challenges ahead for sure
33:56Julian's competing in the over 50s veterans group aptly known as the grand vet
34:02category
34:02Seven stages 40 kilometers of glorious Yorkshire Dales countryside await you
34:09This is when the adrenaline starts to starts to flow
34:13Okay, so ladies and gentlemen, come on. You may go. Enjoy
34:22This course is right up in the high parts of Swaleale. It's pretty rocky so try not to fall off.
34:29That would be my main challenge
34:32Still to come
34:34Hello Shona
34:35She finally does it
34:36Fresh concerns over a rare breed calf
34:39I don't know whether you want to check the calf because she's bitten the navel off right at the top
34:43Have a look at your navel then
34:45And during Julian's epic bike challenge
34:49A frightening deja vu
35:02Near Huddersfield
35:03Lyric, what are you up to?
35:04Jess recently called Shona when she mistakenly thought her rare breed heifer Tilly was in labor
35:11I was very concerned the white parks are
35:14They're actually rarer than pandas and her line has a reputation for twins
35:19So I thought because of the twins they may be tangled up together or the calf might be
35:24dead
35:26But thankfully
35:29One healthy little girl has been born very pleased that she came out quickly that she was a heifer and
35:36that actually pleased that she was a single calf
35:39So I'm pleased that we can continue that genetic line
35:43But Jess still has some concerns so she's asked Shona to come back
35:49What I'd wanted Shona to do is
35:52Because she thought that she'd felt this sort of second head or some lump behind the calf
35:57Just to make sure that there isn't a dead calf inside her and to make sure that she's returning to
36:03normal
36:04She's healthy
36:05Good morning Jess
36:06Hello Shona
36:07Has she finally done it?
36:09You'll be pleased to see
36:11Oh look at that
36:13She's a heifer
36:14Oh fantastic
36:16And she was done in 15 minutes because she came so quickly
36:19I thought oh there might be another one coming, but then she just settled down
36:23Good girlie, good tillie
36:26Third last tillie
36:29Yeah, that's fine cervix is closing nicely
36:32So I was definitely wrong about the second calf
36:35But that's a good thing
36:36But I don't know whether you want to check the calf because she's bitten the navel off right at the
36:41top
36:42So have a look at your navel then
36:45You can feel the cord coming through, can't feel any hernias or anything that's a problem
36:50The cord's intact
36:52She's just bitten it off nice and neat hasn't she your mum, hasn't she?
36:56I do like these calves
36:59They're so pretty with their eyeliner
37:03So have you thought of a name yet?
37:05Erm, well Tilly was named after Matilda the naughty schoolgirl
37:10Because she was the naughtiest little calf I knew, weren't you?
37:14Wasn't the nice teacher called Miss Honey?
37:17But honey's quite nice
37:18Yeah, yeah, honey
37:20Do you want to be called honey?
37:21It's called the Matilda theme
37:22She just looked at you then when you asked her
37:26I'm really pleased every calf is important and every heifer calf is extra important
37:34It's really good to see another heifer calf in the breed and hopefully in a couple of years time
37:38Honey will be getting on with having some calves of her own as well and carrying on the breed
37:50A few miles away Matt's come to the zoo after treating Bernie the giant tortoise who had 10 eggs stuck
37:57inside her
38:01You all right Jake?
38:03You all right Matt
38:03How's things?
38:04How are you?
38:05Not too bad, not too bad
38:06How are we doing?
38:07She's passed all her eggs
38:08Oh fantastic
38:09She actually did it on the way home in the drive from the vets
38:12Back of my car she ended up laying the last one
38:15Excellent
38:16But we've been putting her in the field to sort of give her a bit of TLC, a bit more
38:20grass to build her back up
38:21And she's thriving
38:25She's trying to escape, trying to get the weeds on the outside of the enclosure
38:30She's eating the grass as we speak
38:32Oh brilliant
38:33Let's go say hello
38:36It's like she recognises me
38:38Relax
38:39Hey, it's all right
38:42She recognises me straight off the bat, she's tucked herself right in
38:45Hey, it's all right
38:47Don't look so concerned
38:49Hey
38:50Ah, she looks well
38:51She looks really bright in the eyes, doesn't she?
38:53She looks happy
38:54Are you enjoying yourself?
38:55That's what we like to see
38:59The improvement's almost instantly
39:01She's a lot happier, she moves about a lot more
39:03And she's just like all burning up
39:05Fantastic
39:07Looks like she's off
39:08She's had enough of us, Jake
39:09I don't blame her
39:22No
39:23Back in peaceful Swaledown
39:27Julian's competing in one of the UK's toughest mountain bike events
39:32Not long after suffering a serious injury when he came off his bike
39:39This event is basically a continuous ride
39:42There's no stopping, there's no waiting
39:43It's just a whole day of non-stop riding
39:47But riding in tandem, he does have some support
39:53I'm doing this with my friend James
39:55We go riding every Tuesday
39:58This has gone all right, isn't it, James?
39:59Yeah, it's excellent
40:00So we've done one of the stages out of seven
40:03And you think it's going to be easy because it's downhill, but
40:06Your legs are stinging by the time we get to the bottom
40:16Every Yorkshire vet needs to take time to relax
40:20Julian's relaxation is just more high octane than most
40:25This is exactly my idea of a perfect day
40:27When I'm not at work, this is where I like to be
40:30You're not thinking about any stressors or pressures or anything like that
40:33You're just concentrating on going as fast as you can and not falling off
40:43You OK?
40:48Yes
40:58It's not far until the pit stop where Julian can assess the damage and refuel
41:04Can we help us out?
41:05Yeah, yeah, just take as many as you want
41:06Thank you
41:08Quite hard
41:10Pull off and hurt my elbow
41:11It's not too bad, it's just a flesh wound
41:14His bike's chain has been coming off
41:17It's been jumping for a while, hasn't it?
41:19Yeah
41:19But while he's an expert at fixing animals, for this, he needs mechanic Amelia
41:25If you actually look really closely, it says off
41:30You ride a bike, right?
41:32Yeah, exactly
41:33You have a different job, exactly
41:35That's always the way that I've been
41:38It's a major school where I've been driving with my clutch off, apparently
41:43You know what I did last time?
41:45Go on
41:46When it didn't feel right, I went and bought a new bike
41:49It's a good solution
41:50It worked really easy
41:56The Ard Rock race is a 40-kilometre challenge
42:00with over 1,500 metres of arduous climbs and terrifying descents
42:08But Julian has put past injuries and minor flesh wounds behind him
42:13to reach the finish line
42:21That was absolutely, as the name suggests, totally epic
42:24Super day
42:25And they're all again
42:28Now, really
42:28He just needs to find out how he's fared
42:33in his appropriately named veterans category
42:36You're second in the grand vets, then
42:37The second in the grand vet category
42:42That puts a smile on my face
42:48The mountain biking community is like, you know, everybody's so friendly
42:53There's camaraderie, there's a bit of competition
42:55And it's just a really, really good, fun environment
43:00We'll be tentatively in action, that's for sure
43:02So, I think that's our next stop
43:07It's just a really good time
43:08Or anything, I'm so happy
43:11And it's just a really good time
43:15But that's all it keeps happening
43:15But there's a lot of times
43:15When you see the world where you're feeling
43:16With our students, then miss the next step
43:16In a long-term dream
43:16Of a hundred dreams
43:21The second in the grand, the last time
43:25This is a beautiful, well, like
43:26The third in the grand, that's a great
43:27And it's just like,
