00:00By the authority committed to me, install you Sarah.
00:05This is the moment that Archbishop Sarah Mullally was installed as the new Archbishop of the Church of England.
00:11It's a ceremony that has been in preparation since before Dame Sarah was announced as the new Archbishop back in
00:17October
00:17and welcomes bishops from around the world as well as UK politicians and the Duke and Duchess of Wales.
00:24In this building behind me, history is being made.
00:27Archbishop Sarah Mullally is the 106th Archbishop of the Church of England,
00:32but also the first ever female Archbishop in the Church's 1500 year long history.
00:38And earlier I spoke to Bishop Rose, who's the Bishop of Dover, but also the first ever black female Bishop
00:44in the Anglican Church.
00:45Somewhere along the line, a few men sharing with some women saying, oh, no, no, no, they're girls, they're women.
00:52No, no, no. And we are changing that. We're seeing that change.
00:55What I do want is for it to get to that place and time when we no longer say it's
01:02the first.
01:03And when we don't do that any longer, we will know that it's normal.
01:08As well as becoming the head of the Church of England,
01:11Archbishop Mullally is the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion.
01:14That's tens of millions of Anglicans around the world,
01:18with the majority of jurisdictions strictly allowing only men to be ordained as bishops.
01:23We've had women bishops in the Church of England since early 2015.
01:28So the first woman bishop was consecrated in, I think, January 2015.
01:32So it's only 11 years since bishops were first, women bishops were first consecrated.
01:39And so it's, it's, it's very significant that in that relatively short period of time,
01:45we have now got a female Archbishop of Canterbury.
01:49Speaking to the BBC ahead of the installation,
01:53Archbishop Sarah said that the ceremony would be about celebrating women
01:56and has already acknowledged the significance of being the first ever female Archbishop.
02:01Nods to the contribution of women were woven throughout the service on Wednesday,
02:05including music celebrating the contribution of female scholars, musicians and writers to the Church.
02:11In her first sermon, she also acknowledged the survivors caused by the Church's past safeguarding failures,
02:19one of which caused her predecessor to resign,
02:21and the Archbishop also vowed to tackle misogyny within the Church.
02:25While many are aware of the scrutiny that Archbishop Sarah may face,
02:29they all have faith that she will overcome them.
02:31And as the first ever in the Church's history,
02:34many within the Anglican Communion hope that the new Archbishop continues to trailblaze the way.
