Theo James on the dangers of giving actors too much room to play in new movie 'Fuze'The Independent
Transcript
00:00What was the energy like on set?
00:02I mean, it was good.
00:04David likes authenticity, and even though it's kind of a genre exercise,
00:07it's a mashing of military meets a heist movie,
00:11you know, his touch points were 1970s Harboil,
00:14you know, Gene Hackman, French Connection, that kind of thing.
00:18So what he strives for is authenticity within the heightened nature of him,
00:23if you know what I mean.
00:23So he likes long takes and a lot of improvisation,
00:26which I love because I think that you have a bit of freedom.
00:30You don't want too much freedom with actors because they start,
00:31you know, talking absolute dog shit and you need to cut them.
00:35But, you know, for example, with the physical stuff he likes to do,
00:38let you do it.
00:39So, you know, we're breaking into the concrete wall of the diamond...
00:46I can't think of the word. What is it called?
00:49The diamond vault. There we go.
00:51And, you know, he wants you to do the work.
00:54You've got to be using the circular saws.
00:57You've got to be, you know, breaking down the concrete with a sledgehammer.
01:00And it's interesting because what it lends itself is a real sense of fatigue.
01:04There's real dirt on your face.
01:06It's not, you know, someone coming in and f***ing on in the last minute.
01:09And that was kind of fun in a way because there's an authenticity that lends itself to that.
01:14Yeah.
01:14Yeah.
01:14You
