00:19I competed in eight Ironman triathlons.
00:23And I'm here to give them the recognition they deserve.
00:26I've assembled a crack team of artists, painters and sculptors
00:30to immortalize these unsung heroes with a unique series of portraits.

01:37Across the UK, a staggering number of exotic animals are being kept in grim conditions.
01:44And when I say exotic, I mean things like capybaras, alpacas, mountain lions.
01:50And when I say grim, I'm talking sheds, garages, even spare rooms.
02:01Lindsay's rescued hundreds of wild animals that would otherwise have been put down.
02:05She cares for them at her self-funded rescue centre and has devoted her life to raising awareness about the
02:12exotic pet trade.

02:25I'm really interested to hear about all the work you do.
02:29Because I think, actually, we have quite a lot in common.
02:32In our love of animals.
02:34Where did it begin, this sort of, the idea of this sanctuary that you have?
02:39I went to buy a piece of furniture in Cardiff.
02:42And I went into a garage.
02:44And the bloke sending me the piece of furniture kicked something on the floor.
02:47And it was a little raccoon.
02:49And they had bought it on a whim for their kid, Christmas.
02:52So I went home with a raccoon and a piece of furniture.
02:55Where have they got the raccoon from?
02:56They got it online.
02:57There is a huge legal trade in wild animals.
03:01Mm.
03:02And that thousands of wild animals every year are given a life sentence as a captive domestic pet.
03:07How many animals do you have at the moment, then?
03:09We've got 198.
03:10Good Lord.
03:12And we've got 42 different species.
03:14From meerkat, monkeys, mountain lions.
03:17We do not fulfil our animals' needs because they're not wild.
03:20Is it possible for them to be released back into the wild?
03:25If it was an option bill, I would pay myself to fly them back to where they came from.
03:30The issue for an animal that's been born in captivity is they haven't been parent trained.
03:35If they're part of a social group like a meerkat, to put a single one out there would be life
03:41sentence.
03:42Yeah.
03:42You try and find a rescue centre for a traumatised mountain lion.
03:47Mm.
03:47If they don't exist, so euthanasia is very high on the list for mild animals.
03:52Yeah.
03:53It must be relentless, though.
03:55Yeah.
03:55And does that put a bit of strain on you?
03:57It's 24-7, sometimes right through the night.
04:01Anyone that looks after animals like this, the stories are very similar.
04:04So, you know, you start off with something and then it just snowballs, you know.
04:08Yeah.
04:08And you find out that an animal is going to be, in our case, was going to be euthanised.
04:13And we said, well, we'll take it.
04:14And the next minute we're getting calls from, you know, from customs.
04:17We've got an enclosure somewhere that's closing down.
04:20And it's a lot of work.
04:22It's consumed my whole life.
04:24So I don't have a life outside the sanctuary.
04:27I mean, it's a big cost to take on, isn't it?
04:30Yeah, it does cost a lot.
04:31I don't mind that.
04:32I want the animals to have a good life.
04:35But what I do want to put more of my energy in is turning that tap off.
04:38Yeah.
04:39Full stop.
04:40We'd better talk about a portrait.

04:42Because that's the sort of point of the show, really.

05:17Amazing woman, runs a wildlife rescue centre, devoted her whole life to looking after animals,
05:24and is sort of campaigning to try and get the law changed so that wild animals can't be bought online.
05:30So, I was thinking, who might be someone who would be appropriate?
05:35Someone, an animal lover?
05:37Perhaps someone...

08:10This one came out of her mother's pouch in the field.

08:13And couldn't get back in,
08:14and then none of the females would accept her in after so long.
08:18Very, very cold.
08:20So she was hand-reared.

08:27I don't have favourites,
08:28but when you spend every night, every two hours feeding it.
08:31And that must really take its toll.

08:37It's being accountable for the lives they lead.
08:40And I do find that a genuine, huge burden.
08:45We got a call from a lady.
08:47She had a bath, a small bathtub in her back garden
08:49that was actually green and full of sludge
08:52that she had some capybaras in.
08:54And George was one of them.
08:55Yeah.
08:56So we've got six in total.
08:57And for whatever reason, they've evicted George.

09:02And a lot of places that had groups of capybara
09:04will have one that's been evicted.
09:06Like Love Island.
09:08Ricky wants his painting to be more than just a likeness.
09:11He wants to uncover the real Lindsay.
09:14So chatting to her husband is a good place to start.

09:23My major contribution in this, and it is quite a significant one,
09:28is that I do absolutely nothing.

09:33Suppose your partner turns up and she says to you,
09:38right, we've got a pile of mountain lions.

09:41We're going to build an enclosure for these mountain lions.

09:46We're going to pay for the vet's bills.
09:49And we're going to look after them for the rest of their lives.
09:54Yeah.
09:54Doing nothing is actually quite significant.

10:03And also, there must be an element of you that goes,

10:26We started with one raccoon and then ending up with this
10:30huge conservation place with hundreds of animals.
10:33But it's just what she wants.
10:34She can have that.
10:35And that's either because he's a brilliant man
10:38or she's unstoppable.
10:41Who are these two?
10:42This is little Leo.

10:57So, I really want to get to the bottom of who she is
11:00because this is a portrait of her at the end of the day.

11:02And I know she wants to include a lot of the message in there.

11:08If she wants something, she will go out and get it.
11:10And she's always about improving the animals' lives.
11:13And she's not extravagant.
11:14She's very simple.
11:15She is always herself.

11:18I really like the way her hair is just all over the place.

11:22She's always outside.
11:23Got her straw in there.
11:24Straw, okay.
11:25I think here at the farm will mean the most to her.

11:27Because this is her life, like.
11:37Between Lindsay telling me about the logistics of the place,
11:41emotions are creeping out, and I find that incredibly, like,
11:44it's kind of heartbreaking in a way, because every so often
11:46she kind of slips and tells a story about an animal, how she found it,
11:50where it was, how it was being looked after, and how cruel it was.
11:53When I see that side of her personality, I see why she does it.
11:56She can't bear to think of an animal in distress.
11:59And I really feel like I'm getting to know her better.
12:10My head's swimming full of ideas.
12:12I've got plenty of photographs, plenty of sketches.
12:15I'm gonna procrastinate on purpose and just let it settle in for a few days.
12:27I'm just here to catch up with Ricky.
12:28I know that he's visited Lindsay's sanctuary,
12:31which sounds absolutely amazing.
12:33So I want to find out what he's learned so far.

12:42She's an incredible woman.
12:44She's kind of the embodiment of the whole place.
12:47And so that's what I've got to do.

12:50I mean, over 200 animals.
12:52With that, obviously, there's 200 stories.
12:55Yeah.
12:55And some of them are pretty shocking.

12:58So there's, like, a lot of sadness involved in that.
13:01But I want to really celebrate Lindsay and the good that she's doing.

13:04So, I have a sitting tomorrow.
13:08Now, I definitely don't want her to be posing.

13:12This represents, to me...
13:13I mean, obviously, it's a little bit too wing-swept.

13:16I am gonna try and capture some of this energy.

13:23Like, you know, she's not too bothered about being too manicured, too...

14:10We're about to feed the gibbons and the spider monkeys.

14:17We have got aubergine, pepper, leek, fennel...
14:22Very healthy stuff.

14:24It's healthier than what I eat, I can tell you that much.
14:28We've got three single marmosettes, so one in here and one in here.
14:31We're about to integrate.

14:33They do live in groups, don't they?
14:35I mean, in the wild.
14:36And this one was taken off its mum when it was only a baby,
14:39and it's been in hamster cages, pink dresses and nappies,
14:42fed on the completely wrong diet.
14:44How did you come by this one?
14:47This woman got it from her husband's friend,
14:49who had bought it from a dealer off TikTok.
14:52That is how a lot of these animals are passed around and sold.
14:56She told me the story about how distressed it was,
14:59crying all the time.
15:00Dressed up and paraded around, it's pretty grim.
15:05See, I'm very drawn to parrots.
15:07Yeah.
15:07I mean, you could have them in the background
15:08with a mountain lion underneath.
15:09How many animals do you want to put in this?
15:12Well, what you've got to think is,
15:13this has got to be the voice of the animals.
15:15Yeah, but you've got to be in it as well.

15:17Somewhere there in the background.
15:20Lindsay's got some very strong opinions
15:22of what she wants the painting to be about.
15:24She really wants me to get as many animals as possible,
15:27which I'm finding it difficult to correlate with the fact
15:30that this is a portrait of her.
15:33There is a danger of it being too on the nose.
15:36If you're writing poetry, you dance around the subject.
15:44Oh.

16:22He wants to convey something of Lindsay's passion and dynamism.

16:28It's a weird thing, because sometimes you can capture someone
16:31in just a few strokes.

16:33And then sometimes it takes a long time.
16:35And what I want to get to is the point that I can draw Lindsay
16:39in a hurricane.

16:48When I start the painting, I want to make a mess,
16:51and then I want to tidy up the mess and tidy it into Lindsay.
16:55You don't want to be too inhibited.

16:57You don't want to try and be too detailed, too early.

17:00And I suppose with portraits, right, it's about getting to know them.
17:03It's almost like a way of looking at her for a long period of time

17:54But I've started, which has given me, you know, there's no going back now.

18:09I really like the bits where it's freer and easier.
18:13I don't like the bits that I have to concentrate on,
18:16because I can see the concentration in the painting.

18:22After the sitting in Y,
18:25Ricky was presented with a bit of a dilemma.
18:28You know, it's trying to find a balance between a likeness
18:31and representing the personality of the sitter.
18:36And that, I think, is the challenge that Ricky's facing you.

19:54I've got to admit, I feel a bit anxious about this project.
19:58I think the problem is, in some cases, you know,
20:01you have somebody who has a particular interest,
20:03or they have their job or their profession,
20:06and you want to sort of suggest that in a portrait,
20:10or suggest some other element of their lives,
20:13because that is sort of the essence of portraiture, in a way.
20:16But in this case, this is Lindsay's life.
20:20Everything about her is about the animals.
20:23So I'm intrigued to see how he kind of figures out a way out of this.
20:30I've finished petting Lindsay,
20:33so I'm going to do images of animals a bit like that,
20:36inspired by the antlers and by Kate Beans.
20:39It's the only way I can think of her
20:41that won't take away from Lindsay herself,
20:45but I want her to be the focus.
20:48So let's hope it doesn't ruin it,
20:50because I'm really happy with it at the moment.

23:02Getting the combination of who she is and what she's about,
23:07I think that's a challenge.

23:17and I got to know you a little bit, and I love you dearly,
23:20and I hope you can see that that is something I wanted to portray

24:17When you're all about the animals,
24:19to have it on you must be a really hard thought
24:23to even know where to start to make it about someone
24:25who doesn't want it to be about them.

24:28I think it's amazing.
24:32I think Ricky has put Lindsay at the centre of it all,
24:38which is where she really is.
24:40But if she was going to do something like this,
24:44she'd have put the animals at the centre.
24:47But she is at the centre of the whole thing,
24:50and nothing else would work.
24:52I think it just really does show you're the life of everything around you
24:59and what you've achieved.
25:00Often in this enterprise there is not a great deal of joy
25:07or not enough joy,
25:09but when that joy and satisfaction comes,
25:11which you can see in there,
25:14then you sort of realise that the enterprise is worthwhile.
25:20He's produced something so gorgeous that will last forever.
25:26He's so beautifully captured.
25:28I just wish the world would step out of the way of other species.
25:32It hurts me a lot that there's loads of animals out there,
25:35and my drive is that I'm sad every day,
25:38but that makes me motivated every day.
25:40I think everyone can do something slightly different
25:43to make the planet better.
25:44So, yeah, I see hope.
25:50You can see the animals.

25:51It's in there subtly.
25:53Yes, that's all over you and all around you.
25:57That portrait, which I absolutely adore,
26:00I can't say enough about how much I love it.

26:07I felt a lot of responsibility,
26:08especially because in one respect it was like,
26:11you know, I've really got to represent you
26:13and the sanctuary so well,
26:15but also by doing something that I knew you didn't really want,
