00:00all right well listen let's get into uh obviously the story of the century right now
00:04and that's the amazing comeback UConn over Duke first and foremost allow me to say this
00:10I hate Duke with the passion of a thousand sons so I ain't gonna be crying today over Duke being
00:17eliminated plus Duke beat UConn 30 years ago on a Leitner shot at the buzzer Duke beat Kentucky
00:23a million years ago on the Leitner shot off the Grand Hill uh baseball home run pass whatever
00:28you want to call it I in Philadelphia all those years ago uh so they've had their share of winning
00:34it's time that Duke starts losing and since Shire became the head coach there that's what they do
00:41they blow up in a big spot they did it last year they did it again yesterday and I'm here
00:48for all
00:48of it so a couple quick things all right first and foremost you got a timeout left you got to
00:55tell the
00:55kids on the court if you get trapped if you're panicking call a timeout matter of fact he could
01:02call a timeout and he doesn't call a timeout number one number two uh the younger of the not younger
01:08the less talented of the two buzzer brothers because they're obviously twins are born at the
01:12same time um you know picks up his dribble there and then panics trying to get the ball over the
01:19outstretched arms of two UConn defenders again you have to know the situation this is coaching 101
01:25right either call the timeout or just hang on to the ball you hang on to the ball UConn has
01:33to foul you
01:34if they don't foul you the clock runs out you're going to the final four if they do foul you
01:40you're
01:41going to the free throw line and he's a damn good free throw shooter over 80 on the year and
01:47you're
01:47shooting two at that spot make them both game is over make one out of two maybe UConn has a
01:54second
01:55maybe a second and a half to go the length of the court and hoist up a three to tie
01:59the game
01:59this game was lost because John Shire the head coach of Duke does not have a coach in a big
02:07spot Tyrone
02:08yes disappointing if you're a Duke fan I had Duke in my bracket but I was rooting against him I
02:14was
02:14for UConn if I'm being honest but I don't know how you do this with this many good players how
02:20you
02:20blow it they were not just this year this is what he does every year they recruit better than just
02:27about everybody they've got more talent than any team in basketball in the last year 10 years without
02:33going to a final four and in the look if you're winning by 20 it's easy to be a coach
02:39right you're up
02:40up by 20 right it's not hard to coach a team that's up by 20 but when you need to
02:46coach these
02:46kids in a one possession game he is horrendous at it and was again yesterday and I give UConn the
02:54kids the credit and Mullins who makes the shot of course with ice water in his veins but that that
02:59team
03:00never quit they never gave up they chipped away chipped away chipped away this is a team that was
03:06won for its first 18 from behind the arc and then made three of its last four to uh to
03:13win the game
03:13but if you're trying to find a singular causal reason for why the Duke Blue Devils lost it's their head
03:20coach who still has a timeout in his back pocket when he went to bed last night it's unbelievable how
03:26that happens how do you still have a timeout and the other part is how do you let Hurley take
03:31your
03:31lunch money coachingly UConn's players knew exactly what to do in that situation and Duke's players just
03:37didn't know what to do well the only thing I'll push back on that is you know they didn't foul
03:42right
03:42away and I'm thinking you got a foul right away you know uh under 10 seconds to go you know
03:49your guy
03:49misses the first three throw makes the second one right I thought they kind of foobarred that
03:53possession a little bit they let 14 seconds come off the clock uh before they attempted a shot
03:58um and then of course once uh Duke inbounds the ball I'm thinking you got a foul right away
04:05because at that point your only shot to win in my opinion was going to be if they don't make
04:09uh
04:09convert free throws so there was a chance where the final 10 seconds are going to come off the clock
04:16and UConn never fouls and the clock would have gone to triple zeros and UConn would have lost the game
04:23by
04:23two and everyone would have said to Danny Hurley why didn't you foul in that spot so I give UConn
04:29a
04:30lot of credit but everyone knows Danny Hurley I think I've said it the entire season is the best
04:35college coach in America nobody asked him that question after the game I'd love to understand
04:41the rationale for not fouling because in that spot mathematically your only chance is to foul
04:48and hope that Duke misses a free throw and then you get that one last possession to tie the game
04:53but obviously history is not going to tell that story all history is going to remember is one of
04:57the greatest endings of a college basketball game in the tournament to go to the final four that we've
05:04ever seen
