00:19On Sunday, just after 2.30pm, Dane Sarah Mullally, who is the former Bishop of London, arrived
00:26in Canterbury after her six-day pilgrimage from the capital, and was received by the
00:32Mayor of Canterbury, the Bishop of Dover, and the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. Dame Sarah
00:39made history when she was named last year as the first woman to hold the office as the
00:45Archbishop of Canterbury in its 1,400-year history. Royals and faith leaders gathered on Wednesday
00:52for her official installation in a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral, historically known
00:59as an enthronement. While the King is technically head of the Church, Dane Sarah has become the
01:06most senior Bishop and the spiritual leader of the Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion.
01:14The ceremony took place on Wednesday without any specific safety mitigations amid the
01:21meningitis outbreak in Kent, but officials kept in contact with health authorities to
01:27monitor the situation. Dame Sarah, in a statement earlier this week, said her thoughts and prayers
01:32were with the families of two young people who have died in the outbreak, saying her heart
01:40goes out to them in their devastating loss.
01:42Pure joy to be here today and to be able to welcome Archbishop Sarah to the cathedral precincts
01:51as we prepare for her great service on Wednesday of this week. We welcome you at the start of
02:00Passion Tide. When we think of Jesus' last walk as he walked into his great city of Jerusalem
02:09Jerusalem and walked in with a donkey and with the people gathered to welcome him.
02:15The pilgrimage from London to Canterbury, from Bishop of London to Archbishop of Canterbury,
02:21has been an opportunity for me to walk with God but into God and with other people. And so I
02:27would
02:28like to thank you all for your support, whichever part you played in this walk with pilgrimage, to have
02:34accompanied me on the way, whether physically or in prayer. I am very grateful for that and look
02:41forward very much to you joining with me either in person or online or in prayer on Wednesday.
02:48It's been an opportunity to worship with a whole series of people, with children, with people in
02:54churches. And for me that's been a real inspiration and an opportunity to pray.
