12:29Are you going to
12:59on board?
13:29completely?
13:59last year or a
14:29in a race and
14:59it's just change but
15:29and it's just change and
15:59and it's just change and
16:29and Piastro
16:59on the left as well
17:29I think I think
17:59and it's just change and
18:29and it's just change and
18:59I mean it's just change and
19:29also known as
19:59result and I'm just
20:29and it's just change and
20:59and it's just change and
21:29and it's just change and
21:59and it's just change and
22:29so you have to change and
22:59and in front and it's just change and
23:29started and it's just change and
23:59and it's just change and
24:29braking and it's just change and
24:59and it's just change and
25:29and it's just change and it's just change and
25:59I want to use that word, that beeped up word there, to describe how my car was handling in Manicor.
26:05And my engineer just said, let's beep all round, please.
26:09Took off his headset and walked down the back of the garage for the rest of the session.
26:12So I learned that lesson the hard way.
26:15They prefer slightly more detailed technical information on the radio.
26:21Yeah, it's not a technical term, although I'm sure it's used in technical ways very often.
26:29Right, Peter Baer, the CEO of Racing Bulls, getting quite animated as he looks at the screen.
26:37Remember, Isaac Hadja had been noted for causing a collision with Oli Behrman,
26:41but I think there's no further investigation on that.
26:44No, there isn't.
26:45The stewards have decided that was just a racing incident right at the start.
26:49He's been passed since by Fernando Alonso.
26:52Behrman remains currently in the top ten.
26:54Look how that gap is opening up.
26:56I said two laps ago, it was four and a half seconds.
26:58It's now nearly six seconds between Russell and Verstappen.
27:02And Lando Norris is just chipping away.
27:04Tenth of a second a lap on Verstappen's lead over here.
27:08So Verstappen's got the softer tyres on.
27:10It hasn't given him any benefit off the start and in the first few corners.
27:13So that just releases George now to drive his own race.
27:17He doesn't have to think about a world championship.
27:19Max does to an extent.
27:21Certainly Lando and Oscar absolutely do.
27:23But it does look like at this stage that Oscar and Norris rather is the faster of the two McLarens.
27:30They really need to come up and start putting some pressure on Max Verstappen.
27:33And Kimi Antonelli applying pressure to the Ferrari ahead of him, which is Charles Leclerc, gaining seven tenths in the last six laps or so.
27:42You get a funny angle from this camera, but it looks in the straights like Kimi's right hand down on the steering wheel, which I hate driving a single seater do.
27:52So do most drivers.
27:53We'll see now when we go on board.
27:55Does that look right hand down to you?
27:57Yeah, it does.
27:57That's heavily right hand down going down the straight, isn't it?
28:01That's an awful feeling because you need to give it less turn in the right handers and more in the left handers.
28:08It's an awful lot to try and work out on your first foray into a race in Singapore when you're 19 years old and your first season in Formula One.
28:17He's the leading rookie driver in this race so far.
28:20Let's head to Ant at race control.
28:21Yeah, Kimi Antonelli doing a cracking job at the moment, Crofty, and he's been told as well to severely look after the tyres, just really reduce the pace.
28:29So if he can do this in the turbulence and if this is what we see as massive tyre saving, I feel like he's got a lot more pace there in hand.
28:38And Leclerc has been on the radio as well complaining of understeer.
28:41His team have been trying to help him with the tools that they have available through the steering wheel to mitigate that.
28:46But yeah, it looks to me like Antonelli definitely has some pace in hand and it would make sense the way that Russell's commanding this race right now.
28:54Yeah, quite.
28:55Mercedes were strong in Canada and there are similarities between that racetrack and this, so don't be surprised that they're strong here.
29:02So we're keeping an eye on the gap between Lewis Hamilton in seventh and Fernando Alonso in eighth because there's a seven and a half second gap there.
29:09We're getting two races forming and if that happens, it starts building a space for the leaders to drop into to get a pit stop away and maybe a little bit of an undercut to get out on fresh tyres.
29:22And it's worth up to three seconds here.
29:25If you can get in before your rivals and get a good out lap, you can gain three seconds on them with fresh tyres and full banzai attack.
29:33So far though, no one into the pits. It's all quiet down there apart from Ted.
29:38Yeah, but that Kimi Antonelli steering issue, I'm convinced that's what they were doing.
29:43They were fiddling, they were trying to adjust the steering rack of Antonelli's car.
29:48That's what we saw on the grid, Crofty.
29:50Now, certainly I saw something happening with Russell, but they were messing around with actually the steering rack on Kimi's.
29:58It looked like they had it fixed.
30:00Maybe they just thought, look, we can't do any more for it.
30:02Let's just button it up and send him on his way.
30:04But that would be something they saw from the formation lap if they weren't able to fix it.
30:09And how much of a challenge is that for Kimi at the hardest race of the year to be able to be driving without your steering wheel straight in a straight line?
30:16It's been an upturn in form in the last couple of races for Kimi Antonelli.
30:20He's a very talented young man.
30:21He's got it all to do here tonight.
30:23And this is a pit stop for Red Bull and a wing change down at Salbon up for Bortoleto.
30:30And Tsunoda is the Red Bull car that is coming in.
30:33And that is why Bortoleto needs a new front wing.
30:36If you think Lando Norris has got problems, then Gabi Bortoleto is coming in before that end plate completely falls off.
30:43And Lando Norris saying there, I hit the wall.
30:46Keep an eye out.
30:47Remember, on his way to victory last year, he might have glanced the wall and very nearly at turn 14 went into the wall and ended his chance of victory.
30:56Bortoleto comes back out in the race along with Tsunoda.
31:00They are the last two.
31:01Yeah, this is going to be good information for the other teams and drivers to see how the hard compound white mark tyre performs as a fresh tyre at the back.
31:12And let's have a look at what happened down into turn one.
31:15People coming at you from all directions.
31:18He just got pinced, didn't he?
31:20He did.
31:21I think it was contact with Stroll in the Aston Martin, but he had to move over to avoid the Alpina bit.
31:27Yeah, there's all sorts of sensors and pressure, pressure sensors and what have you in those front wings are hugely complex.
31:36Is this where Lando Norris hit the wall, turn 17?
31:39Yes, it was.
31:40It's a glance.
31:42Well, it always looks kind of okay, doesn't it?
31:44And then when we see it here, it always looks harder.
31:47But I think that's all right.
31:49It's a scraping, a glance of the wall.
31:52Understood.
31:52He just understeered into the wall.
31:54You could see the front tyre scrubbing across the racetrack.
31:57He's having too many adventures this evening as young Lando.
32:02Skirmishes that he is surviving, but sometimes he's just got to have nights like that and get through it.
32:08Colopinto now in the pits for Alpine.
32:12He was one of those that started on the soft compound tyre, lasted 15 laps.
32:16I think Lewis Hamilton put the softs on last year, lasted 15 laps.
32:20That was the longest stint on softs at the start.
32:25They're an improved soft tyre this year.
32:27They're more robust.
32:28They can go that little bit longer.
32:31Medium tyres going on to Colopinto, suggesting that he will be not going to the finish on those.
32:37And that it's very much a two-stop race for him.
32:40Well, the information we would get, Martin, it was on the cusp, this, between a one and a two-stop race.
32:46Yeah, and this track position is key, isn't it?
32:48It's absolutely everything here.
32:50So a two-stop is faster.
32:52But if you get tucked up behind some one-stoppers, measuring their tyres out, you're dead in the water.
33:00So on board with the McLaren, Lando Norris gaining half a second.
33:04The company's three or four cars on the window, so think about the undercut of Max.
33:08Yeah, easy.
33:09Well, he's now 1.2, 1.1 seconds behind Max Verstappen.
33:13You'd think that undercut would be pretty easy.
33:17Pit window opens at about lap 20 for the soft tyre runners.
33:20And if you were Red Bull, you probably wouldn't want Max Verstappen losing time, getting involved, defending.
33:26You'd bring him in sooner rather than later if you could.
33:28Yeah, and what's happened here is Mercedes and Russell have got themselves an eight-second lead.
33:35They can afford to wait a lap before reacting to anybody trying to undercut them.
33:41That's a lovely, comfortable cushion to have.
33:44George is a quarter of the track away from getting near any back markers.
33:49And then there's only three of them.
33:52So he's not got any traffic issues ahead.
33:55They'll all be desperate to wait out and see if they get a safety car opportunity.
34:00Because you lose 12 seconds then instead of 25.
34:04Because your rivals are all going at safety car speed instead of racing speed.
34:08So meanwhile, Oscar Piastri has now dropped to about five seconds, it is five seconds, behind his teammate Lando Norris.
34:15And he's lapping about three-tenths of a lap slower than his British teammate and championship rival in exactly the same car, albeit a slightly different front wing to Lando's there.
34:27Is that tyre management, is that kind of pace management, thinking that one-stopper might be the way to go here, let my teammate push a little bit.
34:35He might have to stop twice, I'll get him in the end.
34:37Well, I think there's one-stop sort of what we want to do.
34:41When we've ever gone on board with anybody, they're lifting, Lyco as it's called, lifting coast into, it saves fuel.
34:49Especially if we don't have a safety car, they'll probably be under-fueled for the race.
34:53So you lift early, let the aerodynamics, the drag, slow the car down, brake later.
34:59But they're coasting through some of these corners.
35:02So pole position was 129.
35:04And now we've got a lot of fuel on board.
35:06It's three-tenths per ten kilos.
35:08I know many of you will know is the penalty carrying 10 kilograms of fuel around here.
35:13They start with about 110, I believe it is.
35:16So we've got some fuel element going on.
35:20But they're currently doing 137.
35:22They're not, they're, what are they, eight seconds off pole position time.
35:26That is how they're managing out there.
35:28And they're standing by at McLaren, Ted Kravitz, with hands on tyres that say Lando on the blankets.
35:38Is there team radio?
35:40Well, it just said box to overtake the Stappen.
35:42There was no audio.
35:43We had the, we just had the written word instead, Ted, you'd be a fan of that.
35:47Are they duping?
35:48Is that another McLaren dupe, though?
35:50They are, the helmets are being secured and they might make a stop.
35:55They might not.
35:56They're trying to cover all the bases.
35:59But the problem is, is that if they're facing, if Norris is racing Russell for the win,
36:04then Max is doing Russell a huge favour here.
36:07No, they're not coming out.
36:08Yes, they are coming out.
36:09They are coming out.
36:10It's not a fake.
36:10It's going to put Lando into some traffic.
36:13It's going to be behind Alonso and Hadjar, but they're on the soft tyre.
36:17And I'm assuming, I was going to say, I'm assuming they think they're going in.
36:21They're going back in.
36:22They called him to stay out.
36:25Yeah.
36:27It was one of those, he'd do the overtake on Max Verstappen, but he would get stuck behind
36:32the Alonso-Hadjar battle.
36:33It makes no sense, does it?
36:35That was, yeah, that was almost a bit blatant, wasn't it?
36:39Yeah.
36:41You weren't convinced at all, were you?
36:42No, it's a bit, you know, Box, Box, Box would have got it, but Box, Box, Box, to overtake
36:48Max kind of, I don't know, it sort of rang as a bit of a, because there's just simply,
36:56they'll just put him back into traffic and it'll be a horror story.
36:59Tedos.
37:00The other problem, of course, if they came out with the hard tyres, Martin, so of course,
37:04one stop, the perfect time to stop medium going on to hard is about eight laps from now,
37:10lap 26, 27.
37:11So if they put Lando on the hard, told him to go to the end of the race, that would make
37:15him vulnerable to Oscar, wouldn't it, later on in the race?
37:18So that's the other reason why they don't really want to stop so early.
37:20Yeah.
37:20And to be fair, they tell the driver, so the driver doesn't have to come back on the road
37:25and go, why are we stopping now?
37:27My car, my tyres feel fantastic.
37:29They will do give him that sort of information, but it was quite a bit too well telegraphed,
37:35that one.
37:36Nobody is within one second at the moment.
37:40Oh, DRS range.
37:42To get that extra pace down the straight to try and make an overtake.
37:46The closest driver to their rival on track is this man, Lando Norris, who's just a few
37:52hundreds outside of Max Verstappen's magic one second advantage.
37:57George Russell now nearly nine seconds clear.
38:00He did the 1.37.0 on the last lap.
38:03Verstappen and Norris put in 1.37.4s and Oscar Piastri put in a 1.36.9.
38:10Is this now where Oscar Piastri, after managing his tyres, starts to just push that little
38:15bit more and bring himself back into a potential undercut situation?
38:20It very much looks that way, doesn't it?
38:22Oscar's been biding his time, probably letting the red mist settle a little bit, because he's
38:27very unhappy, isn't he, about what happened in the first couple of corners and the lack
38:31of any sort of action thereafter by the team, but as they said to him, you've got to get
38:38your head down and see what you can do in this race.
38:40We'll sort it out later, but this is where McLaren need to start using the raw pace that
38:48they have.
38:49Absolutely.
38:50And Piastri setting a personal best in the first sector on this lap 19 to try and get
38:57that advantage that Norris has over him down even more.
39:03Would he be allowed, I wonder, free to race to do the undercut on his teammate?
39:08His teammate just has to wait a little bit longer.
39:11It's a fascinating battle at any given time, but now there might be a few more subplots and
39:18dimensions opening up into that particular contest.
39:23So, Lando's currently 21 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso in eighth, the gap we talked
39:31about dropping into, and this looks like Red Bull are going to go first with the hard
39:37compound tyre.
39:38Yeah.
39:39Verstappen is coming into the pits, Norris stays out, McLaren have done the duping once
39:45more.
39:46They've decided we've had enough of those soft tyres.
39:48The pit window opens for the soft tyre runners on lap 20, and it is Max Verstappen who comes
39:53in.
39:54That looks about a second slower than he would have wanted, and it is.
39:57It might make Lando's job that little bit easier to do the overcut on him if he can.
40:02So, this is where McLaren then have got to just punch some incredible times in, and he
40:07does get out in front of Fernando Alonso.
40:09The gap we talked about some, what, 20 minutes ago.
40:12Yeah.
40:13So, that was the key thing when the race separated into two parts.
40:17It's enabled that, and Red Bull have used the absolutely first opportunity to do that.
40:24So, what will McLaren do?
40:25Well, if they react to that, they'll end up behind Verstappen.
40:29If they've got incredible pace, they need to deliver it now.
40:33Outlap critical.
40:34Let's get on with it.
40:35Jampiero Lambias, he says, to Max Verstappen.
40:40The undercut is really, really powerful here in Singapore, and McLaren have conceded that
40:46advantage by thinking they're not in a position to get Lando in and then out again ahead of
40:52Fernando Alonso, but that extra second that Verstappen has on Norris meant that he could
40:57do that.
40:58Yeah, and of course, if Lando comes out, he might only just be ahead of the Aston Martin.
41:05Will they pit him this lap?
41:07If they do, they need a two-point-something-second stop.
41:10We keep an eye out, and he does not go in the pits.
41:13No.
41:14But it's not an unduly fast lap that he's pulling out here, Lando Norris.
41:19And we've already got Verstappen, fastest man in the middle sector of this Grand Prix,
41:24entire Grand Prix, on his outlap.
41:26It was Norris' fastest lap of the Grand Prix, though.
41:29His teammate Oscar Piastri, albeit by a tenth of a second, was actually quicker than Norris
41:35on that lap.
41:36Russell out in front now by ten and a bit seconds from Norris, then Piastri, then
41:40Leclerc.
41:41Antonelli in fifth place, and still that one and a half seconds behind Charles Leclerc,
41:46who's coming in for racing balls.
41:48It's not Liam Lawson, it's Isaac Hadja who's making his way down the pit lane now, pitting
41:55from the points.
41:56See, at this sort of pace, Verstappen is quite quickly going to come up behind Hamilton,
42:01Antonelli and Leclerc if they don't want to pit just yet, so that might be the problem
42:08they have at Red Bull with this strategy, unless the two Ferraris and the second Mercedes pit.
42:15Now, if you're Mercedes...
42:16This is going to be tight, Martin, sorry to cut in there, Franco Colopinto and Isaac Hadja.
42:21Hadja is ahead of the Alpine, but that was really tight there, and Isaac Hadja weaving all
42:27over the track, Colopinto having to watch out a little bit behind him.
42:30Yeah, if you were Mercedes, you might just leave Antonelli out there for a little while
42:35to arrest Verstappen's progress.
42:40Yeah, and I think maybe McLaren will be, if they weren't listening to your comments,
42:45thinking it very much themselves, and that might be what saves their strategy for the
42:50time being, keeping Lando Norris out.
42:53Antony, to you at Sky Race Control.
42:55So they've told Lando and Oscar to stick to their target lap time, so both laps in
43:00succession, they did 37-0, this time around both of them 36-7s.
43:05So it's around the 37-0 there, target lap time, they've got to start building that tyre offset
43:11right now to Verstappen to get him later on in the race.
43:14So this will catch their attention, Leclerc is now pitted for Ferrari, so that clears the
43:19way to an extent for Verstappen, who's catching Hamilton and Antonelli very quickly.
43:24They've got to keep an eye on the gap, McLaren have to keep an eye on the gap now to protect
43:29Oscar Piastri against Charles Leclerc with fresh tyres.
43:33Leclerc needs to be out ahead of Nico Hülkenberg here, and that's not happened.
43:36No.
43:37It wasn't a bad pit stop from Ferrari, but I got the feeling they thought we could get
43:42out and get clear of Hülkenberg.
43:44They haven't, and obviously there's a tyre offset between Leclerc and the Sauber, but
43:48he needs to get an overtake done here at the end of this long straight or he's going to
43:52get held up.
43:53He should breeze past this car, and Hülkenberg's not fighting it that much, he does breeze
44:01past it.
44:02Yeah.
44:03He should breeze past it, and the customer motor in the back of that Sauber for Ferrari,
44:11anyway, he used to say massive tyre offset.
44:13OK, so free to push now.
44:15Well, I'm driving, but everything is working against me this race.
44:20Needed a couple of laps, not to go absolutely flat out, to get pace, to get heat, to bring
44:27the tyres up to a really good temperature, but not overdo it, because if you just bring
44:32these hard tyres in nice and gently, they'll be your friend for quite some time.
44:37Yeah, he's got a long way to go, hasn't he, on them 40 laps, but it sounds like he's carrying
44:43car issues.
44:44We know he's carrying downshift issues.
44:46Max is not particularly happy in there, is he?
44:50No.
44:51And then does a new fastest lap of the Grand Prix, but it's only three tenths faster than
44:56the McLarens on their used tyres.
44:59Now, we think, obviously, back to races earlier in the season, where McLaren had much better
45:04tyre wear than their rivals, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull, but they admit, McLaren, that
45:12others have developed their way back into the game here a little bit.
45:16They haven't been bringing at Woking upgrades and parts to races.
45:19Red Bull have.
45:20So, have they got that tyre wear advantage?
45:22We'll see.
45:23I think Red Bull have just made what they had work properly, is my understanding, rather
45:27than with some new front wing bits.
45:29But you see what I mean about how quickly he's catching Lewis Hamilton.
45:32So, Red Bull will be hoping very much that Ferrari and Mercedes, Pit Antonelli, too.
45:39And what can you tell us?
45:41Sir, it's really interesting, the fight between Lando Norris and George Russell.
45:45That's all they're talking about to Lando, the gap between him and George Russell.
45:49And Russell's just been told, as hard as you can now, Norris was a 36-7 last time around.
45:54Yeah, and Russell was a 37-2 last time around.
45:58Piastri was a 36-6.
46:01That was about a tenth of a second faster.
46:03See, with Verstappen, as well, out of the way, Martin.
46:06If Piastri wanted to push that...
46:08So, I know you've got those gaps and you're trying as hard as you can.
46:11Norris was a 36-7.
46:14Yeah, this is my pace.
46:16As far as I drop him.
46:17That's all she wrote, as far as George has got at the moment.
46:22Yeah, I'm just wondering, Piastri can push, get that gap reduced in half between himself and Norris quickly.
46:28There's an undercut for Oscar Piastri out there.
46:31You'd imagine they'll pit Norris first, but who knows?
46:36Yeah.
46:39I mean, yeah, the lead McLaren gets the first call, but all is fair in love and war, they say, tonight.
46:45Ted, down to you.
46:47Ollie Bem and Pitts, but I'm looking down to Ferrari.
46:49They've got to be thinking about Lewis Hamilton and what to do with him.
46:52His previous lap, the last time around, but one was a 1.38.
46:56It's got better now, a 1.37, but he's still pretty slow out there, Hamilton.
47:01I think his tires are starting to go off.
47:04And will they wait for Verstappen to catch him or not before they put in real soon?
47:08Well, they reckon in one lap, Hamilton is going to be caught by Max Verstappen, not necessarily passed, but certainly caught.
47:15Well, this gap that George Russell was able to build in the early stages of this race is paying handsome dividends for him at the moment.
47:23It is. It gives them freedom.
47:24Currently, Leclerc is five seconds behind the fuel pit window.
47:28I mean, I don't want to lose track position to him.
47:31It feels pretty low.
47:33Yeah, they're nervous.
47:35Well, that's what we talked about.
47:37You know, they've got to protect Oscar against Charles Leclerc at the McLaren pit wall.
47:43On board with Max Verstappen, who is the fastest man on the racetrack currently.
47:49Lewis Hamilton is the car ahead of him, and they're going to get him out of the way, Ferrari.
47:53Oh, that'll be music to Red Bull's ears.
47:58Yeah.
47:59So just the next car up the road is Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes.
48:03Well, I tell you what, I think the McLarens are coming a bit here as well and are making their move to try and bring themselves back into this race.
48:12As Hamilton now pits, that didn't look to be as straightforward as he would have wanted.
48:16Three and a half seconds. It's a slow pit stop for Lewis Hamilton.
48:19Yeah, the right front didn't get the invitation particularly early, did it?
48:22That was a difficult one.
48:24But I don't think it'll cost Lewis too much because he was sort of on the back of that pack.
48:29He can make that up.
48:30Whether he comes out ahead or behind a loss, and it is going to be ahead a loss.
48:34Yeah, that was the key thing.
48:35So all done there.
48:37So what McLaren have got to do now is get a tire offset, isn't it?
48:40Get fresher tires.
48:42Piastri's got to watch out for Leclerc.
48:45Leclerc's doing 36-4.
48:47Piastri last time around a 37-5.
48:49So he lost one over a second of that advantage.
48:52So they might even have to pit Piastri first to protect if they want to keep Norris out there and give him better tires at the end of the Grand Prix.
49:02This was Lewis Hamilton's pit stop.
49:04We saw that it was a little bit slow.
49:07Great view that he would have had of that right tire eventually going on.
49:13So he's been into the pits.
49:14Isaac Hadge has been into the pits as well.
49:16Since he's come out, his pace has really dropped off.
49:18He's got an engine issue.
49:19He's losing about four tenths of a lap.
49:21Ted, down to you.
49:22Yeah, so George Russell pits and having been done a favour.
49:25That's solid.
49:26Not spectacular, but solid by Mercedes.
49:28So having been done a favour by Max Verstappen in the first stint, George has the latitude.
49:34Just take it easy and pit now quickly followed by Kimi Antonelli.
49:39It's almost a double stack by Mercedes.
49:41And I think getting Russell in now keeps him well clear of Max Verstappen on the track.
49:46There's the double stack and here comes Kimi Antonelli out of the pits.
49:50And they're hoping he'll be out ahead of Fernando Alonso on the soft tyre who is yet to pit.
49:57And George Russell's tyres then are...
50:01Fernando, the gap to Oscar is 4.7.
50:04He's going to have to pit soon to cover Leclerc.
50:06Are you willing to let Leclerc pit...
50:09I'm sorry, let Oscar pit the lap before you?
50:11Yep.
50:13Er, no, I wouldn't.
50:15I was surprised I heard a yes there.
50:18I thought he said yes.
50:19Somebody said no, I will not.
50:20He said yes, er, no.
50:22This is Monza all over again.
50:24And he's not happy to give Oscar the first call this time around.
50:29And I'm not surprised, to be honest, because it didn't exactly work out for him at the time very well in Monza.
50:36And then they had to swap the positions back again.
50:39But...
50:40So he'll have a seven lap advantage over Verstappen with his tyres.
50:44Probably not as much as they'd hoped.
50:46So basically by not letting Piastri pit first, it's sort of meaning Lando's got to get the tyres on.
50:52But he doesn't want all the fuss of the Monza again, as you said.
50:55Yeah.
50:56But it's the right time to bring that car in.
50:59But as we see Piastri go through into what is now the lead.
51:04So Piastri takes the lead of this race.
51:07George Russell will...
