00:02With the highest skin cancer rates in the world, Australians need sunscreens they can trust.
00:08But that trust was shot last year.
00:10Only four met their advertised SPF rating.
00:14Consumer watchdog Choice revealed 16 out of 20 popular sunscreens they tested didn't meet their SPF label claims.
00:22And ABC investigations called into question the validity of SPF testing of some sunscreens.
00:28More than a dozen sunscreens pulled from shelves over SPF concerns.
00:32Now the National Medicines Regulator is proposing sweeping changes to how sunscreens are regulated.
00:38They include changes to SPF testing methods, improved oversight of SPF testing and new sun protection factor labels.
00:48We're really happy to see that there's movement on this. This is what consumers wanted, it's what consumers expected.
00:53One proposal is to remove SPF numbers from sunscreen packaging altogether and replace them with low, medium, high and very
01:01high ratings.
01:02The regulator says this would remove confusion about what SPF numbers mean.
01:07But choice isn't a fan.
01:10Consumers know what number they're looking for, they just need to have confidence that that number when it's on the
01:14front of a sunscreen bottle is going to be accurate.
01:16What we need to do instead is be educating people about the environments in which sunscreens should be used, how
01:23they should be used, how much you need to get to get that high level of protection.
01:27The Therapeutic Goods Administration, or TGA, which regulates sunscreen, says the proposed changes are aimed at strengthening confidence in sunscreen.
01:37It's seeking public feedback on the proposals until the end of May.
