02:04Bye, Adrienne.
02:14Well, young lady, you've taken your time.
02:17I haven't got all day, you know.
02:20You scuffed your new shoes, kicking that nasty stone.
02:23I told you about that before, haven't I?
02:27Well?
02:30Yes, it's a very silly habit.
02:33You don't deserve nice things if you're going to treat them like that.
02:36What do you say?
02:39It's fine, you've taken.
02:41That's right.
02:42Now, don't do it again.
02:43That's the only way I know you're really sorry, isn't it?
02:47Come along now.
02:48Hold my hand.
02:49I don't want to.
02:50Don't be silly, dear.
02:52We've got to cross the road.
03:07And we've shown the draft figures on the valuation report to Mr Mackenzie's company to see if they have any
03:13comments to make.
03:14There would appear to be some difference in value on one of the South London sites, where our figure seems
03:19to be rather lower than that expected by the company, but otherwise, no problem.
03:23David, I hate to interrupt you, but this is a very important matter to me, and you seem to be
03:27making rather light of it.
03:28The value of the site, as far as we're concerned, is some $375,000.
03:33It's one of our major assets, and your firm's valuation is only $255,000.
03:41Now, that's a substantial difference and cuts the net surplus of our assets.
03:45We're going to have to look at this again urgently, or I can't see how the flotation can be dealt
03:49with on time.
03:50I am not going to agree to any issue of my shares on the stock exchange unless we get fair
03:55value.
03:56I am not going to sell myself cheap.
03:57Well, Mr Mackenzie, I appreciate your concern, but the whole idea of these reports is to produce an independent valuation
04:04of your company's assets.
04:05I'm afraid you can't try to influence the valuers to give a figure that isn't reasonable.
04:08I'm not trying to do anything of the sort, Mr Sullivan.
04:11I'm just not going to have my company undervalued.
04:13We bought this site not long ago, and we had an independent valuation from another firm of repute, and they
04:18agreed with a figure of $375,000.
04:21Well, that's all pretty well, but we had to listen to the values of this issue.
04:25May I remind you, Mr Mackenzie, it was you who suggested Isaacson Sons in the first place.
04:29May I remind you, Mr Sullivan, that it was you that suggested this flotation in the first place.
04:33That's why we're all sitting here right now.
04:35Yes, well, we don't want everything to be held out by the matter of one valuation, do we?
04:39It's not a question of one valuation.
04:41It's a question of whether the figures are accurate.
04:44This is a property and development company.
04:47It's value is based on its assets as well as its earnings.
04:51Quite so, Mr Mackenzie.
04:52Mr Isaacs pets you look at the valuation once again, just in case there may have been some error.
04:57Not of course that we want you to increase your figure unless you feel completely justified in doing so.
05:23You're coming for coffee, Lisa.
05:24Sorry, I can't.
05:25You're not babysitting again.
05:28Just visiting.
05:29Proper little Jewish mother you turned out to be.
05:32And so young already yet, my life.
05:48She's got that kid on the brain.
05:51I wonder.
05:52It's obvious.
05:53She's always round there.
05:54Well, it could be a sprout to catch a mackerel.
05:59Mr Duggan, any problems on the legal side?
06:02Only that we've got a very tight schedule and I'm at the mercy of the local authorities in producing searches
06:06on the properties.
06:07We've had about 60% back in so far.
06:10Because of the time factor, I've got a contingency plan to do some of the searches by hand.
06:14If that's acceptable to the reporting solicitors.
06:17Harold, would that be acceptable to you?
06:19Well, Andrew, it's not something we like, you know.
06:22Personal searches are really only as good as the person who makes them.
06:25If they have to be made, may I suggest that my assistant Miss Harris accompanies Mr Duggan's representative and I
06:30think that would then satisfy us.
06:38Can't I have a hard-boiled egg?
06:40No, you can't.
06:42They give you constipation.
06:43They don't?
06:44Now, we don't want an argument, do we?
06:48Eat up your nice egg like a good girl.
06:50Then you can go out and play.
06:52I'm not hungry.
06:54Don't be silly.
06:56Of course you are.
06:57Big girl like you.
06:59What nonsense.
07:01Please, may I get down?
07:03When you've finished your tea.
07:05I'm sick.
07:07No, you don't.
07:09That's a fit.
07:10Runny eggs always make me feel sick.
07:15Just you stay where you are, young lady.
07:19Or there'll be trouble.
07:30Miss Isaacs?
07:31Hello, Mrs Deacon.
07:33Mr McKenzie isn't home yet.
07:35It was Adrian I came to see.
07:38May I come in?
07:46Oh, Lisa, I knew it was you.
07:48Hello, darling.
07:51Oh, Lisa, I'm so glad you've come.
07:54I didn't say you could get down, did I?
07:57Well, she's down now.
07:58She hasn't finished her tea.
08:00Well, maybe she's not hungry.
08:01No, I'm not.
08:03There you are.
08:03It's a waste of good food.
08:06Never mind, it won't break the bank.
08:08And it's very bad for her to get her own way all the time.
08:11Oh, Mrs Deacon, it's lovely to get your own way sometimes.
08:14We all like it.
08:17I'm sure you'd like to clear these things away so you don't want us under your feet.
08:20We're going to the garden, shall we, sweetheart?
08:22I'll give you an aeroplane.
08:23Yes, please.
08:28I gather you're all for it.
08:31Not exactly.
08:33That's what David seems to think.
08:34Jean doesn't mind, he keeps saying, so why should you?
08:38I must say, I do hate being the odd man out in all this.
08:41A rotten old spoil sport when all I'm trying to do is be sensible.
08:44You know, all I said was that as Jane is 21, there's not much point in my objecting.
08:48But you can make Lisa wait two years.
08:50I won't.
08:51Surely.
08:53A lot can happen in two years.
08:54She could change her mind.
08:56I mean, can we really make her wait?
08:58Well, legally we can, of course.
09:01What's the good of that?
09:02She'll make life unbearable.
09:04She might even elope.
09:06Oh, everyone thinks she's so sweet and amenable.
09:09Underneath she's pig-headed, believe you me.
09:11I'm sorry, you're really worried about it, aren't you?
09:14It's not that I don't like Jamie.
09:17You know that.
09:19They are too young.
09:20They've hardly been out with anyone else.
09:22These religious differences do make problems.
09:26I don't care what anyone says.
09:29Well, you found that out with Robert, didn't you?
09:31Yes.
09:33So, if the issue takes place on the Friday of that week,
09:36the ads will appear on Wednesday and Thursday.
09:39During the preceding 14 days,
09:41it's our intention to make sure the issue is well publicised.
09:45I believe the firm of public relations we nominated
09:47has already been accepted and begun work.
09:51Is that right, Mr. McKenzie?
09:53Right, that's right.
09:56Very necessary evil, as far as I'm concerned.
09:59Well, I hope as time goes by and you start to get results,
10:02you'll find them far less evil and even more necessary.
10:07You see, Mr. McKenzie, as head of this company,
10:09it's in your own interest to get as much exposure as possible.
10:12As far as the public's concerned,
10:14you've come from nowhere
10:15into a position of financial importance in this industry.
10:19And I'm hoping the small investor
10:21will back your success story.
10:23People do like that kind of thing, you know.
10:28I don't know.
10:30Maybe it's just a case of sour grapes.
10:34What?
10:35About Lisa, I mean.
10:38Because she's young and pretty
10:40and thin.
10:42Look at me.
10:43You look fine.
10:44Oh, thanks.
10:45You're a true friend.
10:49Anyway, it's all ahead for her,
10:50whichever way you look at it,
10:51and downhill for me.
10:54Has something happened?
10:57Oh.
10:59The man I told you about.
11:01I still see him,
11:02but it's not the same anymore.
11:06I'm sorry.
11:07Serves me right.
11:08It's a judgment on me, don't you think?
11:09No, I never said that.
11:10I'm sorry.
11:11I'm being unfair.
11:12You've still got David.
11:14Here.
11:20There was a while when I thought
11:21that Robbie and I might get back together,
11:23but it didn't work.
11:27Gina, I'm sorry.
11:31I didn't realise.
11:33Oh, well.
11:34It was silly of me.
11:38What did you take with you
11:40on this valuation, Charles?
11:41Jamie McKenzie.
11:46Well, there's certainly a discrepancy
11:48in these measurements.
11:49Who actually took the measurements?
11:50Well, I did some, David,
11:52and Jamie did the rest.
11:55Well, you've got a scale plan here.
11:57Got a rule on you.
12:09There's an obvious error here.
12:11This is 180 feet,
12:12and we've got it down as 120.
12:13Well, that's a transcription error, then.
12:16Perhaps.
12:18Any luck?
12:20Yes.
12:20I think there has been a mistake.
12:22I knew it.
12:24We'll send somebody down
12:25to do a physical check.
12:27Don't you worry about it.
12:32Well, I think we'll be off.
12:38Bye-bye, David.
12:40Bye, David.
12:44Care for a drink?
12:46Ah, well, I should really be getting home.
12:49I've got some excellent malt.
12:51Ought to be right off your street.
12:53Well, I'll soon be fine.
12:59Hello?
13:02Yes, sir, just a moment.
13:07Miss Isaacs,
13:08telephone for you.
13:15Who is it?
13:16Mr. McKenzie.
13:22Hello, Robert.
13:23Hello, Lisa.
13:24Look, I'm at a meeting
13:25and it may drag on,
13:26so I don't know what time I'll be home.
13:28Could you tell Mrs. Deacon
13:29I may be late for supper?
13:32I'm sorry I won't see you.
13:35Well, I'd better go now.
13:37Good luck with your meeting.
13:45He says he'll be late home for supper.
13:48That's nothing new.
13:51I'll have to go soon, Mrs. Deacon.
13:53Yes.
13:53I expect you will.
13:57For you?
13:58God forbid.
13:59Of course, silly of me,
14:00it's a filthy, southern habit,
14:01but I do have a heavy night ahead.
14:05Well, what did you think?
14:07About what?
14:07About the meeting.
14:08I thought it went very well.
14:09I suppose so,
14:10but it must be costing a lot of money, eh?
14:13Get all these people here together
14:14for hours and end it.
14:16Trust you to think of that.
14:18You know, we really have great confidence
14:20in this issue.
14:21In fact,
14:23if you want to raise some capital anytime,
14:24we'd be only too happy to let you pledge
14:26some of your shares
14:27against a personal loan.
14:32Is that you, Jamie?
14:34No, it's a burglar.
14:40You always say that.
14:42So do you.
14:43How was night school?
14:44It was okay.
14:49It was okay.
14:52I'm glad you're still up.
14:55Can I talk to you?
14:58Is it about Lisa?
14:59Not exactly.
15:01Mum, I found a flat.
15:04It's only two rooms, kitchen and bathroom,
15:06but it's nicely furnished
15:07and it's only ten minutes from here
15:09so I'll be able to pop in
15:10and see you every day.
15:12Once a week will do fine.
15:14You won't mind?
15:15Of course I won't mind.
15:17You're bound to leave home one day.
15:18Can you afford it, that's all?
15:20Just about.
15:21It's a third of my salary.
15:23Well, a bit more actually.
15:25I'll be getting a rise soon.
15:26Mr Isaac's very pleased with me.
15:28I'm sure he is.
15:30You won't be lonely.
15:31That's my problem, Jamie.
15:32Nothing to do with you.
15:34Maybe you could share with someone from the hospital.
15:36Don't you worry about me.
15:37I'm fine.
15:39All right.
15:40I'll say goodnight then.
15:41Night.
15:43Thanks, Mum.
15:44What for?
15:45You know.
15:59I'm going up.
16:01Look,
16:02I really do think it would be safer
16:03to let them get engaged.
16:05What do you mean, safer?
16:08Well, they'd be less likely to do anything silly,
16:10like run off.
16:11Oh,
16:12do you think I haven't thought about that?
16:14It just seems so hypocritical,
16:16pretending to condone it when I'm dead against the idea.
16:18I think we have more chance of making them wait that way,
16:21maybe even changing their minds.
16:23After all,
16:24the more we oppose it,
16:25the more determined they're going to be.
16:42what is it?
16:44It's nothing.
16:45Oh,
16:45you cry like this for nothing.
16:49I didn't mean you to hear.
16:51Truly,
16:51I did.
16:55You are.
17:07I don't know what to do.
17:11Is there something you want to tell me?
17:14No.
17:15Are you sure?
17:17I'm not pregnant,
17:18if that's what you think.
17:20Thank God.
17:22Mummy,
17:23you're so old-fashioned.
17:24I wouldn't be such an idiot.
17:26Anyway,
17:27Jamie's just not like them.
17:29They're all like that.
17:31They all prefer girls who say no.
17:33They all want to marry virgins.
17:36Oh,
17:36it's stupid,
17:37it's unreasonable,
17:38but
17:38that's the way they are
17:40and we have to put up with it.
17:42It's all nonsense,
17:43what the papers say
17:44about the permissive society
17:46and all that.
17:47It doesn't work,
17:48believe me.
17:50I'm not really,
17:51I'm so miserable.
17:55Do you really love him that much?
17:57Yes,
17:58but it's hopeless,
18:00it's impossible.
18:01Don't be silly,
18:02darling.
18:03Of course it is.
18:05Oh,
18:06I'm sorry.
18:07I just didn't leave her.
18:09I don't like her.
18:19Good evening, Mr. Deacon.
18:21Good evening, sir.

18:24it's Danny.

28:57Come on.
29:01Come on.
29:01Come on.
29:04That's lovely.
29:06Look out over that way.
29:08Just look out.
29:08That's it.
29:11Put your hand a bit higher up on the ladder.
29:13Hold the next round up.
29:14That's it.
29:15That's great.
29:16That's nice.
29:17Come on.
29:25Jamie.
29:26Before you go.
29:27Yes.
29:28I just wanted to have a word with you.
29:32In fact I was waiting to see if you had anything to say to me.
29:35I don't understand.
29:37Don't you?
29:39Charles must have told you there was an error on one of your measurements for your father's perspective.
29:45Yes he did.
29:46Yes he did.
29:47Well.
29:49I'm awfully sorry.
29:53Do you have any idea how it happened?
29:55No.
29:57Well I suppose it must have been my writing.
30:00Mariam probably couldn't read my notes when it came to type them up.
30:03I mean a two can look very much like an eight or vice versa.
30:07It does make rather a large financial difference.
30:11Yes of course.
30:13I really am sorry.
30:16Just a simple error then?
30:18Yes.
30:20Only it doesn't enhance the reputation of this firm.
30:23Especially as people know you and your father don't get on.
30:28What are you suggesting?
30:31I'm suggesting it doesn't happen again.
30:34Ever.
31:13What do you do, Cass?
31:19A few years later, remember,
31:34so when's a great day then? next Friday. does that mean you can't come to my party? no of
31:39course not I'll be there. Robert can I ask you something? yes of course. do you ever tell lies?
31:50not really. you need to have a good memory to be a liar and I've got enough on my mind
31:54already.
31:56I told Jamie a lie about this weekend. I said I had to go to the cottage with my parents.
32:01why did you do
32:02that? because I should have been helping you move into the new flat. only I wanted to be here with
32:07you and Adrian. I'm very glad you are. are you? yes no fun without you. you wouldn't ever lie to
32:17me would
32:17you? I don't think so. promise me you won't. all right. Robert do you want me to marry Jamie? no.
32:28why not? I don't know I can't answer that. is it because we're too young? yes something like that.
32:36I worry about it too. I'm not being too young. just not having the right feelings. I do love him
32:45but I've known him all my life. I'm safe with him.
32:48it's not dangerous. it's not romantic. just terribly comfortable and reassuring. do you know what I mean?
32:54yes. very well. and it scares me because I'm not sure that's how I ought to feel about someone I'm
32:59going to marry.
33:01or maybe it isn't. the other feelings wrong. I just don't know. when you've never been in
33:06love before it's awfully hard to tell. if it's any help the way you feel about
33:11Jamie is the way I used to feel about his mother. and is the other feeling the way
33:15you felt about Diana? yes. do you think you'll ever feel like that about anyone again?
33:34oh Mackenzie. not bad. not at all bad. and the gutter press have done you proud. seen them all then.
33:41everyone. I particularly like where you rebuilt the wall. that was splendid. bloody dark I can tell you.
33:48it's not how you felt my friend that matters. it's how you looked. thousands will see that picture
33:54and buy your shares because they believe you know what you're doing. you're close to your roots.
34:00and the rags to riches store is good also. providing it doesn't bring the tax man down on your neck.
34:05aye. well that worried me too. well we must take our chances. these are great days Mackenzie.
34:13what a long way we've come together.
34:16will you be at the price fixing on Friday? of course.
34:19round at the luncheon afterwards.
34:21how could I miss such a great occasion.
34:25but you don't look happy my friend.
34:28I'm just exhausted that's all.
34:30it's been like living in a three ring circus these last few weeks.
34:34it's a nuisance.
34:35there are many for whom it doesn't happen at all.
34:38and that would be more of a nuisance don't you think?
34:41no. you're right.
34:45so when's the wedding?
34:47wedding?
34:48your son's marrying the Isaacs girl isn't that sir?
34:50oh yes.
34:52how did you find out about that so soon?
34:55through the grapevine.
34:57he's a lucky boy.
34:59i envy him don't you?
35:00yes i do.
35:02she's like a ripe peach.
35:04delicious.
35:06pity when grant us both droits the seigneur.
35:30why don't you see this new flat of yours?
35:33no i don't think so.
35:35scared your girlfriend might catch us?
35:38we've got everything we need right here don't you think?
35:42isn't she going to let you have it now you're engaged?
35:45i'd rather wait till we're married believe it or not.
35:48god you men you're incredible.
35:51too pure for all that is she?
35:53so you put her on a pedestal and look up her skirt.
35:55come on.
35:58how about after the wedding?
35:59will i still see you?
36:00no i don't think so.
36:03what am i supposed to do then?
36:05could try being faithful to your husband.
36:08not much fun being faithful to a sailor.
36:10still you wouldn't know.
36:15i don't suppose you've ever tried it.
36:34in here.
36:39talk of the devil.
36:40weren't you expecting me?
36:41i'm reading about you as well.
36:44well i suppose it ought to be champagne these days.
36:47oh well i still prefer whiskey.
36:50that's all i've got.
36:52i've brought you some shares.
36:54oh thank you.
36:55and i was wondering if you want to come to the lunch on friday.
37:00oh well i can't on friday it's Lisa's party.
37:03ah yes of course.
37:09well here's to your flotation or whatever they call it.
37:12thank you.
37:15but i'll see you later at the party won't i?
37:19she's a lovely girl.
37:20yeah.
37:21they should be very happy.
37:23well do sit down Robbie.
37:24you look uncomfortable walking up now like that.
37:29i've been thinking about the house.
37:31well now that Jamie's moved out it's much too big for me.
37:34well do you want me to get you somewhere smaller?
37:35i can sell it and buy another place myself.
37:37i'm not helpless.
37:40no i was thinking i might move back to scotland as a matter of fact.
37:43well there's nothing to keep me here is there?
37:46well is there Robbie.
37:47i'd like to be sure.
37:49no.
37:51that's what i thought.
37:52i'm sorry did i say the wrong thing?
37:54no no.
37:55i like to know where i stand.
37:57i'm surprised you asked me to the lunch actually.
38:00why?
38:02well i thought you'd have a glamorous new person lined up for that.
38:06well i obviously haven't.
38:08you surprise me.
38:09there must be someone in your life.
38:12not really.
38:13what does that mean?
38:14i don't know Jean.
38:15i'm very confused.
38:17i can see that.
38:18who is she?
38:20what makes you so sure there is someone?
38:22oh come on Robbie.
38:23i've known you a long time.
38:25you've got the same shifty look in your eye you had when you went off with Diana.
38:30don't tell me she's coming back.
38:34no.
38:36then it must be someone new?
38:40not really.
38:42i've known her for a long time but er...
38:45she's unattainable.
38:48i shouldn't have thought there'd be anyone unattainable now you're so rich and famous.
38:56oh Robert.
38:57well how does it feel to be a millionaire?
38:59oh don't exaggerate.
39:01nonsense.
39:01my dear chap.
39:02you could be bashful about it.
39:06do you have a final share prices yet?

41:17At least you know everyone.
41:19I don't.
41:20Mostly my parents' friends.
41:22There are loads of old relations I haven't seen for years.
41:24I get the feeling someone would like to circumcise me on the spot.
41:28Are you hating it all?
41:29No.
41:31It's better when you're there though.
41:34I'll be down in line.

48:56Don't worry. I will.
48:57I'm truly sorry. We're both as surprised as you are.
49:02Surprised? I'm not surprised. I could see it coming. I only hoped I was wrong.

49:13It'll be a pleasure.
49:15This isn't the end of this, you know.
49:17Don't imagine you're going to get away with this.
