Fifteen-year-old Jack Palmer from Holybourne has received a chief fire officer’s commendation for saving his neighbour’s life with a defibrillator.
His parents have a defibrillator at home and his father Brent Palmer trained him how to use it. On December 13 last year Jack’s neighbour Elaine Drake asked the Year 11 Eggar’s School pupil to get it because her husband Tony Drake had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Tony’s daughter Hatty dialled 999 and began CPR, then Jack used the defibrillator and took over CPR from Hatty until Alton firefighters arrived, before an ambulance took Tony to hospital.
Jack was presented with his award from Hampshire’s chief fire officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton by assistant chief fire officer Ben Allen at Alton fire station on March 24.

00:00On the 13th of December, Saturday morning, I was at home with my daughter, who called me to see us,
00:06my wife, watching television, Saturday morning kitchen, and my life just went in a total darkness.
00:15I was told afterwards that my daughter phoned 999 to call emergency services. My wife and her dragged me on
00:26the door, and they started a secret out of being paid for the emergency services.
00:33Then my wife dashed to our neighbours next door, Jack's mum and dad. Fortunately, Jack was just leaving the house.
00:40I knew they had a defibrillator. So Jack washed down with a defibrillator, took over the secret out of my
00:49daughter, who by this time was absolutely exhausted.
00:54Shortly after that, I think Jack was probably quite pleased the fire and rescue services had died and took off.
01:04All I can say is that I owe Jack more thanks than I can ever tell him. In fact, the
01:1214th of December saved my life.
01:16If I am truly, truly grateful.
01:25And Jack, did you say any words about how you can do that?
01:36Or, you could do a bit of both, I would say.
01:41I'm very glad that you've got to be in here.
01:45You said that I was very positive.
01:47You've got all of them about what the marks were.
01:50I am so glad you're ready to do that.
01:54I am so glad to say that you've been around for all sorts of choices.
