00:00But first tonight, Dame Sarah Mullally was announced as the new Archbishop back in October of 2025.
00:06But today at Canterbury Cathedral, she's been officially installed as the head of the Church of England.
00:11With more details, our reporter Nayla Mohammed joins us now live from Canterbury Cathedral.
00:16She's been there all day. So, Nayla, what's the atmosphere been like in Canterbury today?
00:22It's been absolutely ecstatic here, Finn.
00:25We've had sun, we've had rain, we've even had a bit of snow.
00:28But it has not hindered people's excitement about the day.
00:32And you can see Canterbury Cathedral, you can't really see it because it's quite sunny.
00:36But Canterbury Cathedral is behind me, I promise.
00:38And history was made.
00:40Like you said, Archbishop Sarah Mullally was officially enthroned today.
00:45And this is really significant because she is the first ever female Archbishop to be enthroned as Archbishop
00:52in the Church's 1500-year history.
00:55And that's really, really significant.
00:56And earlier today, I spoke to Bishop Rose, who's the Bishop of Dover, who's also the first ever,
01:03she's the first ever black female bishop in the Anglican Church.
01:06And this is what she had to say.
01:08Oh, it is very, very important because, you know, when God made humanity, men and women, God said it was
01:18good.
01:18And then somewhere along the line, a few men sharing with some women saying, oh, no, no, no, they're girls,
01:26they're women.
01:26No, no, no.
01:27And we are changing that.
01:28We're seeing that change.
01:29What I do want is for it to get to that place and time when we no longer say it's
01:36the first.
01:36And when we don't do that any longer, we will know that it's normal.
01:42But we've got to blaze the trail now.
01:45And that's what the first female Archbishop of Canterbury is doing.
01:52I see. And talk to us a bit about the process of the enthronement.
01:57Well, I was actually inside the cathedral during the installation process, and it's not something that I've seen before.
02:02So initially, the Archbishop has to knock on the door three times because she can't assume that she has entrance
02:07into the cathedral.
02:08It still has to be formally accepted for her to do it.
02:11And so when she goes in, she's then asked, she was then asked by three kids, why are you here?
02:16And she then had to say, I'm here because I'm Archbishop and I am going to serve God, essentially.
02:23And then the doors close, and that's when the process starts.
02:25But what a lot of people don't realize, there are two thrones that she needs to be enthroned on, not
02:30just one.
02:31The second throne, the cathedral, which is where cathedral gets its name from.
02:34And after the ceremony, after some prayers, she then went around to the Batamarka,
02:40where she blessed the city of Canterbury through some speeches and some prayers in front of a massive crowd.
