00:32For law enforcement, one of their biggest priorities
00:35was to figure out who would want to do this to either of them.
00:40The evidence seems to point to a jealous stalker.
00:44She had mentioned that a guy named John with dreads had followed her.
00:49He would pop up like in crazy places.
00:54But as the investigation unfolds,
00:57detectives begin to question everything about the case.
01:02This troll of blood led to the kitchen.
01:06There was two knives missing.
01:08How did the suspect know exactly where to go to get the knife?
01:15Didn't it not make sense to me?
01:17The math just was not math.
01:20Detectives are starting to believe that John really didn't exist.
01:40January 17th, 2010.
01:43It's 3.30 a.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana,
01:47when police receive an emergency call from 24-year-old Kamithia Coleman.
02:04She's saying that her boyfriend, Ryan Spinks,
02:08they both have been attacked.
02:09This person ran out of the apartment,
02:12and she doesn't know where he is.
02:16Help me.
02:18I guess I took the knife out of here.
02:21Help me.
02:23Okay, he was damned.
02:25Help me.
02:29Minutes later, officers arrive at the address,
02:32where they find 29-year-old Brian Spinks
02:35lying motionless by the door.
02:37I could see stab wounds about the head.
02:41I could see a slash across his throat.
02:45There was a great amount of blood
02:48to where when you step into the living room,
02:50you could hear the sound of liquid in the carpet.
02:55They were able to quickly establish that Brian was dead.
03:01Kim is screaming hysterically,
03:03and she's yelling,
03:04why would he do this?
03:09The officers secure the scene
03:11and escort Kamithia out of the apartment.
03:14They try to calm her down
03:16so she can explain what happened.
03:20Kamithia appeared to be in a state of shock.
03:22She was covered head to toe in blood,
03:26and she was very distraught.
03:29When they asked her who did this,
03:31she described a man with dreadlocks in a red shirt.
03:36She said he left.
03:37She didn't know which direction he went.
03:41It's normal for a victim
03:43or someone who sees a traumatic event
03:46not to be able to divulge what occurred right then.
03:51She was also injured,
03:52so we had to get her treatment
03:54and take her to the hospital.
03:56She had several lacerations to her hands
03:59as well as to her abdomen and her leg.
04:07As Kamithia is transported to a hospital,
04:10homicide detectives arrive to take over the investigation.
04:15Before entering the apartment,
04:17they speak with two potential witnesses.
04:21The initial responding officers
04:23had located a vehicle at the apartment complex.
04:27The vehicle was stopped,
04:29and the individuals were contacted
04:31and found out to be friends of Ms. Kamithia Coleman.
04:36They were with her earlier in the day.
04:39They had arrived at the apartment to check on her
04:42when she didn't answer her phone.
04:46Whenever we interview witnesses,
04:48we want to find out anything we can,
04:50whatever they know.
04:52What type of relationship they have with the victim,
04:56what knowledge they have prior to the events that occurred.
05:00For law enforcement,
05:01one of their biggest priorities
05:02was to figure out who was Brian Spinks,
05:05who was Kamithia Coleman,
05:07and who would want to hurt them,
05:10who would want to do this to either of them.
05:19Brian Dennis Spinks was born December 15, 1980,
05:24in St. Louis, Missouri.
05:26He grew up in a family
05:27with a proud history of military service.
05:31Brian was the second child, but the first boy.
05:33And subsequently, he had two younger brothers.
05:37His father was in the military.
05:39Our mother, she was a DOD,
05:42Department of Defense employee,
05:43for security assistance.
05:45It goes all the way back to his great-grandfather
05:49being in the Korean War.
05:50My father and my grandfather
05:53were both in the World War II.
05:55And then, of course, me in the Marine Corps.
06:01After high school in 1999,
06:03Brian followed the family tradition
06:05and enlisted in the Air Force.
06:08But before he deployed,
06:10his life changed.
06:12I met Brian Spinks,
06:14I want to say back in the summer of 2000.
06:17It was my senior year of high school.
06:19Brian had just joined the Air Force.
06:21And he had swung by the high school
06:23to help with all the recruiters.
06:26Brian was very attractive,
06:27and his smile was remarkable.
06:31We dated for about six months,
06:33and I thought that I was pregnant with Amani.
06:39In January 2001,
06:42Brian became a father.
06:43But the romance didn't last.
06:46The, of course, military obligations,
06:50and I felt alone
06:51because the military had number one priority.
06:54He was going to do the full ride.
06:56Wouldn't have had a problem
06:57getting a job after the Air Force.
07:04Shortly after Amani was born,
07:05Brian was going to Iraq.
07:07He took long tours.
07:10He, you know,
07:11did with it the best he could
07:12and spoke to his son when he could,
07:15had the relationship with his son's mom.
07:17They co-parented.
07:20It was very difficult,
07:21especially as Amani started getting older.
07:25When we did spend time together in person,
07:29we had a good time.
07:30He made me feel loved.
07:32And, you know,
07:32I cried when he left.
07:34But I understand what he was doing.
07:36He had to serve his country.
07:43While stationed in Montgomery,
07:45he had a daughter
07:46with another woman in the Air Force.
07:48Once she became pregnant,
07:50she got discharged from the Air Force
07:52and went home to,
07:53I think, Buffalo, New York.
07:55So that was difficult in itself.
07:57And Brian only got to see her a few times.
08:00He did the best he could from a distance.
08:03But while on deployment,
08:05Brian's focus was on the men in his unit.
08:08Brian and I met
08:09when I was in the Air Force
08:11back in 2002.
08:13He and I were both stationed
08:14at Barksdale Air Force
08:16based in Louisiana.
08:16He was kind of the organizer
08:19between all of us.
08:21We all just kind of meshed
08:23because it was the only family
08:24that we had.
08:24You know,
08:25our families were in different countries,
08:26different places.
08:27And he made sure
08:29that we had a place
08:31to come and congregate.
08:35By the time he returned home
08:37in 2008,
08:39Brian was ready
08:40to focus on his family.
08:42When he came home,
08:43it was always about Imani.
08:45It was good, you know.
08:47He talked,
08:48he checked on me.
08:49I ain't want for nothing.
08:54At a friend's get-together
08:56later that year,
08:57Brian met someone new.
08:58A young woman
09:00named Kamethea Coleman.
09:03Kamethea Coleman
09:04was from a small town
09:06about 30 minutes
09:07outside of Shreveport.
09:09Just about everyone
09:10who knew her
09:10loved her
09:11and liked her.
09:12She was very popular.
09:14Prom queen,
09:15homecoming queen,
09:17you name it.
09:18Kamethea was a very sweet girl.
09:20I talked to her
09:21almost every Sunday
09:22and she would always
09:23be in church.
09:24Kamethea went on
09:25to go to Grambling State University.
09:27She chose a life of service
09:29as a social worker.
09:30She dedicated her life
09:32to serving
09:32and helping
09:34other people.
09:35She was just,
09:37seemed like
09:37almost the perfect girl
09:40to introduce
09:41to your family
09:42and to settle down with.
09:43Brian had never been
09:44this serious
09:45about someone
09:46until
09:48Kamethea came along.
09:53But little more
09:54than a year
09:55after they began dating,
09:56Brian has been killed
09:58by an unknown assailant
10:00and investigators
10:01are now questioning
10:02two women
10:03outside the couple's
10:04apartment.
10:06One was a
10:07long-time friend,
10:08the Kamethea Coleman's
10:09and then the second
10:10individual was her sister.
10:12The friend advises
10:13that she had been
10:15at the club
10:15with her sister
10:16and Miss Coleman
10:18downtown
10:18in Shreveport.
10:20The women say
10:21Kamethea seemed
10:22upset that evening
10:24and it had something
10:25to do with another man.
10:28She had mentioned
10:29to the sisters
10:30that a guy named
10:32John with dreads
10:33had followed her.
10:34One of the sisters
10:36said that she did see
10:37someone at the club
10:39with dreads,
10:39but a lot of
10:40black males
10:41at that time
10:42wore dreads
10:43and so nothing
10:43stood out to her.
10:45They say Brian
10:46was also at the club,
10:48but neither he
10:49nor Kamethea
10:50stayed for long.
10:52There's a brief
10:53conversation
10:54between the two
10:55and Brian leaves.
10:57Then the friends
10:58notice,
10:59minutes later,
11:01Kamethea leaves.
11:04And within a few
11:05minutes of Kamethea
11:06leaving,
11:07they left
11:08to see if Kamethea's
11:09car was still there
11:10and they didn't see it.
11:12So they went
11:13to Brian's
11:14to make sure
11:15she got where
11:15she was going.
11:16When they got there,
11:18they heard the screaming
11:18and they saw
11:20the police coming
11:21and they knew
11:21something was
11:22terribly wrong.
11:24To detectives,
11:26the women appeared
11:26genuine in their
11:27account of the evening.
11:29So the investigation
11:31is just beginning.
11:33We didn't have
11:34enough to go on,
11:36so we needed
11:36to speak with Kamethea
11:38to find out
11:39who is John
11:40and get more
11:41information on
11:42why he followed
11:43her to Brian's
11:44apartment.
11:49Coming up,
11:50evidence reveals
11:52the brutality
11:53of the attack.
11:54The fact that
11:56the knife was broken
11:57is indicative
11:58of a very powerful
12:00or angry
12:01strike.
12:03And detectives
12:04speak with Kamethea.
12:07I don't know
12:07what's the part.
12:09You gotta tell me
12:10to come back
12:11from the kitchen.
12:13It's not you.
12:31After speaking
12:32with Kamethea
12:33Coleman's friends
12:34about the events
12:35leading up
12:36to the fatal
12:37stabbing
12:37of Brian Spinks,
12:39investigators
12:40turned their
12:41attention
12:41to the crime
12:42scene.
12:44Police are not
12:45able to talk
12:45to Kim.
12:46Her wounds
12:47are being tended
12:48to,
12:49and they're
12:50hoping that
12:50the scene
12:51could give
12:52them the
12:53answers
12:54to this puzzle.
12:56This crime
12:57scene was one
12:58of the bloodiest
12:59that I've ever
12:59seen.
13:01They observed
13:02what they thought
13:02to be at least
13:0330 wounds
13:04to Brian.
13:06The cut
13:07from his neck,
13:08which almost
13:09had decapitated
13:10Brian,
13:11was what
13:11the lethal blow
13:12was.
13:16The amount
13:17of blood
13:17in the apartments
13:18and the amount
13:19of injuries
13:19that Brian
13:21sustained
13:21is indicative
13:23of a person
13:25with a lot
13:25of rage
13:26or anger.
13:27They have
13:28some reason
13:29to be mad
13:30enough
13:30to do
13:31that kind
13:32of damage
13:33and that much
13:34damage
13:35to another
13:36individual.
13:40The murder
13:41weapons,
13:42a pair
13:42of knives
13:43found near
13:43Brian's body,
13:45seemed to
13:45confirm
13:46their assessment.
13:47There was
13:48a knife
13:49that was
13:50intact.
13:51There was
13:52also another
13:53knife that
13:53was close
13:53by that
13:54was a handle
13:55and the
13:55blade was
13:56located in
13:56another part
13:57of the living
13:58room.
13:58The fact
13:59that the
14:00knife was
14:00broken
14:01is indicative
14:02of a very
14:03powerful
14:04or angry
14:04strike.
14:07This trail
14:08of blood
14:08led to
14:09the kitchen
14:10and they
14:11noticed
14:11that on
14:13the kitchen
14:13counter
14:14is this
14:15knife block.
14:17There was
14:18two knives
14:18missing
14:19from the
14:20knife block
14:20that also
14:21matched
14:22the knives
14:23that were
14:23laying next
14:24to
14:25Brian Sphinx's
14:26body.
14:27And now
14:28they are able
14:30to kind
14:30of put
14:31the pieces
14:32together
14:33that these
14:34two knives
14:34came off
14:36the kitchen
14:36counter.
14:41We did
14:42search the
14:43front door
14:44to see
14:45any type
14:45of jarring
14:46or kick
14:47marks
14:48or pry
14:49marks
14:49or anything
14:50and none
14:51were located.
14:52They start
14:53wondering
14:53how did he
14:55get in?
14:56Did someone
14:56leave a door
14:57unlocked?
15:01Police
15:02canvassed
15:02the apartment
15:03complex
15:03but none
15:04of the
15:04neighbors
15:05they speak
15:05to saw
15:06what happened.
15:07That leaves
15:08one person
15:09who might
15:10be able
15:10to identify
15:11the killer
15:11and she's
15:13in the
15:13hospital.
15:15Police
15:15now find
15:16that
15:16Komethia's
15:17wounds
15:18are not
15:18life-threatening
15:19so they
15:20are able
15:21to talk
15:22with her.
15:23Komethia
15:24was brought
15:25to the
15:26violent crimes
15:26office there
15:27at the
15:27Shreveport
15:28Police Department
15:28roughly around
15:307 a.m.
15:33Obviously
15:34we all know
15:35while we're
15:35here
15:36we're
15:38investigating
15:39the
15:40stabbing
15:41of
15:41Brian.
15:43Is he
15:43okay?
15:45We'll discuss
15:45all that
15:46when you
15:47talk to us.
15:48Is Brian
15:48okay?
15:50I thought
15:50it was my
15:51mom.
15:52He's dead.
15:54This
15:55ass
15:57followed
15:57me.
15:58This
16:03Komethia
16:03tells police
16:04that she
16:05was out
16:06on the
16:06town.
16:07It was a
16:08girls'
16:08night out.
16:09They went
16:10to a couple
16:11of different
16:11establishments,
16:12had a few
16:12drinks,
16:13and then they
16:14ended up
16:14at Gigi's.
16:16Gigi's is
16:17one of the
16:17larger clubs
16:18in downtown
16:19Shreveport.
16:20Not long
16:21after they
16:22got to Gigi's,
16:23they saw
16:23Brian.
16:25Tell me
16:26about that.
16:26We talked
16:27and we
16:27were,
16:28he got
16:29upset and
16:30he left.
16:32Komethia
16:33advised us
16:34that whenever
16:35her and
16:35Brian went
16:36out separately,
16:37that they
16:38weren't supposed
16:38to meet up
16:39at the same
16:39club or go
16:40to the same
16:40places.
16:42They had an
16:43agreement that
16:44if one comes
16:44to the club,
16:45the other
16:46one has to
16:46leave.
16:47So,
16:48Brian leaves.
16:50She said
16:51that she
16:51decided to
16:52go back
16:53to Brian's
16:54apartment
16:54to make
16:55sure that
16:56everything
16:56was cool.
16:58Komethia
16:58advised us
16:59that her
17:00and Brian
17:00were back
17:00at his
17:01apartment.
17:02They were
17:02kind of
17:03talking.
17:20She said
17:21she tried
17:21to jump
17:21on him
17:22and he
17:23pushed
17:23her back.
17:25After he
17:26finished
17:26stabbing
17:26Brian,
17:27he just
17:28gets up
17:28and runs
17:29off.
17:31You keep
17:32saying
17:32ass
17:32who is
17:33the
17:34ass
17:34doing?
17:37Komethia
17:38explains that
17:39John was a
17:39man she dated
17:40casually in
17:41the past
17:42and he
17:42seemed to
17:43have gotten
17:43the wrong
17:44idea.
17:46I mean,
17:47I told him
17:47there would
17:47never be
17:48anything
17:48because I
17:49was with
17:49here.
17:50I was
17:50crying.
17:53after a couple
17:54of months
17:54he got the
17:56picture,
17:56but then he
17:57showed back
17:57up.
17:58He would pop
17:58up like
17:58in crazy
17:59places.
18:04Komethia stated
18:04she saw him
18:05at the
18:05library.
18:06She also
18:07saw him
18:07near her
18:08apartment
18:08and later
18:10saw him
18:10at the
18:10club with
18:11her
18:11friends.
18:15despite the
18:16alarming
18:16run-ins
18:17with this
18:17man over
18:18the past
18:18month,
18:19Komethia
18:20seemed
18:20strangely
18:21unable to
18:21provide
18:22investigators
18:23with any
18:23details.
18:25She could
18:26never tell
18:27us a
18:27phone number
18:28or she
18:29couldn't even
18:29tell us his
18:30last name.
18:31She stated
18:32that he
18:32drives
18:32different
18:33cars and
18:34he would
18:34call her
18:35from
18:35different
18:36pay
18:36phones.
18:37The fact
18:38that she
18:39can't give
18:40us specific
18:41information
18:41about this
18:42John had
18:43us starting
18:43to question
18:45exactly what
18:46she was
18:46telling us.
18:51Police
18:52realized that
18:53she could
18:53still be in
18:54shock.
18:56So they
18:57decided to
18:58go to the
18:58cell phones.
19:00They asked
19:01Komethia for
19:02permission to
19:03go through
19:03her cell
19:04phone.
19:06There are
19:06three voicemails
19:07on her
19:08phone.
19:08Two of
19:08them are
19:09from friends
19:09talking about
19:10going out
19:10that night
19:11and making
19:11plans for
19:12the night.
19:12And then
19:12that third
19:13voicemail
19:13is from
19:14Brian.
19:15He left
19:16the voicemail
19:17in between
19:17the time
19:17he left
19:18the club
19:18and the
19:19time that
19:19she arrived
19:20at his
19:20apartment.
19:23He advised
19:24that he was
19:25done.
19:26He was
19:26breaking up
19:27with her.
19:30Prior
19:31to us
19:31hearing that,
19:33it appeared
19:34that her
19:34and Brian's
19:35relationship
19:36was fine.
19:39As the
19:40detectives
19:41confront her
19:42with this
19:42voicemail,
19:44she changes.
19:48Her demeanor
19:50changes.
19:51Thank you.
19:53Why did he
19:54break up
19:54with you,
19:56He didn't
19:57break up
19:58with you
19:58tonight.
19:59We always
20:00go through
20:01this.
20:01It's not a
20:02big deal.
20:03I also
20:03just left
20:04him at the
20:04ward.
20:06So yeah,
20:07it's a big
20:08deal.
20:09It's a very
20:09big deal.
20:16It's a very big deal.
20:27four hours
20:29after Brian Spinks
20:30was found
20:31stabbed to death
20:32in his apartment.
20:33Investigators
20:34have just heard
20:35a voicemail
20:36from that same
20:37night in which
20:38he broke up
20:38with his
20:39girlfriend,
20:40Kimethea Coleman.
20:43The new
20:43information
20:44has them
20:45questioning
20:45if her
20:46story of
20:47a violent
20:47home invasion
20:48by a
20:49jealous
20:49stalker
20:50is true.
20:53At that
20:53point,
20:54she asks
20:55to speak
20:55to Detective
20:56Farquhar
20:56alone.
20:58They had
20:58developed a
20:59bit of a
20:59rapport,
20:59and she
21:01trusted him
21:03in a way
21:03that she
21:04hadn't
21:04developed
21:04trust with
21:05the other
21:05detectives.
21:07We step
21:08outside
21:09into a
21:10little room
21:10to where
21:11we could
21:11still watch
21:12Kimethea
21:13and Detective
21:14Farquhar
21:14in their
21:15interview,
21:15but Kimethea
21:16can't see
21:17us.
21:18I was
21:19hoping that
21:20she would
21:20finally confide
21:21to me
21:22exactly what
21:23happened.
21:37At that
21:38point,
21:39she started
21:39telling me
21:40that Brian
21:41had in
21:42the past
21:43as well
21:43as that
21:44night
21:44has hit
21:45her
21:45and abused
21:47her,
21:47but she
21:48felt that
21:49she deserved
21:49it,
21:50and so she
21:50didn't say
21:51anything to
21:51anyone.
21:53Kimethea
21:53stated that
21:54they argued
21:55in Brian's
21:55apartment
21:57that he'd
21:58been drinking,
21:59he was
21:59drunk,
22:00and she
22:01stated that
22:02he grabbed
22:02her by
22:02the hand,
22:04causing a
22:04minor bruise,
22:05and then
22:06Brian grabbed
22:07her throat
22:08strangling
22:09her.
22:10She said
22:11she pushed
22:11him off,
22:12and that's
22:13when he went
22:13into the
22:14kitchen and
22:15got a knife.
22:17I know if it's
22:18harder.
22:20You gotta tell me
22:21that he comes back
22:21from the kitchen.
22:26According to
22:26Kimethea,
22:28he begins to
22:28stab her
22:29about the
22:29legs and
22:31stomach area.
22:36She said
22:37she had to
22:38do something
22:38in order to
22:39defend herself
22:40in that
22:41moment.
22:42So she,
22:43at that point,
22:44got up,
22:44went into
22:45the kitchen,
22:46got her
22:46own knife.
22:48And I
22:48just,
22:49I was like,
22:49I don't
22:50can help
22:50me,
22:50I'll
22:50heal me.
23:00So you
23:01just kept
23:01standing?
23:03When did
23:04the stroke
23:04be cut?
23:07Because it
23:07was kind
23:08of bad.
23:09Sean did?
23:15Was he
23:15in the
23:15apartment
23:16when all
23:16this happened?
23:18He
23:19called me,
23:20and I
23:21was like,
23:21I'll be,
23:21out of the
23:22what are you
23:23doing here?
23:25She's changing
23:26the story now.
23:30It has now
23:31gone from
23:32John breaking
23:33into the apartment
23:34and attacking
23:35Brian,
23:36to John walking
23:39into the apartment
23:40as she and
23:41Brian were
23:41fighting.
23:43It kind of
23:44confused
23:44her story.
23:45the fact
23:46the fact
23:46that she
23:46brought
23:47John back
23:48in did
23:48not make
23:49sense to
23:49me.
23:50So he
23:51showed up
23:51in the
23:51middle of
23:52y'all fighting?
23:53And what
23:54all did he
23:54do?
23:55He got
23:56the
23:56lot of
23:56things
23:57just the way
23:57of jamming
23:58with.
23:58I guess he
23:58was trying to
23:59think of what I
24:00did.
24:01It made
24:02no sense
24:03to anyone
24:04in that room.
24:04Like,
24:05the math
24:05just was not
24:06mathing.
24:07At this point,
24:08detectives are
24:09starting to believe
24:10that John
24:11really didn't
24:12exist.
24:18The question
24:18that the
24:19detectives asked
24:19was,
24:20why didn't
24:20you just
24:20leave?
24:21You're being
24:22attacked.
24:23You're able
24:24to get away.
24:25But instead
24:25of leaving,
24:26you grab a
24:27weapon and
24:28you come back
24:28to the fight.
24:30I was trying
24:32to talk to
24:33him,
24:33tell him,
24:34calm down.
24:34I'm like,
24:35okay,
24:35are you really
24:35going to do
24:36this right now?
24:38At that
24:38point,
24:39I advised
24:40Detective Holmes
24:41and Agent
24:42Dunkel to
24:42come back
24:43in.
24:43I asked
24:44Komethea to
24:45repeat what
24:47she had told
24:47me to them.
24:48At that
24:49point,
24:50she advised
24:50for an
24:50attorney.
24:51So the
24:52interview
24:53was concluded.
24:57Since
24:58it appears
24:59the stabbing
25:00was a crime
25:00of passion,
25:01police charge
25:02Komethea
25:03Coleman
25:03with manslaughter.
25:05Under
25:06Louisiana
25:06state law,
25:07they have
25:0872 hours
25:09to gather
25:09any additional
25:10evidence.
25:12Within the
25:1372-hour
25:14period,
25:14a detective
25:15would gather
25:16all the
25:17pertinent
25:17information
25:18to corroborate
25:19the charge
25:21or upgrade
25:22it to
25:23second-degree
25:23murder.
25:25And with
25:25that being
25:26said,
25:26they would
25:26gather more
25:27evidence,
25:28talk to
25:28more witnesses,
25:30talking to
25:31anybody that
25:32knew her
25:34or Brian
25:35Spinks
25:35and their
25:36relationship.
25:40coming up,
25:41witnesses
25:42provide
25:43troubling
25:43new details
25:44about events
25:45leading up
25:46to the
25:46murder.
25:47She
25:48threatened
25:48to beat
25:49his ass
25:50there at
25:51the club.
25:52And
25:52medical
25:52analysis
25:53casts doubt
25:54on
25:55Komethia's
25:55story.
25:56The coroner
25:57identified
25:5864
25:59stabbed
26:00wounds.
26:01It's hard
26:02for me to
26:02fathom this
26:03incident being
26:04self-defense.
26:20It's been
26:21nearly 12
26:22hours since
26:23Brian Spinks
26:24murder and
26:25loved ones
26:26have started
26:26to learn
26:27the tragic
26:28news.
26:30I just
26:30had
26:31randomly
26:32come in
26:32to my
26:33mom's
26:33house
26:35and
26:36she
26:37hung
26:37up
26:37the
26:37phone
26:37and
26:37she
26:38screamed
26:38my
26:38name
26:39and
26:40it
26:40was
26:40just
26:40something
26:40about
26:41the
26:41way
26:42she
26:42screamed
26:42it
26:44and
26:45she
26:45told me
26:45the news
26:46that
26:46Brian
26:47was
26:47killed
26:48just
26:49in
26:50the
26:50shot.
26:54With
26:55Komethea
26:56Coleman
26:56in custody
26:57detectives
26:58turn their
26:58attention
26:59to locating
27:00the alleged
27:00stalker
27:01she continues
27:02to claim
27:03murdered
27:03her
27:03boyfriend.
27:05Now that
27:06Komethea's
27:07story is
27:08not making
27:08much sense
27:09it's very
27:10important for
27:11police to
27:12rule out
27:13the John
27:14theory.
27:19Police did
27:20locate
27:21a person
27:22that
27:22fit
27:23John's
27:24description.
27:26He said
27:27he didn't
27:27know
27:28Komethea
27:28and he
27:29didn't
27:29know
27:30Brian.
27:31They
27:32weren't
27:32able to
27:33find
27:33any
27:34type
27:34of
27:35evidence
27:36on him
27:37no
27:37blood
27:38no
27:39knife
27:39wounds.
27:41With
27:41the
27:41suspect
27:42having
27:42to be
27:42so
27:43close
27:43to
27:43the
27:44victim
27:44it
27:44would
27:45have
27:45been
27:45nearly
27:45impossible
27:46for
27:46the
27:47person
27:47to
27:47not
27:48have
27:48some
27:49kind
27:49of
27:49evidence
27:49transfer
27:50from
27:50the
27:50victim
27:51to
27:51their
27:51person.
27:53Blood
27:54is very
27:54slippery
27:54and when
27:56someone
27:56is
27:57stabbing
27:58someone
27:58generally
27:58the
27:59knife
27:59will
28:00slip
28:01and they
28:02will
28:02cut
28:02themselves
28:03during
28:03the
28:04events.
28:04This
28:05gentleman
28:05that was
28:06stopped
28:06had no
28:06injuries
28:07whatsoever
28:07on
28:08him.
28:08It
28:09was
28:09very
28:09clear
28:09this
28:10is
28:10not
28:10John.
28:14Not
28:15only
28:15are
28:15investigators
28:16unable
28:16to
28:17find
28:17John,
28:18there
28:19is
28:19no
28:19evidence
28:19he
28:20exists
28:20at
28:21all.
28:23Surveillance
28:24cameras
28:24were
28:25captured
28:25from
28:26Gigi's.
28:27There
28:27was no
28:28black male
28:28with dreadlocks
28:29with a
28:29red
28:30shirt
28:30that
28:30was
28:31walking
28:31around
28:32Gigi's
28:33stalking
28:33her.
28:35We
28:35were
28:36unable
28:36to
28:36locate
28:37any
28:37witnesses
28:38that
28:38saw
28:38this
28:39guy
28:39John
28:39or
28:40any
28:41video
28:41to
28:42corroborate
28:43Komethia's
28:44statement
28:44that she
28:45saw him
28:45at the
28:46club
28:46or that
28:47she saw
28:47him
28:48at the
28:48library.
28:49It
28:49became
28:50apparent
28:50to
28:50police
28:51that
28:51Komethia
28:52had
28:53literally
28:53sent
28:54them
28:54on a
28:55goose
28:55chase
28:56to
28:56find
28:57another
28:57suspect.
28:58that
28:59was
29:00non-existent.
29:04The
29:05discovery
29:05means
29:06there
29:06were
29:06only
29:07two
29:07people
29:07in
29:08the
29:08apartment
29:08when
29:09the
29:09stabbing
29:09occurred,
29:10Brian
29:11and
29:11Komethia.
29:13She
29:14stabbed
29:14him
29:14in a
29:15rage.
29:17There
29:18was no
29:18John
29:19in the
29:19picture
29:20whatsoever.
29:21But
29:22it
29:22is
29:23better
29:23for
29:23detectives
29:24to
29:25still
29:25go
29:26a
29:26little
29:26bit
29:26further
29:27to
29:28get
29:28more
29:28evidence.
29:29Talk
29:30to
29:30her
29:30family,
29:31talk
29:31to
29:31friends.
29:32I
29:33did
29:33receive
29:34a
29:34phone
29:34call
29:35from
29:35Brian's
29:35father
29:36and
29:36he
29:37advised
29:37that
29:38Brian
29:39within
29:39the
29:39past
29:39couple
29:39of
29:40weeks
29:40was
29:40getting
29:41ready
29:41to
29:41part
29:43ways
29:43with
29:43Komethia.
29:45His
29:46description
29:46to me
29:46was,
29:47Dad,
29:47I'm
29:47being
29:48smothered.
29:49He
29:50told me
29:50he
29:51wasn't
29:51seeing
29:51any
29:51other
29:52girls,
29:52just
29:53her,
29:53but
29:54she
29:54was
29:54smothering
29:55him and
29:57he needed
29:58some time
29:58to wait.
30:03She had
30:03been pressuring
30:04him about
30:05marriage and
30:07he didn't feel
30:07like he was
30:08ready for
30:08that.
30:09She was
30:10getting up at
30:10night,
30:10going in
30:11his phone,
30:12going in
30:12his emails,
30:14searching the
30:14house,
30:15going through
30:15the drawers,
30:16looking for
30:16some type of
30:17incriminating
30:17evidence that
30:18he's dating
30:19another girl.
30:20It
30:21progressively
30:22got worse,
30:23the
30:24jealousness
30:24and the
30:25insecurities.
30:29Brian's
30:30loved
30:30ones say
30:31the
30:31tension
30:32between
30:32him
30:33and
30:33Komethia
30:34finally
30:34reached
30:35a
30:35breaking
30:35point
30:36on the
30:36night
30:36of
30:37January
30:3717th.
30:39Air
30:39Force
30:39OSI
30:40detectives
30:41interviewed
30:42the
30:42Brian
30:43Spinks
30:43friends
30:44who went
30:45out with
30:45him that
30:46night.
30:46They
30:47state
30:47that
30:48Brian
30:48was at
30:49Gigi's
30:49dancing
30:50with a
30:51friend,
30:51but not
30:52intimately
30:53or anything
30:54of that
30:54nature,
30:54just a
30:55friendly
30:56dance
30:56with
30:56another
30:57female.
30:58Komethia
30:59sees
30:59Brian
31:00dancing
31:00with
31:00this
31:00female.
31:02She
31:03gets
31:03enraged
31:05and
31:06figures
31:07this must
31:08be a
31:08side piece
31:10and they
31:11argue.
31:14She
31:15threatened
31:16to beat
31:17his ass.
31:17there at
31:18the
31:18club
31:19for
31:19dancing
31:19with
31:19someone
31:20else.
31:21night
31:22I
31:23saw
31:24a
31:24different
31:24side
31:25of
31:25Kim
31:25that
31:25I
31:25had
31:26never
31:26seen
31:26before.
31:27I
31:27had
31:27never
31:27seen
31:28her
31:28react
31:28this
31:28way.
31:31Eventually
31:31cooler heads
31:32prevailed
31:33and we
31:34sat down
31:34with
31:34Kim.
31:36She
31:36said to
31:36me,
31:37she was
31:37like,
31:37Shane,
31:38I'm
31:39sorry,
31:40I love
31:40him,
31:41and I
31:43overreacted.
31:43So in
31:44my mind,
31:45the night
31:45was over
31:46and everything
31:46was fine.
31:48I
31:49had no
31:49idea what
31:51happened after
31:51that until
31:52the next
31:52morning.
31:54Through all
31:55the interviews
31:56that we
31:56did,
31:57we feel
31:57that
31:58Kameetha
31:59was jealous
31:59and that
32:00when Brian
32:01tried to
32:02break it
32:02off with
32:03her,
32:04that it
32:04just made
32:05her lose
32:06her mind.
32:07And that
32:08if she
32:09couldn't have
32:09him,
32:10no one
32:11could.
32:26police in
32:27Shreveport,
32:28Louisiana,
32:29have
32:29arrested
32:30Kameetha
32:30Coleman
32:31for
32:31stabbing
32:32her
32:32boyfriend
32:32Brian
32:33Spinks
32:34to death.
32:35But
32:36Kameetha
32:37insists she
32:38was acting
32:38in self-defense.
32:40Being that there
32:41was accusation
32:42of abuse,
32:43we pulled up
32:44any type
32:44of police
32:45records.
32:45But there
32:46were no
32:46records between
32:47Brian Spinks
32:48or Kameetha.
32:52Investigators
32:53looked to
32:54Brian's autopsy
32:55to provide
32:56definitive
32:56answers.
32:58Once the
32:59coroner got
32:59him down
33:00to the
33:00morgue
33:01and they
33:01conducted
33:01the autopsy,
33:02they identified
33:0464 stab
33:05wounds.
33:07When
33:08somebody's
33:08trying to
33:09defend
33:09themselves
33:09from an
33:10attacker,
33:11they are
33:11trying to
33:12de-escalate
33:13the situation,
33:15trying to
33:15put a little
33:16distance between
33:16them and
33:17their attacker
33:17just to
33:18stop the
33:19incident from
33:21occurring.
33:22It's hard
33:23for me to
33:23fathom this
33:24incident being
33:25self-defense.
33:28Detectives
33:29are left
33:30with how
33:31is it that
33:32this 100-pound
33:33female was
33:35able to
33:35overtake
33:36this 5'11
33:38muscle-bound
33:39male who's
33:40in the
33:41military.
33:45When we
33:46got the
33:46autopsy report
33:47back, it
33:48showed that
33:49his blood
33:49alcohol level
33:50was over
33:52twice the
33:52legal limit
33:54and that
33:55he probably
33:56would not
33:57have been
33:57able to
33:58fight back.
34:01Her
34:01entire
34:02defense on
34:03the self-defense
34:05side was
34:05he attacked
34:06me.
34:07There was
34:08no way
34:08that Brian
34:09with the
34:10.174
34:11blood alcohol
34:12content
34:13attacked her,
34:15walked to
34:16the kitchen,
34:16came back
34:17and stabbed
34:18her.
34:24Camithia's
34:25own injuries
34:26also seemed
34:27to contradict
34:27her story.
34:29She first
34:30claimed that
34:31John had
34:32stabbed her
34:32and then she
34:33claimed that
34:34Brian had
34:35stabbed her
34:36during their
34:37fight in
34:38which she was
34:39defending herself.
34:41But the
34:42Caddo Parish
34:43coroner said
34:44that they were
34:44not penetrating,
34:46that they were
34:47superficial wounds
34:49which would
34:49leave him to
34:50believe that
34:51they were
34:51self-inflicted.
34:54Maybe the
34:55murder was not
34:55premeditated but
34:57she went to
34:57extreme lengths
34:58to create
35:00evidence, to
35:02create the
35:02optics that
35:03would support
35:03her story.
35:05She was
35:06desperate to
35:07stay out of
35:07trouble so much
35:08so that she
35:08harmed herself.
35:14On January
35:1619th, 2010,
35:18less than 72
35:19hours after
35:20Brian's murder,
35:21prosecutors
35:22upgrade
35:23Camithia's
35:23charges from
35:24manslaughter
35:25to second-degree
35:26murder.
35:28Second-degree
35:29murder is the
35:30intentional
35:31killing of
35:32another person
35:33whereas manslaughter
35:35is killing
35:37someone in the
35:37heat of the
35:38moment.
35:39the fact
35:40that she
35:41did 64
35:42stab wounds
35:44to him
35:44as well as
35:45a severe
35:46laceration to
35:47his throat
35:48was more
35:48indicative that
35:49she meant
35:50to kill him.
35:52The behavior
35:53they said she
35:54displayed
35:55wasn't the
35:56Kim I know,
35:57wasn't the
35:58Kim I've
35:59talked to.
36:00I couldn't
36:01believe the
36:02viciousness.
36:05A trial date
36:07is set,
36:07but as her
36:08day in court
36:09approaches,
36:10Camithia's
36:10attorneys introduce
36:11a new strategy
36:13for her defense.
36:15She pleaded
36:16not guilty
36:16by reason
36:17of insanity.
36:18There were
36:19motions filed,
36:21there was a
36:21mental evaluation
36:22conducted,
36:23and she was
36:24deemed
36:24incompetent
36:25to stand
36:26trial.
36:27She was
36:28transferred
36:28to a
36:30mental health
36:31facility
36:31for 90
36:32days.
36:32At the end
36:33of that 90
36:34days,
36:35she had a
36:35second evaluation.
36:37November 2011,
36:39it was determined
36:39that Camithia
36:40Coleman
36:40was able
36:42to stand
36:42trial and
36:43testify.
36:48On April
36:4923rd,
36:502012,
36:51Camithia
36:52Coleman's
36:52murder trial
36:53begins.
36:55Despite the
36:56results of her
36:56psychiatric
36:57evaluation,
36:58her defense
36:59remains the
37:00same.
37:02Battered
37:02wife syndrome
37:03was one of
37:04the elements
37:06of her
37:06insanity
37:06defense,
37:08that she
37:10was beaten
37:11enough and
37:12that she was
37:12abused and
37:13endured so
37:13much abuse
37:14that one
37:14day she
37:15just couldn't
37:15take anymore
37:16and she
37:16fought back.
37:18The defense
37:19tried to
37:19paint Brian
37:20as an
37:21abusive
37:21person and
37:23tried to
37:23claim that
37:24he had
37:24PTSD because
37:25he had
37:26served in
37:26the Middle
37:27East and
37:28that he
37:28came back
37:29and took
37:29all of
37:30that out
37:30on
37:30Camithia.
37:33For
37:33prosecutors,
37:34the question
37:35is whether
37:36the jury
37:37will believe
37:38it.
37:38Only two
37:39people know
37:40what really
37:40occurred during
37:41the relationship
37:42and one of
37:42them is no
37:43longer here
37:43to tell
37:43their story.
38:05At her murder
38:06trial,
38:07Camithia Coleman
38:08claims the abuse
38:10she suffered at the
38:11hands of her boyfriend,
38:12Brian Spinks,
38:13drove her to commit
38:14a desperate act
38:15of self-preservation.
38:17Police and prosecutors
38:19say otherwise.
38:21Throughout the
38:22investigation and
38:23throughout the
38:24preparation for the
38:25trial, there was
38:26just no evidence
38:27that pointed to
38:29Brian being an
38:30abusive person.
38:33She was saying
38:34that he beat
38:35on women
38:36and he beat
38:37on me.
38:38Brian
38:38wouldn't
38:38hit the
38:39fly.
38:41Camithia Coleman
38:43is a
38:45disturbed
38:46female
38:47who
38:48could not
38:49take no
38:49from her
38:50boyfriend
38:50who did
38:51not want
38:52to be
38:52with her
38:52anymore.
38:53That's
38:53what made
38:54her snap.
39:01Prosecutors
39:02present
39:02Camithia's
39:03911 call
39:04as definitive
39:05proof her
39:06actions were
39:07premeditated.
39:09I went
39:10back and
39:10listened to
39:11that phone
39:12call.
39:12You can
39:13hear Brian
39:13in the
39:14background.
39:19She gets
39:20real loud
39:20and kind
39:20of screams
39:21and if you
39:22listen closely
39:23you can
39:23hear Brian
39:24start to
39:24gurgle.
39:31Okay,
39:32what's going
39:32on there?
39:36I think
39:37that is
39:37when she
39:38delivered
39:38the final
39:39blow.
39:40While she
39:41was on the
39:41phone with
39:41another one.
39:50Hearing
39:50his voice
39:51one last
39:52time,
39:52crying for
39:53help
39:55was
39:59truly
40:01gun
40:01rich
40:01in.
40:04I can't
40:05imagine a
40:06human being
40:06doing what
40:07she did
40:07to somebody.
40:10What she
40:10did was
40:16Amanda
40:16deserved
40:17leave like
40:17that.
40:27who would
40:28have thought
40:29a sweet
40:30young lady
40:31with a future
40:32a loving
40:32family
40:33who would
40:34believe she
40:35would do
40:35such a
40:35horrendous
40:36crime?
40:37I just
40:38couldn't
40:38believe it
40:39and she
40:40turned into
40:41another
40:41person
40:41that night
40:43as if she
40:44was possessed.
40:49the jury
40:50in this
40:50trial
40:51deliberated
40:51two hours
40:52and they
40:53came back
40:54with a
40:54unanimous
40:55guilty as
40:57charged
40:57verdict of
40:58second
40:58degree murder.
41:02Comethia Coleman
41:03is sentenced
41:04to life
41:05in prison
41:06without the
41:07possibility
41:07of parole.
41:09she will
41:10not spend
41:11another day
41:11in freedom
41:12she'll be
41:13locked up
41:14but that
41:15still doesn't
41:15help his
41:16friends and
41:17family.
41:24We was
41:25trying to
41:25plan
41:25Imani
41:25a big
41:26surprise
41:26birthday
41:27party
41:27because it
41:28was going
41:28to be
41:28the first
41:28time
41:29Brian was
41:29in the
41:30U.S.
41:31when his
41:31birthday
41:32hit.
41:33She took
41:33that from
41:34me.
41:35Man,
41:35that was
41:35supposed to
41:36be my
41:36guide through
41:37life.
41:37You know,
41:38like,
41:39she took
41:40that.
41:41I can't
41:41get that
41:42back.
41:44I believe
41:45Brian would
41:45be extremely
41:46proud of
41:46his son,
41:47of the
41:48man that
41:48he has
41:48become.
41:50I wasn't
41:51completely
41:51stripped
41:52because I
41:53got a
41:53grandson
41:53that reminds
41:55me of
41:55every time
41:55I look
