Is Tiger Woods being held to a different standard?
Transcript
00:00i guess the question would be if it weren't tiger woods if it was somebody else who was in
00:04a similar position with with any uh with any business what would be how would they be held
00:12accountable and why is tiger not held because he's made the tour and every other golfer that
00:17has ever played in the pga tour untold amounts of riches like he shifted the way that sport is
00:24in a way that we haven't seen since babe ruth in baseball where he literally tigered golf courses
00:31he brought an entire demographic to the sport he he brought like everything he accomplished on the
00:39golf course is why he's still there because they know i don't know what it is it's probably hundreds
00:45of billions of dollars over the years and people he's brought to the game that he has brought to
00:50the others around him in terms of the tv revenues go look at what the earnings were in the nf
00:54in the
00:55nfl in the pga tour before and after tiger woods was in there do you think that's all it is
01:00curtis
01:00though because like fans of the game don't have any money tied up in tiger's success but i still feel
01:09like tiger for all the mistakes that we've seen him make from his personal life and his addictions
01:17there to these car accidents he never really took a villain turn like as a as an athlete we see
01:25most
01:26athletes who are at the top of the game think of lebron with the decision right take a villainous turn
01:33where everybody hates brady they're sick of him he goes to the super bowl too much and he's cheating
01:39and blah blah blah all this stuff but with tiger it's just like he was great and then he had
01:45all this
01:46stuff sidetracking him and when he was able to get back once everybody was doing backflips because
01:51they just constantly want his redemption story it's selfish because like sorry but tiger and michael
01:57jordan to me are similar in that regard both goats michael certainly had his demons very i mean a lot
02:05of
02:06things we don't really know that are true but we think with gambling and the two years out of the
02:11sport playing baseball like michael jordan and tiger woods both had specific rules created for
02:18them and that wasn't like the brady rule going after the knee i mean like holding your nose and
02:23tolerating things that are unseemly away from the course it's people like tiger like and you're right
02:28there's no like no villainous role there people like tiger it's like they feel bad for him they're
02:33like oh it's tiger we want it you know if and you brought up a good point right if it
02:38was lebron
02:39james people would be like get him out of there oh totally get him out of there if it was
02:42brady
02:42people would be like firing from fox so it's just like people like him they want to feel bad for
02:48him
02:48and they feel like oh he's just doing it to himself this is sandy hi sandy hey sandy uh love
02:56the show
02:57everyone and um i i wanted to bring up matthew perry because i think you know there's something
03:03else going on here wiggy i love your perspective um i think it's the one that most people have
03:10curtis i love your perspective because you've lived it you know i think the story you tell about being on
03:17the highway and then going and buying the gin if you read matthew perry's book guy on top of the
03:22world
03:22had everything everything and he he refers to what eventually took him as the monster the monster
03:30was constantly on him it wanted to kill him he wanted to live yeah and it just he just could
03:37not
03:37i mean he went on the book tour he he kicked it he was helping people he dies from the
03:43thing he was
03:43most afraid of ketamine he he just could not kick it he had his colon explode on him yeah he
03:50was on a
03:51bag for over a year so there's something else going on in life where you've just got he started
03:58off because he had alcohol he tried to kick it he he did and then he has a back injury
04:03and he goes on
04:04the drugs he could never kick it and that's what seems to happen in this tiger woods case and we
04:10all pray for him we pray for everybody that has these problems but there's something else curtis can
04:16speak more to it he's lived it yeah but well it's inconceivable for people like us that haven't
04:21well he may you know if he if he doesn't if he's not granted another pass he may end up
04:29going to jail
04:29for this so maybe that will change no you're looking no i don't think he'll go to jail for and
04:34i think
04:34you know it just i think mego might have said this off air maybe or maybe you said it on
04:41air it just
04:41maybe this is the point where he realizes like i got kids i don't think it's going to be because
04:47he
04:47almost lost his leg in the other accident and he's still out doing it so then maybe it is and
04:53if it
04:54isn't then he just goes back to being tiger woods and you know he'll be involved in the pga in
04:59some
04:59form some fashion and you know and then we just now you're just if you're a tiger woods fan all
05:06you're
05:06doing is praying like okay if there is another situation he doesn't kill himself or kill somebody else
05:11this is john from gardner hey john hey good morning good folks great first of all i resent that
05:17comment this 71 year old resents that comment to that 54 year old a big panucci fan are you john
05:24that was funny um listen it might be there's a lot of complications in this and that and i've been
05:32sober quite a while there's an old saying for alkies for the rest of you folks on a tuesday night
05:38you
05:39take a drink maybe you take a second you go home you have dinner whatever for me and curtis we
05:44take
05:44i take a drink the drink takes me and then i'm let me say that it's simple saying i'm screwing
05:50it up
05:50the man takes a drink the drink takes a drink and the drink takes the man and will you that
05:56wiggy that
05:56might be on a tuesday night when i get hammered when i'm not supposed to when i got work or
06:00whatever
06:00the next morning but in the longer term over time that's the dynamic that goes on that once an alky
06:08or an addict like me and curtis take a drink that takes hold and then it takes us and in
06:15life
06:15in addiction in the big picture the drug the drink takes our regular our normal lives away from us and
06:22puts us in this place that's bad and i didn't have any big legal issues or health issues it was
06:28just
06:28time and different things motivate people to get sober but in the big dynamic of an addict's life
06:35they've got to get away from that first one and then continue not to because as soon as i take
06:40a
06:40drink if i take a drink god forbid tomorrow then it's taking me in and who knows where yeah might
06:46be
06:46just a one-time thing i know i'm rambling on no i no i i appreciate the perspective and it's
06:52and it's
06:53it's very easy to look at it from the outside and judge either way i think people tend to forgive
07:01tiger because they he's he's a he's a great guy when you you're impressed by what he's accomplished
07:09in his life um you you look at his upbringing and you go wow there was a lot of pressure
07:16you know
07:16his dad when he was seven years old said he's going to be a transformational right uh individual
07:24when it comes to humanity right like i i mean it's a lot of pressure to put on somebody and
07:29mikerwood's won a major in the most dominating fashion in the history of it and his father
07:36couldn't golf there he is a legitimate groundbreaking transformational figure in the history of america
07:44not just sports he changed golf he integrated it in a way that would never have happened
07:52if he hadn't got there and he overcame a lot a lot in his life he was he was the
07:58next thing for
07:59since he was on that sullivan show ed sullivan show when he was four years old so mego's right
08:05he's never been the villain like he's always like people have always loved tiger for whatever reason
08:11that is the fact that you think about some of this we're not just talking about the addiction
08:15stuff right where people would criticize other athletes in other sports for for drinking and
08:21driving the fact the other fact that that this guy was banging everything that you know whether
08:27they worked at perkins denny's or ihop and he was married with kids like think about how many times
08:32we sit here and criticize athletes for stepping out on their wife doing all types of stuff and we're like
08:39oh this guy's horrible person he don't deserves to be doing this that and the other whatever it is
08:43because look at he's got his wife and a young baby at home he's out here hanging out with strippers
08:48and people just like kind of said oh 508 texter says bring up exactly what you're talking about
08:55it's crazy how many people feel bad for tiger right especially after the sex scandal who else have we
09:03as a collective population ever done that for think about this we and i don't say we i just kind
09:09of put
09:09myself in that collective media they were looking for every angle possible about lebron james walking
09:17out of some french restaurant at night and the guy has never had any like real issues stepping outside
09:25his wife or and they were looking for every possible way to start a rumor about how bad this
09:32guy was as a husband when there's actual like documented knowing that tiger was doing this stuff
09:39and it was just like and and i don't know why mego i mean you asked the question why people
09:44have never
09:45looked at him as a villain and i don't know what that is yeah i do think though there is
09:50a large swath of
09:52the population that watches and hate watches like there there are people that view him as a villain
