00:14of The Last of Us,
00:16detailing what led to the end of the world in the events of the series.

00:39Beyond the fact that it most likely began in South America and quickly spread across the world through infected crops,
00:46overwhelming hospitals and emergency services,
00:48we know very little about the origins of the Cordyceps infection that started the events of The Last of Us.
00:54However, it is based on the real-life Cordyceps fungi that takes over its host by infecting its brain,
01:01turning them into a zombie-like vehicle whose only purpose is to continue to spread the infection.
01:06Despite warnings of the fast-moving contagion, little could be done to stop the spread,
01:11and it soon crept its way through Mexico and Central America before reaching the United States.
01:16Our first encounter with the Cordyceps infection began on September 26, 2013,
01:22in what would be forever known as Outbreak Day.
01:25After surprising her father Joel with a last-minute birthday gift,
01:29Sarah is awoken in the middle of the night by her Uncle Tommy,
01:32calling desperately, trying to reach Joel before the lion goes dead.
01:35Exploring the house, Sarah finds newspapers alluding to hospital admittance skyrocketing over 300%
01:42before eventually making her way downstairs to find her father Joel rushing into the house from the backyard in a
01:48panic.
01:48Just as Joel manages to grab his gun, their neighbor crashes through the back door,
01:53forcing Joel to shoot and kill him before he could get to Sarah.
01:57As the two run out the front door, they are greeted by Tommy, who managed to make his way to
02:01Joel's.
02:02As the group escapes in Tommy's car, Joel and Tommy try to understand what's happening,
02:07with the two agreeing that the worst places hit were the densely populated cities,
02:11so their best course of action is to get as far away as possible.
02:15Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea,
02:18and the group is trapped by large numbers of people also attempting to flee the outbreak,
02:23and worse, the infected.
02:25Just as they find a way through, their vehicle is hit by a large truck,
02:29sending them flying and knocking them unconscious.
02:32Joel awakens and breaks himself and Sarah out of the car,
02:36but her leg is broken, forcing Joel to carry her to safety.
02:39Witnessing an infected man attacking others, Joel gives his gun to Tommy,
02:43telling him to keep them safe as the group continues their attempt to flee the city.
02:47Keep us safe.
02:49Hold it.
02:50Hold on tight.
02:52However, the infection is quickly spreading,
02:55and more and more infected are attacking anything that moves,
02:58forcing Joel and Tommy to make their way through back alleys looking for a way out.
03:03Eventually, Joel, Sarah, and Tommy are separated as Tommy stays behind to hold back the infected,
03:09allowing Joel and Sarah to escape.
03:11Just as the infected are about to pounce,
03:13a soldier guns them down before being ordered to contain the outbreak at all costs,
03:18turning his gun on Joel and Sarah.
03:20He opens fire, sending Joel and Sarah rolling down a ravine.
03:24Just as he's about to shoot Joel, Tommy arrives, killing the soldier.
03:28The relief is short-lived, however,
03:30as Sarah has been shot and is bleeding out.
03:33Joel holds her, pleading for her to hold on,
03:36but unfortunately, Sarah quickly succumbs to her injuries and dies in Joel's arms.

03:52From here, the game skips ahead 20 years,
03:54with news reports detailing the fall of civilization
03:57as those who are left alive attempt to survive in what remains of humanity.
04:01However, before we pick up once again with Joel,
04:04there are some other important events that occurred during this time that we need to cover.
04:08As the news of the outbreak spread,
04:10some towns and communities were evacuated to quarantine zones
04:13before the infection completely took over.
04:16The military was quickly overrun by the infected,
04:18resorted to bombing highly populated areas
04:21in an attempt to stop not only the spread of the infection,
04:24but also the infected from escaping.
04:26Despite their best efforts,
04:28the military and various other government agencies were unable to contain the outbreak,
04:32and by early 2014,
04:35the infection won and humanity became an endangered species
04:38as more than 60% of the world's population was either infected or dead.
04:43The Federal Disaster Response Agency, or FEDRA,
04:46converted numerous large cities into quarantine zones with a strong military presence,
04:51and in many cases,
04:53enormous walls shielding its residents from the infection.
04:56FEDRA would also set out to rescue and round up civilians from smaller communities
05:01in order to slow the spread of the infection by cutting down on its food supply.
05:05Outside the Seattle city limits,
05:07FEDRA discovered a settlement in which a woman
05:09had managed to keep her entire community safe from the Cordyceps.
05:13Her devoted group of followers referred to her as the Prophet,
05:16and she claimed to have been given visions about the end of the world from God
05:20and taught her disciples to lead a sin-free existence to survive the end of days.
05:24Her followers would come to call themselves the Seraphites, or Scars,
05:28and stuck to her words and teachings as if they were gospel,
05:32worshipping their savior.
05:33A short time later,
05:35FEDRA ceased all rescue operations and declared martial law,
05:38with FEDRA becoming the de facto authority in quarantine zones.
05:42Naturally, opposition to this police state rose up in the form of the Fireflies,
05:47who fought to restore the original government and find a cure for the Cordyceps.
05:51With supplies already running low,
05:53the Fireflies inspired numerous other groups to fight back against FEDRA,
05:57eventually taking down and freeing numerous quarantine zones.
06:01Clashes between the groups led to even stricter crackdowns in quarantine zones,
06:05such as Boston where Fireflies were publicly executed to deter any further resistance.
06:10Numerous other forms of resistance to FEDRA's police state rose up,
06:14such as the Hunters in Pittsburgh and the eventual formation of the WLF in Seattle,
06:19each with their own way of dealing with both FEDRA and also the citizens of the quarantine zones.
06:25And these are only the ones we know of.
06:27With the collapse of society, so too fell the lines of communication.
06:31With nearly all quarantine zones falling due to resistance,
06:35most took their chances out in the world,
06:37forming new groups or communities,
06:39each with their own way of surviving the infection and the end of the world.
06:43All the while, the Cordyceps continued to evolve,
06:45and numerous forms of the infection began to emerge over time.
06:49The base infected are referred to as Runners, Stalkers, Clickers, and Bloaters,
06:54with the latter's infection taking over a decade to grow and form,
06:58while the rest occurred within a year.
07:00Part 2 would also introduce new forms of the infection, such as Shamblers,
07:04and given the multiple different biomes and environments just in the U.S. alone,
07:08there's no telling how many other types of infected could be out there.
07:12It's during this time in the late 2010s that Ellie Williams and Abby Anderson are born.
07:18Unfortunately, Ellie's mother passes away shortly after,
07:21entrusting her baby daughter to one of the leaders of the Fireflies, Marlene,
07:25who in turn gives her to FEDRA for her own safety.
07:28Ellie is raised with the other orphan children of the Boston QZ.
07:32It's also during this time in Seattle in the late 2020s that Jason and Emma Patterson and Isaac Dixon
07:38form their own version of the Fireflies, the Washington Liberation Front,
07:42or WLF.
07:44Unlike the Fireflies, however, the goal of the WLF is simply the abolition of FEDRA in Seattle,
07:50and eventually the numerous clashes between the groups lead to the deaths of its core founders,
07:55Jason and Emma.
07:56The WLF eventually overruns FEDRA, killing or displacing the entire agency from Seattle.
08:02With FEDRA gone, the WLF creates a surprisingly stable community,
08:06and by all accounts, thrives under their leadership.
08:09However, continued conflicts with the fanatical Seraphites lead to constant confrontations
08:14between the groups that would continue for years.
08:16Outside of these groups, others find their own way of surviving the apocalypse.
08:21Some would steal and rob any survivors unfortunate to cross their paths,
08:25while others, like the Rattlers, turn to slave labor and human trafficking.
08:45Even more disturbing, some survivors turn to cannibalism in order to survive as supplies continue to become more and more
08:52scarce over the years.
08:54Now 13, Ellie attends one of FEDRA's military boarding schools,
08:58where she is isolated until she makes friends with another young girl, Riley Abel.
09:02The two would routinely sneak out of school and explore the outer areas of the QZ.
09:07It's during one of these explorations that Ellie and Riley finally meet Marlene,
09:12who recognizes Ellie and tells her she knew her mother before giving Ellie what would become her most prized possession,
09:18a switchblade which originally belonged to Ellie's mother, Anna.
09:21We don't know a lot about Joel's time in the years between Outbreak Day and when he ended up in
09:26Boston,
09:26but what we do know is that Joel did whatever it took to survive.
09:31After Sarah's death, it's hinted that Joel contemplated ending his own life
09:35before he and Tommy set out on the road looking to survive the collapse of society.
09:39I struggled for a long time with surviving.
09:51Through numerous in-game dialogue, we find out that Joel and Tommy likely joined other hunters,
09:57robbing and murdering any group unfortunate enough to fall into one of their many traps.
10:01Eventually, the brothers find their way to Boston, where Tommy joins the Fireflies with Marlene.
10:06This leads to a lot of tension between Tommy and Joel before Tommy eventually leaves Boston and Joel behind,
10:13heading for Wyoming.
10:14Joel would then team up with another smuggler named Tess
10:17and make a name for himself as a brutal yet reliable smuggler within the Boston QZ.
10:22A year after meeting Marlene, Riley has left the Federal Boarding School with dreams of joining the Fireflies,
10:28leaving Ellie behind.
10:30One night, Riley sneaks into Ellie's room and invites her out for a surprise.
10:34Ellie, upset that Riley had left her alone, but grudgingly agrees and the two sneak off to a nearby mall.
10:40Riley reveals that she's joined the Fireflies and that she'll be leaving with them for another city in the morning.
10:46Ellie is naturally upset by this news, as not only is Riley one of her only friends in Boston,
10:51but Ellie has also started to develop feelings for Riley, romantic styles.
10:55The two continue exploring the mall, playing with numerous oddities they find
10:58while reminiscing about their favorite memories together.
11:01Finally, with their time coming to an end, Riley and Ellie dance to a store's stereo system
11:06with Ellie finally revealing her feelings for Riley.
11:09The two share a kiss, with Riley deciding not to leave with the Fireflies and stay with Ellie.
11:14Their bittersweet moment is interrupted by the infected, however,
11:17drawn to the two by the sound of the store's loud music.
11:20Riley and Ellie attempt to escape, but are overwhelmed,
11:23and eventually, though the two emerge victorious, Riley reveals she's been bitten,
11:27and Ellie discovers a bite on her own arm as well.
11:30The pair contemplate ending it all before they can turn,
11:33but instead decide to wait it out and turn together.
11:36You know, we can...
11:39be all poetic and just lose our minds together.
11:43However, as we learn, Riley is the only one to succumb to the infection,
11:47as Ellie discovers she is immune.
11:50Three weeks later, Tess shows up at Joel's door, beaten and bruised.
11:53She explains their shipment was hijacked by another smuggler,
11:57and in their attempt to reclaim their stolen goods,
11:59the pair end up crossing paths with Marlene,
12:01who is suffering from a gunshot wound,
12:03likely from the exchange between the Fireflies and Fedra only a short while earlier.
12:08She explains she knows where Joel and Tess's guns are,
12:10but that she'll only return them if they smuggle something out of the city for them.
12:14Ellie.
12:15Ellie, we won't get another shot at this.
12:19Hey, we're smuggling her?
12:21Marlene explains she needs them to get Ellie out of the city
12:24to another group of Fireflies waiting outside the QZ.
12:28And after Tess checks on their stolen stock,
12:30Joel and Tess reluctantly sneak Ellie out of the city.
12:33Almost immediately, the group is caught by patrolling Federal soldiers,
12:37and after a quick exchange that ends with the soldiers dead,
12:40Tess discovers Ellie is infected.
12:42Ellie explains that her bite is over three weeks old,
12:45and that Marlene believes Ellie is immune,
12:47and the last possible hope for a cure for the Cordyceps infection.
12:51Although Joel protests, the two agree to fulfill their promise
12:54and deliver Ellie to the Fireflies.
12:56Making their way through the devastated Boston,
12:59they encounter multiple groups of infected, and worse, clickers.
13:03After finally making their way to the planned drop-off,
13:05Joel discovers all the Fireflies have been killed.
13:08Tess, particularly disturbed by this discovery,
13:11reveals she had been bitten during one of their confrontations with the infected,
13:15and pleads with Joel to get Ellie to Tommy,
13:18who could possibly link him up with the Fireflies once again to hopefully,
13:22finally, find a cure.
13:23There's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me
13:27so you get her to Tommy's.
13:29As Fedra descends on the group,
13:31Tess stays behind to give Joel and Ellie time to escape,
13:34sacrificing herself and taking out as many soldiers as she can in the process.
13:38After laying down some ground rules,
13:40the pair begin their trek to a town defended by eccentric prepper, Bill.
13:45And after narrowly surviving Bill's booby-trapped town,
13:48and a particularly disgruntled bloater,
13:50manage to secure a vehicle to continue their journey west.
13:53As the pair continue west into Pittsburgh,
13:55they encounter a large group of roaming hunters who have taken over the city,
14:00preying on helpless victims who dare to enter,
14:02killing and stealing whatever they happen to be carrying.
14:05After narrowly surviving one of these encounters,
14:07Joel and Ellie gradually make their way through the city,
14:10making one horrific discovery after another.
14:13Eventually, the two become separated by a collapsing elevator,
14:16and Joel must make his way out of the building's basement to rejoin Ellie.
14:20Just as he's about to make his way out,
14:22Joel is attacked and nearly killed by one of the hunters
14:25before being saved at the last minute by Ellie,
14:28who uses Joel's gun to kill the hunter.
14:30Man!
14:32I shot the hell out of that guy, huh?
14:34This is the first time Ellie kills anyone who isn't infected.
14:38Joel and Ellie then cross paths with brothers Henry and Sam,
14:42who are also attempting to escape the Pittsburgh city limits.
14:45After their escape attempt goes horribly wrong,
14:48the group is separated and pursued by the hunters' armored vehicle,
14:52leading Joel and Ellie to jump off a broken bridge into the river below,
14:55even though Ellie can't swim.
14:57Rejoining Henry and Sam,
14:59the group makes their way through a sewer system
15:01that used to be a makeshift home for a group of survivors
15:03who ultimately didn't survive.
15:05Always remember to lock your doors, people.
15:07Thanks for the warning on the other side, guys.
15:09Emerging on the other side,
15:11they are once again accosted by the relentless hunters
15:13before accidentally unleashing a horde of infected.
15:17After narrowly avoiding death,
15:19the group beds down for the night,
15:20but when Ellie goes to wake Sam,
15:22she discovers he's been bitten and turned overnight.
15:25Joel attempts to kill Sam,
15:27but is stopped by Henry,
15:28who is forced to kill his own brother.
15:30Driven by grief,
15:31he ultimately takes his own life as well.
15:34Okay, okay, easy.
15:35This is your fault.
15:36This is nobody's fault, Henry.
15:38It's probably your fault.
15:40Henry!
15:41Henry, no!
15:42A couple of months later,
15:43Joel and Ellie find themselves at a heavily guarded dam
15:46that just so happens to be under construction
15:48by Joel's brother Tommy and others from his community.
15:52Joel takes Tommy aside,
15:53and after years apart,
15:55tells Tommy about Ellie and her immunity,
15:57asking Tommy to escort Ellie the rest of the way to the Fireflies.
16:01Upon learning that Joel plans to abandon her,
16:04Ellie flees to a nearby farmhouse
16:05where Joel and Tommy eventually find her,
16:07and Joel and Ellie have their first truly open heart-to-heart discussion.
16:11Not her, you know.
16:13What?
16:14Maria told me about Sarah.
16:16Ellie?
16:16And...
16:19You are treading on some mighty thin ice here.
16:23I'm sorry about your daughter, Joel,
16:25but I have lost people too.
16:27You have no idea what loss is.
16:31As the group heads back to Tommy's community of Jackson,
16:33Joel relents and tells Tommy he'll take Ellie the rest of the way
16:36to the Fireflies himself.
16:38Tommy tells Joel about a research site the Fireflies were using
16:41at the University of Eastern Colorado,
16:43and the pair sets off.
16:45After finally finding the lab,
16:47they discover the Fireflies abandoned the facility long ago.
16:50However, just as they learn about the Fireflies' next possible whereabouts,
16:54a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah,
16:56Joel and Ellie are ambushed by more hunters,
16:58and Joel is unfortunately gravely injured in the assault.
17:02Ellie narrowly manages to get her and Joel out alive,
17:05retreating into the mountains as winter approaches.
17:08Ellie manages to find a medical kit in a crashed helicopter
17:11in a long abandoned mall with enough supplies to keep Joel alive
17:14while she figures out what to do next.
17:16Now deep into winter, Ellie hunts for game and supplies in the wilderness
17:21outside the small abandoned suburb her and Joel have been hiding out in.
17:25It's after killing a deer that she encounters David and his companion.
17:29After arguing over the right to the deer,
17:31Ellie accepts a trade of medicine for the deer,
17:34and David's companion leaves to get it.
17:35While David and Ellie wait for his return,
17:38they're surrounded by a horde of infected, clickers, and even a bloater.
17:42It's after barely surviving this encounter that David reveals he knows who Ellie is,
17:47having sent a party out for supplies,
17:49only for the entire group to be killed by a madman and a little girl.
17:54David lets Ellie leave with her medicine,
17:56sending a hunting party to track her down after she escapes.
17:59After giving Joel the life-saving medicine and resting for a bit,
18:03Ellie realizes she's been followed,
18:05and during her attempt to lead the hunters away from Joel,
18:08she's captured by David and taken back to his small town.
18:11It's here that Ellie discovers that David is a cannibal,
18:15and a bit of a pervert,
18:16hoping Ellie will join him in leading his group of cannibals.
18:19After breaking David's finger and nearly ending up on the menu,
18:23Ellie distracts David and his butcher with her infected bite
18:26long enough to barely escape into the town.
18:29Meanwhile, Joel regains consciousness and discovers Ellie missing and hunters roaming the town.
18:34After interrogating a couple of hunters he'd captured,
18:37Joel makes his way to David's town in search of Ellie.
18:40Ellie continues to look for a way to escape David and his cannibals,
18:44using the blizzard as cover until she makes her way into a large restaurant.
18:48Unfortunately, David finds her and traps her,
18:51mercilessly hunting the young girl through the restaurant.
18:54At the same time, Joel has made his way to the town and fights his way through waves of hunters,
18:59using the same blizzard as Ellie to mask his approach.
19:02During her confrontation with David,
19:04a fire breaks out,
19:05and at the last second,
19:07Ellie gains the upper hand on David,
19:09turning his own machete on him.
19:11Joel, having seen the fire,
19:12finds Ellie endlessly striking David over and over again,
19:16before grabbing her and comforting her.
19:18He tried to...
19:20Oh, baby girl.
19:21It's okay.
19:23It's okay.
19:24As spring arrives,
19:25now almost a full year after their journey began,
19:28Joel and Ellie arrive at the outskirts of Salt Lake City,
19:31and continue on their path to the hospital.
19:34With so much having happened during their time together,
19:37Joel and Ellie have bonded,
19:38and Joel discusses what they'll do after they're done with the fireflies.
19:42Joel notices Ellie is distracted,
19:44likely from everything she's endured,
19:46or the realization that all their struggles might finally be over.
19:50On their final approach to the hospital,
19:52the pair encounter a group of wild giraffes roaming the area.
19:55During this brief moment of peace,
19:57as the two watch the majestic creatures,
19:59Joel proposes to Ellie they turn back,
20:01and spend their days in Jackson with Tommy.
20:03Ellie tells Joel everything they've been through can't be for nothing.
20:07After all we've been through,
20:12everything that I've done,
20:17it can't be for nothing.
20:19Just as the two begin their final stretch to the hospital,
20:22Ellie gives Joel a picture of him and Sarah she had stolen while back with Tommy.
20:26After a brief moment,
20:27the pair continue into the underground tunnel leading to the hospital.
20:31Unfortunately, Joel falls into the flooded tunnel,
20:33and as Ellie attempts to save him,
20:35the two were swept up in the current,
20:36and Joel finds Ellie lifelessly floating in the water.
20:40As Joel tries desperately to save her,
20:42a pair of fireflies approach him,
20:43and rather than offering aid,
20:45knock him unconscious,
20:46and bring them both back to their home base at the hospital.
20:49It's at this time that a young Abby is searching for her father Jerry,
20:53and finds him with a zebra trapped in a barbed wire fence.
20:56Abby's friend and Firefly member Owen appears to help the father and daughter cut the zebra free
21:01before telling Jerry that Ellie has been found and is waiting at the hospital.
21:05The group rushed back to the hospital to begin tests on Ellie to determine her immunity.
21:10Later, Abby finds Marlene and Jerry arguing over how to proceed with creating the vaccine,
21:15knowing it will kill Ellie since the cordyceps infect the brain.
21:19Marlene eventually relents,
21:21giving Jerry permission to operate on Ellie in hopes of creating a vaccine,
21:25and leaves to go check on Joel and give him the news.
21:28Joel wakes up in a hospital room to Marlene watching over him.
21:31She informs Joel that Ellie is a good candidate for the vaccine.
21:34When Joel asks to see Ellie,
21:36Marlene tells him that she's being prepped for surgery to remove the cordyceps to create the vaccine.
21:41Naturally, this doesn't sit well with Joel,
21:44knowing full well the surgery would kill Ellie.
21:46While being escorted from the building,
21:48Joel escapes his capture and begins mercilessly killing his way through the fireflies
21:52to reach the surgery wing and find Ellie.
21:54With no more opposition between him and the room,
21:57Joel walks in to discover Ellie unconscious on the table.
22:00Jerry tries valiantly to stand between Joel and Ellie,
22:03reminding Joel of what's at stake.
22:05Joel immediately kills Jerry and picks up Ellie,
22:09escaping out the back of the room and down the elevator to the garage below.
22:12Just as he enters the garage,
22:14Marlene stops him,
22:15once again pleading with Joel for the greater good.
22:18One life versus thousands.
22:20Joel shoots Marlene,
22:22and after securing Ellie in a vehicle,
22:24returns to finish her off to ensure she doesn't come looking for them.
22:27Let me go!
22:30Please.
22:33You just come after her.
22:35Amidst all the chaos,
22:36Abby finally manages to make it to the surgery wing,
22:39only to find her father lying dead on the floor,
22:42killed by Joel during his escape with Ellie.
22:45Abby collapses into Owen's arms as he tries to comfort her.
22:49Ellie finally regains consciousness in the back seat,
22:52and after asking Joel what happened,
22:54rather than telling her the truth,
22:55Joel tells her the Fireflies had given up finding a cure and had sent them away.
23:00Finally, on the outskirts of Jackson,
23:02Ellie once again confronts Joel about the events back at St. Mary's,
23:06demanding he swear that he was telling her the truth about the cure.
23:09Joel does so,
23:10and Ellie chooses to believe him.
23:12I swear.
23:24Okay.
23:25A short time later,
23:26Joel and Ellie have begun to settle into Jackson,
23:29with Tommy and his wife Maria helping them get situated.
23:31While out on patrol one day,
23:33Joel tells Tommy about the events at St. Mary's,
23:36explaining the surgery would have killed Ellie so he did what he had to do to save her.
23:41Tommy agrees to keep Joel's secret for him as the two part ways.
23:44Joel finds Ellie,
23:46who now wears a bandage at all times to hide her bite mark,
23:49having set up her living quarters in Joel's garage,
23:51and gifts her a guitar,
23:53reminding her that he'd promised to teach her.
23:55He then plays her Pearl Jam's Future Days,
23:58which motivates Ellie to take Joel up on his offer for lessons.
24:01If I ever were to lose you,

24:09Meanwhile,
24:10with the Fireflies all but wiped out,
24:12Abby,
24:12Owen,
24:13and the few remaining members make their way to Seattle and join the WLF.
24:17Her obsession with getting revenge on Joel for her father's death
24:20drives her to become one of the WLF's most skilled and respected soldiers.
24:24A year later,
24:25on Ellie's birthday,
24:27Joel and Ellie are exploring the surrounding area outside Jackson,
24:30as Joel has promised Ellie a surprise for her birthday.
24:33Joel playfully shoves Ellie into a nearby creek,
24:36and thankfully,
24:37Ellie has finally learned how to swim.
