00:00Hey, everybody. Mark McDonald here, executive producer at Enhance.
00:05And I'm CJ, user experience director at Enhance.
00:08And we are here to talk humanity, our deep dive video.
00:17So hopefully you've heard of our game by now, but if you haven't, it is an action puzzle game.
00:24We announced a few years ago with a very mysterious trailer,
00:28but more recently we're coming clean with exactly what you're going to be doing in the game.
00:33And this video is part of that.
00:35Part of what we're really excited to be able to talk about now is that the game not only coming
00:41out May 16th,
00:42but also a day one PS plus second tier and up title.
00:48So depending on what territory you live in that the Exos has different names,
00:51but we're very excited about that, especially as we'll get into with regard to the user stages
00:57and the stage creator.
00:58But before we do that, let's set the table here, CJ.
01:03So what is humanity?
01:05Well, it's an action puzzle game, but let me ask you this.
01:09Have you ever wanted to wake up as a dog?
01:12I can't say that I have.
01:14Deep dive video or not, I got to be honest.
01:16No, but I would.
01:17It just sounds like a fascinating premise for a video game.
01:20Indeed it is.
01:21And that is the conceit here with humanity.
01:24You wake up one morning and you find that you're a dog.
01:27We have a job to do.
01:29Indeed you do.
01:30A disembodied voice tells you that it's your job to lead the people to the light.
01:34This sort of brainless, ever forward marching horde of humans.
01:38You must save them.
01:40So you do that.
01:41You're in the game.
01:42You're in the levels here as our little iridescent Shiba Inu.
01:47And the people can, you know, on their own, they will walk forward.
01:51They can push blocks.
01:53They can swim.
01:54They can climb walls.
01:56But yeah, like you mentioned, they're pretty much little brainless drones.
02:00And that has to do with some of the storyline that there's, what, 90 levels?
02:06That's right.
02:0690 levels.
02:07There is a nice, light little narrative that hopefully incentivizes you to keep going through it.
02:13But yeah, most of the game is focused on these action puzzle stages.
02:19And you are in there controlling the people via these commands that you're dropping.
02:25So these turn commands are pretty self-explanatory, but you also give them different jump commands.
02:32You have long jumps.
02:34You have high jumps.
02:36You can have the people float, which changes their attributes.
02:40They can survive longer falls and also fans blow them higher up into the air.
02:45Later on, you equip them with weapons.
02:49Again, things are going on in the story that kind of lead you there.
02:53And yeah, things like that.
02:54So the game is constantly adding new mechanics, new elements, trying to keep it fresh as you go along.
03:01And then mixing them back with the elements that you've had up until then.
03:04So we'll go into some examples of that with some specific stages.
03:09Yeah, let's begin here with Loop the Loop, which was in our demo, our limited time demo.
03:15But it's one of our favorite stages.
03:16So we like to use it to illustrate how things work in the game.
03:21You see us here guiding the people.
03:23Normally, this would be a lot of trial and error, but really the only place that you can have them
03:28jump to is this area.
03:31And after you do that, you guide them onto this little, that men's room sign is a switch.
03:36Well, what is it going to activate?
03:38You don't have to do this, but optionally here, you can engage the free look camera and see here.
03:45Oh, okay.
03:45That switch, those lines are showing something that it's going to do.
03:49So once you come back out of the free look camera, so it's just like a little hint, a little
03:53optional hint.
03:54If you want to stop things and chill for a second, figure things out at any time, you can do
03:59that.
03:59And here now, it has added to the path towards the goal.
04:06Whoa, what did the dog just do right there?
04:08Oh my god, CJ, that's soul surfing, I think we call it.
04:13I think it's called diving in the actual game.
04:16But we'll get more into that in another level.
04:19Yeah, the dog can go places where the people can't and vice versa.
04:22But the conceit of this stage, spoiler warning, the loop-the-loop idea is that you're going to create that
04:29loop of the people
04:31so they're constantly activating those two switches, which you need to create the road towards the goal here, CJ.
04:38Yeah, I'm going to jump these people over this pit here and grab this goldie.
04:44You got it all figured out.
04:45You got it all figured out.
04:46What could possibly go wrong?
04:47Oh, CJ.
04:49They jumped over.
04:50Let me adjust here.
04:51Nope.
04:52Still going over.
04:54Oh, that's why the hashes on that block is a climbable wall.
04:59That's why that was there.
05:00That mystery is solved.
05:02So yeah, and Goldie there being that kind of Oscar-looking gold giant person,
05:08those are generally optional, but sometimes not, sometimes required to finish a stage.
05:16What are we seeing here, CJ?
05:17We're seeing Goldie rewards.
05:20So as you collect Goldie, you can unlock special rewards in the game, and sometimes that's skins for the humans,
05:27and other times that's game features like a fast-forward or pause time.
05:34music selector, yeah, that you can choose the music for the stage.
05:38So some of them are, most of them are cosmetic, but there's a few there that are like, you know,
05:43nice little additions to the game mechanic kind of quality of life features.
05:47Yeah, and you can play around with the skins.
05:51Some of these later ones are pretty awesome.
05:54Some wild ones, yeah, yeah.
05:57So let's get into a more pure puzzle stage.
06:01So a lot of the stages in Humanity, most of them have this mix of action puzzle, but there are
06:07some stages that run more to one side than the other.
06:11And this is an example of a style of stage that is more, yeah, in the pure puzzle camp.
06:17So these stages, time is stopped when the stage begins by default.
06:24So you have to go through and place all your commands first, then you start time, and you are powerless.
06:31You can't change your commands anymore in real time.
06:34So you have to think ahead and plan everything kind of through.
06:39And here is an example of one such stage mental block, which was in the demo, again, trying to stick
06:46to demo stages so we don't spoil too much.
06:49This block, if you activate time, you see what happens here.
06:52Okay, the people come through.
06:54They push this big black pushable block down a bit, then they fall under it.
06:58Okay, so how can I redirect them now to push that block down and try to get it on that
07:06switch, which has that little, looks like a fragile logo, little box logo, means that that is a switch activated
07:13by pushing a pushable block on it.
07:15So here we go.
07:16What if we try this?
07:17We have the people start to walk across that block, and then they'll fall off.
07:22So here we go again.
07:24They start to fall down.
07:25Now we can fast forward via the little optional mechanic that we unlocked early on with our goldies in the
07:32goldie rewards that we talked about before.
07:34There we go.
07:35So now they push the block.
07:36Now they're pushing it back.
07:37Oh, wait.
07:38Okay, that activated the bridge.
07:40We're good to get to the end.
07:41But, oh, shoot.
07:42We forgot one link up turn command.
07:47So are we screwed?
07:49Do we have to start all over?
07:50Well, not really, because we have this idea of retry keep commands where we can reset the level but keep
07:56everything we've done so far so you can make tweaks, make adjustments to what you had without losing everything.
08:04If you want to, you can do that.
08:05You can wipe the slate totally clean, but we don't need to.
08:08We just need to add in that one arrow.
08:10And if we do so now, this time, we're going to link up and get our goldie, and we are
08:17good to go to the end.
08:20Yeah, I actually use retry keep commands quite a bit to experiment with different solutions and possibilities in a stage.
08:28Instead of mapping the whole thing out, I'll map out maybe the first third and test to see if that
08:33worked and then use retry keep commands to adjust anything that I need to.
08:37But let's say a stage is too difficult for me, and I just want to – I just need a
08:45hint, just a little hint.
08:47What do I do, Mark?
08:47What do I do?
08:48You're weak, CJ.
08:50You're weak.
08:51No, you checked this out, which is our little solution video.
08:58So every stage – we didn't want people to get stuck and give up.
09:02So every stage has built-in a solution video.
09:08On PS5, you could do that.
09:10PS Plus subscribers can do that via game help.
09:14But in all versions of the game, here in the pause menu, every single level has a solution video that
09:19you can start watching.
09:20You can stop as soon as you want.
09:23Like, kind of get a hint or a flavor of what the first move is.
09:26And we show how to finish the stage, the bare requirements for finishing the stage.
09:31So we do not show clearing all Goldies or any Goldies at all, in fact, unless they are totally necessary
09:38to finish the stage.
09:41So next up, let's talk a little bit about the Others, which are a rival group you'll meet in the
09:46story mode.
09:47And they're similar to your humans, but they're different.
09:50The two groups differ in culture and language and have never spoken.
09:55But they do have one thing in common.
09:58They both desire Goldie.
09:59I love that Goldie.
10:01A friendly rivalry with the Others.
10:04And as you can see here, if they happen to grab Goldie, he turns Silver and starts walking with them
10:11instead.
10:11So you've got to stop that, right?
10:13No, can't have that.
10:14Yeah.
10:15So this stage, Winner Takes All, is actually one of my favorites in the game.
10:19And it's set up as an escalation of this rivalry with the Others.
10:24And it's a race against them in this sort of huge, expansive level.
10:29And one of the more advanced strategies that you learn here is that making the people jump is faster than
10:37having them just walk there and climb up that wall.
10:41Spoilers.
10:42Spoilers a little bit.
10:44And I used the Soul Surf move, too, to scale that wall really quick as well.
10:49We're not going to show solving this stage properly, right?
10:52We're going to just...
10:53No, we wouldn't do that.
10:54We wouldn't do that.
10:55This is one of those levels you said earlier that you might have to collect a Goldie to complete.
11:00This is one of those.
11:01But I'm not going to do that at all.
11:02Instead, I'm going to show you the ending of this level here where you're racing against the Others.
11:07And one of the cool little tricks here is that if you happen to path your Humans to the End,
11:14and they hit the button before the Others get to their button,
11:17they make the path for the Others disappear.
11:20So they're royally screwed over.
11:24And here is an example of a stage where it has now boiled over.
11:29So this is going to get into our kind of battle mechanics such as they are.
11:35So now we have this shoot command, which when people walk over it,
11:39gives them a ranged weapon, and it looks like a laser pistol.
11:45And this is one of those time-stop puzzle stages.
11:49So you are placing all your commands first before the people are moving.
11:54And then you hit the power button and activate it.
11:57So here, this is just to show off the strengths and weaknesses of the two different types of weapons that
12:05we have.
12:05We have these melee weapons.
12:06So, yeah, at range, you want to, you know, stay far away and be shooting people.
12:11And when you get in close, as hopefully is intuitive with the melee weapon,
12:17you're going to be much more, it's a much more powerful hit.
12:20And so here, our strategy didn't quite work out going straight at them
12:25because they, others there equipped with batons are going to overpower the formation that we had with our ranged weapons.
12:36However, that's a nice example of where we want to use that keep, retry, keep commands,
12:43and play with different configurations.
12:47We're not going to spoil how you do it in this stage,
12:49but, yeah, there's a lot of different ways to finish this stage.
12:53Let's talk a little bit more about the action side of the action puzzle game that is humanity.
12:59So we have these stages where you more directly control the people,
13:05sort of Piper style via the follow command.
13:09Exactly.
13:10And this stage right here is sort of like an old school auto-scrolling level
13:15where you start this up and then lead the people onto this moving platform.
13:20and you have this sort of minefield of all these blocks in front of you
13:25and you have to pass the people on this moving platform through this obstacle here.
13:32And what I'm doing here is sort of tightening up the group by circling around as the Sheba,
13:37they get into a really tight group here.
13:39This stage is teaching you grouping.
13:41and then also you might notice those number switches as well, right?
13:45So you need to have a certain number of people to activate those.
13:48So you can lose some people here or there,
13:51but if you lose too many, you either can't get some of the optional extras
13:55or maybe not even be able to clear the final part of the stage.
13:59Yeah.
13:59And this level mixes things up a little bit later with those moving blocks that try to knock you off.
14:05and if you're not timing things correctly, they can really be a problem.
14:10You've got to break a few eggs, right?
14:12That's right.
14:13To make humanity, is that what we're saying?
14:15To rescue humanity, absolutely.
14:16Yeah, yeah.
14:17But yeah, at times the game veers into more almost like a pure platformer.
14:24Okay, now some very late game stuff that we've only really showed in the trailers,
14:31not in the demo or anything.
14:32But these are examples of the machines, as we call them.
14:37So things have happened in the story.
14:40Things have progressed between you and the others.
14:42and now you have kind of a new antagonist in these kind of monolithic blocks
14:51that are attacking you with their lasers.
14:53There's some stealth mechanics here as you have to avoid their spotlights.
14:58You do eventually get some machines on your side that you can control and use against them
15:04and their armies of automatons.
15:07If you zoom in on these people, yeah, they're actually,
15:10these are not others or people.
15:13These are little interstellar, like, monolithic robot people.
15:18So, you know, using that follow command now,
15:21you have direct control over these machines
15:23and it almost becomes at times like a little mini arcade game.
15:28But there are other more, you know, pure puzzle levels
15:31and all different mixes of all the elements you've had up until now
15:36just with this added X factor of the machines.
15:39Again, really, like, late in the story mode of the game.
15:44All right, let's talk bosses.
15:47Bosses!
15:49Bosses in humanity, just like any video game.
15:53But since it's a puzzle game, they are a little bit different.
15:57The first couple are these sorts of tests of your knowledge
16:01and they lean hard into the puzzle aspects of it.
16:04You know, did you learn the mechanics and can you apply them
16:09in this sort of larger test?
16:11And then later on, we have this sort of more action-y,
16:16bullet hell style boss, like right here,
16:20where you are having the people follow you
16:23and you have to dodge lasers and boss movements more actively.
16:29So you have to figure out the pattern without losing all of your people
16:32because if you get down to zero people following you,
16:35you have to retry the stage.
16:38So enough about story mode, let's talk user stages.
16:41So this is our browser for all the user-generated content,
16:44all the stages made with our stage creator.
16:48So when you first enter into user stages here,
16:52we have our curated list.
16:54These are kind of highlight levels that we at Enhance
16:59on the community team think are worth checking out.
17:02This is going to be refreshed very often.
17:06Then we have our regular browser, our full browser.
17:10This is a more friendly, simple Netflix or YouTube-like interface
17:14where you can see really quickly who made it,
17:20how many plays, how many favorites, the rating,
17:22and then an auto-generated difficulty
17:24based on what percentage of people have cleared it.
17:28If you choose the level, then you can see a little more detail.
17:31You can see all the tags that are associated with that level
17:35that you can then use to search by if you want.
17:38Or you can see the clear rate.
17:41You can report it, favor it, et cetera.
17:45You can also do all that stuff after you finish playing the level.
17:49But going into some examples of user stages,
17:54just to give you...
17:55And this is not even scratching the surface.
17:58Even just in our one-week time-limited demo,
18:00we got a lot of killer stages.
18:04We were really, really happy with the response.
18:06So here's Super Shiba Inu Bros.
18:09and this is something where somebody said,
18:11I'm going to just really explore the game mechanics,
18:16the platforming mechanics.
18:17And this is looking easier than it is.
18:20But each one of these jumps is basically the limit
18:23of what you can do as a jump.
18:26And here you're floating through the water in a clear stage.
18:28It's hard to even see where you are.
18:31Yeah, this is much more focusing on the action platform
18:34part of humanity, which I think is an interesting angle, for sure.
18:41And then here we have Escape the Pyramid,
18:45which is one of my favorite levels out of the whole demo,
18:49where it's this layer cake of different puzzles.
18:52That first part is a more straightforward block pushing.
18:56It looks simple, but it's actually kind of a cool little mind-bending thing.
19:00And then you get down here to the next level,
19:02and it's this old-school arcade game, almost like Pac-Man.
19:07And then there's another one underneath that.
19:09And each one, when you finish that layer,
19:11it removes to the next layer.
19:12That level used mechanics and things
19:14that we didn't even realize we had in the game,
19:17which was really exciting to see.
19:19Yeah, and again, these are all created by users
19:22that we've surfaced and curated to the top
19:25with these playlists and featuring that we're doing.
19:28So whenever you come back to the User Stages browser,
19:32you are always going to find some quality content here.
19:35We're trying to surface the best, most challenging levels,
19:39so you'll get a lot of good and varied stuff.
19:41Stuff that's not only action-y, but also artistic as well,
19:46like this squirrel level that we're on right now
19:49that's part puzzle and part artwork here.
19:52I didn't even realize you could do this.
19:54I didn't even realize there was this.
19:56I solved that level a totally different way.
19:58I feel so silly now in how I finished it.
20:01But yeah, this is actually not just art.
20:04This is a really cool little puzzle here.
20:09And yeah, like you say, CJ,
20:10we're going to be working with the community
20:12and really curious the kinds of things
20:14that people want to have surfaced.
20:17We want to have things like theme weeks
20:20and like contests and all kinds of fun stuff.
20:26So yeah, definitely.
20:29Join our Discord.
20:30Join our Discord and regularly check into User Stages
20:33and see what's going on there as that evolves.
20:40And finally, we have our Stage Creator,
20:43which is the place, if you're feeling imaginative,
20:48to make your stage or make your own puzzles come to life.
20:52And it was a focus for the team
20:55to make this as easy as possible to use,
20:58make it really simple and intuitive.
20:59So when you first go into Stage Creator,
21:02you'll be walked through a tutorial
21:04complete with videos teaching you how to set up your stage.
21:08And it walks you through setting a human gate and a goal.
21:14And then it kind of lets you free to create.
21:17You can let your imagination run wild.
21:20And we have all of these palettes of commands
21:23and different tools that are used in the story mode
21:27that you can remix and use to your liking,
21:31however you want.
21:33The idea being as simple as possible.
21:36So like if you can, anybody can make a stage here.
21:39So in the tradition of like a little big planet,
21:44all of the commands are always listed all the time.
21:47The interface is super simple.
21:49Like CJ said, we have this interactive tutorial,
21:51but also all of these tutorial videos as well.
21:57from everything from basic commands to advanced techniques.
22:00But honestly, even just jumping in there
22:01and messing around with it,
22:03because all of the buttons are always labeled,
22:05it's very simple.
22:06We're really proud of how this turned out.
22:10And yeah, like CJ mentioned, it's very versatile.
22:13You could basically make almost any stage
22:16that we make in the game,
22:16minus the story cut scenes.
22:21Machines are not going to be in there at launch.
22:24We're actually holding those
22:25and going to have that launch a little later,
22:28but pretty much everything in the game,
22:30including timed hidden switches,
22:34things that move other things,
22:35linking things up,
22:37all the different backgrounds you can unlock.
22:40Yeah, a lot of cool stuff here.
22:44Yeah, and I'm not usually the type of person
22:46that creates levels when a game has a level editor,
22:49but I really love hopping into the humanity editor
22:53and playing around with the tools.
22:55Like it's, you usually hop in the sandbox
22:58and come up with something pretty cool.
23:00Hmm.
23:01One thing we didn't mention in the user stages browser,
23:06but affects that and this stage creator,
23:09you do have ratings as a player and as a creator.
23:12So to kind of further incentivize people
23:16to be playing and creating each other's levels.
23:20Yeah, every time you upload a level
23:22or every time you play or solve,
23:24I should say somebody else's level,
23:26especially if you solve with the goldies,
23:27you get a bonus.
23:28It's kind of like XP and you go up these levels
23:31and in those levels,
23:33you unlock items that you can use,
23:37items that were in the single player game,
23:39but you unlock them for use in the stage creator.
23:43So yeah, hopefully that's something people will get into.
23:46And during the demo period,
23:48there were some pretty tough levels that people created,
23:50but you do, after you create a stage,
23:53have to complete it yourself to prove that it can be done.
23:57So if you are playing levels out of the user stages browser,
24:01you know at least one person has been able to finish it.
24:04Must be possible.
24:05Yeah, that's always a fun thing that I know from other games,
24:08which is, oh, this level has X many, 5,000 plays
24:12and only, you know, 10 people have ever cleared it.
24:16I wonder what's going on here.
24:17So look forward to that.
24:19And yeah, I think that's mostly going to do it.
24:23Look forward to everything else, please.
