Fifteen-year-old Jack Palmer from Holybourne has received a chief fire officer’s commendation for saving his neighbour’s life with a defibrillator.
His parents have a defibrillator at home and his father Brent Palmer trained him how to use it. On December 13 last year Jack’s neighbour Elaine Drake asked the Year 11 Eggar’s School pupil to get it because her husband Tony Drake had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Tony’s daughter Hatty dialled 999 and began CPR, then Jack used the defibrillator and took over CPR from Hatty until Alton firefighters arrived, before an ambulance took Tony to hospital.
Jack was presented with his award from Hampshire’s chief fire officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton by assistant chief fire officer Ben Allen at Alton fire station on March 24.

00:00Remarkable composure, responsibility and courage.
00:05And faced with an emergency, he decided to help.
00:09In a world where it's all too easy to stand back and reach for a phone,
00:15seeing a young person step forward and act rather than record
00:18is genuinely a breath of fresh air.
00:22And it's something we should all promote and recognise.
00:26And from all of us at Alton Fire Station, we really hope this inspires
00:30other young people to learn the skill and step up in that moment of need.
00:37Jack, your actions really made a difference that day
00:39and tonight is clearly proof of that.
00:43So it's my honour to recognise Jack with this award
00:48and I'd like to hand over to our Assistant Chief, Ben, to present it.

01:04And we are here to give this award to Jack and fully deserving of that.
01:08But what I heard and what Josh has said
01:10and all the things we've shared tonight
01:12is about how everyone's pulled together as a community
01:14to help someone when they needed it.
01:16And the courage that was shown by everybody in that situation
01:19is really admirable.
01:21So thank you all for everything that we've done
01:23in this place and where we've found ourselves.
01:26But most importantly, as Josh has said,
01:28tonight we're here for Jack.
