09:25And Friedel is aboard first knock of the day for Cincinnati
09:29Let's take a look at the Red Sox defense presented by Carr Shield
09:32Across the infield it's gonna be Caleb Durbin at third base
09:34With Story and Meyer up the middle
09:36Wilson Contreras at first and the outfield left to right
09:39Anthony Rafael and Abreu with Carlos Narvaez doing the catcher
09:48Marcello one of the heroes on opening day coming off the bench so effectively
09:54As McClain gets in the second baseman for the Reds and takes a ball
10:00This is a guy came out of spring training very hot he hits seven home runs
10:05But he was hitless on Thursday
10:08Against the beasts and the bullpen
10:14And then a one-nothing
10:16Slicer foul
10:19That was a curveball up to Fredo that he hit hard to right field
10:22But
10:23The only de la Cruz you got Benson as well
10:25You're gonna have three lefties against the righties
10:28We saw this his last outing in spring training this sinker sweeper cutter becomes
10:33More prevalent it more so than the foreseeing fastball. We'll see here today
10:40Bounding ball foul
10:43Sonny in his 13th major league season
10:45Made the all-star team three times
10:49He has logged almost 2,000 major league innings
10:55Had a good season with the Cardinals last year as Lou mentioned 14 and 8 428 B.R.A.
11:01Over 200 strikeouts
11:03Here's the 1-2
11:04Runner goes
11:06And that's gonna be downstairs for a ball and a stolen base for Friedel
11:11So each side doing a little running right away
11:15Here in game two
11:16Friedel had
11:1812 bags last year got caught three times
11:20That's one thing, you know when Sonny is in that two-strike count
11:24He does like to finish you off with that sweeper
11:26So you get a guess right get a good pitch to steal on
11:31There it is again
11:333-2
11:40The introductory press conference zoom
11:42That Sonny Gray had and he's talking about spinning the baseball
11:46He made a comment says I spin it better than anybody in the game
11:49It was confidence
11:51Because over the course of his career he really has
11:53He's always been the top five with pretty much everything curveball sweeper every rate you could think of
12:03Not a big guy 510 but a buck 90
12:08Now 36 years old native of tennessee calls his own pitch got the pitch calm right there in the glove
12:19That's a good pitch
12:20Free lat second
12:21Freeland second
12:22Play on a tag
12:23Not in time
12:26With marcello slanting over
12:33This series the only meeting
12:36Of the year between cincinnati and boss and of course they met last year at fenway
12:40which marked the 50th anniversary
12:43of the historic 1975 World Series.
12:493-2.
12:50And then pop foul back into the stands.
12:54They won't sell out today here at Great American,
12:57but they'll have a really nice crowd.
13:0275-76, the big red machine.
13:05What a tradition here.
13:06An opening day.
13:08A lot of people, that little four-hour parade
13:10leading into the stadium.
13:13Eighth pitch of this at bat.
13:15And he walks him.
13:17So McLean earns that.
13:23And the Reds with trouble brewing right now.
13:26Runners at first and second for Ellie Dela Cruz.
13:31They just tried to get a little,
13:32looked like a little slider or cutter off the plate.
13:34You know, last year, 93rd percentile in walk rate.
13:37It's something that Sonny Gray
13:38really doesn't do much of throughout his career.
13:42He had 38 strikeouts to go with the,
13:45walks rather, to go with the 200 strikeouts.
13:48Gets hit.
13:49Strike one on Dela Cruz, the switch hitter.
13:52All-star shortstop.
13:54Did not hurt the Red Sox in the opener anyways.
13:57One for four, had a single.
13:59Friddle.
14:02Friddle and McLean get their leads.
14:09That was close.
14:10Carlos thinking about it.
14:13He brought that hand up and thought about
14:16hitting, asking that to be challenged.
14:23And a 1-1.
14:25And he would not offer.
14:31Ellie a lot more dangerous on this side of the plate.
14:35And 848 OPS hitting left-handed
14:38compared to only 618 hitting right-handed.
14:41And he's hit Sonny Gray really well.
14:455 for 11.
14:52So Gray, out of the gate.
14:55He's scuffling.
14:56Goes to 3-1 with Stewart on deck.
15:00I always wonder, a guy who likes to spin it a lot.
15:02A little cold weather.
15:03We mentioned it's 49 degrees.
15:06Get a feel for that spin.
15:083-1, a strike.
15:13Which can't use the tacky stuff anymore.
15:23Needs to make a pitch right here on the 3-2 with 2-1.
15:28And a high chop on the infield.
15:31Contreras will go back to the pitcher.
15:32And Gray gets there in time.
15:34With the runners moving up to 2nd and 3rd.
15:37And one down.
15:41With Stewart.
15:45You know, Wilson last year kind of playing first base for the first time
15:48after being behind the plate most of his career.
15:51That's still one of the most challenging balls for a first baseman.
15:54How far to my right do I have to go?
15:56You saw Meyer kind of sitting right behind him.
15:58You let your second baseman field that ball.
16:00It's an easy flip.
16:01But now you've got a lead.
16:03Sonny Gray getting over makes it a little more difficult.
16:05They executed it.
16:06But knowing where your second baseman is, how hard the ball is hit,
16:11which one should I go for, which one should I not.
16:14It'll bring the infield in.
16:19That's a good one.
16:20Stewart, the cleanup man, had a very good opener.
16:22Three for four.
16:23He had a couple of doubles.
16:31The rookie first baseman who got drilled on the forearm
16:34by that line drive off the bat of Roman Anthony in the opener.
16:39Infield leaning in.
16:40And that is right through there for a strike.
16:42That's 94
16:44Little hump on that one from Gray
16:46Kind of lives around 92-93, but it's in there
16:55Everybody in tight on the 0-1
16:57And a ground ball base hit
16:59Into right field
17:00Friedel is in to score
17:02McClain will be held at third
17:04And Cincinnati strikes first here today
17:071-0
17:11South Stewart, good-looking young hitter
17:14They're very, very high on him
17:15He puts the Reds in front
17:17Oh, he stays on this cutter
17:19Just doesn't try to do too much
17:21We saw this the other day
17:22He hit a ball over there for a double
17:25So he left it up a little after getting ahead 0-1
17:27But you're right, this kid can swing it
17:29He looked good opening day
17:31Gets the Reds their first run of the season
17:35And Reds on the corners for a Eugenio Suarez
17:38The DH
17:42With one down
17:46And one of Thursday's turning points
17:49Was certainly Garrett Crochet's bases loaded
17:51Showdown with Suarez in the sixth inning
17:54And he struck him out
17:59And now Gray trying to limit the damage
18:02One ball, one strike
18:06You know, first inning of the year
18:08Trying to get this ground ball
18:09It's that Stewart one that kind of stands out
18:11That's okay, strikeout guy
18:13This is when you really need it
18:14Second and third just left that one little cutter up
18:232-1
18:30Suarez drove in 118 runs
18:33Between Arizona and Seattle last year
18:36With 49 home runs
18:392-1
18:41And filed away
18:43Caught a piece of his foot
18:452-2
18:52A guy that strikes out a ton
18:542-2
18:54Right here is execution
18:57Spin that baseball
18:58Get strikeout number one of the year
19:07McClain a runner at third
19:09Stewart on at first
19:111-0 the Reds
19:21And a 2-2 pitch
19:25A bid for the outside corner and he's running full
19:30So 24 pitches for Sonny Gray
19:35He has had three full counts already
19:43And a little number back to the hill
19:45Runner trying to score
19:46Got him in a run
19:47Lunge for him
19:48And he's safe
19:49And it's dropped anyway
19:52And another run is in
19:55So Sonny Gray unable to get an out on that play
19:59And it is 2-0 Cincinnati
20:04Came right back to him
20:06They had this
20:06They had the out
20:08You look at McClain
20:09Get down that line
20:10He does the right thing
20:11He freezes him
20:11But you want to give that ball up
20:14So he tries to hold on to it
20:15When he goes to try to tag him
20:17He actually drops the baseball
20:19Doesn't even get McClain
20:20You give that ball up
20:21Once you freeze him
20:22Give it to Narvaez
20:23Kind of just run it into an out
20:26Get him in a run down
20:28Just try and do a little bit too much
20:36So that'll put him on the corners
20:39Or on at first and second
20:42He's got to dig in
20:43With Spencer Steer about to dig in
20:49Yeah he had McClain going on contact
20:55Give him credit
20:56He kind of stopped and then
20:57Took off towards home
20:59And just that little movement
21:00Kind of rattled Sonny a little bit
21:03Fielder's choice RBI for Suarez
21:08And in for a strike on Steer
21:17It's a rocky start for Gray
21:20Two hits a stolen base
21:23A walk
21:25And he does not get it out on a play at home plate
21:39A walk
21:40Stewart the runner is second and Suarez on at first
21:44And it is
21:46Two and one
21:4915 strikes here in 28 pitches
21:53Normally Sonny is going to be aggressive in the zone

26:48He's swungled and scored two and two.
26:54Yeah, a couple of really nice swings from him off the bench.
26:57Something he really hasn't done.
26:58Did a handful of times last year, but it's kind of impressive to be able to do it opening day.
27:05Nerves.
27:07Pokes out one foul.
27:08Two balls, two strikes.
27:20Now, Ravai is on deck.
27:22Two-two and into center field, but Friedel is there to back up.
27:25It's over his head.
27:27That's going to go all the way up against the fence into second base Meyer.
27:33Friedel thought he had it covered, and it just took off over his head.
27:381-0-9 off the bat.
27:41I mean, he's a couple of really nice swings.
27:43He gets this fastball, this sinker out over, and smokes it.
27:47Friedel doesn't realize how hard this ball's hit.
27:49It just kind of shows you the power that Marcelo Meyer does have when he barrels this thing.
27:55Of course, we've got a little celebration.
27:57Don't want to go three.
27:59That would be a flag.
28:011-0-9.1 off the bat.
28:05And Ravai is looking to pick him up.
28:07To the right side.
28:09McLean on to first.
28:12Two down.
28:13Meyer into third.
28:16And for more on the celebration, here's Jemai.
28:18Well, interesting perspective on the celebration, Dave.
28:21I asked Marcelo Meyer about it earlier this afternoon in the clubhouse,
28:24and he said that the veterans gave him a heads up after his opening day debut on second base
28:29and celebrating that way that the questions would come.
28:31So, he said, they didn't want me to tell you what it meant.
28:34But he said, you'd be surprised that it doesn't mean what people think.
28:38But he wasn't able to divulge exactly what it meant.
28:41But he said it was a great way to fire up the boys
28:43and something that they certainly appreciate that they want to keep in-house.
28:47Okay.
28:48I think we all had our own thoughts.
28:50Two down.
28:51Runner at third.
28:53Seton Raffaella.
28:56Who was two for four on opening day.
28:58Had a clutch run scoring single in the seventh.
29:00These are very secretive.
29:01You know, these teams, they got their own little celebrations.
29:04They don't want you here.
29:04They don't want to know what it is.
29:09Right through it.
29:09One and two.
29:17Batting stats presented by your local Honda dealers.
29:22And a one-two pitch to Seton.
29:24Chopping that one softly.
29:26Picked off by Stewart, the underhander, and in time to retire the side.
29:30Red Sox with a couple of three labored in a big way in the first inning through 35 pitches.
29:36And gave up a couple of runs.
29:39Time now for discipline that delivers.
29:41Presented by Vanguard, Sonny Gray.
29:43And that was out of character for him.
29:45You look at National League strikeout to walk ratio last year.
29:48These are the leaders.
29:51Topping that list.
29:54And he walked the second man he faced.
29:56As you mentioned, 180 innings, only 38 walks.
30:00So 1.9 walks per nine innings.
30:05Usually fills up that zone.
30:08Jose Trevino, the catcher, will file it away.
30:12He's the number eight hitter.
30:14Then Hayes and then Friedel.
30:25And Sonny Gray's been a high-quality starter for a long time.
30:32Fires a 1-2.
30:34And he'll miss with that.
30:36And they're going to challenge it.
30:41Catcher's challenging the ball call.
30:48So Narbaez challenging this.
30:52Pitches the ball.
30:54Dawson has one more chance.
30:56Look at the pass.
30:59One-tenth of an inch.
31:01Yeah, and that's kind of like a catcher trying to, you know, tough first inning.
31:05Yep.
31:06Able to get that first out of the inning here and get him in the groove a little bit.
31:09ABS powered by T-Mobile.
31:11Got one left.
31:14And in there for strike three.
31:17It comes back to put away Trevino.
31:21And a good start to his second inning.
31:24Yeah, a little sinker, comebacker.
31:25Going to just get that outside corner.
31:27I'm surprised he didn't challenge it.
31:28But again, strategy when to use it, right?
31:31Nobody on in the second, leading off the second inning.
31:34I don't think that's the time you want to challenge it, even though that one was clearly away.
31:40Key, Brian Hayes, the number nine hitter.
31:44Each team starts the game with two challenges.
31:50If a call's overturned, it'll be retained.
31:54If not, you lose that.
31:56Red Sox down to one.
32:00Sharply hit it short.
32:01Story, good job staying down.
32:03Not a good throw ball.
32:07And Hayes will reach first base when he should be out.
32:12Red Sox make their second error of this opening series.
32:17Well, this ball, you can see the hop.
32:19It's kind of uncomfortable the way he catches it right there, just in between hop.
32:22And he just doesn't really move his feet.
32:25Get his feet then around, he kind of just throws his ball.
32:28See, really short to the right.
32:30A little cutter.
32:32Just didn't get his feet underneath him.
32:38Top of the order, Friedel, who has singled and stolen the base.
32:41He scored a run.
32:47You know, they say, too, with the ABS, talking to the minor leaguers,
32:51you kind of always want to try to have one throughout the game.
32:54Just to, it kind of keeps the umpire somewhat honest.
32:59You only got one left now.
33:04One hammered foul.
33:08And it's not really intentional.
33:09It's just kind of human nature.
33:11The Red Sox lose another one here in the next couple innings.
33:14You got CB Buckner back there.
33:16He can
33:19call whatever he wants.
33:27One down and the 0-2.
33:31That will drift outside.
33:40Sonny spent three years with Cincinnati from 2019 through 21.
33:4619 is best year.
33:48He had a 2-80-70 ERA.
33:51Passed the mound.
33:52Story will go to first base and cut him down.
33:56Hayes in the second.
33:58And two away.
34:02With Matt McClain on the way up.
34:04Story's going to come get this ball.
34:05Look at the patience.
34:06The last minute he sort of slows up a little bit
34:08to make sure he doesn't get that in-between hop.
34:13Right there, he just sort of waits.
34:14Let's it get a little bit deeper to get a better hop.
34:16Gets rid of it quick.
34:23McClain taking a walk in the first inning,
34:25and he would score a run.
34:38Decent power with 15 home runs last year.
34:41He's the second baseman.
34:44Tears into that one, but a foul ball.
34:47Of course, said it before opening day.
34:49We talk all the time about infield defense,
34:52and he's talking about how he's a defensive kind of player
34:55when he played in the big leagues,
34:56and he does not like looking up,
34:59seeing lead in the league in errors.
35:01It's one thing to kind of talk about it
35:03and put the personnel out there,
35:04but you're still going to go out there and make that play.
35:07I mentioned a couple errors here in the first couple.
35:111-1.
35:13He'll foul.
35:14That went down the right field line and off into the stands.
35:19There was no error charged on Sonny Gray's play to home plate.
35:24That was a fielder's choice, but that was poorly handled.
35:29116 errors for the Red Sox last year,
35:31the most in the big leagues
35:35in front of Colorado and the Chicago White Sox.
35:38I thought Trevor had a good year last year.
35:39Now, he had those six errors in September in a week.
35:42They really kind of skewed everything,
35:44but you hit him the ball, and you're usually out.
35:491-2.
35:53I agree.
35:53I thought he was very solid.
35:55Yeah.
35:56Throughout the season,
35:57made the plays that he should have made.
36:00That last run of errors was unusual.
36:04A lot of those were throwing errors.
36:09Two down and a 2-2.
36:11That one shot toward the alley.
36:13Long run for Sedan.
36:14Rafaelo won't get there.
36:15That'll skip off against the fence
36:17and bring in another run.
36:19McClain's in the second,
36:20and they get 3-0 Cincinnati.
36:24So the error comes back
36:25to haunt the Red Sox right away.
36:31Mentioned McClain yesterday 0-3,
36:33but hit 5-0-9 in camp,
36:36and this time he just gets a spinner,
36:37kind of left it out in the middle of the plate.
36:41It's his first hit of the year.
36:43It's two-out double.
36:45Mentioned under and run there to Sonny Gray.
36:52Dela Cruz 0-4-1.
36:54He put it in play, ground it out first time off,
36:56man, looks at a strike.
37:02Good idea to keep him off the bases.
37:04He stole 67 bases to lead the majors two years ago.
37:08That dropped to 37 last year.
37:15He's in the hole 0-2.
37:30McClain at second.
37:32And a two-strike pitch to Dela Cruz.
37:37He will strike out looking,
37:39and that retires the side.
37:42Red Sox give up another run,
37:44however, now 3-0 Cincinnati.
38:03Roman Anthony has to take a ball one.
38:05We'll look at a strike.
38:06He is 0-4-1 today,
38:07having grounded out to second.
38:093-0 Cincinnati to the third inning we go.
38:13Top of the order.
38:14Red Sox trying to dig in on Brady Singer.
38:17And Roman takes ball two.
38:20I see a fastball 91.
38:23He does kind of sling it.
38:25Got a lead extension 7 feet,
38:27so it kind of gets on you.
38:29And it looks it.
38:33He's going to challenge.
38:35A couple early challenges.
38:38Batteries challenging.
38:41DBS power play T-Mobile.
38:49Kids got it.
38:50This is the ball.
38:512.7 inches.
38:54They also say that a bad miss is two inches.
38:56For example, the pitch that ended at WBC,
38:59that was four inches below the zone.
39:03Good challenge by Roman.
39:06Again.
39:07Oh, my God.
39:08There's another one.
39:09Wow.
39:10He's challenging again.
39:12Batteries challenging the pitch.
39:14It's kind of dangerous, too, in this situation.
39:16You only have one left for the game.
39:19That's it.
39:22Such as a strike.
39:23Boston has no more challenge.
39:25So the Sox are done.
39:27ABS powered by T-Mobile.
39:28Well, none for the rest of the game.
39:29Yeah, that's tough, too, with
39:32CB back there.
39:33If it goes extra innings, they get another.
39:36But
39:39as far as nine innings, that's it.
39:43On the count, three and two.
39:48That's in there, strike three.
39:54It changes things when you run out of them.
39:56Yeah, it's not really ideal to be out of challenges here now in the third.
40:01And this little fastball way looked like it did get the corner.
40:03But
40:05now,
40:07again, you're going old school, which is fine, right?
40:10But still, the egregious pitch that's not called or is called,
40:14you kind of lose any attempt to challenge it.
40:17Although, as you mentioned, it did look like a good pitch.
40:22Trevor Story 0-4-1, he struck out.
40:32Duran on deck.
40:38Swing and a shot out to left field, racing back, Steer turning around.
40:42That ball's gone!
40:44Home run, Trevor Story, the first of the year for the Red Sox.
40:49Number one for Mr. Story.
40:51And the Sox are on the board.
40:53A solo shot to make it 3-1.
40:58As well as Trevor swung it down in spring training,
41:02he did not hit a home run.
41:04He had six doubles, three triples.
41:06This one here, he absolutely smokes.
41:09Gets it out there to left center field.
41:11Get number one of the year, that'll feel good.
41:15402 feet, that Red Sox home run,
41:17presented by New England area Audi dealers.
41:28Oh, he gets a sinker, kind of come,
41:30try to nibble that outside corner,
41:32just comes right over the middle of the plate.
41:33See the reaction, he knew he got it right away.
41:35Sure did.
41:3625 last year.
41:38Duran committed.
41:43Going out.
41:46And a line drive, too.
41:48It's coming in hot.
41:5625 of them last year.
41:59Four RBI short of 100.
42:04One and two on Duran, who was struck by a pitch in the first inning,
42:08then stole second.
42:14So the Red Sox hang that first home run up.
42:18And down he goes, swing it.
42:21Singer fanning Duran, number two.
42:36And Contreras to dig in, took ball four in the first.
42:41And his second walk of the year.
42:5020 home runs, his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals.
42:58Bases are empty with two away.
43:14He won't chase on ball three.
43:18Singer down the stretch last year for Cincinnati.
43:22And they won the National League wild card.
43:24He went seven and four with a 281 ERA his last 12 starts.
43:27He was really their best guy.
43:29As he delivers ball for Joaquin Contreras for the second time.
43:34When you're close.
43:35Kind of spinning everything off the plate against him.
43:42And we'll bring up Willier Abreu, lined hard to the third baseman
43:46with a couple of baserunners in the first inning today.
43:51Reds three, Red Sox one.
44:00Willier winning his second consecutive gold glove last year.
44:12High fly ball in the right center field.
44:15Friedel moving over along with Benson.
44:17And Friedel will make the play.
44:18Side retired, but the Red Sox hit their first dinger of the year.
44:22Trevor Story.
44:23Bottom of the third.
44:25Three to one.
44:25The Reds in front.
44:26Sal Stewart to lead things off against Sonny Gray.
44:30And he'll hit a high fly to center deep.
44:33Sadon backing up.
44:34Backing up.
44:34And that ball gets out.
44:36Home run.
44:38To make it four to one Cincinnati.
44:40Swing it at the very first pitch of the inning.
44:43Against Sonny Gray, who's had a rough first start for the Red Sox.
44:51I was just about to say, you could use a little quick inning here.
44:55That pitch count up where it is.
44:57Start attacking the zone more.
44:58This one here, looking like a fastball on top of the zone.
45:01Maybe even out of the zone.
45:05This kid's Stewart.
45:06He's got some pop.
45:07You watch him take BPs.
45:09He's hitting balls where not many guys are.
45:12This ball just kept carrying center field.
45:14So, there's Suarez.
45:19There's Suarez.
45:19Line toward the alley.
45:20That's going to drop down for a hit.
45:22Abreu to cut it.
45:25The first two aboard here in the third inning.
45:30Bruins hockey's on the air on Nessun Plus and streaming live on Nessun 360.
45:35Bruins taking on Minnesota at TD Garden.
45:37The puck drop coming up at 5-10.
45:41Remember, you can watch every Red Sox and Bruins game on Nessun 360 on the app.
45:52Now, send up Spencer Steers 0-4-1.
45:58You see that curveball there.
45:59He's been going to the cutters, been getting hit hard.
46:01Really not be able to find that curveball sweeper in the zone and throw many strikes with it.
46:05And that's kind of like his money right now.
46:10Giving up five hits.
46:15He's also walked him in.
46:18That's a good cutter there.
46:20The location of it.
46:22He's throwing a few middle-middle.
46:23He's gotten hurt.
46:25The sweeper's the big pitch for him.
46:27He's got one of the best sweepers in the game.
46:29It's just, he's not throwing it close enough to the zone to induce that swing and miss.
46:33Kind of non-competitive pitches.
46:38That's what I'm talking about.
46:39You know, where that ends up, if you show a little bit more of the plate out of hand,
46:44you may get that swing and miss.
46:46But when it starts down and away, it's easier for a hitter to lay off of.
46:54The shadows creeping in on the right side.
46:58Nobody out.
46:59One on.
46:59Another run in.
47:05There's another one.
47:08Two and two.
47:16And just never comfortable.
47:20From his very first batter, when Friedel singled off him,
47:24and then McLean took ball four.
47:26Stewart had a base hit.
47:29Gray had a play to make it home plate.
47:31Didn't make it.
47:32When a run scored.
47:34Got a piece of it.
47:42Red Sox came back with a home run from Trevor Story.
47:46Only to see the strong youngster Stewart.
47:51On his two hits today and two RBIs.
47:54Launch a long home run, twisting into right center.
47:58To begin this inning.
48:01Two-two.
48:02He struck him out.
48:03Spencer steered down, swinging.
48:06First out of the inning.
48:08That's a good sinker there.
48:09To that downward action.
48:12After spinning it a couple times, goes with this sinker.
48:15If you get contact on that, it's a double play ball as well.
48:18He gets the swing and miss.
48:23Right fielder Benson next.
48:26Gray struck him out in the first inning.
48:30And strike one.
48:34Connelly early to go tomorrow.
48:37Young left-hander who was so impressive at the end of last year.
48:401.40 for our first pitch here at Great American Ballpark.
48:45And the Red Sox move on to Houston for three.
48:48He really forced their hand in camp, didn't he?
48:51He came into camp wondering, is there really a competition?
48:53They want Oviator to have it.
48:55Send the kids down to AAA, get a little seasoning, work on a few things.
49:00But he was just outstanding from day one and won that job.
49:07And one, a little roller, fair ball, swing and bunt.
49:12Gray will take care of it to get him.
49:14That's on number two.
49:15Suarez down a second.
49:18Very weakly hit for an out.
49:22So two gone.
49:23So two gone.
49:24A little cutter just gets in on him.
49:27Thought maybe this hit off his foot, but no reaction.
49:31Gray makes the play.
49:32Now you got a big spot here, right?
49:33Two outs, man on second.
49:35You have to get this guy, keep it right where it is.
49:38Four to one.
49:41Way inside that line.
49:42Number eight hitter coming up.
49:46Had a bear down to get him.
49:47Trevino struck out looking in the second.
49:53Off the end of the bat.
49:54Scooped up by Contreras.
49:55He'll take care of it at first base to retire the side.
49:58Another run in, though.
49:59Four to one, Cincinnati.
50:02Back here in Cincinnati, top of the fourth, 4-1 Reds.
50:06And, guys, an 11th hour number change for the new Red Sox third baseman,
50:09Caleb Durbin, ahead of opening day.
50:11And I talked with him and asked why.
50:12Durbin said because he's always been a single-numbered digit guy.
50:16He wore five and six in the minors and even at points earlier in his career.
50:19He said that the 17 just wasn't him.
50:21And the higher numbers, he said, seemed to be for the pitcher,
50:24so he didn't want to go that route.
50:25But when the option was presented to him, that was the lowest available.
50:29Most of the others are already spoken for, as we know, and retired.
50:32But it's been a while, and a few since have dawned the Cinco.
50:35But in recent memory, you just really think of one man
50:38when it comes to the five in the Red Sox uniform.
50:40That's Nomar Garcia par.
50:41And Durbin said it doesn't provide any more extra pressure
50:43or expectations on him.
50:45He said wearing a Red Sox jersey, period, is pressure enough.
50:51Well, he makes a fair point.
50:54But number five, there is some inherent pressure, if you ask me.
50:59As Marcelo Meyer gets it, he doubled his first at bat.
51:03Yeah.
51:04Nomar wore for many, many years.
51:06I think Rocco Baldelli was the first one to wear five after Nomar.
51:10There's been a few guys.
51:11Kike had it for a few years.
51:15I think ten different guys have worn five since Nomar.
51:21Pretty good number five here in Cincinnati.
51:24Johnny Bench in there for a strike.
51:27I feel like if you wear five, you've got to just swing at the first pitch
51:31and barrel everything.
51:32That's pretty much what he did.
51:34Johnny was on the field before the game.
51:37What was the legend that he could hold eight baseballs in one hand?
51:41Something like that.
51:43Giant mitts.
51:48One down and a one-two to Marcelo.
51:54Red Sox looking for some sustained offense to get a home run from Trevor Story last inning.
52:01Marcelo already with three hits in his first couple of games.
52:05And he'll come up empty there.
52:07Cuts in, misses, strike three.
52:09And he'll come up empty there for three.
52:10Singer gets him.
52:11Two gone.
52:13So Singer attacks left.
52:15As you mentioned, he doesn't have a changeup.
52:17But he's going to go sinker, cutter, and that sweeper.
52:21That's going to be the one down to get guys to chase.
52:23Marcelo unable to lay off that one.
52:31Two gone for Carlos Narvaez, who is 0 for 1.
52:39One for three on opening day.
52:40Had a key sack bunt in the seventh.
52:44Which led to the Red Sox 1-0 lead.
52:47In a game, they would win 3-0.
52:50I think he told Jen McCaffrey after the game, they did it in his own.
52:54Reporters keep asking Cora about the bunting.
52:56Everyone's trying to find out, we bunting more this year.
52:58He didn't want to give up the strategy.
53:01Do one other.
