00:01There will be nearly 2,500 games played this season, but tonight there's only one.
00:07In sunny San Francisco, home to one of baseball's crown jewels, Oracle Park.
00:12And a matchup tonight that predates even the skyline behind it.
00:17Giants and Yankees, a century-old rivalry that's featured some of the most legendary names of the past.
00:23You're hearing right now, and the present.
00:26When this rivalry started, you guys, games were being broadcast on living room radios,
00:31and presently we are starting opening night on the biggest global streaming network in the world with a drone shot.
00:37Well, it's been almost five months since the final Out of the World Series was recorded in Toronto,
00:42and a new season of baseball is upon us.
00:45Tonight, live from Oracle Park in San Francisco, the curtain rises on the 2026 campaign.
00:52Tony Vitello has such a fascinating story.
00:54He is a trailblazer, undeniably so.
00:58The first-ever manager in Major League Baseball history to come directly from the college ranks
01:02without a day's worth of pro player, coach, or managerial experience.
01:07Well, he's got an ace out there that he's handed the ball to on opening day here tonight.
01:12Logan Webb, the two-time All-Star, who's coming off a terrific 2025 campaign,
01:18led Major League Baseball in innings of work and games started.
01:22This is his fifth opening day start.
01:24What a badge of honor.
01:25And Grisham's a strikeout victim to start the night.
01:29The right fielder, number 99, Aaron Judge.
01:38Giant fans showing their appreciation for Aaron Judge.
01:42Six-pitch at-bat to Trent Grisham.
01:44Six pitches to Aaron Judge.
01:45That's another attribute to this Yankee lineup.
01:48The next three, two.
01:49And that one got him.
01:51So two strikeouts for Webb, and that brings up the two-time All-Star, former National League MVP, Cody Bellinger.
01:57Long run for Elliot Ramos gets there in the high skies, they call it, to make for a one-two
02:03-three start to the season.
02:05Behind Logan Webb.
02:06Freed coming off a great first year as a Yankee.
02:09Yeah, going 19-and-5 with a 2-8 ERA, 195 innings.
02:14Max Freed, by the way, making his fourth career opening day assignment.
02:19So Chapman beats out the double play ball, and there's one away with a man at first.
02:24I'll bring up the DH tonight.
02:25Rafi Devers, the three-time All-Star who joined the Giants after a mid-season trade for Boston last year.
02:32Look hot.
02:33The Christian got a late break on, and it drops into no-man's land.
02:37And a sun-aided base hit off the bat of Rafi Devers.
02:42Has runners at first and third with only one out.
02:45Here's Willie Adamas now.
02:47Giants with a chance to get on the board first.
02:49Adamas coming off a 30-homer season as a giant last year.
02:53And his first strikeout of the game is a big one.
02:56Two gone now with runners still at the corners.
02:58Joe Uli, first ball picking, a ground ball for Chisholm that gets freed, and the Yankees out of any first
03:05-inning trouble.
03:05Now bring up the five-time All-Star Jean-Carlos Stanton.
03:09That's headed for the gap in right-center field.
03:13And Stanton, who ended spring training much better than he started it with elbow injuries that cost him some time.
03:20Yeah, who was talking about is, like, we just need to bottle him up.
03:23He might not be able to open a bag of chips, but he's ready to hit.
03:25Ready, man.
03:26And Jazz Chisholm wears one.
03:28Man, he had no chance to get out of the way of that point.
03:31First and second the hard way with nobody out.
03:33Last year's Major League stolen base leader, shortstop Jose Caballero.
03:38And there's a shot into left field.
03:40Ramos goes to get it.
03:42Stanton on his way around to score.
03:44Throw comes into second.
03:45It's wild.
03:47Great play by Arise just to keep that ball from getting into right field.
03:52In the meantime, the Yankees are on the board.
03:55First, it's 1-0 New York.
03:56First RBI of 2026.
03:59Belongs to Jose Caballero.
04:01That'll bring up the third baseman, Ryan McMahon.
04:03And the fire's still hot here.
04:05Second and third with only one away.
04:070-2 from Webb.
04:08Bouncer headed up the middle, and that's going to get through and drive in a couple of runs.
04:133-0 New York.
04:15One of those 20 hoppers.
04:17Good things happen if you put the ball in play right here.
04:19So, Webb, he gets ahead of him right there and honestly gets the swing that he wants.
04:23You want to get a ground ball.
04:24Rather be lucky than good.
04:25Find a hole.
04:26That is five straight Yankees to reach base safely.
04:30First and second with only one away.
04:32Yeah, everything just coming off the bat's hot.
04:34This is an offense that, you know, they were tops in the American League.
04:37It's not the most runs in Major League Baseball.
04:39They're showing it right here, right out of the gates.
04:42Run it back.
04:42So, first and second with three runs in and still only one away.
04:46First pitch to Trent Grisham.
04:48Cranked up and sent into the right center field gap.
04:52McMahon's going to score easily.
04:53They're going to wave Wills around.
04:55Plays to third.
04:57Thread hits another runner.
05:00Wow!
05:015-0 New York.
05:03And the Yankees are absolutely teeing off on an elite starting pitcher here.
05:09Logan Webb has not endured this kind of damage in any one inning since the 2023 season.
05:16Yankees putting their feet up on the furniture here on opening day.
05:19Jazz, I want to ask you about your starting pitcher here today.
05:22Tell us a little bit about getting to play behind him.
05:24What's it like?
05:25It was great not facing him anymore, you know.
05:34And now I get to sit behind him and watch him work and realize why he was always getting me
05:39out.
05:39Struck out four of his last six.
05:42We've had our first ABS challenge.
05:45ABS powered by T-Mobile.
05:47And a call that was a strike.
05:49Little sinker up and in.
05:51Has been confirmed.
05:53Bill Miller staying perfect.
05:54If you had on your bingo card, the first ABS challenge would come on a pitch that would be upheld.
06:02You're a winner.
06:03So the Yankees are left with one ABS challenge now.
06:07Caballero on the short half.
06:09Good play by Matt Chapman.
06:10A five-time goal.
06:11Glover made that look much easier than it was.
06:14Bottom of the order has been very productive for the Yankees against Webb today.
06:17Wells now two for two.
06:19Yankees are in business once again.
06:20Two on with one away for Trent Grisham.
06:23There's a little one, another one head for no man's land.
06:25And Harrison gave it right well.
06:27Former goal Glover comes up to make a very nice catch.
06:30So another opportunity for Aaron Judge.
06:32A couple of strikeouts for him so far tonight.
06:35Two men on with two away.
06:36Back to back changeups.
06:37And they get Webb out of trouble.
06:40Stranding two in the fourth.
06:42Another first pitch knock.
06:44They come back to back.
06:45So now four of the eight hits for New York have come on the first pitch of the at-bat.
06:51And there are runners at the corners on two pitches to open the fifth.
06:54Big career numbers against the Giants.
06:57For the guy they call Big G.
06:59Who has driven in a run with the third straight hit to open the fifth inning.
07:03And none of them cheap.
07:05These are all just blistered line drives.
07:08This one, 114.4.
07:10Pitch counts getting up there a little bit.
07:12Might want to start getting somebody up in the bullpen.
07:13Gave up four straight hits in the second.
07:16Three straight hits to open the fifth.
07:17If you could take the second inning away.
07:19Webb's been pretty good tonight.
07:21Chisholm bounces it to first.
07:23Schmidt to second for one.
07:25And the relay's not going to be in time.
07:26It gets away at first base.
07:28And that'll score a run.
07:30A giant misplay leads to a second run this inning.
07:34It's Keaton Wynn who is the first in out of the Giants bullpen on this opening day.
07:39Judge never went through a four-strikeout game last year.
07:43And rats you an MVP.
07:44And by the way, he has hit safely in all nine of his opening days as a Yankee.
07:50So that's on the line tonight.
07:56And they're putting the golden sombrero on their head.
07:59Giants fans, something to cheer about.
08:02Oh, and to the counts of Cody Bellinger.
08:04Back-to-back strikeouts of a couple of MVP bats.
08:07Matt Chapman, the first to face Max Fried.
08:10Two balls and a strike to Matt Chapman.
08:12Chopper for Jazz.
08:13Hot shot.
08:14And he makes the catch.
08:15Eckhart got on there on a line.
08:16And he's telling Jose Cowboy, did you see that?
08:19Never seen a guy get eight up on a line drive.
08:21Put a glove on that palm.
08:24Fried looked like he was going to be the shaky one in the first.
08:26But when he got into a groove, ended up going six and a third, scoreless.
08:30Yeah, he gets through that first inning, a walk and a knock.
08:32He strikes out Willie Adamas, gets Jung-Hoo Lee.
08:34And then it was pretty much dominant stuff from Max Fried.
08:38Really just an impressive stuff from an elite pitcher.
08:40That floating Giants hot tub is about as lonely as the hits column on the scoreboard tonight.
08:47There's two hits for San Francisco.
08:49Luis Rice into right with hit number three for San Francisco tonight.
08:54The Giants have stacked up multiple base runners for the first time since the first inning tonight.
09:00And here's Rafi Devers now.
09:02First and second with two gone.
09:05Went back to the slider and got a fly ball for Trent Grisham
09:08to keep the Giants scoreless through eight back at Oracle Park
09:13where the Yankees are three outs away from sealing up an opening day win on the road.
09:19And they'll turn to somebody very familiar to the Giants and their fans.
09:23Former Giant right-hander Camilo Duvall takes over here in the ninth.
09:28A little case of the yips there is Jose Caballero clanks one.
09:33And it's an error around the shortstop.
09:35Hey, base runners any way you can.
09:37So that'll bring up Jung-Hoo Lee who is 0 for 3 on opening night.
09:41The ninth to center.
09:43One gone in the ninth.
09:45One out, one on here in the last of the ninth for Elliott Ramos.
09:48That one gets away from Wells.
09:50Wild pitch that will advance.
09:52Adama is the second with one win on the ground and a chance for Caballero.
09:56And the Giants are down to their last out on opening day.
10:00And Ben Rice, take that man to dinner, scooping you another one.
10:03That's a big pick.
10:04Casey Schmidt with two gone and a runner at third and a 7-0 deficit.
10:08And on the first pitch, a high drive for Aaron Judge.
10:12That will put a close to business on opening night.
10:16A statement win for the New York Yankees.
10:19A 7-0 shutout on the road is how they opened their 2026 campaign.
10:25First opening day shutout win on the road for the New York Yankees since 1967.
10:32First opening day shutout win on the road for the New York Yankees since 1967.
