00:00:31So your dad shared with me this old drawing you did when you were a kid
00:00:35Like a school assignment about what you want to be when you grow up
00:00:38Yeah
00:00:39Do you remember that?
00:00:40I think I remember the picture
00:00:43I think the short story is I'm going to win all four majors
00:00:47All the majors and be the best player in the world
00:00:49And I'm going to get paid
00:00:50Okay, there was that too
00:00:54Will you please welcome the world under 10 golf champion Rory McIlroy
00:01:01I know that you practice in the house
00:01:03If I tip air balls into my mom's washing machine
00:01:10I don't believe it
00:01:11So we've recreated that for you tonight
00:01:13Let's bring young Rory over this way
00:01:14Come on, Rory
00:01:22Do champions have something?
00:01:24I mean, what's the common denominator?
00:01:27Is it the will to win?
00:01:29I think it's belief
00:01:34Actually, it's not belief, it's knowing
00:01:39Knowing that you're going to win
00:01:47If the Americans at Tiger Woods
00:01:49We have young Rory
00:01:50And believe you me
00:01:51This boy can hit a ball
00:01:52I watched him
00:01:53Good luck
00:01:53Good luck
00:01:55You have to be obsessed
00:01:57You have to thrive on the pressure
00:01:59Winning major championships
00:02:00It's an addiction
00:02:02It's an addiction that you want to
00:02:03You want to have
00:02:04And you want to keep
00:02:06I want to, you know, win more majors
00:02:08And he'll be the number one right player
00:02:10In the world for a long time
00:02:13Rory McIlroy is now just one victory
00:02:16Away from completing golf's Grand Slam
00:02:18All that's missing for him now
00:02:20Is the elusive Masters green jacket
00:02:22With a victory at the Masters
00:02:25Rory will become just the sixth man ever
00:02:28To win the career Grand Slam
00:02:31It's huge, you know
00:02:32I've got the rest of my career
00:02:34To try and master Augusta
00:02:36And get that one
00:02:38Disappointing not to complete
00:02:39The career Grand Slam here
00:02:41But
00:02:42I'm sure it'll happen someday
00:02:45Still chasing that elusive title championship
00:02:51Time is slipping away for Rory to be great
00:02:56Everybody in the world knows
00:02:57That Rory hasn't won a major since 2014
00:03:02Just continues to get bigger and bigger
00:03:03He's had 16 opportunities now
00:03:10We keep having to ask you questions
00:03:12About how do you deal with disappointment
00:03:13Do you learn things, this and that
00:03:15I'm wondering if it's kind of getting exhausting
00:03:17To have to answer those kind of things
00:03:19It is, but
00:03:21At the same time
00:03:22You know, when I do finally win this next major
00:03:25It's going to be really, really sweet
00:03:27So
00:03:31You know, I would go through
00:03:34A hundred Sundays like this
00:03:36To get my hands on another major championship
00:03:58Hello friends, welcome to this tradition
00:04:00Unlike any other
00:04:01The Masters
00:04:04It's always an emotional trip around this story, of course
00:04:07Down in Augusta, Georgia
00:04:10I'm walking back to Georgia
00:04:13And I hope she will take me back
00:04:18Nothing in my pocket
00:04:20And all I own is upon my back
00:04:38Welcome to Augusta
00:04:40On what could be one of the greatest
00:04:42Afternoons of sport
00:04:45That you will ever witness
00:04:48Rory McIlroy
00:04:49Looking for his first victory here
00:04:51At the Masters
00:04:54I don't think I'd ever went into a Masters
00:04:57Playing as good
00:04:58Or feeling as good about my game
00:05:00As I had this year
00:05:01And that's, you know
00:05:03Going into my 17th Masters
00:05:05That's an amazing feeling to have
00:05:06Knowing that
00:05:07Okay, this is
00:05:08You know
00:05:09This could be the year
00:05:12There was a lot of hype
00:05:14Never before has he led
00:05:16Going into the final round
00:05:18With the Grand Slam in his grasp
00:05:21There's a whole lot of history
00:05:23That could be made here today
00:05:25McIlroy
00:05:25Trying to become just the sixth man
00:05:27To complete the career Grand Slam
00:05:29All that weight on his shoulders
00:05:33I honestly felt like the toughest thing for me
00:05:36Going into Sunday
00:05:38Was going to be playing with Bryson
00:05:40The man who we expect to stand in his way
00:05:44Is Bryson DeChambeau
00:05:45Who inflicted painful defeat of Rory McIlroy
00:05:48Only last year at the U.S. Open
00:05:55We're very opposite in how we approach the game
00:05:57And yeah, there's a little bit of history there
00:06:01You told me last night
00:06:03You are so ready for this final round
00:06:05What does being ready look like for you?
00:06:07Just excited
00:06:08Excited for the opportunity
00:06:09We're going to have a lot of fun today
00:06:10It's going to be a great battle
00:06:14So here he goes
00:06:16The day of destiny
00:06:17His 17th attempt to win a green jacket
00:06:21It felt like two boxers walking out for a fight
00:06:26Look at the gladiatory of a rival
00:06:29Of Bryson DeChambeau at the first
00:06:33Now driving, Rory McIlroy
00:06:40Physically, he's got it
00:06:41Technically, he's got it
00:06:42Where is he mentally?
00:06:44That's always the conundrum of Rory, isn't it?
00:06:48I was 12 under par
00:06:50And Bryson was 10 under
00:06:54I tried to just make him invisible
00:06:56You know, don't watch him hit a shot
00:06:58Just get lost in what you're doing
00:07:01So I tried to really just wrap myself in my own little bubble
00:07:08I really tried to focus on the opportunity that I had
00:07:13To fulfill a lifelong dream
00:07:24It's drifting a little to the right
00:07:28It's gone into the bunker
00:07:32An early blow
00:07:41When you do get to the top level in golf
00:07:43The fine margins are in
00:07:45How you can control yourself
00:07:55If you're really mentally strong
00:07:57The physical motion of making a golf swing
00:08:01And hitting a golf shot
00:08:02Should be easier
00:08:06Not good for Rory McIlroy
00:08:08Struggling to make bogey here at the first
00:08:16Two drop shots
00:08:17He taps in
00:08:18For the double bogey
00:08:20And Rory McIlroy's lead
00:08:22From the start of the day
00:08:24Just a few moments into this final round
00:08:26Has been extinguished
00:08:28Your door is open for DeChambeau now
00:08:35Bryson's up to the occasion
00:08:49He said in the build-up
00:08:50To the Masters this year
00:08:52Rory McIlroy
00:08:52That the secret of success
00:08:54Was a willingness
00:08:56To be heartbroken
00:09:00So if you're on Rory's side
00:09:02Listen to us this evening
00:09:04I hope you've got friends and family close
00:09:06Right
00:09:07For support
00:09:23At his home club in Hollywood County Down
00:09:26No one ever doubted him
00:09:29Every time he wins a big tournament
00:09:31The local bakery makes special biscuits
00:09:36I wouldn't say my upbringing
00:09:38Was like a normal upbringing
00:09:39But my parents and golf
00:09:42Have been the constant in my life
00:09:47Honestly all of my childhood memories
00:09:49Are from here at Hollywood Golf Club
00:09:51You know my dad worked here
00:09:53For a good bit of my childhood
00:09:57Our life revolved around this place
00:10:02My mum or my dad would drop me off
00:10:04At 7.30 or 8 o'clock in the morning
00:10:06And pick me up again at 8pm at night
00:10:09You know I'd play 54 holes in a day
00:10:17Summertime
00:10:1710 o'clock at night
00:10:18Running around the golf course
00:10:20Looking for him
00:10:20You know
00:10:22Couldn't find him
00:10:23Just a determined little boy
00:10:27I'm an only child
00:10:29I've always been very comfortable
00:10:31On my own
00:10:33And in golf
00:10:35It is you
00:10:36And your thoughts
00:10:38And the golf ball
00:10:39And I've always
00:10:40Loved that
00:10:43I used to say to Rosie
00:10:46She's odd
00:10:47I mean he's not knocking about
00:10:49Wee boys
00:10:49Is he alright
00:10:50You know
00:10:51Rosie says he just
00:10:52You let him go there
00:10:54You know
00:10:54He was a happy child
00:10:57How you feeling Rory?
00:10:59Good
00:11:01Gerry and Rosie didn't drive him at it
00:11:03It was all
00:11:04Rory wanted to play well
00:11:05And they just supported him
00:11:07Wholeheartedly
00:11:10I would coach Rory
00:11:11And I told him a story
00:11:13About an older Irish pro
00:11:14That I played with
00:11:15Called Paddy Skerritt
00:11:17He would practice his swing
00:11:18Nearly in the bed
00:11:19Or his grip
00:11:19He'd just keep doing it
00:11:21Until he fell asleep
00:11:23Gerry told me one day
00:11:24He says Michael
00:11:25We found Rory
00:11:26Asleep in the bed
00:11:27With his hands on the club
00:11:29And the grip
00:11:32I was obsessed
00:11:35I loved going out to play
00:11:36And imagining
00:11:38That I was playing
00:11:39The major championships
00:11:40And it was always against
00:11:42The greats of the game
00:11:43That I grew up watching
00:11:44Welcome to this tradition
00:11:46Unlike any other
00:11:47The Masters
00:11:50And then I watched Tiger
00:11:51Win the Masters
00:11:52In April of 97
00:11:53There it is
00:11:55A win for the ages
00:12:00I was like
00:12:01I want to do that
00:12:05I think I was about
00:12:07Eight at the time
00:12:08Gerry took him everywhere
00:12:10You know
00:12:10Around Ireland
00:12:12Playing in tournaments
00:12:15People were approaching us
00:12:16Saying
00:12:17Oh we
00:12:17We run a tournament
00:12:19Do you want to come
00:12:20To our tournament
00:12:21And she says
00:12:22Gerry
00:12:23This is a God's route
00:12:23You see if we don't
00:12:25Make an effort
00:12:27We're never going to know
00:12:29She says
00:12:29I'll tell you what we'll do
00:12:30She says
00:12:32I'll go on
00:12:33Night shift
00:12:35Right
00:12:37And
00:12:37You take on
00:12:39Extra jobs
00:12:40So
00:12:41I worked all night
00:12:42And Gerry worked all day
00:12:44And that's how
00:12:45We funded it
00:12:47But just nine years of age
00:12:49Rory McIlroy from Hollywood
00:12:50Is following in the steps
00:12:52Of his golfing hero
00:12:53Tiger Woods
00:12:54And Rory's ambitions
00:12:55Are just as huge
00:12:57To turn a pro
00:12:58And
00:12:59To win
00:13:00All the majors
00:13:01After that interview
00:13:03I said to him Rory
00:13:05Jesus Rory
00:13:06If you won one
00:13:07Wouldn't it be great
00:13:08Yeah yes
00:13:08I'll win them all
00:13:09Walked away
00:13:10I said
00:13:11Alright
00:13:14McIlroy has already been
00:13:16One of the most successful
00:13:17Ever Irish amateurs
00:13:19I'm an eternal optimist
00:13:21That can be
00:13:23Naive in some ways
00:13:25But I'd much rather
00:13:26Go through life
00:13:26Being a dreamer
00:13:30And when I kept
00:13:31Getting that positive feedback
00:13:33From my dad
00:13:34Or from my results
00:13:36In tournaments
00:13:37It kept me going
00:13:39It kept me going
00:13:44So as I got better
00:13:46The dream
00:13:47Got bigger
00:13:49I have complete confidence
00:13:50In myself
00:13:51And hopefully I can
00:13:52Get a major early
00:13:53And show some of the young guys
00:13:54That it is possible
00:14:00All eyes this weekend
00:14:01Will be focused
00:14:02On an Irish prodigy
00:14:03Whom many consider
00:14:04To be the next
00:14:05Tiger Woods
00:14:06This dazzling
00:14:0721 year old
00:14:08Rory McIlroy
00:14:10Has a four shot lead
00:14:11If he holds up today
00:14:13It would mark
00:14:14In many minds
00:14:15The dawning of a new age
00:14:16In the sport
00:14:19That was my first experience
00:14:20Leading in a major championship
00:14:23Going into the last day
00:14:27And I felt like
00:14:28This would be my year
00:14:29To break out
00:14:30And win
00:14:31Win my first major
00:14:33This young man
00:14:34Is playing a game
00:14:35Beyond his years
00:14:36Love the way he's playing
00:14:37He's locked in
00:14:38He's making great decisions
00:14:41A worldwide television audience
00:14:43Including back at his home club
00:14:45In Hollywood
00:14:45Northern Ireland
00:14:46Are gathering ready
00:14:48To salute McIlroy
00:14:49As the new Masters champion
00:14:51Four please
00:14:52Rory McIlroy
00:15:05I made a bogey
00:15:06At the first
00:15:08And
00:15:09I noticed
00:15:10That like
00:15:10A few guys ahead of me
00:15:12Got off to really good starts
00:15:19Now that is
00:15:22Exquisite touch
00:15:23Oh my goodness
00:15:26All I was thinking about
00:15:27Was the fact that
00:15:28I had a four shot lead
00:15:29Now it's just a one shot lead
00:15:32Maybe a little extra pressure
00:15:35I remember just looking around
00:15:36At the scoreboards
00:15:37Way too much
00:15:41Oh no
00:15:44I play my best golf
00:15:45When I'm a little
00:15:46Jovial and relaxed
00:15:47And happy-go-lucky
00:15:49Whatever it is
00:15:50But
00:15:51You know
00:15:51I tried to be
00:15:52So laser focused
00:15:53Tunnel vision
00:15:54I'm here to do a job
00:15:55I'm here to finish
00:15:56This thing off
00:15:58I tried to be someone
00:16:01That I'm not
00:16:03Back on the 10th
00:16:04With McIlroy
00:16:06Rory better be careful
00:16:07With this one
00:16:08It's a really key drive
00:16:10Try and make an easy four
00:16:29I knew that I'd clipped like the very right side of the tree
00:16:34And then you're like
00:16:35Okay what do I do from here
00:16:37You're trying to look for your ball
00:16:39It's over
00:16:40In these cabins
00:16:41That you didn't even know existed
00:16:43Have you ever seen anyone
00:16:44Anywhere
00:16:45Close to this on 10th?
00:16:46Never
00:16:48You know
00:16:48Mike Tyson says
00:16:49Everyone has a plan
00:16:50Until they get punched in the mouth
00:16:51Right
00:16:52And I got punched in the mouth
00:16:53And I did not know what to do
00:16:57Wow
00:16:58That all comes as a shock
00:16:59That wasn't in his master plan
00:17:03Everything at that point
00:17:04Just starts to move so quickly
00:17:07Be careful
00:17:08Left again
00:17:08Oh my goodness
00:17:10And that hit it
00:17:11Triple to 10th
00:17:13And then I four-putted the 12th
00:17:15It was just like
00:17:16Short-circuited panic
00:17:18I was spiraling
00:17:20Like what is going on
00:17:23And then I felt like 13 to 18 went so slow
00:17:29You know
00:17:29It was this death march to the 18th green
00:17:36Well Rory McIlroy joins a long and illustrious list
00:17:38Of top sportsmen
00:17:40Who seem to implode
00:17:41When the eyes of the world
00:17:42Are upon them
00:17:43The Northern Irish golfer
00:17:45Suffered a final round collapse
00:17:46In some of the most dramatic scenes
00:17:48Ever seen in Augusta
00:17:50It's an incredibly horrific
00:17:52And humiliating thing to happen
00:17:54Will this hurt Rory McIlroy in the future?
00:17:57I hope not
00:17:58But that was sad to watch
00:18:052011
00:18:08Probably scarred me
00:18:09More than I even realise
00:18:13You know
00:18:14I've tried to unpack a lot of it
00:18:15But I still don't
00:18:16I probably don't understand
00:18:18How much that that day did
00:18:20You know
00:18:21My subconscious movements
00:18:24Around this place
00:18:26Or this course
00:18:27You know
00:18:27It's probably
00:18:28There's probably
00:18:29Some of that still in there
00:18:382025
00:18:39I obviously didn't get off
00:18:41To the best start
00:18:42You try to
00:18:43Tell the world
00:18:44You're living in your own
00:18:45Little world
00:18:46And it's hard to do
00:19:02That's a shaky start
00:19:11The ball stops
00:19:13And doesn't release
00:19:14And now he's left himself
00:19:16A really, really difficult putt
00:19:19And more frustration
00:19:20From McIlroy
00:19:21In this ragged start
00:19:22To his round
00:19:25I'm an emotional player
00:19:26I ride waves
00:19:27And momentum
00:19:28And then I can get it
00:19:29Going the other way
00:19:30And I can
00:19:31Start to spiral a little bit
00:19:43Golf is the ultimate game
00:19:44Where it's on you
00:19:46There's no one else
00:19:50But obviously
00:19:51You're quite aware
00:19:52Of what Bryson's doing
00:19:53Beside you
00:19:55Now can Bryson DeChambeau
00:19:57Get this for a birdie
00:19:58This for a lead
00:20:01Stiff arms
00:20:02Those hunched shoulders
00:20:03Lightest of touches
00:20:04With the putter
00:20:05And it's in
00:20:06And it's taken two holes
00:20:08But Bryson DeChambeau
00:20:09Has wrenched the lead
00:20:10At the Masters
00:20:11From the grip
00:20:12Of Rory McIlroy
00:20:16We think back
00:20:17To 2011
00:20:20Has he done it again?
00:20:34Everyone in the UK
00:20:35Was watching Rory McIlroy
00:20:37Completely crumble
00:20:38In the last round
00:20:39Of the Masters
00:20:40It was a horror show
00:20:42For the Northern Irishman
00:20:45He had the lead
00:20:47After nine holes
00:20:47And he lost
00:20:48By ten strokes
00:20:51When you lost
00:20:52The Masters
00:20:53On the back nine
00:20:55A lot of people
00:20:56Worried about
00:20:56What he would do
00:20:57To you
00:20:58Did you worry?
00:21:01Being four ahead
00:21:02Going into the final day
00:21:03And having a great chance
00:21:05To win your first major
00:21:07And blowing it
00:21:08The way I did
00:21:09It wasn't a nice feeling
00:21:13I spoke to my mum and dad
00:21:14The next morning
00:21:15I rang home
00:21:16And that's when
00:21:17It sort of hit me
00:21:18I don't remember
00:21:20When the last time
00:21:21I cried over golf was
00:21:23But I just felt like
00:21:25I'd let them down
00:21:26In some way
00:21:28Of course I was gran
00:21:30He was gran
00:21:33The way he was carrying
00:21:34Himself on the golf course
00:21:35Just wasn't him at all
00:21:38You feel for your kids
00:21:41You do
00:21:41You know
00:21:42I know what he's come through
00:21:44There was a massive
00:21:45Question mark
00:21:46Hanging over the head
00:21:46Of McIlroy
00:21:47Will he ever win a major?
00:21:49I don't think he'll ever
00:21:50Win a major
00:21:50Because that collapse
00:21:51Was spectacular
00:21:52He melted down
00:21:53And it will be
00:21:54Very difficult
00:21:55I think
00:21:55For him to rebuild
00:21:56From here
00:21:57I just get them
00:21:58Shoulders back
00:21:59And chin up
00:22:01Start walking properly
00:22:07In that
00:22:08Seven or eight weeks
00:22:09From Augusta
00:22:10To the US Open
00:22:13You know
00:22:14I just had to
00:22:14Go back to the drawing board
00:22:16And try and look
00:22:17For ways to improve
00:22:24I would suspect
00:22:25That Rory would have
00:22:26Some real
00:22:27Live jitters
00:22:28After his performance
00:22:29In the last major
00:22:30And they'll be asking him
00:22:32About that
00:22:32For a long time
00:22:33At least until he wins
00:22:34A major championship
00:22:35Maybe he can do it
00:22:36This week
00:22:42He was really confident
00:22:44He was just
00:22:45Freewheeling it
00:22:46You know
00:22:48You're going to achieve
00:22:49What you want to
00:22:50When you get into
00:22:51That frame of mind
00:22:53There has to be no doubt
00:22:55With what you're doing
00:22:57And I always felt
00:22:59That was his best attribute
00:23:03My goal for the week
00:23:04Was to keep my eye line
00:23:06Above the crowd
00:23:08You know
00:23:09Shoulders back
00:23:10Eyes up
00:23:11If you can
00:23:12Put it out to the world
00:23:14That you're
00:23:15Ready for this
00:23:16Your physiology
00:23:17Affects your psychology
00:23:21I like his spirit
00:23:23Even though he had
00:23:24That disastrous round
00:23:25On Sunday at the Masters
00:23:26He's happy to be here
00:23:32You know
00:23:32Here he is
00:23:32Willing to jump back
00:23:34On that big stage
00:23:35And get in that arena
00:23:36And I think it's impressive
00:23:38For it all to really matter
00:23:40You've got to have
00:23:41The trophy in your hand
00:23:42And no one knows that
00:23:42More than Rory
00:23:46I think he was leading
00:23:47Going into the last round
00:23:48By four or five
00:23:50I says
00:23:51How are you feeling?
00:23:52He says
00:23:53A bit nervy
00:23:54But I'm okay
00:23:54I says Rory
00:23:57I worked
00:23:58Eight years in a row
00:24:01Three jobs
00:24:03Ninety hours a week
00:24:05Never stopped
00:24:07You see the more
00:24:08You put into anything
00:24:11The more you'll get out of it
00:24:16So
00:24:17Rory McIlroy has the look
00:24:18The swagger
00:24:20Of a major champion
00:24:24The last five holes
00:24:26I could really enjoy
00:24:29You know
00:24:29I was like
00:24:30Okay
00:24:30I've got an eight shot lead
00:24:33I remember
00:24:33Just like trying
00:24:35To find my dad
00:24:36In the crowd
00:24:38You know
00:24:38There's so many people there
00:24:39And I couldn't really find him
00:24:41But walking down the 18th
00:24:44He's walking down the left side
00:24:56Him being there
00:24:57And being able to
00:24:58Watch me
00:24:59Fulfill a
00:25:00Lifelong dream
00:25:01Of winning a major championship
00:25:04Rory McIlroy
00:25:06The 2011
00:25:07United States Open champion
00:25:11After what happened
00:25:12I mean
00:25:13You talk about
00:25:15Being resilient
00:25:16I mean
00:25:17That's what you call
00:25:19Happy Valentine's Day
00:25:21Thank you
00:25:27I think that
00:25:28Made me believe
00:25:29That you know
00:25:30I could really
00:25:31Do some
00:25:32Special things
00:25:33In the game
00:25:42Bryson
00:25:42DeChambeau
00:25:43Has a
00:25:43One shot lead
00:25:45Rory McIlroy
00:25:46Drops
00:25:46To ten under
00:25:51Gorgeous control
00:25:52From McIlroy
00:25:53As the ball
00:25:54Curves around the back
00:25:55There's just a little
00:25:56Slim finger
00:25:57Of green
00:25:58And McIlroy
00:25:59Has managed to find it
00:26:01Now McIlroy
00:26:03Can he
00:26:03Hit straight back here
00:26:05If this goes in
00:26:07The 35 year old
00:26:09Will go back
00:26:10Into a share
00:26:11Of the lead
00:26:14Borrowing from
00:26:15Left to right
00:26:15Sends it on
00:26:16Its way
00:26:16Looks good
00:26:17And in
00:26:18And in
00:26:18For McIlroy
00:26:19The first birdie
00:26:20Of his final round
00:26:24And Bryson DeChambeau
00:26:25Is going to drop
00:26:26A shot here
00:26:26Rory McIlroy
00:26:27Is going to be
00:26:28Back in the lead
00:26:28At the Masters
00:26:30Oh you're going to
00:26:31Love it
00:26:31Aren't you
00:26:31You really have
00:26:32Got to love
00:26:34Augusta
00:26:34On a Sunday
00:26:35It is absolute
00:26:36Madness
00:26:37And this is going to be
00:26:38Just incredible
00:26:39Theatre if it carries on
00:26:40Like this
00:26:45With the honour
00:26:46Would be good to hit
00:26:47A good shot here
00:26:48Put the pressure on
00:26:51And he has
00:26:55Got a chance to actually
00:26:57Have a bigger lead
00:26:57Than he did at the start
00:26:58Of the day
00:26:59That's exactly right
00:27:01Walk this one in
00:27:03Go three ahead
00:27:09And now the
00:27:10Walls
00:27:11Van Rory here
00:27:12At the fourth
00:27:15Watch this
00:27:16What's this reaction
00:27:29I first meet Rory
00:27:31In 2011
00:27:32So he's won
00:27:33The US Open
00:27:33At the time
00:27:34He had this
00:27:35Unwavering clarity
00:27:36On his long term
00:27:38Goals in golf
00:27:39At age nine
00:27:40For him to say
00:27:41You know
00:27:42I want to turn
00:27:42Professional
00:27:43Win all the majors
00:27:44It's a pretty
00:27:45Bold ambition
00:27:49I want to be
00:27:50Remembered as
00:27:50One of the best
00:27:51Players that
00:27:52Ever played the game
00:27:56But to be
00:27:57Remembered as
00:27:58One of the best
00:27:58You need to
00:28:00You need to
00:28:01Knock off
00:28:01A few of those
00:28:02Major championships
00:28:05There are
00:28:06Four majors
00:28:07The Masters
00:28:08Tournament
00:28:09The US Open
00:28:11The Open
00:28:12Championship
00:28:13And the PGA
00:28:14Championship
00:28:16The Moptop
00:28:17Makes its way
00:28:18Up the 18th
00:28:21This is for
00:28:21The all time
00:28:22Margin of victory
00:28:23In PGA
00:28:24Championship
00:28:25History
00:28:33I didn't want
00:28:34The persona
00:28:35Of being content
00:28:36With doing
00:28:37What I've done
00:28:37In the game
00:28:38Of golf
00:28:38I wanted to
00:28:39To prove
00:28:40That I had
00:28:40The hunger
00:28:40To do more
00:28:43The hype
00:28:44Built
00:28:45Incredibly
00:28:45After 2014
00:28:46When he won
00:28:47The Open
00:28:48At Hoy Lake
00:28:48The champion
00:28:52McElroy led
00:28:53The British Open
00:28:53Wire to wire
00:28:54McElroy joins
00:28:55Jack Nicklaus
00:28:56And Tiger Woods
00:28:57Is the only players
00:28:57To have won
00:28:58Three majors
00:28:59By the age of 25
00:29:01So here's a question
00:29:02Is he the next
00:29:03Tiger Woods
00:29:04Golf may have
00:29:05A new Tiger Woods
00:29:08He was positioned
00:29:09As you know
00:29:09The next
00:29:11Successor
00:29:11In the world
00:29:11Of golf
00:29:13You know
00:29:13I think that
00:29:14Definitely came
00:29:14With a level
00:29:16Of expectation
00:29:16No question
00:29:31I mean
00:29:31What a summer
00:29:32You became
00:29:33The first
00:29:33European player
00:29:34To win
00:29:34Three separate majors
00:29:36Which just
00:29:36Just leaves the masters
00:29:37That's the next one
00:29:38The next target
00:29:39Yeah
00:29:40The green jacket
00:29:41Yeah
00:29:41That's the one
00:29:42That I'm in for
00:29:42Next year
00:29:43It would complete
00:29:44The career grand slam
00:29:45I think only
00:29:46Five golfers in history
00:29:47Have got it
00:29:48So it would be
00:29:48A huge thing
00:29:49To go for
00:29:50At 25 years of age
00:29:54Trying to join
00:29:55That list of
00:29:56People that have
00:29:57Won the grand slam
00:29:58It's like
00:29:58You're trying to
00:29:59Put yourself
00:30:00Among these
00:30:02Absolute
00:30:04Legends of the game
00:30:06Gene Sireson
00:30:09Ben Hogan
00:30:12Gary Player
00:30:15Jack Nicklaus
00:30:18Tiger Woods
00:30:19I absolutely
00:30:20Idolized him
00:30:22And that's where
00:30:23You know
00:30:24There's all of
00:30:25These little doubts
00:30:25That start to creep in
00:30:27Am I worthy of this?
00:30:31Is this what
00:30:32I'm supposed to do?
00:30:37It's like imposter syndrome
00:30:39Like it's like
00:30:40This
00:30:40Like
00:30:40You know
00:30:42No
00:30:43Why
00:30:43Like this
00:30:44Me?
00:30:46I'm part
00:30:47You know
00:30:47That's
00:30:48That's
00:30:48That's where
00:30:48It sort of gets to
00:30:49I think that's
00:30:50The scary part
00:30:52Rory McIlroy
00:30:53For the Masters
00:30:54Next year
00:30:54In his first green jacket
00:30:56In the career grand slam
00:30:58And he leaves it short
00:30:59No
00:31:01Cannot do that in April
00:31:04I think the significance
00:31:05Of the Masters
00:31:06For him
00:31:07And for
00:31:07The wider golf story
00:31:09It became very real
00:31:11After 2014
00:31:16He's been heartbreak
00:31:17So many times
00:31:18This is his 11th chance
00:31:20To complete that
00:31:22Career grand slam
00:31:24For most of my career
00:31:26It's never just been
00:31:28About the Masters
00:31:30And from 2015
00:31:32To 2025
00:31:32It was the Masters
00:31:34And
00:31:37Oh no
00:31:38Shit
00:31:38Ah shit
00:31:39Shit
00:31:40All right
00:31:41I feel like
00:31:42That grand slam
00:31:43Conversation
00:31:44Just brought a lot
00:31:45Of baggage with it
00:31:47Maybe I didn't
00:31:48Put myself
00:31:49All the way out there
00:31:50In this tournament
00:31:51At certain points
00:31:52Because
00:31:53You know
00:31:54If you get
00:31:54Just this close
00:31:56To doing it
00:31:56And then it's
00:31:57Taken away
00:31:58For some reason
00:31:59Like that's
00:31:59That's hard to
00:32:00That's hard to handle
00:32:03As the years
00:32:04Have went on
00:32:04Like
00:32:05I talk to
00:32:06Different people
00:32:07About that pressure
00:32:11I had lunch
00:32:12With Jack
00:32:13Jack Nicklaus
00:32:14Receives a rousing
00:32:15Ovation
00:32:16As he walks
00:32:17Onto the final dream
00:32:20We talked about
00:32:21All kinds of things
00:32:22With the game
00:32:22And what to do
00:32:24And I talked to him
00:32:25About patience
00:32:27Just be patient
00:32:27With it
00:32:28It's going to come
00:32:28You're too good
00:32:29A player for it
00:32:30Not to come
00:32:34Many people
00:32:35Do it
00:32:35Different ways
00:32:38You figure out
00:32:39What your abilities
00:32:40Are
00:32:41You only try
00:32:41To do
00:32:42What you can do
00:32:42Not what
00:32:43Somebody else
00:32:44Can do
00:32:44I knew
00:32:45What Jack
00:32:45Was getting up
00:32:46Because my tendency
00:32:47When I was younger
00:32:48Was to play
00:32:49The aggressive
00:32:49Swashbuckling golf
00:32:52There was some
00:32:53Drive by Rory McIlroy
00:32:54My goodness
00:32:54He's
00:32:55It's going to be
00:32:56Hard to beat
00:32:56A guy like that
00:32:57That hits
00:32:57So bloody far
00:32:59Second from the pine straw
00:33:02Oh that's another
00:33:03Good one
00:33:03Oh beautiful shot
00:33:04That sat down
00:33:05Like a butterfly
00:33:06With sore feet
00:33:08But I would say
00:33:09I was too much
00:33:11At either side
00:33:11Of the spectrum
00:33:12So I'd be
00:33:13Really swashbuckling
00:33:14And really really
00:33:14Aggressive
00:33:15But then when it
00:33:16Mattered
00:33:16And I was in contention
00:33:17I would get
00:33:18Way too tentative
00:33:19And way too cautious
00:33:23Oh he's lost it as well
00:33:25I don't believe this
00:33:27You want to
00:33:28Play smart
00:33:28But you also want to
00:33:31Recognize when you
00:33:32Have your chances
00:33:35Rory has put some
00:33:36Tough holes behind him
00:33:37We're going to the
00:33:39Tough seventh
00:33:43It is the most
00:33:44Difficult fairway
00:33:45To hit this week
00:33:46Miss this fairway
00:33:47At your peril
00:33:56Seven was a tee shot
00:33:57All week that I
00:33:58Struggled with
00:34:06Not happy with the tee shot
00:34:10This is very far left
00:34:12Hits one of the trees
00:34:13Over there
00:34:19Bryson looking for a spark
00:34:25Give up some distance
00:34:26For accuracy
00:34:33When I was walking up to it
00:34:34I'm just like
00:34:35Please have something
00:34:36Have some sort of shot
00:34:37Some sort of gap
00:34:38Like the one thing
00:34:39Harry and I
00:34:40Always say to ourselves
00:34:41Is all I want
00:34:42Is a backswing
00:34:43And a gap
00:34:45Just talking to Harry
00:34:46Diamond
00:34:47His caddy
00:34:48Yeah I mean I think
00:34:49I can get it
00:34:51Pretty much there
00:34:53Harry was begging me
00:34:55He's like
00:34:55Just chip it out
00:34:56We can make four this way
00:34:57I'm like
00:34:58No no
00:34:58I've got a gap
00:34:59I can see a gap here
00:35:00And he's like
00:35:00What are you talking about
00:35:01There's nothing there
00:35:02I'm like
00:35:03No no
00:35:03I can get a nine iron up
00:35:05And I can do this
00:35:06I like it
00:35:08I feel like I've got a shot
00:35:23One little bit of that pine tree
00:35:27And the ball lands on the green
00:35:30And almost goes into the hole
00:35:31Wow
00:35:33What a shot from Rory McIlroy
00:35:35And he's roaring with laughter
00:35:37He cannot believe it
00:35:39That's the kid in McIlroy
00:35:41That's the young kid playing golf
00:35:43He cannot believe
00:35:44He's pulled that off
00:35:47To take those shots on
00:35:49At such a crucial time
00:35:51Nobody else is going to do it
00:35:53Only him
00:35:55Let's find out
00:35:56What Bryson is thinking
00:36:01It was actually very well played
00:36:08Yeah just brilliant
00:36:15If there was a fault at Rory
00:36:17I think he has a tendency
00:36:19Not to manage his game
00:36:21When he has pressure situations
00:36:38I don't know how you leave it short
00:36:40He didn't think he could
00:36:52Bryson is not going to go away today
00:37:01Bryson's not going to go away today
00:37:01That final round
00:37:02Was maybe a little bigger
00:37:04Because of what happened
00:37:05At Pinehurst the year before
00:37:08you know another chance to win a major got off to a great start i just you know i just
00:37:14got a
00:37:15little uneasy and a bit tense excruciating short misses for mcelroy i was in the 18th tower calling
00:37:26that fun round nobody's had more pressure on him over the last 10 years everybody in the
00:37:30world knows that rory hasn't won since 2014 won a major bryson at pinehursts kind of run over the
00:37:40crowd a little bit what bryson has is is real innate grit and you don't feel grit from rory
00:37:51i know rory has said it afterwards that's you know he probably got out of his rhythm a little bit
00:37:57by
00:37:58thinking a little too much about the situation which how do you not
00:38:09what happens on nine between you and bryson so we both hit good drives in nine and we both
00:38:16hit really good second shots here's bryson
00:38:35big shot for rory must fly it to the hole to avoid the shoulder off the bunker
00:38:42and it's judged really really nicely by mcelroy he's putting uphill from about the same distance
00:38:50as bryson to shambo trying to get it to 13 under par
00:38:55i thought it very clearly was my putt i thought his ball was slightly closer than mine
00:39:01we sort of look at each other and he's like i'm like well i think it's me to go
00:39:06when he's like well i think it's me to go it's a very gamesmanshipy match play thing
00:39:13really both of us want to putt first because if you can hold that putt before your opponent
00:39:18puts pressure on them he goes well why don't we just throw a tee up for it to see who
00:39:24goes first
00:39:25and i'm like no this is the final round of the masters this isn't some like game on a
00:39:31tuesday afternoon somewhere i'm like no i wasn't going to wilt in that situation
00:39:38i was just going to stand firm so i said there's a ref ride like why don't we get him
00:39:43up to come
00:39:44and measure and he said no no it's fine it's you can go anyway i don't care
00:39:50and i just felt like that was a really big moment mceleroy putting first for birdie
00:40:09i was proud of myself for holding my grind
00:40:14now that the man is on de chambeau to answer it back he has to answer right here
00:40:27and mceleroy has told him who's the boss here
00:40:34glory will go to the second side with a four shot lead
00:40:41i felt like going into that back nine that bryson wasn't really um a factor in the tournament
00:40:47at that point
00:40:53on to the second nine the most exciting nine holes in golf plus the most pressure packed
00:41:06it was gary player the three-time masters champion who said you don't win the masters with strategy
00:41:12you win it with nerves and we're going to see some nerves tested here on that back nine today
00:41:21it's not going to make it that could go in the water yes the ripples tell the story
00:41:29this is where it started to come undone back in 2011
00:41:37you know for rory having the lead there i'm sure the memories of 2011
00:41:44going back to the 10th hole how's this tee shot going to go
00:41:53my goodness he must have hit a tree
00:41:59we'll remember what happened back in 2011
00:42:062011 was the big one where i probably had the greatest chance but i for me in my mind it
00:42:13wasn't
00:42:13just 2011 it was all the years after that where i felt like i had chances and just i didn't
00:42:19do this
00:42:19right or i didn't do that right i could go through every single year and tell you where it went
00:42:25wrong
00:42:26welcome to this tradition unlike any other
00:42:30wow he's going off sideways
00:42:34welcome to this tradition unlike any other
00:42:40how do you manage wanting to win this tournament but not the desire being so big that it becomes an
00:42:46obstacle hello friends and friends welcome to this tradition unlike any other
00:42:51it just hit off a sprinkler head on up into the azaleas do you think all the expectation about
00:42:59the kind swan has had an effect do you think you found the balance between how that motivates you
00:43:05and how that pressures you you feel the weight the scrutiny it takes to be considered the greatest
00:43:11talent in the game do you feel like you're sort of middle age now or in your prime or how
00:43:14do you how
00:43:15do you see it do you believe you'll win this if not this year some year
00:43:22trying to block out the noise is the best thing but admittedly it was hard for me to do that
00:43:31i've always been a big responder to encouragement and positive feedback
00:43:40it's all about the confidence i i find
00:43:45you see when rory started really i used to take rory out every sunday play nine holes
00:43:55i used to change all the holes on the scorecard the first hole being a par four i used to
00:44:01change it to
00:44:02a par five it encouraged rory you know so at the end of the day we used to go in
00:44:09for the coke
00:44:09a pack of the crisps and the boys and the boys said well what did you shoot today three under
00:44:14you
00:44:14know rory used to love that you know he's really in sight you know three under par that's brilliant
00:44:19rory you know and you see when rory started to shoot under par he had no fear because it was
00:44:28all in
00:44:29there so many around the world raptured by this moment anxious to see it happen
00:44:48perfect a different player today than he was in 2011
00:44:57my start on sunday in 2025 was way worse than my start in 2011
00:45:05it would have been really easy to get frustrated after that first nine
00:45:09but i think because of all that experience over the past 14 years
00:45:12i didn't panic i knew there was still a long way to go
00:45:17club comes out of his hands
00:45:22doesn't matter what a shot
00:45:29i felt like my patience was rewarded with how i played that hole
00:45:35and into the hole it's another birdie for rory mcelroy
00:45:43and the triple bogey back in 2011 is a distant memory for mcelroy
00:45:57bryson it was surprising to me that he wasn't on his game
00:46:01i think a lot of people thought he would go out there and really contend
00:46:07when you had this pairing of rory bryson in the first nine holes
00:46:12and rory's got a big lead now
00:46:15it's almost like you forgot there were other players playing in the tournament
00:46:20watching justin rose
00:46:22a few hoes ahead of rory
00:46:27long way away here for birdie at 11
00:46:29well he's going to need something special if that is going to transpire
00:46:35oh that's special
00:46:38justin rose
00:46:40not out of it yet
00:46:44with the emergence of justin on the back nine
00:46:46all of a sudden
00:46:48it's like okay
00:46:49you know here here we go
00:46:56let's head it toward the first mound
00:46:58gentle
00:47:04that is six inches away from being wet
00:47:09said all week he wasn't going to pay any attention to the leaderboards
00:47:13wonder if he took a little peek
00:47:18just right
00:47:19that's what rory's concerned there's no leaping enough because this guy is charging
00:47:24justin rose for birdie
00:47:26oh my goodness
00:47:28tied for second
00:47:32that brings pressure but
00:47:34but i still had the lead
00:47:36should rory have another stumble
00:47:40justin rose
00:47:41could be in position
00:47:46let's see if rory chooses the conservative target here on 12
00:48:01that's just fine
00:48:04i made a good two putt make three there
00:48:10i'm like i've got through 10 11 12 and even par like i'm
00:48:13very happy
00:48:17and he will march off to the 13th team
00:48:22bobby jones famously wrote
00:48:24that several tournaments have been won or lost here
00:48:28a lot of people's chances to win the masters have become unraveled on the 13th hole
00:48:37i think this is the golf tournament this shot right here
00:48:41there's bunkers to the left
00:48:43there's water to the front and the right
00:48:46and his hopes
00:48:47the first green jacket may have just sunk to the bottom of ray's creek
00:48:52now we're going into another dimension again
00:48:58you're trying to overcome all of the history
00:49:02these memories
00:49:04all these different things
00:49:06that are going through your head while you're playing that golf course
00:49:09and trying to win this massive tournament
00:49:16and that's one of the hurdles that
00:49:18i have found so hard to overcome
00:49:20is like you have to get over the demons you have on that course
00:49:23but you also have to get over
00:49:25all those other little ghosts that are lurking around the corner that aren't yours either
00:49:35so
00:49:36usually
00:49:37i would approach it as
00:49:39a hole that i can get to the green and two
00:49:41and give myself an eagle opportunity
00:49:44but i didn't want to take on too much risk
00:49:50i turn to harry and say
00:49:52at this point i've got a nice little bit of a cushion
00:49:54and i'm like do you like playing this as a three shotter
00:49:57and he's like love it
00:50:01so i hit three with off the tee
00:50:09and then i lay up with an eight iron
00:50:15the first two shots went as well as they could have
00:50:22that's that scoreboard i was talking about
00:50:23as you walk up 13 it's impossible not to see it
00:50:27tried most of the week to avoid those big white scoreboards
00:50:30which is easier said than done
00:50:33once i got to the ball
00:50:35i think justin had just made another birdie
00:50:41you're in
00:50:43are you kidding me
00:50:46and suddenly the pressure is going to become enormous on mcelroy
00:50:52there was a bit of a reaction from the car
00:51:06i'd make my backswing and at the last moment
00:51:13i sort of just leaned into it a bit
00:51:20completely tightened up
00:51:29can't explain it he's blocked this short little shot
00:51:33by miles
00:51:37another poor shot
00:51:39under the extreme pressure
00:51:40so now he's going to go for a bogey
00:51:44makes you wonder about the strategy
00:51:46of just backing off and deciding from the tee
00:51:49that you're going to play this as a three shot
00:51:51or your adrenaline your body has been conditioned
00:51:54to just go for it today
00:52:03especially the way he played those shots of seven jimmy
00:52:06when he went the nine irons through the trees
00:52:08over the trees was so happy and bouncing around
00:52:10and so aggressive
00:52:14this is crucial
00:52:16this to limit the damage
00:52:24and that's a double
00:52:26for mcelroy
00:52:27his fourth of the week
00:52:30no player has won the masters
00:52:33after making four double bogeys
00:52:35or worse
00:52:39and the masters is wide open once again
00:52:45and now the spectators these patrons are feeling that something is really brewing
00:52:50over the course of this final couple of holes
00:52:54it was the first time where i'd had a moment in the tournament where my mind
00:53:02didn't automatically go to like a positive place
00:53:06roy's lost a spit in his mouth right now
00:53:23i just gotta keep the train on the tracks now
00:53:29my thing with augusta i think during the course of my career
00:53:32it would be like one stretch that would like ruin the tournament for me
00:53:37big swing at it
00:53:39and comes up short
00:53:44because a little bit of the scar tissue had built up i was like always waiting for something bad to
00:53:50happen
00:54:06and he has now lost the lead at the 89th masters tournament
00:54:23just when you thought it was a sure thing now you're like you can't win now
00:54:29i had to go and pour rosie a drink
00:54:32calmer down
00:54:34you know
00:54:36i actually had a drink myself
00:54:37i mean i'm i know rory like the back of my hand
00:54:44you see each year coming up to the masters
00:54:48rory was always he wasn't rory
00:54:51no he was always very
00:54:55edgy is that the word
00:54:56if you talked about the masters he was a bit
00:54:59like jumpy you know
00:55:02he was trying too hard
00:55:05i don't know if i'm proud to admit this or not proud to admit this but i've tried a lot
00:55:09of things going into augusta
00:55:10whether it's getting to the tournament really early getting to the tournament really late
00:55:15not playing the par 3 tournament the day before
00:55:17playing the par 3 tournament
00:55:18not doing media one year
00:55:19playing practice rounds the weeks prior
00:55:21or not playing practice rounds a week prior
00:55:24hypnosis
00:55:26no it's not it's not like that it's not hypnosis like you think where
00:55:30you know very deep sleep
00:55:32someone taps you and you knocks you out and it you know it's it's uh it there's a little more
00:55:37science to it
00:55:41my game was excelling at like the sort of run-of-the-mill tour stop but once i got to
00:55:45the masters i would
00:55:47play well but not well enough
00:55:50people would always compare it to earlier in my career and the the major record earlier in my career
00:55:56and i started to almost resent the major championships for having such a massive
00:56:01um importance in the game it just that it started to eat away at me
00:56:09i hadn't won a major for 10 years now
00:56:14i think i lost probably a little bit of my love for the game in that time period
00:56:23you know that childlike joy and enthusiasm
00:56:28how you gonna get out of that one
00:56:32i've always been very comfortable on my own and sometimes i'm stubborn and sometimes i'm
00:56:41reluctant to reach out for help and i feel like i can figure it out my own
00:56:48but i needed to get over that
00:56:57i remember i was really struggling and i drove from the scottish open to the open championship
00:57:04of birkdale and i listened to the audiobook golf is not a game of perfect by bob rotella
00:57:10too often freud's theories are boiled down to a belief that people are the victim of
00:57:15circumstances beyond their control i don't buy that a person with great dreams can achieve great
00:57:23things a person without the confidence to pursue his or her dreams has consigned himself or herself
00:57:30to a life of frustration and mediocrity i've known bob rotella basically the whole way throughout my career
00:57:38and i'm like why don't i just call him why don't i just call him you know we're all dealing
00:57:45with doubt
00:57:46and fear failure never ruins anybody doubt and fear will kill you
00:57:54with rory i mean we prepare by anticipating we're going to miss all kinds of shots and putts
00:58:00we're going to get all kinds of bad breaks but you have to see what you want rather than what
00:58:06you
00:58:06don't want or fear might happen
00:58:13rory mcelroy has watched his lead disappear he knows the magnitude of the moment now
00:58:23rory and i talk a lot about how do you feel when you're playing your best golf you know when
00:58:28you're
00:58:28like the happiest when you're most joy-filled and you're really loving the game that you tell me you
00:58:34love when you walk off the golf course every night if you can go back to your room look in
00:58:39the mirror
00:58:39and go man i loved how i felt out there today you know you gave yourself your best chance
00:58:45and that's all we can do so can he hit one great t-shirt on the par fives and it
00:58:51changes day
00:58:59he could be blocked out he's in the fairway but he could be blocked out with his second shot
00:59:05a little grimace from him
00:59:08rory's got to play about a 20-yard hook he's hitting out of the shadows left-hand side of 15.
00:59:14yeah i mean a best case scenario is throw it in that right bunker and try and get it up
00:59:18and down
00:59:21i needed to pull something out of the bag at that point because
00:59:25you know i was going in the wrong direction when you're amped up and when you're under pressure
00:59:29those are the hardest are for me anyway they've been the hardest shots to hit
00:59:38i stood up and i'd made the most trusting committed swing
00:59:50i knew it as soon as i hit it and that's when i started to walk after it
01:00:15it was one of the most fantastic shots i've ever seen
01:00:21first of all i don't think many people would have tried it but i think he felt like he needed
01:00:24to at
01:00:24the time sometimes you feel like you need to make a shot you do it i'll remember the feeling of
01:00:32hitting
01:00:32that shot for the rest of my life
01:00:38i don't know if i'll ever hit a better golf shot
01:00:42but under that amount of pressure again in my career
01:00:52ploys to make eagle to take the lead
01:01:04rory has a chance to put a hand on the light switch right here
01:01:16those people
01:01:19he goes back to look at it there's the bad news he's got to live with this this is about
01:01:23exercising
01:01:23demons here carl and he's not done exercise yeah i don't know why he went back over here to look
01:01:28at it that was a bad stroke he knows it
01:01:32so it's a pretty still to take the lead
01:01:36it's excruciating what you've got to do to try to close this deal
01:01:42one day you know when he was a teenager i heard somebody in the crowd say
01:01:49if that kid could putt he'd win everything
01:01:57it was my least favorite part of the game growing up
01:02:01i always enjoyed the longer part of the game better i always enjoyed the driver always enjoyed
01:02:08hitting iron
01:02:11the closer you get to the hole the more tense you can be
01:02:17i always felt like well it has to feel hard because that's what it's always felt like
01:02:23and then when you feel like you've had a perfect putt that doesn't go in you start to question
01:02:28for example on 15
01:02:31i missed that putt on the low side so then when i'm hitting the putt on 16 i'm like well
01:02:36that putt at the last broke more than i thought maybe i should give it a little less break
01:02:47and then you miss it on the high side
01:02:50some putts in a row that could have easily gone down
01:02:58rose has a putt to tie the lead
01:03:07and in the hole got a chance oh wow what a putt justin rose
01:03:16no lead is safe around here
01:03:22we're all guilty at points in our careers whether it's part of your swing short game
01:03:28or on the putting green with thinking about the mechanics of how to
01:03:33reading the instruction manual how you're supposed to do it rather than just letting it happen
01:03:41it looks pretty good yes it's in the fairway he needs a birdie either on 17 or 18 to win
01:03:50it outright
01:03:53when i first helped rory with putting the brunt of what we talked about this is resilience
01:03:59you have to have that morsel in the putting green than any other part of the game because you don't
01:04:05go with 18 putts you know you miss almost every hole you're missing a putt right he's gonna have
01:04:13this putt for birdie to move to 12 under and the lead with one hole remaining when the best players
01:04:21in the world miss putts yeah they can get angry or they can get upset but they know how to
01:04:28get back
01:04:28there and and give it a chance to be great again
01:04:39rory mckelroyd will take a one stroke lead to the 72nd hole here at the 89th masters
01:04:49justin had finished at that point and then all of a sudden was like wow i you know i need
01:04:55a par to win
01:05:02how hard is this t-shot just under normal conditions well it's the narrowest on the golf course
01:05:13what a time to deliver this
01:05:17he walked after it careful it's a beauty one step closer
01:05:30and now the moment for rory mckelroy
01:05:40oh he's gone in the bunker
01:05:45he has to get up and down from the sand and if he's going to do this he will have
01:05:50done it the
01:05:51hardest hardest way imaginable i'm i don't have any words to describe what i've just seen because that's
01:05:59impossible for any top class player let alone someone as good as rory mckelroy to miss the green at 125
01:06:07yards
01:06:12if you listen to televised golf they're constantly talking about how you can't make mistakes like that
01:06:20if you want to win tournaments like this and of course everything i teach is well of course you can
01:06:26people do it all the time so how do you respond when you miss a shot just stay patient stay
01:06:39patient
01:06:41wait for good things to happen again under normal conditions he would get this up and down
01:06:54the ball was in a good spot it was in a good lie it was on the upslope i was
01:06:58like
01:06:58if you need to get a ball up and down from a bunker this is the lie that you want
01:07:26there's a putt to win the masters so you know you have the that steady murmur of the crowd that
01:07:34goes to deathly silence while you're over a putt
01:07:39it's crickets how do you stay athletic and instinctive and hit it
01:07:47and not think about everything that's at hand for the career grand slam
01:08:02the story's been written a million times
01:08:08the questions have been asked repeatedly
01:08:13when if can you do it how badly do you want it
01:08:23all of those moments lead to this
01:08:46the
01:08:47the
01:08:47the
01:08:47the
01:08:47the
01:08:47the
01:08:48the
01:08:48the
01:09:06Going to a playoff.
01:09:12After that disappointment, will he be able to regroup?
01:09:16Reset?
01:09:23I should have got it done in regulation.
01:09:26I should have made a four from where I drove that ball.
01:09:29There's just all these different things that are going through your head.
01:09:35He just wasn't up to it.
01:09:37He underperforms in the heat of battle.
01:09:41He got on the precipice of winning this tournament
01:09:43and instead of driving over the line, he hesitated.
01:09:56It's a pretty long walk from the 18th green to scoring.
01:10:00There was a definite tension in the air.
01:10:06But then I'm walking with Harry and Harry said to me, he said,
01:10:11Pal, we would have taken this position on Monday morning.
01:10:14And like it just snapped me into such a good frame of mind.
01:10:19And I was like, yeah, we would have taken this position Monday morning.
01:10:22Absolutely.
01:10:24We got on the golf cart and it was like the first bit of peace that I'd had all day.
01:10:31It was like this quiet, serene, you know, long shadows.
01:10:36Here are the birds chirping.
01:10:37I was like, this is really nice.
01:10:41It just got me thinking so positively about the moment.
01:10:46You know, I had a second chance.
01:10:54The first thing I thought was, all right, well, let's just hit the same shot
01:10:58that you just hit 10 minutes ago.
01:11:01Make the same swing and hit the same drive.
01:11:05Sudden death up the 18th for the Masters Green Jacket.
01:11:11One of these two players is going to go home absolutely crestfallen.
01:11:25And that looks good.
01:11:27He's ripped that.
01:11:28He's absolutely ripped it.
01:11:29And that one is sailing down the fairway, completely outdriven.
01:11:35Justin Rose, so much adrenaline in that.
01:11:38Two fantastic tee shots.
01:11:41JR had a really good drive and I hit a good drive.
01:11:43But JR was a good, I don't know, 30 yards behind me.
01:11:47This is a fantastic opportunity for him to go ahead and put the pressure on McElroy.
01:12:05He hit an amazing shot right at the pin.
01:12:12And I remember when it was in the air, I was just going, oh, no.
01:12:15And then, again, I had basically the same shot as I had in regulation, but I had a flat lie.
01:12:46What a shot from McElroy.
01:12:49What a shot from McElroy.
01:12:51These two Europeans are just going at it toe to toe.
01:13:05And now it all comes down to who has got the guts to hold the slippery putt.
01:13:11And Rose goes first.
01:13:31The door is open again for McElroy to finish it off.
01:13:46This is two and a half, three feet.
01:13:49What an approach shot from McElroy.
01:13:51What a way to regather himself after the disappointment in regulation play.
01:14:17Look at the long shadows.
01:14:20Symbolic this moment.
01:14:22The journey it's taken to get here.
01:14:26For all this history.
01:14:44The long journey is over.
01:14:48McElroy has his masterpiece.
01:15:05I just screamed at the top of my lungs twice, just like this visceral release that I've
01:15:15never felt before in my life. And it's like, just that moment of, it's almost like your whole
01:15:25career flashes before your eyes. And it's like all the ups and the downs and the disappointments
01:15:35and the, you know, every Sunday night driving away from that golf club, feeling disappointment.
01:15:42And you know, it made it all worth it. It was Rory McIlroy against Rory McIlroy. And that
01:15:52has been the story of his career. My wedding day was a wonderful day and Poppy being born
01:16:02was a wonderful day, but they were, they were, they were happy, joyful. This was like pure
01:16:09relief. This is done.
01:16:23And that last putt went in. You couldn't have stopped me crying for love nor money. Two
01:16:30and a half hours I cried for. You know, that's all the hurt over. It was one of the best
01:16:41things
01:16:41I've ever watched. I think a lot of the people have been on that journey with me. And I think
01:16:52to see how happy they were for me to get it done was like really meaningful and special.
01:16:59Like I never, never in my wildest dreams that I think I would get to this point. You know, as
01:17:06an eight year old,
01:17:07yes, I said, I want to win all the majors and I want to join that list of people that
01:17:11have won the Grand Slam.
01:17:14It was probably quite naive of me to dream like that in some way, but it's what always kept me
01:17:21going.
01:17:24I want to make eight year old Rory proud and make him proud that you didn't give up.
01:17:32never landed in my mind. Why not? Why is there only six people has ever done it? It must be
01:17:42very special.
01:17:43And I always knew my son was very, very special.
01:17:56Love you too. And last but certainly not least, over to my left, my family, my team.
01:18:18They've been on this journey with me the whole way through.
01:18:23They know that the burden that I've carried to, you know, come here every year and try and try and
01:18:28try again.
01:18:31And the one thing I would say to my daughter Poppy that's sitting over there, never give up on your
01:18:37dreams.
01:18:38Never ever give up on your dreams.
01:18:46It was never going to be easy. It was never going to be straightforward.
01:18:50It was always going to be a little messy.
01:18:58Yeah, was Augusta my white whale? It probably was.
01:19:01That was the white whale of my career and I'm glad that I caught it.
01:19:08I wouldn't say I'll ever tame it or I'll ever have it fully under control.
01:19:13But I think to find that persistence and to find whatever it is I needed to find within myself to
01:19:19keep coming back and to keep trying.
01:19:22That's the thing I'm proudest of.
01:19:25I'm proudest of, I'm proudest of not, not losing hope.
01:19:46Thank you, God.
01:19:47Got this back out.
