00:00We won!
00:01I'm gonna be freakin' president of the United States.
00:03You believe that?
00:04Here I am again, not dead, back in season two.
00:07This is fun.
00:08It's a Fogelman show, so no one ever is really gone,
00:11because there's flashbacks.
00:15If you're gonna do stuff like that,
00:17you have to execute at such a high level,
00:19or the show will fall on its face.
00:22What really makes this show shine is using flashbacks
00:25as a way to inform whatever mystery we're trying to solve
00:28in the present day.
00:30By going back and finding out someone's origin story,
00:34you learn so much about who they are.
00:38It allows for us to speed up our storytelling
00:41in a way that really just keeps it smacking you in the face.
00:46Stories come after the character in this show.
00:48We create the character,
00:49we understand their weakness and their strength
00:51and their want.
00:53And then the stories kind of present themselves from there.
00:58You're constantly giving the audience these big moments.
01:01Come here.
01:02Those moments,
01:03they tantalize our audience in a very easy way.
01:07Do you think the things happen for a reason,
01:09or are they just random?
01:11And we really are trying to show,
01:13while people may do bad things,
01:15there's good reasons maybe why they're doing those things.
01:19Jane, to me,
01:20is the most terrifying character in the show
01:21because she kind of knows more than everybody else.
01:24We always knew we wanted her to be this highly trained killer.
01:28And the question for us was, what does motivate Jane?
01:31She's very work-oriented.
01:34I think she goes above and beyond
01:35in ways that I would not look up to.
01:39She has a desperate mommy complex.
01:43You're the worst goddamn thing that ever happened to me.
01:46Sinatra and Jane both are coming from deeply wounded places.
01:52You're the only person left down here who knows my secrets.
01:55But I'm gonna be honest, Jane, you terrify me.
01:58When we come into the play of different timelines,
02:01people will have more of an understanding
02:04of why Sinatra has made some of the choices she has.
02:07Your life's work is complete.
02:08It's never just about the bunker.
02:10If you accept that Sinatra's mission
02:12wasn't just to save 25,000 people underground,
02:14but was to do something bigger,
02:18it starts making some of the evil decisions
02:20she's made retroactively make a lot more sense.
02:23After the success of the first season,
02:25I got a call going,
02:26we're bringing you back.
02:28And then I said,
02:29okay, I guess it's gonna be flashbacks.
02:31And he said, yeah, but we'll make it great.
02:32Your boy is gonna be the first child born down here.
02:35How wild is that?
02:36I'm excited about all the arcs.
02:38I think you see characters go in different ways
02:40than you would have expected.
02:43And then with it comes all these other characters
02:45learning the story of, you know,
02:47what might have befallen Terry in the outside world,
02:50as well as all the characters left back down below.
02:55I have a plan for all of us.
03:00Thanks, y'all.
