00:00Here's game one of the 2026 season, but first, let's check in with Mariluz Good.
00:05Fernando, you've played in quite a few of these now.
00:07What stands out to you about opening day?
00:09It's so amazing.
00:10The beautiful weather in San Diego, beautiful crowd, the flyover, it's always special.
00:14When you think about all the different elements that opening day contains,
00:17what is the thing that you most look forward to?
00:19It's the assignment and getting another baseball season going,
00:23and it's always a beautiful day when you're in a baseball field.
00:25When you think about these 2026 Padres, what is a word that comes to mind for you?
00:29Man, the vibe goes through the roof.
00:31We have a great team over here, and we're just going to find a way how to make it happen.
00:35You mentioned San Diego, the beautiful weather, the flyover, but the fans.
00:39I know that you love them, too.
00:40How excited are you to reconnect with those fans that are out there cheering you on in right field?
00:44It's always special.
00:45It's always special to be playing in front of them.
00:47I love to play in front of them, and we've got nine more years, I guess so,
00:51probably a little bit more doing it.
00:53So, you know, a day at a time, but I'm going to enjoy it, that's for sure.
00:56Well, Fernando, I know that they're excited to see you out there.
00:58Enjoy, good luck, have a great season.
01:00Thank you, I appreciate it.
01:02Back to you guys.
01:03All right, Mary Lou, thanks very much.
01:05He'll be taking right field here very shortly.
01:09And reacquainting himself with the faithful.
01:12What is just a spectacular day here today.
01:15Chamber of Commerce Day, downtown Donnie.
01:18The fans are excited.
01:19There's electricity in the air.
01:20The anticipation of opening day, Craig Stammen era starts in about five minutes.
01:25The bell is about to ring at Major League Baseball 2026 here in San Diego.
01:30And this is the day where the numbers go on the back of your baseball card for real.
01:35It all counts now.
01:37There goes Nando.
01:57Opening day 2026 from Petco Park in San Diego.
02:03I don't care if you're a first-year rookie making your debut or a 15-year veteran,
02:09the adrenaline is definitely pumping this afternoon.
02:11AJ Hinch is here.
02:12We check out his starting nine today.
02:14Kerry Carpenter leading it off in right field.
02:17Labor Torres at second base with Colt Keith.
02:20The DH Riley Green in left field with Spencer Torkelson at first base.
02:25Kevin McGonigal makes his Major League debut.
02:27He's the third baseman for the Tigers.
02:29Dylan Dingler does the catching with Parker Meadows in center.
02:33And Javier Baez, the veteran, is it short anti-bats night for the Tigers.
02:41On the mound for your Padres getting his first opening day start is Nick Pavetta.
02:45So it must be win day because look at these season numbers last year.
02:4931 starts, career highs in 2025.
02:5213, as I mentioned, 2.87 ERA.
02:54The innings, almost 200, and the strikeouts certainly there.
02:57Very few walks for Nick Pavetta.
02:59He had one heck of a campaign last year.
03:04Let's take a look at StatCast 3D powered by Google Cloud.
03:07And the arsenal for Nick Pavetta.
03:09The success last year.
03:10Look, a lot of north to south.
03:12Four-seamer curveball sweeper.
03:13He'll mix in the cutter, sinker, and slider maybe the second or third time around.
03:16But when he is on his game, he is dominant.
03:19Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we're ready for big league baseball here in 2026.
03:23Coming to you from the corner of Tony and Trevor, downtown San Diego.
03:26It's opening week.
03:28Stepping up to the plate for the Tigers.
03:30Kerry Carpenter stepping up to the mic.
03:32With the play-by-play is the voice of the San Diego Padres.
03:43Don Arcello.
03:45Donnie, take it away.
03:45Thanks very much, Budley.
03:46Here we go.
03:47The 2026 season is on.
03:54Kerry Carpenter stands in on the left side.
03:57Nick Pavetta ready to work.
04:00First pitch of 2026.
04:04Grounded foul, we're underway.
04:08Not a cloud in the sky.
04:10Petco Park.
04:12It's the best place to play in Major League Baseball.
04:15The visiting teams love it.
04:19Fans from out of town love it.
04:23Spreeze it fouled down the right field line.
04:26And it's 0 and 2.
04:29We both enjoyed as did the faithful last season for Nick Pavetta, first year in a Padres uniform.
04:3631 total starts and he was great.
04:39He was the best.
04:40He was the ace of the Padres in 2025.
04:42A guy who could stop a slump, right?
04:44Or a losing streak.
04:45That was what Nick Pavetta provided last year.
04:50He was fun to watch.
04:54Run around, I believe, gets away briefly from Fermin.
04:57He fires down to first for the out.
04:59A strikeout for Pavetta.
05:01Put out goes 2-3.
05:05We saw a lot of that last year.
05:07Now we saw some fastballs right there.
05:09We saw the Yacker very, very tough to lay off.
05:12It's got that north and south action to it.
05:14And for Carpenter, oh yeah, he's back to the,
05:17back to the drawing board for the Carpenter.
05:19On that swing and miss.
05:22One down here in the first for Glaber-Torres.
05:28Takes the strike and there's that signature curveball.
05:33If he can land that early and then expand the zone late,
05:35that's when you get a lot of swing and misses out of the zone.
05:44He's got a lot of swing and misses out of the game.
05:4513 wins last year for Pavetta and his 31 starts the ERA under three.
05:59Another thing we look at for Nick Pavetta is quality, right?
06:02The quality of the starts.
06:03And there are numbers that equate to a quality stuff.
06:06But for Nick last year, 19 out of 31.
06:08All right, that's, that's pretty darn good.
06:12More than half for the right-hander.
06:14Very dependable.
06:15Yep.
06:15All year.
06:18Oh, I was thinking maybe, uh, gonna tap the helmet right there.
06:22But, uh, it's early.
06:23Very early.
06:24Yeah.
06:25There's gonna be times, I think, to where you're gonna see guys like,
06:28should I, should I, shouldn't I, right?
06:30Pick your spots.
06:32There's time out here for Torres who backs out.
06:36Torres broke in with the Yankees back in 2018.
06:40He's a Yankee through 2023.
06:44And now a member of the Tigers.
06:46And now a couple of years.
06:49Spins out of the way.
06:50A ball for.
06:52And one-out walk for Glaber Torres.
06:58Check out the Padres defensively.
07:01Left to right across the outfield.
07:03Oriano, Merrill, and Tatis Jr.
07:05Third to first.
07:07Machado, Bogerts, Cronenworth, and Sheets.
07:09With Vermein doing the catching for Pavetta.
07:14One-out, one-on.
07:15Colt Keith.
07:18In the air to shallow left.
07:19Oriano coming in.
07:20Full bore.
07:21He will dive and not get it.
07:23Knocked it down.
07:25And up to second base goes Torres on a bloop single for Colt Keith.
07:30The main thing there is for Ramon to keep that ball in front of him,
07:34which he did.
07:34And for the base runners, Torres, he had to hold up.
07:37It's kind of like in between.
07:39One of those tweeners down the left field line.
07:41If he catches it, you have to retreat back.
07:42But once that ball touches grass, he is off and running.
07:46Being a forced play at second base.
07:48But no chance of getting him on the force.
07:50There he is.
07:51Little pause.
07:52Should I stay?
07:52Should I go?
07:53He goes.
07:54Up 90 feet.
07:56First and second.
07:57One down here in the first inning for Riley Green.
08:01At 36 home runs a year ago.
08:05111 RBIs.
08:07And the cleanup hitter for the Tigers.
08:11Look at his numbers from last year.
08:13The batting average only at 258.
08:15But the power number is terrific.
08:20Tigers can put a hurtin' on you.
08:21Last year, they had quite a lead.
08:24We can get into that over the course of this series.
08:26But 15 and a half games ahead of Cleveland.
08:28And then it came down the last day of the season.
08:30But A.J. Hitch really likes his young lineup.
08:32He's got some homegrown Tigers in this lineup.
08:35Which is a good sign for Detroit.
08:39There's a good sign.
08:41That good curveball.
08:42Yeah, he's got the feel for that.
08:44Get up top, spin it, and let her rip.
08:47Right over the top.
08:48That's a dandy.
08:48That's really, really nice.
08:51He can spin it as he bounced one right here.
08:57Oh, going upstairs upstairs, upstairs, downstairs for Nick Coveta.
09:02It's a good combo.
09:08Still behind here.
09:09Three and one to Riley Green with Torres at second.
09:12Keith at first, one away.
09:16Strike two.
09:20There's that cut fastball we were talking about when we were talking about the arsenal for Nick.
09:25You know, he'll mix it in every once in a while.
09:26You throw a lot of four-seamers on the curveballs.
09:29Maybe some hitters.
09:29This part of the lineup will recognize him.
09:31So, hey, mixing a little something different.
09:33Give him a different look.
09:39That's ball four.
09:40Second walk of this first inning allowed by Pavetta.
09:43And it loads the bases.
09:47When Padres pitchers canine, you win, scored 25% off your total purchase.
09:52That participating PECO locations tomorrow.
09:54With your loyalty membership, this has to redeem the Padres canine promotion at checkout.
09:59Ruben Neabla's first visit of the season.
10:04This is something that Ruben Neabla does really well at as far as picking his spots.
10:10And, uh, I think if you talk to Nick Pavetta, the last thing he wants is a visit.
10:14But there are times when you've got to go out there and either just have a little calm me down
10:18or just maybe going over a scouting report here for Torkelson.
10:22They have noticed something, too, in the delivery, perhaps.
10:27He's done some good pitches, good curveballs.
10:30Tired the first batter on three pitches.
10:31Since then, 12 pitches.
10:33And now the bases are loaded.
10:34And two of those three hitters walking.
10:39The bases loaded, one away for Spencer Torkelson.
10:44Always have to be aware of that first pitch offering as well.
10:47It's a great RBI opportunity for Torkelson.
10:51He had over 30 home runs a year ago as well.
10:55And as part of the middle of this Tigers lineup, 31 home runs, 78 RBIs.
11:07played 155 games last year for Detroit, 27 doubles, 2, along with the 31 home runs.
11:18And just a 1 0 3 average with the bases loaded.
11:25Now that strikes on gets a little smaller for Torkelson to his liking.
11:29Off the plate, falling behind 2 1 0.
11:31He can look for a pitch.
11:34It's kind of middle, middle end.
11:37Let's see if Nick tries to keep that ball away.
11:39Big hole on that right side of the infield.
11:42This is loaded for the Tigers.
11:44One out here in the first inning.
11:473 and 0.
11:55Not a great situation.
11:58McGonagall waits on deck.
12:02Bases loaded, one out, 3-0.
12:05Almost hit him.
12:06And that'll walk in a run.
12:08The Tigers take a 1-0 lead.
12:10The bases loaded walk for Spencer Torkelson.
12:14Third walk of the first inning for Pavetta.
12:20As a hitter, you know what the pitcher's doing.
12:22He's missing.
12:23You've got to be patient.
12:24On the other hand, hitters can be really froggy and swing at a bad pitch because it's a great RBI
12:29opportunity.
12:31Torkelson's showing some patience there.
12:33Major League debut for Kevin McGonagall.
12:36His first play to parents in the majors.
12:42Lined to right and that's in for a hit.
12:45His first Major League hit will drive in two runs.
12:48This throw is headed to second base.
12:51It's late.
12:51It's 3-0 Detroit.
12:54Two runs single to right field.
12:56Major League debut for Kevin McGonagall.
12:59Get that out of the way quickly.
13:03Well, the young kid from the Philly area offering at the first pitch.
13:09The adrenaline's got to be pumping for this kid as what does he get?
13:13Looks like a cut fastball in when he turns on it.
13:20Good RBI opportunity for the kid.
13:22And the one swing of the bat, the Tigers are on the board.
13:30Now, Dillon Dingler, the catcher batting on the seventh spot, shoots it to the left side for a base hit.
13:36Torkelson from third will score.
13:39And it's 4-0 Tigers against Pavetta here in the first and still just one out in the inning.
13:47Swinging early, the last two hitters at McGonagall and now Dingler.
13:51What does he get here?
13:52Looks like a high breaky ball.
13:54It's a high sweeper.
13:55Not down.
13:57Now, the two hopper finds the hole through the 5.5 hole.
14:01So, after some patience during the walks, Tigers getting some pitches in the zone and capitalizing on those said pitches.
14:16Starts off ahead here.
14:17Fastball by him.
14:25So, if a double play ball was ever needed, it is right here and now, with one out runners at
14:40the corners.
14:47And then, with one out runners at the end of the game, the better, only one time, issued three walks
14:50in an inning, all of last year.
14:55Season high and walks in a game is five.
14:58He's walked three here in the first inning.
15:07Swing and a miss.
15:08Needed that.
15:09Strikes out Meadows.
15:11Second strike down for Pavetta, out number two in this first inning.
15:14And location of the fastball is very, very key because in the walks, there were some fastballs that were up
15:18out of the zone and away.
15:20And this one here, with two strikes at 93, before Seymour gets him.
15:30First and third, two down, Baez, with a swing and a miss.
15:35We are Baez.
15:38A strong draft choice originally by the Cubs.
15:422014.
15:43Night overall.
15:49Is he Nick trying to work him off the plate?
15:51Baez is a guy you don't have to throw a strike to.
15:53He'll swing and pitches out of the zone, but getting ahead is key.
15:55Big pitch coming up here, one and one.
15:59There's a home run off, but that in his career.
16:06Wanted to the sweeper that time.
16:10And you can expand even more against Baez.
16:18Not a good third, Denver at first, two outs.
16:24Nice block right there by Freddie.
16:27On the sweeper, again, bringing it outside just a little bit more.
16:32As a catcher, you anticipate, right?
16:34He gets in a good position, score the shoulders,
16:36and the heel of the glove, and smother
16:39and recover for the Padre catcher.
16:41Check the runner.
16:43Thirtieth pitch in his first inning for Pavetta.
16:49Foul down the right field line out of play.
16:54That's an intense inning.
16:5630 pitches, 31 pitches, 35 pitches, whatever.
16:59I mean, the intensity level is through the roof.
17:01It's opening day.
17:01It's your first outing.
17:09Popped up foul, more pitches to follow.
17:33another foul making him work
17:35a lot of work in this first
17:38inning for Pavetta out of it
17:41yet there is action Carl Hart
17:44first up through 30 plus pitches
17:50in an inning twice last season
17:55swinging a mess and he strikes
17:56him out but the damage has been
17:58done Tigers good for the top of

19:42by Bogart's Machado Merrill and
19:44Duhar sheets Laureano for mean and
19:47Cronenworth it's all tasked today
19:49going up against Tarek Skubal who
19:51has been posted a four nothing
19:53advantage before he's thrown a
19:59pitch pitch and what a school we're
20:01going to do he's of course going
20:03to go right after these Padre
20:04hitters we've told you all about
20:06him two times Cy Young award
20:07winner third consecutive season
20:09he's been the opening day
20:11starter for the Tigers fouled off
20:14at Dingler and look at those Cy Young
20:17award winning numbers from a year
20:19ago yeah they're eye popping very
20:20very good thirty one starts thirteen
20:22and six record look at the ERA and
20:24the innings pitch and the
20:25strikeouts two hundred forty one
20:27very very few walks only thirty
20:29three free passes well check swing
20:32dribble down the first baseline
20:33school ball flips back in at
20:35noon time to get Fernando
20:45let's take a look at the arsenal
20:46for the left-hander back on twenty
20:48twenty four and twenty twenty five
20:49kind of all around to the picture
20:52frame and with this pitch is the
20:54four seamer all the way down the
20:55curve ball look at last year more
20:56north and south and pretty good
20:58quality stuff with quality strikes
21:00more change ups in twenty twenty
21:03five as compared to the year
21:04prior that's his signature pitch his
21:07fastball upper 90s he could touch
21:09one oh one and then he's got
21:12that combo we just saw that
21:14hit Fernando check swing little
21:16dribbler down that first baseline
21:17it's a nasty pitch because he can
21:19locate them as well line in the
21:22left field a base hit for
21:23Bogarts wide turn it first to hold
21:27on with a one out single they get
21:33to the fastball if you can and
21:34that's exactly what a Xander does
21:36here high fastball some serious
21:39topspin foot is down nice eyes to
21:43the barrel contact sweet sound and
21:47there goes the no hitter he's
21:51got to get one back this in time
21:53rarely do people get to scuba
21:55last year but the first inning was
21:57really good for him five total
21:59earned runs in the first inning
22:00all of last year 31 starts from a
22:05year ago Machado and one hundred
22:09and fifty nine games last year
22:11twenty seven homers ninety five
22:13runs batted in to right center
22:18falling fast and in for a base
22:19hit Bogarts is headed for third
22:21he'll get there Padres have
22:23something going with a runner
22:31a board the next best they do a
22:33two run shot is yeah but some
22:35first and third action we talked
22:37about Manning in our open being
22:39mister consistency with those
22:40numbers twenty five plus home
22:43runs so the last ten seasons only
22:45got to do that well nothing wrong
22:46with singling and having multiple
22:49runners in a four nothing
22:51deficit first and third one way
22:56for Jackson Merrill third big lead

23:50up and this kid's intense like
23:52Nick Pavetta we got a couple of
23:54cats out there that are really
23:56really intense when it's their day
23:59to pitch did he go yes he did

24:05ring up Jackson Merrill number
24:08two strikeout number one for
24:10scuba does that change up we were
24:13just talking about looks like a

27:30the score so far in this
27:31contest some work to do beginning
27:33right here for Nick that a lot of
27:34pitchers in that first inning he
27:36needs a quick second right here
27:38and right now thirty three total
27:40pitches in that first inning
27:48Kerry Carpenter let it off to
27:51begin the ballgame by striking
27:52out.
27:53He would send nine hitters to
27:57the plate four of which scored
28:07Toros and Keith the trio for the
28:10Tigers one thing I look at this
28:15Tiger team the youth and the
28:19one of the kids that they have
28:20that were first round of seven of
28:21the nine in the lineup today done
28:24homegrown Tigers.
28:25How about that.
28:28To laugh Laureano moves over and
28:31makes the catch round number one.
28:34Well it's been quite a run for the
28:36Padres as the fire will tell you
28:38what a season appearances will
28:40for the last six years.
28:42That's great.
28:43A record seventy two sellouts last
28:45year at Petco Park that's
28:46incredible three million four
28:49hundred thirty seven thousand
28:50two hundred one in twenty twenty
28:52five and looking for more here in
28:55twenty twenty six but last year
28:57was amazing fantastic
28:58electricity coming to the
29:00ballpark each and every night
29:01thanks to the fans for what they
29:02did for us and the players to
29:04believe you mean we talk about
29:05this all the time.
29:06Don players love it man.
29:08You make it happen going out in
29:10a full house.
29:12Everybody loves it.
29:13Everybody's excited it brings up
29:14your game.
29:16Step up your game.
29:18And the Friar did a fine job.
29:20With those cards by the way.
29:22It's very good.
29:23On cue.
29:28Torres with one in the air to
29:30right field moving.
29:31Fernando back.
29:32On to the dirt of the track to
29:34make the catch right by the
29:35Pecto porch.
29:37Not an easy play there where the
29:38wall jets out but he makes it.
29:41Round number two.
29:43That guy got a dicey a little bit
29:45there Fernando very familiar
29:47there's the the shade he's got
29:48the glasses there's the flash
29:49look right into the Jumbo Jack.
29:56Two down here in the second
29:58inning for Colt Keith.
30:03What does he need a one two three
30:05inning here.
30:07Get back in that dugout.
30:18He's got to be right there.
30:23He's got to be right there.
30:32But they did a fine job of
30:33laying off those pitches.
30:34They didn't miss by much but
30:35they were definitely balls.
30:36Like that pitch there.
30:43Just refining the forcing fastball
30:46location.
30:46It's on the release point.
30:48Hopefully you can find it.
30:56And I know for some pitchers
30:58it's easy sometimes it's
31:00difficult but in a simple
31:02phrase just throw the ball
31:04lower right.
31:06I don't know what it is that
31:07Nick Pavetta does to maybe get
31:09that change for location.
31:13Lined in the right for a base
31:14hit a two out knock for Colt
31:16Keith who's two for two in the
31:17ballgame he stayed back nice in
31:20that curve ball from Nick
31:21Pavetta to down Keith at first
31:36that brings up Riley Green I mean
31:40as part of that first inning
31:41walked fly ball left field has
31:44Laureano camped underneath and
31:46he makes the catch it'll end the
31:48inning.
31:49We come back to Petco Park in
31:51San Diego Gav and sheets only
31:53sheets to lead it off.
31:55We come back.
32:24board.
32:266.
32:2712.
32:2915.
32:3016.
32:3016.
32:3217.
32:3316.
32:3517.
32:4216.
32:4418.
32:4419.
32:4420.
32:4518.
32:45and other.
32:47Loisie Madden 7.0,
32:49is that's a price price before you take
32:51them to be on the ground.
32:52As well as going on,
32:53first of all schools,
32:55which is the 12-rounding first-round
32:57one, next year,
32:58and is not going to be clear.
33:00In the 16th,
33:01this season,
33:02Loisie Madden 8.437,
33:04which runs out of the International Bowl.
33:07And with the children,
33:09Loisie Madden 7.0,
33:10the 16th,
33:12with a sledge,
33:34the game opening week is brought
33:35to you by Vanguard picture
33:39It's a perfect day here at Petco
33:41Park in San Diego no clouds the
33:45blue sky absolutely gorgeous can't
33:52beat it.
33:54Here's Gavin Sheets as promised
33:55leading it off ground right to
33:57the shortstop Baez who swung
33:59over to a second low throw but
34:01it's dug out by Torkelson.
34:03Well for Tarek Skubal he does a
34:05lot on that mound he pitches very
34:08very well when he's on his game
34:10he's got the four seed fastball as
34:11I mentioned upper 90s 98 to 100.
34:13Now he's got that change up what
34:15makes it so effective when you
34:16look at his delivery he sells it
34:18like a fastball and you can see
34:20those back to back the tunnel of
34:21it especially when he's locating
34:22down and away got that movement
34:25as well he is locked in and he had
34:29a really good season the last two
34:30seasons and that's what makes
34:32him so effective when we mention
34:33it once again more change ups
34:35last year from the left hander.
34:39A lot of swing and miss a lot of
34:42soft contact.
34:44That's why you got to concentrate
34:45using the whole field you can't
34:46concentrate always trying to pull
34:48Tarek Skubal.
34:50See two point two one.
34:52The R.A. year ago I'll get you
34:55Cy Young there's that change up
34:57we were just talking about and
34:59that one split the heart of the
35:00plate but was down by the knees
35:01and had some movement going
35:03south.
35:19moving down we're on a batting
35:20with one out here in the second
35:32inning it's good to be twenty for
35:34school ball with pretty for me
35:36waiting on deck swing and a mess
35:44gets him to chase the change up
35:46second strikeout for school ball
35:47two down.
35:48You know it's just not the
35:50change up that was a three to
35:52change up full count a lot of
35:54pitchers will go with a pitch
35:55where they can locate maybe
35:56something hard maybe a tight
35:58slider maybe a foreseen fastball
36:00there's the grip there from
36:02school ball right over the top
36:03looks like a fastball and you
36:05can see that's a great picture
36:06a great video of how far out in
36:08front Laureano is of that
36:09change up.
36:15It's pretty for me to catch your
36:17bats out of the eight spot.
36:29Effective.
36:32As most of school's pitches are
36:34yeah.
36:35That gives you a different look
36:36the curve ball after seeing the
36:37fastball and change up.
36:38It's like what's that.
36:40It's the hitter thinking.
36:57Two strikes two down.
37:07Well it looks like Freddie's
37:08going to get the lion's share
37:09behind home plate.
37:11Who is Capasano also one of the
37:13catchers.
37:15Could be a long summer for a
37:17catcher getting beat up behind
37:18home plate running the pitching
37:20staff having to swing the
37:21shillelagh strikes out for me
37:24back to back case for school
37:25bullets for nothing Tigers
37:29makes you sick.
37:29Now.
39:30How important is it to try to do
39:31too much against them.
39:32Yeah.
39:33That's exactly.
39:33We've got to double down on our
39:34approach and make sure we stick to
39:36it and you know take good at bats
39:38and figure out a way to scratch
39:39field cross.
39:40Hey you got a chance to enjoy
39:41opening day as a player for many
39:42years.
39:43How's the experience now as a
39:44manager.
39:44It's good.
39:45I'm not I'm not messing around the
39:46bullpen as much early in the game
39:47but it's exciting.
39:49It's great to be here back here at
39:50Petco Park.
39:51Great place to play baseball and
39:52you know base the fireworks here
39:54at the end of the game for us.
39:55Great.
39:55Thanks for the time and good luck
39:56in that first win.
39:57Dynamite back up to you.
39:59Let's get.
39:59Thanks very much.
40:00Boy what a different perspective
40:01for Craig Stanford.
40:02Yeah I bet.
40:03I'd say I talked to Craig in
40:04spring training as you did as
40:05well done and so much has
40:06changed for the skipper the new
40:08skipper.
40:08The game can be very very quick
40:10very very fast move up on you
40:12quickly but I'll tell you this
40:14much nothing has changed about
40:15the guy Craig Stanford that he
40:17was always one of our favorites
40:19when he was wearing the brown
40:21and gold and I'll tell you
40:23what nothing has changed about
40:24him at all.
40:25Always gracious with his time.
40:27Always willing to talk about his
40:28craft when he was a pitcher and
40:30quite frankly and you would
40:32agree with me Donnie.
40:33He didn't care if he got the
40:34ball as a starter as a spot
40:36starter as a reliever as a
40:37long reliever if some closer was
40:39on the shelf give me the ball
40:40that's his attitude and that
40:43goes a long way with not only
40:45the pitching staff but the team
40:47as well I think.
40:48The respect level that players
40:50had for him when he played
40:52very similar to the respect
40:53level that his players have
40:55for him now and that manager
41:13and that the Padres have that
41:16with Craig Stammen there.
41:18You mentioned it down the
41:19respect they have for him what
41:20he did in his career.
41:24I just know that he would be at
41:26his locker good or bad.
41:28Yeah that's another every day
41:29very accountable.
41:31Yeah.
41:34Brought many of his friends that
41:36he played with onto this
41:37coaching staff which is
41:38important to surround himself
41:39with a good nucleus.
41:43We had the chance to talk to
41:46Steven Sousa Jr.
41:47in spring training.
41:48His new hitting coach and
41:50certainly full line and step.
41:53They know what they're doing.
42:00Look out here.
42:02Line to center field.
42:04Merrill won't get there it drops
42:05in for a base hit.
42:07And Torkelson with a lead off
42:09single here in the Tigers third
42:11inning.
42:15Well first MLB plate appearance
42:18from McGonagall boy the the
42:19adrenaline must have been
42:20pumping he got a pitch up and
42:22in a short compact swing and
42:24a nice looking swing by the guy
42:25making his I should take kid
42:27making his major league debut
42:29swinging at the first pitch.
42:30Nothing wrong with driving in
42:32some runs and hitting a double.
42:33Freddie Freeman in them there.
42:35You see that swing.
42:36Yeah.
42:40Did he go.
42:41Yes he did.
42:42As I mentioned he grew up in
42:43the Philly area.
42:45And grew up admiring.
42:47They want to be like Chase
42:48Utley.
42:49Then I tell you what.
42:50You know Chase Utley.
42:52He played hard.
42:52He played the game right way.
42:53He played hard.
42:54And that's the way that
42:55McGonagall wants to play.
42:57Looking up to Chase Utley.
43:03Here's more on McGonagall.
43:04Will be seventh overall pick
43:06in the twenty three draft.
43:09AJ Hitch said that this was a
43:11big move by the organization.
43:12I'm not going to say risky.
43:14But you know it's a big move
43:15when you have a kid playing
43:17third base.
43:19Youngster.
43:19Major league debut.
43:21Here's AJ.
43:22He said he compared it to
43:23almost like the Jackson Merrill
43:25type deal when the Padres
43:26brought him up.
43:27Not a lot of time in Triple A
43:29if any.
43:31Same type thing from McGonagall.
43:33Big responsibility.
43:35And Jackson like a fish to
43:37water.
43:38And you mentioned it earlier
43:39down into his third season
43:40already.
43:42So that's what AJ Hitch
43:43compared it to like.
43:45Jackson Merrill when he first
43:46got called up to the big
43:47leagues and put right into the
43:48mix.
43:49What a great job AJ Hitch has
43:51done with these Tigers.
43:55Last year was tough.
43:56It's such a big lead.
43:57There was no doubt they're
43:58going to the postseason that
43:59all of a sudden they go through
44:00that stretcher you mentioned
44:01and right up against it the
44:04last day of the year had to
44:05fight their way in to get to
44:06the postseason.
44:07Fifteen and a half game lead
44:08for the Tigers.
44:09It's usually enough.
44:11But the last sixty nine games
44:13ago twenty eight forty one.
44:15Bring them right back to the
44:16pack again and thirteen to the
44:18last sixteen were else.
44:20That's tough.
44:22Yeah the postseason what an
44:23exciting series for the Tigers
44:25and the Mariners boy that was
44:26some kind of nice baseball
44:29there to to down the right field
44:33line towards the corner and it's
44:35off the fence heading for third
44:38is Torkelson the second we got
44:40to go safe just out of the
44:42reach Xander Bogart's certainly
44:52going to challenge us or not.
44:53It was close.
44:56They are not.
44:59The thing of the swing remember
45:00the first hit of the afternoon
45:02it was in a little bit that one
45:03was up middle in as well and it's
45:06off the wall.
45:09First two hits to the pole side
45:11for McGonagall and then showing
45:13off the speed because you have
45:14to because Fernando gets that
45:15ball cleanly.
45:16You're challenging the arm of the
45:18Padres right fielder and he gets
45:20in there safely infield in with
45:23nobody out second and third
45:24chance here for the Tigers to
45:26add on 60 pitches already for
45:33Pavetta through two plus boy
45:43punch out here or maybe a nice
45:44firm one or two hopper directly
45:46out one of your infielders to
45:48hold those runners I remember
46:12for Rudy Pemberton.
46:13Yeah.
46:13Some of the minor leagues he was
46:15in London double a some of the
46:18minors and of course in the
46:19majors two strikes to Dylan
46:29Dingler start from McGonagall in
46:31his major league career doesn't
46:35look like he's in awe of the
46:36situation.
46:37No very confident.
46:39One two is fouled back here's a
46:46look at our Disney Cruise Line
46:47Cruise Cam beautiful day in San
46:52Diego opening day Tigers looking
46:55to add on to what is already a
46:57four nothing advantage.
46:58They all for their runs in the
47:00first second and third nobody out
47:03here in the third inning swing
47:05and a miss needed that gets him
47:08on high sweeper fourth strike out
47:12of the day for Nick Pavetta he
47:15turned to that he needed that not
47:17exactly where he wanted it up and
47:20put that in your scouting report
47:22Meadows a tough time hanging
47:25against the high sweeper.
47:28Wow.
47:29That's very up second and third one
47:35down Parker Meadows strike out
47:37victim in the first inning and a
47:39little bloke left center falling
47:41fast falling in for a hit.
47:42Torkelson a score here comes
47:44McGonagall throw the plate will be
47:46late and two more runs are in for
47:48the Tigers they lead at six
47:50nothing to run bloop single for
47:54Parker Meadows and the Tigers
47:56open it up we fought that one
48:06off that was a cutter in just a
48:12little wedge little pitching
48:13wedge and the race is on.
48:16I think that one doesn't get away
48:18that was on the right side of
48:20Freddie that one almost going to
48:22the backstop there he stopped
48:23that one on that throw.
48:26They've been very aggressive
48:27against him it's the third hit
48:29on the first pitch and then a
48:30bat Meadows didn't wait around
48:34knocked in two Tigers have a six
48:36nothing lead and now run run
48:39Marinaccio is up in the pen he
48:42pitched for a team Italy and the
48:45WBC second time the navel has been
48:51out there to talk to Pavetta in
48:55three innings one out here in the
48:58third it brings up of your bias
49:10he's struck out swinging to end the
49:12first in a big part of the first
49:19inning was the walks three walks
49:21allowed by Pavetta they all turned
49:23into runs.
49:25How many times you hear from
49:27pitching coaches from pitchers
49:28walks will kill you right.
49:30No free passes.
49:33Tigers taking advantage of that.
49:55ball in the infield as Bogart's
49:59between second and third almost
50:00equal distance pitches up and
50:02makes the catch for out number
50:03two.
50:05And a fly ball in the infield as
50:05high sky today a lot like Arizona
50:08it's going to spring training
50:09day is that exactly just like
50:12your Arizona sky is as high as
50:14ever.
50:15No problem for Xander.
50:17I think it's higher.
50:18Yeah.
50:23Meadows at first two way two
50:25runs in last year for the
50:27Tigers four and a half runs they
50:29scored on the average at the
50:30six this afternoon.
50:35blocked by for me nicely to
50:36advance at first base for
50:38Meadows mean only caught Pavetta
50:55one time last year after he came
50:58over from Kansas City.
51:01And this year they work together
51:03exclusively in spring training
51:04and first outing of this year
51:08down the left field line.
51:09Laureano on the run will get
51:10there to end the inning but two
51:12more runs for the Tigers come
51:14across six nothing Detroit.
51:33so we'll be right back.
51:34One more time.
51:34One more time.
51:48See you guys at Montague.
51:50They will be right back.
51:51all day.
51:58It's time to take the
52:51Six nothing Tigers have lead
52:53over the Padres that's a score
52:54on our UC San Diego health
52:56scoreboard.
52:58Well Jake Cronenworth coming up
52:59to the dish batting ninth on
53:01opening day and Jake one of the
53:03bookends hoping to get out for
53:04Fernando we talk about his stance
53:06right his hands everybody makes
53:08little tweaks how about 2025 look
53:10where the hands are well he's made
53:11an adjustment noticed in spring
53:13training the hands right now lower
53:17hopefully hitting more doubles
53:18maybe running into one every now
53:20and then because Jake can crush a
53:21mistake had a really good spring
53:23training and what that does for
53:25Jake when you take a look at those
53:26hands right there basically Jake
53:28said trying to keep it simple
53:29right not a really huge difference
53:31but more athletic swing it's going
53:33to free up his swing a little bit
53:35there you see in one hundred
53:36thirty five games to forty six
53:37average and a more consistent
53:39path to the baseball consistency
53:42is what you want Jake as I
53:44mentioned he'll crush a mistake
53:45but hey nothing wrong with
