00:00hula hoop the moment where she gets in the choke hold checking your vital sign oh where am i
00:10at what point did you know that this was where your character's journey of the season was headed
00:15it was actually one of the audition scenes i was talking to this patient and he was saying that he
00:20didn't want to be seen by others and um i go and check his thyroid and he puts me in
00:26in this choke
00:27hold so i had to like for my audition like show them like choke face it's so funny um so
00:34i was
00:34always actually at the beginning when i told people i was part of the pit i was like like my
00:38family i was like oh yeah i'm gonna be the nurse that gets like choked uh which now i know
00:44is like
00:44a major spoiler um but i thought i didn't know how long like when it would happen how long i'd
00:49be on
00:49the show what was it like shooting that with katherine and the other actors it's a very intense
00:54scene and actually like lasted we did it over like two days cliffhanger of episode 11 and then it
01:01becomes the um first part of 12 and so i actually had like a sore neck we've done it like
01:09practice it
01:09did it so many times but we had um someone there for for fight choreography um and she was great
01:18and
01:18travis has done a lot he's a uh the guy who plays the golfer and he's done um he's done
01:25a lot of
01:25physically intense roles and i remember being kind of nervous about it and then travis was just like
01:31um so studious and so sure of himself and and and communicative with me and checking in constantly
01:37that um i started feeling really comfortable and we played it full out she kept telling me i needed to
01:44like fight more like i need to really like show that i was struggling and so at a certain point
01:51and travis is strong so a certain point like he was like he was doing that safety hold that's not
01:58actually a choke and i was fighting with all of my might like i was genuinely trying to get out
02:05of the
02:05the hold so it was like this workout because he was trying to keep the hold while i was trying
02:10to push
02:10out adrenaline inducing and it's an automatic uh gives you automatic empathy for all of these
02:18nurses that suffer physical abuse and verbal abuse just what they have to do to take care of their
02:25patients unfortunately throughout the season you're kind of in the orbit of dana like you're
02:30she's kind of your mama bear character throughout what was it like to work so close with katherine
02:34over the course of the season i mean she's she's incredible um connecting with her in scenes
02:40there's this electricity that she always brings um you lock in real quick uh i came in there not
02:48completely sure of myself because i'm amongst so many legends and she was like you've done this since
02:56you were a little like i've done theater since i was a kid and and she's like and you went
03:01to a
03:01school for four years like what are you doing just like this this questioning of my own like
03:07self-judgment like crazy mind she was she's like dude you're you got this it's just cameras now and
03:13and um yeah and she would like take me by the shoulders all the time and be like kid you
03:19got
03:19it so it's been so great there's a really tense scene in episode 12 where your character is just
03:24watching dana and robbie hash it out over what the next steps are and robbie is trying to get dana
03:30off
03:30the case you need to pass this patient off and report him fine emma you're done with this bastard
03:35i'll handle this is my emergency department and i'm telling you to pass it off these are my nurses
03:40and i just want cases they work and if you think for one minute putting anyone else for my staff
03:43at
03:43risk with that asshole you better give your head a shake what was it like watching those two actors
03:47those two characters go toe to toe like that i mean that it was an intense scene and uh in
03:52the script it
03:52says like emma watches like is caught in the middle of mommy and daddy's fight it's something like that
03:58that's written in the in the script and that's what it felt like it's like these two people
04:03and that that scene when i um get caught in that chokehold i watched it and i was like emma
04:10run like
04:11do something like i'm used to this in scary movies to be like why aren't you backing up but like
04:17in it
04:18i understood it perfectly well emma is trying to one prove that she's meant to be here and two she's
04:25not
04:25the type like unfortunately even though she was in danger the thing that was running across her mind
04:33is how do i help this person how do i not hurt this person you know and it's just a
04:38tricky situation so i
04:39think uh in that moment watching dana and robbie fight it's it's this inner conflict of like oh how do
04:48i help this like i i unfortunately like victim blaming yourself you're like oh if i had been
04:54better this would have never happened they wouldn't be fighting i put dana in trouble which is not
05:01healthy thinking but this is definitely what emma's going through and also just this like slight fear
05:06again i mean i say in the beginning of the season it's more of a fear of what am i
05:09going to become
05:10but also like this fear of like i mean obviously of what happened and also that she was so prepared
05:16that she had this thing hidden away that i saw her in the most violent of forms and um she
05:24did it
05:24to protect me which i'm like emma's forever in her debt but it's a you see a side of a
05:32person that
05:32you've you've never really seen in anybody else i was really struck too where you know dana wants
05:37her to leave early and she says i'm not a quitter how about we call it a day my shift
05:42isn't over this
05:43was a shift and a half for anyone today believe me if it's all right with you i'd rather stay
05:50i'm not a quitter okay but someone good for you what did that tell you about her attitude and why
05:55she's there and and what her chances are surviving the pit maybe for another season i think it speaks
06:01a lot to youper culture to the upper midwest i mean she's a michigander not afraid of a little
06:08scuffle you know i'm saying so i think you see that part of her and i and i'm really happy
06:12that
06:13even in this season and on her first day you can see that this sweet girl who smiles has
06:20gone through a lot and i think it it allows us to question what's happening with our like
06:24young women and not underestimate them i had a conversation with emma a lot where i'm just like
06:29girl you come through a day go home like come back tomorrow but i think there's just this
06:36need like emma needs to prove herself and show to people that she she's she just has this craving
06:42of making the world a better place so that she can feel better you know like if someone tells her
06:48like she's a good nurse oh i've made a difference and she will do anything that she can to make
06:54that
06:55difference and i think that's what's gonna make it so she can stay in that hospital and i think that's
06:59what helps dana continue to work in this broken american health care system and i think it's
07:06it's what's unfortunately if there's no way i think she needs like another intervention she needs to like
07:13let it go otherwise she'll become jaded like dana maybe i'm mistaken about this but i believe i saw that
07:20earlier this um year you were on the the strike lines with the nurses in new york yes it is
07:26true
07:27when we talked would you mind talking about why you did that and how working on the pit has made
07:31you just rethink what nurses go through oh my god how could i not after spending so much time
07:38uh seeing the the trenches of of what being a nurse can be and seeing how nurses are are deeply
07:47under
07:47undervalued and um and seeing how caring and compassionate and giving you have to be
07:54and they're just asking for these minor things so that they can protect themselves and their
07:57patients i'm like why why do we need to strike in the first place was my question um so yeah
08:05i was so
08:06happy i'm someone who's always going to be outside out in the streets when there's a problem i will be
08:11i will be arm in arm with everybody and um i was so grateful for that experience because um uh
08:17i made this
08:19little community with these um uh pick you nurses out there so i just really got to see how strong
08:25the community between nurses um is and that would also be interesting in in season three having some
08:32uh part of that conversation that came from the strikes
08:35you
08:35you
