00:07Welcome to Mojo Plays, and with the Nintendo's Switches and Steam's Deck, it's all too easy to forget there were
00:14entire generations of handheld devices with glorious games that we might never get to play again without shelling out hundreds
00:21of dollars to relive our childhoods.
00:23Yeah, well they cost me a lot. More dull than you make in a year.
00:25Oh yeah? Which year? I've had a couple good ones.
00:27Oh really?
00:28Okay, one.
00:29Yeah.
00:30Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel, and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:35videos.
00:38Astro Boy Omega Factor.
00:48Man, we missed the good old days of a solid 2D shooter.
00:51Omega Factor is the epitome of what the handheld genre was created for.
00:56Simple pick-up-and-play fun.
00:58The gorgeous visuals pop off the screen, the controls are simple to master, and the gameplay is easy to understand,
01:04but has a surprising amount of depth for those who go looking for it.
01:07Overall, Omega Factor is one of those rare games where every element comes together perfectly for a once-in-a
01:14-generation experience.
01:16Not only does it manage to perfectly recapture the magic of Astro Boy in every pixel, but the game feels
01:22like a labor of love for the IP, and one that anyone who still happens to have a Game Boy
01:27Advance lying around needs to find a way to experience sooner than later.
01:36Kill up, kill up, kill up, kill up!
01:42Kid Icarus Uprising.
01:43You knock it off!
01:44You knock it off!
01:44You just screwing all the watch.
01:45Whatever you want to see out of misery.
01:46Can I mention I'm starting to think well?
02:01Um...
02:02Kid Icarus Uprising released.
02:02Keeping his only other game locked to the 3DS isn't doing anything to help maintain his credibility.
02:09Ditching the platforming gameplay of his OG adventures, the new Kid Icarus was a wisecracker in this third-person shooter
02:16full of challenging bosses, expansive environments, and intense on-rails shooting galleries.
02:21Really, the only thing holding the game back was the convoluted control scheme, relying on the stylus on the bottom
02:27touch screen for aiming.
02:29However, this is something that could be easily remedied with a port and some adjustments.
02:34It's just up to Nintendo if they want to make the effort to give Kid another chance on their shiny
02:39new hardware.
02:40I am Pit, servant of the goddess of light, and you are history!
02:46What was that all about?
02:48Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure.
02:59Falling smack on both sides of the abysmal Sonic 06 release, DS players got some of the best Sonic games
03:05since the Genesis era.
03:06Combining elements of Sonic's 2D glory days with 3D graphics in 2.5D and 3D sections,
03:12gameplay takes place across both screens with either Sonic or Blaze the Cat zipping around levels at top speed, jumping
03:20between the top and bottom screens with ease.
03:22Gameplay itself is quintessential Sonic, but that's what made it so much fun.
03:27The goal of the game was, as it has always been with the series, gotta go fast.
03:32The only downside was that due to the speed of the games, they were relatively short, but a grading system
03:38gave players a reason to replay levels.
03:40The use of the dual screen would make porting the game difficult, so without a DS, these adventures are likely
03:46to zip by you in a blue blur.
03:54Wario Land 2
03:55Believe it or not, there was a time when Wario was more than just a greedy, selfish, gold-obsessed rival
04:01for Mario.
04:02Before he went completely insane with his series of minigames, he had his own platforming adventures in which he was
04:08a greedy, selfish, gold-obsessed...
04:11However, these weren't simple clones of the Mario formula.
04:15Wario Land 2 focused on exploration and puzzle solving rather than perfect platforming precision.
04:21Wario is invincible, allowing him to be resistant to damage, but he can gain new abilities when he does take
04:27damage, which in turn can unlock hidden areas, which can also lead to one of five different endings.
04:33Wario might be a joke character in many Mario fans' eyes, but his solo adventures remained some of the best
04:40the Game Boy had to offer.
04:42Too bad these days, that's the only way you'll get to play them.
04:45Super Mario 3D Land
04:56While we did get the Wii U Super Mario 3D World on Switch, unfortunately, the 3DS-only 3D Land is
05:03still trapped on the increasingly retro handheld.
05:06However, there are fans who prefer 3D Land over 3D World.
05:10Despite being on the handheld, 3D Land somehow feels bigger, with more variety to its level design and mechanics, whereas
05:183D World's levels are designed to be more approachable, given its focus on multiplayer.
05:23Many gameplay innovations in 3D Land have made their way into modern 3D Mario games, in particular, Super Mario Odyssey.
05:30Given 3D Land's use of the stereoscopic 3D as one of its core gameplay features, porting the game could prove
05:37to be tricky, but getting a 3D Land and 3D World re-release combo would introduce players who missed the
05:443DS generation to one of Mario's best 3D adventures.
05:57Pokemon Pinball
05:58Pokemon has had no shortage of spin-off titles during its explosive takeover of gaming in the late 90s.
06:05Seriously, try to name 150 real-world animals.
06:09Now name all 150 first-generation Pokemon.
06:12Exactly.
06:13However, none of these spin-off concepts were as odd as Pokemon Pinball.
06:17Maybe the Pokemon trading card Game Boy game, which was just Pokemon with cards, but Pinball was a surprisingly good
06:24time.
06:24While the base game is just basically Pinball, occasionally wild Pokemon will appear that you must capture by either hitting
06:31them directly or hitting specific areas on the play field.
06:35Not only was it an interesting way to catch them all, but it was also a solid Pinball experience for
06:40those with no interest in Pokemon.
06:42Sadly, both the Game Boy Color original and the advanced version Ruby and Sapphire have managed to evade trainers on
06:49modern hardware for over two decades now.
06:52Banjo Kazooie, Grunty's Revenge.
07:00The collect-a-thon's Banjo Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are still widely regarded as some of the best platformers on
07:07the N64 besides Mario.
07:09While the Bear and Bird's N64 adventures continue to receive heaps of praise and accolades, their often forgotten Game Boy
07:16Advance adventure is left completely out of their history.
07:19Taking place between the events of those two acclaimed titles, Grunty's Revenge manages to shrink down the traditionally enormous adventures
07:26of the duo to only five levels.
07:28This works in the game's on-the-go design, as does the lower difficulty of gameplay.
07:34However, all the elements fans love about the game's console counterparts are here.
07:38The collecting, platforming, and traditionally funny writing are all present, just on a smaller scale.
07:45Given its obscurity on the handheld, most fans don't even know this title exists.
07:50Due to Microsoft's acquisition of Rare, we'll likely never see it playable anywhere but the GBA.
08:03Soul Sacrifice
08:05How I'd wished... I could keep my power from you.
08:17With some notable exceptions, Sony has done a decent job of porting their PS Vita titles to modern hardware.
08:24But that doesn't mean some interesting titles don't slip through the cracks.
08:28On the surface, Soul Sacrifice appears as a typical action RPG.
08:33But it's the sacrifice part of the game's title that makes the gameplay so intriguing.
08:37During combat, if players take too much damage, they can sacrifice parts of their body to unleash devastating magic attacks.
08:45However, the trade-off is, depending on which body part you choose to sacrifice, can also affect players with debilitating
08:51status effects,
08:52such as blurred vision for sacrificing your eyes.
08:55The concept is ridiculously cool and offers a wealth of buffs and debuffs depending on your choices,
09:01giving players quite a bit of customization during combat.
09:04However, whether it was the focus on multiplayer or the game's obscurity, Sony has yet to port the game to
09:09PS4 or PS5.
09:11Could you walk over an ally's corpse to achieve your goals?
09:16For that's the sort of metal the ordeal demands.
09:19Boktai, the sun is in your hand.
09:21Ever the innovator, there really is nothing else like Boktai, the sun is in your hand, on the Game Boy
09:27Advance.
09:27Combining elements of stealth for traditional RPG mechanics, that's not what makes this vampire hunting adventure so unique.
09:34Instead, it's the solar sensor on the game cartridge.
09:38Depending on how much direct sunlight the game cartridge takes in can affect the power of your solar gun in
09:43-game, as well as how quickly it charges.
09:46Combined with incredible level and enemy design, this element is also utilized in some of the game's puzzles,
09:52as well as to get you out of your comfort zone and into the real world.
09:56However, it's this untraditional approach to its gameplay that would likely make it difficult to port to anything without the
10:02solar sensor.
10:03However, given its rarity and price these days, good luck finding a copy that doesn't break the bank.
10:10Nintendogs and Cats
10:16This one is bizarre simply for the potential revenue the return of the series could bring with re-releases on
10:23modern hardware.
10:24Nintendogs and Cats, a concept that theoretically should have only appealed to a small demographic of players,
10:29ended up being one of the highest selling franchises on both the DS and 3DS.
10:34The idea of caring for a virtual pet was nothing new, but the idea of players not only caring for
10:40their little pups and kittens,
10:42but being able to directly interact with them via the touch screen and stylus, added an entirely new level of
10:47depth to the pet sim genre.
10:49With numerous breeds of both cats and dogs for players to adopt, care for, and even train,
10:55the appeal of the series has never dissipated.
10:57It's just Nintendo has abandoned all our pets to increasingly obscure hardware.
11:03The Switch's on-the-go nature is perfectly suited for a new generation of pet owners.
11:14Mario & Luigi, Bowser's Inside Story
11:29We're putting Bowser's Inside Story on this list just because it's a personal favorite,
11:34but any one of the Mario & Luigi games could have taken this spot except Superstar Saga, which has made
11:40its way to Switch Online.
11:42Despite getting a new entry in the series with brothership, it felt like some of that old-school magic of
11:47the classic series was missing.
11:49Unlike other Mario games, Mario & Luigi had the brothers teaming up for some turn-based RPG goodness and, most
11:56of all, genuine comedy.
11:57The scripts for these titles are sharply written, and the turn-based combat with quick-time events keeps you consistently
12:03engaged to nail attack patterns for additional damage.
12:07The Mario & Luigi series gives the brothers, and all the major characters of the Mushroom Kingdom, a chance to
12:12develop their personalities much further than the usual platformers,
12:16and the series is all the better for it.
12:24Professor Layton series
12:38Another case of an entire franchise being completely absent from modern consoles,
12:43the Professor Layton series has some of the best modern puzzle games of the last two decades.
12:47Without ports of any entry, including the crossover with Ace Attorney, entire generations will go without knowing of the Professor's
12:55brilliance.
12:56The series defined modern puzzle games with brilliantly written characters and mysteries.
13:01Their inventive and brain-teasing puzzles make you feel like a true detective for uncovering the clues and solving the
13:06mystery.
13:07With a handful of games, each improving on the last, it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine a bundle compiling
13:13all these games into one collection,
13:14but until then, this is one mystery the Professor won't be able to solve.
13:28Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
13:31We have plenty of time. Sooner or later, I'm sure it'll all come back to you.
13:37Wait! This isn't our official mission, is it?
13:41With the recent release of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1, we can only hope that along with
13:46Portable Ops,
13:47Acid, and the often forgotten Game Boy entry Metal Gear Ghost Babble, we'll find their way to modern consoles.
13:53For the time being, though, you're going to need to gather at least two different handhelds to play some of
13:58the best Metal Gear games on the go.
14:00Peace Walker was later ported to the Xbox 360 and PS3 and is still playable digitally via Xbox, but the
14:07rest, in particular Portable Ops, is still trapped on the PSP.
14:12Despite being a handheld version of Metal Gear, Portable Ops introduced several game mechanics that would be later integral in
14:18the series, including squad recruitment.
14:20While not as integral to the overall Metal Gear timeline as other entries, to get the complete Metal Gear experience,
14:27these titles are essential for die-hard fans.
14:39Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories
14:43He said you'd have some money for me.
14:45Sure, sure.
14:46Well, I ain't a bank.
14:47I don't have it on me, but I'll take you to it.
14:51GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are widely regarded as not only some of the best games on the
14:56PS2, but the progenitors of the deluge of open-world sandbox games we're still suffering through today.
15:03Those games are and always will be classics because Rockstar knows their craft.
15:07The PSP entries Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories might not be as grand in scale as their big
15:13console brothers, but are still solid enough entries that expand on the world and characters of each entry.
15:19Both were later ported to the PS2, but that collection is also locked to the PS2, while the titles proper
15:26still need a PSP to do your crime shenanigans on the go.
15:29Given the fact that both entries are almost always overlooked during conversations about the GTA series, we don't really see
15:36these games getting a definitive edition treatment anytime soon.
15:40Hey, hey, so there he is, huh?
15:43Hey, hey.
15:43So listen, Tony, I know you did a good thing first, and I know you've been lying low for a
15:48long time, so I want you to take it easy for a while, huh?
15:51Fire Emblem Awakening
15:52The Fire Emblem series is experiencing a renaissance in popularity after years of obscurity.
15:58That's mostly thanks to entries like Fire Emblem Awakening, which was the entry point for a number of its now
16:04passionate fanbase.
16:06Everything about this entry came together harmoniously.
16:09From the combat, the music, the characters, and the tightly constructed narrative, everything about the title worked and connected with
16:15players in a way the series had previously struggled with.
16:18With the most recent Switch entries becoming overnight hits, selling millions of copies, and achieving resounding critical acclaim,
16:25many players now familiar with the series will never get to experience the title that made Fire Emblem a household
16:30name alongside the rest of Nintendo's library
16:33because Nintendo seems complacent to leave their best entries stuck on their now dead and increasingly expensive handheld.
16:39The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds
16:47One of the most surprising sequels of the renowned Legend of Zelda series, A Link Between Worlds, brought players back
16:53to the realm of Hyrule as well as A Link to the past Link and Zelda.
16:57Borrowing elements of some of the best in the series in the years between entries, A Link Between Worlds is
17:02one of the best Zelda games fans will likely never get to experience ever again.
17:07That's because, alongside other entries such as Phantom Hourglass, Nintendo has yet to port any of the DS or 3DS
17:14exclusive titles to their modern Switch.
17:17Furthermore, rather than porting the excellent updated versions of Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora's Mask 3D, Nintendo instead gave
17:25us the base N64 versions.
17:27Yes, they still play great, but the 3D editions play so much better, and the updated visuals bring their roles
17:35to life in a way the N64 versions simply can't.
17:39A true crime against the fandom.
17:48Metroid Samus Returns
17:57Besides obviously Metroid Prime 2 and 3, Samus Returns is the only Metroid game unplayable on modern hardware.
18:05At least out of the entries we actually care about.
18:09No one was asking for you, Federation Force!
18:11A remake of the equally handheld Metroid 2 Return of Samus, Samus Returns is widely regarded as one of the
18:18best 2D entries before Metroid Dread stole that title, along with many gameplay mechanics innovated by this title.
18:25Although the game is exclusive to the 3DS, the bottom screen is primarily used for map navigation and power-up
18:31management, meaning translating the game to the Switch should be relatively easy with only a few button prompt changes.
18:37However, just like with many of their titles locked on the DS or 3DS, Nintendo doesn't seem too interested in
18:44investing the time and resources to alter the game to their modern machines.
18:56Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
19:09Final Fantasy Tactics is generally regarded as a bit more hardcore than the traditional mainline numbered entries, focusing on deep
19:17strategic combat and dark mature politically laden narratives.
19:21However, that being said, Tactics Advance is nothing like those other Tactics entries.
19:26Instead, Tactics Advance tells a far more light-hearted tale about a group of children getting isekai'd into a storybook
19:33version of their traditional Ivelisse.
19:35Even the gameplay is simplified to coincide with this lighter tone, still offering the strategic combat the series is known
19:42for, but far less punishing.
19:44The game's light-hearted tone has endeared it to players who grew up with the handheld journey, but unfortunately, like
19:49everything else we loved as kids,
19:51we can't go back and replay this wonderful game without first unearthing our past and digging up our Game Boy
19:57Advance and praying that it still works.
20:04Uncharted Golden Abyss
20:15Given the series is a staple of the PlayStation brand, it's truly a mystery why Nathan Drake's only handheld outing
20:21isn't playable anywhere besides the PS Vita.
20:24With so many other titles making the jump to digital storefronts, the omission of Golden Abyss is a noticeable one.
20:30While not critical to the overarching narrative of Nate's adventures as a prequel to the series,
20:36Golden Abyss is still a worthy addition to the Uncharted catalog and a surprisingly solid adventure given its portability.
20:42Golden Abyss made use of nearly every gimmick the PS Vita had, but most of these features could be toggled
20:48off even on the Vita,
20:50so it's unlikely the game's mechanics are holding it back.
20:53Maybe one day we'll get a true Nathan Drake collection with every adventure in a single release,
20:59but for now, you'll be stuck searching the depths of your closet for your Vita to take Nate on one
21:04more adventure.
21:05Heard it a million times.
21:07Yeah, you know what, I just met you, I'm pretty sure I've heard this story.
21:10Pokemon Generations 1 through 7
21:18Out of everything on this list, this one is by far the most demanded and the most baffling, given the
21:25property's enduring popularity.
21:28Breaking out in the late 90s, Pokemon has endured as one of the most profitable and recognizable brands in the
21:34world.
21:35With millions of fans catching and training to be the very best from the Game Boy to the 3DS,
21:41but Nintendo refuses to let these millions of fans replay the classics that made the franchise the international mega-hit
21:48that it is.
21:49Likely, Nintendo believes allowing players to replay the older titles will affect the sales of the newer titles,
21:54and honestly, they're right.
21:56These games were when Pokemon was at its best, narratively and gameplay-wise.
22:01However, I know that we and the millions of Pokemon fans would literally pay almost anything Nintendo asked for the
22:08chance to replay these classics again.
22:11The money is right there for the taking, Nintendo!
22:18Which handheld game do you still play today, or wish you could replay again?
