00:00Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the Luska.
00:05This giant cephalopod-like sea creature, half octopus, half shark, is, many believe, the stuff of fantasy.
00:14The kind of fictional monster Jules Verne might dream up.
00:18But then, there are those more open-minded souls, like myself, who believe this gigantic cryptid to be as real
00:26as you or I.
00:27I will present to you the evidence I have collated, proving this animal is no mere figment of the imagination.
00:33And it all begins with the first sighting, off the coast of St. Marie in 1823, by this man.
00:42A pirate by the name of Pierre Lafitte.
00:52Pierre Lafitte was my great-great-great-grandfather.
00:56I'll tell you no lies.
00:58Still got the journal he had when he was pirating away.
01:01Passed on from generation to generation.
01:04And that's why this is the only boat trip where you can experience the exact place my ancestor witnessed.
01:12The Luska.
01:14Roll up, roll up!
01:16You know you want to.
01:17And I promise you guys, you will not be disappointed.
01:22So, how was it?
01:24You're a believer now.
01:26To be honest, I think I'm even less of a believer than I was before.
01:32I don't know why you're bothered.
01:34Because I want to be prepared.
01:37I'm afraid nothing can prepare you for my ex-husband.
01:46Either that's him, or we've come to a soup kitchen by mistake.
01:53Hello, Giles.
01:55Cara.
01:56It's been a while, hasn't it?
01:58Death?
01:58Oh, er.
02:01Stop me.
02:07This is Rory.
02:10Ah, yes.
02:11Didn't realise you were bringing him.
02:14Nice to meet you, Rory.
02:16It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
02:18Can't wait to hear all your stories about the Luska.
02:20Absolutely fascinated about it.
02:22Ah.
02:24Would you like a glass of wine?
02:26Just a cup of coffee will do me, sir.
02:28Um, let me see if I can find a waiter.
02:32Sit down.
02:39So, how are you?
02:41I mean, you know, the anniversary.
02:45Feels strange to be back.
02:48Like it was only yesterday.
02:51I'm taking the boat out later to where it happened.
02:55Fancy joining.
02:56You remember him together?
02:57No, I'd rather stay here with Rory.
03:13Come on.
03:19Poor guy.
03:29All right, we'll let her.
03:48All right, we'll let her.
03:49Then we'll let her.
03:57It's just a bad dream.
04:03Yeah.
04:06How have you been?
04:07Just went for a walk.
04:09That's all.
04:12Thanks.
04:12Bye.還是...
04:19No.
05:20Yes, Mum.
05:21I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
05:22What, I came to visit Uncle Merv anyway?
05:26That's Eloise.
05:27The niece I didn't know I had.
05:29So you're her Uncle Merv.
05:31No, I'm not.
05:33I mean, yes, I am her uncle, but not Merv.
05:35Never Merv, understood?
05:36OK.
05:37Clearly touched a nerve there.
05:41Well, I kind of miss him.
05:42So she's Solomon's daughter?
05:44I don't know why he couldn't just tell me that in the first place.
05:46He could have just said, well, as it happens, I do have a daughter.
05:49Are he and her mother together?
05:51Yeah, not for some time, apparently.
05:52She's supposed to be staying with her Auntie Vondra.
05:55Well, she doesn't like it there, so she ran away and came here.
05:59They've got a case, I assume?
06:01Oh, my God.
06:02It's not a murder case, is it?
06:05Please let me come on a ride along, Uncle Merv.
06:08Please.
06:08Right, so firstly, you're not coming on any ride along.
06:12And secondly, it's not Uncle Merv.
06:15It's Mervyn, remember?
06:18Hi, I'm Naomi, by the way.
06:21I work with your Uncle Merv.
06:25Right, go pack your stuff, young lady.
06:27You've got a boat to catch.
06:29I am sending you back home to Antigua.
06:31Whatever you say, Uncle Merv.
06:33And it's not...
06:37I like her.
06:43Victim's name's Giles Parry, 58 years of age.
06:46Body was found floating six miles out at sea.
06:49Sergeant Fletcher's with the Coast Guard now.
06:51A couple of fishermen going out early this morning came across the body.
06:55But paramedics reckon he'd been in the water since last night.
06:59Thing is, this is already causing a stir on the heart.
07:03Why is that?
07:04Because of those marks on his body.
07:07They're all over his front and his back and the bruising here.
07:12Some people are saying it was caused by the Luska and that's what killed him.
07:17Sorry, what?
07:19It's a sea monster.
07:20A sea monster?
07:21Like a local legend kind of thing.
07:24Half shark, half octopus wraps its tentacles around you and drags you under.
07:28Hence...
07:29A sea monster?
07:30Not everybody believes in this thing.
07:32Most people don't.
07:34Do you?
07:34No, but it's still part of our history, part of our culture.
07:40Right.
07:40Well, we can knock that theory on the head as a possible cause of death, all right?
07:44Except there's a little more to it than that, sir.
07:47That's why he's here.
07:55I've always wondered whether this would come back to haunt me.
07:59Seven years ago yesterday, Giles Parry's 16-year-old son, Benjamin, drowned at sea in the exact same location as
08:12Giles' body was found this morning.
08:14A local fisherman told me that Mr. Parry had sailed out to that spot yesterday to pay his respects.
08:23Then he ended up dead himself?
08:26Mm-hmm.
08:28Was he stormy yesterday?
08:30Called the harbour master.
08:32It was come for the last 24 hours.
08:34And do we know what time he left the harbour?
08:36Just before 7 o'clock, according to the GPS.
08:40Also, there's a boat mechanic who's been fixing Mr. Parry's engine.
08:43He saw him leave.
08:44He says there was definitely nobody else on the boat with him.
08:48It's arrived at the final destination half an hour later.
08:51Radar shows no other boat near it at any point.
08:54So, what happened to him?
08:56How did he end up dead with all those weird markings on him?
09:00Unless, you know, it was the Lusker.
09:05I hate to break it to you, Officer Rose, but sea monsters don't exist.
09:09No, yeah, I know.
09:12Well, it would be cool if they did do all right.
09:15What's that?
09:24Is it a bullet?
09:26Our victim wasn't a shock, right?
09:29No.
09:30And there was no gun found on the boat?
09:32Not that I've found so far.
09:38So, what is that doing here?
09:48I don't know what happened on that boat,
09:51but the fact that we found this on it means it's suspicious.
09:55I think someone else was there, you know?
10:02I'm going to talk to Catherine.
10:04From what I know,
10:06James Parry was an isolated figure,
10:08but he did drink at her bar,
10:10and he would talk to her.
10:12Well, I'm also going to contact the Guadalupe police
10:16and request the Benjamin Parry case files.
10:20So, the search back then wasn't led by the St. Marie team?
10:23As it was,
10:24the Guadalupe Coast Guard,
10:26who was first contacted when the empty boat was discovered,
10:29they stayed there clean.
10:33I bet that wrinkled.
10:34I did push for us to have a role,
10:36but the senior investigating officer wasn't interested.
10:44There's some people on St. Marie
10:47who think I should have pressed harder,
10:50especially when they ran into a dead end earlier on.
10:55It's always been felt more could have been done.
10:59Not by me.
11:05Considering I am already persona non grata,
11:10I would like to do my bit
11:12to try and solve this case now
11:14and win back the community's trust.
11:18I've located the victim's ex-wife.
11:21She and her partner are staying at a hotel just outside town.
11:32We arrived here two days ago
11:34to mark the anniversary of Kara's son's passing.
11:38And I'm sorry to ask, Miss Smart,
11:41but your son Benjamin,
11:43why did he take the boat out on his own?
11:46Giles had always been into UFOs and aliens,
11:51that kind of thing.
11:52Our holidays were spent visiting Loch Ness,
11:55or the Bermuda Triangle.
11:56The Luska here on St. Marie.
11:59Ben was getting even more fanatical than his dad.
12:02That's why he snuck out on his own.
12:05He took the boat we'd hired out
12:07for a last-ditch sighting of the Luska.
12:10The weather turned bad.
12:13The sea was rough.
12:14He never came back.
12:19I kept hoping they'd find him alive
12:23with a life jacket on,
12:24just floating somewhere.
12:25As time passed,
12:27you have to accept that he's not coming back.
12:31So you returned home to England?
12:34After ten months,
12:36Giles and I were arguing non-stop by then.
12:39I just needed some space,
12:41some time to process it all.
12:43Where is he?
12:48Giles was convinced the Luska took their son.
12:52He became obsessed.
12:53That's why he stayed on here when I left,
12:56to try and prove the Luska exists.
12:59And he really, truly believed in it.
13:05And yesterday, did you see Giles at all?
13:09We had an early dinner at five.
13:11It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
13:13And how was that?
13:14How was Giles then?
13:16It was fine.
13:17You know, quiet.
13:19Giles was Giles.
13:21Still as delusional as he ever was.
13:24Did Giles ever own a gun at all?
13:26Not like we were together.
13:28And I struggled to leave.
13:30He bought one while he was out here.
13:32What exactly happened to Giles?
13:34You said that he was found dead at sea.
13:36I assumed it was an accident.
13:38But is there more to it than that?
13:41Well, we're not sure yet.
13:43We're still working on that one.
13:54Hey, my friend's dad swears he saw the Luska one time.
13:57Okay, Seth, come on.
13:59It's never the same afterwards.
14:02Let's keep our focus on the keys.
14:04Let's keep our focus on the keys.
14:40Vondra, Vondra, it's all right.
14:42She's back at my place.
14:43She's safe.
14:44Thanks.
14:44Okay, look, I'll call you back in a bit.
14:47Mo?
14:49Hey, Uncle Mo.
14:51Hope you're hungry.
14:52I ordered Lutz.
14:54Which reminds me, I borrowed your credit card this morning.
14:57Needed it to pay for the boat to get back to St Marie.
14:59And dinner.
15:00You really are your father's daughter, aren't you?
15:03I know, right?
15:04What's going on, Eloise?
15:06Why are you back here?
15:09Because we need to talk about Dad.
15:12We could have done that this morning.
15:14Why didn't you mention it then?
15:15I was waiting for the right moment.
15:17And before I know it, you're shoving me on our boat back home.
15:23All right.
15:24What about your dad?
15:27We need to work out a plan, Uncle Merv.
15:29A plan for what?
15:30To get him out of prison.
15:32To find evidence that proves he's innocent.
15:36OK, um, what exactly did your dad tell you about him being arrested?
15:41Just that he was set up and shouldn't be in jail.
15:45That it's a miscarriage.
15:48A miscarriage of justice.
15:51So, we need to help him, right?
15:57Why don't you go and get some plates and cutlery, yeah?
16:07Sal, you idiots.
16:29Solomon clearly hasn't told her about the scam he got caught up in.
16:32That he is good as shot someone.
16:35And held me hostage.
16:38He's dressed it up like he was the victim.
16:41And she obviously idolizes him.
16:43What are you going to do?
16:45I should just tell her the truth, right?
16:50Just tell her in a nice way.
16:52Not in a your kind of way.
16:57What is a my kind of way?
16:59You know, sometimes you can be a tiny bit insensitive.
17:04Insensitive?
17:06Me, insensitive?
17:08That is rubbish.
17:09I mean, if anything, it's everyone else who is too sensitive.
17:13Sure.
17:14That's totally what it is.
17:19Hey, Louise.
17:22Right, um, I'm off to work now.
17:26So we can have dinner later, yeah?
17:29And we'll, um, we'll talk.
17:33Okay, Uncle Mark.
17:37Old school.
17:38I like it.
17:44Right.
17:45Where are we at with the case?
17:47Anything from the lab yet?
17:49Post-mortem's estimating time of death between 7.30 and 8 p.m.
17:54So, the victim leaves the harbour at 7, dies between 7.30 and 8, out at sea, just after he
18:02drops anchor?
18:03And cause of death was internal bleeding due to a ruptured spleen, which, in theory, could have been caused by
18:12something gripping him tightly, like the tentacles of the Lusk.
18:18Or, more likely, something else.
18:23Same with the red markings, kind of like friction burns, but there's nothing at the scene to suggest what might
18:30have caused it.
18:31What about the search at the victim's house?
18:33Um, Mattia and Seba are just starting.
18:51Sarge, you have to see this.
18:54Ten-year-old Seb will be losing his mind right now.
18:58Like sea monster central in here.
19:04This is gonna be the best search ever.
19:06Alright, Officer Rules.
19:08You start on the computer, I'll hit the cabinets.
19:10Ah, cool.
19:18You alright, Sarge?
19:20Yeah, it's just my old boss from Jamaica, I'll call him once we're done with this.
19:24Alright.
19:35So, what do we know about our victim?
19:37Giles Parry worked as a paramedic back in the UK until he moved out here seven years ago.
19:42Spent all his savings buying a boat and earned a small income giving talks about the legend of the Luska.
19:49What about these two? Any sniff of a motive yet?
19:51We're still waiting on Mr. Lyons' background and financial checks, but he and Kara have been together just over a
19:58year.
19:59Met on a dating app.
20:00Now, as he only met the victim for the first time yesterday, I'm struggling to find a reason for him
20:05wanting Mr. Parry dead.
20:07But, she's a different story.
20:09Ms. Smart previously worked as a teacher before giving that up to write a book a few years ago.
20:15A memoir about losing her son.
20:18I skim read it and she's very honest about how hurt and angry she felt about Giles' behaviour.
20:25When I needed my husband's love the most, he disappeared down the rabbit hole of fantasy,
20:30casting me aside for his futile belief in a mythical beast.
20:35I mean, the guy had gone full-on loony tune, didn't he?
20:38What was that you said earlier about not being insensitive?
20:42Look, I'm not...
20:43Where it gets interesting is the book's no longer bringing in any money.
20:47She's basically broke.
20:49I spoke to her literary agent in the UK and apparently a US TV production company
20:55has offered to make a documentary about her and Giles' son going missing.
20:59It's worth a quarter of a million dollars.
21:02Oh, I'm sensing a but.
21:04It going ahead was dependent on Mr. Parry agreeing to appear in the documentary too.
21:12Don't tell me.
21:13He didn't want to.
21:20So we spoke to the staff here.
21:22Well, that dinner you had with Giles, it wasn't as sedate as you said it was.
21:27According to them, you got quite worked up, Mr. Martz.
21:31Angry that your ex-husband was refusing to agree to the documentary.
21:35Well, that's an exaggeration if ever I heard one.
21:37No, it's not.
21:38It's the truth.
21:38Giles, please, I need this.
21:40Why are you being so stubborn?
21:42Because I know what they'll do.
21:43Make me have to look like some mad conspiracy theorist.
21:46I hate you, Giles.
21:48So much.
21:51I didn't just lose a son seven years ago.
21:54I lost my husband as well.
21:56He never once thought of me that maybe he needed to be there for me.
22:02And even now, years later, I ask for his help because, yes, I need the money.
22:07I thought at least he owed me that one favour, but no, not even that.
22:13Thing is, Miss Martz, we checked with the production company, and that documentary's officially
22:17got the go-ahead.
22:18So now with Giles dying in suspicious circumstances, and even the locals saying it was the Lusker
22:23that did it, well, it's an even more tantalising proposition than it was before.
22:26You get exactly what you wanted.
22:28No, you're wrong.
22:29I didn't kill Giles to get some documentary made.
22:33I'm not that desperate.
22:36I'll hesitate this.
22:39So you want to tell me where you were two nights ago between 7.30 and 8?
22:43We were here at the hotel.
22:46We were together in our room.
22:49It wasn't me.
22:51It just wasn't.
22:54Sir.
23:00That was my tissues with the commissioner.
23:02They've got something.
23:12This is the closest I've come to actually seeing it.
23:15The Lusker.
23:16I'm still shaking from what happened.
23:19If ever there was proof she's out there, this is it.
23:21I've moored my boat a few miles out.
23:23The coordinates are...
23:2416 degrees, 32 minutes, 29.8 seconds north.
23:2961 degrees, 55 minutes, 0.1.8 seconds west.
23:32There's a sinkhole on the seabed there where I had previously identified as a possible home
23:36for the creature.
23:37Amazing.
23:38It was just getting dark when I heard it, felt it, a thud as it hit the bow of the
23:44boat, and
23:45again, and then again.
23:46I could hear it dragging itself along as it tried to pull away.
23:49It was her.
23:50I know it was.
23:52The Lusker.
23:54I've got to go back again tonight.
23:57Totally amazing.
24:05Just to confirm, no one here actually thinks it was the Lusker that was underneath Giles
24:10Parry's boat.
24:11Well, I'm not ruling it out, Inspector.
24:13Apart from Officer Rose.
24:14No, of course we don't.
24:16But there is more to it.
24:19Giles Parry uploaded this vlog to his website two days before his death.
24:23We checked his GPS, and he went back to the same exact location the next night, here.
24:31And this isn't the same location Giles' body was found?
24:35Where his son, Benjamin, went missing?
24:37No, that was two miles away, here.
24:39But the thing is, when Giles got back, he deleted this video straight away.
24:44So why?
24:45Catherine spoke to him shortly after.
24:48And he seemed troubled.
24:51Everything all right, Giles?
24:55He asked me about the Commissioner.
24:57Knew I was friends with him, and said he might need to speak with him.
25:02Is it to do with Benjamin's disappearance?
25:06I don't know.
25:07Maybe.
25:16Hang on.
25:17These are the same cauldron that he talked about in his vlog.
25:19I don't know what happened there.
25:21But it's clearly of significance.
25:25We should go out there.
25:27Do a reenactment, yeah?
25:29Same time, same place, same boat.
25:31Find out what this X is all about.
25:33I was so hoping you was going to say that, Inspector.
25:35I can't believe you're going on a monster hunt.
25:39That's not what we're doing.
25:40That's not what you're doing.
25:49I don't understand.
25:51If you're going on a boat trip, why can't I come?
25:54Because it might be dangerous.
25:56Well, then I really want to come.
25:58Well, you can't.
25:59You're staying with Catherine tonight, and we're getting you home first thing in the morning, all right?
26:03But we need to talk about Dad still.
26:09Okay.
26:11Look, about your Dad.
26:12I don't know what he told you, but it certainly wasn't factual.
26:16What he was arrested for, it's serious.
26:19And I should know, because I was there when it happened.
26:23What are you saying?
26:26Eloise.
26:29Listen, there was no miscarriage of justice, all right?
26:32He wasn't falsely accused.
26:34Your Dad is guilty.
26:36So, no, I can't help you find new evidence.
26:40And he'll be in prison for a while.
26:43I'm sorry.
26:46So, what happens now?
26:47I just go back home in the morning?
26:51Yeah, of course.
26:53I mean, that's where your Mum is, right?
26:55And you don't want to stay with me, do you?
26:58Of course I don't.
27:00I've got a life to get on with.
27:03So, what's your problem?
27:06This must be Eloise.
27:09It's nice to meet you.
27:11Hey, thanks for looking after me.
27:13See you all, Mervin.
27:20So, my chef, will you cook you anything you cook?
27:39Hey, Inspector.
27:40Ready for my car stop?
27:42Uh-huh.
27:45You know, sir, this isn't exactly the safest boat I've been on.
27:49The two liferings there are missing their ropes,
27:51so let's hope no one goes overboard.
28:02Is that the Benjamin Perry case for?
28:04Oh!
28:05Just arrived from Guadalupe.
28:07The Commissioner's making a start going through a town.
28:31Can I speak to you for a minute about a private master commissioner?
28:42Of course.
28:43I got a couple of missed calls
28:45for my old bus in Jamaica today,
28:47and I haven't called him back
28:50because I think I know what it's to do with.
28:53He phoned me as well, actually.
28:57Damod Dyer was acquitted on all courts.
29:01He's a free man.
29:03I'm sorry.
29:06Have you told any of the team?
29:10Uh, Seb knows I had a boyfriend
29:13that I broke up with before I came here,
29:16and I told him that I had messed up on a case
29:21but not that the two were connected.
29:23That my ex is a criminal.
29:28I think I'd rather keep it that way for now.
29:32Nearing the destination now, Commissioner.
29:35Dropping the anchor soon.
29:36Thank you, Officer Rose.
29:38Aye, aye, Captain.
29:40Aye, aye.
29:48Must have been frustrating
29:49not having oversight of that case.
30:00The last car?
30:02It can't be.
30:03Whatever it is,
30:04it's the same song
30:05Giles Barry heard.
30:10You hear it, Ax?
30:12Yeah, we heard it.
30:13Can you see anything?
30:14No, it's not the last car.
30:16Sure-son like it is.
30:17Can you see anything outside?
30:18No, nothing.
30:20Me neither.
30:21Anything now?
30:22Over here, there's something moving.
30:23Where?
30:24Yes, Thomas?
30:25There's something down there.
30:26I can see you moving.
30:28Sergeant Fletcher,
30:29what are you doing?
30:30That ain't no sea monster.
30:35Matty!
30:47Stupid woman!
30:48You cut my ass a play!
30:50That's Kelvin Mason.
30:52He runs a boat excursion business
30:54in the harbor.
30:55There's some sort of box
30:56under there.
30:57It looks like it's time to wait.
30:59Stop it moving.
31:14Inspector, here's the box
31:15we salvaged from the sea.
31:19Your gun.
31:20We found on your jet ski,
31:22Mr Mason.
31:26Your keys.
31:27Let's see if one of these fits,
31:29shall we?
31:33Your box.
31:45Cocaine, I'm guessing.
31:47Around two kilos.
31:49You'll be charged for this.
31:53Look,
31:54I'm just a middleman,
31:56all right?
31:56I don't sell it.
31:57I don't buy it.
31:59I just make some extra money
32:00moving it from A to B.
32:01Giles Parry was on to you,
32:03wasn't he?
32:03At first,
32:04he thought it was the Luska
32:06making those noises
32:07beneath his boat.
32:11I didn't know
32:11he'd moored above me.
32:13Couldn't stop myself
32:14from hitting it
32:15when I came back up.
32:16That's what he heard.
32:17Me banging against
32:18the bottom of his boat.
32:19And when he went
32:20to the same location
32:21a second time
32:22to try and cut sight of it...
32:24Hello,
32:25the Luska.
32:25I've got to go back
32:26again tonight.
32:27He discovered
32:28what you were up to.
32:29That's why he was talking
32:30about going to the police.
32:32Said he might need
32:33to speak with him.
32:35I didn't know he'd seen me.
32:36When I went back
32:37to the harbour...
32:39I know what you're up to, Kelvin.
32:41I pleaded with him
32:42not to say anything
32:43to the police.
32:44Take him down.
32:44Look him off.
32:45Got to know Giles
32:46quite a bit over the years.
32:48Helped him with his research
32:49a couple of times,
32:50so I thought
32:51he might give me a chance.
32:53And?
32:54He told me
32:55he'd think about it.
32:58But didn't reckon
32:59he could ignore it.
33:01The next thing
33:01he's found floating
33:02six miles out of sea,
33:04dead.
33:04I didn't do that to him,
33:06I swear!
33:07His gun of yours,
33:08what calibre is it?
33:10It's a nine millimetre.
33:11Why?
33:12Because we found
33:13a nine millimetre bullet
33:14on Giles Perry's boat.
33:15Is that a coincidence,
33:16Mr Mason?
33:17Yes, it is.
33:18I wasn't anywhere
33:19near his boat
33:20when he died.
33:21Mr Mason,
33:22you were questioned
33:23seven years ago
33:24when Giles' son
33:26disappeared
33:26as a witness.
33:28Everybody around
33:29the harbour was.
33:30Was that got to do
33:31with anything?
33:32So,
33:32that also is just
33:34a coincidence.
33:36Yes, it is.
33:38Look,
33:38if it wasn't you,
33:39then where were you
33:40at 7.30
33:41the night Giles Perry
33:42was murdered?
33:43Um,
33:44I was taking a drink
33:45with a guy
33:46who works for me,
33:47a fella named Jackson.
33:50You fancy another?
33:51Call him,
33:52ask him,
33:53he'll tell you.
33:53I swear!
33:57But,
33:59there's something else
34:00you all need to know.
34:01Something that happened
34:02before Giles
34:03took his boat out.
34:05Poor guy.
34:07I went
34:07to speak with him
34:09to see if he changed
34:10his mind about
34:11talking with the police.
34:13When I turned
34:14the corner,
34:15he was arguing
34:16with someone.
34:18Giles called him
34:19Rory.
34:20I know your game,
34:21Rory.
34:22Giles said he had
34:23evidence of some kind.
34:25I didn't hear
34:26what,
34:27but he took out
34:27this folder
34:28and he gave it to him.
34:30Now that the Rory
34:31fella,
34:32he didn't seem
34:32too happy,
34:33got a bit
34:34physical.
34:35He shoved Giles.
34:37Giles fell over
34:38and hurt himself.
34:40Then what did you do?
34:41I turned and left.
34:58Right,
34:59let's get over
34:59to the hotel.
35:00Let's interview
35:01our new suspect.
35:06Sir,
35:08with respect,
35:09shouldn't we just
35:10focus on solving
35:11the Giles Perry case
35:12right now?
35:13This isn't a
35:14cold case investigation.
35:15And we've got
35:16a new lead now.
35:17I just have this feeling
35:18the answer lies
35:19right here in front of me.
35:21If only I knew
35:22what it was.
35:23OK.
35:28I admit we argued,
35:30Giles and I.
35:31It was more than
35:32an argument,
35:33Mr Lyons,
35:33from what we were told.
35:34Things might have
35:36got a bit physical,
35:37but what he was saying
35:38upset me.
35:39Which was what exactly?
35:41That I was only
35:42with Cara for her money.
35:46Rory only told me
35:47about this last night.
35:49Giles had
35:49scrabbled together
35:51enough money
35:51to pay a private
35:53investigator
35:54to look into
35:55Rory
35:55and his
35:56ex.
35:57That's what he found.
36:01So your previous
36:03partner
36:04invested in
36:05your business,
36:06which went bankrupt.
36:09She's still
36:09chasing you
36:10for money?
36:11It was a total
36:12mess I made.
36:13Financially
36:15and personally.
36:17Everything in that
36:18file,
36:18it's all true.
36:20Apart from
36:21the suggestion
36:21that I'm doing
36:22the same again
36:23with Cara
36:23because I'm not.
36:24I think that's
36:25why Giles
36:25wouldn't agree
36:26to the documentary.
36:27He thought
36:28that Rory
36:28would take
36:29the money.
36:29But I don't
36:30want a penny.
36:31I just want
36:32to be with Cara.
36:34So why did you
36:35follow Mr. Perry
36:36down to the harbour
36:37after dinner?
36:38Because he was
36:38being so unforgiving
36:39towards Cara,
36:41saying that
36:41she was using
36:42their son's tragedy
36:43to line her own
36:43pockets.
36:44I wanted him
36:44to know the truth.
36:50We're adopting
36:51a baby,
36:53starting a family
36:55and it's taken
36:56all the courage
36:57in the world
36:57for her to do
36:58this.
36:58And you told him?
37:06All Cara wants
37:08is to be a family.
37:13I get through him.
37:15Then he picked up
37:16his things
37:17and got on his boat.
37:19And that's the last
37:19time you saw him?
37:23Mr. Lyons?
37:24Rory?
37:27He phoned me
37:29and I got back
37:30to the hotel
37:30about half an hour
37:32later.
37:33He was out
37:34at sea.
37:35What did he say?
37:38He asked if I
37:39loved Cara.
37:41Like he needed
37:42to get it
37:43confirmed.
37:44And you said?
37:49Yes, I do.
37:50So very much.
37:57then he just
37:58hung up.
38:17So a few minutes
38:18before he dies,
38:19Giles Parry phones
38:20his ex-wife's
38:21new partner
38:22to ask if he loves her.
38:24That doesn't sound like
38:25he was being attacked
38:25by a sea monster
38:26or murdered.
38:28Nope.
38:29It sounds to me like
38:30a guy who'd
38:30finally made his peace
38:32with the world.
38:33Which kind of
38:34makes me wonder,
38:35you know.
38:37Did Giles Parry
38:38take his own life?
38:39But then try to make
38:40it look like
38:41it was the Lusker
38:42that did it
38:42to prove to everyone
38:44that he was right
38:44all along.
38:46That doesn't feel right.
38:48Anyway,
38:48that doesn't explain
38:49the bullet.
38:50Why was that there?
38:51So what happened?
38:53He was alone
38:54on that boat,
38:55six miles out at sea,
38:56and our three suspects
38:57were all on dry land
38:59when he died.
39:00How and why
39:02did he end up dead?
39:05Maybe these two
39:06have the answer.
39:09Just come straight
39:10from the lab.
39:11Police tell me
39:12it's good news.
39:13There are no striation
39:14marks on the bullet.
39:16so they can't match
39:17it to Kelvin Mason's
39:18gun.
39:19Same make,
39:19same calibre,
39:20but...
39:20Hang on.
39:21No striation marks
39:22at all.
39:23Said they've been
39:24worn a wave
39:25by incrustation
39:27of marine organisms.
39:29Corrosion patterns
39:30suggest that bullet
39:31has been on the
39:32seabed for six
39:33to eight years.
39:34Basically,
39:35they're just saying
39:35the bullet is some
39:36sea debris.
39:37But that doesn't
39:37explain how it ended
39:39up on the boat
39:39in the first place.
39:47Did Giles Pyre
39:48take his own life?
39:49The two liferings
39:51there are missing
39:51their ropes.
39:52Giles Pyre worked
39:53as a paramedic
39:54back in the UK
39:55until he moved
39:56out here seven
39:56years ago.
39:57Now that the Rory
39:58fella, he didn't
39:59seem too happy.
40:00Got a bit
40:01physical.
40:02Is it to do
40:03with Benjamin's
40:04disappearance?
40:05I don't know.
40:06He asked if I
40:07loved Kara.
40:09Bingo.
40:10I know what
40:11happened to Giles
40:12and how he ended
40:12up dead like that.
40:28Sir, we cracked
40:30the case.
40:31Benjamin
40:31Parry's
40:32disappearance.
40:33I think I know
40:34what happened.
40:38Spot the
40:40difference.
41:01We have a lot to
41:02thank this little
41:03bullet for.
41:04It's helped us
41:05make sense of the
41:06present and the past.
41:08In the present,
41:09it's what solved
41:10the mystery of your
41:11ex-husband's death,
41:12Miss Smart.
41:13Leading me to
41:14finally understand
41:15why and how
41:16Giles Parry's body
41:17was found dead
41:18in the water,
41:19looking like the
41:20Lusker, the
41:21legendary sea monster
41:22he'd spent seven
41:23years searching for,
41:25had finally caught
41:26up with him.
41:26And in terms of
41:27the past?
41:29We'll come to that
41:30shortly.
41:31Throughout this
41:32case, we've worked
41:33on the basis that
41:34whatever happened to
41:36Mr. Parry, it all
41:37happened at the
41:38same time while he
41:39was out at sea.
41:41But we've now
41:42realised that his
41:44injuries were
41:45actually sustained
41:46in two separate
41:47locations.
41:48The first injury,
41:50the bruising to his
41:51stomach and the
41:52rupturing of his
41:53spleen, that
41:54happened on dry
41:54land, down by the
41:57harbour, when you
41:58and he tussled,
41:59Rory.
42:00You're saying it
42:01was me?
42:02You will be charged
42:03with involuntary
42:04manslaughter.
42:05We know you
42:06didn't mean to
42:07kill Giles, far
42:08from it.
42:09However, his
42:10subsequent fall
42:11from your push
42:12caused a serious
42:14internal injury.
42:17He just didn't
42:18know it at the
42:19time.
42:20Oh my God.
42:22Giles was totally
42:23unaware that his
42:24life was slipping
42:25away.
42:25That's why he
42:26walked away from
42:27you, got on his
42:28boat and went
42:29out to sea.
42:31He was probably
42:33already a few miles
42:34out when he started
42:35to feel ill.
42:37Initially, some
42:38discomfort in his
42:39abdomen, feeling
42:41faint, feverish.
42:43But it was only by
42:44the time he reached
42:46his destination, six
42:47miles from land, that
42:49he fully comprehended
42:50what was happening.
42:52We know Giles used to
42:54be a paramedic, so it's
42:56safe to assume he
42:58worked out what was
42:59wrong, that he had
43:01minutes left to
43:03live.
43:04I'm so sorry.
43:06And if his imminent
43:07death wasn't a grim
43:08enough prospect, Mr.
43:10Parry also realised
43:10that if his body was
43:11found on deck, we
43:14would start to question
43:14how he was fatally
43:15injured.
43:16And the post-mortem
43:17would more than likely
43:18lead back to the
43:19altercation he had with
43:20you, Mr. Lyons, and
43:22subsequently, some time
43:23in prison.
43:24And knowing what you
43:25told him about yourself
43:27and Kara wanting to
43:27start a family, well,
43:30he didn't want to
43:31inflict any further
43:32suffering on you both.
43:33That's where he
43:34phoned and asked
43:36Rory if he loved me.
43:38That's why he needed
43:39to know, to be sure.
43:42Do you love her?
43:43He could protect you
43:45both by making it
43:47look like he killed
43:49himself.
43:52It was Dias Tomasi
43:53who noticed the ropes
43:55were missing from the
43:55life rings on Giles'
43:56boat.
43:57The two life rings
43:58there are missing
43:59their ropes, so let's
44:00hope no one goes
44:01overboard.
44:02I didn't think
44:03anything of it at
44:03first.
44:04But then when I
44:05started to understand
44:06what happened that
44:08day, that's when I
44:09realized why those
44:11ropes weren't there.
44:16And hopefully this
44:17call will confirm it.
44:20Yeah.
44:21They found the ropes
44:22tied to the boat's
44:23spare battery on the
44:24seabed.
44:30So, we think Giles knew
44:32that if he tied those
44:34ropes around his body
44:35tightly enough, then
44:36leave red markings,
44:38friction burn.
44:39And therefore, when his
44:40body was found, he hoped
44:41this would also explain
44:43his internal injuries,
44:45the bruising.
44:46all so it would misdirect
44:48from you, Mr.
44:50Lyons.
44:51Any similarities to the
44:52Luska was a coincidence.
44:54If that's what happened,
44:56why was his body found
44:57floating on the surface?
44:58Because of this, as Giles sank
45:03to the seabed, by some
45:06quirk of fate, he saw
45:08this bullet.
45:09Maybe it got caught under a
45:12rock or wedged in some
45:14coral.
45:15We can't be sure.
45:17But there it was, a single
45:20bullet in the same spot
45:22his son went missing.
45:24And after his recent
45:26discovery of the smuggling
45:27that was going on out at
45:28sea, not far from the same
45:30spot, Giles was already
45:32beginning to suspect that
45:33his son's, your son's
45:34disappearance might have
45:36been for more sinister
45:37reasons.
45:38Is it to do with
45:39Benjamin's disappearance?
45:41Maybe.
45:42So, we believe he
45:44loosened the rope,
45:46grabbed the bullet and
45:48allowed himself to float
45:49to the surface, determined
45:51to cling to life as long
45:54as possible.
45:55But by then, it was
45:57already too late for him
45:58to climb back on board
45:58his boat.
45:59So, with his life ebbing
46:01away, Giles did one last
46:03thing.
46:03One final attempt to let
46:05everyone know what he
46:06discovered on the seabed.
46:10He threw this bullet onto
46:12the deck.
46:13A message from him to us
46:15to not give up on his son.
46:17But maybe Ben's killer was
46:20still out there.
46:22That's what you meant about
46:23the bullet helping with the
46:24past.
46:25My son's case.
46:29And has it?
46:37That bullet we found, it turns
46:41out it's been sat on the
46:43seabed for the last seven
46:45years, in the exact same
46:47location, Giles and Kara's son
46:50went missing.
46:52It was fired from your gun to
46:55kill Benjamin Parry.
46:58But he drowned at sea.
47:00Why are you no saying he was
47:01shot?
47:08This photograph was taken the
47:11day before Benjamin went
47:12missing.
47:15It's of him and his father
47:16outside your office.
47:19And this was taken by one of the
47:23Guadalupe police officers the day
47:25after he disappeared.
47:28Your witness statement is
47:30unremarkable in every way apart
47:34from this photograph.
47:36I had to get the magnifying glass
47:39out to really notice.
47:42But in this photograph of Benjamin
47:45and his father, the wall behind
47:48your desk is set farther back from
47:51the window than it is in this
47:54photograph of you where it appears
47:5740 or 50 centimeters closer to it.
48:01which left me wondering, why less
48:05than 48 hours later, your office
48:09had seemingly shrunk.
48:12The only conclusion I could draw was
48:15because a new wall had been built.
48:18Leaving Benjamin's body at sea would
48:22have meant there was a possibility
48:23he could be found.
48:25And if he was, then it would be
48:29discovered that he'd been shot.
48:33Whereas if you hid his body and
48:36everybody assumed he drowned at sea,
48:39then maybe you'd get away with it.
48:45But where to hide it?
48:48We have a team at your office as we
48:51speak about to tear down.
48:56So if I'm wrong about what's been
48:59hidden behind it the last seven
49:01years, you have nothing to worry
49:04about.
49:05But if I am right, now is your chance
49:10to start talking.
49:24That morning, seven years ago, it was real early.
49:34But when I got back up with the day's delivery,
49:38he was there recording me on his phone
49:42for evidence.
49:44I mean, stupid idiot.
49:47Why would you do that?
49:48Because you left me no choice.
49:51I had to act fast.
49:53So I got the lockbox.
49:55Which you moved to a new location
49:58two miles away, where your smuggling
50:02continued until Giles Parry discovered
50:06what you were doing all these years.
50:09And Benjamin Parry's body.
50:16I took it ashore.
50:20I put them in one of the cases
50:23with all the diving gear.
50:25It's airtight, so I spent the whole day
50:29getting everything I needed for that wall.
50:34I spent the whole night building it.
50:37And I have lived with it every day since.
50:42Why, now you go.
50:43And y'all let me know how it went, huh?
50:46You're with real pirate royalty now, huh?
50:49Knowing that poor boy is stuck behind that wall
50:52will haunt me forever.
51:00Galvin Mason, I'm arresting you
51:03for the murder of Benjamin Parry.
51:05You do not have to say anything,
51:07but it may harm your defense
51:08if you do not mention my question.
51:11Something which you do.
51:19This call is from a person
51:21currently in prison in Antigua.
51:25Solomon.
51:27Mervyn.
51:28I know you said you didn't want anything
51:29to do with me no more,
51:30but this isn't about me.
51:31It's about Eloise.
51:33I know she ran away from her aunt
51:35and came to you
51:35because she doesn't like it there.
51:37No, it's because you told her you were innocent
51:39and I'd get you out.
51:40You lied to her.
51:41Maybe I was a bit free and easy
51:42with the truth, but...
51:44She's there because she needs you.
51:46She doesn't even know me.
51:47She does a bit.
51:49I told her some things.
51:51That you were...
51:53You were a good man.
51:56Solomon, I can't...
51:59I know I'm not.
52:01I have made a mess of pretty much everything in my life,
52:04but that's why I'm asking you this one thing.
52:07This one favor.
52:10Her mom and aunt are cool,
52:11but she's her dad's girl, you know?
52:14Me and her...
52:16is something special.
52:19And her stupid father's got himself stuck in prison,
52:21so...
52:23she really needs her uncle in her life right now.
52:26Because you're the closest thing she's got to me.
52:38So, that's the queen.
52:40She's the one to keep her eye on.
52:42All you have to do
52:43is find the lady.
53:02wrong again
53:04was
53:04here
53:06all along.
53:23I've had people arrested in Covent Garden for that, you know?
53:25Your dad taught you, I assume.
53:31Look, I'm...
53:33I'm not good at this kind of thing, okay?
53:36Maybe because I've never been an uncle before.
53:42What I'm trying to tell you...
53:43You don't know what you're doing.
53:47When you haven't had a proper family in your life,
53:51like I haven't,
53:53you kind of grow up
53:54assuming people don't want you
53:56or need you.
53:58But
53:59when you came to me,
54:00I should have been there for you,
54:01and I'm sorry that I wasn't.
54:05But if you're up for
54:07giving your Uncle Merv
54:08a second chance,
54:09then
54:10maybe we can try again.
54:12And I can get to know my niece properly.
54:15Because however it might have looked,
54:19I would really,
54:21really like that.
54:23You want a shake on it?
54:25We can do better than that.
54:29After all this time,
54:31I've given up any hope
54:32of my son's body
54:33being returned to me.
54:35So to stand here
54:36knowing
54:38my boy
54:38will be returned home
54:40to England,
54:40it means the world to me.
54:43So I'd like to thank
54:45the St. Marie Police Force
54:47for all their hard work
54:49in achieving this.
54:50It's a divert from the station.
54:52When all hope is lost,
54:53and it seems like
54:55you might never get the answer.
54:56Yeah.
54:59But I'd especially like to thank
55:02Commissioner Selwyn Patterson
55:04for uncovering a truth
55:06that no one else was able to.
55:08I will be forever grateful.
55:17That's good, ma'am.
55:18It's for you.
55:20You're the man.
55:31So, uh,
55:32that diverged.
55:33It's for you.
55:34Some guy named Damon
55:37said to give him a card
55:38when he got that charm.
55:59I'm going to go eat,
56:00Inspector, Sarge,
56:01Inspector's niece.
56:03Catherine invited us all.
56:05It feels like
56:06there's a lot to celebrate.
56:07And you can build up a hunger
56:08when you're hunting sea monsters,
56:10you know.
56:10Sea monsters?
56:12He didn't tell me
56:13what hunting sea monsters.
56:15That's because we weren't.
56:16Well, not all of us anyway.
56:18All right, Eloise,
56:19this is Commissioner Patterson,
56:20my boss.
56:21It's a pleasure
56:22to meet you.
56:23You too.
56:25Right, let's go.
56:26Come on.
56:26You like playing card games,
56:28Commissioner Patterson?
56:29All right, let's not start
56:30going down that road,
56:31young lady.
56:32He demands speak for himself.
56:33As it happens,
56:34I do like playing cards.
56:36Yeah, but not the kind
56:37of card she wants to play.
56:39Honestly, Commissioner,
56:39in fact, everyone
56:40do not play cards
56:41with this girl.
56:42Uncle Mark!
56:43Oh!
56:51Was she just trying
56:52to hustle the Commissioner?
56:55Yeah.
56:56Welcome to my family.
