00:08being on Fox Baseball Night in
00:11America pits these story
00:13franchises closely tied.
00:15Back to their days in New York
00:17it's judging the Yankees taking
00:18on the Giants.
00:22We welcome you inside with John
00:24Smoltz .
00:24I'm Joe Davis Genz розenthal in
00:26just a moment.
00:27The Yankees bringing back pretty
00:28Pretty much the same team they
00:29finished off last year with.
00:30And they're saying we got
00:31Garrett Cole coming back before
00:33too long.
00:34It was one of the top offenses
00:35in baseball last year and they
00:37still have the top hitter on the
00:38planet in Aaron Judge connected
00:40with his first home run
00:41yesterday.
00:42Yeah.
00:42Whenever you have the best
00:43player in the American League
00:44you're always going to be in
00:45good hands.
00:46And I think the first game the
00:48first start of the season
00:49everybody's wondering what's
00:50this guy going to do.
00:51Well he struck out four times
00:53struck out two times but hit a
00:54homer.
00:55And once he hits a homer
00:56you're going to see a lot of
00:57them on the year and all he's
00:58done the last four years is
01:00dominate baseball in a way we've
01:01never seen.
01:02He's won three of the four and
01:04the MVPs and he's hit a ton of
01:06home runs so for the Yankees
01:07offensively.
01:08I don't know if they're going
01:09to be better than last year.
01:10But I know on the mound and in
01:12the bullpen they have a chance
01:13to be much better which breeds
01:15success.
01:16So far so good with their
01:17pitchers especially back to
01:18back shutouts to open this
01:19season.
01:20It's going to be a fascinating
01:21year here in San Francisco
01:23four straight years where
01:24they've sat right around 500
01:25and Buster Posey is part of
01:26their proud history saying
01:28that's not good enough.
01:29We've got to shake things up
01:30and that's what he does.
01:31He goes out and hires Tony
01:32Vitello from Tennessee and
01:34makes him the first guy ever
01:35to go straight from college to
01:37managing in the big leagues.
01:38Well the first thing you got to
01:39do is put a product product on
01:40the field.
01:41The players have to execute.
01:42Then the next thing is you
01:43don't want to be talking about
01:44your manager too often.
01:46Well that's going to be the
01:46topic for a while and
01:47understandably so.
01:48I know you mentioned the first
01:49time that this has ever
01:51happened.
01:52The first time is going to
01:52come with a lot of ups and
01:54downs.
01:54But I can tell you this this
01:55organization wants to get
01:56back to winning and he'll be a
01:58big part of it because that's
01:59all he's done is one leading
02:01up to this job.
02:02For more on Vitello down to
02:03Ken Rosenthal.
02:04Thanks Joe.
02:05Tony Vitello faces any number
02:07of adjustments managing
02:09highly paid professionals
02:10instead of collegians dealing
02:12with a major league bullpen
02:13adjusting to the length of a
02:15major league season which is
02:17almost a hundred games longer
02:18than a collegiate campaign.
02:20That's it.
02:21There have been any number of
02:23non traditional hires in
02:24major league baseball in the
02:25last five to ten years and
02:27those who know Vitello best
02:28say he is a leader.
02:30He is energetic.
02:31He is charismatic and they are
02:33convinced he's going to
02:34succeed.
02:38All right Kenny and he is
02:40excited about the guy he has
02:41pitched in today with how it's
02:43gone these first couple days
02:44he said you know what the best
02:45thing about Malley's been so far
02:47is the calmness that he always
02:48seems to pitch with brings a
02:50sense of comfort and a guy who
02:51when he's been healthy the last
02:53few years as you see with what
02:54he did last year in Texas has
02:55been dominant.
02:56He had a 218 ERA that was top
02:58five in baseball when he was
03:00pitching around that shoulder
03:01injury and they're hoping on
03:02this one year contract they
03:03might have a steal.
03:04Yeah absolutely.
03:05If he could stay healthy
03:06pitching in this ballpark
03:07this is a pitcher's ballpark
03:09now he's going he's not
03:10going up against a pitcher's
03:11friendly offense but he mixes
03:13it up he gets the ball where
03:14he wants to for the most part and
03:16he uses that fastball up in the
03:18zone.
03:18So what a place to pitch.
03:21If you can stay healthy you
03:22can put up some numbers and a
03:24tough lineup that he'll face
03:25off with here in his general
03:26state view the top run scoring
03:28team in baseball last year and
03:29it's all the same set of faces
03:30that they finished off last
03:32year.
03:32Grisham leads off and then the
03:33MPP and judge Bellinger's
03:36back so has Ben Rice after his
03:37breakout season stands off to a
03:39hot star.
03:40Jazz Chisholm at second base.
03:42Jose Caballero at short.
03:43McMahon's at third and Austin
03:45Wells does the catching.
03:47Seven to nothing Yankees on
03:48Wednesday three to nothing
03:50yesterday.
03:52And off we go in this series
03:54finale as Tyler Malley makes
03:56his Giants debut his first
03:58pitch to Trent Grisham is
04:01outside ball one.
04:03Grisham had a triple knocked
04:04in two on opening day as he
04:06tries to validate what he did
04:09last year well beyond anything
04:11he had ever done offensively
04:12given his first real chance in
04:14New York dollars career high
04:16home run total.
04:16Yeah that was pretty shocking
04:17if you ask most people
04:18thinking about where he was
04:20going to fit in.
04:21Not only did he fit in but he
04:23hit thirty four big flies he
04:25does not chase much which is
04:27part of what the Yankees need
04:28to do better fouls this ball
04:31often it's wanting to Tyler
04:35Malley thirty one years old at a
04:36Newport Beach California most
04:39of his career spent with the
04:40Cincinnati Reds but the last
04:42few years only twenty four
04:44starts going from Minnesota to
04:45Texas Tommy John surgery missed
04:47almost two full years was
04:49cruising last year before
04:50his shoulders started barking.
04:52He said he feels great and
04:57there is precedent for a guy
04:59who's had success to then come
05:01here to San Francisco on a
05:02short term contract and he
05:05to take off.
05:06You look at Kevin Gosman really
05:07made a career out of his time
05:08here and an old Reds teammate of
05:10Tyler Malley who we talked to
05:12about the process and Anthony B.
05:13Scalfani did the same a few
05:15years back.
05:16Splitter just misses and the count
05:18goes forward.
05:19For those that are wondering how
05:22the ABS system is going to work
05:24look for that to be later in the
05:25game and that challenge system.
05:27So I'm sorry.
05:31I think.
05:33I think.
05:34I think.
05:35It's a lead back stepping onto the
05:37track and he's got room.
05:40That is one of the reasons it's
05:42such a good ballpark to pitch in.
05:44You really can only get the ball
05:46down the lines depending on the
05:47wind factor which isn't a normal
05:50win day.
05:50You're going to have to hit line
05:52drives and you're going to have
05:53to hit gaps in this ballpark.
05:54Aaron Judge comes up speaking of
05:56hitting line drives.
05:57That's what he did for his first
05:58home run of the year pounded one
06:01down the left field line after a
06:02challenge after a successful
06:04challenge.
06:05You've seen so many times through
06:06the years low strikes caught on
06:08him and said I'm going to
06:10challenge that one.
06:11He got it overturned and soon
06:12after broke the tie with a home
06:14run.
06:17What does he have in store next
06:19because it seems like every
06:20year he finds a way to level up.
06:22Yeah he really has.
06:23Now that he's shown he can stay
06:24relatively healthy.
06:25You see the combination of what
06:28he's able to do on a full
06:29season the numbers and of
06:31course those are the MVPs.
06:36The ball one strike on Judge
06:38the home run that he hit
06:39yesterday.
06:40He said geez I was wondering
06:41when some good was going to
06:43happen because he had the four
06:44strikeouts an opening day and
06:46it started yesterday 0 for 3.
06:49On the ground the third and
06:51Matt Chapman always sure handed
06:53across the guy too.
07:02Two up and two down for Tyler
07:04Maley and here comes Cody
07:05Bellinger made an excellent
07:07first impression with the
07:08Yankees last year with twenty
07:09nine home runs most that he had
07:11since his MVP season in 2019
07:14and what seemed like it had to
07:16happen eventually did was drawn
07:18out a bit but signed the new
07:19five year contract drives the
07:22first one he sees towards right
07:23center field Lee not going to get
07:25back there neither will Bader extra
07:27bases for Bellinger has his mind on
07:30three.
07:33And Bellinger's got a two out
07:35triple.
07:41That is the biggest part of the
07:42ballpark and that's where
07:43triples alley is the ball seems
07:45to float in the air here but the
07:47wind and if you're a center
07:49fielder slash right fielder you
07:51got to cover a lot of that
07:52territory and you can see right
07:55there once he gets past Bader it
07:57wasn't a relatively easy triple but
07:59for most people that's where
08:01triples go to Bellinger's at
08:05third the inning kept alive for
08:07Ben Rice a year ago not many
08:14people outside of New York had
08:15heard of but he got his chance
08:17when Stan was hurt and had a
08:18fantastic year.
08:19Yeah he really did take a lot of
08:21pride of now playing first base
08:23and a few times he'll play
08:25behind the plate as a catcher.
08:31Down on two.
08:32Let's see with two strikes here a
08:34lot of the strikeouts for this
08:37young man come up up above the
08:39strike zone.
08:58The hitter sees it late.
08:59The hitter sees it late.
09:00The freedom that he has to
09:04throw at the pitch comes as
09:06the hitter sees it late.
09:12Damas takes his time and
09:14chucks it over.
09:15In and over.
09:17Giants come to bat when you come
09:18back.
09:39to the knock.
09:54If you're going to the trouble
09:55You don't see the power of
09:55If you're going to the knock.
09:58You're going to throw out
09:59the knock.
10:02You're going to the knock.
10:03You're going to the knock.
10:04You're going to get his
10:04turn.
10:04The knock.
10:32Продолжение следует...
10:35Продолжение следует...
11:29Продолжение следует...
12:00Продолжение следует...
12:02The first fastball guy, which he is, he does throw the two-seamer, that leverage and that angle is way
12:07better.
12:07Lead is second.
12:08Jazz Chisholm for the first half.
12:11And what that does is if you throw a two-seam fastball that has lateral movement, you're better off being
12:16off the first base side because the angles that you create with that pitch are advantageous over there.
12:21It's just basic science.
12:23But any dominant right-handed pitcher who has a good breaking ball, slider, and has the angles that can take
12:28care of right-handed hitters, I always felt the third base side of the rubber was the best place to
12:32be.
12:32Matt Chapman comes up here, first right-handed hitter that he gets to put this to test against.
12:37Yeah.
12:38Drops a sinker down and in.
12:39His sweeper, which moves a bunch, got hit harder than any other sweeper slider in the majors last year.
12:45So that's the spot that he's really hoping to change.
12:47Yeah, because the problem is when you're on the other side of the mound, you have to throw the ball
12:51at a different angle to get it to break the way you want to.
12:56Think about being at a right.
12:58Think about right now facing a right-handed hitter.
13:00If he was on the first base side of the rubber, he would have to throw his breaking ball into
13:03the right-hander to throw it for a strike and then start it off the plate.
13:09And the hitter can see that.
13:10So, some pitchers move back and forth, which you don't like to do because sometimes that could be a tell
13:17on what pitch you're throwing.
13:18But I just like an athletic right-handed pitcher from the third base side of the rubber.
13:23Warren's 26 years of age from Brandon, Mississippi.
13:26He got his chance last year when Garrett Cole went down and led all rookies, made 33 starts.
13:31Fires a 1-2 to Chapman.
13:33And a soft bouncing ball.
13:35Not going to be an easy play.
13:36Rice has it.
13:37Feeds Warren.
13:37He covers nicely.
13:39The no-man's land there.
13:41But Rice over to grab it.
13:42Two up and two down.
13:44Well, the first week of a season is, you know, you get a chance to practice this play a lot
13:50in spring training.
13:51The first week of the season, the narratives are magnified.
13:54This is the play that you try at half speed in spring training.
13:59It's a communication play.
14:01In other words, you better run your route and get to the ball and the angle is a pitcher.
14:05But I just love the first week.
14:08Every year, the same thing happens.
14:10People jump off the bandwagon.
14:12They jump on the bandwagon based on the first two games.
14:14And you could not get a worse two-game start for San Francisco than what they've had.
14:19Quite literally.
14:20144 years of San Francisco Giants baseball.
14:23Back to their time in New York.
14:24They never have been shut out the first two games.
14:27And what does he have to be feeling?
14:29Tony Vitello already.
14:30All the doubters.
14:31Can you make the jump from college straight to the big leagues?
14:33And then all you have is these two games to look at.
14:38And it's easy for us to sit here and say, hey, long season going to be fine.
14:41But you've got to imagine has not been sleeping real well so far.
14:46No, especially after having, you know, again, look, the spring training success is so different than this stadium.
14:52They're in Arizona, and they had great success offensively.
14:55But that doesn't translate necessarily to here because you get the ball to carry farther.
14:59You get some mixed results that could be good over there that won't be good here.
15:04Luis Arise, the three-time batting champ, first season with San Francisco, smokes one up the middle and has a
15:12base hit.
15:17What I love about this young man, he's such an outlier in our game.
15:21They're going to focus on his exit velocity not being very well, very high.
15:25Matter of fact, bat speed is probably one of the lowest.
15:28But you know what he does?
15:30This.
15:30Two strikes doesn't bother him.
15:32He gets hits.
15:33He leads the league in batting average, even though everyone wants to dump that down and say it doesn't matter.
15:39And coming over here, he gets a chance to play his position now at second base.
15:43Yeah, he played first base the last couple years in San Diego, wanted the chance to play second against.
15:47Part of why he took a shorter deal to come here.
15:50And Rafael Devers looks at a strike.
15:52Giants didn't do a ton to the roster in the offseason, but you've got to remember the big move happened
15:57early.
15:58It happened midway through last year and shocked all of baseball.
16:01When Buster Posey pulled off a trade for one of the top hitters in the game, Endeavors.
16:06Files it back and it's 0 and 2.
16:08Yeah, and he did not really have a Devers-like year when he got here.
16:11So adjustments, shock of the trade.
16:13I think he's going to have a much better year, a more complete season.
16:17And, of course, all the talk about first base, DH, third base, all the narratives that hopefully be put to
16:24bed and concentrate on hitting again.
16:28Oh, two to Devers is taken inside, and it's one and two.
16:35See, I'll tell you what, if that was later in the game, fifth, sixth inning, you would have seen a
16:39tap to the hat.
16:40And then on second or somewhere, a leverage situation would change by getting the call changed.
16:48And most teams are saying, leave it to the catchers for the defense.
16:51Pitchers, pitchers get very emotional.
16:54Yeah.
16:55Don't let a pitcher do it.
17:00Yankees are the most aggressive, challenging team in spring training.
17:03Aaron Boone said he's kind of made it his pet project to go ahead.
17:05Let's test the whole system out through spring, and then he would have conversations individually after each challenge.
17:12Back-to-back, two out-hits for the Giants.
17:15Arise and Devers setting the table here.
17:18You know, people at home might say, what's a three's not a lot.
17:21And it's not.
17:22But think about that situation right there.
17:24It can change in a heartbeat if a call either gets you the three strikes or not three strikes,
17:30or it changes the frame of the event.
17:32And now, we'll never know, because Devers gets a base hit with two strikes.
17:37Keeps in and going for Elliott Ramos.
17:41Where the Giants loan hit yesterday.
17:48Shut out on three hits on opening day.
17:50Shut out on just that one hit yesterday.
17:54And now Ramos for the rise of second and Devers at first.
17:59Take strike one from Warren.
18:01One thing early on, Warren is pounding the strike zone early, at least with runners in scoring position.
18:06San Francisco was not too bad in runners in scoring position last year as a team,
18:11and they're going to have to be awfully good this year because they probably won't have a ton of power.
18:17Ramos, somebody relative to the rest of the lineup that gives them some thumb.
18:21Back-to-back 20 home run seasons.
18:23That's one-time top prospect, really, he's been everything.
18:26He was the top prospect, and then he was the failed prospect, but got another chance because of a bunch
18:32of injuries and turned himself into an all-star.
18:36Swings and misses behind one and two.
18:39Already two strike hits in this first inning, which is unlike Warren, 161 last year.
18:47And you know he's thinking about it.
18:48He's gotten two strikes the last three hitters and didn't get him, so he's going to have to put this
18:52guy away.
18:55And one of the things Will has talked about wanting to be better at here in his second full year
18:59is not letting things snowball.
19:01When you get a little paper cut, a little paper cut with two outs like he has here.
19:05To see, for the most part, was excellent, but then there were too many blow-up games.
19:10He had five games where he gave up five runs, eight to the Blue Jays, seven to the Dodgers, six
19:15to the Red Sox.
19:16And he falls asleep right here.
19:18Arise takes third on him.
19:26Well, no harm, no foul if he gets the hitter out.
19:29You know, the last thing you want to do is make a mistake and throw this ball away when you
19:32get caught by surprise.
19:33That's a timing issue.
19:37And stepping off, making sure he doesn't make a late throw.
19:41Arise sprinting off the third and saying, hey, that should be a block.
19:45And now he's got 30,000 people joining him.
19:51One, two, coming to Ramos.
20:03The Giants trying to break through.
20:06Went to their first run of the year, looking for their first run under Tony Vitello.
20:10The crowd's going to tell you everything he needs to know about that.
20:17Lays off the breaking pitch and the county bims up.
20:21Well, if nothing else, it made Mr. Warren throw a lot of pitches in this first inning
20:26when it was going to be a relatively quick inning with the third hitter and two strikes.
20:31Rye sprints his way, a third of the way towards home, and then McMahon snuck in behind him, and he
20:35had to dive back.
20:36Ramos stays alive.
20:38Little cat and mouse game going on down there at third.
20:42Arise in a lot of ways.
20:43Ramos is a fun player to watch.
20:45Trying to bring some energy, not just a rise, but with Vitello, Harrison Bader, who they brought in.
20:51Things were flat here, sitting around 500 for far too long.
21:02Ramos tried to cash in.
21:06The other thing, you know, being excited and getting off to a good start, every hitter, every team wants to.
21:11And he felt like his swings against great pitching, by the way, got really, really big.
21:16And right here, so far in this first inning, they haven't been a lot of big swings, which tells you
21:21why they can get hits and foul off pitches with two strikes.
21:2421st pitch of the inning for Warren, the eighth to Ramos.
21:27Another 2-2.
21:28Another foul ball.
21:31Yeah, I mean, you need to be hard-pressed to find a more difficult first two games free on opening
21:37day.
21:37Schlittler yesterday, who looked like he's just going to build off of what he did in that monster rookie season.
21:44First time in Yankees history they've had back-to-back shutouts to start the year.
21:50Warren tries again, and the count goes full.
21:53And it goes to 10 pitches on Elliott Ramos.
22:12Here it comes, Ramos swings and misses at the high-fast squad, and Warren gets out of it unscathed.
22:18Giants leaning on him, but still trying to break through.
22:21It'll be Giancarlo Stanton off to a wonderful start to lead things off when you come back.
22:54We'll be right back.

25:21He missed the first half with
25:23the elbow issues.
25:24Here the best numbers that he's
25:26had as a Yankee.
25:27Yeah.
25:27I mean this guy.
25:29When you look at his overall
25:31numbers it's hard to imagine.
25:33And he won't get well past 500
25:35homers in his career.
25:364-54 yesterday.
25:39Past Jeff Bagwell, Vlad Guerrero,
25:41Carlyar Lemski last year.
25:43All Hall of Famers.
25:45Pretty good Hall of Fame case
25:46himself for those home run
25:47totals.
25:51the game in 2010 Giancarlo
25:52стандартный 17 year in the
25:54major leagues and more than
25:55half of that with the Yankees
25:59the payoff to it for Malle is
26:02poked through the right side
26:03on the leadoff hit stand the
26:05buck 500 in the opening weekend
26:11if you want to see what a
26:13hitters view or basically a
26:14catcher's views going to be you
26:16got two angles here you got a
26:18fastball up it's a swing and
26:21It's a perfect view of what it
26:23looks like coming in.
26:24What it looks like hitters just
26:26see it so well that high
26:27fastball.
26:29So hard to hit especially one
26:31like Warren's that stays up
26:33there leadoff man aboard jazz
26:36Chisholm coming up coming off
26:38his 3030 season which he says
26:40should have been 4040.
26:41He's got a pretty good case for
26:42that because he did 33 even
26:44though he missed a month and
26:46then didn't run it all over the
26:47last month and a half after he
26:48was hurt.
26:49He says he's going for Phil
26:5150 50 this year everybody's got
26:55to have a goal good to aim high
27:00he said I got everything you
27:02need to do that and really he
27:04does have that kind of talent
27:05where air boots compare them to
27:08Ken Griffey Junior when it comes
27:09to just the freakishness of his
27:11baseball ability he's got
27:13thunder in the bat he's definitely
27:15got lightning personality I think
27:17he's trying to figure out at what
27:18speed he plays the game last
27:20year he said I need to play at 70
27:21percent meaning it play too fast
27:24and too involved Maly bond two
27:29strikes reaches out rolls it along
27:32first and foul some guys go to
27:35New York and wither some guys go
27:38to New York and thrive and it
27:39seems like it is the right fit
27:40for that personality you
27:41mentioned it yeah I think you
27:43gotta have a certain mindset and
27:46not be deterred or listen to
27:50the too many things because
27:51you'll be it'll toss you back and
27:53forth pretty violently stand at

28:012 again and misses high county
28:02that's up on Chisholm who will be
28:04a free agent at the end of this
28:06year so if he does go 50 50 be
28:07pretty darn good timing for that
28:16now he brings him a 2 to his look at
28:18it as it just misses and a
28:21challenge coming here from Bailey
28:25who was the best challenging
28:28catcher during spring training
28:30at the end of this season ABS powered
28:32by T-Mobile's network it's a good
28:36one strike three look at it from
28:49the home plate umpire sinker that
28:56all he's got to do is touch that
28:58line that box the little kiss
29:02March Madness going on our guy
29:04Raf Jose Caballero Bailey's
29:08thinking do I do it again back to
29:10back challenges Caballero will be
29:13the answer to the trivia question
29:15who had the first challenge in
29:17Major League Baseball history is
29:18Jose Caballero and he was wrong
29:23to get a chance to start it short
29:25to open the year with Anthony
29:26Volpe still working his way back
29:27from the shoulder surgery they
29:29got Caballero at the deadline last
29:31year speedster exciting player
29:34who's never really had a full
29:36opportunities at parts of three
29:38years in the majors but usually
29:40a bench player role player chance
29:42to show what he's got here while
29:44Volpe works his way back
29:500 49 stolen bases last year between
29:53Tampa Bay and the Yankees to lead
29:54the majors second straight year
29:58that he's done that out of 2-1
30:02for Malley watches straight to
30:21and he's done that well part of the
30:24narrative this year is going to
30:25be all eyes are going to be and
30:27we talked about going to be on
30:28the manager what kind of
30:29strategies what kind of do the
30:31players accept the philosophies
30:33that not only organizationally
30:35but what the manager which is
30:37totally different because as
30:38soon as you hear college to
30:39pros without anything in
30:42between you think well that's
30:43going to carry over into the pros
30:45but not so fast when you're a
30:48veteran player you have to buy in
30:50and believe what you're hearing
30:52from leadership and that's when
30:54teams thrive and it starts in
30:56spring training they bought in
30:58the energy was really high and
31:01they were doing a lot of good
31:02things now over time being able
31:06to adjust to one sixty two and
31:07what players are used to be very
31:10interesting on his part everybody
31:12comes out of spring training
31:13and feeling good take me though
31:16truthfully into a veteran's
31:17shoes in a major league clubhouse
31:19when a guy who's never been
31:20there walks into Legion well
31:22they're going to question some
31:23decisions that either backfire
31:24it's basically we're all that
31:27suck you know armchair
31:28quarterback we all sit on the
31:29bench thinking we know what we
31:31would do it's going to be about
31:33the routines that are expected
31:35and established we saw early on
31:36today they did some
31:38fundamental drills now I don't
31:39know how much longer that can
31:40go during the year where guys
31:41might go okay we don't do that
31:43it's a long season those are the
31:45kind of little things but
31:47winning cures all we talked about
31:48it he knows it you know it is a
31:53great starting place is we had
31:55our first chance to sit down with
31:56him today he has it yeah he has
31:58that presence that is going to
32:00get immediate attention
32:01immediate at least respect in terms
32:06of okay you have my attention
32:07and let's see what you got just
32:09by walking into the presence
32:11that you can see how he won the
32:12interview room right and now it's
32:15going to come down to the pieces
32:16that he has or the pieces he has
32:18it's not like they're so stocked
32:21in the minor leagues that if
32:22things go awry they can just
32:23bring up guys and resources
32:28Caballero takes right three
32:30long down the back to the case
32:32for Malley more on Vitello down
32:34to Kenny Joe one other thing
32:36we're pointing out about Vitello
32:37and the college game it has never
32:39been closer to the major league
32:41level than it is right now you
32:42see guys like Nick Kurtz and Paul
32:44Skeens dominate in college and
32:46then dominate in Major League
32:47Baseball quickly and I thought it
32:49was interesting today hearing
32:50Vitello talk about how the
32:52analytics he was getting at
32:53Tennessee are not much different
32:55than the analytics he's getting
32:56right now with the San Francisco
32:57Giants it's only the delivery
32:59methods that are slightly
33:01different than they were in
33:02Tennessee he said that SEC
33:04football money gets dispersed
33:05throughout the athletic
33:06department one of the ways they
33:07took advantage of that was
33:09through a robust research and
33:10development department analytics
33:12department McMahon with two out
33:15one ball one strike I'll tell you
33:16one big difference so you could
33:17play with a lot of energy in
33:19college you can
33:20do a lot of things differently
33:21because you don't have quite as
33:22many games certainly that will
33:25play out here in the big leagues
33:27when you don't score runs it
33:29looks lethargic it doesn't mean
33:30you are rolled it a second and
33:34after the leadoff base it from
33:35state 1 2 3 from Malley.
33:53it based on the Adelaide Field of the
33:53of the high school
33:55whatever it is all you think
33:55I get it.
33:56Thank you so much.
33:57I got it.
34:03I got it.
34:08I went.
34:09I got it.
34:10You took it.

39:33First one of the day is shoot
39:35by Warren.
39:42Up comes Casey Schmidt.
39:45Schmitz got the start at first
39:46base these first few games
39:48because Rafael Devers still
39:49nursing a tight hamstring which
39:51he's been dealing with for the
39:53last month or so.
39:55So once he's ready to go you
39:56have Devers in at first.
40:02Little high on Schmidt.
40:06It's called high but.
40:09Just.
40:20Schmidt in his fourth year with
40:22the Giants in and out of the
40:24lineup played a really impressive
40:26important role last year and
40:27Matt Chapman was hurt stretch
40:29where he was their best hitter
40:30with a couple of those stretches
40:32in his young career.
40:35Former two way guy at San Diego
40:37State.
40:39Ultimately a hitter but as a
40:40freshman.
40:41Sub one ERA is the closer.
40:44Still the school record there.
40:48I have a feeling that the
40:49greatest player ever.
40:51Todd he's going to open up a
40:53few more doors in that
40:54category.
40:55Over time.
40:57Michael Lorenzen is going to
40:58give it a shot again this year
40:59here in Colorado and play a little
41:00bit outfield.
41:05Why not.
41:06They could use every kind of
41:07help they can get.
41:08That was rough going last year.
41:12There's some teams that need to
41:14kind of get going.
41:16Out of that basement.
41:18Paul D.
41:19Potesta taking over the
41:21Rockies.
41:24One two way outside count evens
41:27two and two.
41:27See that pitch right there when
41:29he learns to hold back.
41:31And really stay closed on the
41:33third base side of the rubber
41:34because he's moved.
41:35See how this a noncompetitive
41:37pitch starts way away.
41:39And I think that's the thing.
41:41That when he goes to the next
41:43level of consistency and wipe
41:44out strikeouts that pitch will
41:46be better.
41:52Warren trying to make his case
41:53to hang on with everything they
41:55have come in.
41:56In terms of starters.
41:58Cole and Rodan Schmidt back
42:01half of the season.
42:02You have Luis Heal starting the
42:03season in triple A is a
42:05testament to how deep these
42:07Yankees are.
42:09So Warren yeah 33 starts as a
42:11rookie last year but.
42:12Probably still a sense of I got
42:14to show I.
42:15I deserve a spot in this
42:17rotation with how many options
42:18they're going to have when
42:19healthy.
42:21Station has a chance to.
42:23Be one of the very best in
42:24baseball.
42:26Popped up behind first.
42:28I don't know Bryce has found
42:29it yet.
42:30He does now makes a basket
42:32catch.
42:33Very bright afternoon here in
42:35San Francisco.
42:37Still no score nine one and two
42:38coming up for the Yankees.
42:40That means Aaron Judge on the
42:41other side of this break.
43:07night.
43:10It's going back for the Yankees
43:26Bears.
43:27That means Aaron Judge.
43:28You're there.
43:30I'm so sorry.
43:31I'm so sorry.
43:31I'm so sorry to ask that

45:35As the day goes on, that shadow is going to creep towards that mound.
45:39And that's the separation where hitters will tell you, eh, light to dark, not fun.
45:46He's already tough enough to hit here.
45:49That's when that lighting is fine.
45:52Grisham flied out his first time.
45:56I know that the chance to pitch in this ballpark played in the Malley's decision to come here.
46:02This one-year contract is a pretty heavy fly ball pitcher.
46:09And look, first batter of the game, Grisham hit it pretty darn hard.
46:13He put a fly ball that died out in right field.
46:15I think he's probably saying, ah, that's what I figured it might be like here.
46:20Don't mind that.
46:25He's got the splitter work, and that's what he's going to need against the left-handed hitters in the lineup
46:30for the Yankees.
46:40It was right there, missed the weight ball to five of them in the Yankees' lineup today.
46:46Again, Malley has been harder on those lefties than he has, right?
46:48He's historically...
46:56Here's a 2-1 pitch.
46:58Swag and a miss on a perfectly-placed fastball to that outside corner.
47:07Get another view.
47:09See that ball just fade away.
47:11Change of speed.
47:12Change of color, too.
47:13Yeah.
47:14This appears halfway home.
47:25Malley's 2-2 pitch.
47:27Got him, and Grisham immediately says, I think that was high.
47:31So he's challenging.
47:37As always, powered by T-Mobile's network.
47:39Yeah, he was right by Plenty.
47:48Lives to see another pitch.
47:503-2.
48:02Malley turns and throws.
48:03Grisham turns on the ball and cameras it down the line.
48:07Foul.
48:08It'd be pretty close to a splash.
48:10You've got a foul ball.
48:10I'm going to hug it.
48:15I'm going to hug it.
48:23Ultimately, here is the walk.
48:25So, well-used challenge by Trent Grisham there.
48:27To turn a strikeout into a walk.
48:29And a man aboard for Aaron Judge.
48:31Grounded out his first time.
48:33He's now 1 for 10 so far this season.
48:35And the lone hit, a home run, but six strikeouts in there.
48:37Yeah, and that orange one you see is actually, yeah, that's, that was a swing and a miss.
48:42It almost hit him.
48:43Maybe did hit him.
48:44And I think that's, Aaron Judge has learned to close windows and doors of opportunities from the other pitchers.
48:52But it's all about the timing for him and the ability to stay off the low pitch.
48:56Because you can imagine that his height, that's where pitchers need to go to get outs, down below, and chase.
49:04Manly on 1-0.
49:06The outside edge for a strike, 1-1.
49:09You've got to be careful when you adjust your helmet now.
49:12This is like an auction.
49:13Raise your hand.
49:13Hey, you made a bid.
49:15No, I wasn't challenging.
49:16I was just adjusting my helmet.
49:17I was sitting the other day.
49:18It's a little bit like the punt returner trying to shade his eyes.
49:20And they get him for signal in the fair catch.
49:23Everything low.
49:24Takes it.
49:24Ahead, 2-1.
49:27Aaron from about an hour and a half from here in Linden, California.
49:32Grew up one of those guys.
49:33Not necessarily out in the kayak, but as a Giants fan.
49:38Copying Rich Aurelius' swing.
49:412-2.
49:43He's played five games here in his career.
49:46He's hit four home runs in those five games.
49:48A couple times, he almost was a giant.
49:52He was a free agent in 2022.
49:56Strongly considered coming here to San Francisco.
49:59In the draft, coming out of Fresno State, Giants had the 25th pick.
50:04Yankees had the 32nd pick.
50:06Giants took Christian Arroyo at 25th.
50:08And the judge was there for the Yankees' seven picks later.
50:11Look, Giants weren't the only team to pass on him.
50:14There were concerns that he could make enough contact in the big leagues.
50:18Here's the payoff.
50:19Here's the payoff.
50:20Judge Higgs and misses.
50:21No contact here.
50:22Another strikeout in a series full of open judges' season.
50:26Well, you better enjoy him now, pitchers, because later, when he gets that timing, it's not going to be as
50:31enjoyable.
50:32He's got a big one.
50:33A big one.
50:34Splitter that really caught most of the plate.
50:36But.
50:38Dipped below the bat.
50:40Remember, two years ago, a month into the season, was hitting a block 70 or something like that, and wound
50:45up by the end of the year being the MVP.
50:48A matter of time for Judge Bellinger, who doubled his first time, grounds and foul.
50:53This will be interesting for the contract that Bellinger signed.
50:56And if he's fixed a couple things mechanically, long term, it'll work out.
51:00He had a good year, as you mentioned last year, and he's going to enjoy hitting in that home ballpark.
51:05Who would?
51:09A great fit.
51:10Left-handed hitter like him, the versatility he brings in the outfield.
51:15And the Yankees have needed that in recent years with Judge and Stanton, want to keep them healthy.
51:21Bellinger can play anywhere out there, can play first base.
51:24Former MVP.
51:30No one from Malley.
51:33Takes it low.
51:34Ball on a strike.
51:36And he's definitely evolved through the years, has any.
51:39There were times it was a huge swing, but pretty short and simple these days.
51:43Well, he needed to.
51:44Because in this day and age with basic velocity at an all-time high and spin it.
51:48It was just getting underneath and above the barrel with his style of hitting.
51:53They're going to expose him and he's made some adjustments to kind of help that.
51:57Close that up a little bit.
52:01You have a tall hitter on top of the plate.
52:04You want to be able to pound him in and get him underneath.
52:09The barrel can get out in front to connect with that ball and beat him up.
52:21But if you don't get it in there, he can pull his hands through and he can get a splash
52:26zone in this ballpark for sure.
52:28He has back in his Dodger days.
52:30Reaches out.
52:31Holds it up the middle.
52:32Pass the bag and arrives.
52:33Bellinger two for two.
52:34And the Yankees have him cornered with two out.
52:43Now, Stanton, it sure looks like when we get to see Stanton come up, Bryce will be up first.
52:48But with the Yankees and their ability to put runners on, if they cut down their strikeouts on the season,
52:57then offensively they've got a chance to duplicate what they did last year or be better.
53:02That's a team that won 94 games during the regular season.
53:06Ultimately, how did it finish?
53:07They got beat in the division series.
53:09But when you are deciding what to do with the roster moving ahead,
53:13you can't get blinded by what happened in a few days span in the post.
53:16It was amazing.
53:16This was the best team in the American League during the regular year.
53:20And it got better as the year went on.
53:22Bryce follows it off.
53:23So, Brian Cashman looks at it and says,
53:26Really, I know that it wasn't the finish we wanted,
53:29but I think we got the team that we want with a little tweak here and there.
53:33With the guys they have coming back.
53:35Offense a chance to be just as good like you're talking about.
53:39Rotation massive upside with the guys coming back from injury.
53:42Some of the pitchers they have in Triple-A.
53:46One ball one strike on Rice.
53:49And that offense, which got breakout performances from guys like Rice and Grisham,
53:54brings everybody back.
53:59One big concern for the Yankees, the bullpen, but most bullpens are talking about that this time of year.
54:06That's the area of any team that tends to change the most as the year goes on.
54:12Two and one on Rice.
54:14Two and one on Rice.
54:14Yankees with a chance here in the third.
54:17The one for the early season sweep over the Giants.
54:22Grisham in third.
54:23Bellinger at first.
54:24Rice.
54:26Fouls it off and it's two and two.
54:36It's an area where Malley excelled with the Rangers last year.
54:39It's one of the best in the league with runners in scoring position.
54:48Two on, two out, and a two-two pitch.
54:52Rice courts on the deep right field.
54:54Lee's going back.
54:55He'll watch it hit off the wall.
54:57Grisham can jog home.
54:59Billinger sprinting towards the plate.
55:01He will score standing up.
55:03Two on double from Ben Rice.
55:07A two outburst from the Yankees has New York on the board first.
55:18He saw one middle middle and he was able to pull it down that line.
55:22I said the ball will travel down the line here, but everywhere else it kind of goes to die.
55:28Two out runs are so difficult when you've got a couple hitters and two strike counts.
55:33So Ben Rice knocks in his first runs of the year.
55:38Two to nothing Yankees.
55:40Here's Stanton.
55:41Five out of nine so far this year.
55:45See what I was getting ready to say was Stanton.
55:47If you don't pitch him in and get him off that fastball away and he can slap through the hole
55:52of no second base.
55:54That's what makes him tough.
55:55If you pull the mistake in.
55:57That one.
55:59You get another one.
56:00He'll be able to do damage with that.
56:02But with two strikes he's so strong in that short stride.
56:05He just slaps it to right field.
56:08But he did his first time off.
56:11And this one one swings through a fastball one and two.
56:15And he's whole Erik a few foot.
56:16Good man.
56:17Good man.
